RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me. However, what if they also used profanity? Is it worthy of a 911 call? No it is not. The caller was subsequently warned that it is misuse of 911 and they could be charged.

Did you know that it someone puts false posts on social media sites, or posting mean things on social media we can’t do anything - wait yes we can, as stated before, sticks and stones . . .

Calling one names is harassment, but it is not Criminal Harassment. That said, if they are yelling, swearing and screaming in public it is Causing a Disturbance and we can deal with that.

If you are the executor of a will it can be challenging and difficult. If there are firearms involved please liaise with the RCMP. We are presently assisting Brandon Police Service in an investigation where they seized a Restricted Firearm during a Criminal Investigation. The previous owner is now deceased and our Detachment is tasked with finding out where the remaining restricted firearms went.

We responded to several “Well being checks” We see more of these in the winter because “It is cold outside” Members dealt with several assault investigations. One where both spouses ended up being charged and child welfare was contacted. Alcohol was a factor for one of the accused.

On another occasion alcohol was a contributing factor for the alleged victim and drugs for the accused. The victim was able to jump out of a vehicle when it was stuck behind another vehicle stopped at a stop sign. The accused was charged with assault with a weapon, assault, mischief and forcible confinement. Thanks to the staff of Chimo Building Centre for keeping the victim safe until the arrival of the police.

Child Welfare, the RCMP and Regina Police are involved in an assault investigation which may involve child abuse, and Domestic Violence.

We had four prisoners for Court on Wednesday and by the end of the day we still had three, then we arrested two, released on and by Thursday we still had four. Three were escorted to Regina and one was released.

Members, Volunteer Fire Fighters, Sask Power, and Sask Energy responded to a False Fire alarm in

White Bear and Volunteer Fire Fighters and Police responded to another false alarm which was caused by a water line break in Arcola.

Can you believe we went a complete week without a Fraud complaint? You can......thus the reason frauds happen so much. We want to believe, it is in our nature to believe and trust others. Thus we did have a fraud complaint. It is under investigation.

We have a theft investigation of a furnace, which is not uncommon, especially from building sites.

Members responded to an altercation at a residence which resulted in two individuals being lodged, with one subsequently going to the hospital.

This incident did not result in charges.

We have stated many times don’t leave your keys in the vehicle. The ignition is a bad place, so is the visor, consol, under the seat, under the floor mat, the gas tank and glove box. Now if you continue to leave your keys in the vehicle do not be surprised when it is stolen. Now if you leave your keys in the vehicle and a friend takes it and does not bring it back and you don’t want charges.......why are you calling the Police?

Looking at pornography is in many people’s eyes bad, but it is not generally illegal. That said if you are embarrassed that you looked at pornography and someone caught you, do the Police really need to be involved? The answer for some is “Yes” We conducted a quick investigation and there is nothing illegal, but in some peoples eyes it was “Bad”.

An individual chose to get angry yell and scream at a building and the occupants called the Police. It took our arrival to resolve the matter and fortunately for the angry individual nobody wanted charges.

Members located an impaired driver and they were subsequently charged after providing samples of 190 mg%. This individual was well over double the legal limit of 80 mg%.

A couple of intoxicated individuals were trying to take someone’s vehicle. We are not certain if the owner was more concerned that they were intoxicated or that they were taking the vehicle. Regardless with the arrival of the Police we prevented anyone from driving impaired. Those that were looking for a ride were provided with one by “Buffalo Cab” which is another nickname for getting a ride in a Police Vehicle.

An individual was pulled over for an obstructed licence plate and liquor was found in the vehicle. The Member wrote the ticket for the obstructed licence plate ($150) and a warning for the liquor. Such a

nice police officer being the liquor ticket would have been $360.

SaskPower is assisting us with a theft of power investigation. If you have your power disconnected and you reconnect it you are committing a crime.

Why should all the other customers pay for you to get power?

We had a collision in the fog and fortunately no injuries, however, a tow truck was called. Another accident resulted in no injuries, however, the vehicle appears to be a write off. We had a further collision where one individual did not remain to provide information. It looks like charges will now be forthcoming.

Many individuals have asked me about our quota’s. Well my regular answer is, “I use to have a quota but now I can write as many tickets as I want.”

The truth is we do monitor Members contacts but there are no quota’s.

Fog lights are for the fog, they are not to be used “all the time”. This is becoming an issue which we are going to have to start enforcing. If there are “white” lights above your headlights they can not be used on a highway or roadway. If they are under your headlights you must realize they often act as high beams and you need to dim them when meeting on coming vehicles or when you approach another vehicle in your lane.

There are way too many vehicles driving around with cracks across their windshields. We dealt with approximately 15 in the last week. If you choose not to fix it we will make you fix it.

Tickets were issued for driving while suspended (Mandatory Court), fail to display a registration permit on the rear window of vehicle $100, fail to stop $230, inadequate windshield $115, illegal parking $100, window tint $115, fail to wear seatbelt $175, child not properly secured $175, cell phone use $280, and Speeding with the most expensive being $530 and $707.

Warning notices were issue for fail to stop, excessive damage to windshield, obstructed licence plate, speeding, fail to produce registration, fail to produce drivers licence, window tint, cell phone use, tail light fail to emit red light, inadequate headlamps, child not properly restrained, fail to wear seatbelt and insecure load.

Inspection notices were issued for excessive damage to windshield, inadequate headlamps, inadequate day time running lights, inadequate exhaust or muffler, inadequate brake lights, no signal light and remove window tint.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Christine Kendall on the death of her grandmother Verla Stevenson, late of Carnduff, she had passed away Jan. 12 at the age of 85. A service to celebrate Verla’s life was held January 16 in Carnduff. Condolences to all members of her family, especially to her daughter Marilyn Clow who had taught school here in Alida in the 1970-1982.

WOW – What a weekend at the Alida Rink when the Alida Rec. Board hosted the Alida Winter Games! It all started Thursday, January 17 at 5:00 pm. when the Alida Youth Rec Hockey team (coached by Jason Junk) played against the Carnduff Youth Rec Hockey team. This was a very interesting and close game fought by the two teams resulting in Alida Youth winning out. Following this game there were two adult wreck games scheduled for the evening, one at 7:00 and the last at 9:00. There were six adult teams entered in the tournament including teams from Storthoaks, Oxbow, Bellegarde, Redvers, Sinclair and of course the Alida Wrecks. On Friday evening there were two other teams scheduled to play. Also on Friday there was a Kids Fun Night of Curling, where the they tried out their skill at curling, throwing rocks, sweeping etc. they thoroughly enjoying themselves on the ice. Jan. 19 saw six adult games scheduled to be play including the finals being held in the evening. The first final was the C-event with Storthoaks vs Sinclair, they began their friendly battle at 5:00 – Storthoaks defeated Sinclair in another close game. The next game was the B-event final where Alida vs Bellegarde. This too was an up and down game for both teams resulting in Bellegarde finally coming out on top by one goal.

The A-event had Oxbow taking on Redvers – which again was another close game ending with Oxbow defeating Redvers by one goal and therefore winning the Silver Cup. Congratulations Team Oxbow.

All in all, the Tournament was a success. Throughout the day on Saturday there were prizes set up on display where one could purchase tickets and

choose their favourite and place a ticket in the paper bag representing that chosen prize. There were also five larger prizes set up for a Silent auction. Towards early evening the winners were posted and one could check over the prizes and pick up theirs, if they were lucky to be drawn. Once again this was a very successful event with many happy winners taking home a prize – Congratulations to all the winners. Beginning at 5o’clock a very delicious supper of assorted Lasagnas (beef and turkey) as well as a turkey/rice casserole, salads and assorted desserts was served to over 100 guests. Once again - this fun-raising event was a huge success for the Alida Rec. Board. They very much appreciate the great support that was given towards this event to everyone – the hockey players, referees, prize donations, volunteer workers and of course to all the participants – without you all the event couldn’t succeed.

Sympathy to the family of the late Nadine Lorette Jean Graham. She was the older daughter of the late Leonard and Chris Graham and a sister to Harold Graham and Saundra Corkish. She passed away peacefully on Jan. 16 at the Union Hospital in Weyburn. She was 81 years old. Burial will take place at the Wawota Cemetery at a later date.

(January 20) had Kitchen group #3 serving up 29 breakfasts. The Breakfast Challenge total remains at 54. A great job done guys and gals despite the low attendance, which was probably due to the weather as it wasn’t very nice – the wind was C.O.L.D. Next week it is Kitchen group #4 at the helm – see you at the rink.

The Wawota Curling Rink was a busy place from Jan. 11-14 when they held their Open Bonspiel. Twelve rinks participated. The winner of the A side was the Ed Fahlman team, the B side winner was the Duane Lamontagne

team and the C side winner was the Miskimin team. It is good to see the renewed interest in curling.

Our family received sad news from Kelowna this past week. Keith’s older sister, Joan Forbes passed away on Jan. 17.

She was 82 years old and was the oldest child of Cliff and Irma Olson and a sister to Carl (deceased), Freda Cooper (deceased), Conard and Keith. A celebration of her life will be held on Feb. 2 at Kelowna.

by Anita Shreve. It takes place at the turn of the century with a prominent Boston family summering on the New Hampshire coast. A spirited 15-year-old, Olympia falls in love with a 41 year old married doctor who has 4 children. It sounds disastrous, but the story is developed with a lot of sensitivity. I really enjoyed this book.

New foundation launched to support cancer care In Saskatchewan A new era of providing support for cancer care has begun with the launch of the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan (Foundation).

The new organization is the independent, fundraising partner of the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (Agency).

The Agency has accepted donations and issued tax receipts but there has never been a foundation dedicated to raising money on their behalf, until today. The rest of western Canada has had foundations specific to their cancer agencies for 20, 30 and 50 years.

Increased robotic farming

By Calvin Daniels It was only a few issues back I wrote about the anticipated emergence of increased robotic farming.

And then thanks to one of my social media connections I came across www.ecorobotix.com If you are not familiar with the company as a farmer you will likely become aware of it, or at least its technology soon enough.

The company is developing a 100 per cent autonomous robot which will apply herbicide for infield weed control.

There are several aspects of the machine that they are working on which make it both innovative, and very intriguing from the perspective of farmers.

To begin with the field unit would be solar powered.

To be able to take the operating cost of fuel out of the equation has to interest producers, and in a world headed toward a carbon tax the prospect of alternative energy sources makes sense.

Of course on a broader scale the move to a solar powered unit follows a growing worldwide trend to evolve away from the use of non-renewable energy sources. That may not be good news for a high-cost oil producer such as Alberta, but the world is making huge steps toward alternate energy.

The autonomous robot here is shown in a video crossing the field on legs not so unlike a mechanical spider. The interest here of course is reduced footprint and plant disturbance when applying herbicides.

Worst of times give birth to the best of times “Getting to heaven is not about Sundays, it’s about Mondays. What we do on Mondays.” Edwin Rolheiser I have faced approximately 1400 Monday morning back to work blues in my working career as a teacher. After twenty years of retirement I am almost over that Sunday night feeling that Monday is coming. “Find a job you like, and you will add five days to every week.” H. Jackson Browne Sundays are God’s gift to us. We need to rest and pray and prepare and repair our lives so that the work week can be approached with inspiration and enthusiasm. That is sage advice and comes to us in January which sports the worst Monday blues, culminating with blue Monday in the last week of January.

The dying breath of the last Monday of 2018 brought joy and inspiration to this writer. New Year’s Eve saw our family celebrating in the usual prayer and reminiscing as we gathered our strength for 2019 without my oldest brother whom I quoted above.

Many happy and painful memories were expressed as each family member in turn shared thoughts and news about the past year. Sometimes the way to bring the best of times from the worst of times is to experience tropically, in a figurative way.

In “Worst of Times is the Birth of the Best of Times” Father Brendan McGuire talks about our struggles in the darkest moments of our lives.

That is when we believe in something deeper than ourselves, namely God. From that dark-

ness hope is born.

McGuire shares the story of a 90-year-old parishioner, a wonderful woman of faith, who dies after a long illness with cancer. After 70 years of marriage and a wonderful life Rosa was ready to go. But she was waiting for her great, great granddaughter to be born. Little Holly got to spend two weeks with Anna before Anna died.

“When we gathered around that night, it was a beautiful celebration…

[Anna] smiled and knew she was ready to go to the Lord. In the darkest of times, she knew that the light of God was coming for her. Through the birth of her great, great granddaughter, she could see that light return to the family. ‘In the darkest of times is the birth of the greatest of times.’”

And so our family gathered on that last Monday of 2018 and steeled our courage and strength in the memories of God’s blessings over the life-times of family members who had gone before us.

And then most intriguing is that the robot uses sensors to identify weed plants and then apply the herbicide directly to that weed, and only to the identified weed. The impact here is twofold, starting with reduced application of product, which is not only a major cost-reducer, but is environmentally sound.

While such cutting edge technology will come with a large upfront cost, at least initially, the prospect of no operator to pay, the safety element of not having someone on-board a bonus, coupled with fuel and herbicide savings, the machine, or at least one with similar attributes has to have farmers very interested.

In the case of crop protection products, and nutrient applications as well, the opportunity of highly targeted application opens up huge opportunities as the cost is reduced from that of broadly applying across an entire field.

However, what may be most interesting with this is to wonder what is next?

This unit is being shown online in a video, go check it out, but that only happens when a company has achieved a certain level of developmental success. What is being worked on behind closed doors that still have a few kinks to work out, but are close to a public debut? The potential is exhilarating to imagine.

ects are great news for Saskatchewan’s resource industries.

The start of another new year brings growing opposition to federal government policies that are hurting our resource sector in Saskatchewan. In fact, hundreds of people recently braved bitterly cold conditions to participate in a Rally for Resources at the Legislative Building in Regina. Those in attendance voiced their support for greater market access for Western Canadian oil.

Addressing the root cause of the current energy crisis won’t happen until market access is enhanced and investor confidence is restored. Your Saskatchewan Party government is standing up for Saskatchewan by fighting the imposition of a carbon tax, Bills C-69 and C-48, and calling on the federal government to build pipelines so our energy sector can regain certainty and receive fair value for Canadian resources.

Without new pipeline capacity, demand for rail transportation will continue increasing to record levels, which will increase transportation costs for Western Canadian oil producers as well as all other rail-dependent industries, such as mining and agriculture.

Unless pipeline access to Canadian tidewater

ports can be secured, producers will be forced to continue to sell into a glutted United States market that routinely prices Canadian oil at a significant discount to the world price.

A lack of market access leads to price discounts that are estimated to cost Saskatchewan’s oil producers billions of dollars in revenues per year, and cost the Government of Saskatchewan hundreds of millions in lost royalties.

This has to change.

While the federal government has promised to force a carbon tax on Saskatchewan in 2019, our government will be fighting back in the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. Our constitutional court challenge of the federal carbon tax will be heard next month.

Saskatchewan is starting the new year from a position of strength with a growing population, a growing number of jobs, and a 3-year plan that remains on track to balance the budget. In 2019, we will continue to stand up for our province’s economy and resource sector in order to maintain and build on the quality of life Saskatchewan people expect and deserve.

Scams and frauds targeting Saskatchewan residents The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) want to warn residents about common frauds and scams that are occurring in Saskatchewan.

“We are partnering with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre because we have common concerns about frauds happening in the province,” Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority Director of Securities Dean Murrison said.

The most prominent frauds and scams in Saskatchewan by complaint are: · Phishing – Any email falsely claiming to be an established legitimate organization such as a financial institution, business or government agency in an attempt to have the consumer give private and personal information. · Service scam – Any false, deceptive or misleading promotion of or solicitation for services. These solicitations involve third parties that commonly make offers for telecommunications, and internet finance services. · Prize scam – Any false, deceptive or misleading solicitation advising victims they have won or have a chance to win something, but are required to purchase something first or pay an advance fee, such as taxes, to receive the prize. · Sale of fraudulent securities – Sale of investments that do not exist. · Recovery scam – A victim who lost money in a previous scam, is approached by someone claiming to work for a government agency, private company or consumer organization and told that they can help recover the lost money for a fee. · Extortion – Any person who unlawfully obtains money, property or services from a person, entity or

institution, through coercion.

How to protect yourself: · Be very cautious when speaking to people on the phone you do not know. · If someone emails, texts or calls asking for personal or banking information, do not provide the information. · Never wire money to a stranger. · Never make a cheque payable to a financial advisor personally or to a financial advisor’s personal company, it should only be payable to the registered dealer or issuer of the securities. · If someone contacts you about an investment opportunity, contact a professional adviser. · If you are investing money, check and make sure the person you are sending money to is a registered professional (http://aretheyregistered.ca/) with the Canadian Securities Administrators.

Two companies fined for the same incident that resulted in a workplace injury Two out-of-province companies were fined for Occupational Health and Safety violations after pleading guilty in Weyburn Provincial Court on January 15, 2019.

Western Energy Services Corp., operating as Horizon Drilling, o f Calgary, pleaded guilty to contravening subsection 17(1)(a) of the regulations (being an employer, fail to ensure that all work at a place of employment is sufficiently and competently supervised, resulting in a serious injury to a worker).

The company was fined $71,429 plus a surcharge of $28,571, a total of $100,000.

Great Western Tong Services (1987) Ltd. of Virden, Manitoba, pleaded guilty to contraven-

ing subsection 137(1)(a) of the regulations (being an employer fail to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine, resulting in a serious injury to a worker). The company was fined $25,000 plus a $10,000 surcharge.

Both companies were fined following a workplace incident on March 19, 2017. A worker was hospitalized after the worker’s forearm became entangled in the moving gear of a power tong.

Companies operating in the province are required to be in compliance with Saskatchewan employment laws, including Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

Record $12 million for crop research invested Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit announced more than $12 million in funding for 44 crop-related research projects through Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) and the Strategic Research Initiative (SRI).

The ADF and SRI programs are supported through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year, $388 million investment in strategic initiatives for Saskatchewan agriculture by the federal and provincial governments.

“Our government is investing in programs that support the innovative and sustainable growth of the Canadian agricultural sector,” said MacAulay.

“This funding in crop research will provide Canadian farmers, producers, and agribusinesses with the knowledge and technologies they need to compete globally and boost their bottom lines.”

“By investing in crop-related research, we’re investing in the future of Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry,” Marit said. “The projects we’re investing in today consist of a variety of fields of study, including herbicide resistance, pest control, crop breeding and much more. Not only do these projects enhance our industry by creating more opportunities for producers and agribusinesses, they cement our province as a leader in agriculture research.”

ADF support is awarded on a competitive basis to researchers looking to examine areas of importance to Saskatchewan producers. A few of the project topics include: developing a weed control system for herbicide resistant wild oat in wheat, enhancing the extraction of vitamins from canola crush co-product, establishing resistance to fusarium head blight in wheat, improving protein and seed quality in peas and determining the ideal seeding date for quinoa.

The SRI is a new program starting this year with the goal of providing targeted funding to advance strategic priorities within the industry. Projects are expected to go beyond the scope and scale of work

normally undertaken in ADF, pursuing innovative research that will address complex challenges facing the industry.

This year funding has been awarded to a project that will increase the quantity and quality of protein in the smooth yellow pea while advancing crop breeding technologies. In addition to funding provided by the federal and provincial governments, projects supported through the ADF are also receiving $3.6 million in funding from the following partners: The Western Grains Research Foundation, the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission, the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission, the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission, the Prairie Oat Growers Association, the Alberta Wheat Commission and the Manitoba Wheat and Barley Growers Association.

“ADF provides a great forum for producer groups to collaborate and co-fund agricultural research that improves agricultural systems, varietal development and agronomic practices,” Western Grains Research Foundation Board Chair Terry Young said. “Producers are committed to investing in agricultural research, and partnerships like this one with ADF helps leverage the investment we as producers are making in research.”

Opposing government policy is everyones right based on their own beliefs, values and, quite often, needs.

It can be legitimately argued that Trudeau federal Liberal government policy like carbon pricing does not match the need of Western or rural Canadians where oil production and agriculture would be hardest hit.

And people in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have the right to go challenge Trudeau and his government on this or any policy they see fit.

There may even be reason to oppose Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his personal style.

Style should always be less of an issue, but there can be little doubt that Trudeau has made his personal style a political selling point.

If photo ops and selfies are what attract some voters to Trudeau, it seems only reasonable that others should be allowed to dislike him because of his presentation.

Being bothered by the ahs and ums we heard from Trudeau at his recent town hall in Regina may seem petty criticism. But long-winded and disjoined responses that really dont answer a question can be a legitimate frustration.

Credit Trudeau for holding such open public forums that exposed him to unfettered criticism from anyone who shows up. This is something that neither former prime minister Stephen Harper dared do nor is something that Trudeaus current competition is doing.

But that shouldnt necessarily spare Trudeau from criticism if voters find his answers unsatisfactory or even if they simply dont like the way those answers were presented.

However, what should be unacceptable is personal, petty nastiest aimed at anyone, whether it be Trudeau or Opposition Conservative leader Andrew Scheer or any public officer holder simply trying to offer something he or she believes would be to the betterment of us all.

The level of nastiness aimed at Trudeau is something none of us should tolerate.

This is not to say that Stephen Harper wasnt subjected to similar out-of-bounds treatment. Nor is it suggest that Scheer and others dont face their fair share of abuse.

But it is say that in todays social media environment and political climate, there are those who dont bother with civility and think they can get away with whatever into their head.

The problem isnt just simple manners or productive debate. It is becoming an issue of downright racism that needs to be addressed.

These thoughts cross ones mind because of Trudeaus recent town hall where he faced not only a few nasty accusations and unfounded Internet conspiracies but some downright racism that deserved the strong condemnation possible.

One man stated at the town hall suggesting Muslims and Christians cant mix. It should be condemned by all people and all politicians.

Trudeau should have responded with something other than a polite answer about free speech.

Free speech was being allowed to ask Trudeau tough questions on pipelines, the carbon tax and on why he seems to think male-dominated construction camps are threats in rural settings. That happened at the town hall and people can judge Trudeaus answers for themselves.

But free speech isnt spewing the racist and nonsensical conspiracies we sometimes heard at the Regina town hall.

And, frankly, others like Conservative Opposition leader Andrew Scheer need to speak out against. His voice on this issue would be even more effective than Trudeaus voice.

NO prime minister, no politician, should be subjected to images of themselves being hanged. We have seen these on social media platforms associated with the yellow vest movement, which is maybe why this movement is quickly losing credibility.

One can be tough on politicians. One can be critical.

But there are still lines that should not be crossed.

Toxic misinformation taking us in the wrong direction There’s no red carpet or designer gowns involved but there is an award handed out annually that garners interest, as well as considerable debate. The award seeks to identify the Word of the Year. For 2018 the winner is… well, that depends on the source.

Based on print media and on-line searches one dictionary chose the My Outlook word ‘toxic’, while another gave Shelley Luedtke the title to ‘misinformation’. The word ‘toxic’ has been in English use since the 17th century although its roots in Greek and Latin go back much further. In 2018, in combination with words such as chemical, environment, culture, waste, and relationship the word saw a 45% increase in use.

Another agency chose ‘misinformation’ as their word saying it posed new challenges for navigating life in 2018. Its first recorded use was in 1580, and should not be confused with ‘disinformation’ which is an intentional effort to mislead. Misinformation is false information regardless of whether there is intent to deceive. The past year has indeed been interesting to navigate, particularly when studies indicate 60% of people admitted to believing and sharing stories on-line that were proven false.

In addition to awarding a Word of the Year there are also words eliminated from dictionaries when it is perceived they have gone out of use. Some, like brabble, hodad or nephoscope may not have too big an impact, but others have raised the eyebrows, and the ire, of parents, authors and educators. Back in 2007 a junior dictionary substituted ‘A is for acorn, B is for bluebell and C is for crocus’ with ‘A is for analogue, B for block graph and C for celebrity.’ The editors say children’s environments have changed and words from the natural world aren’t as relevant.

Those protesting the changes insist that dictionaries should exist to extend knowledge and expand vocabulary. It seems odd that as massive efforts, laws and taxes are levelled against adults as efforts to protect the environment, the world of literacy is working in seeming opposition to bolster children’s apprecia-

tion of said environment. To understand something you first need to be exposed to it. If our children aren’t outside playing and experiencing nature (the justification for removing those words) shouldn’t we be re-doubling our efforts to ensure they get some exposure?

We’re changing the way we speak. Some of it is inevitable. Social change and technological developments are two big factors but honestly, some of it is simple laziness as we look for shorter and quicker methods to communicate. Nonetheless language is not static. It is in a constant state of transition. So if we have to sit back and watch as some words go out of use, I would like to suggest a few.

Like the phrase ‘ordinary Canadians.’ It is a favorite of our politicians. As we ramp up into an election cycle I guarantee this phrase will be used a lot and we will be told by many on the campaign trail what we…ordinary Canadians…want. I have no problem with things being ordinary but the constant use of this term as applied to people should end. Do they really see us as ordinary? No special or distinctive feature? Uninteresting? Commonplace? That’s what ordinary implies. How about instead appealing to voters as informed, engaged, interested, and interesting, people. And please stop telling me what I want. Instead…listen…when I try to tell you.

Another word I wish we could eliminate: hater. Instead of being used to describe someone who greatly dislikes something, it has become a way to dismiss anyone who disagrees with us. Thanks to some of our musicians we can sing about it and simply reject anyone who questions what we say or do.

But these are just blips on the radar. There are far more important words I wish we could banish.

Hunger. Terrorism. Homelessness. Orphan. Imagine these words being removed from dictionaries because they were obsolete. There are many organizations, individuals and agencies at work tackling these issues. We could bolster their ranks.

Consider what would happen if we all spoke and worked in a way that turned the tide and put us on a new path. We could be part of an effort to crown a rather remarkable choice as the word of the year for 2019: hope. That’s my outlook.

As parents, we should not only give our kids the gift of our knowledge and the gift of “stuff”, we should also give them the gift of memories and encourage them to appreciate that life needs to be lived!

As Bob Dylan, a recent recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature and a pop

icon through many years has written: Take care of all your memories. For you cannot relive them. Now, it’s entirely possible your kids will have no idea who Bob Dylan is, but nevertheless, his words ring true for any generation.

So teach your kids well, support and nurture them, give them “stuff” that brings them (and you) joy – but be sure to teach them to live, too. Memories can be more important than money – but it certainly helps to have the financial resources that allow your kids to enjoy those memories unencumbered by financial stress and strain.

low Grass. If you’re unable to make the trip, you can listen to the game on CJ1150.

Yellow Grass started the game by scoring just 47 secsond into the match. They followed up with 3 more goals to end the period with a score of 4-0.

The third was dominated by the Wheat Kings as they put 5 more goals up on the board.

Both teams had scoring opportunities and powerplays, but unfortunately the Cougars couldn’t capitalize on them. Final score was 10-1.

SWIFT CURRENT: In less than eight months (August 9-18), nearly 1,200 of Western Canada’s athletes and coaches will set their sights on Swift Current and surrounding communities as we host the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG).

Thousands of visitors including officials, VIP’s, media and spectators will join us for the 10-day event. Featuring 16 sports and a major arts and cultural festival, the 2019 Games will be the largest event in Swift Current’s history.

In order to host an event of this magnitude, 2,000 enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers are required to “Get in the Game” and assist with the planning and execution of the 2019 WCSG. “From ticket takers to scorekeepers to stage hands—there are jobs for almost anyone and everyone!” exclaimed director of volunteers, Sheena Gatzke, “The investment of your time and talent will be worth it.”

The official launch of the volunteer recruitment period of the WCSG took place at the Credit

Union iPlex on January 21. The event showcased the “2,000 Metre Race” campaign to recruit volunteers, an overview of the work that has been done to date and recognition and celebration of current volunteers.

“Over the past year, many hours have been put into Games planning and preparation by volunteers and the Games office staff,” said Gatzke. “Now we need to step it way up—the actual Games, including sport, transportation, food services, culture, IT, athlete’s village, facilities, marketing and promotion, volunteer services, n eed assistance. We are going to have an influx of about 12,000 people into our city and surrounding communities and we want to make sure we put our best foot forward. So, please, Get In the Game!”

Brady going after sixth Super Bowl crown

Three weeks before the Feb. 3 Super Bowl in Atlanta, a compelling quarterback matchup for the big game was virtually guaranteed.

The four survivors leading into the AFC and NFC championship games were led by quarterbacks easily compartmentalized: In one group were the old guys, Tom Brady of New England and Drew Brees of New Orleans, who are without dispute among the greatest QBs of all time. The other group were the young bucks, superstar-to-be and this year’s most likely MVP Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City, and Jared Goff of Los Angeles Rams, who has thrown 60 TD passes in the last two seasons.

So what would the Super Bowl matchup be? The

two old goats against each other? The two kids firing end zone passes all day in Atlanta? One of the old guys against an upstart?

Championship Sunday on Jan. 20 provided great theatre and when it was all over, football fans will get to see a classic on Feb. 3: Tom Brady, the greatest of all time, vs. one of the young bucks, Goff.

Both conference championship games went to overtime, both were beset by controversial officiating calls and both games were won by the visiting teams.

For Brady, who at 41 is defying common wisdom that football is a young man’s game, will be playing in his third consecutive Super Bowl and fourth in the last five years. Overall, this year’s game will be Brady’s record-setting ninth appearance in a Super Bowl. He owns a 5-3 record and don’t bet against him boosting that to 6-3 come Feb. 3.

Goff, meanwhile, was the NFL’s No. 1 draft pick in 2016 but suffered

a terrible rookie season for the 4-12 Rams, going 0-7 in the seven starts he was given. But coach Jeff Fisher was fired, 30-year-old offensive guru Sean McVay was brought in as coach and it was if the new coach sprinkled all-star dust all over his young quarterback. In season 2, 2017, the rejuvenated Goff threw 28 touchdown passes, led the Rams to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth.

The natural progression continued in 2018 (13-3) and now the Rams are one win away from pro football’s pinnacle.

Brady, however, stands in the way and even though Brady and coach Bill Belichick suffered a 41-34 loss to Philadelphia in last year’s Super Bowl, it’s not likely to happen again.

The old geezer, Brady, will show the young pup, Goff, that when you’re the greatest of all time, Super Bowl victories are what’s expected of you.

AN ASTRONOMY ARTICLE BY JAMES EDGAR The Moon begins February as a thin sliver, waxing toward new phase. On the 2nd, Saturn and Pluto both are occulted – the ringed planet at 7 a.m. (the first in a monthly occurrence until November) and Pluto at 10 p.m. (UT for both). Unfortunately for North American viewers, neither event presents good prospects. Saturn should be easy to spot close by the thin Moon, but Pluto is tough to locate at the best of times – only by comparing its movement over a period of nights is it possible to differentiate from background stars. On the 6th, Vesta is occulted for parts of western Russia, otherwise a very close conjunction for the rest of the world. Then in succession, Neptune on the 7th, Mars and Uranus on the 10th, Aldebaran on the 13th, the Beehive Cluster on the 17th, all have a close brush with the Moon.

Full phase is on the 19th. On the 27th, Jupiter is 2 degrees south of the Moon.

Mercury emerges from behind the Sun around the 11th, and gradually diminishes in brightness as it approaches Earth and its phase angle decreases.

Reaches greatest eastern elongation 18 degrees from

the Sun on the 27th. The best western-evening apparition of the year for Northern Hemisphere observers.

Venus is visible low in the southeastern morning sky before sunrise. Now in the gibbous phase until late June, with the Southern Hemisphere favoured for the most part. Watch for a close brush with Saturn on the 18th.

Mars, the Red Planet, remains high in the early evening sky for Northern Hemisphere observers, passing from Aries into Taurus in mid-month. It passes 1 degree north of Uranus on the 13th.

Jupiter is in the morning sky in Ophiuchus where it will spend most of 2019. The waning crescent Moon passes 2 degrees to its north on the 27th.

Saturn continues to emerge in the eastern dawn sky, the brightest object among the stars of central Sagittarius, where it will spend all of 2019. The Ringed Planet has a close pass by the waning crescent Moon on the 2nd. Passes 1 degree south of Venus on the 18th.

Lunch was smoked barbecued pork loin on a bun & it was available to all who attended.

A mistake was made at Antler Nite with the Horn Measuring this year. We accept measurements that have been calculated by other

organizations and generally it is not a problem.

In this case, a measurement was accepted but it was not on paper, it was off an Iphone and was unclear. The problem was it was read as a Typical Whitetail when it was actually a Mule Deer. The results were as follows: Best Mule Deer, 197 5/8, sponsored by Antler Gun Club was won by Brody Henrion & Best Typical, (Fred Wiszniak Memorial), 155, sponsored by Joanne Wiszniak was won by Bobby Wanless.

Our apologies for this mistake and from this point forward, we will only be accepting the

papered measurements or we will remeasure the head.

I forget. God doesn’t

By Linda Wegner During the children’s segment of one morning service, our pastor spoke to the children about the meaning and significance of the rite of Communion. He introduced the subject by saying that on three separate Sundays he would address the subjects of Remembrance, Communion and… oops, I forgot the third topic.

After his introduction he asked the children, “Do you know what the word ‘remembrance’ means?’ No response. Next, “Do you know what it means to remember?” A number of them offered an explanation; yes, there definitely was a basic understanding of the

word amongst the children. He congratulated them and moved on from there to his next question.

“How many of you know what it means to forget?” Joining the excited response from the kids, came an almost unanimous lifting of hands from, I believe nearly every senior, if not every adult, in the congregation.

While their laughter was contagious, I’m not sure if the kids got it. This I do know, though, someday they will.

As far as I’ve experienced, forgetting is part of getting old. Names of persons as well as places where I’ve seen him, her or them sometimes eludes me; I do find it a source of comfort,

though, to run across the number of people who don’t remember my name either! In an effort to thwart some of my absentmindedness, I’ve been doing lots of crossword puzzles and writing things down.

Thankfully both strategies seem to help.

In my daily giving of thanks to the Lord for His goodness to me, one of the top items is the fact that His forgiveness enables me to move beyond my failures. He never forgets to meet my every need and He doesn’t even forget my feeblest efforts to serve Him. “[God] who remembered us in our lowly state,…His mercy endures forever.” (Psalm 136:23)

Wheat genome blueprint accelerates innovation 2019

Written by Sarath Peiris Breakthrough research in creating a comprehensive blueprint of the wheat genome will bringdisruptive innovation to wheat breeding, predicts University of Saskatchewan crop scientist Curtis Pozniak, whose team played a key role in the successful international wheat genomics project.

“The wheat blueprint will enable us to decipher the genetic basis of important traits in wheat, such as genes responsible for resistance to fungal diseases and pests. That is the disruptive part.

What took years to do before can now be done in a matter of a few weeks,” said Pozniak, a wheat breeder at the Crop Development Centre (CDC) in USask’s College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

New knowledge generated by the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium over the past 13 years is

expected to have a huge impact on global food security, with the planet’s population projected to reach 9.6 billion within three decades.

“From a breeding perspective, the blueprint will enable us to develop DNA markers for breeding. These markers will allow us to improve the efficiency of selecting important traits, which will ultimately help produce better wheat varieties over the long term,” Pozniak said.

The next step for the USask team will be to lead the 10+ Wheat Genome Project—a larger-scale international initiative to sequence more than 10 cultivated wheat varieties from the main growing areas across the globe.

“We are very excited about this project. The idea is not use just one genome sequence, but make a comparative analysis of many sequences simultaneously,” Pozniak said. “To understand

what genes do in wheat plants, you need multiple sequences so you can start comparing to really appreciate all of the differences. You can then associate these differences with important traits we select in breeding programs.”

Andrew Sharpe, director of genomics and bioinformatics at USask’s Global Institute for Food Security and co-lead with Pozniak on the wheat genomics research, is also excited that the new project will yield a lot of data on genomic variation that will help the agriculture industry respond to environmental changes.

“We’re hoping to work out all the different gene variations that could have an impact on traits,” Sharpe said. “Basically, we will end up with a catalogue of variation and how it impacts a crop in the field.”

Because the CDC has been involved from the beginning of the wheat genome project, re-

searchers here have the benefit of a two- to threeyear early access to the information, he said.

“You will see that reflected in the new varieties that ultimately come out of the breeding pipeline,” Sharpe said.

“By helping with selecting the most opti-

mal plants in a breeding cycle, you end up with better performing cultivars being generated quicker than they were.

That’s important, particularly in a changing climate,” said Sharpe.

Kirby Nilsen, a recent USask PhD graduate and now an assistant

plant breeder at CDC, is among the first researchers worldwide to use the blueprint to develop pestresistant wheat crops.

He used the genome sequence to identify genes responsible for solid wheat stems, which act as a barrier to sawfly damage.

Mitacs funding sparks student innovation

Pilot project advances applied research for industry partners Five Saskatchewan Polytechnic students are tackling bullying and creating augmented reality systems with innovative new applications they’ve developed through applied research projects.

The students, enrolled in the Computer Systems Technology diploma program, are the first polytechnic recipients of Mitacs funding in Canada, thanks to a new pilot project recently opened to Canadian colleges and polytechnics. Mitacs is a national, not-forprofit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for 19 years. Working with polytechnics, colleges, universities, 4,000 companies, and both federal and provincial governments, Mitacs builds partnerships that support industrial and social innovation by funding student research internships.

“This was a trial to find out how well polytechnics and colleges could take advantage of this program, and the results turned out to be a win-win for both the students and their industry partners” says Dr. Terry Peckham, research chair with the Digital Integration Centre of Excellence.

and Rafael De Luna partnered with the Restorative Action Program (RAP), a non-profit group that works with Saskatoon’s public and Catholic high school divisions.

RAP provides local high schools with facilitators who offer students counselling, conflict resolution and leadership skills training.

Peckham says RAP needed a new system to measure the effectiveness of their program. “Until our students became involved all RAP could do was use anecdotal evidence, so we’ve started the process of building a system to track and quantifying some of those results.” He adds that no one in the field has addressed this challenge.

As a result, “within a few years they will probably become the leading research base for this type of interaction with high school students throughout the world.”

“We were very impressed with the entire process,” says Winston Blake, RAP’s executive director. He says RAP originally approached Sask Polytech with the idea of digitizing their current system, but the students explained why a complete overhaul with real-time, quantifiable data would better serve their needs. “The students were able to educate us about how technology can

work within the context of our program,” says Blake.

“They helped us understand the availability of current technology to actually meet our needs.”

The other Mitacs grant supported a partnership project with Glacier FarmMedia (GFM). The students, Corey Janzen, Luke MacNeil and Rafael De Luna, were tasked with creating an augmented reality application for GFM’s Ag in Motion outdoor farm expo, held annually near Langham.

With a three-day show that has over 450 exhibitors and 30,000 visitors, Ag in Motion had a very specialized need for a custom app.

By downloading the app onto their cellphones, expo attendees gained access to wayfinding information, event details and schedules, bonus information about crop varieties, the inner workings of farm machinery and much more. In return, GFM’s exhibitors (and GFM themselves) gained crucial insight into the attendees’ interests and behaviour, such as how many attendees walked by each booth, how many stopped and for how long. “There are all sorts of wonderful types of tracking information that the exhibitors get, and Ag in Motion needs,” says Peckham.

Ag in Motion plans to continue development of

the app, with enhancements coming forward each year.

The impact of these applied research internships is mutually beneficial for students and industry partners. Industry partners gain access to

cutting-edge technologies that lead to measurable outcomes, while the students gain knowledge that is very difficult to obtain in a classroom setting.

“The skill sets the students learn are incredibly valuable,” says Peckham.

“Our students were able to impress the clients enough that they’re coming back for more work, and the companies get to move their applied research projects forward that they weren’t able to move forward before.”

“I took my first year of University in the Faculty of Education at the Southeast College in Weyburn and had a great experience. The class sizes are small which makes it easier to get used to university classes. The classes are also personal which makes it easier to understand and stay on task.

I also received a $1000 scholarship from Southeast College for taking my classes there. Since I chose to take my classes in Weyburn, I was close to home and with my family all the time. Taking classes in Weyburn made the transition from high school to university easier and less stressful. Taking my first year classes in Weyburn was a great experience and I would encourage anyone considering coming to Weyburn to do it!”

“Highway patrol officers are providing valuable support to the RCMP and municipal police services,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Lori Carr said. “We are pleased to add six new officers as they will improve response times for emergency calls and the valuable service the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol provides.”

The Saskatchewan Highway Patrol is made up of special constables with the authority to enforce the Criminal Code, federal, provincial and municipal statutes relating to road transportation and the licensing, registration and operation of vehicles.

Officers have completed extensive training in tactics for 911 calls, such as clearing a house of suspects and high-risk vehicle stops. Officers have also received training in dealing with people with mental health issues, in addition to learning the Criminal Code and the requirements for the collection and control of evidence.

Commercial vehicle enforcement remains the primary responsibility of the Highway Patrol. These uniformed officers have the authority to stop trucks and complete vehicle weight and safety inspections, enforce speed limits and other rules of the road.

However, the officers will be responding to emergency calls and enforcing traffic safety laws, to support their role on the Protection and Response Team (PRT).

The PRT has helped increase the presence of uniformed officers in rural communities in an effort to deter crime.

PRT was created one year ago to reduce crime, particularly in rural areas, by bringing together highway patrol officers, conservation officers, RCMP and municipal police officers.

PRT vehicles are equipped with Automatic License Plate Readers funded by SGI, which use infrared technology to scan licence plates as officers drive and alert them when the plate is linked to a stolen or unregistered vehicle, a suspended driver, a reported impaired driver or even a person wanted by police.

Farm Credit Corp. helps out Minor Hockey

On Jan. 19 FCC did a cheque presentation for the Carlyle Minor Hockey Association for $250.00 for the purchase of safety bumpers to divide the rink in half to help keep the kids safe while playing their games. The kids were super excited to pose for the picture before playing their 8:30 a.m. games at Carlyle Minor Hockey Day.

Margaret Ann (nee Petch) Jackson Oct. 17, 1939 Dec. 27, 2018 Margaret lifted her last glass of wine in a toast to a life well lived on 27 December 2018 at the age of 79. Left to celebrate her life are her children, Donna (Dale); Jo-Anne (Brian); Sandra; her six grandchildren, David (Nicole), Amanda (Keith), Whitney (Kent); D’Arcy (Wayne), Leland (Carson) Seanna ( Jon); one grandcat, Tucker; her seven great-grandchildren Kari, Will, Roan, Leah; Madison, James; Wesley; her sister, Gwen Haaland; her inlaws, Don and Marilyn Wyand, as well as nieces and nephews, lifelong friends and new friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Allan, parents Harold and Berniece Petch, brother, Jack Petch and grandson, Shaun Guillemin. Margaret spent the last 18 months of her life living at Villa Royale in Saskatoon where she enjoyed quilting, playing Bingo, Kaiser and other games with her new friends and acquaintances. She was quick to tell stories on herself to make others laugh and always tried to maintain a positive attitude throughout her life’s trials and tribulations. Interment will be held at Arcola Cemetery Sunday 19 May 2019, with a short program and social to follow in Kisbey.

Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Margaret.

Obituaries

Marion (nee Statler) Thompson

Aug. 9, 1918 - Jan. 15, 2019 Mom passed away peacefully at Central Haven Special Care Home in Saskatoon. Central Haven was her special home for the past several years and we thank the staff for their excellent care and many acts of kindness.

Marion was the second of 8 children born to Leroy and Ella Statler. She was born in Indian Head and except for a period during WWII when she worked at a factory in Ontario, she was a lifelong Saskatchewan resident. She married Forrest (Dutch) Thompson in July, 1946 and began a career as a hard working farm wife and Carlyle and district community member.

Marion met all the challenges of farm life with determination and loved the supportive friendship of wonderful neighbors and community members. Dutch and Marion were avid community supporters and were always quick to volunteer and be involved. This was particularly true to support their children and grandchildren. They were Carlyle Cougar hockey fans and enjoyed many hours at the arena. They travelled many miles to attend the grand kid’s hockey and ball games and special events. Gramma enjoyed every trip and every opportunity to be with her family. She loved camping, being at the lake, a good joke and sharing meals with family and friends.

Marion is survived by her sister Ida and three children – Judy, Carol (Malcolm) and Neil (Karen); 9 grandchildren - Aaron, Dawn, Tristan, Katie, Michael, Joey, Patrick, Tucker and Kaelen; and 5 great grand children – Kolten, Erin, Dannie, Grif�in, Ben and Finley.

Dutch and Marion moved to Coteau Place in Arcola in 2007. Dutch passed away in 2008 and Marion moved to Saskatoon in 2014. We enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Marion’s 100thbirthday this past August. We have many fond memories of our Mom and Gramma – she lived a long and loving life.

In lieu of �lowers, donations can be made to the Glen Morris Cemetery in Carlyle, SK. “God saw you getting tired, So he put his arms around you And whispered come to me”

Robert Calvin Hill 1932 - 2019

Robert Calvin Hill passed away peacefully at the age of 86 years on Thursday, January 3, 2019, in the Whitewood Community Health Centre, Whitewood, SK. Bob is survived by his son Bill (Carol), White City, daughter Carol (Harry) Fletcher, Regina, and son Ken, Round Lake; his grandchildren, Rochelle Hill, Vancouver, and Cameron Hill, Edmonton; and his great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Grayson. He is also survived by his �iancé, Carol Thomas, Carlyle, his brother-in-law/sister-in-law, Vincent & Joyce Waynert, Broadview, his sister-in-law Eunice Barthelette, Edmonton, and several special nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Myrtle (nee Waynert), his parents, Anne and Richard, his brothers, Edgar and Allan, and his sisters, Irene and Idelle.

Bob was born on April 8, 1932, on the farm in the Silverwood district southeast of Whitewood.

During his childhood, he lived with his parents in Whitewood and surrounding area. Bob’s work life began as a farm labourer in the early 1950s, then as a lineman in the Yukon for two years. After that he worked on the railway, drove school bus and gravel truck. He also farmed for 44 years, starting in 1962.

Bob and Myrtle were married August 1958. They bought a house in Burrows in 1959, where they lived until Myrtle’s passing in 2002. Bob continued to live there until 2012 when he entered the care home.

Bob met Carol Thomas in 2004 at one of the dances where he was playing in the old-time country band.

Together they enjoyed many happy times attending dances, sightseeing and visiting many friends in the surrounding communities. Bob’s children appreciate the unwavering love and support his �iancé, Carol, gave to their dad through the remainder of his life.

Bob enjoyed his farm around Burrows. He especially enjoyed being a musician, entertaining others and making many new friends through his music. Bob was a great family man and was very compassionate towards others.

His family would like to thank staff at the Whitewood Community Health Centre for their exceptional care of Bob for the past six years. They would also like to thank his friends and family who visited during his stay there. Anyone wishing to make donations in his memory may do so to the Whitewood Community Health Centre, 921 Gambetta Street, Whitewood, SK S0G 5C0 or to a charity of their choice.

Bob’s funeral service was held Friday, January 11, 2019, in the Whitewood Legion Community Hall with Brenda Zelko of�iciating. Bill Hill provided the eulogy, and Ken Hill was the urn bearer. In tribute to Bob’s musical talents, there were numerous musical tributes including Hertha Briggs playing a prelude of hymns on piano, and some of his fellow band members, Jim Maddock, Garry Dickson, Francis McDougall and Keith Olson, leading in the hymns “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace”, and “In The Garden”. As a tribute to Bob’s Irish heritage, the band performed “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” as a recessional. To further honour Bob, some other local musicians joined the band following the service for a “jam session”. Interment took place in Whitewood Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Whitewood.
