Quilts benefit Gainsborough residents

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury The residents of the Gainsborough Health Centre have been enjoying handmade quilts that were created by the Cut ‘N Sew group from Faith Lutheran Church in Estevan.

Bright colours and soft, fuzzy fabrics were woven into the quilts, and some of the residents chose their own quilt to take back to their rooms.

It started with a conversation between Lori Moncrief – whose mother, Gladys Holitski, is a resident of the health centre – and Clara Freitag, who is part of the group at Faith Lutheran.

“I said something about how ‘I think they could use some new lap robes or quilts, and I just kind of left it at that. And then a couple a couple weeks later Clara said ‘Lori, I have something to tell you.’”

At that time, Freitag announced the women from Cut ‘N Sew were working on quilts to give to the health centre’s residents.

“Each quilt is special and individual. Each has their own character,” said Moncrief. “Some were soft and cuddly. Some were bright and colourful. There was a big mixture of designs. I think the ladies put a lot of time and effort into what they did.”

Freitag and Irene Demas delivered the quilts.

The residents were impressed with the thought that went into each of the blankets and how each blanket made them feel comfortable.

“It was quite amazing, actually, to see 16 quilts that were all displayed for the residents, and it’s a little overwhelming,” said Moncrief.

Moncrief said families of residents also appreciate that their loved ones are provided with these cozy pieces of comfort.

The quilts served as a nice early Christmas present for the residents.

Moncrief was surprised at the gifts given by the ladies of Faith Lutheran.

“Our loved ones need and deserve these labours of love. I had mentioned getting lap robes for the residents and it wasn’t too long after that Clara told me her sewing group was working on it. “ Freitag said the quilts turned out wonderfully, with the variety of colours and patterns.

“There was everything to make a person feel warm and just make them feel good. It was fantastic,” she said.

Alternatives to use of plastics

By Calvin Daniels There is little doubt that waste plastics are a major environmental contaminant these days.

That is not to suggest all plastics need to be abandoned and forgotten. It would be folly to think after decades of reliance on plastics for such a wide variety of things that we could move away from them completely, at least anytime soon.

But, the issue remains a serious one because plastics simply do not break down once they are tossed into landfills, or our oceans.

Plastics have a half-life that seems only slightly shorter than many radioactive elements, and perhaps in terms of long term impact are only slightly less dangerous.

National Geographic suggests plastic kills millions of marine and land animals every year.

And it has also been reported we are all consuming microplastics, which frankly can’t be seen as a good thing.

While we may not be able to stop the use of all plastics, we can at

least begin to more seriously consider alternatives.

As it stands one report suggested the current rate of plastic production is about one billion tons in three years according to a 2016 article in ScienceDaily quoting a University of Leicester study.

In that regard agriculture can most certainly play a role.

For example hemp is one of the earliest plants that our ancestors cultivated and used, with archeological finds showing evidence of the use of hemp fiber some 10,000 years ago. Cultivation of the plant goes back nearly as long.

Since it is related to marijuana cultivation was all but abandoned in most countries, but a more liberal view of marijuana should pave the way to grow hemp again.

The biodegradable nature of hemp makes it an appealing alternative to a range of products now made out of plastics which at best become an environmental nuisance and at worst a serious danger.

Similarly, wool could well return to use in far more products than it is today.

Started in 2010, the “Campaign for Wool is a global endeavor initiated by its patron, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, in order to raise awareness amongst consumers about the unique, natural and sustainable benefits offered by wool.”

Wool is intriguing since it is renewable, sheep growing a coat of it each year And it too is biodegradable. “At the end of its useful life, wool can be returned to the soil, where it decomposes, releasing valuable nutrients into the ground.

When a natural wool fibre is disposed of in soil, it takes a very short time to break down, whereas most synthetics are extremely slow to degrade,” www.campaignforwool.org All that is needed is for consumers to demand more products from hemp and wool and farmers will move to supply both, with the environment being the ultimate winner.

Conservatives should pick best leader for all regions

By Murray Mandryk The interest out here in who gets picked as the next Conservative Party of Canada leader goes beyond the obvious reason.

The obvious reason is that most of Western Canada and Saskatchewan (especially, rural Saskatchewan) voters did vote Conservative, so who becomes the leader of the party of their preference has added significance.

Normally, that means people voting the candidate who is most likeable, closest to home and most in line with Western views and interests.

But the lessons of the 2019 federal vote, suggest it may be time for Conservatives to consider more than that.

Let’s begin with issues of likability and personality.

One of the reasons why Andrew Scheer was selected to succeed Stephen Harper was the smiling Scheer came across as more personable. Unfortunately, voters across the country didn’t consistently take to Scheer.

Yes, Conservative popular vote under Scheer did increase 2.5 per cent to 34.9 per cent in 2019 from 31.9 per cent in 2015. Yes, under Scheer, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s majority government the Liberals achieved under Harper in 2015 was reduced to minority.

And, yes, Scheer with his young family and constant references to his humble up-bringing in Ottawa, did seem to be a lot more relatable to many Canadians than the more aloof Harper.

But what became obvious during the federal election campaign is that there was something about Scheer that didn’t necessarily click with all voters, especially urban Eastern Canada, that had helped deliver Harper and the Conservatives a majority government in 2011.

Some will now argue Scheer became “untrustworthy” and “unlikeable” because of issues like claiming he worked as an insurance broker when he was not licensed to do so or not being completely forthright about his dual U.S.-Canadian citizenship.

Certainly, the post-election story of Conservative party donations paying for his children’s private school tuition paid that came out as his own party members were pressuring him to resign might not have helped.

All this seemed rather unfair to a guy that truly is a likeable dad.

But what it mostly demonstrated is that personality perceptions can be fleeting in politics and probably not the thing in which anyone should solely use as their basis for picking a leader.

Similarly, to base your choice on a nation leader on the fact that he comes from your province where the party happens to be popular may not be the most fruitful approach.

It’s interesting to note that while the Conservatives increased their popular vote in194 of the country’s 338 seats, it’s popular vote decreased in 144 ridings. Many of those ridings were in Eastern Canada, where the Conservatives lost ground.

This is not to suggest that the Conservatives automatically need to pick their next leader from the East or that likeability isn’t an important consideration.

For example, selecting the prickly Pierre Poilievre, an early favour choice among those in the party on the right and from the old Reform movement, would seem stand to re-create many of the image problems for this party.

Poilievre has been around for awhile, but there is little to suggest that he has developed a broadbased appeal.

Moreover, of the problem under both Harper and Scheer is that the Conservatives struggled to relate to other areas of Canada, it seems unlikely that picking the most right-wing, least affable leader will solve that.

Perhaps what’s needed is a leader that can translate needs of Canadians to solid policies while not necessarily seeming uninterested or dismissive of issues like the environment.

It won’t be easy, but the Saskatchewan Party found Brad Wall as someone who seemed to be able to relate to both rural and urban voters.

Choosing a national leader has to be about more than just your views and interests.

Needing to warm up again Last February, while temperatures plummeted for days on end, I was out of the country.

I remember seeing a headline announcing “Saskatchewan Hasn’t Had a February Cold Stretch Like This in 80 Years” while the city of Constanta, Romania, where I spent the month, was experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures. So having missed out on a lot of the deep freeze last year I Shelley Luedtke realize I shouldn’t be complaining…so I won’t. Or at least I’ll try.

My husband and I were on a day-cruise out of San Diego a few years ago when we met two other couples seated at our table for one of the meals. In the course of introductions everyone mentioned where they were from, which prompted comments about the weather associated with each region. The couple from Florida answered questions about a recent hurricane and said that while they escaped damage this time around, they hadn’t been quite so fortunate previous years and have had to re-build sections of their property on multiple occasions. The ones from Ohio could commiserate, having experienced the devastation and clean-up that accompanied tornadoes a few different times. But when they found out we were from Canada, and in particular the prairies, they were beside themselves wondering how anyone could live through the cold winters. Personally, with decent resources and good decisions I like our chances against the cold as opposed to tsunamis, volcanoes, fires and typhoons. Others are in situations far worse, yet somehow people feel sorry for us.

A statement by my oldest daughter has me thinking about the cold in a bit different way this year. She lives in a tropical location, having moved there about 14 months ago. In a conversation earlier this winter she was talking about things she missed, and most of it was what one might expect. Then she remarked, “But one of the things I miss most is the

feeling of getting warm.”

In a climate where the temperature varies little from day to day, she misses coming in from the cold and reaching for comforts like cozy blankets and a mug of hot chocolate and then feeling the chill dissipate to be replaced by warmth.

I never thought of it in those terms before, but since her comment I have been thinking about how we experience temperature. A couple instances stand out for me; like being in the skating shack that stood next to the outdoor rink in the community I lived in as a young child. Friday night skating parties brought everybody out and while I have fun memories of being on the ice, I also remember vividly the crackling fire inside the shack which we would stand around to warm up. Within moments those cold hands, feet and noses felt so much better as we soaked up the heat that was made available to us.

The other instance is one I didn’t experience myself, but instead saw the consequences. My younger daughter experienced damaging frostbite on four of her toes during a winter camping trip with her postsecondary school. She received good emergency and follow-up care and we are grateful that healing occurred. But I remember when the dressings were changed and her foot was exposed to the air—room temperature air—the pain she experienced due to how sensitive her toes now were. Once the new dressings were applied her toes felt the warmth of being covered once again. It wasn’t a thick covering, but enough to be warm again.

When the temperature begins its descent we need to take steps to provide protection and safety for ourselves—and for others. We need to be generous in donating coats, gloves, scarves and blankets, or offering assistance with a heating bill for someone who may not be able to keep their home warm.

Maybe it could be putting extra tins of soup in the Food Bank bin or showing up with a steaming cup of coffee for someone who has to be outside. It doesn’t take a lot from any of us to ensure more and more of us experience the feeling of getting warm again.

That’s my outlook.

How to socialize your new puppy

Socializing puppies early is the key to making sure they develop into well-adjusted dogs. Most experts agree that between two and four months old is the ideal age to begin. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Register for puppy class An obedience training program will expose your pup to other dogs and people, while teaching them how to respond to basic commands. Learning alongside other puppies

trains them to concentrate on you, even when there are distractions.

Bring your dog everywhere Let your dog accompany you on as many errands as possible. Walking your canine companion through town is a great opportunity for them to become used to the area’s sights, sounds and smells. If your puppy is comfortable with it, allow all types of strangers to greet and pet them.

Invite people over Dogs need to learn how

to greet visitors into their homes as well as on the street. Inviting other people and dogs over to meet your pooch will illustrate that visitors are welcome and that there’s no need to protect the home from them.

Socializing dogs is important but it does leave them more exposed to disease. Until they’re fully vaccinated, be sure to keep them away from off-leash dog parks and other places where they may come into contact with unfamiliar canines.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • Just to warn you that on February 1st distracted driving fines will be bumping up from $280 to $580 and four points on your licence.

We know this is going to catch some people off guard being they don’t read this article, or any news articles and they don’t listen to the radio.

Distracted driving includes using, holding or manipulating a cell phone. If you get caught twice in a year you will lose another 4 points off your licence and a further fine of $1,400. Now if you get convicted of a third offence the fine increases to $2,100 and a further 4 points. It is time to put down the phone and drive responsibly.

• As more people get alarm systems we can guarantee we will con-

tinue to see an increase in false alarms. Fortunately some alarms include a video option and property owners can view the inside of their residence. The issue still is if no key holder responds to a call from the alarm company.

• One of our colleagues in Manitoba responded to a call of a stolen vehicle. It had been left running with the keys in the ignition.

While conducting this investigation they located a vehicle with Saskatchewan plates and called the owner from our area who had not realized the vehicle was stolen. The vehicle had been in a locked garage, however, an individual or individuals broke into the residence, found the keys, broke into the garage and stole the vehicle. The vehicle was then involved in a gas and dash in Souris before being abandoned and another vehicle stolen. Our investigation is continuing as are the two investigations in Manitoba.

Upon knocking on one door a dog occupying that residence got out and attempted to determine if Police taste like pork.

The Member was provided first aid by another Member who has advanced training and was then brought to the hospital for further treatment. Fortunately, the injuries were minor and the Member quickly returned to full duties. The strays were subsequently reunited with their owner and the Member, being a dog lover, believes the matter requires no further follow up.

dogs attacking cattle and the owner of the cattle having to shoot the one dog. This bothered the owner of the cattle being they are animal lovers, however, they are entitled to protect their livestock.

• Members checked on the release conditions of an individual.

The individual tried to run out the back door, however, there was a Police Officer there. They were arrested for being outside their residence contrary to the curfew conditions being they were caught outside.

Discretion was utilized and the individual was not charged. Ironically, if they had just stayed inside the residence they would not have been arrested. I guess it is the “Cops, run” theory that failed this individual being they had no reason to run.

• An individual with 17 warrants attended our Detachment. It appears they wanted to start of the New Year with a clear conscience. They were brought before a Justice of the Peace and released to attend court in another jurisdiction.

Another individual also left a residence in an intoxicated state, however, they were not adequately dressed. Again Members made patrols and again the individual was safe and warm when located.

• “Deer, DEER” yup many think the passenger is yelling “Dear” but they mean “Deer” We had two collisions with deer and the two deer did not survive.

• We are investigating a break and enter to an abandoned farm site.

There was also damage done to the property.

The Bendtsen Clan – Edgar, Shirley, Steven, Lesa, Bradly and Hayley attended the wedding of Nicole Bendtsen and Cassidy Willerth on Jan. 18 in Estevan. Nicole is the second daughter of Todd and Laurie Anne (Weyburn). Despite the cold weather – a very god time was had by all. Congratulations and Best wishes Nicole and Cass in your next life’s new adventure.

Leonard and Lil Patton travelled to Yorkton on Jan. 17 in order to attend the Meridian Canadian Open Curling event over the weekend, returning home on Sunday evening.

If I wasn’t at Alida Rink this past weekend, I was glued to the television watching the Pinty’s Meridian Canadian Open Grand Slam Curling – once again there was lots of good curling to watch even though our Canadian women couldn’t seem to keep up to the other teams, especially the European team.

The women’s finals had Sweden’s Team Hasselborg defeating Korea’s Team Kim – wow could those women ever curl. Don’t think Team Hasselborg ever missed a shot. The men’s final had two Canadian teams competing for top spot. Team Jacobs against Team Epping – thought it was going to be a onesided game for a while, but was proven wrong. An extra end had to be played and it was again another superb game with Team Jacobs coming out on top.

Another curling event completed so now have to wait before the next curling event is televised.

The “Alida Rink Winter Games” got underway in the evening on Thursday, Jan. 16 with a couple of scheduled hockey games. This hockey activity carried on throughout most of the weekend. There were six recreation teams that registered for these games

– Redvers, Bellegarde, Storthoaks, Carievale, Oxbow and Alida. Unfortunately there were no curling games to watch during the weekend, only the activity on the hockey ice and much activity there was as the teams played round robin games then had playoffs in three events. As spectators either watched hockey or waited for supper to be served one could watch a card game or two of Bridge. Of course there was the usual visiting being done among those in attendance and the little ones always seem to enjoy showing off their running skills. A very delicious pork supper with mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables, three salads and dessert as well as smokies and perogies was served to approximately 120 guests. Following supper the hockey games soon got underway once again and the draws for the Chinese “paper-bag” auctions were made and many happy winners gathered up their prizes. The results of the tournament were as follows: C-side final had Bellegarde winning over Storthoaks; B-side final had Alida defeating Carievale and in the A-side final Redvers won 1st by defeating Oxbow. Bringing the evening to a close a dance was held, with a fair good crowd in attendance.

It was Breakfast at the Rink again on Sunday, Jan. 19 which saw Kitchen Group # 4 in charge and they served up a total of 40 breakfasts – Way to go guys and gals, another small but successful morning due to the cold weather I’m sure and another job well done. It’s just great to see so many familiar faces coming back each week and enjoying the breakfast.

Even a card game or two may also be enjoyed before calling breakfast all done. Next week it’s Kitchen Group # 5 at the helm – and the question remains –

Will they beat or match the Breakfast Challenge total of 60 which was set at the first breakfast? Only time will tell – see you at the rink.

Larry Greenbank and Chris Haussecker enjoyed a couple of weeks at Lihue, Kauai with friends recently. It is a beautiful island with many spectacular beaches, rain forest, mountains, golf courses and many other interesting locations to explore. A day trip to Pearl Harbor was memorable.

I found some old copies of the Wawota Signal last week. This was our local weekly newspaper started in 1958 and published in Kipling. News from the 1968 issue, Jan. 19 showed that the Signal was struggling financially and was asking for more local advertisers, there was teacher unrest as the government tried to abolish collective bargaining and the UCW made a motion to limit the number being catered to in the church to 80 people. The Glen Adelaide Homemakers did some fundraising to donate to the hospital and Carol Easton won 1st place in the Senior Essay Contest sponsored by the Wawota Legion. Brings back some memories

Carlyle Novice Cougar teams meet at Minor Hockey Day Nathan Coffey Sports Contributor The Carlyle Novice Cougars (Chris) were back in action on the weekend of Jan. 18 and 19 when they played at home against Carlyle (Scott) and White Bear.

They won both games with scores of 11-6 and 32-1 taking their record to 5-0.

Game 1: Sat, Jan. 18 vs Carlyle (Scott) In an all Carlyle match-up for Carlyle Minor Hockey Day, the boys laced up their skates and had a spirited bout against some school and classmates.

The game started as up-tempo as one of team manager Danielle Steeles pump up play lists. The game went back and forth with both teams getting some great looks and real good scoring chances. “Brick wall” Brown, like games before, was solid in the crease and

some great defines help the opposition to only 6 goals.

Breaking up rush after rush was Xander “The Postman” Brown.

In case you’re wondering he’s called “The Postman” because no matter what the situation he always delivers.

Also playing great was Keenan “Sharknado” Winkler.

He played like a swirling dervish of hungry Great Whites, and there was blood in the water. Odds were if you saw the puck then “Sharknado” was either right there or in hot pursuit.

Academic path leads LaFleur from USask to around world

By James Shewaga Jamie LaFleur’s road to convocation has featured a few stops and starts and twists and turns, but most importantly, a long list of life-changing experiences.

The 31-year-old University of Saskatchewan (USask) honours student in anthropology from the Lac La Ronge Indian Band graduated with a bachelor’s degree at Fall Convocation 2019, and is now working on her next degree—a master’s in community health and epidemiology.

A cornucopia of courses and countries— studying geology, kinesiology and anthropology, along with trips to New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Thailand and Ukraine—have helped LaFleur find her true calling.

“I was always interested in health and well-being, which is one of the reasons that I wanted to go into kinesiology,” said LaFleur. “But I just realized that it was way more fulfilling for me to focus on Indigenous social

determinants of health, especially within Saskatchewan.”

LaFleur started studying geology at USask in 2006/07, but left school to work full time, later moving to New Zealand where she became a certified personal trainer. She returned to university to take kinesiology, but became fascinated with her elective courses in anthropology, which quickly became her new passion. LaFleur’s studies took her to Africa, Asia and Europe as she experienced new cultures and traditional healing around the world and now speaks six languages: Cree, English, Norwegian, Russian, Thai and Ukrainian.

“I was always interested in health and medical practices globally and being able to experience that just opened my eyes to different modalities that people use to address their health issues,” said LaFleur, who earned a USask Indigenous Student Achievement Award for Research in Health Sciences in 2018, after being nominated by one of her first professors

on campus, Dr. Ulrich Teucher (PhD) in psychology. “Biomedicine can’t do absolutely everything for everyone and just finding a lot of parallels between Indigenous medicine here and other Indigenous Peoples world-wide, has been really interesting.”

It was USask’s study abroad program that presented the proverbial passport to the world for LaFleur.

“It’s such a valuable experience, especially when you have all the resources that we have here at this university,” said LaFleur, whose experiences abroad included getting married in Norway on a bikepacking tour with her husband Morgan in 2016.

“It’s something everyone should experience,” she added. “You go to any country in the world and you come back to Canada and you realize that there are these same communities that live within Saskatchewan. You learn more about the cultural mosaic, as some people say, and it gives you a better understanding of where you’re

In addition to the scholarships that helped fund her study abroad opportunities, LaFleur is grateful for the supports that are now available for Indigenous students on campus, as well as guidance she received from her professors.

“I don’t think that I would be as strong of an academic or as strong of a person, if it wasn’t for my professors in anthropology,” said LaFleur.

Where the wild pigs roam

By University of Saskatchewan In 2013, Ruth Aschim—along with 99.9 per cent of the population—was unaware wild pigs were roaming rural Canada.

Today, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) doctoral candidate is an expert on the animals, where they thrive and the destruction they can cause. But landing a wildlife research position at a university is no easy task, she explained.

“Wildlife research is expensive; you’re using GPS collars and aerial surveys and things like that. A lot of people are interested in it, so it was hard to find a program that would take me.”

Among the academics she approached was USask Associate Professor Ryan Brook, whom she’d heard about as an undergrad.

The wild pig problem emerged from livestock producers’ desire to diversify their herds for export markets.

The boars proved more difficult to manage than expected. They rooted under and jumped over fences, while producers also simply opened the gates and let them go.

Many thought they would not survive in the wild.

They were wrong. And although there are large numbers of them, they’re not easy to find.

“Because we’re looking at a nocturnal species, an elusive species… we couldn’t use aerial surveys, the conventional wildlife monitoring technique, because we didn’t even know where they were. How were we going

to go looking for them?

“I did all my data collection through social science techniques. I spoke with stakeholders and wildlife professionals. I would travel around Saskatchewan going to wildlife-related meetings or events or fundraisers, giving presentations and just talking to people.

“Then I spent three months living out of my vehicle (in summer 2015) and I camped across Western Canada, talking to conservation officers and biologists.”

Results showed that wild pigs are the most widespread in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta; smaller populations exist in B.C., Ontario and Quebec. But despite all the research, it’s still impossible to say how many wild pigs are out there.

But why does establishing the numbers and habitats of wild pigs matter?

“Disease is a huge concern with wild pigs,” Aschim said. “They can be transmitted to domestic livestock, wildlife, and humans.

“Then we have environmental issues, which are huge with wild pigs. One of the main problems is the rooting behaviour; they upturn the soil because they like to eat the roots and tubers of vegetation. It’s essentially like a rototiller went through an area.”

Bare soil is open to weeds, erosion and nutrient cycle disturbance, as well as a loss of biodiversity, she said.

Furthermore, one would not want to surprise a boar.

They’re not aggressive unless threatened, but their four sharp tusks—the top tusks sharpen the bottom ones—can slash someone quite seriously.

Considering the many problems created by wild pigs, Aschim is often asked how she feels about her research subjects.

“I don’t like them,” she tells her questioners, “but I respect them.”

Saskatchewan Polytechnic launches Bachelor of Applied Management program Written by Saskatchewan Polytechnic Starting in 2020, graduates with a non-business diploma or journeyperson certification can enroll in the Bachelor of Applied Management program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and earn a bachelor’s degree in just two years.

The program is unique in Saskatchewan and was developed to assist non-business graduates gain necessary skills to move up in the workforce. This is the third stand-alone degree developed by Sask Polytech in direct response to labour market demand.

After completing two years of university transfer science courses, she went on to finish a Bachelor of Science at the University of Calgary. It was there she had her first real ‘a-ha’ moment about what made a MHC education so special.

“I was sitting in my first big lecture hall with four hundred students and thinking ‘Oh my God, what is happening?’ because that was not what I was used to. At MHC, you just had so much more one-on-one time with your instructors which improved the education for sure, but quite frankly it improved the fun.”

In addition to the solid education she received at MHC, she also had the

opportunity to connect with people and develop relationships – skills that have served her well in her career.

Wanner finished her medical degree at the University of Alberta and returned to Medicine Hat for her residency.

With strong roots in the community, she established her medical practice, started her family and began building the life she wanted to have. After 13 years, the busy mom of three closed her practice and moved to the MHC campus clinic, allowing her more time for family activities and non-clinical initiatives.

“The thing I love most about my job is the opportunities it’s given

me. My training has allowed me to create the job that I want and give me that independence to really tailor my work,” says Wanner, who is also involved with improving pediatric mental health services in Medicine Hat. Being back at MHC, Wanner says she has come full circle. “In a way, I see myself in so many of the students that come to see me. I know they just want to get to where they’re going, but I want to tell them to sit back and take their time. Enjoy the ride - you’re going to get there eventually if that’s where you’re meant to be.”

Carievale 4-H Beef Club news Submitted November and December Report The Carievale 4-H Beef Club held their November meeting on Monday, November 4th, at the Young Dale Angus Farm. The meeting was called to order at 6:45 pm. Members handed in their items for the food bank. Teams were discussed and formed for 4-H Team Grooming being held in Re-

gina at Canadian Western Agribition. Mikyla and Damian Cliffe did a presentation to the club on “Judging”. The members then judged 3 heifers and Mikyla reviewed the results with the members.

On Monday, Nov. 25, Jordan Cowan, Andee Cowan, Bella Buchanan, Billie Cowan, Ryan Cowan, Kade Taylor, Dane Taylor, Ben Buchanan and Vanessa

Cowan participated in the 4-H Team Grooming Event at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina.

A fun time was had by all.

The December meeting was held on Monday, Dec. 9. Group member pictures were taken.

Numbers were drawn to determine sale order and speech order. Each member will present their speech at the January meeting on January

13th. Animals will be weighed on Jan. 4 at the Young Dale Angus Farm.

Denise Bigney-Allum did a presentation on “Clean Water and Feed”.

Members participated by weighing feed in cups and competing in the soda cracker challenge.

The Carievale 4-H Beef Club hosted the District #41 4-H Curling in Gainsborough on Jan. 3.

Redeeming the earth and pets in heaven Theologian Father Ron Rolheiser shares this story: “Some years ago at a religious conference a man … asked this: ‘I love my dog.

When he dies will he go to heaven? Do animals have eternal life?’”

Ron’s answer: “Yes, his dog can go to heaven. It’s one of the meanings of Christmas. God came into the world to save the world, not just the people living in it.

The incarnation has meaning for humanity, but also for the cosmos itself. … because of the incarnation, dogs too can go to heaven.”

Jesus was born to save the world; the whole world. This has implications for the debates about climate change; global warming; land, sea and air pollution, and our carbon footprint. Discussion of these topics in an article of this length can not be anything but simplistic and general.

Bruce Y. Lee in “‘Save The Planet’ Really Should Be ‘Save Humans’” says, “The planet doesn’t need saving.

Even if we had an all-out nuclear war that wiped out all living organisms … the planet would still survive … What antipollution efforts really are trying to do is save humans.”

Global warming is not a myth, but it is to be viewed in perspective. Since the Industrial Revolution 1760 – 1840, the earth has warmed approximately one degree Celsius. There have been greater temperature fluctuations over time. In 4,000 B.C. earth’s temperature was warmer than today.

The .08 Celsius rise in the last three decades has some alarmed. This is believed to be caused by the release of C02 into the atmosphere – Greenhouse effect. This happens when we burn fossil fuels and destroy forests that absorb C02 and release oxygen.

The Global Warming alarm sounds when we see the recent devastating fires in Australia. Tom Morland in “Climate change doesn’t cause fires” explains that we cause fire hazards by creating huge national parks where thick eucalypt forests thrive, untouched by fire breaks, and cool buffer zones (regularly burnt every year).

The fuel load of these fires can be reduced by cattle grazing in grasslands and forest parklands, and by creating buffer zones. Some of these fires are started by humans.

If we want everyone to pay more attention

to the environment, we should emphasize the health connection. Alleviating the suffering and death of people will lead to greater concerns for the planet.

Redeeming the earth is also connected to the mysteries of the incarnation and the redemption of mankind.

Christ came to save not only us, but to save the earth itself. The question is not if but when this will come about.

“God’s saving activity in Christ reaches so deeply that it saves creation itself – the oceans, the mountains, the soil that grows our food, the desert sands, and the earth itself,” says theologian Ron Rolheiser.

Creation longs for freedom from the bondage of decay. “We know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now” (Romans 8:22), eagerly awaiting our adoption as sons and daughters of God. What will it be like when that time of redemption comes? “The wolf and the lamb shall graze together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox; and dust shall be the serpent’s food. They shall do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain,” says the Lord (Isaiah 65:25).
