Dentist plans to open ‘affordable’ clinic in Regina

By David Baxter Global News, Regina Lots of people avoid going to the dentist. For some, it’s to avoid a potentially painful procedure but for many it’s because of the cost. Without insurance, the cost of procedures can quickly exceed $1,000.

Regina dentist Blake Mitchell is hoping to offer a more affordable option with a new clinic he’ll be opening, Simpli Dental.

In an effort to reduce costs, Mitchell will be cutting some overhead. He’ll be encouraging patients to book appointments online, and once they come in they won’t be greeted by a receptionist. Instead, there will be a station to check in, and then they will be brought in for their appointment.

“Realistically what we’re trying to do is we’re really trying to automate the systems and the processes behind the dental practice,” Mitchell explained.

“What we’re really trying to do and what the challenge will be is to make sure the quality of patient care remains the same.”

Construction is expected to begin soon at Simpli Dental’s location on the 100 block of Victoria Avenue. Assuming there are no delays, Mitchell anticipates opening in mid-March.

The College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan has a fee guide, suggesting prices for a variety of procedures. The guide is reviewed and adjusted annually based on the cost of doing business.

Mitchell said the goal is not to undercut other dental offices, but offer certain procedures at a more affordable rate by reducing overhead.

“It’s not meant to take away from the existing dental practices, but more so to be a supplement to those practices who aren’t necessarily getting the treatment because of price,” Mitchell said.

Dental assistant Marissa Katzberg said she is

happy to see a new affordable option coming to Regina.

“I feel like people that can’t afford to go to the dentist, it clogs up our emergencies. Often our emergency rooms are the first place people will go to if they can’t afford to come to a clinic,” Katzberg said.

She explained that things like a cavity won’t hurt until they’re infected. This infection can affect the heart and other vital organs if not treated. This means it is important to handle oral health before it goes beyond your mouth.

“It’s worse than just our mouth often,” she said.

While she is interested in how SImpli Dental runs, she wonders what the impact may be on the economics of running a conventional dental practice.

There is a demand for affordable dental care.

Saskatchewan Polytech offers regular student clinic hours for a variety of procedures, some at a 60 per cent fee guide discount, and free Dental Days once a year.

Dental students at the University of Saskatchewan recently launched Direct Dental. This free clinic offers supervised procedures performed by students. There are three operating days scheduled in January, February and March.

The college has strict advertising rules, which limit how much Mitchell can discuss pricing, but they don’t regulate the prices themselves.

“We just don’t regulate that. We’re a complaint driven body, so if someone were to complain with us about a service they received or something of that nature that’s when we would get involved,” college executive director Jerod Orb explained.

Lessons we can learn from protestors

By Murray Mandryk The biggest problem with protests isnt necessarily the protestors but how we react to them and their message.

This has clearly been the frustration for pipeline protestors, including those at an event last week in front of the Legislature in Regina.

The loss of oilpatch jobs because of a downturn in the oil economy made worse by the lack of pipelines is a serious problem. Yet it very much seems the federal Liberal government and Eastern Canada cant hear the concern.

This was Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moes message last week, when he stood before the protestors in -30 windchill.

We feel like weve been left out in the cold, Moe told 200 or so pro-pipeline protestors.

I know at times it feels like no one is listening to us.

Moe’s sentiments were echoed by other speakers at this rally, including organize Cody Battershill who emphasized his groups message was to be based on positivity, respective and inclusivity.

Prior to the event, Battershill made it known that the so-called yellow vest protestors were not welcomed or at least, they would not be welcomed to wear their yellow vests. The yellow vest movement has come to be associated with violence in Europe.

And here in Canada (including rallies in Regina) their messages have also been about anti-immigration and anti-vaccination and images threatening Trudeaus safety.

Wear your hard hats, wear your work coveralls, but please dont wear the yellow vests because thats not what our movement is about, Battershill told the Leader-Posts Arthur White-Crummey.

Sometimes, protestors messages do get sidetracked.

But the far bigger problem is that people often dont listen, preferring to simply write off all protesters as malcontents or neer do wells. Certainly, many, in the federal government and Eastern Canada seem to be doing this pipeline movement because of the fringe.

Admittedly, last weeks protest did have its political leanings, with Moe and other Saskatchewan Party politicians at the podium and federal Conservative politicians like Senator Denise bashing federal Liberals at the microphone. (That said, this would hardly be the first protest we have seen in front of the Saskatchewan Legislature with a tinge of political partnership.)

Nevertheless, one can appreciate Moes frustration and the frustration of pipefitters, riggers and others those whose livelihoods are now at stake.

But there also is more than a little irony here.

It wasnt so very long ago that Moe and his government encountered a very different kind of protest in front of the Saskatchewan Legislature.

It was the so-called teepee protest that started almost a year ago after Gerald Stanleys not-guilty verdict after being charged with second-degree murder in the death of Colten Boushie.

That protest camp morphed into Justice for our Stolen Childen, focussing on past and present problems with Saskatchewans child welfare system.

Of considerable controversy was Moes decision not to visit the teepee camp or even meet with the protestors.

His stated reason for not doing so is that these campers were conducting an illegal protest, unlikely last weeks noon hour protest that had permits from the Wascana Centre Authority.

But in another irony, Moe found himself apologizing the day before the pipeline protest for the Sixties Scoop, government policy of adopting children from Metis and First Nations child and raising them in white homes.

This was actually a huge part of the very concerns raised by the teepee protestors this summer, who raised both historic wrongs of the Sixties Scoop and ongoing problems with social services.

Those protestors were also very frustrated by a politician that would not meet with them.

So maybe the lesson here is that we should all take the time to listen.

You never know what side of the protest you will on.

Popcorn for breakfast . . . and any other time, too From the time I was a baby my family would go camping in B.C.’s Okanagan Valley. The region boasted all sorts of fruit and vegetable stands and I quickly learned to read the signs advertising available produce. One of the first words I learned to spell was C-O-R-N. Yes, I am a fan of the cherries, peaches, nectarines and more, but my absolute favorite stop was for corn because that Shelley Luedtke meant corn-on-the-cob that night at our campsite.

It’s probably not a big stretch then to find out I am also a fan of popcorn. It is a snack food consumed in places all over the globe with consumers in North America accounting for approximately 42 quarts per person. I am eating my share.

About 70% of popcorn is eaten in our homes with 30% consumed at movies, stadiums and in schools.

It is nutritious (at least before all the toppings and coatings are added), rather inexpensive and its appeal makes it a popular party choice as well as an effective fundraiser--although some organizations are getting push back on this and some school boards are grappling with where it falls within their healthy guidelines food policies. Nonetheless, the market share for the product continues to grow.

January 19 has been designated National Popcorn Day. Well actually it can’t officially be named a ‘National’ Day because that would require an act of congress, however lobbyists have been successful in marketing it to the point of inclusion on some calendars and talking points for producers. Now, more than ever, there is something to be learned from the humble kernel.

Within each kernel is amazing, untapped potential just waiting for the opportunity to be realized.

Yet it doesn’t come easy. In fact, until the kernel is placed under intense heat and pressure it will remain but a kernel. If the temperature is not high enough it

simply won’t pop and become what it is expected to be. Without pressure and heat there is no popcorn.

Sometimes the same can be said of us. As hard as it may be, sometimes it isn’t until we endure intense heat and pressure in life that we become who we were meant to be. We need to be put through a type of refining process to see what we are truly made of and what we can become.

It won’t come easy but then little that truly matters ever does. Take a look at those who revolutionized how we eat popcorn. It went from use as a breakfast food to the ultimate in home and theatre snacks thanks to innovations, inventions, and investments that took us from large steam machines to the placement of a popcorn setting on most microwaves today. All thanks to a series of people who made and lost fortunes and kept pursuing ideas despite naysayers heating up the sidelines. Or consider those that have clawed their way back after heartbreaking setbacks, or have overcome obstacles that put them under tremendous stress, then to rise with dignity and grace.

Where do we find those people? We work with them. We are their neighbours. They are the ones who quietly go about pursuing plans and dreaming dreams and demonstrating what character, perseverance and decency look like. It’s why they are the ones who should be getting our attention, and why it’s time to be done with some counted amongst the rich and famous who do little more than escalate anger, threaten those that disagree with them and stir their “followers” to violence. We need to shut out those who think it fits the context of entertainment or political activism to intimidate and ridicule. Or worse. Where is the example in that?

Want to be inspired by someone? Turn off the noise and take a look around you. They may not be famous and powerful, but rather are admirable and commendable.

Make a bowl of popcorn and invite someone into a conversation. Let them be your example. Just like the popcorn it will be fun, entertaining and really good for you. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Don’t marry your wedding day plans You and your partner have spent months planning the perfect wedding. But there’s at least a chance it won’t be – perfect, that is. Realities often necessitate alterations to even the most detailed plans -- especially when it comes to grand plans for a wedding day. Murphy’s Law has it that Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. And that definitely applies to weddings.

• A server drops your wedding cake and instead of cutting it, you end up having to scrape it off the floor.

• The groomsman is late for the ceremony because his car broke down.

• Your beautiful garden wedding is forced indoors by a sudden rain storm.

• On the dance floor, a guest steps on the train of your very expensive wedding dress – rip! Ouch!

As your wedding day edges ever closer, you have probably worried that calamities like these and a dozen more conjured up by pre-wedding panic could render your perfectly planned wedding … imperfect.

But the key to a happy wedding day is this: Don’t marry your grand plan. Focus on the celebration and your marriage. If something happens … it happens. And maybe it’ll end up being one of the best memories from your most memorable day.

Still, you have done the right thing – because you do need a plan that should include a wedding budget you can comfortably afford that won’t leave you saddled with debt, and the honeymoon of your dreams at a cost that won’t cause recurring nightmares.

And plan beyond your wedding, too. Begin with the everyday basics, such as who will manage day-to-day finances — pay the bills and so on — and who will manage your overall financial affairs.

Decide if it’s best to maintain separate bank accounts, credit cards and investments or to merge some or all of these to eliminate duplication and enhance financial benefits. Each of you should disclose assets, financial commitments (such

as loans) and credit history. If either of you will be bringing personal assets to the union — a car or home, for example — decide whether to keep them or sell them. Make all your decisions with a clear understanding of the tax and legal implications, especially if you are bringing significant assets into the marriage.

And speaking of taxes: Although couples file separate individual tax returns, you should investigate the many-tax planning strategies that can reduce your total tax bill now and in the future.

Also plan to take advantage of all your deductions and income-splitting opportunities including, where appropriate, pension income-splitting and/ or spousal Registered Retirement Savings Plans that can deliver tax savings.

Depression in dogs: signs and treatments A 2013 British study found that one in four dogs experiences depression.

Given its prevalence, dog owners should be aware of how this health issue is identified and treated.

Recognizing depression in dogs Most often depression in dogs is triggered by a major life change such as a move or a new pet, partner or baby in the household.

Dr. John Ciribassi, past president of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour, explains that depressed dogs become withdrawn and inactive, their sleeping habits tend to change and they no longer participate in activities they once enjoyed. It should be noted, however, that such symptoms could also indicate a medical problem. For this reason, dogs who seem depressed should be seen by a veterinarian as a first course of

action.

Treating the condition Depression in dogs is usually short-term, lasting from a few days to a few months. Typically, dogs just need some extra attention during this time. Ciribassi recommends keeping them engaged, having them do the activities they enjoy and involving them in slightly more exercise

than usual.

However, sometimes depression in dogs is a more serious matter, particularly following the loss of an animal or human companion. In such cases, it’s best to form a treatment plan with a veterinarian.

Note that the earlier the issue is brought to a veterinarian’s attention, the more successful the treatment is likely to be.

RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons Well, another Christmas and New Years has come and gone.

Over the Holidays there was “Room at the Inn” and we had several individuals that spent time with us. We often do this to ensure an offence does not continue, or an offence does not take place. We then often release individuals in the morning without charges, however, they still may have a hangover.

Even though we always have “Room at the Inn” , however, we often give rides elsewhere to separate individuals or sometimes just with our presence resolve things. “Who called the Cops?”

A youth called 911 because they could not get in touch with a parent. We explained to the youth the purpose and importance of 911.

We had a False Alarm, we always get false alarms and we also always get Mental Health Calls.

We had a couple of assault investigations that were concluded very quick do to the lack of cooperation of the alleged victim. “Why did you call the Cops?” On one case the alleged victim stated they had “fallen”. I have been to this rodeo before, If they fell it was on a fist, however, without cooperation there is not much we can do.

Another assault investigation also resulted in a non cooperative victim. That said, the alleged accused did not appreciate the attendance of the Police and was subsequently charged for assaulting a Police Officer. In another incident an individual stopped for a traffic infraction chose to not identify themselves. This individual was subsequently charged with obstruction. I am not sure why people choose to aggravate the situation, but they do.

We responded to several more “Assaults” which appeared to be arguments. If they continued to argue after the Police left it was in whispers.

We had an allegation of assault between two individuals which is a “He said, he said” situation. This

is complicated being both parties appear to be lacking credibility. Believe it or not we get lied to a lot, like a lot. Too much, but we are use to it.

It has not been a good couple weeks for moose, elk and deer. Between Conservation Officers and Mounties one of each was put down.

We have had several thefts reported including a break and enter and theft.

As it relates to cheques, maybe, just maybe, don’t accept them. Cash or Credit only.

The boyfriend calls fearful that the husband of his girlfriend is, well, this is where it gets complicated. No charges, but we have to get this relationship down to “two only”.

There is a difference between “Harassment” and “Criminal Harassment” For the Police to be involved you must fear for your safety or the safety of others.

If it is continued communication by phone, fax or e-mail you don’t have to fear for your safety being this is Harassing Communications. That said it is so much easier to just block the number or e-mail than involve the Police.

We had another individual report they responded to an e-mail and provided their Social Insurance Number and date of birth. They were provided the number to the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre 1-888495-8501, changed their password and obtained a new bank card.

One of our hotels had an unwanted guest who refused to pay or leave. With our assistance they left.

A gold coloured vehicle was observed driving erratically and leaving the road. Patrols were made, however, unfortunately we did not locate the vehicle.

We issued a $360 ticket for a minor possessing liquor. This driver also received a 60-day driving suspension for alcohol in their system due to the driver having a graduated licence. We also provided a 72 hour driving suspension to another driver. The message of don’t drink and drive is not being heard.

Our Members were busy over the holidays. The most expensive speeding tickets were $562 and $570.

If SGI will not register your vehicle don’t drive over to the RCMP and complain to them. We subsequently towed the vehicle for not being registered and the driver was issued a ticket for driving while suspended.

One individual was pulled over for speeding and showed their displeasure by utilizing profanity and sarcasm, and the Member showed their displeasure and gave a ticket, wait, nope, the Member just gave out a ticket and warned the violator that the roads were icy and to be careful. Apparently the violator already *&^%$ new that. Shortly afterward the same Member pulled over another violator, they pulled over quickly put on their 4 way flashers apologized, admitted they had been speeding and - tada, they got a warning.

Several people were issued tickets for not wearing their seatbelt. It is not like it was legal last year and not legal this year.

We had individuals who received warnings, inspection notices or tickets for no insurance $580, fail to provide certificate of registration $100, Fail to Stop $230, obstructed licence plate, fail to produce drivers licence $100, insecure load, no drivers licence $150, unlawful sun screen or window tint $115, fail to wear seatbelt $175, discard a burning substance from a vehicle $150, stunting, unattached licence plate, permit or use wrong licence plate $175, inadequate daytime running lights, excessive damage to windshield $115.00, inadequate licence plate lights, and obstructed window. *** The following is a synopsis of some of the interactions we had over the week of January 3rd to January 10th. There is more, some we cannot discuss and some which we should not or can not discuss.

We received a 911 hang-up from one of our schools. We were initially unable to contact anyone upon calling back and Members were dispatched, however, the Principle was able to confirm everything was OK previous to their arrival.

There was a fight at a residence between a couple of intoxicated individuals, one who was arrested and lodged after being deemed medically fit by a Doctor. Apparently this individual had a disagreement with the back of the patrol vehicle and struck the area with his fist. The officers did not observe the rear area of the Police vehicle strike back.

Members responded to another fight amongst intoxicated individuals at a residence. Two individuals were provided a place to rest and sober up and were released later without charges.

A call of an assault in an multi unit dwelling resulted in one individual being lodged. It appears one neighbour was less than neighbourly with the other and a physical confrontation occurred as well as some minor property damage. The alleged victim does not want changes. That is so neighbourly of them. Unfortunately for the arrested individual, well they had to stay a little longer so that our Justice of the Peace could release them on outstanding charges from Yorkton that they “Forgot about” A driver was stopped by the Fillmore Detachment and provided a warning for their driving and ........well, they did not heed this warning. This driver was then stopped in Arcola after another complaint of erratic driving. A $280 ticket for Careless Driving as well as a warning for not notifying SGI of an address change was provide by the Police. Some people don’t listen.

If you want to destroy a firearm and you are not sure how to do it contact your local RCMP Detachment. We will come to your residence and we will have you sign some paperwork and we will destroy it. We do not suggest you walk into our Detachment carrying a gun. It does not look good.

Many people are released previous to court on conditions. This would be on a Recognizance, or an Undertaking, or after court on Probation, or as part of a Conditional Sentence Order which is a sentence served at home. Many don’t comply with these conditions, some as simple as reside at a certain location, not consume alcohol, curfew and not have contact with another individual. We are now looking for an individual who chose to live somewhere else.

This is not a bad thing, it is just they needed to advise the RCMP first.

We had an individual that had one of their on line accounts hacked. They unknowingly bought two video game consoles. The Anti Fraud Centre was made aware and fortunately the victim is not paying for someone else electronics.

Three individuals failed to appear in Court as per their release documents. When you go to court you should stay until you know for certain what happened. One individual heard their name, the matter was set over to be called back and the individual chose to leave. When they were not there later in the day a warrant was issued for their arrest. They were subsequently arrested and brought to court in Estevan. Another individual found out we were looking for them and they turned themselves in. This individual was also brought to Estevan. The third individual is still on warrant status. Two out of three is not bad.

An intoxicated individual was causing problems at one of our Hospital’s. Members attended and lodged the individual and released the individual later on charges of Mischief.

From Page 6 - RCMP report Members were occupied with another call when they were advised of an individual that may be stranded on the side of the highway in Kenosee.

Fortunately our good friends in EMS located this individual and provided them a ride to a safe location.

A 911 call was received from an intoxicated individual. A Member was just across the street and attended. This individual had obviously over indulged in their use of alcohol and marihuana and they were arrested for Mischief (Property Damage). They were not happy and threatened a Police Officer, which as you can imagine was counter productive. Now they were not just getting a room to rest and recuperate, they were being charged with Uttering Threats. We never did determine why the individual called 911, that said this is not the first time someone has called 911 on themselves.

Members responded to a break and enter in progress. This incident was observed from the neighbours by the owner of the residence and their neighbour. They had a hockey stick and were, well we were not sure what they were going to do but it is Canada and winter so a hockey stick is a good thing to have, or is it? Members were dispatched and there was a Member in the area, however, the suspect was the son of the owner and all was resolved before the arrival of the Police. Believe it or not we don’t mind these calls. We would rather be on the way and aware instead of getting the “A half hour ago, or a day ago I saw . . . ” We are investigating a gas and dash in Redvers.

We were able to identify the thief and charges are expected shortly.

An intoxicated individual was dropped off at a business in Kenosee. This individual was disorderly and causing problems. Upon arrival of the RCMP this individual was arrested and lodged and released the following morning. No new charges were dealt with, however, there were outstanding charges that were dealt with by providing the accused a new court date.

We are investigating allegations of harassment.

If you know someone does not want to see you, or is afraid of you, don’t be going to the same place they go to. If you do so, don’t be surprised to hear from the RCMP. With modern technology it is amazing how quick we panic when we can not contact someone. Sometimes, people don’t want to respond to your text message, e-mail, or phone call. Give it some time.

Although we don’t wait 24 hrs to initiate a missing person investigation, as you see on Television, we don’t panic when your friend, family member, significant other or child does not respond to your efforts to contact them instantly. Please consider the fact they may not want to hear from you.

We had an intoxicated individual leave a residence in the cold winter weather. Before Members could attend and locate this individual they smartened up and returned home. They may have been hot and bothered when they left, however, the cold weather probably cooled them down.

A vehicle was noted to have a driver without a seatbelt. The vehicle was also noted to have a cracked windshield and red tape for a tail light. This was a “Farm Truck” and the driver suggested it might not need to be repaired. If it is registered and drives on a Highway or Roadway it must be road worthy. Even if it is a “Farm Truck” An individual was stopped for rolling through a stop sign, upon approaching the driver the Police Officer noted the seatbelt was not properly worn.

Upon bringing this to the attention of the driver they responded with words to the effect “Thanks Mom” The sarcasm continued and they received a ticket for the stop sign and improper use of the seatbelt.

When provided the tickets the driver stated, “Thank you I needed sometime to wipe my rear end with.”

Sometimes I think we should carry a shovel so that when people begin to dig a hole for themselves we can make it easier and provide the shovel. This individual was only going to get a warning, however, they got two tickets. We get paid to do our job, we don’t get paid to take abuse. Trust me I checked the Criminal Code, Provincial Statutes and our own Policy. It is not there.

We received a call from a complainant who was stuck between a pilot vehicle and a wide load in blowing snow and, well I am not sure what to say.

Members actually looked out the Detachment window and watched the vehicles go by. If it is windy and it is snowy drive for the road conditions. We should all know by now getting behind a semi is such conditions is nothing less than counter productive.

Members noted a vehicle hauling a trailer with invalid registration and when they attempted to pull the vehicle over with lights and sirens the vehicle did not pull over for an extended period of time. Folks, sometimes one should look in their rear view mirror, maybe turn the music down. I am not sure what else to say except this violator received two tickets.

One for the trailer not being registered and one for failing to pull over to the right when approached by an emergency vehicle.

Tickets were issued for: No Insurance (four in total) $580 , speeding (Most expensive $209), seatbelt (five in total) $175, fail to comply with licence endorsement $150, and stop sign $230.

Inspection Notices were issued for: properly attach licence plate to vehicle, repair rear bumper, remove window tint, and replace windshield.

Warnings were provided for: speeding, stop sign, stunting, inadequate mudflaps or fenders, fail to produce registration. fail to produce drivers licence, obstructed licence plate, and fail to dim head lights.

Please don’t forget that this is Saskatchewan and the road conditions can change quickly. Ensure you have a full tank of gas, a fully charged phone and warm clothing.

Farmers begin to plan what to plant

By Calvin Daniels With the new year off and running farmers can begin in earnest to plan what they will plant this spring.

Actually in today’s agriculture much of the planning in terms of cropping choices is longer term in nature, with what will be grown on a specific piece of land often predicated by what was grown there the previous years, the chemicals used in the previous years, and the plan for the land in the future.

But a plan needs to be flexible in terms of cropping options because there are a number of variables well beyond the ability of the producer to control which can come into play between harvest and planting each cropping cycle.

The most obvious of course is the weather.

Last fall across most of the Canadian Prairies the harvest season was extended to the first snowfall for many producers by unusual weather.

The extended harvest will mean many producers did not get the prep work for 2019 carried out that is usual in terms of post-harvest, pre freeze

up operations including fertilizer applications, and straw control. Those operations will now be pushed to this spring for many putting added pressure on for the weather to be good in the prime weeks for seeding.

If the weather does not cooperate what producers will plant is likely to change if a time crunch transpires.

It’s the same scenario in terms of moisture conditions.

The fall was extended by rain, but in most areas we are not talking a deluge. Rather it was constant showers that stopped harvest.

So far this winter snow conditions are not excessive either.

What will that mean for moisture conditions in the spring?

That remains to be seen as a lot of snow can fall from mid-January to whenever winter decides to come to an end, and of course what early springs rains might come our way as well.

Past the always present impact of weather on

cropping decisions farmers have to be watching the business news these days to see exactly what might transpire in terms of international trade because of politics.

Politics have become the real bugaboo for farmers.

At one time politics influenced the farm sector when countries fought for trade market share with subsidies that put a wrench into the works of normal supply and demand economics.

Today the situation is less about subsidies and more about sanctions.

The issue of course is that the current sanctions which pop up to often impact the movement of farm products are not directly related to agriculture; an example being China in a snit over the arrest of a Huawei executive in Canada on a U.S. warrant which has that country threatening Canada with sanctions which could include limiting agricultural trade.

With such uncertainties in play, producer planting plans may be set today, but could well need adjustments before the wheels turn in the spring.

Cougars hold on for the win in a physical battle

Nicole Currie Sports Contributor Friday night, Jan. 11, the Cougars headed to Oxbow to take on the Huskies. It was a battle as each team was grinding it out for the two-point win.

Clayton Geiger struck early into the first with help from Brett Turgeon and Kelly Currie. That was the only goal scored in the first, but it wasn’t without trying. Both goalies played well making some huge saves.

The second period ended in a tie at 2, as Oxbow got on the board six minutes into the game with a goal from Derek Cooney. Cooper Fox sniped one for the Cougars, giving them back the 1 goal lead. The assist went to Kelly Currie. Oxbow’s Kolby Fleury, tied the game up with only a minute left in the period.

The excitement of the third period with an even score, kept the fans for both teams, on their toes! It was a physical and eventful third with four penalties called and five goals scored. Interference, slashing, a misconduct and the always thrilling penalty shot, were the penalties called.

The Cougars took a two-goal lead shortly into the period with Geiger getting his second of the night with assists going to Turgeon and Shaw. Mason Belanger scored the fourth goal with an assist from our goalie, Landon Audet! Closing the gap from Oxbow was Taysen Holt, scoring an unassisted goal.

Halfway through the period, Mitchel Morrison went down on a 2 on 1 and sniped one, making it a 5-3 game. With 5 minutes left, Taysen Holt scored his second of the night and it is back to being 1 goal away from being a tied game. With less than 3 minutes till the horn, Derek Cooney is awarded a penalty shot and is denied by Audet! A huge save for Cougars and they hold on to win 5-4.

Vanessa Kirkpatrick Sports Contributor This weekend our boys travelled to Virden, Manitoba to compete in a two-day tournament on Jan. 12 and 13.

First game Saturday morning was against Oak Lake. Cougars won 15-7 and Seth Kirkpatrick was awarded player of the game.

In the afternoon they finished the day out strong winning against Elkhorn 13-5 and Rylan Levesque was awarded player of the game.

Sunday morning the boys played hard but took

a loss in the first game against Virden Koop, losing 13-9 and dropping them into the D final. Kirk Rutten was award the player of the game.

After a short break, they took on Wayway, wining 11-9 and Mason Hunt was awarded player of the game.

Their final game of the weekend was against Rivers and they pulled out another win of 25-2 placing 4th overall at the tournament.

The boys had a great weekend, had tons of fun, with lots of smiles and laughter.

The Alida community extends their condolences to the family of Harry Vercammen on his passing on Dec., 2018 in Saskatoon at the age of 70 years. Harry is remembered by his wife Dini (of 63 years), his children Gerry, John, Jim, Michael, Betty, Danny, Jerry and their families, as well as many friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Linda in 2012. The Vercammens began farming in the RM of Reciprocity in 1956 and continued to farm until 1966 when they retired to Redvers. One will always remember seeing Harry riding his bike around town and always ready to lend a hand wherever needed. They later moved to Saskatoon to be nearer family. His funeral service was held Jan. 3 in Saskatoon.

Gary and Brenda Junk spent from Dec. 29 to Jan. 1 at Sylvan Lake where they visited their family, Kara and Moran; Jody, Jill, Jaxon and Jace. From Jan.2 to 6 they visited the Hot Springs, at Fairmont, BC and also watch grandson Jaxon participate in a hockey tournament at Invermere, BC. Alida Rink is becoming a very active and busy place. The hockey ice is all set ready for lots of skating, including public, hockey practice and hockey games. The curling ice is also all ready to go – scrimmage games, rock throwing practice and bonspiels are being scheduled. Even card games (mostly cribbage) are happening during some evenings. The kitchen is also opened most evenings when there is something scheduled. Friday evenings is when most (if not all) activity is occurring at the rink. This past Friday (Jan. 11) was one of the first evenings when

it was very busy – approximately 20-30 skaters were enjoying ice time, a curling practise for four and a table with about six card players, as well as everyone enjoying the camaraderie. Come on out and check things out, meet up with friends and enjoy an evening out. There’s a schedule calendar posted at the rink, don’t forget to check it out and find out what’s happening.

Another busy place in Alida these days is the Alida Golden Gate Centre. A group of us do try to gather every Tuesday afternoon for a few games of Whist. It’s usually lots of fun so come on out enjoy an afternoon of camaraderie. Also every Sunday morning you’ll find some ladies trying out their skill at Yoga – a great way to start your day. Can’t forget the Lion’s Club their members meet twice a month for meetings etc.

The “Breakfast at the Rink” was another success this past Sunday (Janu 13) – Kitchen group #2 served up 54 breakfasts. That’s a new total for the Breakfast Challenge (last week total 50) – great job guys and gals. Next week it is Kitchen group #3 at the helm – see you at the rink.

Evelyn and Michael Green travelled to Brantford, ON where they visited with Patricia Freeman and family and also visited with Rebecca Saunders and family at Waterloo, ON. On their way home they stopped in Winnipeg for a twoday visit with Roger and Kathy Green, Collin and Duncan.

Enjoying a holiday trip to Ottawa for the holidays were Dennis and Sarah Weatherald,

Madeleine, Amelia and Katherine. They visited with Sarah’s parents, Peter and Linda Maher and other family members.

They also celebrated their wedding anniversary while there.

New comers to Wawota are Mike and Joan Werner have purchased the former Free Methodist Manse on West Railway Ave; Allan and Coralee Brehaut have purchased the former Wes Palendat home on ChooFoo Crescent; Stephanie Leech has purchased the former Marie Charles home on Hall Street.

Maryfield Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark Circle of Friends at the Villa began the New Year remembering exciting years behind us.

Jessie remembered her mother’s sudden departure to the hospital for the birth of her baby brother. They drove nine miles in a covered caboose at midnight.

Leora and her New Year Baby, Rhonda. Janet was engaged to be married.

Many remembered going dancing New Years Eve, in halls, homes and school houses. Square dances, --The Waltz Quadrille—were

popular, with the fiddler calling the moves. If there was room a polka.

Mariann remembered home parties with up to 20 people. Fred remembered going to a dance in the sleigh, at 40 below.

Those who had cars wouldn’t start, and the horses were given extra oats. Ralph’s 37 Dodge had to be cranked after a dance at Wawota, at -30.

Ralph Mills went skating on the Pipestone on New Years day. Mary Thiessen, who grew up in Ontario, went sliding down a high hill. They had no tobaggon, only a

big blown up inner tube, which was hard to lug back up the hill. Afterwards they watched the Rose Bowl parade on TV. New Year parties always ended with the crowd joining crossed hands to sing “Auld Lang Syne.”

They still do. We did.

The Associated Gospel Church service this week was led by the Kliever family, with John on guitar and Janet Thiessen on piano. Ruth who is now one of our caregivers, accompanied her father, as he sang “The Birthday of a King” and led the service.

Harvey Joseph Carriere 1949 - 2019

Harvey Carriere, late of Carlyle, Sask. passed away at the Arcola Health Centre, Arcola, Sask. on Friday, January 4, 2019 at the age of 69 years.

Harvey was predeceased by his parents, Alphy and Wilhelmina (Zimmerman) Carriere; brothers, James and David Carriere, as well as his brother-in-law Bill Swenson.

He is survived by his partner Sheran Fontaine and her children and grandchildren; siblings, Camilla (Al) Brasseur of Estevan, Joan Swenson of Regina, Robert (Gisele) Carriere of Carlyle, Sylvia (Allan) Giroux of Claresholm, AB and Ruth Carriere (Ron Brown) of Victoria, B.C.; sister-in-law Marilyn Isabey of Weyburn, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

In keeping with Harvey’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a family graveside service will be held at a later date.

Those wishing to make donations in Harvey’s memory may do so directly to the Arcola Health Centre Palliative Care Unit at: AHC Palliative Fund, Box 419 Arcola, SK, S0C 0G0.

We have started off the new year with practices and games and leading up to Carlyle Minor Hockey day on Jan. 19, as well as our home tournament the following weekend.
