By Lois Feaver Discover Estevan The Redvers Fire Department is about to get very busy heading into the 2019 year with new equipment and training that is helping to develop the Redvers Firemen even further.

Brad Hutton with the Department mentioned they are starting off the year with some fun, “We’re hosting our Redvers Firemen’s Bonspiel in Redvers March 8th and 9th, I always encourage all members on the department to put together a team of their own. So we don’t end up with a couple teams that

are all Redvers Fire guys. We include a chicken supper with it, and its a $200 entry fee, “As to how you can register, “there are posters going out shortly, but just by phone number.”

“Another fun bonspiel, we just started going to last year, the Fire Fighter Association host the bonspiel every year. And this year in Langham, Saskatchewan so I and three others are going to go participate in it as well. And that’s December, 1, 2, and 3rd weekend. It’s always a good time if any other departments are interested in going out. Moosomin guys originally got me started on it, and then we

went last year and it was a blast. We have our team registered already. The association bonspiel if you win, you could go to Nationals if you’ve got some good curlers.”

As for training Hutton mentions, “We’ve been doing quite a bit of training in-house, coming up this year we’re going to host the SUVA Traning in our department itself. Then there is spring training that the Volunteer Fire Fighter Association hosts, every spring as well.

Cathy and Don Horbas, Winnipeg, called for dinner with Janet and Philip Mark, enroute to Saskatoon. They are retired teachers, and gave us a saxaphone and piano duet. Leora’s 86th birthday was on Boxing Day, so she celebrated with 45 members of her family at the church; and then had her Villa Party on Thursday, with wonderful family singing. Even the tiny tots know all the verses of “Away in a Manger”!

The bathroom shell at the Lions Park has been completed! Doesn’t it look great? Without volunteers, there’s no way that this would be completed as fast as it was. Lion members put in 100+ hours and Friends of Lions put in 70+ volunteer hours! That’s a total of 170 hours of volunteer labour to get this far!

Unreal! Work will continue in the spring and hopefully the new bathrooms will be ready for ball season. Thanks to the 13 Lions and Friends of Lions who have donated their time and expertise.

We always bring stuff back from there.”

“We did some training on TransCare Rescue on grain bin entrapment, and it was a really good training that was hosted in town here. And I’ve talked to Bill at TransCare and we’re going to have the simulator at Redvers AgEx this year on April 11th and we’re going to do some demonstrations and scenarios on

grain entrapment. And the process of how you rescue people if it does happen in this area.”

To help with training and the purchase of equipment Hutton was very appreciative to say, “Towards the end of the year, we had a $10,000 donation form Enbridge, and when we filled out the application we were putting it all towards heavy rescue equipment for semi’s and tractor units involved in accidents on highways. That stuff has all since been ordered and we’ll follow up when we get the heavy rescue equipment here on hand, and we will get some training and sign

up for courses on how to properly use it.”

“It’s basically training with heavy duty struts, and how to cradle semi units an actually lift them. I think each strut is capable of lifting 25,000lbs each, so we’re kind of remote for heavier picker trucks.

This is going to give us time, if we have to do a rescue, get it performed hopefully before the time that it takes to get a truck out to us.”

It looks like the 2019 year for Redvers Fire Department will be one of the exciting and innovative changes along with training to keep them on their A game.

A fundamental change is coming

By Calvin Daniels It is a rare occurrence when farming becomes a topic of conversation when I am board gaming with my usual group of friends, yet that is just what happened when we gathered Jan. 2.

The topic turned to farming when we were discussing the ever-evolving area of robotics.

While it’s not exactly clear as I think back how we started talking about robots, but we were observing that one of the confining issues with robots is there mobility. It is a huge barrier to get robots moving in a bipedal -fashion as humans do, and that for many is a defining vision of what a robot will become.

But it was quickly noted in many industries, agriculture included, you don’t need that sort of mobility.

We have seen robotic milking parlours part of the dairy industry for years now.

And many assembly lines have elements of robotics as integral elements. It is also guaranteed most farm machinery will have been created, at least in part, by robotic welders.

On the farm, at least to-date, robotics have not made a major inroad, although you will certainly see their arrival en masse soon.

Many new combines and tractors can now maneuver up and down the field in an autonomous fashion thanks to global positioning systems. Most producers are still in the cabs, along for the ride these days, but one has a sense that will change.

And once the ‘in-the-seat’ operator is taken out of the equation, real change will happen.

The actual shape of the power source, in this case the tractor, will evolve as steering wheels, and gear shifts, and visual monitors and tractor seat, will become obsolete.

What shape the new power units take will be interesting to watch develop, but a big block that is essentially just a power source with some directional computer elements are essentially all that will be required.

The new units will change how producers farm.

I recall my grandfather talking about how the tractor changed farming because horses would eventually tire and that meant the end of operations for the day. A tractor never tired.

Of course the tractor operator does tire, and finding good operators that are affordable at peak times is difficult, so machinery still gets turned off at some point.

The robotic power unit will need serviced of course, the fuel tank filled, the seed compartment filled etc, but otherwise is can go up and down the field for as long as the weather allows.

That will be a fundamental change in farming, and it is clearly a change coming sooner than most likely expect.

Prescription for doing nothing We were among the thousands affected by the power outage that hit major portions of the province on December 4. As with most people that day, the loss of power curtailed our ability to do very much. Except talk. A few weeks prior my husband and I were finding little time to talk about much except work and a project we were doing in the community.

How I wished for time to just sit Shelley Luedtke and talk. Now as we sat in the office with capacity to do little else, I was distracted by what wasn’t getting done.

Earlier this fall our schedules were full and I had moments of wishing we could have an evening of sitting and watching a movie. The last two weeks of December we found ourselves in that exact situation thanks to some medically mandated days following surgery my husband had just before Christmas. It was great--at first--and then I found myself feeling at loose ends. Surely there were things I could be doing. Should be doing. What if at the end of those days I had nothing to show for it?

As I thought about what was driving my need to be busy rather than fully enjoying the time we now had, I realized it came from the feeling many have bought into. It’s that underlying sense that unless we are being productive we are somehow guilty of wasting time. Or worse, that unless we are busy being busy we must not be very important. Or needed.

Or even…valued.

Far too many have equated their level of activity with their sense of worth. The busier they are the more important they must be. If we have free time does that mean we’re not as popular as others? Not as needed? So if my calendar is more crammed..I win.

But win what? What is the prize for our overstretched schedules? It turns out it is little more than lack of sleep, poorer health, unfulfilled relationships and lower overall satisfaction with life. Doesn’t seem like much of a reward. So why do we keep doing it?

We wear busy schedules like a badge of honor.

We’re too busy to read that new book we’ve heard so much about. Too busy to go see that movie with a favorite actor. Too busy to add yet another thing.

Too busy to attend another event. Too busy to catch up with friends. Too busy to exercise or cook healthy meals. Too busy, too busy, too busy. But by filling our days with the activities of busyness we are actually taking away from our abilities, creativity, and, as it turns out, our productivity.

It’s often when we aren’t busy ‘doing’ that great things can happen. Isaac Newton, Rene Descartes and Paul McCartney made significant contributions to their field when they were away from labs, desks and instruments. One of them while walking through a park, one while reading an unrelated book, and one just as he was waking in the morning.

Mozart got many of his greatest musical ideas while traveling in a carriage.

Breakthroughs, inspiration and new ideas happen when we are at rest. Our brains are continuously at work but often need a moment of quiet before discovery happens. If we are too busy we are blocking some of what our brain is capable of doing.

Research suggests that when we step away and stop, musicians get inspired, writers come up with ideas, and scientists see answers to things they have been working on.

A psychologist addressing a room of parents cautioned against over-filing children’s schedules.

While it is great to expose kids to opportunities, he said sometimes they need to be “good for nothing.”

They need time to play, to rest, and to let their imaginations take the lead. Adults aren’t any different.

So did I have ‘anything to show for’ those days at the end of last month? I sure did. A body that was rested, a mind that was entertained and a soul that was content. Of course we need to take care of our areas of responsibility and contribute all we can, but we also need to be okay not needing to fill all our time. That is exactly when some pretty amazing things can happen. Doing nothing may in fact be doing everything.

That’s my outlook.

A Bendtsen family Christmas gathering was held at the Golden Gate Centre on Dec. 29 with all members of the family present which included Edgar and Shirley and their family: Todd, LaurieAnne and Ciera (Weyburn), Shelby and Quinn Sidloski (Milestone), Nicole and Cass (Estevan); Lloyd, Tara and Cade (Carlyle), Vanessa, Jorja and Hayley (U of S, Saskatoon), Bailey Stigings (Regina); Steven, Lesa and Bradly (Alida). On Dec. 29 Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan left for Minot where they visited with her sister Karen, Ron and Indee Thunshell. The next day they left for a 9-day winter holiday to Arkansas and area, where they also visited with her parents Myron and Orlys Nilsen. They arrived back home on Jan. 9.

The financial report was given and a motion was made to pay the bills. Old business was reviewed and discussed.

Seven members from the Carievale 4-H Beef Club were able to attend the Manitoba Ex. Ryan Cowan, Jordan Cowan and Venessa Cowan reported the Halter Breaking Clinic. Five members from the Carievale 4-H Beef Club attended the District Rally.

New Business Public Speaking is scheduled for January 14th.

Living Skies Crossfit in Carlyle hosted an Olympic weightlifting clinic ran by Kasandra Kopytko. It was the first of hopefully many events sponsored by the South Sask. Weightlifting Initiative, whose goal is to build the sport of Olympic weightlifting in the south part of the province. Living Skies will also be hosting a weightlifting competition geared towards Novice and Intermediate level lifters at our Estevan location on February 23. Olympic weightlifting and crossfit are terrific sports for athletes of all ages to participate and also excellent supplemental training for other sports as well. Anyone interested in trying Olympic style weightlifting, crossfit or even watching the competition can contact Living Skies Crossfit for more details. Saskatchewan sees strong job growth heading into 2019 Saskatchewan saw strong job gains for the fifth consecutive month. Year-over-year employment increased by 10,900 jobs from December 2017.

Saskatchewan’s growth rate of 1.9 per cent ranked second among provinces.

The job gains were driven entirely by full-time employment with an increase of 13,300 full-time jobs. Major year-overyear gains came from the province’s agriculture sector. From 2007 to 2018, Saskatchewan had the third highest employment growth rate among the provinces at 12.9 per cent.

Oil Kings down Cougars on home ice

Nicole Currie Sports Contributor The Cougars hosted the Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings on Friday, Dec. 4, who are new to the league this year and it wasn’t the start to the last half of the season that they were looking for.

Before the game started there was a little fun to be had. Dean Harcourt had challenged the Cougars on Twitter, before the Dec. 21 match-up in Kipling, stating that the loser of the game would have to wear the opposition’s jersey at the next game.

So, Dean wore a Cougar jersey Friday night and dropped the puck for a ceremonial puck drop to start the game.

Our two MVP’s, Rogan McLean and Luca Sabourin, were all smiles as they skated out with the Cougars and stood with their dad and uncle for the singing of O Canada.

Audet made a huge save on a Kipling breakaway, 5 minutes into the game, which led to the play going down to the other end and the Cougars lighting the board up first.

Cooper Fox scored the first goal of the game with the assists going to McLean and Morrison. Shortly before the first ended, Kipling tied up the game with a goal from Blake Nicholson, and it’s off to the second, tied at 1.

Kipling scored the only two goals in the second period, from Brandon Munro and Matt Bean, to make it a 3-1 going in the third.

It was not without the Cougars trying. Austin Toth, the Oil Kings goalie, made some huge

He may not be the second coming of LeBron James, or Steph Curry, but Mississauga’s R.J. Barrett will be a big name in the NBA probably by this time next year. He’s a freshman with the college powerhouse, Duke, and is projected to be the No. 1

pick in the NBA draft this spring. Barrett is next in a long line of Torontoarea stars — Jamal Murray of Denver, Tristan Thompson of Cleveland, Andrew Wiggins of Minnesota — who are putting Canada on the map as far as hoops development is concerned.

Canadian tennis has a new star promising to make a big splash in 2019 and beyond. Redvers Rockets record a win on the road

By Laura Kish Redvers Rockets travelled to Kipling on January 5 to take on the Oil Kings. Not long into the first period, Dakota Rose of the Rockets scored the first goal of the game. He later went on to record a hat trick before the end of the game. With the Rockets having taken 44 shots on net to the Oil Kings 20 it was an easy win for the team. By the end of

the game almost every player had taken home points for either a goal or an assist.

Players capturing two goals each included John Potapinski, Remi Lamotte, Kenton Miller and Craig Gaudet. Scoring singles were Todd Gervais, Gavin Martel, Dustin Purvis and Brady Fidierchuck.

NOTICE Public Information Meetings are being held regarding the start up of a volunteer SARSAV Search and Rescue Chapter for the South East area of Saskatchewan. Meetings are arranged and hosted by a partnership between the RCMP Search and Rescue Team, SARSAV (Search and Rescue Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers), Estevan Police Service and Weyburn Police Service.

The Arcola Kisbey 4H Beef Club is back at it again Submitted by Club Reporter Tyson McLaren We started back up in October and we have two new members this year. Welcome Jackson and Kirsten.

The club is still doing the recycling program this year as a fundraiser and we have also taken on the the community calendars that was ran by the Arcola Daycare last year.

We did clean up for the JJ Trucking christ-

mas party again and will be cleaning up after the Arcola Optimist Poker derby for 2 more fundraisers.

Our speeches will take place on February 10th at the Arcola School at 2:00pm if anyone

wanted to come and listen.

That is about all I have to report for the time being. I would like to thank everyone that has supported the club in any way and those that continue to do so.
