Michael’s Coffee Shop and Bakery expanding to Estevan

The former location of Quizno’s subs on King Street will once again accommodate hungry shoppers in Estevan this spring with the opening of Michael’s Coffee Shop and Bakery.

Kelly Johnson The Observer Located on Main St. in downtown Carlyle, Michael’s has been serving up tasty items from its menu since opening in 2014. The trendy cafe moved to Carlyle from Arcola where it originally opened in 2007 and it is owned and operated by Michael Ellis and his wife Cindy.

Now Michael’s is expanding, opening a second location in Estevan.

The new location will be at #9 - 461 King Street, which is located to the north of the Estevan Shoppers Mall. Opening day for the conveniently located expansion will be mid-April to the first week of May. The store in Estevan will offer the same quality and similar menu and with time, developing its own unique character. Stuffed crepes, cinnamon buns and pizza are mainstays on the menu, as well as cappuccinos, lattes and specialty coffees.

Michael’s new location will be well-positioned in the heart of the city’s shopping district and will definitely add to the culinary experience in the city of Estevan.

The Ellises reside in Arcola, coming to the area in a circuitous route. They are originally from the Maritimes, having lived in British Columbia and Regina before taking up roots in southeast Saskatchewan.

Weekly RCMP report

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • We had an individual warned about calling 911. They thought they could use 911 to inquire with the Police as to how to find a phone number for a business. Another mistaken call to 911 resulted in the caller being extremely apologetic and embarrassed.

• We also had false alarms, a variety of mental health and child welfare calls as well as files associated to assisting other Provincial agencies and Police agencies.

• An individual reported themselves for having fraudulently cashed the same cheque twice. This had already been dealt with by the bank and due to the lack of intent it is not Criminal. It sure is rewarding to deal with people who are so honest and want to confess to offences that are not truly offences.

• We received a Crime Stoppers tip, however, by the time the tip was called in, transcribed and sent to us the alleged offence had already transpired.

Please don’t be afraid to call us. We can let you remain anonymous.

• Another call with a 1.5 hr time delay was also found to be less than valuable being when we made patrols we knew the alleged offender was long gone. We did try, but 1.5 hrs is a long time.

• Our volunteer firefighters attended and put out a vehicle fire.

Nothing suspicious and we sure appreciated their quick response.

• A funny thing happened the other day, however, some times it is not appropriate for us to share everything. Let us just say watch some video’s on social media that relate to individuals that have had medical procedures and are having some difficulty with reality due to the medication they are on.

• If you have an abandoned farm site or have family that has an abandoned farm site you might want to take the odd trip out to check on it. Recently an individual did so and found that some of their property stored in a building was stolen. They also discovered a truck stolen out of Alberta. Our Forensic Identification Section assisted with our investigation, however, we were unable to locate any evidence to link anyone to either incident. We are not sure how long the truck was there, however, we know it was stolen over

a month before it was found.

• My colleague in Moosomin, the famous, or is it infamous Sgt. Fefchak had some more good advice that I have borrowed and modified slightly.

• Be warned there are many fraudsters out there trying to get your money. You may get a call from an individual where the call display shows RCMP on the display or our phone number. This individual may suggest that you have used your social insurance number or bank account for money laundering. You may then get another call claiming that the RCMP or Police will be arresting you or issuing a warrant for your arrest. The individual will then try and get you to give them your SIN, or birthday, or banking info. I have been a Police Officer for almost 30 years and have NEVER had any reason to ask someone for their social security number or banking information. Please don’t give anyone your personal information over the phone ever, and we mean ever. Hang up!, then carry on with your day. If you are concerned call your local RCMP Detachment or bank for assistance, or if you are concerned about using the phone drop by and talk to us or your bank.

• Due to a call from the public we were able to arrest an impaired driver in October. This individual finally dealt with their charges last week and the accused now has to pay a $600 fine and $180 victim fine surcharge for driving while prohibited and a further $2,000 fine and $600 victim fine surcharge for the impaired driving offence. They avoided having to pay the ticket for the use of the cell phone, however, did have to pay $360 for having open liquor in the vehicle. All and all a good day for society.

Hopefully this individual has learned their lesson.

• We are investigating an assault involving two individuals that had previously been in a relationship. We have an obligation to investigate and lay charges if the evidence is present, even when the victim chooses not to cooperate. This is to protect victims and from my experience it is often the only way to protect victims of domestic violence.

• If someone you know blocks your phone number on their phone you so that you can not call them would be a hint that you should not call them. If this individual gets a new phone number and your relationship status has

not changed I would assume you might not want to call the former acquaintance on their new phone. Well one individual chose to do so and after a warning from the Police we hope to have resolved the issue.

• A home owner called to advise they had been made aware there were several intoxicated individuals at their residence and there was a concern how long they would continue getting along. A patrol was made and those that were not welcome left and it appears all concerns were alleviated.

• If you can’t get your vehicle started and you are in a parking lot and you think you need a boost there is a towing service that can assist with that. If you call the Police we may attend but the chances of us assisting for liability reasons is limited. That said, if you are going to call the Police you should ensure you have a valid licence, which this individual did, and valid registration which this individual did not.

No charges were laid, however, the vehicle was quickly registered before it entered a roadway.

• We just don’t understand why people keep getting behind the wheel, but they do. An individual was charged with impaired driving related offences after a injury collision on a snowmobile. Samples of 110 and 100 mg% were obtained. Another individual was charged for impaired driving after providing samples of 100 mg%. Members also issued a 72-hour suspension.

• An individual has allegedly been flicking their bright lights and honking their horn when passing certain vehicles.

We are hoping that with the warning provided by the Police this will stop.

If not we are more than willing to issue tickets.

• If your driving abstract is poor and you get pulled over for speeding, don’t blame the Police Officer and don’t beg for a warning.

It is not our fault you can’t seem to drive in a safe and respectful manner. The following are some of the comments I have heard, “I am going to have your job”, “I am going to lodge a complaint”, “You are going to regret ever meeting me”, “You don’t know how to do your job”, “Anyone could do your job”, “Why are you not catching real criminals?” and “Don’t you have anything better to do?”

• Members issued approximately 25 tickets and 65 warnings over the past week.

• Tickets were is-

sued for fail to stop at stop sign - $230, inadequate windshield - $115, operate unregistered snowmobile - $100, operate a commercial vehicle contrary to the hours of service regulations $150, no drivers licence -$150, Fail to display licence plate -$100, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, exceed 60 km/hr when passing an emergency vehicle - $310, and most expensive speeding tickets were for $306, and $776.

• Warnings were issued for fail to stop at a stop sign, insecure load, inadequate headlamps, fail to produce drivers licence, inadequate tires, fail to produce registration, obstructed licence plate, inadequate mudflaps, hold more than one copy of a licence, fail to produce drivers licence, fail to display licence plate, no drivers licence, fail to maintain a daily log book, fail to display temporary registration permit, and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate tail lights, inadequate windshield, inadequate headlights, inadequate day time driving lights, inadequate licence plate lights, transfer an out of Province drivers licence, obtain a valid licence, inadequate speedometer, inadequate muffler or exhaust, and illegal tint.

Rail blockades must end

By Murray Mandryk There is a bottom line to the railway blockades and the other illegal protests across the country in support of the Wet’suwet’en fight against the Coastal GasLink project.

Illegal protests have to stop.

Arrests would be unfortunate and perhaps counterproductive because such confrontation only heighten tensions between First Nations/environmentalists and others. This could add to the difficulty of finding long-term solutions.

But this may be the necessary reality.

The biggest problem in our nation right now is we’re really not bothering to listen to each other. Or, worse yet, about the only thing we seem capable of hearing is the slights each side directs at the other.

Consider the comment made by Conservative leader Andrew Scheer that First Nations and other protestors need to “park their privilege” in these protests.

It was an odd thing to come from a high-ranking politician who enjoys considerable privilege, free residency by virtue of his position, being just one of them. It’s especially odd coming from Scheer, whose ousting from his party leadership has had a lot to do with a previously undisclosed arrangement in which party donors wound up paying for the private schooling of his children.

But this has little to do with laws being broken during these protests, something that’s clearly unacceptable. You can be someone with fierce environmental concerns or someone of First Nations heritage with strong views on past and present wrongs, but that doesn’t given you the right to break the law.

And even if Scheer’s remarks were unhelpful, should they have “disqualified” Scheer from being invited

by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to a joint federal leaders’ meeting to discuss possible resolutions to the protests and blockades?

In this minority Parliament that Trudeau said should be all about the “need to ensure that we are also listening to each other” wouldn’t it have been been appropriate to include all points of view?

Wouldn’t that include Scheer’s view that does include the notion that the majority of elected and even some hereditary Wet’suwet’en chiefs sosupport this natural gas pipeline?

Ultimately, all of us in a democracy must not only live by majority rule, but also the rule of law.

You can’t break the law just to get your own way. And this is not a situation, as Assembly of First Nations Grand Chief Perry Bellegarde put it, about criminalizing what’s otherwise a political protest.

The law is the law.

But all this said, there’s always two sides to every story. It’s really easy to criticize those who break the law and maybe even easier to do so when those breaking the law seem intent on justifying why they are doing so.

Less easy understanding why First Nation and other protestors are so adament in their oppositon.

Sure, some of is purely driven by one’s philosophical worldview and that isn’t always a foundation for rational logical or deep understanding of issues in play.

Chants of “you can’t drink oil; keep it in the soil” during a recent downtown Toronto protest in support of Wet’suwet’en pipeline opposition seemed to badly miss the fact that this is a natural gas pipeline that could, arguably contriibute to greenhouse gas reduction.

However, what also might not be well understood is that the Wet’suwet’en First Nations did not sign treaties and their traditions do provide a legitimate role for hereditary chiefs in this debate.

Similarly, complaints that Coastal GasLink put undue pressure on elected chiefs to agree to this pipeline route when alternative routes might have been available further complicate matters.

But regardless of how legitimate the grievance may very well be, you aren’t doing to find the solutions in illegal protests that are sometimes thousands of miles away.

It makes no sense. A country cannot function this way.

Just another hero . . . or not A familiar adage cautions us to never meet our heroes lest we discover they have feet of clay.

The danger is that we find out just how ordinary and fallible they might be. In not living up to our perceptions of them, we could end up disappointed or deflated.

They’re not who we thought they were--or perhaps they’re not who we built them up to be.

Shelley Luedtke In any number of settings from educational to social, we are asked to think about the people we would most like to meet if given the opportunity. One of the most common is: which historical figure would you most like to have dinner with? Our answers might change over time as our interests and experiences change.

My list has included a king, a philosopher, a writer, and a 18th century composer, yet even as I recall these, several others come to mind that I would add today.

Narrowing the question might be fun. Which celebrity would you most like to spend a day with in New York City? Which of your ancestors would you choose if you could ask three questions of them?

Who would top the list of world leaders you would like to share a conversation with? Yet as interesting as any of these ventures might be, there would be part of me that would be reticent, too. Not so much feeling leery of meeting a hero, but of questioning my own definition of the label.

What if the people I should really want to meet are ones I know little about. It’s not so much a caution against meeting our heroes, but instead examining who our heroes are.

There are business people, venture capitalists, innovators, and celebrities who are generous in their resources toward fighting poverty, isolation and homelessness. We can be grateful for their philanthropic efforts. But last winter I met a man who was a powerful example of what giving can look like without that kind of money. Tony grew up in misera-

ble conditions in a country where his ethnicity led to discrimination and abuse. Nothing about his life was easy, nor was education attainable. But Tony came through all of that with the most amazing heart and compassion for others. He and his wife live simply so that they can help as many others as they can.

They are making a huge difference in their community in Eastern Europe and changing lives each and every day. They don’t have access to the resources others have, but what they are accomplishing out of their lack, is remarkable.

Robbie, an eight-year-old boy in Florida, entered a loving adoptive home after spending difficult years dealing with abuse that led to two hospitalizations. Unable to express emotion in a manner familiar to most of us, it was after the death of the family dog in his new home that he was finally able to cry.

He loves visiting animal shelters and is said to seek out the “oldest, mangiest, least adoptable mutt of the lot”, and is determined to care for as many as his family with allow. His other dream is to one day become a foster parent. Drawing on his experience of feeling that people “only want babies and puppies” he is determined to love those that sometimes go unseen.

The greatest gestures may not be the biggest, nor the biggest heroes amongst those who are considered the greatest. But they are likely the people we would be best served to meet. Or, perhaps more precisely, to recognize we may have already met them. The problem is they may have gone unnoticed because they are the first to shrug off the label. They believe they are simply doing what any of us should: look after one another.

Redefining who our heroes are will open the floodgates, and our eyes, to the many all around us. The great thing is there’s little risk in meeting them because we already know who they are. Let’s just make sure we seize opportunities to invite them for dinner, ask some questions and share a conversation. Yes, they have feet of clay. It’s what ensures they keep their feet on solid ground.

That’s my outlook.

Normally, the brain’s glymphatic system uses cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to remove these proteins and other waste products. But if these proteins accumulate in the brain, they can destroy healthy neurons, thereby causing various symptoms.

The Book Club at the Wawota Library met last Monday at the Village Inn. They discussed the latest book, “Beartown”

by Fredrik Backman. It is a story about a small town that is slowly dying and their great hope of revival is the upcoming hockey game that their local team in the national semi-finals. A win would put Beartown on the map and bring some needed industries to the town. All their hopes are placed on the shoulders of these 17-yearolds. When a crime is committed most of the town want to ignore it and everyone is picking

sides. It was very true as to what happens in real life.

Wawota would like to welcome Paul Wipf to Wawota. He is from Saskatoon and has purchased Florence Hutchison’s home on Lonsadale.

Also a welcome to John Trinidad, who came to Wawota last November from the Philippines. He is Jordan’s brother and works at Moose Mountain Meats.

We look forward meeting his wife and daughter when they join him here.

The Time and Talent Committee met at

the church last Sunday to check on the progress of the plans for the event on Mar. 15. Donations have been slow in coming in but usually pick up closer to the event.

The Keith Olsons had their granddaughters spent several days with them during spring break. Sarah and Kate Heffernan from Regina were here as their mother, Stacey and Carey Lamoureaux travelled to St. Albert to visit Cindy Olson and Dan, and Morgan. (They missed Emma Buhr as she was on a holiday to Mexico).

Eunice skied behind a horse. Marie knew how to lay out Fox and Geese, a game in the snow.

Carol’s family slid down hill on a cardboard.

Clifford’s friends were overjoyed when a mild spell gave them a pool, where they skated during the next blizzard.

Fred played hockey on a slough, with willow sticks and horse turds for pucks. For Ralph Mills winter meant skiing and reloading bullets. Ralph Burke built a workshop.

Changes coming to Southeast Regional Library in Carlyle

By Kelly Johnson The Observer If you regularly visit or just occasionally stop in at the Carlyle Library, you will be seeing changes.

The library is going to have a renovation coming this spring, which will see a new layout, a reconfiguration of technology and new flooring.

A library is important to a community and is a goal-orientated service, which requires ongoing planning and programs to keep it successful.

The renovations with the renewed floor plan will make it easier for patrons to find books and items and streamline all services it provides.

The goal this year, which is vital to providinga quality experience for those using the library, is to reach 6,000 checkouts of items available at the library. These items include books, DVD’s, E-books, audios, kits and video games.

The importance of this goal is the library functions under a process that determines its resources by how many items are borrowed. If an item does not get loaned out over a period of time then it is removed from the libraries collection.

If you are at the library checking out a certain topic, take the time to see what else is of interest to you and borrow whatever you would like more information on.

Library cards are free, as well there is no charge to borrow, the more items you borrow the more resource materials the library is provided. This practice if adopted by those using the service will help out immensely. Again the more items accessed the more items the library is allotted. This practice will keep resources in the collection as well as provide more services.

The library is a key service to any community, those that do not have Internet at home, are able to stay connected and informed. Reaching this goal

keeps books on the shelves.

The library welcomes donations of new books and can accept up to 100 each year, which will be added to the shelves.

If you are home and making use of the internet to pass time, surfing cyber space, collecting information you find of interest, taking a trip to the library can also keep you occupied and can fill up your day with worthwhile research. As well, you may come across other information or topics you may find of interest and not only will you enlighten yourself, you will help your local library branch grow its collection.

The library has numerous programs it provides weekly as well as special events on the schedule it hosts each month. You can check online for times and programs or stop in during regular hours.

The library needs progression and by making a trip there, you will be participating in making your community stronger and more attractive to growth.

Visitor with Bud Phenix on Feb. 13 was his oldtime friend Grant Overkersh from Weyburn.

The Valentine’s Day special at 361 Café was a big success with a full house enjoying the very delicious supper of either Baby Back Ribs or Oscar Chicken. A great job Lori and staff – can’t wait until the next one.

Hope everyone had a super great Valentine’s Day. Also hope that the Family Day long weekend on Monday, Feb. 17 was to your liking and that the week-long break from school will be just what you ordered to help break up this winter – enjoy! Everyone and everything will be back to originality this Monday, February 24.

Visitors with Daryl, Cheryl and Thomas Harrison for a few days over the Family Day long weekend were her mother Sharon Bauche (Regina), her brother, Wayne and Judy Bauche (Calgary), and her daughter Claire Alexander (Swift Current).

On Feb. 15 there were many family members and friends from near and far who gathered at the Alida Memorial Hall for the friendship luncheon, which followed the Funeral Mass at Cantal for Stan Poirier.

Spending a few days holidaying with their Grandparents, Brian and Margaret Peet during the February school break were Claire and Alice Mowchenko of Estevan. They also enjoyed watching their mother Patti and Grandma Margaret curl in the Ladies Bonspiel on Saturday.

Home over the February Winter Break from U of S in Saskatoon with their respective family were Sara McClung who visited her parents Peter and Rozanne McClung and Hayley Bendtsen who visited her parents Steven and Lesa Bendtsen and other family members. Hayley also enjoyed curling with her mother at the Ladies Bonspiel on Feb. 15.

Gail McLachlin and Joe Harvey have returned home after spending a week at Placenicia, Belize.

Gail reports that the weather was beautiful and the Caribbean Sea warm and that it was hard to come

back to -21 degrees.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Dennis and Betty Burnett and family on the passing of his father Jim Burnett at the Carnduff Sunset Haven (formally of Glen Ewen) on Feb. 17 at the age of 89 years. There will be a graveside service at the Glen Ewen Cemetery on May 2. Condolences are also extended to all other family members and friends.

Sincere sympathy and condolences are extended to all members of the Merkley family on the passing of Elizabeth Merkley at Carnduff Sunset Haven (formally of Glen Ewen) on Feb. 20 at the age of 92 years. A graveside will be held at a later date.

Margaret Peet accompanied Parry and Lynette Peet to Regina and spent a couple of days (February 19-21) visiting her mother Claire Germain and sister, Pauline Craggs while Parry and Lynette continued on to Moose Jaw and attended the Scotties Tournament of Hearts to watch the Ladies curling.

Also while there they visited a few moments with her parents Kent and Myrla Holland as well as with her sister Amber Holland.

There were some families who spend a day or two of their February break at Asessippi to enjoy some skiing. Jason, April Junk and family as well as Cheryl and Thomas Harrison spent Feb. 19 skiing.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent Thursday and Friday Feb. 20 and 21 on the slopes before coming home.

There is now some activity at the Alida Community Centre (Archives & Library) with “Moms & Tots” getting together for a couple of hours every second Wednesday morning. They first met on Feb. 19 with four Moms and seven kids being present.

The organizers, Alesha Boettcher and Samantha Peet have decorated up the place and they are also planning on doing all sorts of things, like crafts for all ages and of course socializing while enjoying a cup of coffee. Please note that you are welcome to come (with or without children) and see what’s going on and join in the fun. They are hoping to see

you next time (March 4) or at least sometime soon.

Once again things are going to be busy in Alida coming up soon. There’s one more bonspiel at the rink coming up and it will likely be the last one for this year. Hope we see you there. Also don’t forget to get your supper ticket for the Steak Night as there’s limited seating – it should be fun. See you then.

It’s so nice to see all the familiar faces returning back each week as well as new ones from both near and far. We definitely appreciate your continued support – Come again.

It’s been another great week for watching curling on the television – the Scotties Tournament of Hearts is now over with Team Manitoba defeating Team Ontario Sunday evening. They will now be the new Team Canada – Congratulations to Team MB (Einarson) – see you later at the Worlds. Now beginning on Friday, February 28 it is the Men’s Brier playoffs, so another week of good curling to watch on television. I’m surely on cloud nine and in my glory. Go curlers go and good luck to all.

Novice Cougars (Chris) heading into playoffs Nathan Coffey Sports Contributor The Novice Cougars (Chris) were back on the ice the weekend of Feb. 15 and 16 playing the Estevan Knights and the Estevan Oilers and they came out with two more wins for the standings.

The Big Bad Super Charged Scoring Machine that is the Novice Cougars started the weekend off in Estevan at Affinity Place taking on the Knights. This was a real see saw battle that saw both teams with leads in the first period, and then the defence that was preached and practiced during the week kicked in, and the Cougars pulled out a 9-4 victory.

The boys were a cohesive unit that played with the echoes of Brody “Crash the Crease” Knelsen’s shirt ringing in their ears. It read “You miss 100% of the shots you never take” Wayne Gretzky. Lucky for the Knights they had a goalie, who played very “BrickWall” Brown-ish

and the game stayed close.

I’m sure every Cougar had between 5 and 10 scoring chances, it was a true treat to watch as the puck zipped around the ice from tape to tape.

The Fab 4 kept the Knights in check and also led the Cougars offensively. Timely plays from all nine players on this squad solidified the “Team First” mentality that they go into each game with. Like Helen Keller said, “ Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much.” and she couldn’t be more right.

The second game of the weekend saw the Cougars defending their home ice against the visiting Estevan Oilers and sadly for the Oilers, the Cougars came to play, and I’m sure they could have even steam rolled over the team from Edmonton that shares the Oilers name.

they were playing where the puck was about to be, and not where it was, which made it nearly impossible for the opposition to defend.

The boys played with a nice edge that an best be described by Bobby Clarke, “We take the shortest route to the puck, and arrive iconic humour.”

The 16-2 routing of the Oilers again highlighted team work as everyone was involved and didn’t leave much for the coaching staff to complain about. “A real gritty performance from start to finish,” is all Coach Chris had to say in his post game exclusive interview.

A great weekend took the Cougars to a 7-1 record.

With two more games to round out the regular season the team was back at the rink for the weekend of Feb. 22 and 23.

Saturday the 22nd had the boys lacing up their skates for an early 8:30 start in Estevan where they were taking on the Estevan Flames.

The early start didn’t affect Hayden “Hands and Hair” Puskas as he played possibly his

best and most complete game of the year according to the coaching staff. “Hands and Hair” seems to be playoff ready as he had a great weekend of hockey.

Going into the third period of this early morning match up had the boys down 7-5, and a little down in the dumps.

During the intermission Xander “The Postman” Brown put on his coaching hat and gave the team some great advice, “If we get around the goalie when he comes out too far, then we can score easier.” (I’m paraphrasing) This plus whatever the coaches had to say definitely lit a fire under the boys, as they stormed out for the 3rd and scored 4 unanswered goals to win the game 9-7.

This W showed some real character as the boys pulled off this comeback, while killing off penalties for most of the final frame. Owen “Top Cheese” Light served 13 minutes in the sin bin and Nash “The Flash” Faber served 2.

I assume the penalties can be attributed to the boys getting that playoff feeling coursing threw their veins.

The Carlyle Novice (Chris) Cougars hosted the Oxbow Novice team for their last regular season game on Sunday, Feb. 23. The Cougars have a week off, as they wait for playoff action to begin.

Sunday the 23rd showed the Cougars closing out the regular season at home vs the Oxbow Huskies. The Cougars flew out of the gate and cruised to a convincing 20-0 win.

With his first shutout of the season Nik “The Brickwall” Brown is carrying a 90-minute shutout streak into the playoffs, a perfect time to be playing his best hockey.

“Crash the Crease” and “The Rifle” pressured their opposition into plenty of turnovers, resulting in lots of scoring chances for them and their teammates.

The game also saw Peyton “Scorey Spice” Faber lace them up for the big club again and play alongside and under the watchful eye of big brother “The Flash”, who was going bar down all weekend. Not surprisingly a great weekend of hockey closed out the regular season.

With the team putting up 170 goals and only allowing 56, travelling 1,283 kms to tourneys and away games (Yup, I did the math), and pulling off a tidy 9-1 record, the team can take a well deserved break as they wait for the playoffs to begin and with this break let’s all collectively hope hell doesn’t freeze over, because if it does I know nine young hockey players that would probably head down for a game.

By Linda Wegner I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the matter of individualism.

Two things triggered this introspection, both of which were totally unexpected a few days ago.

The first was an impulse to respond to an invitation to nominate someone for a special treat.

I’d love the prize, not so much for the honour but for the opportunity to travel to share time with a dearly loved group of people. No more details, sorry, and my nomination is confidential.

The second thing that twigged those thoughts has been a nasty bout of spring allergies. Although I still managed to do my daily walks and bus rides, in between sneezing and running nose, I’ve had to relent and spend far more time laying down than usual. In between snoozes I’ve been doing a lot of thinking.

“Hmm,” I’ve found myself repeating to myself, “What really makes a person an individual?

What makes me who I am?” I’ve found joy in the realization that my talents are exactly what I need; those that I don’t have, aren’t required for my role in His plan for my life.

Even before we were formed in our mother’s womb, God distributed specific aptitudes and abilities into our lives.

(Why have some have been born with dis-

abilities? That I cannot answer but I do believe with all my heart that their lives are as valuable as yours or mine.)

The Gospel of Luke records different groups of people coming to Jesus and asking “What shall we do then?” He gave no stock answer but

rather a response to suit the needs of those asking. He still does. God sees and deals with me, according to who I am; and with you, according to who you are.

Stanislas “Stan” Joseph Martin Poirier 1932 - 2020 Stan Poirier passed away at his home near Manor, Sask. on Friday, February 7, 2020 at the age of 87 years.

Stan will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his wife of 62 years, Lucille (née Cruywels); daughter Anita (André) Le Nouail and their children: Jérémie, Sara (Nick) Komarnicki, Eric and Stephen; daughter Jacinthe (Ron) Stokotenly and their daughter Janelle; son Donald; daughter Adeline (Bryon) Wiens and their children: Nigel, Jordan (Linda and their children: Brody, Brynn and Declan) and Riley; son Jerome (Carol) and their children: Nathan (Marie-Laure and their children: Solène, Mélina and Emeric), Brittany (Kourtlin Reddick and their children: Alexine, Alera and Arri), Jaelene (Chase Boettcher and their children: Wyatt, Owen and Karlee), Linden (Eilysh) and Cassandra (Carter) Zander and Seth; son Alain (Tammy) and their children: Catlin, Victoria and Adriana; son Claude (Tory-Dawn) and their daughter Rayanne; daughter Lianne (Maury) Stephensen.

Stan was predeceased by his parents: Ovila and Lucienne; brothers: David (Margaret), Maurice, Jean (Eveline), Lucien, Edouard, Adrien, Percy and Jim; sisters: Adrienne, Marie and Thérèse (Antonio) Boutin; father-in-law Guillaume Cruywels; brothersin-law: Maurice Leclerc, Maurice Chicoine, Richard Keen and Armand Cruywels; nephew Roy Boutin; nieces: Suzette Boutin Fafard and Joanne Soroka.

The Prayer Service was held on Friday, February 14, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Both services were held at St. Raphael R.C. Church, Cantal, Sask. with Rev. Ronald Andree presiding. Following the Funeral Mass, the Rite of Committal took place at the parish cemetery, after which everyone was invited to join the family for a luncheon at the Alida Memorial Hall, Alida, Sask.

By Calvin Daniels Given the lack of Liberal MPs that exist on the Canadian Prairies, and in particular in Alberta and Saskatchewan, it is rather obvious the federal Liberal Party is not particularly popular out this way.

If you go by the political rhetoric of the Premiers of the provinces and if you happen to frequent the world of social media, the Liberals and in particular Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are failing this country in truly massive ways.

Of course that the PM and the Liberals recently won re-election does speak to their general popularity nationally, leaving the aforementioned provinces with a very small voice at the table of government as the region went solidly against the still ruling party.

Some of the disgruntlement is pure sour grapes, Alberta and Saskatchewan having wanted a Conservative government and when that did not unfold there has been something of a political tantrum in response.

But, issues have arisen more recently that suggests the federal government is not only out of touch with the agricultural Prairies, but more concerning nationally is a lack of direction through some trying times.

On the purely agricultural side there continues to be pressure on the federal government to offer farmers some sort of relief surrounding the carbon tax, and how that tax impacted costs this past fall as producers were forced to dry most of the crop due to poor harvest conditions.

The farm sector is of course a small one these days in terms of votes and with Alberta and Saskatchewan already anti-Trudeau at every turn, there is little political incentive to move on grain drying cost relief, but it is a reasonable olive branch to offer if the federal Liberals ever hope to regain even a modicum of support.

An issue with impact across the country, but also hitting farmers, is the continued blockades of rail lines by Indigenous groups.

Some Indigenous groups and their supporters are protesting the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline in British Columbia.

While a number of First Nations band councils have signed agreements in favour of the project, Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs have not accepted the authority of those elected bodies, saying council authority applies only to reserve land and much of the pipeline project is not on a reserve. In solidarity with the hereditary chiefs, supporters and environmental activists have set up blockades at several locations in the country.

This is a minefield for the Liberals. There is an expectation of being allowed to protest in this country. The party has some of its base support within the environmentalist community.

And the relationship between the federal government and Indigenous groups is one that cannot be discounted in a situation like this.

While there are those calling for forced removal of the blockades, even calling for military intervention in needed, negotiation is more the Canadian way. The Oka Crisis in Quebec lasted some 78 days before resolution under a then Conservative government headed by Brian Mulroney.

But this time the disruption is rippling over a far greater area of the country with negative impact on the economy. It needs to be addressed, and Trudeau must be at the forefront. That does not mean he needs to lead the troops, but it does mean finding a way both sides can walk away with a feeling they have accomplished something, but still allows the trains to roll.

It would be another step in the Liberals showing the Prairies we still matter.

Too often in life we are like the student in this story and lack the perception of the master. Instead of the tranquil-it-tea we should be enjoying, we find ourselves in the idiomatic tempest in a teacup. We exaggerate the moment.

Imagine having tea with Jesus. “If only I were holier,” you think.

There is so much you would ask of Jesus in the encounter, if only you were holier. And that is characteristic of our daily lives – there are so many ways we could be like Jesus in this world, if only we were holier.

A storm is raging, and the boat is already being swamped. There is much agitation, but Jesus is sleeping on a cushion.

“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” they ask as they awaken him.

“Peace! Be still!”

Jesus says. (Mark 4:3541). “Have you still no faith?” he asks them.

“Why were you afraid?”

Jesus accepted them and rescued them just as they were. There was no need for their fear; Jesus was near.

Our call to discipleship does not depend on our personal sanctity. Jesus worked with sinners like Peter. God worked with sinners like King David. God accepts us as we are. After all, we are thrust into life’s situations daily in our families, at work or in the community just as we are.

By Ken Rolheiser There is an ancient Asian custom of “Tea Ceremony” where two people gather, reverently greet one another in silence and then one pours the tea ever so slowly as if to drink in each other’s spirit first.

Then they quietly enter conversation.

There was once a student seeking wisdom from a master. They sat down, bowed, and the master started the tea ceremony; he slowly mixed the tea, letting it draw, then slowly started pouring the tea into the cup.

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • We had an individual warned about calling 911. They thought they could use 911 to inquire with the Police as to how to find a phone number for a business. Another mistaken call to 911 resulted in the caller being extremely apologetic and embarrassed.

• We also had false alarms, a variety of mental health and child welfare calls as well as files associated to assisting other Provincial agencies and Police agencies.

• An individual reported themselves for having fraudulently cashed the same cheque twice. This had already been dealt with by the bank and due to the lack of intent it is not Criminal. It sure is rewarding to deal with people who are so honest and want to confess to offences that are not truly offences.

• We received a Crime Stoppers tip, however, by the time the tip was called in, transcribed and sent to us the alleged offence had already transpired.

Please don’t be afraid to call us. We can let you remain anonymous.

• Another call with a 1.5 hr time delay was also found to be less than valuable being when we made patrols we knew the alleged offender was long gone. We did try, but 1.5 hrs is a long time.

• Our volunteer firefighters attended and put out a vehicle fire.

Nothing suspicious and we sure appreciated their quick response.

• A funny thing happened the other day, however, some times it is not appropriate for us to share everything. Let us just say watch some video’s on social media that relate to individuals that have had medical procedures and are having some difficulty with reality due to the medication they are on.

• If you have an abandoned farm site or have family that has an abandoned farm site you might want to take the odd trip out to check on it. Recently an individual did so and found that some of their property stored in a building was stolen. They also discovered a truck stolen out of Alberta. Our Forensic Identification Section assisted with our investigation, however, we were unable to locate any evidence to link anyone to either incident. We are not sure how long the truck was there, however, we know it was stolen over

a month before it was found.

• My colleague in Moosomin, the famous, or is it infamous Sgt. Fefchak had some more good advice that I have borrowed and modified slightly.

• Be warned there are many fraudsters out there trying to get your money. You may get a call from an individual where the call display shows RCMP on the display or our phone number. This individual may suggest that you have used your social insurance number or bank account for money laundering. You may then get another call claiming that the RCMP or Police will be arresting you or issuing a warrant for your arrest. The individual will then try and get you to give them your SIN, or birthday, or banking info. I have been a Police Officer for almost 30 years and have NEVER had any reason to ask someone for their social security number or banking information. Please don’t give anyone your personal information over the phone ever, and we mean ever. Hang up!, then carry on with your day. If you are concerned call your local RCMP Detachment or bank for assistance, or if you are concerned about using the phone drop by and talk to us or your bank.

• Due to a call from the public we were able to arrest an impaired driver in October. This individual finally dealt with their charges last week and the accused now has to pay a $600 fine and $180 victim fine surcharge for driving while prohibited and a further $2,000 fine and $600 victim fine surcharge for the impaired driving offence. They avoided having to pay the ticket for the use of the cell phone, however, did have to pay $360 for having open liquor in the vehicle. All and all a good day for society.

Hopefully this individual has learned their lesson.

• We are investigating an assault involving two individuals that had previously been in a relationship. We have an obligation to investigate and lay charges if the evidence is present, even when the victim chooses not to cooperate. This is to protect victims and from my experience it is often the only way to protect victims of domestic violence.

• If someone you know blocks your phone number on their phone you so that you can not call them would be a hint that you should not call them. If this individual gets a new phone number and your relationship status has

not changed I would assume you might not want to call the former acquaintance on their new phone. Well one individual chose to do so and after a warning from the Police we hope to have resolved the issue.

• A home owner called to advise they had been made aware there were several intoxicated individuals at their residence and there was a concern how long they would continue getting along. A patrol was made and those that were not welcome left and it appears all concerns were alleviated.

• If you can’t get your vehicle started and you are in a parking lot and you think you need a boost there is a towing service that can assist with that. If you call the Police we may attend but the chances of us assisting for liability reasons is limited. That said, if you are going to call the Police you should ensure you have a valid licence, which this individual did, and valid registration which this individual did not.

No charges were laid, however, the vehicle was quickly registered before it entered a roadway.

• We just don’t understand why people keep getting behind the wheel, but they do. An individual was charged with impaired driving related offences after a injury collision on a snowmobile. Samples of 110 and 100 mg% were obtained. Another individual was charged for impaired driving after providing samples of 100 mg%. Members also issued a 72-hour suspension.

• An individual has allegedly been flicking their bright lights and honking their horn when passing certain vehicles.

We are hoping that with the warning provided by the Police this will stop.

If not we are more than willing to issue tickets.

• If your driving abstract is poor and you get pulled over for speeding, don’t blame the Police Officer and don’t beg for a warning.

It is not our fault you can’t seem to drive in a safe and respectful manner. The following are some of the comments I have heard, “I am going to have your job”, “I am going to lodge a complaint”, “You are going to regret ever meeting me”, “You don’t know how to do your job”, “Anyone could do your job”, “Why are you not catching real criminals?” and “Don’t you have anything better to do?”

• Members issued approximately 25 tickets and 65 warnings over the past week.

• Tickets were is-

sued for fail to stop at stop sign - $230, inadequate windshield - $115, operate unregistered snowmobile - $100, operate a commercial vehicle contrary to the hours of service regulations $150, no drivers licence -$150, Fail to display licence plate -$100, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, exceed 60 km/hr when passing an emergency vehicle - $310, and most expensive speeding tickets were for $306, and $776.

• Warnings were issued for fail to stop at a stop sign, insecure load, inadequate headlamps, fail to produce drivers licence, inadequate tires, fail to produce registration, obstructed licence plate, inadequate mudflaps, hold more than one copy of a licence, fail to produce drivers licence, fail to display licence plate, no drivers licence, fail to maintain a daily log book, fail to display temporary registration permit, and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate tail lights, inadequate windshield, inadequate headlights, inadequate day time driving lights, inadequate licence plate lights, transfer an out of Province drivers licence, obtain a valid licence, inadequate speedometer, inadequate muffler or exhaust, and illegal tint.

Rail blockades must end

By Murray Mandryk There is a bottom line to the railway blockades and the other illegal protests across the country in support of the Wet’suwet’en fight against the Coastal GasLink project.

Illegal protests have to stop.

Arrests would be unfortunate and perhaps counterproductive because such confrontation only heighten tensions between First Nations/environmentalists and others. This could add to the difficulty of finding long-term solutions.

But this may be the necessary reality.

The biggest problem in our nation right now is we’re really not bothering to listen to each other. Or, worse yet, about the only thing we seem capable of hearing is the slights each side directs at the other.

Consider the comment made by Conservative leader Andrew Scheer that First Nations and other protestors need to “park their privilege” in these protests.

It was an odd thing to come from a high-ranking politician who enjoys considerable privilege, free residency by virtue of his position, being just one of them. It’s especially odd coming from Scheer, whose ousting from his party leadership has had a lot to do with a previously undisclosed arrangement in which party donors wound up paying for the private schooling of his children.

But this has little to do with laws being broken during these protests, something that’s clearly unacceptable. You can be someone with fierce environmental concerns or someone of First Nations heritage with strong views on past and present wrongs, but that doesn’t given you the right to break the law.

And even if Scheer’s remarks were unhelpful, should they have “disqualified” Scheer from being invited

by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to a joint federal leaders’ meeting to discuss possible resolutions to the protests and blockades?

In this minority Parliament that Trudeau said should be all about the “need to ensure that we are also listening to each other” wouldn’t it have been been appropriate to include all points of view?

Wouldn’t that include Scheer’s view that does include the notion that the majority of elected and even some hereditary Wet’suwet’en chiefs sosupport this natural gas pipeline?

Ultimately, all of us in a democracy must not only live by majority rule, but also the rule of law.

You can’t break the law just to get your own way. And this is not a situation, as Assembly of First Nations Grand Chief Perry Bellegarde put it, about criminalizing what’s otherwise a political protest.

The law is the law.

But all this said, there’s always two sides to every story. It’s really easy to criticize those who break the law and maybe even easier to do so when those breaking the law seem intent on justifying why they are doing so.

Less easy understanding why First Nation and other protestors are so adament in their oppositon.

Sure, some of is purely driven by one’s philosophical worldview and that isn’t always a foundation for rational logical or deep understanding of issues in play.

Chants of “you can’t drink oil; keep it in the soil” during a recent downtown Toronto protest in support of Wet’suwet’en pipeline opposition seemed to badly miss the fact that this is a natural gas pipeline that could, arguably contriibute to greenhouse gas reduction.

However, what also might not be well understood is that the Wet’suwet’en First Nations did not sign treaties and their traditions do provide a legitimate role for hereditary chiefs in this debate.

Similarly, complaints that Coastal GasLink put undue pressure on elected chiefs to agree to this pipeline route when alternative routes might have been available further complicate matters.

But regardless of how legitimate the grievance may very well be, you aren’t doing to find the solutions in illegal protests that are sometimes thousands of miles away.

It makes no sense. A country cannot function this way.

Just another hero . . . or not A familiar adage cautions us to never meet our heroes lest we discover they have feet of clay.

The danger is that we find out just how ordinary and fallible they might be. In not living up to our perceptions of them, we could end up disappointed or deflated.

They’re not who we thought they were--or perhaps they’re not who we built them up to be.

Shelley Luedtke In any number of settings from educational to social, we are asked to think about the people we would most like to meet if given the opportunity. One of the most common is: which historical figure would you most like to have dinner with? Our answers might change over time as our interests and experiences change.

My list has included a king, a philosopher, a writer, and a 18th century composer, yet even as I recall these, several others come to mind that I would add today.

Narrowing the question might be fun. Which celebrity would you most like to spend a day with in New York City? Which of your ancestors would you choose if you could ask three questions of them?

Who would top the list of world leaders you would like to share a conversation with? Yet as interesting as any of these ventures might be, there would be part of me that would be reticent, too. Not so much feeling leery of meeting a hero, but of questioning my own definition of the label.

What if the people I should really want to meet are ones I know little about. It’s not so much a caution against meeting our heroes, but instead examining who our heroes are.

There are business people, venture capitalists, innovators, and celebrities who are generous in their resources toward fighting poverty, isolation and homelessness. We can be grateful for their philanthropic efforts. But last winter I met a man who was a powerful example of what giving can look like without that kind of money. Tony grew up in misera-

ble conditions in a country where his ethnicity led to discrimination and abuse. Nothing about his life was easy, nor was education attainable. But Tony came through all of that with the most amazing heart and compassion for others. He and his wife live simply so that they can help as many others as they can.

They are making a huge difference in their community in Eastern Europe and changing lives each and every day. They don’t have access to the resources others have, but what they are accomplishing out of their lack, is remarkable.

Robbie, an eight-year-old boy in Florida, entered a loving adoptive home after spending difficult years dealing with abuse that led to two hospitalizations. Unable to express emotion in a manner familiar to most of us, it was after the death of the family dog in his new home that he was finally able to cry.

He loves visiting animal shelters and is said to seek out the “oldest, mangiest, least adoptable mutt of the lot”, and is determined to care for as many as his family with allow. His other dream is to one day become a foster parent. Drawing on his experience of feeling that people “only want babies and puppies” he is determined to love those that sometimes go unseen.

The greatest gestures may not be the biggest, nor the biggest heroes amongst those who are considered the greatest. But they are likely the people we would be best served to meet. Or, perhaps more precisely, to recognize we may have already met them. The problem is they may have gone unnoticed because they are the first to shrug off the label. They believe they are simply doing what any of us should: look after one another.

Redefining who our heroes are will open the floodgates, and our eyes, to the many all around us. The great thing is there’s little risk in meeting them because we already know who they are. Let’s just make sure we seize opportunities to invite them for dinner, ask some questions and share a conversation. Yes, they have feet of clay. It’s what ensures they keep their feet on solid ground.

That’s my outlook.

New research suggests that getting quality sleep may be even more important than once realized. In particular, sleep disruptions could impact the way the brain functions. Here’s what’s been uncovered.

Toxic proteins The presence of amyloid beta plaques in the brain is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Normally, the brain’s glymphatic system uses cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to remove these proteins and other waste products. But if these proteins accumulate in the brain, they can destroy healthy neurons, thereby causing various symptoms.

The proper functioning of the glymphatic system,

however, heavily depends on the quality of sleep.

Sleep and aging The glymphatic system functions best during deep non-REM sleep, which is the stage of sleep that typically becomes shorter as we age. Thus, scientists suspect that age-related changes in sleep play an important role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

A new avenue for prevention The connection between aging, sleep changes and Alzheimer’s disease is well established. However, the new research suggests that working to improve sleep quality in at-risk populations could be a promis-

ing avenue for prevention.

Improving your sleep This new information reinforces the idea that maintaining good sleeping habits is crucial to your long-term health.

The Book Club at the Wawota Library met last Monday at the Village Inn. They discussed the latest book, “Beartown”

by Fredrik Backman. It is a story about a small town that is slowly dying and their great hope of revival is the upcoming hockey game that their local team in the national semi-finals. A win would put Beartown on the map and bring some needed industries to the town. All their hopes are placed on the shoulders of these 17-yearolds. When a crime is committed most of the town want to ignore it and everyone is picking

sides. It was very true as to what happens in real life.

Wawota would like to welcome Paul Wipf to Wawota. He is from Saskatoon and has purchased Florence Hutchison’s home on Lonsadale.

Also a welcome to John Trinidad, who came to Wawota last November from the Philippines. He is Jordan’s brother and works at Moose Mountain Meats.

We look forward meeting his wife and daughter when they join him here.

The Time and Talent Committee met at

the church last Sunday to check on the progress of the plans for the event on Mar. 15. Donations have been slow in coming in but usually pick up closer to the event.

The Keith Olsons had their granddaughters spent several days with them during spring break. Sarah and Kate Heffernan from Regina were here as their mother, Stacey and Carey Lamoureaux travelled to St. Albert to visit Cindy Olson and Dan, and Morgan. (They missed Emma Buhr as she was on a holiday to Mexico).

Changes coming to Southeast Regional Library in Carlyle

By Kelly Johnson The Observer If you regularly visit or just occasionally stop in at the Carlyle Library, you will be seeing changes.

The library is going to have a renovation coming this spring, which will see a new layout, a reconfiguration of technology and new flooring.

A library is important to a community and is a goal-orientated service, which requires ongoing planning and programs to keep it successful.

The renovations with the renewed floor plan will make it easier for patrons to find books and items and streamline all services it provides.

The goal this year, which is vital to providinga quality experience for those using the library, is to reach 6,000 checkouts of items available at the library. These items include books, DVD’s, E-books, audios, kits and video games.

The importance of this goal is the library functions under a process that determines its resources by how many items are borrowed. If an item does not get loaned out over a period of time then it is removed from the libraries collection.

If you are at the library checking out a certain topic, take the time to see what else is of interest to you and borrow whatever you would like more information on.

Library cards are free, as well there is no charge to borrow, the more items you borrow the more resource materials the library is provided. This practice if adopted by those using the service will help out immensely. Again the more items accessed the more items the library is allotted. This practice will keep resources in the collection as well as provide more services.

The library is a key service to any community, those that do not have Internet at home, are able to stay connected and informed. Reaching this goal

keeps books on the shelves.

The library welcomes donations of new books and can accept up to 100 each year, which will be added to the shelves.

If you are home and making use of the internet to pass time, surfing cyber space, collecting information you find of interest, taking a trip to the library can also keep you occupied and can fill up your day with worthwhile research. As well, you may come across other information or topics you may find of interest and not only will you enlighten yourself, you will help your local library branch grow its collection.

The library has numerous programs it provides weekly as well as special events on the schedule it hosts each month. You can check online for times and programs or stop in during regular hours.

The library needs progression and by making a trip there, you will be participating in making your community stronger and more attractive to growth.

Visitor with Bud Phenix on Feb. 13 was his oldtime friend Grant Overkersh from Weyburn.

The Valentine’s Day special at 361 Café was a big success with a full house enjoying the very delicious supper of either Baby Back Ribs or Oscar Chicken. A great job Lori and staff – can’t wait until the next one.

Hope everyone had a super great Valentine’s Day. Also hope that the Family Day long weekend on Monday, Feb. 17 was to your liking and that the week-long break from school will be just what you ordered to help break up this winter – enjoy! Everyone and everything will be back to originality this Monday, February 24.

Visitors with Daryl, Cheryl and Thomas Harrison for a few days over the Family Day long weekend were her mother Sharon Bauche (Regina), her brother, Wayne and Judy Bauche (Calgary), and her daughter Claire Alexander (Swift Current).

On Feb. 15 there were many family members and friends from near and far who gathered at the Alida Memorial Hall for the friendship luncheon, which followed the Funeral Mass at Cantal for Stan Poirier.

Spending a few days holidaying with their Grandparents, Brian and Margaret Peet during the February school break were Claire and Alice Mowchenko of Estevan. They also enjoyed watching their mother Patti and Grandma Margaret curl in the Ladies Bonspiel on Saturday.

Home over the February Winter Break from U of S in Saskatoon with their respective family were Sara McClung who visited her parents Peter and Rozanne McClung and Hayley Bendtsen who visited her parents Steven and Lesa Bendtsen and other family members. Hayley also enjoyed curling with her mother at the Ladies Bonspiel on Feb. 15.

Gail McLachlin and Joe Harvey have returned home after spending a week at Placenicia, Belize.

Gail reports that the weather was beautiful and the Caribbean Sea warm and that it was hard to come

back to -21 degrees.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Dennis and Betty Burnett and family on the passing of his father Jim Burnett at the Carnduff Sunset Haven (formally of Glen Ewen) on Feb. 17 at the age of 89 years. There will be a graveside service at the Glen Ewen Cemetery on May 2. Condolences are also extended to all other family members and friends.

Sincere sympathy and condolences are extended to all members of the Merkley family on the passing of Elizabeth Merkley at Carnduff Sunset Haven (formally of Glen Ewen) on Feb. 20 at the age of 92 years. A graveside will be held at a later date.

Margaret Peet accompanied Parry and Lynette Peet to Regina and spent a couple of days (February 19-21) visiting her mother Claire Germain and sister, Pauline Craggs while Parry and Lynette continued on to Moose Jaw and attended the Scotties Tournament of Hearts to watch the Ladies curling.

Also while there they visited a few moments with her parents Kent and Myrla Holland as well as with her sister Amber Holland.

There were some families who spend a day or two of their February break at Asessippi to enjoy some skiing. Jason, April Junk and family as well as Cheryl and Thomas Harrison spent Feb. 19 skiing.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent Thursday and Friday Feb. 20 and 21 on the slopes before coming home.

There is now some activity at the Alida Community Centre (Archives & Library) with “Moms & Tots” getting together for a couple of hours every second Wednesday morning. They first met on Feb. 19 with four Moms and seven kids being present.

The organizers, Alesha Boettcher and Samantha Peet have decorated up the place and they are also planning on doing all sorts of things, like crafts for all ages and of course socializing while enjoying a cup of coffee. Please note that you are welcome to come (with or without children) and see what’s going on and join in the fun. They are hoping to see

you next time (March 4) or at least sometime soon.

Once again things are going to be busy in Alida coming up soon. There’s one more bonspiel at the rink coming up and it will likely be the last one for this year. Hope we see you there. Also don’t forget to get your supper ticket for the Steak Night as there’s limited seating – it should be fun. See you then.

Sunday Breakfast on Feb. 16 had Kitchen Group # 4 serving up 40 breakfasts – Way to go Guys and Gals, another successful morning. Then on Sunday, February 23 Breakfast had Kitchen Group # 1 serving up 30 breakfasts – Way to go Guys and Gals, another successful morning. It’s so nice to see all the familiar faces returning back each week as well as new ones from both near and far. We definitely appreciate your continued support – Come again.

Please take note that there are only five more Breakfasts at the Rink. Starting next week the countdown begins on Mar. 1 – will see Kitchen Group # 2 back at the helm again. See you at the rink.

It’s been another great week for watching curling on the television – the Scotties Tournament of Hearts is now over with Team Manitoba defeating Team Ontario Sunday evening. They will now be the new Team Canada – Congratulations to Team MB (Einarson) – see you later at the Worlds. Now beginning on Friday, February 28 it is the Men’s Brier playoffs, so another week of good curling to watch on television. I’m surely on cloud nine and in my glory. Go curlers go and good luck to all.

Novice Cougars (Chris) heading into playoffs Nathan Coffey Sports Contributor The Novice Cougars (Chris) were back on the ice the weekend of Feb. 15 and 16 playing the Estevan Knights and the Estevan Oilers and they came out with two more wins for the standings.

The Big Bad Super Charged Scoring Machine that is the Novice Cougars started the weekend off in Estevan at Affinity Place taking on the Knights. This was a real see saw battle that saw both teams with leads in the first period, and then the defence that was preached and practiced during the week kicked in, and the Cougars pulled out a 9-4 victory.

The boys were a cohesive unit that played with the echoes of Brody “Crash the Crease” Knelsen’s shirt ringing in their ears. It read “You miss 100% of the shots you never take” Wayne Gretzky. Lucky for the Knights they had a goalie, who played very “BrickWall” Brown-ish

and the game stayed close.

I’m sure every Cougar had between 5 and 10 scoring chances, it was a true treat to watch as the puck zipped around the ice from tape to tape.

The Fab 4 kept the Knights in check and also led the Cougars offensively. Timely plays from all nine players on this squad solidified the “Team First” mentality that they go into each game with. Like Helen Keller said, “ Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much.” and she couldn’t be more right.

The second game of the weekend saw the Cougars defending their home ice against the visiting Estevan Oilers and sadly for the Oilers, the Cougars came to play, and I’m sure they could have even steam rolled over the team from Edmonton that shares the Oilers name.

The boys flew out to an early lead and never looked back, like time travellers, it seemed like

they were playing where the puck was about to be, and not where it was, which made it nearly impossible for the opposition to defend.

The boys played with a nice edge that an best be described by Bobby Clarke, “We take the shortest route to the puck, and arrive iconic humour.”

The 16-2 routing of the Oilers again highlighted team work as everyone was involved and didn’t leave much for the coaching staff to complain about. “A real gritty performance from start to finish,” is all Coach Chris had to say in his post game exclusive interview.

A great weekend took the Cougars to a 7-1 record.

With two more games to round out the regular season the team was back at the rink for the weekend of Feb. 22 and 23.

Saturday the 22nd had the boys lacing up their skates for an early 8:30 start in Estevan where they were taking on the Estevan Flames.

The early start didn’t affect Hayden “Hands and Hair” Puskas as he played possibly his

best and most complete game of the year according to the coaching staff. “Hands and Hair” seems to be playoff ready as he had a great weekend of hockey.

Going into the third period of this early morning match up had the boys down 7-5, and a little down in the dumps.

During the intermission Xander “The Postman” Brown put on his coaching hat and gave the team some great advice, “If we get around the goalie when he comes out too far, then we can score easier.” (I’m paraphrasing) This plus whatever the coaches had to say definitely lit a fire under the boys, as they stormed out for the 3rd and scored 4 unanswered goals to win the game 9-7.

This W showed some real character as the boys pulled off this comeback, while killing off penalties for most of the final frame. Owen “Top Cheese” Light served 13 minutes in the sin bin and Nash “The Flash” Faber served 2.

I assume the penalties can be attributed to the boys getting that playoff feeling coursing threw their veins.

The Carlyle Novice (Chris) Cougars hosted the Oxbow Novice team for their last regular season game on Sunday, Feb. 23. The Cougars have a week off, as they wait for playoff action to begin.

Sunday the 23rd showed the Cougars closing out the regular season at home vs the Oxbow Huskies. The Cougars flew out of the gate and cruised to a convincing 20-0 win.

With his first shutout of the season Nik “The Brickwall” Brown is carrying a 90-minute shutout streak into the playoffs, a perfect time to be playing his best hockey.

“Crash the Crease” and “The Rifle” pressured their opposition into plenty of turnovers, resulting in lots of scoring chances for them and their teammates.

The game also saw Peyton “Scorey Spice” Faber lace them up for the big club again and play alongside and under the watchful eye of big brother “The Flash”, who was going bar down all weekend. Not surprisingly a great weekend of hockey closed out the regular season.

With the team putting up 170 goals and only allowing 56, travelling 1,283 kms to tourneys and away games (Yup, I did the math), and pulling off a tidy 9-1 record, the team can take a well deserved break as they wait for the playoffs to begin and with this break let’s all collectively hope hell doesn’t freeze over, because if it does I know nine young hockey players that would probably head down for a game.

By Linda Wegner I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the matter of individualism.

Two things triggered this introspection, both of which were totally unexpected a few days ago.

The first was an impulse to respond to an invitation to nominate someone for a special treat.

I’d love the prize, not so much for the honour but for the opportunity to travel to share time with a dearly loved group of people. No more details, sorry, and my nomination is confidential.

The second thing that twigged those thoughts has been a nasty bout of spring allergies. Although I still managed to do my daily walks and bus rides, in between sneezing and running nose, I’ve had to relent and spend far more time laying down than usual. In between snoozes I’ve been doing a lot of thinking.

“Hmm,” I’ve found myself repeating to myself, “What really makes a person an individual?

What makes me who I am?” I’ve found joy in the realization that my talents are exactly what I need; those that I don’t have, aren’t required for my role in His plan for my life.

Even before we were formed in our mother’s womb, God distributed specific aptitudes and abilities into our lives.

(Why have some have been born with dis-

abilities? That I cannot answer but I do believe with all my heart that their lives are as valuable as yours or mine.)

The Gospel of Luke records different groups of people coming to Jesus and asking “What shall we do then?” He gave no stock answer but

rather a response to suit the needs of those asking. He still does. God sees and deals with me, according to who I am; and with you, according to who you are.

Stanislas “Stan” Joseph Martin Poirier 1932 - 2020 Stan Poirier passed away at his home near Manor, Sask. on Friday, February 7, 2020 at the age of 87 years.

Stan will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his wife of 62 years, Lucille (née Cruywels); daughter Anita (André) Le Nouail and their children: Jérémie, Sara (Nick) Komarnicki, Eric and Stephen; daughter Jacinthe (Ron) Stokotenly and their daughter Janelle; son Donald; daughter Adeline (Bryon) Wiens and their children: Nigel, Jordan (Linda and their children: Brody, Brynn and Declan) and Riley; son Jerome (Carol) and their children: Nathan (Marie-Laure and their children: Solène, Mélina and Emeric), Brittany (Kourtlin Reddick and their children: Alexine, Alera and Arri), Jaelene (Chase Boettcher and their children: Wyatt, Owen and Karlee), Linden (Eilysh) and Cassandra (Carter) Zander and Seth; son Alain (Tammy) and their children: Catlin, Victoria and Adriana; son Claude (Tory-Dawn) and their daughter Rayanne; daughter Lianne (Maury) Stephensen.

He will be lovingly remembered by his mother-inlaw Regina Cruywels and siblings: Cécile Chicoine, Elizabeth Leclerc, Rita (Bob) Olyarnyk, Bernadette (Lucien) Kenler and Antoinette (Don) Andersen; step brother Germain (Dolores) Brisbois.

Also left with memories of Stan are his sisters-inlaw and brothers-in-law: Ghislaine Poirier, Lawrence (Odette) Cruywels, Marilyn (Alfred) Blerot, Meryle Cruywels and Denis (Cindy) Cruywels, and many nieces and nephews.

Stan was predeceased by his parents: Ovila and Lucienne; brothers: David (Margaret), Maurice, Jean (Eveline), Lucien, Edouard, Adrien, Percy and Jim; sisters: Adrienne, Marie and Thérèse (Antonio) Boutin; father-in-law Guillaume Cruywels; brothersin-law: Maurice Leclerc, Maurice Chicoine, Richard Keen and Armand Cruywels; nephew Roy Boutin; nieces: Suzette Boutin Fafard and Joanne Soroka.

The Prayer Service was held on Friday, February 14, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Both services were held at St. Raphael R.C. Church, Cantal, Sask. with Rev. Ronald Andree presiding. Following the Funeral Mass, the Rite of Committal took place at the parish cemetery, after which everyone was invited to join the family for a luncheon at the Alida Memorial Hall, Alida, Sask.

THE OBSERVER Feds out of touch with the agricultural Prairies

By Calvin Daniels Given the lack of Liberal MPs that exist on the Canadian Prairies, and in particular in Alberta and Saskatchewan, it is rather obvious the federal Liberal Party is not particularly popular out this way.

If you go by the political rhetoric of the Premiers of the provinces and if you happen to frequent the world of social media, the Liberals and in particular Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are failing this country in truly massive ways.

Of course that the PM and the Liberals recently won re-election does speak to their general popularity nationally, leaving the aforementioned provinces with a very small voice at the table of government as the region went solidly against the still ruling party.

Some of the disgruntlement is pure sour grapes, Alberta and Saskatchewan having wanted a Conservative government and when that did not unfold there has been something of a political tantrum in response.

But, issues have arisen more recently that suggests the federal government is not only out of touch with the agricultural Prairies, but more concerning nationally is a lack of direction through some trying times.

On the purely agricultural side there continues to be pressure on the federal government to offer farmers some sort of relief surrounding the carbon tax, and how that tax impacted costs this past fall as producers were forced to dry most of the crop due to poor harvest conditions.

The farm sector is of course a small one these days in terms of votes and with Alberta and Saskatchewan already anti-Trudeau at every turn, there is little political incentive to move on grain drying cost relief, but it is a reasonable olive branch to offer if the federal Liberals ever hope to regain even a modicum of support.

An issue with impact across the country, but also hitting farmers, is the continued blockades of rail lines by Indigenous groups.

Some Indigenous groups and their supporters are protesting the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline in British Columbia.

While a number of First Nations band councils have signed agreements in favour of the project, Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs have not accepted the authority of those elected bodies, saying council authority applies only to reserve land and much of the pipeline project is not on a reserve. In solidarity with the hereditary chiefs, supporters and environmental activists have set up blockades at several locations in the country.

This is a minefield for the Liberals. There is an expectation of being allowed to protest in this country. The party has some of its base support within the environmentalist community.

And the relationship between the federal government and Indigenous groups is one that cannot be discounted in a situation like this.

While there are those calling for forced removal of the blockades, even calling for military intervention in needed, negotiation is more the Canadian way. The Oka Crisis in Quebec lasted some 78 days before resolution under a then Conservative government headed by Brian Mulroney.

But this time the disruption is rippling over a far greater area of the country with negative impact on the economy. It needs to be addressed, and Trudeau must be at the forefront. That does not mean he needs to lead the troops, but it does mean finding a way both sides can walk away with a feeling they have accomplished something, but still allows the trains to roll.

It would be another step in the Liberals showing the Prairies we still matter.

The student couldn’t take it anymore and eventually said, “Master, the cup is full. It cannot take any more tea.” The master put down the teapot and looked at the student and said, “So too are you. And until you empty yourself you can receive no wisdom.”

Too often in life we are like the student in this story and lack the perception of the master. Instead of the tranquil-it-tea we should be enjoying, we find ourselves in the idiomatic tempest in a teacup. We exaggerate the moment.

Imagine having tea with Jesus. “If only I were holier,” you think.

There is so much you would ask of Jesus in the encounter, if only you were holier. And that is characteristic of our daily lives – there are so many ways we could be like Jesus in this world, if only we were holier.

A storm is raging, and the boat is already being swamped. There is much agitation, but Jesus is sleeping on a cushion.

“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” they ask as they awaken him.

“Peace! Be still!”

Jesus says. (Mark 4:3541). “Have you still no faith?” he asks them.

“Why were you afraid?”

Jesus accepted them and rescued them just as they were. There was no need for their fear; Jesus was near.

Our call to discipleship does not depend on our personal sanctity. Jesus worked with sinners like Peter. God worked with sinners like King David. God accepts us as we are. After all, we are thrust into life’s situations daily in our families, at work or in the community just as we are.

By Ken Rolheiser There is an ancient Asian custom of “Tea Ceremony” where two people gather, reverently greet one another in silence and then one pours the tea ever so slowly as if to drink in each other’s spirit first.

Then they quietly enter conversation.

There was once a student seeking wisdom from a master. They sat down, bowed, and the master started the tea ceremony; he slowly mixed the tea, letting it draw, then slowly started pouring the tea into the cup.

As he did so, the cup filled to the brim and started to overflow. The student was disturbed and looked at the master; anxiously waiting for the master to stop pouring but he continued to pour. He poured, overflowing the cup, now over the saucer, and spilling over onto

Of note, Ward Cutler is again the auction-

eer and this will be Cutler’s 25th appearance in this capacity.

Wayne Wilson is once again the chairman of the fundraiser.

It is a total team effort by the Lions to stage this event, raising funds for community projects in the area. The auction raises $30,000 or more

each year for worthy causes.

This year the auction will include three NHL jerseys, two of which will be signed by hometown brother, Cale and Hayden Fleury, as well as a Winnipeg Jets jersey signed by the entire team.
