Redvers Arts Council presents Kelly J Gill and the Hired Guns found and started playing his mother’s 12 button accordion.

From there he learned to play the piano and guitar. All this talent has led up to the present where he is writing and performing his own songs.

Kelly formed the band ‘The Prairie Travellers’ and played with them for 18 years across the southern prairies.

Added to his busy schedule with the band, he held down two daytime jobs – cattle ranching and battery operating.

After leaving the Prairie Travellers, Kelly embarked on a solo career in Nashville. His first solo album ‘One More Mile’ was recorded in Nashville and won the award for “Best Country

Album” sponsored by Akademia Music in Los Angeles, California. His song ‘The Stranger’ went to #1 on KMIX, a country music radio station in L.A. His song ‘Another 26 Oz Illusion’ is also climbing the charts in L.A. The Redvers Arts Council is pleased to present this talented Saskatchewan musician to our community. Information technology important to farmers

By Calvin Daniels A recent survey by Farm Credit Canada (FCC) regarding agriculture information technology has revealed results that most would have anticipated before checking the boxes on a survey form.

Farmers have traditionally been quick adopters of technology from the time of the first steel plows, through to the arrival of tractors replacing horses, to zero-till farming, and the use of global positioning systems.

Information technology is no different in terms of its usage on the farm. It is just another tool to help producers be more productive and more profitable.

But, there is an issue tied to information technology that is not tied to deciding on a new seed variety, or an air seeder with some innovative technology new to the industry. The difference is what the information gathered on an individual farm might be used for off that farm, and by whom.

In a release FCC noted its “Vision Panel survey shows 25 per cent of the more than

2,000 Canadian farmers questioned have become less comfortable sharing data with outside organizations – such as suppliers – over the past two years, while 58 per cent say their comfort level hasn’t changed.”

So it’s not surprising the survey also showed “71 per cent of those surveyed said data treatment is “very” or “extremely” important when selecting an agriculture technology provider.”

“There is no doubt that privacy protection and control over where and how farm data is used is a top-of-mind issue for a majority of producers,” said Fred Wall, FCC marketing vicepresident in the release.

Again, this can’t be seen as a huge surprise by the industry.

A producer can be accepting of the huge impact large mega national corporations have in terms of supporting agriculture on a large number of fronts, but some caution in terms of how a person’s specific farm data is used has to be in the back of many producers’ minds.

“At the same time, most see the benefits of using technology to im-

prove their operations, reduce paperwork and help them make better decisions in a growing and dynamic industry,” said Wall.

In fact, 69 per cent of those surveyed believe technology can increase efficiency, lower costs and result in better yields, while 65 per cent believe it can improve management control and decision-making, noted the release.

What the results indicate is a desire by producers to be aware of just how data collected on their farm might be disseminated and utilized beyond making specific decisions on their farms.

That is a challenge for the information technology sector as once something is digitized and send out into the world tracking it can obviously be challenging.

Of course some of the onus falls to producers too to make wise decisions when choosing software and service providers.

There is undoubtedly much to learn in terms of accumulated data from a variety of on-farm sources, but controls are also clearly needed to endure privacy and personal knowledge retention.

Moe manages to keep municipalities happy

By Murray Mandryk Think back about a dozen years ago when we were in the middle of a pre-election fight over education property tax on farmland.

Then premier Lorne Calvert vowed to remove it … although his NDP government never quite got around to doing it. Instead, his NDP government’s focus in its 2007 budget was free prescription drugs for seniors. The NDP were clobbered in rural seats and lost power to Brad Wall and the Saskatchewan Party.

It was an important lesson on why governments need to pay attention to municipal funding issues, even issues in areas where you aren’t likely to win many seats.

Both municipal politicians and property taxpayers are all too aware of the provincial government’s roll in providing adequate funding to keep down local taxes.

This takes us to one of the bigger problems Scott Moe has faced since becoming premier a year ago.

Upon taking over from Wall, Moe has had to contend with a reduction in the municipal revenue sharing pool from $271 million in 2016 to $241 million in 2017. Moreover, after that $30-million cut in the austerity 2017-18 budget, the revenue sharing pool was frozen at $241 million last so that Moe’s government would have a better shot at balancing the budget this year.

On top of having to contend with cut and freeze, there was now uncertainty for municipal politicians.

The revenue sharing formula had been based on a simple, clean and predictable formula most quite liked.

Under Wall’s administration, it was decided to give one percentage point of the then-five-per-cent provincial sales tax to fund the municipal revenue sharing pool.

Simple. Easy. Predictable. It was a formula that towns, cities, villages and rural municipalities could easily use to determine what amount of money they could expect in future years. That made budgeting decisions for municipalities, who, unlike the province, cannot run deficits, significantly easier.

But then along came that spring 2017 budget that only raised the PST to six per cent but broadening it significantly to things like junk food, restaurant meals and insurance.

It was more money for the province that it clearly needed to fight its deficit. But it also threw it’s revenue-sharing formula out of whack.

Annual provincial sales tax revenue vaulted to close to $2 million, more than $300 million per single percentage point of the now, broader six-percent PST. Ideally, Moe could have re-instated the old onepercentage-point-of-the-PST as the new revenue sharing pool formula and handed over $300-million-plus to the municipalities. Municipalities surely would have been overjoyed over that.

But it wouldn’t have been as helpful to the provincial government’s own deficit fight. The Sask.

Party government clearly needs every penny it can get to balance the budget.

So what Moe did instead at last week’s annual Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) is unveil new formula to fund the revenue sharing pool. It is now three-quarters of percentage point of a much broader six-per-cent PST. In practical terms, that will mean $251 million for the municipal revenue sharing pool in the 201920 budget. That’s a modest $10 million or four-percent more than last year, still less than the $271 million in 2016 and far cry from the $300-million plus it would have been if was a full percentage point.

The NDP and leader Ryan Meili have cried foul, hinting an NDP government could provide a full percentage point.

And mayors of the big cities, where Moe and the Sask. Party are in for tougher political fights, seem happy with the modest increase and even happier to see a return to stable source of funding.

And Moe seems to have dealt with a big potential big headache.

Keeping municipal politicians reasonable happy is key.

Crackers and candlelight A young couple was sharing with an audience the significant changes they were making to their lives. Both were working in New York City in the financial industry and each had ambitious career and financial goals. On their first wedding anniversary their limited disposable income meant their celebration consisted of Shelley Luedtke eating deli meat on Ritz crackers by candlelight and dreaming of the future. They promised each other that one day they would have the money to celebrate their anniversary with a gourmet meal and dancing at the famous Rainbow Room.

Just a few years later that’s exactly what they did. Their careers were going so well they could easily afford that, and many other nights out, if they wanted. But as their income skyrocketed and the promotions came quickly they found themselves working 16 and 18 hour days, leaving little time for much else--including special dinners.

Out of what they said had become habit and obligation, they were getting ready to make their anniversary reservation when she announced she didn’t want to do that again. When he asked what she wanted instead she quietly remarked, “I want to eat deli meat on Ritz crackers.”

I was surprised by the 53% of my gender who said they would break up with a boyfriend who didn’t live up to their expectations for Valentine’s Day. So as 18 billion dollars are spent finding ways for people to say how they feel, there is apparently more on the line than one might think.

band and I enjoyed was a steak and lobster candlelight dinner on the beach at a beautiful resort. As the waves gently lapped up on shore and our toes enjoyed the feel of the sand, a saxophone player treated us to romantic classics. Roses and decadent desserts completed the picture as the sun set over the ocean. It was a pretty spectacular night and one I’ll certainly remember but what made it so memorable was not the food or ambience but the one I was experiencing it with. You can set the stage with all the window dressing you’d like but unless the company is who you want to be with, the production matters little.

Roses are beautiful. So is an empty laundry basket. Or a filled gas tank. Or a fresh cup of coffee brought to my desk. Or any number of gestures that show a level of care. Am I surprised by these things? No. It is something my husband does all the time. Am I grateful? Absolutely, and I try to be as thoughtful toward him.

Because love isn’t sustained or nurtured by a greeting card, heart-shaped box of candy or spectacular display of flowers. It’s the day-today stuff of life that creates meaning and that’s what makes those roses so appreciated and those chocolates extra sweet.

A petal strewn path leading to a candlelight dinner on the beach can be spectacularly romantic, but only if it’s with someone who has also been with you when the setting wasn’t quite so picture perfect and the food not nearly so gourmet.

As 18 billion dollars are spent expressing affection and celebrating relationships today, the best expressions occur within those relationships that will be celebrated just as fully tomorrow. If it’s with the right person, deli meat and Ritz crackers are all that is needed.

Managing Your Money: Preparing for layoffs You’re very good at your job and yet, you’re about to be laid off. That’s the unfortunate reality of job security – or the lack of it – in today’s up and down economy. Fortunately, a layoff doesn’t have to be total doom and gloom – if you’re ready for it. Here are five effective ways to prepare yourself emotionally and financially for a layoff.

1.

Get your finances in order Your layoff may be short or long but it’s prudent to plan for the long haul by determining the minimum amount of money you need each month to cover basic costs for food, housing, debt payments and so on. Identify and cut or, at least trim, nonessential costs.

Find out how much you could receive in Employment Insurance (EI) benefits and other government programs such as those that provide funding for retraining programs.

Figure out how much you’ll need to withdraw from your savings or other sources to fund any re-

maining expenses. Then set a realistic budget and, when the time comes, stick to it.

2.

Save in an emergency fund Whether you’ve been working for a year or a decade, you should build an emergency fund that will cover at least six months of your essential expenses should you be laid off.

3.

Stay the course with your investments If you have a well-conceived financial plan that may include RRSPs, TFSAs, mutual funds and other investments, stay with it. Do not go chasing the latest investment craze by cashing in your investments and speculating on big returns from the latest “hot” stock.

You’re much more likely to lose your money than to hit a wildly speculative jackpot.

Know your employee benefits Find out about any company unemployment benefits you may be entitled to and if your employer-sponsored health/ medical coverage and/or life insurance will end or

continue for a period after your layoff. Consider converting these to individual coverage. Find out what your pension plan options are.

You may also be owed for unused vacation time, project completion bonuses, or other accrued financial benefits – so check.

If you are offered a severance package, don’t be shy about negotiating for a better one. If you aren’t offered a severance package, try for one, you may have an entitlement under provincial employment standards legislation.

5. Update your resume You’re happy and fulfilled by your job but because you never know … keep your resume up to date and stay on the lookout for new opportunities. Networking is also important whether you’re employed or laid off – opportunities can come from anyone or anywhere.

Getting laid off is stressful but by taking the right steps you’ll ease your mind and your transition.

In fact, being laid off may

give you the time you need to take stock of your life and aim for something new and exciting.

You can ease your financial stress during a layoff (and afterward) by talking to your professional advisor about the best financial plan for your situation as it is today and as it will be tomorrow – no matter what tomorrow may bring.

1. Book your flight: the spots on planes for pets are limited.

2. Get in touch with the consulate of your destination country to find out what rules you’ll need to comply with. If you’re heading to an European Union country or to Mexico, for example, the following requirements (and possibly others) will need to be met: • Your pet must be microchipped • Your pet’s vaccinations must be up to date • You must obtain an International Health Certificate for your pet within the 10 days preceding your de-

parture (only a veterinarian can provide this) 3. If you don’t already have one, get an appropriate kennel for your pet.

The kennel should be large enough to permit your pet to both stand up and comfortably turn around in. It should also be well ventilated.

Note that a number of airline companies allow

small dogs and cats to travel in the cabin, provided they stay in their kennel and the kennel fits under the seat. Larger pets must travel in the baggage hold, where they’re placed in a heated and pressurized area.

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons It is our year, that is it is the year of the Police Officer.....OK, maybe I am stretching it a little bit. We just had the Chinese New Year and it is now the “Year of the Pig” of course this could mean the year of your spouse or child depending ......, however, I am claiming it as the Year of the Police Officer.

We had three falsies this week. Two at the same business. I know we are not surprised when we get a false alarm, however, the proprietors of the one sure were surprised when two Police Officers showed up and rushed into their place of business. The other business which had two alarms did not have an up to date list of key holders for their insurance company.

Thus the request, we, your Police Officers would like to ensure that you maintain an up to date «Keyholder” list with your insurance company. It sure is frustrating when we can’t access a building, or surrounding compound to confirm all is good because there are no “Keyholders” available.

We had a several Mental Health calls.

These can be very taxing and demanding on our Staff, as was well as EMS and our Hospitals.

We know when one gets a ticket one can be upset angry and say things they normally would not say. You see we really don’t care what you say to us. You can threaten us, swear at us, but, and this is a big but.....do not involve our home or our family.

Last week an individual stated upon receiving a ticket for not wearing their seatbelt. “I know where you live” To say this got the Member a little excited, would be an understatement.

for uttering threats. The Member was not vindictive and did not arrest them, nor did the Member go back and issue the driver another ticket for not being able to produce their drivers licence, which was also the case. As much as the individual felt it was a BS ticket, the facts were against them. It is simple they were not wearing their seatbelt, even if it was only two blocks.

The subject also said they were going to bring their dog over to the Members house......... maybe to leave a package on the lawn????

Regardless, the Member was not impressed.

It is pretty simple, stay away from our homes and our families. That is just unacceptable and I hope this individual is ashamed for their comments, especially being the Member was just doing their job. Now if your spouse got a seatbelt ticket lately......maybe it was them???

With the Assistance of our Forensic Identification Section from Yorkton we are investigating a Break and Enter and Theft from the R.M. of Brock in Kisbey. A suspect was arrested in Estevan for possessing some of the stolen property, however, we presently do not have the evidence to charge anyone with the Break and Enter. Our investigation is continuing.

So you backed into a vehicle, you check and don’t see damage and drive away. That is failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Leave a note, knock on a door of the house and the Police will not likely get involved. Drive away and the Police get involved, especially when there is a witness, and being it is small town they recognize the operator of the vehicle. Our investigation continues.

We had an altercation between an employer and an employee.

If the individual has no Criminal Record and the assault is minor, like a push or shove, well we have to be honest, you will not get your pound of flesh. The accused will get at best a stern

We had a rollover collision in Kenosee.

Two individual’s were arrested. One for having two outstanding warrants and the other for Impaired Driving, Failing to Comply with release conditions and Taking a Motor Vehicle Without Consent. EMS assisted as did TPZ Towing. We would like to put a big thank you out to those that stopped to help.

An individual called the RCMP requesting we find their ex. We stated we can’t do that. The individual stated what if their ex committed a crime. We then stated we would investigate that but we still would not be able to report on where their ex was. The long and the short of it is we are investigating their allegations against their ex and may end up charging the complainant for “Public Mischief” - With intent to mislead, cause a peace officer to enter on or continue and investigation by making a false statement.

We are investigating allegations of Bullying with some preteens.

Sometimes the issue is a lack of parenting, other times unfortunately we find the parents are bullies as well.

Fraud, it’s fraud, trust me it’s fraud!!!!!!.......and I know, yes we are all gullible. An individual gave out his DOB and surprise someone tried to open up a bank account under the individual’s name.

Fortunately, the bank in Regina was switched on.

We are now investigating a complaint of identity theft.

We are investigating some allegations of illegal drugs being sold, not that there is anywhere in our Detachment that can sell them legally.

You may not be aware but I am fond of humour. Really I like humour. So here is a joke that relates to Policing.

The Constable stated the wife shot the husband because she had cleaned the kitchen floor and he walked across it when it was still wet. The Corporal responded “Have you arrested her yet?” The Constable responded “Not yet, the floor is still wet!!!!” (This is a joke) We had a report of an individual not complying with his release conditions.

Probation was advised by the Electronic Monitoring device. Although no charges resulted at this time we will be monitoring his monitoring device.

Knock, knock who is there? Nobody home, thus we have another individual facing a charge of failing to comply with their release conditions.

Your Members are investigating an individual who is breaching their release conditions.

I am not saying the Courts are smarter than any other individual but if one is on conditions of no contact with someone, maybe don’t try and find a justifiable excuse to have contact. Charges are expected to be laid shortly and an individual may end up eating DQ for a period of time.

With the cold and snow people tended to stay off the roadways and drive slower. Not slow enough for some being we had at least half a dozen vehicles hit the ditch.

Tickets were issued for no seatbelt - $175, no insurance - $580, failing to stop at a stop sign - $230 (many, many stop signs), cell phone use - $280, fail to complete log book $150 and speeding with the most expensive ticket being $200.

Warnings were issued for not being able to produce drivers licence, speeding, careless driving, fail to stop at a stop sign, insecure load, fail to wear seatbelt properly, damaged windshield, obstructed licence plate, headlamp emit green or blue light, have auxiliary lamps mounted higher than the headlamps and obstructed windshield.

Inspection notices were issued for removal of window tint, excessive damage to windshield, inadequate brake lights, inadequate fender or mudflaps.

VanMeer honored for years of service At the recent SUMA convention, Carlyle Fire Chief Donald VanMeer accepted a long time service award for serving the community of Carlyle for the last 31 years. Fire Chief Van Meer is a great asset to this department and we would like to thank him for his continued service.

Donald, husband and a father of three, joined the Carlyle Department in 1988 as a firefighter. After a few

years, he was voted in by his peers as deputy chief.

Donald has seen many changes in dispatching, as when he first started, his house was outfitted with a red phone on the wall and the community alarm.

As technology progressed, the department moved to pagers and now cell phones.

Donald was voted in as chief a few years ago and has humbly held the position since.

He has spent countless hours working with the department and building relationships within our community and surrounding departments.

Donald is an invaluable member of our fire department and our community.

Congratulations on 31 years of dedicated service, Donald.

Carlyle Cougar Novice teams co-host tournament Vanessa Kirkpatrick Sports Contributor Carlyle Cougar Team (Chris) competed this weekend in their home tournament. It was an exciting weekend for all the boys to play on their home ice.

They started Saturday off by playing against the Virden Oil Caps losing 5-2. Rylan Levesque earned himself the Heart and Hussle award this first game.

After losing the first game the boys dropped down to the B side and took on Rocanville, winning 14-1 and Owen Light earned himself the Heart & Hussle award.

Winning this game took the boys to the B Final, here they faced off against the Estevan Canucks. This was a super exciting game and were head to head until the bitter end, sending the game to a shoot out to determine the winner.

The hometown team was victorious, making them the winners of the B side.

This week the boys will be super busy, as they travelled to Kipling on Feb. 13, then on Feb. 16 they host Estevan on home ice and on Feb. 17 Lampman is in town.

So if you need to get out of the house over the long weekend, head over to the rink and cheer the boys on.

Schmidt wins 2nd Canada-West title Submitted Carlyle’s Nathen Schmidt won the Canada-West Championships at 61kg at the University of Fraser Valley.

This is Nathen’s second Canada-West title in his first two years of university, one at 68kg and one at 61kg.

Nathen’s team, The University of Alberta GoldenBears, also took

home the Men’s Team title winning by 1 point over the University of Saskatchewan.

Manor’s Angela Aalbers and Tianna Kennet also competed at the Canada-West Championships over the weekend. Tianna took home a gold medal in the 55kg weight class with the University of Calgary and was named

the Co-Women’s Athlete of the year. Angela placed 4th in the 63kg weight class and her team, the University of Saskatchewan, won the Women’s Canada-West Team Title.

Nathen and Tianna qualified their weight classes for the U-Sports National Wrestling Championships on Feb. 22nd.

Oxbow Huskies begin playoff action

By Laura Kish Oxbow Huskies travelled to KW Oil Kings in Game 1 of a two-game total point series on Wednesday, Feb. 6. This night was also the inaugural Oil Kings salute to the local officials.

Derek Cooney scored their first goal, assisted by Kolby Fleury and Kyle Gessner. The Oil Kings scored three goals in the first period ending that period with a 3-1 lead.

Seconds into period two the Oil Kings scored again. Oxbow Huskies also added another point in the second period by Matt Weinrauch with assists going to Blake Brooks and Ryley Giblett.

The Huskies Derek Cooney scored their third and final goal in

the third period. With just three seconds left in the game the Oil Kings added another goal.

KW Oil Kings recorded taking 35 shots on net to the Huskies 30.

Officials were kept busy at this game with six minor penalties assessed to each team and five-minute and a game misconduct to each team.

The Huskies who were down by two goals welcomed the KW Oil Kings on Friday that same week for Game 2 of the two-game total point series.

Both the Huskies and the Oil Kings scored a goal apiece in the first period. Points for the Huskies went to Levi Barnstable with assist going to Steven Henderson.

Congratulations and best wishes to Justin and Alesha Boettcher on the safe arrival of their first baby – a son, Zackary Kenneth who was born Feb. 6.

On Feb. 9 Murray Cowan (Estevan), Adam Cowan (Moose Jaw), Dustin Cowan (Weyburn) and friend Sam Dusault (Estevan) spent the day at the Cowan farm snowmobiling around the area and visiting with the family.

It was another busy weekend at Alida Rink on Feb. 9 when the Alida Youth Rec Hockey team hosted the Oak Lake Youth team. It was another good game to watch which saw the Alida Youth winning by the score of 4-2. Way to go teams, great game.

Leonard and Lil Patton attended a hockey tournament on Feb. 10 in Melita, MB where they watched their grandson Keagan play with the Oxbow Pee Wee Huskies. Also playing are Madison Beriault and Thomas Harrison, they too are from Alida. The Oxbow Pee Wee Huskies won the Gold – Way to go guys!

The Alida Curling Club is busy taking names for their next curling event – the Alida Ladies Bonspiel. They have three teams entered now and are of course hoping for more entries before next weekend. Oh yea, remember ladies, your team should be in a costume theme. They are finalizing the events that will be happening during this bonspiel, which may be featuring a delicious chicken supper on the Saturday and quite likely some ticket draws will be available as well.

Come on out, see all the antics in action and join in the fun. See you at the rink.

Act One Productions has officially decided that they will take a year off. So there will be NO drama production this year in March. However, the Alida Rec. Board has decided that they will hold a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre on the same Saturday that would have been our Drama Dinner Theatre (check Community calendar for date). Do keep your eyes and ears open for more information to be posted as plans are fi-

nalized.

The “Breakfast at the Rink” this past Sunday (Feb. 10) had Kitchen group #2 serving up 29 breakfasts – good job done guys and gals.

The Breakfast Challenge total remains at 54. It is always good to see all the familiar faces coming back for breakfast every week. Next week it is Kitchen group #3 at the helm – see you at the rink.

Did you watch curling on Sunday (Feb. 10)? One could surely get their fill of curling, and if you didn’t it was your own fault. I was in seventh heaven, as I latterly sat curled up in my big chair, under a nice warm blanket and watched men’s curling all day – afternoon and into the evening. Saw semi-finals and finals of both Manitoba and Alberta – just wished I could have seen a Saskatchewan game too.

However I was pleased with the outcome of the games, Manitoba saw Team Carruthers coming out to represent them. It was Team Koe coming out to represent Alberta and then heard

Pee Wee Cougars wrap up regular season Danielle Benjamin Sports Contributor Our PeeWee Cougars have wrapped up their regular season play this past week. We have unofficially ended up in second place in the Moose Mountain Minor Hockey League falling behind Oxbow who sits in first place.

lost 5-9 February 9th vs Moosomin – game 1 of Provincial play – lost 2-5 February 10th vs Kipling – final league game – lost 5-7 Next Peewee action is when our team heads to Moosomin on February 14th at 6:30 pm for game 2 of Provincial play. This series is 2 game total points – so

we are down 3 goals going into it but hopefully our team can play hard and strong and come out victorious. We continue to practice and get ready for Provincials and Playoffs. We will keep you posted on our results and next games.
