Presley Onufreychuk (Manor) is a first year University student in Regina Sask, Presley has always believed in giving and making others happy.

This Christmas season she decided to organize a shoebox drive in hopes to make Christmas a little bit brighter for Children at the Regina transition house. Presley set out with a goal of donating 45 shoeboxes and through the generosity of many people from the communities of Manor, Carlyle, Wawota, Redvers, Regina and Balgonie, she was able to exceed her goal and donate 69 boxes in total. Way to go Presley!

The invitation of Baby Jesus is for always In searching for the Christmas story to share I came across a gem that had me in tears twice before I finally decided this was the one!

In 1994 two Americans were invited by the Russian Department of Education to teach morals and ethics. One of their groups included boys and girls who had been abandoned, abused, and left in a government-run orphanage.

The two told the children about Mary and Joseph, the stable, and Jesus placed in a manger. The children listened intently. They then gave the children three small pieces of cardboard, to make a manger, and a small paper square, cut from yellow napkins. Supplies were limited.

Following instructions, the children tore the paper into strips which they laid in the manger for straw. Small squares of flannel were used for the baby’s blanket. A doll-like baby was cut from tan felt brought from the United States. The orphans busily assembled their manger. In the words of the instructor, “I walked

among them to see if they needed any help.

Little Misha, who was about six years old had finished his project. As I looked at the manger, I was startled to see not one, but two babies in the manger.”

With the translator’s help, Misha told his story. When he came to the part where Mary put the baby Jesus in the manger, Misha started to ad-lib, creating his own ending to the story: “And when Maria laid the baby in the manger, Jesus looked at me and asked me if I had a place to stay. I told him I have no mamma and I have no papa, so I don’t have any place to stay.

“Then Jesus told me I could stay with him.

But I told him I couldn’t, because I didn’t have a gift to give him like everybody else did. But I wanted to stay with Jesus so much, so I thought about what I had that maybe I could use for a gift. I thought maybe if I kept him warm, that would be a good gift. “So I asked Jesus, ‘If I keep you warm, will that be a good enough gift?’ And Jesus told me, ‘If you keep me warm, that will be the best gift

anybody ever gave me.’

So I got into the manger, and then Jesus looked at me and he told me I could stay with him--for always.” As little Misha finished his story, his eyes brimmed full of tears that splashed down his little cheeks. Putting his hand over his face, his head dropped to the table and his shoulders shook as he sobbed and sobbed. The little orphan had found someone who would never abandon nor abuse him, someone who would stay with him – for always. (Author Unknown) When we meet Jesus on the last day, we will be judged on how we treated those in need.

How we treat the least of our brothers and sisters, that is how we treat Jesus (Matthew 25:40).

Like Misha, we need to do what we can for the orphans and refugees?

Picture a mother fleeing death and destruction in her country and walking with her child into the hostile world we see on our news channels.

“You are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners.” (Deuteronomy 10: 18-19)

The Alida Community wishes to acknowledge and congratulate Maurice and Yvonne Desautels (Carlyle) who celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on Nov. 22. Their family from Alida, Oxbow, Estevan, Regina and Swift Current helped them celebrate their anniversary on Nov. 25 at the Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle.

The Desautels family gathered once again at the Moose Mountain Lodge on Dec. 16 to help their dad Maurice celebrate his 95th Birthday. Happy Birthday Maurice from the Alida community, may you have many more happy and healthy birthdays to come.

There was a very nice crowd who all attended a retirement celebration in honor of Andy Girard on Dec. 14 at the Alida Rink. Andy has worked for the R.M. of Reciprocity #32 for 41 years, and the last 12 years as shop foreman. We wish Andy good luck and all the best in the next adventure of his life and enjoy your retirement, Andy. We will then welcome and wish the new foreman all the best when he takes over in the New Year.

Alida held their “Old Fashioned Christmas Concert” at the Alida Hall on Dec. 15 with a nice little crowd in attendance. Unperishable food donations was collected at the door, and later given to a family in need. Everyone enjoyed the music and songs performed by our local artists. At the end of the program Santa paid a visit and handed out treat bags to the young. Everyone then enjoyed a snack including hot chocolate and cake.

Rod and Janice Heise, Kronau, SK attended the retirement celebrations for Andy Girard. Rod was the RM secretary here in Alida from 1977-1982. Both he and Andy had been hired in the same year.

Marcy’s Diner/M&N Diner officially closed its doors Dec. 14 and remained closed all day Saturday.

The Café will reopen under new management and ownership on Dec. 17. We wish Lori Phenix good luck and all the best in her new adventure as owner of “361 Café “. See you around Lori.

Time is definitely moving along quite quickly and the holidays will be here. Students and staff will soon be out of school for the Christmas break

and classes resumes on Jan. 7. Hopefully they all enjoy their much earned holiday. We are so looking forward for the Redvers School Christmas Concert (Dec. 19) – it’s always great to see the little ones preform. Oxbow’s School Concert is Dec. 20. Parents and Grandparents will do their best to attend these events. The students are so excited at this time of the year. These events really do put one into the Christmas mood as you can just feel the excitement grow.

I’m sure that the little ones are counting down the days for the Big Day to arrive. It is a great time for family and friends get-togethers. If you are travelling during the season – please remember to Drive safely and Take care out there on the roads.

Also just a reminder that The Observer office

will be closed during Christmas week – from Dec. 21 – 26 and again on Dec. 28 and on Jan. 1. They will be open Dec. 27 and Dec. 31 at regular hours. I will take this time to wish them all very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays.

Four members of the Estevan Jr. A hockey team, namely, Kade McMillen (Carievale), Ryder Pierson (Estevan), Jayden Davis (Alameda) and Bronson Adams (McKinney, Texas) joined the Carlyle Novice Cougars teams at their practice on Dec. 13. Afterwards everyone enjoyed pizza. The Novice teams had a lot of fun and thank the four Bruins for taking the time to make the trip to Carlyle.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons Christmas is soon to be upon us, however, as much as we get in the Christmas Spirit ourselves, well, we still have a job to do. If you don’t want to be charged, or don’t want a ticket don’t break the law. Seriously do you think reminding us that it is Christmas and asking us how we expect an individual to pay a fine will make a difference? Unfortunately - “Not” Especially when profanity is utilized. Realistically though, our fines are usually not due until January now.

I know to those that get them it does not make a difference, but at least you don’t owe until next year.

We had a 911 hang up. With the assistance of the property representative we were able to determine that the “Postal machine” that is hooked up to the phone line called 911. We did not attend, or should have we? Do you believe in ghosts or aliens?

Well, we don’t or do we?

Maybe there was an elf involved. I know I still believe in Santa Claus and he has elves.

We received a request to serve a subpoena for Saskatoon Police Service. The witness attended the Detachment and our file was concluded. We also assisted Moose Jaw Police Service by releasing someone who had a warrant.

Just because something is “legal” there

are still rules and regulations. Thus as a reminder, yes “Cannabis” is legal, however, not for youth. One youth is now having to deal with a hefty fine. A for adults it is not a free for all. There are restrictions on where it can be smoked, and in public is not one of those places.

Now there is child that has two parents that are no longer together.

This happens a lot, too much unfortunately.

Some parents put the child or children first.

Others do not. Then you add to the mix Grandparents, some possible mental health and addiction issues and the Police often get involved.

This was the case where one parent locked themselves in a vehicle with the child. We received several calls and became involved. We mediated and resolved the situation temporarily and hopefully with the assistance of Children and Family Services future Police involvement can be avoided. Like really, is this the memory you want for your child?

So our colleagues in Manitoba received a report of a stolen side by side. It was recovered by Brandon Police Service only to discover it was stolen. OK, stolen twice?

You see the individual that reported it stolen bought it and another side by side from an individual in Saskatchewan and did not realize they were stolen, at least that is the story we are getting. We are now investigating to determine if we can charge the individual from Saskatchewan who sold them.

So there is a gentleman

(term used very loosely) that is on conditions to not contact another individual. Well he see’s the other individuals truck and takes photo’s of it and curses at the occupant. Although he did not breach his conditions his actions came to the attention of the Police. We have yet to determine why he took photo’s, however, we did resolve the incident, for now.

If you put lipstick on a pig it is still a pig. That said if you put lipstick on the wall of a hockey rink it is vandalism. Let us just say it was the symbol of Germany during World War II. We fully believe those that did it had no idea the true impact of their actions.

It was quickly removed being it was so near our cenotaph - in the words of Brent. “Not on my watch” `Elder Abuse is becoming more common, or at least reported more often. We received a report of an elderly individual having their bank account accessed by an unknown individual and having their money taken. This is still under investigation. We did charge another individual who stole a bank card from an elderly family member and subsequently stole several hundred dollars. Personally I think there is a special place in “you know where” for people that do this. `Members responded to a complaint of a couple of intoxicated males in Carlyle entering and leaving business’s. We identified both subjects and advised the Registered Owner of the Alberta plated vehicle that

his licence had expired.

It still amazes me how one things leads to another. No further action was required. Sometimes just talking to the Police is enough. `Two intoxicated individuals were not getting along at a residence.

Once the one individual found out the Police were called they left.

Matter resolved. `There was a rollover injury collision with the driver being the sole occupant. This investigation resulted in a seizure of some Cannabis, which the driver is getting tickets for. Remember no cannabis in the car. The driver was also provided a 60-day suspension and was charged for impaired driving by drug.

We received a call of a possible domestic. Our Member called the complainant who explained they had not witnessed the domestic, however, due to some comments they read on Facebook caused them to believe there could be a Domestic. We confirmed it was just a nasty break up.

File concluded.

Members responded to a 911 call where there was crying and arguing overhead by the 911 operator. Upon arrival it was determined two adult care givers were trying to provide guidance to a teenager that, wait for it, wait for it, the teenager did not like the rules or how they were being treated. Members provided support, encouragement and guidance.

We had a report of a lost suitcase between Redvers and Antler. If you happen to find it call us. We know who is looking for it.

We had a deer versus car collision. As often is the case the deer did not survive, and the car was able to drive away.

Remember, deer do not just cross where the signs are.

Most expensive speeding tickets were for $296 and $320 One individual was less than happy about getting a seatbelt ticket.

Apparently they have put over 800,000 km’s on their vehicle and never had an accident.

I often feel like asking, “How many have you caused?” but that is my inside voice, at least this time. I did state, however, that if the individual did not feel like wearing it for their sake, wear it for mine being I am tired of picking up the pieces at accidents. My guess is this individual will get another ticket.

Again the fog has resulted in some near misses. Please folks, why do people pass in the fog? What is the rush?

If this keeps up we know we will get a collision and it will not be pretty.

Not for those involved and not for those that have to respond, like the Police, EMS and Volunteer Firefighters.

We had a vehicle lose a tire. It is always a good idea to inspect your tires once and a while and make sure the nuts are tight, let alone there. I am not saying that some people deliberately take nuts off tires to cause an accident, but, well, yes there are people out there like that.

Members issued tickets, written warnings and inspection tickets for failure to wear a seatbelt, obstructed licence plate, fail to produce a drivers licence, insecure load, inadequate daytime running lights, inadequate tail lights, inadequate muffler/ exhaust, inadequate head lights, inadequate mudflaps/fenders, drive without a licence, display white light to the rear of the vehicle, and window tint. We were busy, especially our brethren on the Traffic Unit.

Why would we waste our time pulling over a vehicle for an obstructed licence plate? Don’t we have better things to do? Yes we do, however, sometimes the plate is obstructed because they don’t have insurance, they are wanted, they are suspended or, well we find more when we pull them over. It is a policing fact. Criminals can’t help themselves.

They attract our attention.

Some people have been getting inspection notices for failure to display shift pattern for manual transmission.

Remember, we are not the ones that make the rules, we just enforce them. A quick fix it to print one off and put it on your visor. Sometimes this inspection ticket comes as an attitude adjustment. Telling a Police Office how to do their job, or telling them they know more about the law than they do is counterproductive.

Gordon F. Kells High School Mosaic Meal The Mosaic Meal (Potluck) will again be held on the last day before the break, Friday, December 21st. Each student is asked to bring enough food for 5 - 6 people according to the grade’s category. The food is to be brought on the Friday, between 11:30 AM and 11:55 AM. Warming up the food at school is not possible, so please bring it ready to serve. The meal starts at noon. The categories are: Grade 7, Chinese food; Grade 8, Mexican food; Grade 9, Italian food; Grade 10, Ukrainian food; Grade 11, appetizers; Grade 12, desserts; Grade 7-12 Filipino students, Filipino food. Please remember to avoid nuts in your meal preparations. Food Bank donations have also started to come in. The class which brings in the most food items, eats first at the Mosaic Meal.

Diana Prudie of Regina has returned home after spending several weeks visiting with her sisters, Linda Birnie and Sandra Murray and their families.

Congratulations to Matt and Mallory Olson of Estevan on the birth of a daughter on Dec. 9. She weighed 6 lbs. 15 oz. and has been named Halle Nicole Jade.

Also congratulations to Jordan and Kimberly Leugner of White City on the arrival of their daughter on Nov. 21. She weighed 7 lbs. 10 oz. and has been named Emma Rose.

Sympathy to the family and friends of the late Berniece Sweeting who passed away at Redvers on Dec. 5 at the age of 88 years old. She was one of 9 children born to Roy and Elda Davis and lived in Maryfield for many years.

Once again the seniors of the community were treated to the annual Lions Christmas supper on Dec. 10. A delicious meal was served to the appreciative crowd of around 175 guests. Winners of the door prizes were Sylvia McWhirter and Ingrid Hansen.

The Museum Santas Surprise Raffle were Shirley Brimner, Evelyn Green and Marie Brownlee. This was their 50th anniversary of serving the community in this way.

Quebec hypocritical on Western oil

By Murray Mandryk When you break down who has gotten what from federal equalization since it came into existence in 1957, you come up with some interesting things.

For starters, total all the money withdrawn from the program in 61 years and you find that the west has received slightly over $57 billion or 14.4 per cent of the total doled out from this federal program designed to ensure all Canadians can enjoy a similar quality of living.

However, you might be amazed how massively disproportion this money has been handed out to Western provinces.

While B.C. has received $3 billion (.6 per cent) and Saskatchewan has received $8 billion (2.1 per cent) Alberta has received $92 million (zero per cent, rounded off) reflective of how seldom these have provinces have qualified because of their nonrenewable fossil fuel resources.

In fact, Manitoba has received 80.7 per cent of all Western equalization money. Because it has less non-renewable oil and gas money and a lot of hydroelectric revenue not counted in the formula, Manitobans have received $46 billion or 11.7 of Canadas equalization payments throughout history.

In contrast to the West, equalization payments have been the lifeblood of Atlantic provinces, $125 billion or 30. 8 per cent of all equalization money doled out.

It breaks down as follows: Nova Scotia, $44 million or 11.1 per cent; New Brunswick, $43 billion or 10.9 per cent, Newfoundland and Labrador, $25 billion or 6.4 per cent, and; Prince Edward Island, $9 billion or 2.4 per cent.

Ontario, that has mostly been a have province, has received $17 billion or 4.2 per cent. However, its numbers are inflated because it is our largest province and equalization payments are partly doled out a per capita basis.

But what will amaze many is how much Quebec has received, $198 billion or 50.5 per cent of all the equalization money.

And guess what? Quebec is due for a whopping $1.3 billion more in 2019 for a total $14.1 billion.

Like all statistics, this one is best accompanied by a little perspective.

Quebec has a larger population than the entire Atlantic region, somewhat accounting for why it has received more money than those four provinces, combined.

It should also be noted that Quebec has been a legitimately poor province for much of Canadas modern history. Fortunes have clearly smiled on la Belle Province in recent years, but as recently as 2012 stories talked about Quebec being the poorest province in Canada.

Finally, it should again be noted that hydroelectric power is excluded from equalization calculations.

But its also in this here where one begins to wonder why Quebec is so oblivious to how it benefits from confederation. One of those benefits is equalization that, essentially, winds up sharing Western oil riches with the rest of the nation.

Consider Quebec Premier Francois Legaults comment that is there “no social acceptability for oil in Quebec”.

Well, Quebec behaviour doesnt reflect its own rhetoric.

An increasingly affluent Quebec is now buying more light and heavy trucks and SUVs than ever, so oil seems somewhat socially acceptable.

Up until 2016 when Quebec discovered the benefit of Enbridge’s pipeline that now allows Alberta oil into Quebec, 85 per cent of Quebec oil was imported from north African and Middle Eastern nations.

That it would rather have Middle Eastern oil than western oil is one thing.

But that it would turn around an accept equalization money, largely derived from the fact that Western provinces are penalized for their oil to the direct benefit of Quebec through equalization, is quite another.

If this country is going to work, perhaps it begins with parts of country appreciating the west and realizing how lucky they are.

The cold, the flu and a chocolate Yule Log The 1989 film “Christmas Vacation” has become something of a tradition for fans despite the fact it is not typical seasonal fare depicting snow-covered landscapes or a beautiful couple gazing into each other’s eyes as logs crackle in the fireplace. Instead the audience catches up with Clark Griswold, husband and father, who My Outlook wants his loved ones to enjoy Shelley Luedtke nothing short of a perfect family Christmas. Inevitably, disasters mount.

While we may not have a squirrel tear apart the house after emerging from a freshly cut tree, or a massive light display that won’t light up on cue, most people can relate to something that didn’t go quite as planned for Christmas. A no-fail recipe fails. Gifts get lost in transit. Power outages occur.

Bad weather rolls in.

My family doesn’t have to think too far back. It was last year.

Illness hit first. Then there was a change in a family member’s work schedule. Then remember this? Environment Canada issued a special weather statement warning of -40° to -50° degrees for Christmas. So the people who were sick couldn’t contribute their usual family favourites to the meal, those affected by the extreme cold changed their plans to travel in the day instead of evening, and it quickly became apparent we wouldn’t have many together at any one time.

Our traditions typically include a special meal Christmas Eve followed by the candlelight service at church. After returning home we indulge in a buffet of dips, nuts, candy, and my husband’s recipe for delicious hot apple cider, over lots of visiting and posing for pictures. But last Christmas Eve we sat down to a modified version of our meal, most notably missing our favourite dessert, and realizing many of our traditions over the next hours would be going by the wayside.

more surprised to see a friend standing there holding a platter with a stunning chocolate Yule Log. So unexpected...so appreciated. It was delicious--made all the more sweet by the knowledge that in the midst of their schedule they took the time to make and deliver such a special gift.

We couldn’t get to church that evening so we did some different things at home. The healthy ones attended the next day and as we saw the sun glitter off the snow in the bitter cold there was a sparkle in the air. A picture suitable for the kind of rejoicing Christmas Day should bring.

The next couple of days added to the unusualness and it was all…pretty great. We got jostled out of long-standing routines and experienced the celebration of Christmas in new, unanticipated ways.

It was a young couple far from home. Responding to a government decree. Separated from family. No place to stay. Having a baby. Surrounded by strangers. Amazed at who was arriving. Pondering what it meant. It’s a far cry from bountiful dining tables, designer Christmas trees and putting on a perfect family face we erringly think Christmas has to be about. But lest anyone think that first Christmas went all wrong, we can be assured it went very much according to plan. God’s plan.

The story of Christmas is as familiar to me as my own name. That’s why it was so good to get shaken out of the traditions to again focus on its truth. Because it’s not just the little things that can go wrong.

Sadly, it can be huge life-altering events that blindside and send us reeling. How much more that in those times we need more than tinsel and trinkets.

Christmas is hope. Christmas is God’s plan for redemption. Christmas is Christ. An angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

I have plans for Christmas…and I can’t wait.

But more importantly, maybe…just maybe...something I do this Christmas could be an unanticipated and unexpected blessing for someone else.

That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Who gets Prince’s little red Corvette?

The late musician, Prince, left behind a musical legacy that will be enjoyed for generations.

What he did not leave behind was a Will and that has cost his legitimate heirs a lot of money and months of uncertainty when 30 other individual claims, including those of strangers claiming to be his long-lost children, had to be adjudicated in a Minnesota court where Prince lived and died. Who should have received his financial legacy, his properties, and even his little red Corvette? What Prince might have wanted will never be known because he did not have a Will. It was the courts who decided who got what.

It’s true, Prince had a very sizeable estate but the size of the estate isn’t important: Prince should have had an estate plan including a Will – and so should you. Here’s why: • A Will designates how your estate – money, property, insurance proceeds

and other investments – should be distributed. By clearly stating your wishes for how your legacy should be passed on, you will protect your family from uncertainty and reduce the administrative expenses incurred by your estate.

• Living Wills, Advanced Healthcare Directives, and Powers of Attorney for Personal Care provide directions for your care in the event of catastrophic illness or disability, whereas a regular will only takes effect upon your passing.

• An Executor (sometimes called a Personal Representative or liquidator in Québec) is the person or persons named in your Will to settle your estate according to your documented wishes.

• Liquid assets should be set aside to pay for taxes, debts, the costs of settling your estate, and/or other obligations.

• Your beneficiaries should be clearly stated for all your registered invest-

ments and insurance policies. In many cases, it will be preferable to designate your estate as beneficiary so that these proceeds are administered according to the terms of your will.

• Financial assets should be comprehensively listed -- your bank accounts and locations, insurance policies and amounts, investment accounts, and other financial information –and be sure your Executor and/or survivors know where to find this document.

• An estate plan becomes even more essential if you own a business, are divorced or part of a blended family, have disabled dependants, or are responsible for the care of elderly or minor relatives.

• You should revise your estate plan following any major life event such as a marriage or divorce, birth of a child or grandchild, or death of a spouse.

Cataracts in canines Your faithful companion is 10 years old. He’s in good shape, but you’ve begun to notice something: a white, grey or bluish cloud in his eyes. What’s going on?

A visit to your veterinarian will likely confirm that your dog has cataracts, a relatively common condition among older dogs.

Cataracts occur when proteins in the lens of the eye clump together and cloud an area of the lens.

As a result, the passage of light into the eye becomes obstructed.

Small cataracts likely won’t disturb your dog’s vision too much, but if nothing is done about the issue and the lens becomes entirely opaque, your dog will lose his sight.

Causes The most common cause of cataracts is aging.

However, the genetic background of certain breeds, like poodles and Yorkshire terriers, make them more

susceptible to hereditary cataracts. Other possible but less common eye issues in canines include retinal diseases and ocular trauma.

Treatments There are various methods involving medication and/or surgery to slow the progression of cataracts.

However, it’s impossible

to stall the lens’ natural aging process and the recommended treatment will depend on the stage of the condition.

If you spot cataracts forming in your dog’s eye, visit your veterinarian right away. The sooner your canine gets diagnosed, the better the prognosis.

Cougar Teddy Bear toss a huge hit

Submitted by Nicole Currie The Cougars hosted the Carnduff Red Devils on the 14th. They had hoped to have the same outcome as their meeting in Carnduff in November, but it turned out to go the other way. The Red Devils struck first with a goal from Devon Carriere seven minutes into the period. Cooper Fox had a beauty shot shortly after, trying to get the Cougars on the board, but it was a nice save made by Rubeniuk.

Nico Anderson gave the Devils a 2-0 lead with just over five minutes left. The Cougars worked hard but couldn’t seem to get one in until Nathen Deck gets them on the board before the period is over, with a helper from Ben Johnstone. It’s a 2-1 game.

Carnduff strikes first again, with a goal from Trevor Geiger, just 20 seconds into the second. Just a minute and a half later, Carnduff is awarded with a penalty shot. The puck goes wide and it’s a huge sigh of relief for the Cougar fans. The relief didn’t last long as Nico Anderson nets one making it a 4-1 game. The Cougars have had a lot shots, but just can’t seem to get a break. The shots after the second are: Carlyle 27 and Carnduff 19.

This period, the Cougars strike first with a goal from Ben Johnstone and the assist going to Marc Shaw, just one minute into the period. The Red Devil lead is cut in half until Carnduff’s Blake McMillen scores and is followed by Brandon Trask and Trevor Geiger. The game ends in a score of 7-2. The Cougars out shot Carnduff 35-31, but it was just one of those games that didn’t go their way.

The Cougars MVP’s of the game were Payton Faber and Orlando Horn who both had huge smiles after skating with the team. Congrats to Jason Dixon who is the first of 3 lucky people who will get their chance at the Pharmasave $25,000 Chance To Win on Feb. 1st. The next 2 draws will be at the Cougars home games on Jan. 4th and 18th. Thank you to everyone who donated stuffed animals in our Teddy Bear Toss! These stuffed animals will be donated to Emergency Response Teams and to a Shelter bringing many smiles and comfort to children when they need it most.

Novice Cougars Chris suffer first loss of the season

Vanessa Kirkpatrick Sports Contributor Chris’ Novice Cougars kicked off the weekend playing a home game on Saturday, Dec. 15 against White Bear winning 44-0.

Sunday, Dec. 16 the team travelled to Redvers, playing their hardest game of the season. Unfortunately, they suffered their first loss, losing 2-3 in the last period. Overall it was a great weekend for the boys.

Come cheer them on next weekend where they will be playing the other Carlyle Novice team, Joey’s Novice Cougars. This will be a great game the boys have been anticipating for weeks.

Holiday safety tips from CAA Saskatchewan Planning to be at home, away visiting family or taking a winter getaway during the holidays? Protect yourself and your family with some safety tips from CAA Saskatchewan.

Home for the holidays safety tips: Ensure artificial Christmas trees are “fire resistant” and that live trees are always fresh and moist.

Set up live and artificial trees away from fireplaces, heaters, and other heat sources.

Inspect holiday lights for broken, frayed or loose connections and throw out damaged sets. Turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house. Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into ground fault circuit interrupters.

Keep decorations away from lights, candles, heaters, fireplaces, etc. Place candles in non-combustible containers and never leave burning candles unattended.

As you buy your gifts, it’s a safe idea to keep packaging of high priced items out of sight. Don’t give burglars a shopping list of what they might find in your home. Keep watch for any suspicious behaviour in your neighbourhood and report any questionable observations to the proper authorities.

Keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children. Do not leave cooking or baking unattended.

Have the chimney and furnace professionally cleaned and inspected. Ensure that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working.

Away from home for the holidays safety tips: Suspend newspaper delivery. Arrange for someone to pick up your mail or contact the service to store it until your return.

Show discretion on social media, never letting folks know you are away from home.

Ensure all doors and windows are locked.

Use timers for lights and possibly the TV or radio.

Turn off your water supply or have someone enter the home and check on things daily to ensure the pipes are not frozen. (This is a requirement of most insurance policies during the winter months).

Ask a neighbour to shovel snow around your driveway and sidewalks. Encourage neighbours to use your driveway so it looks like someone is coming and going on a regular basis.

Leave blinds or curtains in normal position – don’t close them completely.

Close and lock the garage door. Keep your vehicle locked, especially if it has an electric garage door opener.

Make sure your home insurance is up to date and that it will provide coverage for your belongings. Advise your insurance broker of any changes required for major purchases or renovations.

CAA Insurance has developed a Property Inventory Checklist that can be used to create a list of personal belongings along with their replacement value. In the event of a claim, the checklist provides valuable information when settling your claim with an adjustor.

Jetting away for the holidays safety tips: Check your booked flights frequently. Flight cancellations and delays are likely during peak periods. Also check your flight status prior to driving to the airport.

Know your airline’s cancellation policy. Some airlines may be waiving fees and issuing changes due to possible rebooking policies.

Monitor weather conditions – both for the departure and destination cities.

Don’t forget your travel insurance.

Make sure your passport is up to date and is valid for time required by the country or countries visited.

Pack any medications in their original containers and store in your carry-on bags.

Keep a full tank or at minimum a half tank of fuel. This helps reduce moisture in the gas tank plus it adds weight to your vehicle.

Check the tire pressure regularly. The right pressure is important for traction and fuel efficiency.

CAA recommends a good set of winter tires as the rubber compound in winter tires allows for better traction and control.

How is data collected

By Calvin Daniels Research studies always seem to be interesting in what they unearth, and also leave you wondering exactly how the data was collected.

Survey data is generally accumulated off the responses of people to a series of questions. As someone in media, I am aware questions are not all created equal. They can be phrased to illicit certain responses, or they can simply be ambiguous enough that the answers are generic enough to be open to interpretation.

So whenever I see a survey with somewhat surprising results, at least in my mind, I run through questions in my head regarding the validity of the results.

The first step is to look at who did the research, and unlike some, I still hold a trust of academic institutions.

So the latest Food Price Report from the University of Guelph and Dalhousie University is a survey

that should have merit in its results.

And that is what is surprising here, and had me writing this column.

The data mined in the survey are suggesting Canadians are showing increased interest in reducing meat consumption, while increasing their purchases of plant-based proteins, which would naturally seem to go hand-in-hand. If you eat less meat you typically have to look to plant-based sources for your protein.

My first response to this was that consumers are making a decision based on their pocketbooks, and meat is a high cost item in the grocery cart.

While I appreciate there are those who peruse ingredient lists and make choices without worrying about the price tag, there is a reason store shelves are lined with low-cost options, because there are those where price is the only factor considered when making a purchase. Many Canadians simply do not have the income to look at food options with higher costs.

The university report did suggest an increase of 1.5 to 3.5 per cent in the average Canadian food bill in 2019, the lower end being modest as production costs always seem to rise because of utilities, wages and taxes. The report also noted at the upper end of the potential increase a family of four would see their food bill rise about $400.

With that in mind I had expected prices to be why Canadians were suggesting a move away from meat.

However the report suggests vegetable prices are likely to increase, while meat is forecast to decline.

It will be interesting to watch this play out to see if Canadians are merely curious about plant-based proteins as a current ‘hot’ consumer topic, and will try it and then filter back to more familiar meat sources, or if this is a true cultural change in terms of what we eat?

Combines lose to Oil Kings

By Laura Kish The KW Oil Kings welcomed the Arcola Combines to town on Saturday, Dec. 8 to a large crowd at the Kipling Arena. Period one saw one tripping penalty handed out to the Oil Kings and their first and second goals scored by James Schaeffer, assisted by Josh Hassler; and Matt Bean with assists going to James Schaeffer and Carson Harcourt.

Arcola’s lone goal was scored by Lucas Hislop, assisted by Carter Birch and Rhett Palmer.

Period one ended with the Oil Kings ahead 2-1.

Three penalties were handed out in the second period, a roughing penalty to the Oil Kings and interference and roughing penalties to the Combines.

The Oil Kings kept their lead in the second period and added two more goals – one by Caley Bjork, assisted by Josh Hassler and the second

by Carson Harcourt unassisted. Arcola also added another goal, this time by Hayden Cutler unassisted, ending the second with a score of 4-2.

Each team was handed a penalty in the third, the Oil Kings with a goal interference and the Combines with a 10 min misconduct.

Maryfield VIlla News Submitted by Janet Mark The Villa Christmas Party involved the Maryfield School children and teachers from Grades 1 – 5. They were bussed over to sing action songs. Bob Darroch and members of the United Church led in songs and skits, and Santa gave each resident a gift. Other visitors this week included Lauren Cowie of Okotoks, AB with Fred; and Sherry Wilson with Mildred and Ruth. Thank you to the donor of the big poinsetta.

The Circle of Friends this week remembered Grandparents. Ralph Mills’ grandma was sick in bed with a bad heart, and “Grandfather lived with us for quite some time.”

Ruth’s paternal grandfather lived a mile away and was “kind of sickly”.

Grace and Aileen had grandparents who lived in Ontario, who only

sent cards. Ruth Holmstrom’s grandpa lived 3 miles away and walked to visit them. Leora’s came 75 miles by horse and buggy, and brought treats. Jessie remembered the geraniums and fruit trees where her grandmother stayed with an uncle. At her funeral the congregation was storm stayed in the church.

Freda’s grandfather, from North Dakota was tall and British. She and the grandchildren took their second names of their grandmothers: Kezia. Fred’s grandma talked in rhymes. Marianne’s was young in heart, kept up with to date, with lots of news and lived to be 97.

Janet’s Ontario grandmother visited them. She lived in the Dower House at the farm; built for aging grandparents when the family got too noisy. She

played bridge and saw her 100th birthday. The Saskatchewan grandmother took the wee ones for a walk, picking up sticks in her apron for kindling. She developed Alzheimers and there was no care available except Weyburn Mental Hospital. Her daughter ( a nurse), found a small shack in Tyvan; with water but no insulation (1940), power or phone; and nursed her through a broken hip.

Great Grandchildren take priority. Lois and Ed Humeniuk decided it is time to enjoy their grandchildren; so Lois is retiring from the Villa staff. She has worked 9 years here; the last one as part time cook and has been one of the caretakers of the Villa flower garden. She baked one last batch of her famous sticky buns, a highlight of Villa celebrations.

What do I give?

By Linda Wegner Now that Christmas is just days ahead, last minute gift ideas are becoming a matter of priority. The out-of-province deliveries were mailed early, prompted by the then looming postal strike but now I’m wrestling with these last few but important decisions. By mutual agreement, spending limits are already set so that’s not the issue; rather, it’s significance to the recipient that matters.

Choosing gifts for family and friends challenges me so much that I decided to do some research. From reading and chatting with others I gleaned these excellent tips and I share them with you, just in case I’m not alone in this

dilemma.

First thing on the list: be well acquainted with the person’s interests and, I would add, their needs. Another comment regarding this: surprising someone with something they wouldn’t justify buying for themselves can be a wonderful treat. Just keep that pre-set budget in mind. (It helps ensure that you don’t dread January.)

Next: don’t be afraid to ask for advice; or, why not take someone with you when you shop.

Be it choosing a gift or sticking to a budget, the task’s even more enjoyable when you’re with a friend.

Third, be creative when wrapping those

Five unique holiday gift-wrapping ideas W r a p p i n g Christmas presents often feels like a chore, but it doesn’t have to. With a little creativity, you can make gift-wrapping fun — not to mention cheaper and more eco-friendly. Here are a few gift-wrapping ideas to inspire you.

1. Use recycled materials as giftwrap. Wrap your gifts in recycled household items such as old newspapers and magazines, discarded maps, left over wallpaper and even gently worn clothes.

How to take great photos on Christmas morning One of the best parts of Christmas morning is watching your kids — or grandkids — open their gifts. It’s a magical moment to experience but also to preserve. Here are some great tips for capturing those special moments this Christmas.

Be prepared Get your camera or phone ready beforehand.

On Christmas eve, take a moment to make sure that the battery is charged and that you have enough memory available for new photos. Get the room you’ll be spending Christmas morning in ready too. Make sure you’re happy with the decor and that the lighting is suitable for taking pictures. As a rule, try to have as much natural light as possible.

Be in the right place The little ones will probably be down on the floor as they open their gifts. You might want to follow suit. To get the best photo of that awestruck or beaming face, make sure the camera lens is level to it.

Bonus tip: if you want to best capture the dramatic moment when your kids first enter the room and see the gifts under the tree, position yourself beside it so that you can photograph their faces.

Light up the world... it’s Christmas!

Tell a story The moment when your kid sees their new toy might be the climax, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. Get pictures of them curiously weighing a wrapped box, trying on the sweater

they discover inside and hugging grandma to thank her for the gift. Not only are these photos wonderful on their own, but they also tell a great story when placed side by side.

Two cute Christmas crafts to make with your kids

If you have time off during the holiday season, make the most of it by making one — or both! — of these cute crafts with your family.

1. Appreciation garland Show your family how much you care about them by hanging an appreciation garland where everybody can see it.

Here’s how to do it: write something you love about each family member on note cards. Attach them to a string of red and white bakers twine with clothespins, along with other seasonal decorations.

If you’re hosting this year, you can give your guests blank note cards so they can write their own notes of appreciation.

2. DIY snow globe If you have small plastic tree ornaments that have lost their hooks, and some empty clear glass jars, use them to make snow globes.

Here’s how to do it: using waterproof superglue, adhere the ornament to the lid of the jar, and allow it to dry completely. Fill the jar with water, a couple of drops of glycerine — which can be found in most drugstores — and as much glitter as you’d like. Close the jar tightly, turn it upside down and give it a shake.

You can use any plastic object in a snow globe; if the kids have figurines they want to use, feel free to incorporate them.

Be sure to mark the date on your finished crafts. They’re almost certain to become family keepsakes that you’ll want to put on display at Christmas or keep as mementos for years to come.

Easier than the whole thing

Easier than roasting a whole turkey but just as delicious, this recipe makes a perfect holiday meal.

Start to finish: 1 hour (30 minutes active) Servings: 4 Ingredients • 50 grams dried wild mushrooms • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 French shallot, finely chopped • 50 grams pancetta, cubed • 150 grams button mushrooms, minced

• 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, one finely chopped • 2 turkey breasts • 4 large slices Swiss cheese Directions 1. Preheat oven to 375 °F (190 °C).

2. Following the package instructions, rehydrate the wild mushrooms. Lightly dry them with a paper towel and then chop.

Set aside.

3. In a pan, melt the butter over medium heat and sauté the

French shallots and pancetta for about 3 minutes.

4. Add the button mushrooms, wild mushrooms and chopped rosemary.

Continue to cook for 2 more minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

5. Butterfly both turkey breasts (cut lengthwise, but not all the way through, so they open like a book).

Cover each breast with plastic wrap, and pound with a meat

tenderizer until uniformly flat.

6. Remove the plastic wrap, and cover the surface of each breast with slices of Swiss cheese.

7. Spread the pancetta and mushroom mixture evenly over the cheese.

8. Carefully roll each breast, making sure to keep the stuffing in. Wrap with kitchen twine to keep closed.

9. In an oven-safe pan, sear the rolls so all sides are browned.

Cover and finish cooking in the oven for about 30 minutes, or until a meat thermometer shows an internal temperature of 160 °F (72 °C).

10. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Serve on a bed of roasted potatoes and garnish with the remaining sprig of rosemary.
