Moe’s ideas need further reflection

By Murray Mandryk One gets the burning desire in Western Canada, and particularly in rural Saskatchewan, to send Ottawa loud message it can’t ignore.

One can even understand the need the need to hit Ottawa and/or the federal Liberal where it hurts the most, politically speaking.

But in our zeal to send a loud message to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, maybe it would be smart to slow down a bit and put some thought towards how we should approach matters. The last thing we need to do is something that actually hurts ourselves.

That would seem the wise approach for Premier Scott Moe and his Saskatchewan Party government as it floats out the notions of this province having its own tax collection system and immigration policies.

Perhaps they don’t sound like the worst ideas a government has ever come up with.

This government’s stated goal of the Moe government to grow the province by 100,000 jobs and to 1.4 million people (roughly adding 225,538 people) by 2030.

Meeting these lofty and noble goals will require policy nimbleness. After all, the lion’s share of the 170,000 additional people in Saskatchewan in the past 14 years have been due to new Canadians, the result of a solid immigration investment program put in place by the former NDP government and wisely kept and nurtured by the current Sask. Party government.

For this reason, one gets why the provincial government would want more control on how it developments its immigration attraction policies. And given that there is a precedent for what Moe is proposing, getting more control from Ottawa make that much more sense.

“We have the template in Quebec that we can replicate here in Saskatchewan,” Moe told reporters.

“Essentially what the province of Quebec has.”

Quebec has managed to get special dispensation from the federal government so that it can put forward its own plans for immigration that are based on economic, family and humanitarian considerations.

Perhaps on a similar vein, Moe also spoke of his idea in the “very preliminary” stage for the province to collect its own income tax, an idea similar to the one what United Conservative Party Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is now contemplating.

But maybe it’s about here where we should reflect on whether these are good ideas are in our best interests or something we just doing to make a costly point.

As a political strategy, neither collecting our own taxes nor having significantly more control over our own immigration hits Ottawa very hard.

Or at least, it certainly wouldn’t have the same impact as Alberta suggesting of opting out of the Canada Pension Plan in favour of an Alberta program similar to the Quebec Pension Plan. (Although that notion has a whole series of other areas of potential pitfalls for this or any other government venturing into the dangers of running its own investment fund.)

What it would most certainly do, however, is burden Saskatchewan taxpayers with having to fill out two tax forms like they do in Quebec. It would also burden taxpayers with setting up a whole other bureaucracy when governments are trying to find ways to cut costs and red tape.

Similarly, monitoring more immigration and investment would also require additional provincial resources. And more monitoring would clearly be needed.

Just take a look at some of the problems at Regina’s Global Transportation Hub with the Global Trade and Exhibition Centre, where Chinese investors are making serious allegations about what’s happened to their investment. It could get messy, with the government caught in the line of fire.

It’s great to consider new ideas and talk about more autonomy.

But we do need to take a serious look at whether these notions are really and truly in our best interests.

There is no chance of cancelling this Seven years ago Hurricane Sandy slammed the northeastern United States, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and was called the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of 2012. As the massive cleanup and attempt to rebuild homes and community carried through into the month of December, 45% of those surveyed living in My Outlook Shelley Luedtke the northeastern States said they wished they could cancel Christmas. There was too much to fix, too much recovery that needed to happen and there wasn’t time or energy for Christmas.

I remember the year I wanted to cancel Christmas. I was 18 years old and had just finished my first semester at university. My anticipation in heading home and being part of the family celebration took a shocking turn when my father had a heart attack and was suddenly gone.

Pain and grief feel the same no matter what day of the year it is. If my father had died on March 11 or July 29 it would have resulted in the same painful ache, but losing him just days before Christmas seemed to magnify the reality that as families all around our community were gathering for holiday celebrations--our family was forever changed.

The event I most look forward to at Christmas was, and still is, the Christmas Eve service, but that Christmas I didn’t want to go. You see, my dad was the pastor and I couldn’t imagine walking into the church and not seeing him at the front leading the service. But at the very last moment my sister and I decided we would go, so our grandpa lovingly accompanied us while my grandma remained at home with our mom. Knowing the church would be packed, our thought was we could squeeze in unnoticed at the back, or perhaps even head up to the balcony unseen. But that was not to be. An usher met us at the door and said he’d saved seats for us in case we decided to come. He then put his arm around my shoulders, walked us down the aisle, and seated us in the front row. The front row! So much for unseen

or unnoticed. But as I sat through that service, admittedly much of it in tears, I was part of the congregation of people who were there to worship; to worship the baby born to be the Savior. So much of that Christmas was bitterly painful, but as much as I might have wished Christmas wouldn’t have come, it is the very reason we need Christmas. But the right Christmas. The true Christmas.

We attach so much to our celebration that is not needed and frankly, rather perplexing. Stressmas has replaced anticipation for far too many. If all the right trappings aren’t presented to all the right people it can make us feel it just doesn’t measure up.

Our quest for abundance has taken away the unique wonder and expectancy of Christmas.

In the Dr. Seuss seasonal classic, the Grinch discovers that despite all his efforts to stop it, he can’t keep Christmas from coming but instead muses, “Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”

Actually, a whole lot more.

More than 2000 years ago Mary and Joseph were away from home; preparing for the birth of a baby; separated from family; taking shelter in the only place available to them. Yet in the intervening years we have aggrandized our notions of celebration to such an extent we think there needs to be containers full of baking in the freezer, an abundance of gifts under the tree, ornate decorations decking the halls, and luxurious linens on the guest beds. Such a far cry from the humbleness…and purpose…of that first Christmas, and no wonder some people feel defeated by the time and energy this all takes.

Death, natural disaster, tragedy, disease and any other event we experience is painful on whatever day of the year it may come. So thank goodness for Christmas. Christmas is hope. Christmas is healing…and humility. Christmas is the birth of the Savior and I am so thankful there is no chance of cancelling that.

Joy to the world! The Lord is come.

That’s my outlook.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • Years ago when it got real cold Police Officers would often go for what was known as “Popsicle Patrol” This was before the cell phone and Internet. Yes, I am “experienced”, okay “old” might be a more frequently used term. Let us just say I have been around the block and remember Policing when everyone did not have a phone attached to their ear. What the Police would do during cold shifts was drive frequent routes individuals may walk and ensure they made it to where they were going. With technology we get many calls for service where someone sees someone walking out in the cold and we make a patrol to check on their safety or someone calls us to say someone has left a residence and there is fear they may not get to where they are going because of their intoxicated state. All we ask is if you call because someone you care about is out in the cold please call us if you find them or they return so we don’t waste our time looking for someone who is found.

• It was a weekend of partnerships for us. SGI has a program where they provide extra funding to conduct “checkstops” and targeted enforcement programs. We took advantage of this program over the past weekend and we had Members of our Detachment, Estevan Detachment and our Traffic Units conduct extra patrols. Unfortunately, we had more success than we had hoped. We stopped a semi for failing to stop at a stop sign and subsequently arrested the driver for impaired operations and obtained samples of breath with results of 120/110 mg%. Another individual was located driving without headlights and was arrested for impaired operation and provided samples of 170/150 mg%. Finally we had a third charged for operating while impaired after providing samples of 110/100 mg%. A further individual obtained a 60-day licence suspension being they were a graduated driver and were not permitted to have any alcohol in their system. Added

to all this enforcement our partners in conservation also picked up an impaired driver, which was a total of four impaired drivers in one weekend. Added to this we had an individual arrested earlier in the week, yes another “day drinker” that refused to provide a sample of their breath.

• Although we did not get a report of a fraud reported to us this week, wait we did, see you can’t believe everyone or everything you read. We wish to remind everyone that bank employees, RCMP, Canada Revenue Agency representatives and other officials will never ask for payment via Bitcoin, gift cards or through money transfer services. In addition if you get an e-mail or text stating you are getting a refund, you are not. Unfortunately if it sounds like it is too good to be true it is.

• It is the Christmas Season and for some it is difficult for many reasons. Please take the time to check in on your loved ones and friends and if you have concerns follow up on those concerns.

First and foremost, block them so they can’t send you messages. Secondly just because you are bothered does not mean you are criminally harassed, especially if you just need to block their number.

• While delivering “Meals on Wheels” a Member and Detachment Service Assistant were diverted to a call for service. They dealt with the call until further members arrived and then carried on with the

delivering of the “Meals on Wheels” Even if we wanted to arrest the one individual we could not risk the chance that the individual would snack on the meals being transported in the back seat. No arrest was required and members calmed both individuals before departing.

• An individual called 911 to report a possible confrontation between two individuals at a residence. The caller reported they were scared, but would not identify the individual that was causing them to be fearful. Members made a patrol and provided the possible subject of concern a ride elsewhere being they advised they did not want to be at the residence anymore. We never did determine if something happened, was going to happen, or could have happened but we did separate the two that may have been in conflict. Everyone including the Police were happy with the resolution of the event.

• Members responded to a call of someone walking around a residence. The caller could not see anyone, however, did have a dog outside. The dog was not barking and nobody was found.

• Our Forensic Identification Section obtained a fingerprint from a crime scene from last year and we are now following up to determine if our suspect should have ever been where the print was found.

Our investigation continues.

• An individual was arrested, being they could not seem to comply with the conditions of the Conditional Sentence Order. We assisted in arresting and then transporting this subject to Estevan Court.

• An individual called to advise another individual was breaching their release conditions. A patrol and investigation determined there was no breach and beyond trying to get someone in trouble for something they did not do, well, we may not believe this person as much in the future.

• I would like to say we had no false alarms this week. I can’t say it though being we had several.

• Members issued approximately 20 tickets and 40 warnings over the last week.

• Tickets were issued for fail to stop at stop sign - $230, no insurance - $580, fail to produce drivers licence - $100, fail to produce

registration - $100, no drivers licence $150, fail to comply with licence endorsement or restriction - $150, window tint $115, cell phone - $280, fail to wear seatbelt $175, exceed 60 km/hr when passing stopped emergency vehicle $546 and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $210.

• Warnings were issued for having liquor in a vehicle, stop sign violation, fail to produce registration, fail to produce drivers licence, fail to wear a seatbelt, obstructed licence plate, inadequate headlamps, fail to comply with li-

cence endorsements, window tint, inadequate windshield, brake lights fail to emit red light, inadequate muffler, fail to complete daily log, fail to display temporary registration permit, and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate windshield, inadequate daytime running lights, window tint, confirm air bags function, confirm steering wheel is approved, inadequate exhaust or muffler, inadequate tail lights, install mudflaps, and install cover on auxiliary lamps above headlamps.

These past few weeks the words of those familiar but ancient Christmas carols have invited me to think far beyond the hubbub that can come with the Christmas season. I assume that a good percentage of people living in North America (and even beyond) are at least aware of the story of Mary, Joseph and the baby in the manger. I’ve heard

it and, I am quick to say that I believe it, but it’s far too easy to take it for granted.

After I decided to use these carols as a basis for this year’s December articles, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and praying that I would gain a fresh insight into the meaning of them and their application to my personal life. Hopefully you will find them applicable to yours, as well.

tion to those who either currently profess Christ and those who, hopefully, will some day do the same. Come. It’s a voluntary journey to meet Him. Even as we muse on Mary’s divine conception, there is an awe that He would come to us. That God would love us so much. Us. Me. Why then am I to come to Him? He’s calling to all, not to just one person or to any exclusive group, to come. Faithfulness is essential if we are to find peace in our lives because as we learn to trust more, we will see Him more clearly in every circumstance. We can come confused but let’s not allow that to stop us from coming.

Finally, we are to come purposefully. I won’t say much but ask yourself this: as we gather to worship, is my heart focused on Him alone or are negative emotions such as anger or bitterness, hindering our view?

“Come…let us adore Him!”

It must have been a quiet week for everyone, as I received no news so I have to wing it again this week, sorry folks. Other than for the curling on the television it was a quiet week for me too. Oh I did get my Christmas shopping done (except for one or two) as I made a trip to Estevan on Saturday to finish the job. Now the job of wrapping comes, although that’s not too bad when one uses those gift bags, but it still takes time. You know I do believe that I will be able to say that I am actually going to be ready for Christmas this year. Hope your days are moving along on time.

On Sunday, December 15 it was the annual Alida Old Fashioned Christmas at the hall. The Memorial Candle Lighting ceremony opened the program. This is always a beautiful moment to reflect and remember those who are no longer with us. The crowd may have been small but for those who attended they did appreciate and enjoyed the festive music that was presented by those who participated and they all did a very good job. Beautiful singing by everyone and great performance on the musical instruments as well – really enjoyed it. The traditional and favorite visitor of this season also took time to stop by and hand out treat bags to the little ones. There were also pictures taken with Santa. The evening ended with a lunch of hot chocolate and cookies. The adults

enjoyed their visiting and the young people all took to the stage to have a free for all sing-a-long of their own favorite songs. The food bank donations were generous and will be presented to a needy family in the area. Hope everyone will have a great Holiday season.

As for the curling – it was the Pinty’s National Grand Slam which began on Dec. 12 and ran until the 15th with the finals being played. The Men’s final playoff was between Team Edin (Sweden) and Team Jacobs (NO) with Team Jacobs coming out on top winning the Pinty’s cup. In the Women’s final playoff had Team Jones (MB) against Team Hasselborg (Sweden) and Team Hasselborg came out the winner of the cup. There was lots of great curling and close games so great to watch too keep ones interest.

I can hardly wait until the next curling event comes on, even if one has to wait for the New Year.

Just a reminder – that it’s early deadlines for news now – 1st is on Wednesday 18th for the Dec. 27 issue and the again on Thursday 19th for the January 3 issue. This may mean that I won’t have much news, as really the Christmas news will actually only have happened after these deadlines, oh well I will still try my best in typing up something, even if it’s only a greeting. Joyce Gillies, Fred and Mariann, Leora Thiessen, Ralph Burke and Janet Mark enjoyed the Spirit of Christmas concert at the Associated Gospel Church. The Ladies Choir came to the Villa Monday night to repeat their choruses and lead us in carols.

The Sinclair, MB choir were here Sunday afternoon, after singing in Redvers.

Several of the Circle of Friends singers went with their drivers to visit at Redvers Care Home.

Aileen Belva, Marguerite Perreaux and Jean Vreys are former Villa residents. Jean has just celebrated her 104th birthday there, with Adrianne, her daughter.

Ralph Burke, Vice Chairperson of the Tenants Association, conducted the December meeting.

Janet Mark tendered her resignation, but hopes to continue as long as she can see as reporter.

Circle of Friends last week told of storms.

The Big One in ’47 saw snow so deep that Clifford climbed out the 2nd storey windows. That was the one that stuck the train between Weyburn and Stoughton. Marie was stranded in Fairlight. That year Eunice could stand on the drift and reach the telephone wires; Fred told of needing two tractors, four horses and all the people with shovels, to pull out a friend’s tractor with the plough on it. Joan told of a neighbor who got stuck and walked to their house. When the temperature dropped and the light snow blew away his footprints remained, as if he had been walking on stilts; Ralph Mills’ neighbor got stuck when his transmission failed. He walked four miles at -30. When Ralph pulled him home the temperature had climbed to plus 30 degrees. Carol told how the orphanage in Prince Albert burned and the children had to go down the metal fire escape in bare feet. Margaret lived on a dairy farm, where the milk tests had to be done every morning for TB. Grace lived two miles from town school. They went at -40, and the roads were never ploughed. When a noon storm hit the town Doris’ family went next door. The mother was covered with snow when she opened the door. Leora sang all the way to the Christmas program. Heather Ludlum spoke of the worst storm -50 at the end of March, just before she was married. Pastor Alex, who was born in Mexico, has been struck in awe by the difference. -50 here compared to the +50 in Mexico.

Redvers Winterfest warms up the season

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Town of Redvers was host to its annual Winterfest on Saturday, December 14.

The one-day winter festival is a family-focused celebration that has something for everyone, no matter their age.

The day started off with a pancake breakfast at the Redvers Rec. Centre from 7:30 am to 10:00 am.

The Golden Age Centre was the headquarters for most registrations and many of the day’s activities. There was a town-wide scavenger hunt, horse drawn sleigh rides, a parade and a “fun curl”, to mention a few of the day’s 27 scheduled events. All ac-

tivities were free for the kids, as well most were no charge for adults.

The Optimist Eatery and Café featured live music all day beginning at 10:30 am. The musical performers booked were Erin Brown and Kathy Kyle from Oxbow, Aaron James from Maryfield and local artist Brooke Ewert.

Redvers School hosted a matinee showing of the “Grinch”, as well as photos with Santa in the morning and afternoon.

The Legion Hall was a hub of activity featuring a craft and trade show. There were twenty-six tables with lots of great stuff for Christmas presents, everything from carved

antlers, jewelry, pottery, home made soaps and beauty products. The craft show vendors were up in numbers substantially from the previous year and sales were brisk.

The Golden Age Centre [GAC] was host to many of the day’s events, with the Creative Canvas producing a good turnout. It was instructed by Chylisse Marchand. Also at the GAC, was a Christmas Lego display, Rice Crispy sculptures and Christmas ornaments crafts.

The day was a cool one weatherwise and featured an early evening bonfire, to take the chill off, appropriately put on by the Redvers Fire Department. They served a delicious pulled pork supper, as well there was an adult hot chocolate booth close by for some added warmth.

The Winterfest committee consists of Christina Birch, Melissa Toms and Courtney Gavelin. This is its third year and despite the cold temperatures it was a hub of activity with over a thousand people attending.

“Our committee focuses on providing family fun that is of no cost for those in attendance”, said Birch.

“We are very appreciative of the support we receive from the community.

O u r festival wouldn’t have evolved to where it is today without the support from our business community, non-profit organizations, and local residents. Whether it is through sponsorship or by hosting an activity, we couldn’t do this without them.”

Pause for Reflection

The mystery and the Spirit of Christmas Just as the birth of Jesus brought us life, Christmas brings stories of birth and love.

“Help me! Please. My baby.” A woman takes shelter under a bridge as snow falls. If only she could reach the missionary’s house.

“She takes off her own clothes, wraps them around the baby and holds him close in the warm circle of her arms.”

Next day the missionary finds the young mother frozen to death. He lifts the baby tenderly out of her arms. When the boy is ten his adoptive father tells him the story of his mother’s death on Christmas Eve. The young boy cries, realizing the sacrifice his mother had made for him.

The next morning the boy’s bed was empty. The missionary followed small footprints in the snow back to the bridge where the young mother had died.

Kneeling in the snow is his son, naked and shivering uncontrollably. His clothes lie beside him in

a small pile. Moving closer, he hears the boy say through chattering teeth, “Mother, were you this cold for me?” (Korea 1952 - Internet source).

As a child I sat in church, fascinated, staring at the creche. The story of the shepherds and the three kings unfolded under the star as light streamed down, and loved ones sang “Stille Nacht”.

St Francis of Assisi invited the people of his time back to the message of Christ by re-creating the scene of Christ’s birth. He used a full-sized barn with real animals and all that goes with them; the hay and the manger, raised off the ground soiled with animal hoofs and manure.

The simplicity and poverty of it all astounds us.

Can we imagine a God wanting so much to love us that he was born in a stable, humble and poor? Maybe that is why we can more easily relate to God at Christmas time. We can come back to church, back to grace, and feel the love.

Common sense and balance required

By Calvin Daniels Rules, regulations and red tape are often seen as the roadblocks of progress by those with innovative ideas and products.

The same rules, regulations and red tape are also the safeguards which exist to protect people and the world around us.

However, as in all things, common sense and balance are required.

The challenge is determining where the line of balance is, and then maintaining the flexibility to adjust that line as needed.

That flexibility, if it exists, is of course being put to the test these days as new innovation and scientific advancement is emerging at startling speeds.

In the farm sector that is certainly the case as science is making huge strides in terms of just about every aspect of production. Those steps include advancements in plant breeding techniques that are allowing new varieties to come to production much more rapidly, which is a good thing, if the techniques used are well-understood and the regulations reasonable to deal with.

That said, it is rather clear at present a growing segment of the population sees science as a near ‘dark art’ that they increasingly fear. We have seen that manifest itself in areas such as those shunning child vaccinations against disease which once killed thousands, and on the farm the shudder the term genetically modified crop sends through many.

It is somewhat understandable that today’s science is beyond the ability of many of us to fully understand, although I suspect that has always been the case. When something is not easily understood it is easier to fear it.

The difference today of course is that the fear is often made worse by the deluge of information available at our fingertips. Often reports that are suggested as cold hard facts conflict with other reports also deemed equally factual.

And, then there are the deluge of half-truths, rumours, opinions and outright fabrications that float nebulously around social media

muddying the water in terms of actually knowing if a new science is good, or bad.

That is why we need well-established regulations, because there needs to be processes in place to determine safety for those things the public is generally not qualified to fully understand.

That does not mean however that such processes should be barriers

to new developments.

In terms of agriculture there is a constant need for new varieties, better crop protection products, better fertilizers, simply better everything to allow producers to stay competitive with farmers around the world, and to increase production in the face of a growing population.

That is where the balance is required.

Christmas. Father Brendan McGuire said, “They are all the face of Christ. Every one of them. Here is the most important thing; it means every one of us has the divine seed within us.

“The reason Christ became one of us is for us to know that. He took on the most human condition so that we could know that we are of divine condition.” (from “Creche – The Poverty of Christ”).

McGuire points out that God came in poverty so the most broken, the most vulnerable and those who in our minds are the furthest away from God are the object of God’s love. God says, “You are the image of me. I made you.”

“Those who are broken among us; those who have been wounded; those who have been abused; … who have experienced pain and suffering,” McGuire says, “most especially to you, God is coming and saying to you today: I loved you, I love you, and I will always love you because I created you.

“Nothing will ever separate you from me. No illness. No wound. No brokenness. Nothing that you have ever done or what anyone else has ever done to you, can ever separate you from my love. Not even death can separate you from my love.”

“Fear not. I have redeemed you.” (Isaiah 43:1).

Only three Cougar games left in 2019 Nicole Currie Sports Contributor Friday, the 13th was a busy night at the Carlyle Sports Arena. The Cougars were hosting the Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings, collecting donations for the Carlyle and District Food Bank, as well as having a Teddy Bear toss! It was a great crowd once again at the arena and the lucky winner of the 50/50, took home $388.

It was a win for the Cougars, as they scored three goals in each period, while the Oil Kings

scored their two goals in the game with under 5 minutes left in the 3rd period. McGonigal, scored a goal in each period and had 2 assists. Turgeon netted 2 and also had 2 assists.

Johnstone had a 3 point night with 2 goals and 1 assist. Tyler Matthewson scored 1 and also got a helper. Greenwood scored in the 2nd for the Cougars and the other players getting credited for assists were: J. Matthewson, Struthers, Brown, Liboirion, S. Matthewson, Geiger

with 3 and Currie with 1.

Special thank you to everyone who came to the game, donated food items and threw stuffed animals out after the first period. Both worthy causes that we will continue to support.

A special thank you to: Brityn Baker, Jaiden Riddell, Makenna Slykhuis and Logan Procyk, who went on the ice to collect all of the stuffies.

On Dec. 15 the Cougars headed to Redvers to take on the Rockets in a hard fought battle.

Redvers Rockets hosted the Cougars on Dec. 15 and were victorious on home ice, skating to a 6-5 win.

It was a physical match and both goalies stood on their heads, as they were pelted with shots. I wish they had kept track of the shots, as they would have been close and a lot. The Miller connection opened the scoring for the Rockets and it was 1-0 at the end of the first. Johnstone was awarded a penalty shot and their goalie got his foot out just at the right time to make the save, unfortunately for the Blue and White.

The ref’s hand was up and the Cougars were going to get a penalty, when they passed a puck that slowly slid right into their net. We’re on the board just one minute into the second. Not pretty, but we’ll take it and Turgeon gets the credit. Redvers scored 3 this period, taking advantage of a powerplay or two and then Struthers decided to take advantage of a Cougar powerplay and sniped one in to end the second at 4-2.

Onto the third and Struthers strikes first, scoring in just the first 2½ minutes. It was back and forth play with Redvers scoring with just under 28 seconds left on their powerplay. Rose made it a 5-4 game with 7 minutes left. Redvers gained a two-goal lead again with

Carlyle Legion makes numerous presentations

By Kelly Johnson The Observer On Wednesday, December 11 the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #248 held its Christmas Party and meeting. The night featured a presentation of funds to different charities and a potluck turkey supper.

President Nedra Clark called on Wendy Rounce to say Grace.

At the end of a delicious meal, the Legion presented cheques to three very worthy organizations. The funds were raised through the Legion’s Poppy Trust Fund Campaign in November.

The first presenta-

tion was to STARS Ambulance in the Amount of $5,200. Tammy Beauregard from STARS Regina graciously accepted the donation. Also on hand from STARS was Ryan Gobeil.

Next up was Moose Mountain Lodge which received a cheque for “wound care” in the amount of $3,200. Accepting this cheque was Candy Bye and Danielle Benjamin.

The final cheque of $500, which will be matched by Nutrien, was presented to Theresa Leudtke for the Carlyle and District Food Bank.

Also on hand this night was Dianne Twietmeyer

of the Cornerstone Theatre who presented a cheque in the amount of 1,237.80 to the Carlyle and Area Food Bank.

The evening was finished off with a regular meeting of the Legion.

Legion Branch #248 in Carlyle is in it’s 74th year and currently has 38 members. The Legion first met in the Memorial Hall which was destroyed by fire and then met in the present day hall until it took it’s home at it 319-5th Street West in Carlyle.

This building used to be the Carleton Junction School, which was moved to Carlyle from south of the community.

Last Monday evening the Wawota Lions served their 51st supper to the seniors. This is always a special night for all. The setting is festive and the Lions all dressed up! The meal and the fellowship are always great! The Museum Santa’s Surprises were won by Beth Latham and Tom Dorrance.

Seven members of the Wawota Library met at the Village Inn on Dec. 9. They discussed the latest book they had read, “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” by Heather Morris. All in attendance had enjoyed the book. It is the story of a Jew, Lale Sokolov sent to the concentration camp. He speaks several languages and becomes the tattooist for the camp. He also meets his wife there. He witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism but also acts of bravery and compassion.

Linda Klimm (administrator of Wawken) and her daughter Annekke have moved to Wilcox, SK. And Sara Romeril (Deb Saville’s niece) has moved back home to Lethbridge, AB. We appreciated both of their participation in our town’s activities and wish them well in their new surroundings.

man from India was working on clearing the plastic from the ocean, someone else started an art school for those suffering from AIDS, another was buying RVs and giving them to those who had lost their homes in fires and floods and a 12-year-old was making up packages of toiletries for the homeless.

It was truly uplifting and shows that everyone can make a difference.

Ken and Lisa (Myers) Hall were in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico earlier in the month for a destination wedding. It was held at Barcelo Hotel on Dec. 9.

They had had an intimate ceremony in Mississauga in October. Several family and friends were there including, Ken and Monique Myers, Steven Myers, Mallory Olson (bridesmaid) of Estevan, Janelle Krupa and Dwayne and Linda Bannister of Calgary.

Jake Lamoureaux flew to San Francisco last week where he met up with his friend, Gary Lapointe. They drove to Oakland and attended the Oakland raiders football game against Jacksonville. They also toured Alcatraz.

Reverend Ronald Harvey Sutton Reverend Ronald Harvey Sutton passed away Monday, December 9, 2019 with his family by his side and 23rd Psalm guiding his way to Heaven. Ron suffered from Alzheimer’s in his last years and was well cared for and loved by at the Regina Lutheran Home. He was predeceased by his sister Shirley, son Keith, father Lorne, and mother Hilda.

Ron served as a Minister in the United Church of Canada for forty one years, as a Chaplin in the Canadian Armed Forces for nine years and later the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a life member of the Masons and a proud member of the Shriners, active in the United Church Summer Camps, Saskatchewan Roughrider Pep Band and the Sons of Scotland. Ron’s memory will forever be cherished by his loving family wife Mary; siblings Stella, Vivian (Gordon), Victor and Doreen, sons Ivan, Dave (Lori), Paul (Donna), Doug; daughters Cathy, Joy, Colleen, Leah (Jason); 14 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. The family are grateful to the Lutheran home for their care of their dad and the family. Gordon F. Kells High School GFK Food Bank Drive Thanks to everyone who supported the annual GFK Food Bank Drive. Donation totals will be reported next week.

The Mosaic Meal (Potluck) will again be held on the last day before the break, Friday, December 20.

Each student is asked to bring enough food for 5 - 6 people according to the grade’s category. The food is to be brought on the Friday, between 11:30 AM and 11:55 AM. Warming up the food at school is not possible, so please bring it ready to serve. The meal starts at noon. The categories are: Grade 7, Chinese food; Grade 8, Mexican food; Grade 9, Italian food; Grade 10, Ukrainian food; Grade 11, appetizers; Grade 12, desserts; Grade 7-12 Filipino students, Filipino food. Please remember to avoid nuts in your meal preparations.

School begins in the New Year on Monday, January 6, 2020.

Fitness club in the high school gym is open to all students and all levels of fitness are welcome. Fitness club runs from September to June every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7:45 – 8:30AM. Get your day started right with some movement!

CAA Saskatchewan home and away from home holiday safety tips Whether you and your family plan to celebrate the holidays at home or away from home, here are some safety tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Home for the Holidays Safety Tips: • Ensure artificial Christmas trees are “fire resistant” and that live trees are always fresh and moist.

Set up live and artificial trees away from fireplaces, heaters, and other heat sources.

• Inspect holiday lights for broken, frayed or loose connections and throw out damaged sets. Turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house. Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into ground fault circuit interrupters.

• Keep decorations away from lights, candles, heaters, fireplaces, etc. Place candles in non-combustible containers and never leave burning candles unattended.

• As you buy your gifts, it’s a safe idea to keep packaging of high-priced items out of sight. Don’t give burglars a shopping list of what they might find in your home. Keep watch for any suspicious behaviour in your neighbourhood and report any questionable observations to the proper authorities.

• Keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children. Do not leave cooking or baking unattended.

• Have the chimney and furnace professionally cleaned and inspected. Ensure that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working.

Away from Home for the Holidays Safety Tips: • Suspend newspaper delivery. Arrange for someone to pick up your mail or contact the service to store it until your return.

• Show discretion on social media, never letting folks know you are away from home.

• Ensure all doors and windows are locked. For sliding doors, use specially designed bars or locks to prevent the door from being lifted out of its track.

• Use timers for lights and possibly the TV or radio.

• Turn off your water supply or have someone enter the home and check on things daily to ensure the pipes are not frozen. (This is a requirement of most insurance policies during the winter months).

• Ask a neighbour to shovel snow around your driveway and sidewalks. Encourage neighbours to use your driveway so it looks like someone is coming and going on a regular basis.

• Consider installing security bars on basement windows especially those shielded from view or in the back of the house.

• Make sure your home insurance is up to date and that it will provide coverage for your belongings. Advise your insurance broker of any changes required for major purchases or renovations.

• CAA Insurance has a Property Inventory Checklist that can be used to create a list of personal belongings along with their replacement value. In the event of a claim, the checklist provides valuable information when settling your claim with an adjustor.

Jetting away for the Holidays Safety Tips: • Check your booked flights frequently. Flight cancellations and delays are likely during peak periods. Also check your flight status prior to driving to the airport.

• Know your airline’s cancellation policy. Some airlines may be waiving fees and issuing changes due to possible rebooking policies.

• Monitor weather conditions – both for the departure and destination cities.

• Don’t forget your travel insurance.

• Make sure your passport is up to date and is valid for time required by the country or countries visited. Make photocopies of your passport, credit cards, etc. and leave a copy at home with family or friends and keep a photocopy with you along with the originals stored in a separate location.

• Pack any medications in their original containers and store in your carry-on bags.

• Weigh your packed luggage to avoid additional airline charges.

Sauce • 1 cup white chocolate chips • 1 or 2 tablespoons milk

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 °F (175 °C).

2. Cover the bottom of an 8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper, letting the edges hang over the side.

3. In a bowl, combine the flour, coconut, cranberries, baking powder

and salt.

4. In another bowl (this one should be microwave safe) place the white chocolate chips and butter and melt them in the microwave for about 30 seconds.

5. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the egg, brown sugar and vanilla on medium speed until the mixture has doubled in volume (about 3 minutes).

6. Add the white chocolate and butter mixture to the egg mixture and mix on slow speed.

Slowly incorporate the dry ingredients until just combined.

7. Pour the batter into the baking dish and

bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out dry.

8. Let cool for about two hours.

9. To make the sauce, melt the white chocolate chips in the microwave (about 30 seconds) with 1 tablespoon of milk. If it’s

too thick, add another tablespoon of milk once the chocolate is melted.

10. Cut the blondies into squares or rectangles and serve with the sauce.

Start to finish: 3 hours (25 minutes active) Servings: 12

A traditional Christmas in the Philippines

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Jogie and Sherlly hail from the Philippines and currently work at Kuzina’s Resto & Grill in Carlyle. Jogie came to the Carlyle area in 2013 and his wife Ellie joined him here in 2015.

They are of the Catholic faith and will celebrate Christmas in Edmonton with friends and family, where they will attend Mass on Christmas Eve and then go to a friend’s place afterwards for festivities. They will enjoy a Christmas drink, play games, sing Karaoke and exchange gifts.

They will feast on pansit (noodles) and menudo, which is a pork stew and a traditional meal for the holidays.

In the Philippines it is common for people to decorate as early as the end of September.

They came to Calgary, AB, Canada 10 years ago and moved to Carlyle recently after purchasing the Food World grocery store.

Jin was raised by Christian parents and Ellie’s family were Buddist. This is their first Christmas in Carlyle and they will celebrate at home on Christmas Day where they will exchange a gift with each other.

Christmas in Korea is typically celebrated as it is here in Canada.

In Korea everyone has a different choice of meal Jin and Ellie will choose fried chicken and all the fixings for their Christmas dinner.

Stairway to Christmas: how to decorate stairs for the holidays The stairway in your house is the perfect place to show off your Christmas spirit. Here’s how to dress up this oft overlooked part of your home.

Decorate the handrail Wrap the handrail with evergreen garlands and decorate them with either berries, pinecones and burlap ribbons for a rustic look, or with Christmas baubles for a more whimsical take. Wrap a string of white or coloured lights around the garlands to add some sparkle.

Alternatively, you can decorate the handrails with ribbons instead of greenery. Depending on the look you want, you can choose to use either one type of ribbon or a mix of different kinds in an assortment of colours and sizes.

Decorate the stairs If they’re wide enough, put decorations directly on the stairs. Pillar candles (battery-operated ones are safest), wooden decorations and festive �igurines can help create the holiday ambience you’re after.

Decorate the walls and ceiling Ask the kids to make paper snow�lakes and use them to decorate the wall along the stairway. You can also display holiday photos from Christmases past. As a �inal touch, consider suspending large ornaments from the ceiling. Make sure to hang them high enough so that no one bumps their head.

Ming Lafiguera is looking forward to celebrating the holidays in Carlyle

Ming La�iguera came to Carlyle from the Philippines with her husband, Roberto in 2012.

She was born in Vietnam to a Vietnamese mother, who is a Buddhist and Philippine father. Vietnam is typically an atheist country, but despite this, there are three religions that are prominent, Taoism Confucianism and Buddhism.

These three faiths are referred to as one religion in Vietnam and are called “tam giao”.

Christmas is not celebrated by Buddhists, yet it is common to prepare traditional Vietnamese dishes of “pho” (soup with noodles) and fresh rolls and offered to those of the Christian faith to go with their celebration.

“Shiver was a young snowman who wore three buttons: a red one, a blue one and a yellow one. One morning, he couldn’t �ind the yellow one and he was very upset. “‘Mom! I can’t �ind my yellow button!’ “‘That’s too bad,’ said his mother. ‘You can wear one of mine, if you’d like.’ She showed him her collection of green and blue buttons. “‘No! I want my yellow one. It’s my favourite button, and I wanted to wear it with my yellow scarf to the Christmas party tonight!’

“Shiver searched everywhere for his missing button. He looked in his ice fort, in his father’s sleigh that he’d used to play Santa Claus and even in his mother’s frost garden where he’d picked ice-candies.

That’s when Flurry, his new neighbour, joined him. “‘What are you looking for?’ she asked. “‘I lost my favou-

rite yellow button! I wanted to wear it to the Christmas party tonight.’ Shiver explained. “‘A yellow button? I found one this morning when I was on my way to the park! There was no one around, so I brought it home to add to my collection.

“When they got to Flurry’s house, she showed Shiver her collection of yellow buttons. There were dozens of them, all different sizes and shapes. Shiver’s beautiful button lay on top.

Overjoyed, he picked it up.

“Seeing how happy Shiver was, Flurry said, ‘You can take two more buttons to wear to the party tonight, if you’d like. Choose whichever ones you want.’

“And that night, Shiver went to the Christmas party alongside his new friend wearing three beautiful yellow buttons that matched his favourite scarf perfectly.”

Frost is so taken with Rudolpha’s story that he goes back to the craft table and gives his snowman three beautiful yellow buttons and a scarf to match.

Amazing Christmas world records Do you love Christmas? If so, you’re not alone.

In fact, every year, the spirit of the season drives holiday enthusiasts to perform impressive feats.

Here are some particularly remarkable Guinness World Records that are on theme.

• Tallest chocolate Santa. Displayed in a mall in Cantù, Italy in 2011, this giant Santa was 5 metres tall, 2.5 metres in diameter and weighed just over 1,700 kilograms. That’s a lot of chocolate!

• Most Christmas lights on a home. In 2014, the Gay family from LaGrangeville, New York decorated their home with over 600,000 individual lights. The display took two months to build and was set to more than 200 different songs, which passersby could hear when tuned in to a special AM radio station.

• Largest arti�icial Christmas tree. Built by the Arjuna Ranatunga Social Services in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2016, this tree measured more than 72 metres high. It was erected during a three-day Christmas carnival and was topped by a 6-metre star.

• Largest Christmas ornament. In 2018, a Christmas ornament more than 4.5 metres in diameter was displayed in Dubai Mall, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Preet Dhillon has been in Canada for three years, Ginni Kang for one year and Vicky Grewal for two.

They are Sikhs from India, all from the Punjab state bordering Pakistan.

All three are employees at the Western Star Hotel in Carlyle.

They were busy setting up a Christmas tree and putting out Christmas decorations in the hotel when I visited them.

In Punjab they do not celebrate Christmas, however they celebrate “Lohri” in January, which is a festival celebrated to mark the end of the peak of winter and the harvest of winter crops.

The people gather for a bon�ire and feast on traditional winter foods. Sarsson da saag is one of the dishes, which is a curry dish made with mustard greens and spiced with ginger and garlic.

Turkey and three cheese lasagna

Wondering what to do with your leftover turkey? This lasagna is a nice departure from endless turkey sandwiches.

Ingredients • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 onions, diced • 2 celery stalks, diced • 2 carrots, diced • 2 (156 millilitres) cans tomato paste • 450 grams leftover turkey, finely chopped (you can use ground tur-

key too) • 2 (796 millilitres) cans diced tomatoes • 1 cup beef broth • 1/2 cup sugar • 2 bay leaves • 2 teaspoons dried oregano • 2 teaspoons dried basil • 16 lasagna noodles, cooked according to package instructions • 1 (475 grams) container ricotta • 1/2 cup parmesan,

grated • 1 egg • 4 cups mozzarella, grated and divided • Salt and pepper to taste Directions 1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil and sauté the onions, celery and carrots until soft. Salt and pepper to taste. Add one can of tomato paste and stir. Add the turkey and cook for about 5 minutes, making sure the meat

and vegetables are combined. Add the other can of tomato paste, diced tomatoes, beef broth, sugar, bay leaves, oregano and basil. Bring to a boil.

2. Lower the heat and simmer for about an hour or until the sauce has thickened. Remove the bay leaves.

3. In a bowl, combine the ricotta, egg and parmesan. Salt and pepper to taste.

4. Preheat the oven to 375 °F (190 °C). Cover the bottom of a 13-by-9-inch baking sheet with a quarter of the prepared sauce and top with 4 lasagna noodles. Sprinkle one cup of mozzarella over the lasagna noodles. Layer the following ingredients in this order: sauce, 4 lasagna noodles, ricotta mixture, 4 lasagna noodles, sauce, 4 lasagna noodles.

Cover with the rest of the sauce and sprinkle on the remaining 3 cups of mozzarella.

5. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove the aluminum foil and bake for another 15 minutes or until the cheese on top is golden brown. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Start to finish: 2.5 hours (35 minutes active)

Servings: 10 to 12
