Victorian High Tea Room is a popular spot

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Those attending the Dickens Festival most certainly would have enjoyed going back to Victorian times at the tea room at the United Church, hosted by the UCW. This year, Lynn Brady was the Chairperson and each year volunteers prepare baking, pudding and a whopping thousand bis-

cuits!

This stylish attraction featured welldressed gentlemen and ladies from the Victorian Age and observers saw many of the volunteers and patrons dressed eloquently for the occasion, with hats and bonnets available to wear, while sipping on a cup of tea and enjoying a dainty.

Audrey Young and Lois Paul greeted the tea party goers. The event

also featured a baking and craft sale.

Visitors Bill and Marie Abbot had this to say when asked, “What was the highlight of the festival?”

“The high tea was very lovely. It was fun shopping at Kings. We want to get a horse ride and check out the parade.” Bill and Marie are from Regina and arrived by bus. This was their first time attending Dickens Village Festival.

Carlyle’s Main Street was a food lover’s delight at the Dickens Village Festival.

By Kelly Johnson The Observer If you attended the Dickens Festival last weekend, you would have had many good choices to satisfy your taste buds. As well as the many fine eateries in Carlyle, Main Street was garnished with a multitude of food vendors for Friday and Saturday evenings, starting at 5 p.m.

Each vendor was donating funds to a worthy cause and all had good sales with most running out of food both nights.

Fire Department served smoked turkey legs - one for each hand please!; Knights of Columbus cooked up chili with a bun - this will warm you up on a cold night!; The Carlyle Lion’s Club served baked potatoes “with all the fixin’s”, strategically located next to the chili!; Moose Mountain Wado Kai Karate Club dished up perogies, which went great with the smokies served by Carlyle Elementary School grade six class; Church of our Lady, Carlyle had clam chowder, corn chowder, chicken noodle soup, apple cider and mince-

meat tarts; Philippine Kitchen had BBQ chicken skewers, veggie fried rice and banana spring rolls; Southern Plains Co-op baked up cookies, while OneChurch.ca had rice pudding.

Wayne and Trudy Rutten came from Regina and attend the Festival every year.

The Observer asked them, “What is the highlight of the Festival?”

“The show, that is why we came.” “Love the food vendors. “Enjoy the rice pudding. “The K of C chili is great on a cold winter night and the chowder shack is number one.”

Small nuclear may address electrical needs Maybe it is time to go nuclear … or at least, go a little nuclear.

It wouldn’t be an easy decision for anyone. Any foray into nuclear development will likely come at the expense of good coal-generated jobs in rural Saskatchewan’s southeast.

Moreover. it wasn’t so long ago that we’ve been down this road.

That said, the government isn’t looking at those massive nuclear power plants that better serve gigantic world cities in heavily populated countries.

The memorandum of understanding that Premier Scott Moe signed with Ontario Premier Doug Ford and New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs is for technical examination on the viability of small modular reactors (SMR) that would be a far better fit for this province.

The problem, however, is the technology for a functional, operating SMR is a decade away, perhaps even much longer. And there are those who make a pretty good argument that they will never work.

But if we are serious about the need to get out of the business of burning coal to generate electricity, it is only reasonable that all options be put on the table.

And the options of SMRs should at least part of that conversation.

Maybe it’s not even the best option. Maybe the smartest thing SaskPower could do is buy 1,000 megawatts of power from Manitoba Hydro, an option that the Crown electrical utility is currently exploring, according to a report between the two province that’s gotten little attention.

But we should have the discussion without the usual philosophical blinders or political considerations that prohibit meaningful explorations.

It can argued that we didn’t really have that meaningful discussion on nuclear energy the last time we discussed nuclear options 10 years ago.

It was 2009 and the then-young Brad Wall-led Saskatchewan Party administration commissioned former deputy minister Dan Perrins to oversee the Uranium Development Partnership (UDP) public consultations on the potential of nuclear power.

His work immediately ran into massive opposition, with some 86 per cent of all submissions opposing nuclear power compared with only 14 per cent supporting it.

In actual fact, an April 2009 survey revealed 47.8 per cent of Saskatchewan people favouring nuclear power plant compared with 33.5 per cent opposed.

That said, it wasn’t just the environmental left that seemed to have problems with large-scale reactors … and their massive costs.

The last one built in this country three decades ago cost $14 billion. Even smaller 1,000 megawatt reactors were priced at between $8- to $10 billion at the time.

And then there is the added problem of finding a suitable location. Many were not keen on seeing a big nuclear reactor, regardless of how many jobs in created, built in their backyards.

The benefit of SMR, as outlined by Environment Minister Dustin Duncan last week, is that they smaller, cheaper, mobile and less intrusive.

In fact, they could be so beneficial they could end Saskatchewan’s burning of coal to generate electricity by 2050, Duncan said. That would far exceed SaskPower’s current goal of reducing GHGs by 40 per cent of 2005 levels by 2030. Of course, that all depends on whether this industry gets off the ground.

According to A 2014 report by Nuclear Energy Insider, interviews with more than 50 leading specialists and decision makers were expressing “pessimism” that SMR programs were already being abandoned and scaled-back.

Report author Kerr Jefferies, said it’s ”missing the point” to base the future of SMRs on startup difficulties. “ We believe a more accurate picture is that 2014 has been a teething year, and that the SMR story hasn’t even really begun,” Jefferies said.

That underscores it’s not an option yet, but let’s at least keep an open mind.

We need to explore all the options.

Support from the bench We were the grade seven class and that made us the most senior students in our elementary school. We were intramural house leaders, library helpers, and on one special night in December, the Christmas Concert crew. We wondered what special job we might be given. MC? Ushers? Stage hands? Or perhaps the My Outlook most coveted job—the person in Shelley Luedtke charge of choosing and playing the pre-concert music.

I got none of those assignments. My job was to go to every classroom and ask each teacher what, if anything, they might need. Most of the classrooms had a similar atmosphere; students giggling nervously or rehearsing lines they would soon be delivering. How lucky they were, I thought. They had speaking parts. My class was doing a short play with just a handful of speaking roles. The rest of us would be sitting on benches in the background to create the look of a classroom.

I carried out my task and reported to the principal who was checking on things in the gymnasium. He also happened to be our homeroom teacher so when I returned to the classroom there was an intern teacher supervising us, and she was overseeing a final rehearsal of our play. But something was different. The girl who should have been sitting in the front wasn’t there. I found out she was sick and wouldn’t be going on stage. So while I was out walking from room to room checking in on teachers, back in my classroom a role had been re-cast. I knew all the lines, but I didn’t get the chance to be considered because I wasn’t there.

The next day at school was a highly anticipated one since it was the last day before Christmas holidays. There would be a classroom party, games, and an afternoon movie, causing a greater level of excitement than we typically felt as we all made our way into the classroom. Well, not all. The girl who had been sick the evening before wasn’t at school

the next day, either. Too sick to be at the Christmas program and too sick to be at school on one of the best days of the year. Yet I hadn’t given her a second thought the night before. She had been looking forward to the program every bit as much as the rest of us, but I was so focused on myself, and on missing out on her role, I hadn’t thought about her and how sick she must have been to miss it all.

I wish I could say that sort of self-centeredness is relegated to a childhood incident but I can’t.

I know there have been all kinds of times when I’ve been so caught up in what I’m doing I fail to see what is happening to others. Like when the power goes out and I question how I’ll get my work done or what we’ll eat for supper. Maybe I could think instead of those going out making repairs—sometimes at odd hours and in bad weather, or those who live in places that hold out no hope of power being restored because there was none in the first place.

Or when the waiting room is full and I wonder how long it will be before my appointment. Perhaps I could think of those with little or no access to health care of any kind. The 400 million who lack essential services, or the 100 million who are pushed into extreme poverty because of what it costs to receive any treatment at all.

Around me are those battling disease, coping with grief, facing financial heartache or watching a loved one walk a painful path. Those who have been so blindsided by something, they simply wish they could return to a time when things seemed far more…ordinary.

Hopefully there are many special events and unique days dotting our calendars that we can anticipate highly. But there’s also something to be said for the days that are filled with things a bit more typical. Commonplace. Think of all those around us who crave an uneventful day. They are the ones who would love nothing more than to be sitting on the bench at the back providing support, and not the ones at the center of the story. The important thing is to make sure we see them all; whether they speak out or not. That’s my outlook.

Financial Focus Managing Your Money - More Canadians are retiring with debt Most people know that they should be debt free by the time they hit retirement, yet many still carry large mortgages, lines of credit and other kinds of leverage. According to Statistics Canada, 34% of retired people over 55 are still carrying debt*, while a 2017 Equifax Canada report found seniors are increasing their debt loads at a much faster pace than other Canadians.

“That’s a problem for people who can’t keep up with their debt load and are forced to curtail their retirement dreams,” says Duane Bentley, Investors Group Vice-President of Banking and Mortgage Distribution.

There are several reasons why seniors are in debt – here

are a few, along with strategies for dealing with them.

Money pressures Many Boomers are still paying for their children, especially when it comes to housing. According to a 2015 survey**, 18% of first time homebuyers have their down payment paid through a gift from a relative — usually a parent.

Many young retirees are also caring for aging parents and that comes with both a financial cost and a time commitment.

Less aversion to debt According to an Investors Group survey, 27% of high net worth Canadians plan to have mortgages while retired — and 67% who have mortgages say they have the cash to pay them off in full***.

Part of the reason for this is that many Boomers are used to debt – they’ve been borrowing money for decades – and with low interest rates, they don’t’ see the need to pay off their house before they retire.

In some cases, they’re being strategic, says Bentley.

They may use a mortgage to acquire a second property without drawing down on their retirement savings. That can be good strategy because withdrawing other assets, such as money from an RRSP, would trigger tax implications.

But it’s a risky one. If you’re making less money in retirement, you could have trouble paying your debts back, especially as interest

Pay attention to leverage Boomers need to manage their financial situation carefully, as debt problems could force you to sell your home or compromise other plans.

One way to alleviate some of the debt burden is to consolidate your leverage. It won’t reduce your overall debt, but you’ll likely achieve a more attractive interest rate and free up more monthly cash flow. The money you save in interest can be used to more aggressively pay down your debts.

Stragegies for keeping pets safe during holiday events

Are you hosting one or more holiday parties this year? If so, you may be worried about how your pet will cope. Here are some strategies for keeping your dogs and cats safe while you entertain your guests.

• Train them well. Basic dog commands like sit, stay, down and leave will serve you well during holiday gatherings. And training your cats to come when you call can keep them safe if they bolt out the door.

• Supervise children. If your dog or cat isn’t used to kids, there are some precautions to take. Teach children how to approach and gently pet your animals and monitor their interactions. Watch for signs that your pets are uncomfortable. If you sense that they’re tense, remove them from the room.

• Make sure they exercise.

An animal that hasn’t had its regular dose of exercise is more likely to be excited or

stressed when guests visit.

About half an hour before your company is due to arrive, take the dog for a walk or play with the cat to burn off any extra energy.

Most importantly, make sure your pets have a safe haven to go to if the party starts to overwhelm them. Many pets love to retreat to their crates, but you can also put them in a quiet, comfortable room where you know they’ll be content and safe.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • It is our hope that we could increase our readership or at least the discussion about our articles with the hope of preventing crime.

• We have, as always, fraud investigations. One involves allegations against an ex-spouse. The other involves a victim having spent a substantial amount of money on “Google Play Cards” after they were contacted by an individual that identified themselves as a Member of our Detachment. They picked a name of a Member that used to serve here. Remember folks, they use the internet to investigate and prepare their approach. If you put many names of Members of the RCMP in a “Search Engine” you will come up with quite a bit of information. Please

don’t be fooled and remember if the payment option is not something you would see at a store or business, don’t do it.

• We assisted Kisbey Fire Department with a call, however, were called off when it was discovered the “fire” was a “fire” but a controlled fire in an residential “fireplace”.

• The plows have been out and about and we request you use caution around them. Now, if you feel frustrated getting stuck behind a plow, remember they are out there making things safer for us. Recently I talked with several of the plow operators. They pull over occasionally to let traffic pass. If you think they haven’t done so for quite a while due to the long line of traffic behind the plow, but this may not be the case.

Believe it or not, sometimes the plow pulls over and the traffic does as well because many safe drivers realize it is better behind the plow than in front of the plow, being the road has been cleared and sanded. Who would

• We appreciate the assistance the public has provided us in relation to our efforts in tracking down some individuals that are wanted. The information is helpful, however, it needs to be a little more timely. To tell us where a subject was the day before is helpful, however, the delay in providing the information decreases our chances in locating the individual.

• Members responded to a complaint of gun shots being fired. When Members inquired with the subject that allegedly fired his weapon as to what happened and they became agitated and threatened the Members. The individual was subsequently arrested for threatening the Police and through the subsequent investigation, we located an unsecured firearm near the front door of the residence. The individual remains in custody after being charged with seven Criminal Code offences. If the individual had just co-operated and not threatened the Police, they would not likely be in custody. We are not asking you to like us, just respect us, as we have a job to do and we are trying to do it as best as we can.

• If your friends know all your business, the good and the bad and you are on release conditions and you annoy them, don’t be surprised if you find the Police attending to talk with you.

Two individuals were arrested and charged for breaching their release conditions with one being lodged briefly. Ironically the caller made it known they were going to call the Police and the two subjects still chose to remain and irritate the complainant.

• As for discretion we can report we do use it and we do not charge everyone and anyone just because we can. An example would be a recent call where there was a disturbance at a

residence and one of the individuals was on release conditions. They were arrested, lodged until sober and released without charges due to their level of cooperation. Children Services were contacted due to our concerns over children being present. This is our practice to hopefully provide options for parents to assist in supporting their children’s future.

• Members issued approximately 15 warnings and 10 tickets over the last week.

• Tickets were issued for fail to stop at a stop sign - $230, fail to wear a seatbelt - $175, fail to move to right when passed by an emergency vehicle - $125 and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $210.

• Warnings were issued for speeding, fail to wear a seatbelt, inadequate headlights, fail

to dim headlights, drive with undue care and attention, fail to wear seatbelt, fail to produce a drivers licence, and fail to produce registration.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate licence plate lights, and one vehicle received inspection notices for inadequate muffler or exhaust, install mudflaps, inadequate headlamps, inadequate windshield and inadequate rear window.

Mosaic Meal The Mosaic Meal (Potluck) will again be held on the last day before the break, Friday, December 20. Each student is asked to bring enough food for 5 - 6 people according to the grade’s category. The food is to be brought on the Friday, between 11:30 AM and 11:55 AM. Warming up the food at school is not possible, so please bring it ready to serve. The meal starts at noon. The categories are: Grade 7, Chinese food; Grade 8, Mexican food; Grade 9, Italian food; Grade 10, Ukrainian food; Grade 11, appetizers; Grade 12, desserts; Grade 7-12 Filipino students, Filipino food. Arcola Buck Night draws huge crowd

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Arcola Buck Night (ABN) was held on Saturday, December 7 at Prairie Place Hall in Arcola. This was the event’s 19th year. ABN was first held in the Kisbey town hall, organized by local hunters and was attended by approximately 40 people. The ABN motto is “you shoot ‘em, we show ‘em”.

This year the event hosted 320 people and the money raised is donated to local community projects and to the “Look Good Feel Good” program. ABN 2018 and its sponsors raised $18,000 and this year the show should be just as successful.

The event is open to any hunter who has bagged and tagged

either a whitetail or mule deer buck. Each set of “typical” or “non-typical” antlers is presented to be measured by a Boone Crockett scorer.

This year’s scorers were Mike Halirewich, Heath Dreger, Donald Holinaty and Travis Markoski.

There is a men’s category for both species for typical and non-typical antlers, and also a ladies and junior category. The hunter with the high score in each category wins a free taxidermy mount with a value of around a thousand dollars. There are also secondary prizes in each category.

The evening also featured a roast beef supper, an axe throw and numerous draws and raffles. The supper was catered to by Linda

Chapman and Eileen Corrigan.

This year’s top score in each category were as follows: Juniors: Whitetail or Mule deer, typical or non-typical: Kamri Olfert, Mule deer non-typical, score 199, 5/8 Ladies: Whitetail or Mule deer, typical or non-typical: Karen Andersen, mule deer, non-typical, score 174.

Men’s Mule deer non-typical: Peter Andersen, score 227, 7/8 Men’s Mule deer typical: Kris Spence, score 200, 2/8 Men’s Whitetail deer non-typical: Ryan Carrier, score 209, 4/8 Men’s Whitetail deer typical: Brad Zukewich, score 182, 3/8.

Jordon Beriault, Lori Phenix and Bob Phenix enjoyed a week’s holiday from December 1 to 7 in Las Vegas.

Betty-Jo DeJong spent several days last week visiting her dad, Bob Harrison and while here also visited with other family members and friends.

It’s getting to be a very busy time the year now – everyone busy with Christmas preparations and such. I just can’t get into the mood yet, and I can’t even blame the weatherman – as we do have a nice covering of white stuff on the ground. Mind you I surely don’t like the ice that’s lying on top of the snow, does make for dangerous conditions both for driving and especially for walking.

I do take extra precaution when I’m out and about; don’t want any broken bones to deal with now. Hopefully this week I’ll be able to get my Christmas shopping started and completed within a couple of days.

I do have all decorations up (thanks to my granddaughter for getting me started on that issue) and completed. As for baking – I only make Kiddles ‘n’ Bits, they go a long way and are for both here at the house and for extra special gifts. M-m-m good, they are easy and oh so tasty, and may I say not sweet.

I’ve come to the conclusion that they do not, and I repeat do not have many calories (LOL – my excuse and I’m sticking with it). Christmas parties, concerts etc. are soon going to be in full

swing, or maybe even have been held. Here at Alida the Old Fashioned Christmas Concert will be held at the Hall, and with the good old Christmas carols and music it sure does put one in the Christmas mood – hope you’re able to come out and listen to some excellent and talented singing. The School Concert is also coming up soon, which I really enjoy watching, the little ones are always so excited. I do believe the last day of school is on the 20th so time is going by quickly and the holidays will be here – enjoy this time while it’s here. Well enough rambling on

about nothing, I’ll just sign off and send this in now and hope for more news next week.

Shirley Corkish has returned home after spending several days visiting with Jeff and Laura Corkish, Owen, Addie and Mason. She was on hand for American Thanksgiving and attended six kid’s hockey games in five days.

Happy Birthday to Eunice Rogers who had a 93rd birthday on Nov. 29. Eunice is a resident of the Maryfield Villa.

Happy birthday also to Pat Clements who was 90 years old on Nov. 27. Pat had the misfortune of falling and breaking her hip a few days before her birthday. She spent time in the Regina and Moosomin hospitals and is recuperating.

Word has been received of the passing of Audrey (McQueen) Beckett of Regina. She passed away on Nov. 24 at 82 years old. She was the oldest child of George and Edith McQueen.

Sympathy to the family of the family of the late Anne Kapell who passed away on Dec. 5. She was 82 years old and a resident of Deer View Lodge. Her funeral Mass was held at the Roman Catholic Church in Windthorst on Dec. 10.

The Wawota Museum held their annual Christmas Tea and Bake Sale last Friday. The attendance of over 50 people enjoyed visiting and several purchased baking and tickets on the Santa Surprise gift boxes.

Maryfield Villa News Submitted by Connie Schwalm The Christmas Season at the Villa begins with “light up”; when we turn on the courtyard and lounge lights for the first time. Christmas songs and Lois’ sticky buns are part of the tradition. Saturday was the annual Craft Sale. Forty guests, plus members of the Villa Guild served tea. Grace Toms, (who had a whole table of knitting for little people), and Joan Colborn, greeted the guests. Sales were equal to those of 2017, after a poor year last year. The raffle for Jacquie Lawless’ lovely afghan will be held on New Year’s Eve. Thank you to the many people who helped Doris Erickson make this a success and to the Villa Guild for a luscious tea.

Our 1st meeting was held at Jeff Lees residence on October 6th 2019.

We welcomed new Member Reagan KohlerHjertass.

We had our second meeting At the East Residence on November 3 2019.

On December 8th 2019 we held our 3rd meeting and Christmas party at the bowling lanes in Weyburn.

I think everyone had fun including the parents.

In January we will hold our 4th meeting at Corey Lees residence on January 5th 2020.

Circle of Friends last week talked about Lost and Found things. Rings were a chief concern. Eunice lost one with red pearls in the garden; Joan when pulling tomato plants. She went through the pile and found it.

Joyce’s diamond fell out when she was folding the tablecloth. Ralph lost his wedding ring at the fireplace, but sifted the ashes and found it.

Carol lost everything when their house burned.

Grace “found a lot of things: when she moved to the Villa. Janet lost family members but found a new family at the Villa. Mariann found Fred. Pastor Alex lost a borrowed car with his wallet and ID in it. His congregation prayed about it. The police found the car, with everything in it Fred lost a dog, but found it at the neighbors. Ralph Burke “ found a friend in Jesus.”

Christmas Memories: I remember well the many Christmas Concerts we were involved in over the years. Because I was always short I was with students two or three grades younger than me and for four years in a row I was a Christmas doll. A great asset to these performances was the fact that Mr. Dyer was a talented piano player so was always available for accompaniment. We used to spend many days copying the words to all of the Christmas Carols that were going to be sung.

Celebrating the best of community spirit traditional country, old time dance tunes, modern pop, modern country, Country Gospel, modern folk, jazz and a great roots and blues set.

It was also a great problem to have that there were so many vendors registering for the Victorian market that we opened a second venue at the Happy Gang. Or that the United Church High tea was crowded (they served more than 370 people), as they valiantly served all the folks who attended. Or that it was impossible to get a ticket for the Cornerstone production of Arr Humbug. In fact,the theatre troupe open3ed up the dress rehearsal to the public, to make it possible for local supporters to come and see the production.

The bus tours were welcomed by Ken King and Michael Ellis. In full Victoria regalia, they put a lovely face onto the Town of Carlyle for these visitors, and it was fun to

watch these folk as they took in the various aspects of the festival.

And so many supporters locally: from those volunteering on the committee, those welcoming people to town at the hospitality desk, the local museum providing lunches, to those who came out to help decorate, to the community groups offering street food and everyone who dressed in costumes.

The Carlyle Dickens Village festival celebrates that special volunteer spirit which is alive and well in rural Saskatchewan, and we know we’re lucky to live in an area filled with people who understand how to be great neighbours.

And we’re already planning for next year, with more great ideas . But for now, Happy Christmas everyone!

Submitted by Michele Amy Record numbers of participants, amazing weather, stellar musical line ups and attendees traveling from as far as Alberta, Ontario and even from Germany : The Carlyle Dickens Village festival #17 was a great weekend celebrating the volunteer spirit which makes Rural Saskatchewan such a great place to live.

“That was the best parade ever!” commented one festival goer, referring to the 31 lighted floats each night. As the parade goers traipsed back into the Memorial Hall, scrambling to get into the line-up for Filipino food, while Dale MacArthur started his set. Another person commented, “And the music in here – it’s just amazing. Who is THIS guy?” The incredulity in her tone was strong as she took in the performance just beginning.

“Dale MacArthur grew up at White Bear, but now lives and works in Regina.” I said. “We’re lucky he was willing to travel home for this show.” Dale Mac brings a special kind of storytelling to the stage, telling tales of growing up at White Bear, and about his parents (Hazel and Donald MacArthur).

“No kidding. I’m just amazed at the talent in this area.”

I nodded. It’s true.

The South East corner is rife with talent. So much so that when booking local entertainers, we had to rotate some favourites who have been playing for many years in favour of placing others on the mainstage. It’s a great problem to have. We featured everything from

It’s donation time at the Cougars’ last home game in 2019 Nicole Currie Sports Contributor With three games to report on, the Cougars would like to erase the first one from their memory.

It was a great game on Nov. 16, when the Cougars headed to Carnduff to take on the Red Devils. That game went all the way to a shoot-out with the Cougars being the victors.

But . . . on Nov 29 when the Red Devils came to town, it was nothing like the previous match. The Cougars lost 13-5. Scoring for the Cougars were: Johnstone, Turgeon, McGonigal and Fleck with 2.

Turgeon and Shaw each got a helper with Lequyer and McGonigal each getting two. This game was now behind them and so now onto December.

Onto hosting the Coalers, during the Dickens

Festival, Friday, Dec. 6th. The score didn’t truly match how this game went. The Coalers won 6-1, with Tyler Matthewson scoring the lone goal for the Cougars in the third. The shots were 30-33 which shows that it was a pretty even battle but it was just one of those games, when no matter how hard you try, it just doesn’t go in. It is the wonderful world of sports.

Saturday, Dec. 7 was time to shake it off and head back into Mustang territory. The Cougars were very excited to welcome Carter Struthers, a former Bemidji Beaver, to the team. The Cougars came out flying, as it was time to get back on track. Turgeon got the Cougars on the board first with help from T. Matthewson and Lequyer. A minute and a half later, Johnstone snipes with Rose getting the assist and

then to give us a 3-0 lead, T. Matthewson nets one with McGonigal and J. Matthewson helping him out.

Both teams score 2 in the second. Midale worked hard to close the gap. Some great saves by Glasser and help from the D, kept them at bay. Rose and T. Matthewson, scored in the second for the Cougars and Rose getting the lone goal from both teams in the third. It was a 6-2 win for Carlyle.

This Friday, the 13th is the last home game for the Cougars before 2020. It’s also Ugly Christmas Sweater Night, Food Bank Donation Drive and The Teddy Bear Toss. Help us fill tons of boxes up with food for those less fortunate this season and put a smile on a kids face by donating unused stuffies.

Your kids will love throwing them on the ice.

Carlyle Novice Cougars co-host annual tournament Submitted The Carlyle Novice Cougars (Chris) stormed into their home tournament on Dec 7-8 and came out with the A side Championship. The whole team played like a well oiled machine. With strong leadership from Light, Puskas, Eaton, and Faber, combined with some real gutsy

character from everyone else. Not even the flu could stop them.

With timely scoring, a tight defense, mixed with goaltending that can only be described as a masterpiece from Nik ‘The Brickwall’ Brown.

In this reporters opinion Nik could have stopped a train from crossing the goal line if it would have

been asked of him.

On way to the championship the team went 5-0 with wins over Weyburn, Radville, Estevan, Esterhazy, and Whitewood.

Santa gets emergency help from fire department

By Kelly Johnson The Observer This year’s Toy Drive, organized by the The Bargain Shop, Southern Plains Co-op and the Bear Claw Casino has been very successful, receiving an abundance of donations. Santa made the call to the Carlyle Fire Department for help in transporting the toys that were generously donated.

The Drive, a fund-

raiser that makes for a special Christmas for area kids, met its goal of collecting $5,000 in toys and\or cash donations from the Bargain Shop, with donations from the Co-op and Casino yet to be tallied.

Santa and his helpers, many volunteers from the Fire Department and area had a busy Saturday morning loading the treasured cargo.

op had a barbeque set up outside the Bargain Shop selling hotdogs and hamburgers to nourish any hungry passers-by, with all proceeds being donated as well.

Numerous volunteers made this toy drive a gigantic success.

“On behalf of the Bargain Shop, the Bear Claw Casino and the Co-op,” Debbie Jack thanked “the Fire Department for all the help”.

Over the years many awareness campaigns have taken centre stage during the holidays to remind revelers about the dangers of drunk driving. But the risks of drug-impaired driving are less known to the general public, even though a lot of damage has been wrought by these illegal substances.

New campaigns are now aiming to raise public awareness about the risks involved with all kinds of impaired driving and highlight the potential harms to driver, passengers, other cars, and pedestrians when someone is operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs.

DRUG DETECTION Law enforcement authorities are presently informing the public that they are now trained to detect drug-impaired drivers. The police can ask a driver to take a coordination test, the results of which can be confirmed later by an expert in drug recognition at the police station.

EFFECTS OF DRUGS All drugs are a potential danger where driving is concerned. For example, cannabis, or pot, has numerous effects on the driver: difficulty concentrating; poor perception of surroundings; loss of coordination; difficulty in maintaining a straight line, driving at a constant speed, and estimating distances; slowed reaction time; hesitant driving; and lack of ability to handle the unexpected.

In addition, stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamines produce high risk behaviour, a false feeling of confidence, inattention, and loss of co-ordination.

Governments never out of the picture

By Calvin Daniels There is nothing quite as discouraging in agriculture as a headline suggesting farm incomes have risen, but not because of prices.

That was the situation recently at www. producer.com where a headline read; ‘U.S. farm income expected to rise in 2019, but only because of government aid’.

Most farmers have generally maintained they would be happiest if governments would just get out of the way so that supply and demand could determine farm commodity prices, allowing farmers to then respond to the signals of the marketplace.

Of course governments are never completely out of the picture.

We have seen markets dominated through the years by subsidies from the United States and the European Union.

We have seen beef markets blocked by questionable government decisions surrounding the safety of meat following the first confirmed case of Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

We have seen trade disrupted when China used market access as a hammer in a purely political dispute over the December 2018 arrest in Vancouver of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou on behalf of the United States.

None of the above has anything to do with supply or demand economics.

Of course agriculture, like a lot of industries, would like less government intervention in trade up until the point markets short incomes too much, and then government support is often quickly sought.

The headline noted above has the United States Department of Agriculture increasing its net farm income forecast for 2019 by more than 10 per cent, to $92.5 billion, driven largely by the Trump administration’s trade aid payments to farmers and federal insurance indemnities from extreme weather events, states the article.

It has become largely the norm that governments backfill shortfalls of farm income in various ways.

In Canada crop insurance is a first line of defence to issues with production that can cause income loss.

While farmers pay for the insurance, the cost

is shared by the coffers of the federal and provincial governments as well.

Crop insurance is of course only one of a number of income stabilizing programs government has cost-shared with farmers through the years.

It might seem such programs run counter to the idea of government getting out of the way of strictly market-driven farm commodity pricing but it shows that there

is an appreciation still that farming is a unique business in as much as it ultimately does feed the people.

It would be folly to let the sector flounder too greatly because of weather conditions or the meddling of other governments. It is a sector that might work best left to market signals and demand but is all too important not to have some safety nets in place for those times incomes need bolstered.

King’s hosts local musicians

By Kelly Johnson The Observer King’s Department Store was a busy place during the Dickens weekend. The store ran many specials and also hosted area musicians.

Friday and Saturday evenings after the parade, everyone was treated to hot chocolate and entered into a draw for free merchandise, the winner, who had to be present, got to pick any item in the store of value up to $100.00.

The entertainers, who were set up in the shoe department at the back of the store, enlivened the customers as they warmed on hot chocolate. Through the two days there were 10 different artists. The musicians proved to be as great as the in-store specials.

Wendy Kimber from Oxbow was asked, “What is your highlight of the Festival?”

“The Drama, looking in all the shops and looking forward to the parade.”

Donna Nyeste is also from Oxbow and she has attended Dickens half a dozen times.

When asked, “What is your highlight?”, her response was, “The play and the tea is always fun. The weather is wonderful.”

Cornerstone Theatre’s “ARR Humbug” sets sail for fantastic voyage

By Kelly Johnson The Observer This year’s Cornerstone Theatre’s version of Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” was top quality entertainment and wonderfully produced.

The adaptation of this favourite Christmas story is brilliantly written by Doug Waldner and directed by him and Jesse Twietmeyer and Diane Twietmeyer.

It is very well contrived and each character is well casted in each of the roles.

The story is set in the 1800’s when the first steam-powered coalfired ships began to sail the seas. The play takes place on the ship, Humble Bug, the magnificently crafted ship and set, masterfully created by Paul Twietmeyer, brings the audience dockside for the vessel’s maiden voyage.

Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Monte McNaughton, is the proud owner of the shipping company, he has boarded with Bob Cratchit in tow, played by Lori Noble Briner to inspect the technology of the day before the ship sails.

Crachit’s wife, played by Erica Armstrong, comes to dockside with her children and boards the ship with the passengers to give Christmas wishes to her husband before leaving for home.

The Captain, played

by Jesse Twietmeyer, pulls anchor with all aboard. He runs a tight ship, the crew swabbing the deck for the opening scene disembarks on time, to his solo of “Sail Away”.

The pit orchestra, consisting of band members Michele Amy, Morgan Turk, Lane Easton, Tom Richards and Claude Poirier is right on cue and the music is directed by Diane Twietmeyer. Each musical piece was well suited to the story the entire night. Will Elliot was the music and sound man.

Cratchit’s family is unaware of the ship’s departure time and are brought to the Captain presented as stowaways.

They plead their story of why they are present and out of the goodness of his heart, permits them to be guests on the voyage, allowing them to take residence in the shipline’s owner’s stateroom.

Scrooge and Cratchit, marvelling at the new machinery in the engine room, and unaware of the call to set sail, are discovered and presented to the Captain as more stowaways.

The captain, not in any mood for an explanation, disbelieves Scrooges tall tale he is the owner of the shipline, sending Cratchit to the galley and Scrooge is sent to the engine room to shovel coal for attempting such a farfetched lie.

Scrooge, contemplating his situation, is visited by his past partner’s ghost, Jacob Marley, played by Paul Twietmeyer, who warns him to take heed of the message that three visitors will soon deliver.

The visitors come as three pirates Anne Bonny, played by Meryle Cruywels, Captain

Morgan, played by Fred Perry and Blackbeard played by David Slykhuis. They convey to Scrooge his past, present and future and give him guidance to overcome the dubious shortcomings he has created for himself and others in his life.

The final song, sang by all cast, “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate” is a powerhouse musical ending for the play and appreciative audience.

Also casted in the play are First Mate; Sophie Turk, Coal Shoveler; Lane Easton, Young Scrooge; Meagan McCauley, Scrooge’s Girlfriend; Jessica Shirley Dormuth, Cutthroat; Roy Rutagines, Midwife; Laurie Fornwald, Chief Cook; Craig Savill Sailors: Joretta King, Emma Boutin, Bryanne Forcier, Leola Hirtle, and the Cratchit Children: Kassidy Schultz, Rayanne Poirier, Lennox McNaughton, Weston Dormuth and Kendrick Dormuth.

Also credited in this year’s delightful musical production are: lights and sound; Sean Perry, Videographer; Dennis Coffey, Prompt: Joan Bue, Signage and Advertising, Don and Marylin Carter and Programs, Erica Armstrong.

The play’s dress rehearsal was on Wednesday, December 4 and then performed at the Memorial Hall as a keynote part of the Dickens Festival held in Carlyle, with performances on December 6, 7, and 8.

The Cornerstone Theatre cast has all hands on deck for this year’s edition of the Christmas Carol, entitled “ARR Humbug!” tain Lodge.

The play had some very authentic sailor language and entertained all those at-

tending and left everyone looking forward to next year’s show. To out-do this year’s edition the Cornerstone Theatre

will need to come up with something that is completely out of this world!

Kingston Midstream donates to area causes

By way of the Richardson Foundation, Kingston Midstream donated $50,000 to the Arcola Arena – the Prairie Place Complex. This money will go towards a much needed renovation project in the arena. Kingston Midstream is a proud supporter of the communities that we do business in and would like to thank the volunteers who make places like the Prairie Place Complex run smoothly.
