Healthified Broccoli Cheddar Soup

Leftover soup should be reheated in the microwave rather than the stovetop, where the cheese will “break” or separate from the broth.

Ingredients 1 bunch broccoli 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 medium red-skinned potato, diced 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 3 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1 cup grated extra-sharp Cheddar 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce One 12-ounce can fat-free evaporated milk Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 scallions, thinly sliced Directions Separate the stems and the florets from the broccoli. Trim and discard the bottom of the broccoli stems and peel the tough outer layers. Finely chop the stems and coarsely chop the florets and set aside separately.

Mist a large pot with nonstick cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Add the broccoli stems, onions and potatoes and cook, stirring, until softened, 7 to 10 minutes. Add the flour and cook, stirring, until lightly toasted, about 2 minutes. Stir in the broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to maintain a simmer and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened and the vegetables are tender, 12 to 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, combine the reserved florets and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, cover and continue to steam until the florets are bright green and crisp-tender, about 5 minutes. Add the entire contents of the pot with the florets to the soup along with the nutmeg. Stir to combine and remove from the heat. Stir in the Cheddar, Worcestershire and milk. Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with the scallions.

Carlyle and area welcomes Staff Sergeant Darren Simons Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle RCMP detachment welcomed a new Staff Sergeant last week. Darren Simons is excited to be starting in Carlyle and serving the area.

Simons says that his want to join the RCMP began as a youth telling The Observer, “It was a childhood dream.”

Simons’ father was a member of the military police and was stationed in Germany for a time. It was in Germany that Simons finished high school and joined the Canadian Armed Forces.

“I actually joined the Canadian army while in Germany, I was sworn in on the base there, and then flown to Canada,” he explained.

After two years serving the country as a soldier, Simons applied to and joined the RCMP. “It’s been just over 25 years now and this is my ninth detachment,” Simons explained. “I’m kind of following in my father’s footsteps as he was in the military police; I have the military side covered and now the policing side as well.”

“They sent me to Montreal first for seven and a half months to learn French and then I was in Depot for six months in Regina.”

further north spending time in Tuktoyaktuk and Fort Laird in the North West Territories.

“That’s where I met my wife, Tracy,” Simons smiled.

Simons was then stationed at Gleichen, “That’s when I married my wife,” he added. Together they moved to Boyle and then Lac La Biche – where they had their son, Nathan – before making the trek to Saskatchewan where he was most recently stationed at Hudson Bay. “I’ve lived in seven provinces and territories throughout my life as well as in Germany.”

Although Simons has seen much of Canada and lived abroad, his priorities fit nicely into small town Saskatchewan.

“I like helping people and being involved in the community,” Simons stated. “I’m helping coach my son’s hockey this year. On Saturday, Oct. 24, we got to town at 2:30 p.m. and by 4:30 p.m. my son was on the ice and I was swinging doors.”

“My wife and I very much like being involved in the community and we love it here already. We researched the area before coming, my wife had family that lived in Manor, and we have friends that had worked down here. So, we knew people would be friendly and that they were pro-community people and pro-police, and that’s actually why we decided to come down here.”

The Running Refugee: Ted Jaleta’s second chance

Ted Jaleta says, “I’ve run for pleasure and I’ve run for my life.” The Regina marathon runner, author, humanitarian, Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame inductee and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal recipient recently delivered his challenging and inspiring message to students, as part of Arcola School’s Education Week celebrations.

The “almost 60”-year-old was one of eight children born into a farming family in northwestern Ethiopia, and one of the first members of his family to attend school.

“We had no running water, no electricity,” says Jaleta. “My parents couldn’t read and write-that was a privilege reserved for the very few-but they believed in education, especially my mother.”

“Sometimes, I was late to school, because I had to get up early to do chores at about 5 a.m. We had no clock, just a radio. It was pretty hit and miss, so I often used the shadows to tell time.”

“And that’s how my running began,” “I didn’t want to be late for school, but I had to finish the chores, so often I was running to school.”

“The distance to school was more than 10 km,” he adds. “And I walked there barefoot, from the age of five.”

While education opened up new opportunities for Jaleta; it also brought challenges-many of which involved heartbreaking choices.

“I (now) speak six languages, including English, Swahili and Arabic,” says Jaleta. “ There are more than 80 languages and 200 dialects in Ethiopia.

But when I started school, school was taught in a language I didn’t understand. It was very difficult and I faced bullying and was punished severely for not understanding. I almost gave up.”

“There were no role models or support back then. So my role models were teachers. They dressed better and they had shoes-and I had none.

That’s how I measured my success.”

Jaleta persevered and from grades four through eight, attended a second school that was a four-day walk from his home.

“I was only home during Christmas and Easter,” he says. “It was very mountainous country up and down and mules and donkeys carried our supplies.

After completing grade eight, Jaleta’s mother“my first hero”-and father decided that he had enough education.

“You have to understand, my mother, especially, dreamed of a better future for me. She was a community leader and she taught me compassion and caring for others. Without my mother, I would not be here.”

“But by grade eight, I had to make the choice to run away from home in order to continue my education, because both she and my father believed that grade eight was enough education for me. I stayed with an uncle and I didn’t see my parents again until grade 11.”

During high school, the man whom Jaleta calls “my second hero” came to speak. Barefoot runner and later, Olympic gold medalist and Ethiopian, Abebe Bikila made a profound impression on the young Jaleta.

“He won the Olympic gold medal in the 1960 Olympics in Rome,” says Jaleta. “He told me: ‘Don’t get held back because you don’t have shoes. Instead, work hard and don’t set barriers, set goals.

Like his hero, Jaleta was soon on track to become a world-class long-distance runner and Olympic candidate.

However, in 1970, his country entered what Jaleta calls, “the darkest period in Ethiopia’s history” as civil war broke out.

As a university student, Jaleta was caught up in a peaceful demonstration and was shot in the leg, imprisoned, and brutally tortured.

“I was shot in my upper left leg,” he says. “I was lucky my muscles and bones were okay.”

“It was a peaceful protest and then the military showed up, firing AK-47s,” says Jaleta. “We started running for our lives. At first I didn’t realize I had been shot. I felt a burning sensation in my leg and

As a result, Jaleta was imprisioned in a detention camp, “a horrible situation.”

“I was kept in a small room, meant for three or four people. But there were 20 to 30 people standing there. Every night, some were taken for interro-

“Sometimes, we were made to dig our own graves.”

“I was one of the youngest there,” adds Jaleta.

“Once, 20 of us were ushered outside to sit by the gate. Sometimes, other detainees were coming into the camp, in trucks. The police officer got distracted and I escaped.”

“There was a small, slim chance that I would succeed in escaping,” he adds. “Either I would get killed or at the very least, shot. But I managed to escape. I jumped a brick fence that had broken glass on top. I have lots of scars on my arms.”

“People ask me how I did it. But when you are scared, you can do anything. You just come to understand you’re (probably) going to die. At the time, some detainees advised their fellow prisoners to get some cyanide poison, if you could. It was that bad.”

“I ran for my life and I was a fugitive in my own country for two years. The militia was hunting for me. I hid in caves and I was safe in the bush, so that’s when I would stop running.”

After two years in hiding, Jaleta escaped to Sudan in 1978, a period he calls “the darkest moment of my life.”

“I was in a refugee camp. There was disease and suicide all around me. The conditions were appalling. Sometimes there was no food for two or three days. There was no running water or electricity and when there was food, there was very little.”

“It was so hard---just to survive.”

Jaleta refused to give up and on Christmas Eve 1978, he was accepted to Kenya, where thanks to a humanitarian organization, he attended trade school from 1979 until 1982.

“Life was better,” he says. “But I still wanted more.”

“I was accepted to Canada and in 1982, I arrived in Regina as a refugee. My early years in Canada were very challenging,” he says. “But I set about adapting to my new home and that meant stepping outside my comfort zone.”

“I didn’t have a clue,” he says. “When people ask me what I expected Canada to be like, to be honest, after the refugee camp, having a home and a country to accept me felt like heaven.”

“When immigration officials asked me where I might like to go, I said I knew of Toronto and Vancouver. I knew Toronto had an Ethiopian community, so that was my first thought, but I really was so grateful to come to Canada, I was happy to be anywhere.”

“They asked me if I knew anyone in Toronto.

When I said, ‘No’,” they said, ‘You’re going to Saskatchewan---Regina, Saskatchewan.’ I had actually learned about Saskatchewan in school, because it was known for agriculture.”

“I was randomly assigned to Regina,” adds Jaleta. “Because there were immigration quotas.

And I’m so glad I came to Regina for so many reasons. I’ve been there for 33 years now. It was smaller and at that time, didn’t have a lot of large ethnic groups, so I had the opportunity to become immersed in Canadian society.”

“I’ve met wonderful friends here and now my friends and family are here. I don’t need to go anywhere else.”

However, life in Canada required Jaleta to consciously make the choice to adapt to yet another new environment.

“I chose to move out of my comfort zone to learn more about my new country,” he says. “The weather was different and there was a language barrier. But community members and people were very welcoming. But coming from an African village, it was scary.”

“But I knew that Canadians were compassionate and caring, so I knew that I was in good hands.”

In Canada, Jaleta says he was inspired by the man he calls “my third hero”-Terry Fox. “Terry Fox made me realize I could reach my potential,” says Jaleta. “His story inspired me to believe I could do anything. He took a negative and turned it into a positive for others.”

“I was empowered by his message. I put up his poster in my room. I quit smoking. I took up running again.”

“I realized that every choice I made affected my destiny. My choices regarding diet, friendship, education, activities, community involvement...It all helped to shape my future.”

“And you don’t know where destiny can take you.”

Since his arrival in Canada, Jaleta worked several jobs-often more than one at a time. “I worked in construction, I did manual labour,” he says. “But eventually, I went to university to become an accountant and I’ve only recently retired. I worked for 25 years at the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) as an auditor.”

Still a runner and enthusiastic community volunteer, Jaleta has received numerous honoursamong them, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and in 2005, he was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. Combining both his athletic and philanthropic interests, he founded Regina’s ‘Jaleta’s Pacers’-a group of runners who “have raised over $600,000 for local charities.”

Married with two sons, Jaleta credits the “second chance” Canada gave him and is determined to repay this country and its people for making him one of their own.

“Since I came to Canada, I see opportunities everywhere,” he says. “When I received an award, I never imagined such a moment, when I was sitting in a refugee camp contemplating suicide. I used to homeless and now I have a home and a beautiful family.”

“It’s a great opportunity to be born and raised here,” says Jaleta. “And my biggest message to young people is if they want to succeed and live life to the fullest, education is one of the greatest tools and they should take it seriously.”

“Canada is a great country, you don’t have to walk or run from far away to get an education, and you don’t have to run for your life.”

A message through art at CES Kelly Running Observer Staff

Youth enjoyed the opportunity to learn painting techniques and create a seemingly abstract piece of art, which turned into a much more meaningful piece.

The Carlyle Elementary School welcomed Heather van der Breggan and Rickee-Lee Webster from Weyburn on Thursday, Oct. 29, for the program Smartart Artsmart.

The mother and daughter are both full time artists at their studio Simple with a Twist.

“We did a Culture Days program a few years ago and we talked about different cultures and their importance,” Webster said. “My mother creates polyptych art, which uses multiple canvases to create a larger picture. So, we decided to do a world to focus on different cultures.”

This gave way to the pair deciding to apply for a Community Initiative Fund grant in order to take their teachings to more schools. van der Breggan added, “It’s a grid picture of the world and while we’re hanging each painting up on the wall the kids realize that their abstract painting is actually a part of the Earth. Each painting is a unique piece, like each person, and this program is more than just painting. It teaches them that the world is not whole without their contribution to it.”

Each of the participating youth were given a canvas and an abstract photo which they had to recreate on their canvas. The photos, separately, looked abstract and the students had no idea that they were actually working together to create a larger work of art. As Webster began hanging the paintings the students started pointing and exclaiming, “We created a planet! We created Earth!”

After the paintings were all displayed, Webster then took one piece out, “What happens when I take this piece away?”

Students exclaimed, “It’s wrecked. It’s not whole anymore.”

This was the lesson that van der Breggen and Webster were instilling in them as Webster said, “The world is not complete without you. We need each of you to make our world complete.

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

A friendly reminder: The Carlyle RCMP want to encourage people to lock their vehicles and houses.

Many people will leave a vehicle unlocked and hide a key somewhere on the vehicle, but RCMP want people to know that there are only so many hiding places and a hidden key is not a good idea. RCMP have received various calls regarding vehicles that have been entered, but if unlocked then it is not a breaking and entering.

In regards to fraud RCMP remind people that if someone offers you money, but you have to send them money first it is likely fraud. Additionally, if someone calls asking for bank information, Social Insurance Number, and Date of Birth it is likely a fraud. If you suspect you’re being a target of fraud contact the Canadian Anti Fraud Agency.

81 files The Carlyle RCMP dealt with 81 calls to service between Friday, Oct. 23, and Thursday, Oct. 29.

911 call There was a 911 misdial at Kenosee Lake.

Arson A suspected arson was reported in the Carlyle area and is currently under investigation.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP provided assistance to other police agencies regarding warrants.

Members were made aware of a missing person from the Carlyle area and are following up on this.

Carlyle RCMP worked with Weyburn City Police regarding an individual who had been causing issues in both Arcola and Weyburn. The subject was of police interest for two weeks and will appear in court in Estevan for possession of a dangerous weapon, careless storage of a firearm,

CAA’s top ten tips on winterizing your vehicle Saskatchewan winters tend to sneak up quickly with weather conditions that can affect vehicles and vehicle engines. CAA Saskatchewan encourages motorists to prepare their vehicles for the expected snow and cold and has offered the following list of top ten tips: 1. Test your battery: Colder temperatures can weaken the battery and cause it to fail.

2. Test your block heater and cord: When the temperature falls below -15°C, it’s important to plug in.

3. Test your engine coolant: Your vehicle needs the correct amount and strength for optimal performance. Also check the oil and have it changed if needed. (Synthetic motor oil flows better at low temperatures; this will reduce engine wear and help your vehicle start easier.)

4. Check your cooling system: Ensure there are no cracks in the hoses, or coolant leaks. Also check the condition of the serpentine belt.

5. Check your tire pressure: The right pressure is important for traction and fuel efficiency.

Consider installing winter tires.

6. Check the ignition system: Replace spark plugs as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

7. Check brakes: Pulling, a soft pedal, or unusual squealing or grinding may mean repairs are needed. (The best times to inspect brakes are in the spring and fall.)

8. Check the exhaust system: Leaks could send carbon monoxide into the vehicle.

9. Check your washer fluid: It should be rated in the -40°C temperature range.

10. Check vehicle owners’ manual: Adhere to the maintenance recommended by the manufacturer.

For vehicle winter inspection, visit a CAA Car Centre or any facility that is part of CAA’s Approved Auto Repair Services (AARS) network across the province.

For roadside assistance, CAA Members can call 1-800-222-4357 or request the service online at caask.ca and also through CAA’s mobile app.

CAA Saskatchewan’s Road Service Express is an automated system that receives and dispatches emergency road service when calls are placed from Members at their home address. This service helps reduce long telephone waits for Members who live

Disturbing the peace Members responded to a loud party in Carlyle for disturbing the peace.

Traffic infractions An impaired driver was reported in the area, but patrols were unable to locate them.

A local driver was found driving while disqualified and a short time later was again stopped for driving while disqualified as well as for impaired driving.

There was a driver in the Carlyle area who was stopped for driving without due care and attention.

Two vehicles in Carlyle and one in Arcola were both stopped and fined $580 for not being registered.

Five stop sign tickets were issued in the detachment area at $230 each.

There were over 30 speeders stopped and fined for driving at excess speeds.

Four seatbelt tickets were issued at $175 each within the detachment area.

An individual was fined for using their cell phone while driving.

Members received a complaint about unsecure cargo on a vehicle in Redvers.

Five warning tickets were issued for vehicle equipment such as tint and for minor offences.

Thefts Four thefts occurred in the detachment area.

A Hallowe’en gargoyle was stolen from Arcola. The gargoyle is five feet high and the RCMP ask anyone who has information regarding the gargoyle to contact them.

A 75 gallon slip tank was stolen from Carlyle.

There was a theft from a motor vehicle in Kisbey.

A truck was stolen from Carlyle.

Harassing phone calls There were two complaints of harassing phone calls: one was in Arcola and the other in Wawota.

Mischief Two mischief calls were reported in the Carlyle area and are under investigation.

There was a call regarding public mischief where an individual requested police assistance and an investigation was opened, however, it was proven the complainant was lying to officers.

A milestone in space

Since, Nov. 2, 2000 the International Space Station has been manned. For 15 years astronauts from various space programs have lived on the station.The station was first manned by Commander William Shepherd of NASA and cosmonauts Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos).

Currently there are six on Kelly Running board: Station commander Scott Observer Staff Kelly of NASA, Flight engineer Kjell Lindgren of NASA, Flight engineers Mkhail Kornienko, Oleg Kononenko, and Sergey Volkov of Roscosmos.

The space station, an orbiting laboratory, is located approximately 400 kilometres from above the earth.

It’s amazing to think that a mere 50 years prior to the launch of the space station came the Space Race between the very countries now working together.

Having studied history in school, I was intrigued by the Soviet Union, and focused on it when choosing classes, so learning about the Cold War and the Space Race were included. It’s fascinating really.

On Oct. 4, 1957, the Soviets launched Sputnik, the Russian word for “traveler.” It was the first artificial satellite and the first man-made object to orbit the Earth.

Its launch came as a surprise to the Americans, who were determined to explore space as the next frontier, so losing ground to the Soviets was unacceptable.

During the late 1940s and 1950s, both the Americans and the Soviets launched animals into space to further their research, and although they were launched 42 miles up to 62 miles up, it was in 1957 that the Soviets sent Sputnik II into orbit with a stray dog they had found, Laika, meaning “barker” in Russian. Sadly Laika didn’t survive, no provisions were made for her to return, and she died orbiting the planet in her capsule. However, the Soviets launched two dogs in 1960 on Sputnik 5 within animal cargo, which survived, and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev gave a puppy born to one of the Sputnik 5 dogs to Caroline Kennedy, despite Cold War tensions.

In 1958, the United States launched Explorer I and President Dwight Eisenhower created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

In 1959 the Space Race became a more heated competition between the two powers, as Luna 2 was launched by the Soviets which was the first space probe to hit the moon. This was followed by the launch of Yuri Gagarin into space becoming the first person to orbit the Earth. In May of that same year, two months after Gagarin’s launch, Alan Shepard became the first American in space, however he did not orbit the Earth.

With the Soviets seemingly beating the Americans in the Space Race, President John F. Kennedy declared that the United States would land a man on the moon before the end of the decade. The American sent John Glenn into space in 1962 becoming the first American to orbit the Earth.

Between 1961 and 1964, it’s said that NASA’s budget increased by 500 percent and although there was a setback in 1967 of three astronauts killed after their spacecraft caught fire during a launch simulation.

As the Americans were still determined to continue, the Soviets began questioning the importance of space exploration. As they debated the necessity of it, Sergey Korolyov, the chief engineer of the Soviet space program died in 1966.

The Amercans sent Apollo 8 in 1968, the first manned mission to orbit the moon. They followed this by launching Apollo 11 in 1969 manned by Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Armstrong would go down in history as being the first man to step foot on the moon with, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

And like that the Space Race was won by the United States. The Soviets attempted four lunar landings following the United States’ success, but were unable to accomplish this.

The Space Race ended in the 1970s as U.S. astronauts on an Apollo spacecraft docked, while in orbit, with a Soviet Soyuz vehicle. This handshake in space between the two commanders symbolized an a warming of relations between the U.S. and Soviets during the latter part of the Cold War.

Remembering what I didn’t experience In author Audrey Nieffenegger’s bestseller “The Time Traveller’s Wife” main character Henry travels between different time periods in his life. Because he knows what is about to take place, he awakens early on the morning of September 11, 2001 so he can “listen to the world being normal for a little while longer.”

What day would you Shelley Luedtke choose to go back to if you wished to experience the world as it “was”? Select an event in history and you realize that something preceded it to set up the conditions for it to occur.

So you go back further and come across much of the same thing--some of which may have been forgotten or perhaps some of which we failed to take any real notice.

But there are events that give us pause--as they should--because of their indisputable historical and contemporary implications. Like World War I. Last year there were commemorations of the 100th anniversary of its 1914 beginnings. A stunning display was unveiled in London called “Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red” which featured 888,246 ceramic poppies--each one representing the life of a British or commonwealth soldier killed during the war.

When the war ended, a group of citizens in Kansas City, Missouri raised an astonishing 2.5 million dollars in 10 days to build a permanent memorial to those who served; a remarkable accomplishment reflecting the passion of public sentiment for the Great War that dramatically changed the world. A 217-foot Liberty Memorial Tower was completed in 1926, and in 2006 a stateof-the-art museum was added, and that’s where we found ourselves on a hot summer day this past August.

The experience begins as visitors cross a glass bridge suspended over a field of red. Poppies.

The impact startles. There are just so many your mind reels at the thought that each one represents a loss of life. Then you read the information and are shocked to discover that each poppy doesn’t represent one death. Each one represents 1000 deaths; an incredibly emotional reality of the 9 million who perished as a direct result of the war. It is beautiful, sad and unsettling. And you have yet to enter the main gallery.

We were greeted by a volunteer who saw a brace on my knee (a torn tendon--nothing serious) and suggested I would benefit from the use of a wheelchair. I gently shook my head but he insisted, noting the size of the museum might pose a problem. It is huge, housing the largest collection of WWI artifacts in the world. Guess that’s why they offer the option of a two-day pass. We had two hours.

Through displays, interactive exhibits, audio accounts, letters and documents we learned more about the 36 nations and 65 million soldiers involved in the “war to end all wars.” Amongst the uniforms, medical supplies and aircraft there was a theme--the stories of those who wore those uniforms, cared for the wounded, and did the daring and impossible.

But the exhibit that caused me to stop in my tracks (or wheels, as it were) was the reconstruction of a farmhouse damaged by an artillery hit. The remnants of an interrupted meal sat on the table. Books were blown apart and pages littered the floor. Children’s clothing was scattered haphazardly. A family had been going about its day.

A family, just like mine, for whom life had suddenly changed. A farmhouse representing the thousands of houses that had once been home and were no longer.

Think of the families over the century who might wish they could go back and change the course of those events. They may have longed for a restart, a re-do of the day that took their loved one, robbed them of their livelihood, stole futures away from their children and altered the course of their lives. But of course that would change… everything…in ways we can’t begin to hypothesize or imagine…or fear. So we need to stop, to reflect, acknowledge and remember. Remember what we weren’t there to experience, but remember that which made us beneficiaries.

At the end of our visit I got out of the wheelchair, unlike so many soldiers who were unable to, and walked out the doors into the bright, sunny day; 100 years after these events had been set in motion and thousands of miles from where they continue to occur. What does a place like that, or a day like November 11, mean for us today?

Nothing. If we allow that. Or everything, if we remember that the way the world was is a record of history, lest we forget, and the way the world will be depends on its yet to be documented chapters. And we are its contributing authors. That’s my outlook.

Seeing things differently . . .

-Winston Churchill At this year’s provincial launch of the Royal Canadian Legion’s 2015 poppy campaign, Saskatchewan Lt.-Gov. Vaughn Solomon Schofield urged citizens to wear their poppies in honour of a chosen member of Canada’s military-saying, “One of the most important things you can do is honour your history and honour your past.”

Just a casual perusal of The Observer’s archives makes me believe that this will be a pretty simple task for many people in this area.

The roll calls of names on plaques and cenotaphs in communities in this corner of the province contain many, many familiar surnames. Some of these veterans are still with us, while others are now gone.

The lists of casualties and injuries from military conflicts in which Canadians have served and sacrificed is almost too overwhelming to contemplate. In both World Wars, for example, Canada’s involvement was much, much greater than our status as a young country with a relatively small population would usually dictate; and because of this, Canada’s losses were disproportionately large.

Although the numbers are tragically impressive, they are destined to become history’s footnotes without the people-and their storiesbehind the statistics.

The person I will wear my poppy for this year didn’t die in battle, but he spent five years and an ocean away from his wife and baby daughter, was injured, and most tragically, experienced the loss of two childhood friends-Mel and Earl Beatty of Carlyle- who were killed at the ill-fated raid on Dieppe, France, in August, 1942.

Like most veterans of that era, my Grandpa Ken didn’t talk about the war at all to me until near the end of his life. Even now, I feel a little strange referring to any part of his war experience publicly, because I know he spared me and the rest of his family as much as he could from talk of the ugliness of war-especially his personal experience of it.

Our family is lucky enough to have most the letters that he wrote to my grandma during his five years overseas. He certainly spared his young wife any detailed descriptions of blood and battle, too. But when I read them, what is especially evident is what he-and all members of our serving military, past and present-sacrifice on our behalf: sometimes their very lives, and always, some of their precious, irreplacable time.

My grandpa’s letters start in 1939 and end nearly half a decade later. Repeatedly, he tells his wife the most important things she can send him are letters with news of family and friends in Carlyle, along with photographs of herself and their firstborn, my mom. Every year, at Christmas, his letters repeat the refrain: “Surely, I’ll be home next year...”

Early in 1941, he writes: “Sometimes when I think of possibly being separated for months on end, I feel pretty blue. It’s just wasted time for us, kiddo, is it not? But it’s something apparently ordained by the fates or whatever one might call it. I often wonder if I will ever get back, but that’s one of the good points about not being able to see into the future, because as it is, we can always think that it will be the other fellow that will not return.”

Whatever the era, whatever the conflict, members of our military make innumerable and often, unimaginable sacrifices on our behalf.

For that, we owe them. For that, we must remember them.

Remembrance Day is something that we need to embrace as Canadians. It’s something we need to recognize. It is a way for us to remember those that gave their lives, so we could enjoy the privileges we have in our country. It’s also a way for us to say thank you to each and every person in the armed forces who are currently serving our country.

It isn’t a small task and comes with great pain to the individual serving and to their families and friends. The service men and women leave their families for tours of duty, experience unthinkable acts while deployed, and suffer from both mental and physical ailments, while each one knows they may lay their life down defending Canadians and what Canada stands for.

Having been a history major, I remember studying war. I took a variety of classes, so studied many battles and wars, learning of unimaginable horrors that humans can do. There was one section of a text book that is seared into my mind… it was in a class focused on the Far East and in it there were pictures of piles of massacred dead bodies, of adults and children. They were photos of what is known as the “Rape of Nanjing,” which took place Dec. 13, 1937, in China.

It was uncomfortable reading about the massacre and although I haven’t heard of anything to the same extent in current news regarding wars around the world, the thoughts about what our veterans and our current armed forces see make me shiver. I appreciate everything they’re doing and have done for our country because it’s not an easy task.

My knowledge of war comes from books and from discussions in classes, and although I’ve never seen it firsthand – the majority of people in Canada are privileged enough they haven’t seen it firsthand – I feel as though studying it has given me the ability to at least understand the importance of our military and what they do. I’m not saying I know how it feels, but rather that I understand that war and being a part of the military is something that can change people. I know that I want them to have the support they need and the thanks they deserve for their efforts.

I remember discussing in class post-traumatic stress and how, even though it’s not handled in the best possible way today as it could be, that it was once swept under the rug as “shell shock.”

People would come home with strange quirks or be completely different than when they left and it would be chalked up to “shell shock.”

One story that Moose Mountain stood out to me was of Photography Club a man who returned from fighting in World War II. He came home without any physical

ailments, all was well, except for when he passed by a window. Every time this man came to a window, he would drop to the floor and crawl past. A few students in my class laughed, thinking it was quite funny, but it wasn’t funny, not in the least and the majority knew how solemn a moment it was learning about this man.

Can you imagine the terror he must have felt to lead him to do this? For this person a window meant danger. It meant that if you walked by or sat visibly that you would be shot by the enemy.

Windows, something we don’t give a second thought to in Canada except for to enjoy the view out of, we purposefully stop and look out of them.

I don’t claim to know what it is like for soldiers, I’ve only seen pictures and read about war, but I do know they deserve to be thanked and appreciated for everything they do for us. That Remembrance Day is something extremely important to recognize and to participate in.

I may not necessarily agree with all of the conflicts we have entered into or will enter into, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate everything our service men and women do for us. However, I’ve never experienced war firsthand, but I thank those that have and those that do; because of them the closest I have to get to war is through reading about and discussing it. It’s why I wear a poppy for Remembrance Day and why I’m a member of the Canadian Legion.

Through the Lens . . . .

If everyone would look for that uniqueness then we would have a very colorful world.

Manor earns first at Arcola-Carlyle senior boys tourney

The Manor Sr. Boys Volleyball team have been on a winning streak this season, earning first place at each tournament they’ve attended, including last weekend’s Arcola-Carlyle Sr Boys Tournament which hosted a large 12 team competition. The boys are sitting well heading into Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 21, in Arcola.

Sr. Boys tied with Gladmar and Kahkewistahaw, but in counting sets for and against it was Gladmar and Kahkewistahaw who advanced to the playoff.

The Arcola Sr. Boys and Carlyle Sr. Boys hosted In Carlyle another three-way tie resulted with a 12-team tournament on Friday, Oct. 30, and Carlyle, Manor, and Sturgis awaiting the results of Saturday, Oct. 31. tallied sets for and against. Carlyle was unable to Attending were Moosomin, Arcola, make it through, which saw Manor and Sturgis face Kahkewistahaw, Lampman, Gladmar, Stoughton, off in a playoff match.

Manor has been having a great season, on a winning streak across the southeast, having earned first place at each tournament they’ve attended.

Ko is more than ok; she’s the best

By Bruce Penton No one has a brighter future in their particular sport than pro golf’s Lydia Ko. And she’s such a sweetheart, too.

The 18-year-old New Zealander — did we mention she’s only 18? — already has 10 Ladies Professional GolfAssociation victories. And she’s only 18!

KO in boxing is a knockout. The women trying to beat Ko on the LPGA Tour have the feeling of being knocked out. She won

two pro titles while still an amateur at the ages of 15 and 16 and when she finally turned pro, she just kept on winning.

She moved to No. 1 in the Rolex world rankings earlier this year, lost that position for a spell when Inbee Park went on a hot run, but has since regained it.

After two wins through the first half of the season, Ko got really hot, winning the CP Rail Canadian Open in August, the season’s final major, the Evian Classic, in France in September, and the Fubon Taiwan Championship in October. In 22 tournaments in 2015, she has 15 top 10s. Now that’s dominance.

Let me first say this: Looking back, if you had to make a trade, would you sacrifice the worst season in Roughrider history in order to experience the greatest?

Look at it this way -- if someone told you going into the 2013 Roughrider season that at the end of the thing, you’re going to win it all in your own stadium on the most perfect day in Saskatchewan’s history, 45-23, (over Kent Austin’s Hamilton TigerCats no less), but in turn you’d have to experience the worst season the Roughriders have ever had?

Of course you would. We all would. In a New York minute. We’ve just got it backwards.

However nobody at that time could’ve predicted how painful that trade-off would be just two years later.

Like, holy smokes.

Look, I understand there are scores of people going through much, much more painful things in life, like life-threatening illness, job loss, marital break-ups and all the rest.

But in football terms, what the Saskatchewan Roughriders are going through right now is as bad as it gets. Or at least, the worst I’ve seen in my 17 years on the job.

This was clear immediately following Saturday’s 42-19 humiliation in Calgary at the hands of the Stampeders when I was sprinting to the press box washroom in a break before the postgame radio show.

Some of the Rider assistant coaches were coming the other way, on their way to the elevator that led down to their locker room. I’ve seen a lot of facial expressions in my quarter century in this sports business but the look on these guys’ faces was a new one.

They looked like zombies. Emotionless.

Spiritually bankrupt. It would seem the pain is gone and now they’re all just numb.

Just ... get ... this ... season ... over ... with ... already.

So what do you need to know about Saturday’s game in Calgary anyway? The Stamps opened the game with a 60-yard kickoff return and three minutes later the ball was in the Rider endzone courtesy of an Eric Rogers touchdown reception.

8-0 Calgary after a two-point convert. Less than seven minutes later it was 16-3 Calgary after another Rogers touchdown and another two-point conversion.

Calgary would never trail in the game. The loss dropped the Riders to 2-15, equalling a franchise record for losses in one season with another game to go. And just why was Stampeders coach John Hufnagel going for two points (twice) so early in a game like this? I checked with the Stamps and they said that’s what they always do early in games.

“She’s incredible,” says fellow tour pro Amy Anderson of North Dakota. “I actually get asked about her a lot, like what’s going on there. She is the real deal. I’ve never seen her hit the ball bad. Every part of her game is her strength, and it’s really fun to watch. It’s really fun to be part of the tour when she’s here.”

On top of everything else, Ko’s success hasn’t gone to her head. She is well liked by her peers, always smiles when granting interviews and repeats the same thing whenever she is asked to explain her success: “I just like to have fun,” she says.

No. 1 on the money list, No. 1 in smiles and self-deprecating shrugs.

She is loved by fans, by

her peers, by sponsors and, apparently by Time Magazine, which last year rated her among the 100 most influential people in the world.

Annika Sorenstam, who was the Lydia Ko of her day, wrote the story for Time Magazine and said Ko “is exceptionally talented, mature beyond her years and well liked by golf fans and competitors alike. She is responsible for sparking increased interest in our sport not just in her native South Korea and adopted homeland of New Zealand but also among juniors across the globe.”

Suffering soon to be over And by the end of the first quarter, it was forgotten anyway. You can’t blame them for doing what they do.

As the adage goes, “if you don’t like it, stop it”. But the Roughriders weren’t apt to do that on Saturday. Not with this defense.

So it’s finally come down to this. Three more practices, one day-before walk-through, and then four more quarters of football for the Riders Sunday in Montreal before we can bury this season.

I don’t expect many to attend the funeral.

I’ve taken to calling it “Football Purgatory”, this state where the Saskatchewan Roughriders currently find themselves. Not familiar with the term? Here’s the definition: “A place between Heaven and Hell, where the soul is not bad enough to be sent to an eternity of damnation in Hell, but not good enough to go to Heaven, so it is sent there temporarily where the person suffers, and is purified so that it can be sent to Heaven.”

Suffering. That’s what it is! And unfortunately for so many members of the 2015 Saskatchewan Roughriders, they didn’t get to feel the unequalled elation of that late-November day in 2013. Not even thought-of back then were Ryan Smith, Brett Smith, Keith Price, Jeff Knox Jr., Naaman Roosevelt, Nic Demski, Rory Connop, Anthony Allen, Jake Doughty or Matt Webster.

These guys are the future. It’s an exciting group and it’s important that their spirit not be broken! Gleaming, exciting days are ahead except we just can’t see them yet. Can’t see them for miles.

And, trust me, these players will never, ever again go through anything as bad as this season has been.

But just remember – we asked for it.

CFY’s Children’s Halloween Fair

Cornerstone Family and Youth volunteer Joan Bue (pictured) says, “What CFY does for families is amazing. A great example is the girls’ mentorship programs, which involve girls from both CES (Carlyle Elementary School) and GFK (Gordon F. Kells High School).”

Admission to the event was by donation and was “Done as a service to our community,” said CFY’s Jenn Sedor.

Volunteer Victoria Flynn of Carlyle applied her artistic skills to painting the face of “Leighton the Ladybug” at Cornerstone Family and Youth’s first annual Children’s Halloween Fair on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Carlyle Memorial Hall. The event offered area families an afternoon of activities. Along with face painting, children enjoyed games, dancing, concessions, a pumpkin carving contest and a costume contest. Flynn declared the event “Awesome.”

A reminder to slow down for emergency responders and highway workers Kelly Running Observer Staff

Concerns in the area have arisen regarding the rules of the road in regards to passing emergency vehicles as well as speeding in both construction zones and school zones.

While approaching emergency vehicles including ambulance, the fire department, and police drivers are reminded to slow down to a speed of 60 km/hr when stopped on the highway with its emergency lights in operation.

For any emergency personnel stopped on the side of the road working, if a vehicle slows down it lets that person know you’ve seen them, which ultimately makes them more comfortable in that

moment. If you don’t slow down you increase the risk of causing a collision.

This has been an issue local RCMP members have been dealing with. Although no one has been injured locally, emergency personnel have been feeling uncomfortable working in an area where laws regarding speed are being ignored.

Additionally members have found that they, along with other emergency vehicles, are attending calls with their emergency lights on, but drivers fail to pull over to give emergency vehicles the right of way. If you see emergency lights in your rear view, signal to pull over and slow down to allow the emergency vehicles to pass.

Volleyball Playoffs Rookie Boys (Gr. 7’s) will be practicing every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 – 5:00.

There is no school on Remembrance Day, November 11. The community is invited to the elementary and high school’s Remembrance Day Service in the high school gym on November 10th at 11:00AM. The afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 10, G.F. Kells High School will be holding a Career Fair for our grade 10 - 12 students. In attendance will

be recruiters from the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Regina, Sask. Polytechnic, Sask.

Trades, Minot University, Lakeland College, and many others.

GFK is currently running a Mom’s Pantry fundraiser. Mom’s Pantry has a variety of cooking and baking products. The fundraiser will run from now until November 13th.

The money raised will go towards school events, activities, and a hypnotist in December. Thanks to everyone in the community for helping us raise money to make our school a better place!

Fines begin at $140 for passing emergency vehicles with their lights activated and passing tow trucks with their lights activated at a speed greater than 60 km/hr.

Speed fines triple when passing highway workers/road construction, thus the minimum fine starts at $210.

Additionally members wanted to remind people that slowing down in school zones is extremely important as children may not be watching for vehicles, so it is necessary for drivers to slow to the posted sign and be alert while driving through these areas. Fines for speeding in a school zone begins at $140.

However, there is more to slowing down in these zones than the cost of a ticket. Recently a man was found guilty of dangerous driving causing death in Saskatchewan. Although the verdict came last month, the collision which killed the 18-year-old highway worker near Midale occurred in 2012. His failure to be alert and aware of his surroundings while driving cost a young woman her life and resulted in him being charged with being responsible for taking a life.

Even though most people think this couldn’t happen to them, many are stopped by the RCMP and given speeding tickets for their actions and failing to slow down in these situations.

In relation to this, Saskatchewan has relatively low fines for traffic infractions; however, in addition to paying the ticket, SGI has an Infraction Points System for good and poor drivers. Drivers with good records, who have had points added to their licence get a break when registering a vehicle.

Drivers in ill repute, who have negative points on their licence are required to pay an increased rate on their vehicle’s registration.

The Carlyle RCMP also have a traffic unit which works out of its detachment, this is why in the last year traffic tickets being given out have increased.

Moose Mountain Mustangs update The Moose Mountain Mustang Light Horse 4h Club have started our new year and held our annual registration night we have a big year coming up! On September 28 in the Manor Library we had our registration night with 5 members registering for this year which includes Kylee Dixon, Christin Dixon, Emily Nelson, Faith Nelson and Madison Cuddington.

We have had a great start to the year by attending the Cavalia Odysseo Horse show in Winnipeg.

It was amazing with talented performers in all aspects of riding and horsemanship. It really showed the bond between horses and their riders. It was enjoyed by all!

On October 19 we had our first general meeting with the 4h pledge

and the motto, minutes of the last meeting, treasurer’s report and elections for office members.

24/7 winter service now available on Highway Hotline With winter approaching, the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline is upgrading services to winter standards. The hotline will now report conditions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“This time of the year, road conditions can change rapidly,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Nancy Heppner said. “The Highway Hotline provides up-todate road information so travellers can plan their trips safely.”

The Highway Hotline is updated a minimum of three times per day, with additional updates provided as weather requires.

The hotline map is colour-coded according to highway conditions.

Users are reminded to click on specific sections of highway to get detailed information.

“We’re always fortunate, the community and surrounding area always supports the Poppy Campaign,” Clarene Makelky, Treasurer of the Carlyle branch, explained. “The Poppy Campaign we use locally, we utilize it in the local area, so Arcola, Kenosee Lake, and Carlyle. Arcola’s Legion has closed, but there’s a group there that continues to support the Poppy Campaign so we provide everything and the money they raise through that comes to our Legion.”

Makelky says the main focus of the local branch is healthcare because they want to ensure Veterans are taken care of, but by supporting healthcare in the area it also provides assistance to others in the area.

“In the past we’ve bought a rescue sled for the Fire Department, furniture for Moose Mountain Lodge, a urinalysis machine for the Carlyle Clinic, we’ve given a donation for a service dog specially trained to deal with veterans who have post traumatic stress, palliative care beds at Moose Mountain Lodge, a heart monitor halter for the Arcola Family Clinic, an AED in conjunction with the Lions for the Carlyle Fire Department as well as a child adaptor kit for it, two specialized wheelchairs for Moose Mountain Lodge that allow staff to adjust the position of the client and give treatment in it while allowing flexibility of movement without actually having to lift clients,” Makelky said.

“Last year the Poppy Fund was donated to STARS because we feel in the rural area that is very important and our donation was for supplies and equipment, but was the equivalent of STARS being able to fly for one day.”

Currently the Legion is working towards buying a Venus Doplar which uses ultrasound to see blood clots and circulation.

“We’re putting the money in place to purchase a [Venus Doplar] or the Arcola Clinic,” Makelky said. “It’s not easy for people to travel to Estevan, Weyburn, or even Regina, so having this equipment here means people don’t have to travel.”

Since the Poppy Fund is limited in what it can be donated towards, the Carlyle branch also conducts other fundraisers such as catering, to help with educational school programs, their annual literary contest in the schools, they’ve supported an Air Cadets trip, they look after and have been upgrading the Legion Hutt which is available to be rented at a reasonable rate for gatherings of approximately 40 people, and rather recently the Legion partnered with the local schools to bring in Holocaust survivor Eva Olssen to speak.

Remembrance Day Ceremony to be held at CES Kelly Running Observer Staff

Early in the morning on Nov. 11, 1918, an armistice was signed agreeing to end hostilities between Germany and the Entente during World War I. At the 11th hour it would come into effect. The war did not conclude until the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919.

Now on “the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” we gather to remember those who gave their lives while in the line of duty.

Since the minute of silence is to take place at 11 a.m., the majority of the program at the school occurs before 11 a.m.

In Carlyle a Remembrance Day service will be held at 10:30 a.m. by the Carlyle Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion at the Carlyle Elementary School.

In addition to attending the local Remembrance Day Ceremony on Nov. 11, Veterans Canada recommends people take the opportunity

“to recognize the contribution our Veterans have made and to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of Canada.”

This includes wearing a poppy, an emblem which was made a strong symbol during World War I with the poem, In Flanders Fields.

“They are our grandfathers, brothers, mothers and sisters, neighbours... heroes. Canada’s Veterans - their courage, service and sacrifices have kept us strong, proud and free,” Veterans Canada states.

Other ideas Veterans Canada shares is to send a postcard for peace, speak with a friend or relative who has fought in the Canadian Armed Forces, and plant a Garden of Remembrance.

“However, you choose to remember Canada’s Veterans, be sure to share it with everyone you know.

Together, it is our duty to pass on our gratitude and keep their legacy and memories alive. This Remembrance Day, Remember Them,” Veterans Canada states.

At last year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies Amilee Waelchli asked to have her photo with local Mounties.

Support the Legion through buying a poppy and help remember those who gave their lives for our country by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11.

Congratulations to Shirley Bendtsen on receiving her commemorative gift for her 11 volunteer years of service (9 of these as Chairperson) in the Alida Housing Authority, from both the Saskatchewan Housing Authority Corporation and the Alida Housing Authority. A job well done Shirley and you’ll be missed as a board member.

Gloria Girard spent a few days in Calgary visiting with her son Steven, Brandi Bradshaw and granddaughter Nora. Then she went on to Radium Hot Springs, BC to attend a girl’s get-together before returning home to Alida.

The Alida community sends their best wishes and congratulations to Margaret Gervais (formally of Alida) for her 85th birthday on October 30 which she celebrated in Alameda. Eleanor Harrison was able to attend the celebrations.

A great time was had by all who attended the Halloween Dance at the Alida Hall on Friday, October 30 they all seemed to enjoy their evening out.

Intent: The proposed Official Community Plan bylaw will establish municipal land use policies, goals and objectives for the RM. The proposed Zoning Bylaw will implement land use policies, establish zoning districts, prescribe permitted and discretionary uses within each zoning district, establish a development permit process, prescribe a process for appeals and provide a provision for amendments. The proposed fees bylaw will establish fees for municipal services, including planning and development services.

Affected Land: The proposed bylaws will affect all land within the incorporated area of the Rural Municipality.

Reason: The Official Community Plan will provide the Rural Municipality with direction on development decisions and municipal goals. The Zoning Bylaw will help direct and manage growth and development within the Rural Municipality. The fees bylaw will provide a schedule of fees to be charged for services provided by the RM. Public Inspection: Any person may inspect the proposed bylaws at the RM office during normal office hours. Copies of the bylaws are available at cost.

Public Hearing: Council will hold a public hearing on Wednesday November 18, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. The public hearing will be held at the RM office in Alameda, SK. Any person or group that wants to comment on the proposed bylaws is welcome to attend or to submit comments prior to the meeting. Council will consider all comments received.

Family members gathered in Wawota on Saturday 31st for a grave side service for Inger Wilson.

She had passed away earlier in the month. The service was followed by a luncheon for 35-40 people attending.

Word has been received of the passing of a former Wawota resident. Gordon Wilson of Biggar has passed away on October 7th at the age of 103. He and his wife, Eileen (Husband) had been married for 78years. They lived in Wawota and Moosomin and then Biggar.

Sympathy to Eileen, Marilyn, Barrie, Glennis and Margery.

Michael and Evelyn Green recently visited family members in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Brantford and Waterloo, Ontario. While there they attended the wedding of Patricia’s son and Evelyn’s oldest grandson, James Freeman to Tricia Doherty of Wateroo.

Congratulations to Neil and Barbara Dennis who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday, October 25th with family and friends joining them at the Wawota Town Hall for supper and a social evening.

The Moosomin General Football Team finished the regular season

on October 23rd in Moosomin with a 34- 20 win over the Neepawa Team. On October 31st the Generals travelled to Dauphin for the semifinal game against the Dauphin Clippers. After a well played game in poor weather conditions the Generals lost the game 15-13. This finishes the 2015 year with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses. Congratulations on a entertaining and successful year!

So many books .... so little time!

On November 10th The Giller Prize will be awarded to the best book written by a Canadian author. Each year I try to read as many as possible of those books nominated but the short list only comes out on October 5th. To date I have read, “Outline” by Rachel Cusk, “Daydreams of Angels”

by Heather O’Neill and “Martin John” by Anakana Schofield. I have the other two on order “Fifteen Dogs”

by Andre Alexis and “Arvida” by Samuel Archibald. If they arrive at the library this Tuesday I could have them read them by the deadline!

My comment on the three books I have read is that many of the younger writers’ stories are hard to follow, with a bit here and a bit there. Sometimes I am not sure of what is going on but by the time the story is done it is a little more understandable.

Another month has a beginning, today FRIENDS come to my mind.

I was at the supper in Wawota on Sunday evening - a delicious turkey supper and I thought there are people from all the surrounding areas - how nice it is to see friends supporting one another in whatever takes place in smaller communities, and at this time of the year we are collecting for the samaritanís purse, food banks, clothing for less fortunate folks than ourselves and the list can go on. I think these are all friends ñmost people we will never meet. While I am mentioning the clothingóLangbank U.C.W. are looking for clothing, St. Annís Parish are taking food and clothing, also gifts for the Samaritan boxes.

Condolences to the Olver families of Kipling in the loss of a father Elwood and a son Lorne this past week.

Talking to a friend in Regina the other day Charlotte Shoemakerótells me she is doing good and was happy to be able for Milton, herself and daughter Laurie to attend the White Coat Ceremony for their granddaughter Kelsey Balogh in Saskatoon, Kelsey is attending the college of pharmacy. Milton and Charlotte also visited with her brother Kevin and Ronda Mercer and family in Lemberg the following weekend.

George and Lorraine Smyth had their daughters Kathleen Istace, Pat Henneberg and children Graham and Claire visit them on Sunday to help George celebrate his birthday.

The folks from Kennedy wish Ron and Val Bourhis much happiness in their new home at Round Lakeóthey left Kennedy at the end of October.

When Grace meets Moses

By Linda Wegner When we left Moses last week he was still in the desert. Forty years earlier he’d lost his place of honour, wealth and privilege after attempting to intervene when an Egyptian knocked down an Hebrew man. The next day his “saviour” complex showed up again but this time it was two Hebrew men who were fighting and, once more, Moses stepped in. Neither of his heroic and well meaning interventions saved him from the scorn and anger of both nationalities.

News spread quickly to the palace and Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, ordered his execution. Moses lost no time in getting out of town and the next time we see him, he’s sitting beside a well in the land of Midian.

Moses married a local girl and the couple had a child. Meanwhile back in Egypt, Pharaoh made sure the Hebrews were well subdued and burdened with work. Long story

short: Pharaoh died and the enslaved children of Israel groaned under the load of their captivity.

Though this is not recorded in Scripture, I wonder if Moses wrestled with some of the same questions that I (and you?) have entertained: Does God have anything more for me than this? What about my dreams of serving Him? Does He remember where and who I am?

But it was there, crossing the burning sand, that grace met Moses.

A burning bush ignited through spontaneous combustion was nothing new…but this was different… it burned but wasn’t consumed. Moses stopped. God spoke. And from that encounter, hope was renewed.

The account of this story in the book of Acts puts it this way: “This Moses, whom they rejected…is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush.”

Never give up - grace is amazing!

There are a lot of ways to feed your baby’s brain! When you talk or read to your baby, play or sing with them, and nourish them with healthy food and love, you are actually “feeding” your baby’s brain.

The developing brain needs two basics ~ safety and positive experiences.

1. Create a safe environment – When a baby feels stressed, their brain develops a chemical called cortisol. High levels of cortisol can actually slow brain development.

By making your baby’s world safe, responsive and predictable, you can reduce your baby’s stress level.

Remove any physical threats.

Respond to them when they are crying and create a routine so that they learn what to expect from their world.

2. Provide positive experiences – Your baby’s brain learns best

when it is challenged with new information. Exposing your baby to new experiences can help strengthen existing connections in their brains, as well as make new ones. Even a simple activity such as taking your baby to the library or out for groceries can “feed” your baby’s brain.

The good news is that building your child’s brain isn’t hard. Many of the things we already do as parents help contribute to our babies’ brains Things like cuddling and reading are important. You can read to your child, right from when they are in your tummy. When you are rocking your baby, you are building an emotional connection that leads to healthy relationships. Talk. Talk.

Talk. When you talk to your baby, the pathways for language become stronger. The best thing that we can give our children is our time!

By Calvin Daniels With the changing of the guard in Parliament after the recent federal election comes many people imploring the new Liberal government to backtrack on what the Conservative government had already done.

While that is a rather natural occurrence, obviously the Liberals cannot suddenly undo everything the Stephen Harper government has done.

Nor should the Liberals consider anything so grandiose as a complete reversal of Conservative legislation. We do not need a yoyo effect of parties bouncing back and forth of policies with every change of government.

It does not matter which party a person follows not every piece of legislation they enact is golden, any more so than they are all bad for Canada.

That is often the greatest shortfall of party politics; the fact one party rarely sees it as wise to nod their head in agreement with an idea put forward by an opposition party.

It lies with Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and his new cabinet to analyze what Conservative legislation needs to now be tweaked to make it better for Canada.

There are of course many suggesting what needs to be done. In some cases those suggestions should be heeded, in other cases quickly ignored.

And in some cases changes which might be warranted will be impossible too, depending on what condition the Conservatives left things.

There is, for example, little chance to do anything in terms of creating a stronger Canadian Wheat Board after the under-valued sell-off of CWB assets by the Conservatives.

And, like it or not, the new Trans-Pacific Partnership deal is here to stay.

In other instances the Liberals are going to face some serious lobbying calling on a return to an earlier time.

In some cases, they should hold the course. An example would be the move away from the far from universal door-to-door delivery of mail to the use of corner mailboxes, a system that will make everyone relatively equal in terms of home mail delivery.

Another issue where a lobby is already gearing up sees a number of nature groups calling on the

government to announce an immediate pause in transfers of grasslands formerly managed by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) until a plan is in place to protect their ecological values. The group includes; Nature Canada, Nature Saskatchewan and the Alberta Wilderness Association.

“We simply cannot afford to lose more grasslands -- the most imperilled ecosystem in Canada” said Stephen Hazell, Nature Canada’s Director of Conservation in a recent release.

“Saskatchewan grasslands are critical habitat for threatened species such as Greater Sage Grouse, Burrowing Owl, Swift Fox and Ferruginous Hawk as well as providing a carbon sink for greenhouse gas emissions. Transfers of management responsibility of PFRA community pastures to the Saskatchewan government should be halted until Canada and Saskatchewan agree on a legally binding plan to protect the ecological values of these grasslands”.

“Given its election commitment to National Wildlife Areas, the new government should move forward quickly on public consultations towards establishing a National Wildlife Area for the 28,000 hectare Govenlock community pasture to protect wildlife and the carbon sink while providing for ongoing cattle ranching” said Jordan Ignatiuk, Nature Saskatchewan’s executive director in the same release. “Financial arrangements need to be put in place to ensure protection of species at risk and the carbon sink in those PFRA grasslands already transferred to the province. Manitoba has moved in this direction on its 24 PFRA community pastures, now it is time for Saskatchewan and Canada to plan how to protect the ecological values of the 62 PFRA community pastures covering 720,000 hectares in our province”.

While such issues are rarely black and white, this is one which government needs to get right.

There is great value to our wildlife resource, to their habitat, and to grass for grazing. It needs to be properly managed.

That is one of the roles of the federal government, to protect natural resources such as

wildlife and waterways, and fauna. In general, the Conservatives have fallen far short of that responsibility, so this country would be well-served if the Liberals pause to assess if they can improve in areas such as the future of PFRA grasslands.

OBITUARIES Marlene Margaret Hayward 1945 - 2015 Marlene Margaret Hayward passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Estevan, SK at the age of 70 years.

Marlene will be lovingly remembered by her children, Melody (Robert), Kevin (Brenda), Douglas (Melissa) and Brian (Jackie); grandchildren, Steven, Douglas, Jordyn, Brooklynn, Sidney, Dakota, Jessica, Chelsey and Lena; great grandchildren, Jess and Isaac and sister in law Eleanor (Hank).

Marlene was predeceased by her husband Edwin and their infant son Michel Edwin; brother James and sister in law Lois.

The Memorial Service was held on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Giles Anglican Church with Rev. Mark Osborne officiating. The reception took place in the Church social hall.

War amputee helps build lasting legacy OTTAWA, Oct./Nov. 2015 - Doug Cushway lost both legs below the knee while serving in the Second World War. He received his first pair of artificial legs on his 21st birthday and has never looked back.

Doug went on to have a career in agriculture, raise a family and inspire others by skating, curling, golfing and cross-country skiing. He has devoted his lifetime of experience to The War Amps and child amputees, holding many positions over the years, at the national and branch levels of the Association.

Through The War Amps, Doug and his fellow war amputees have built a lasting legacy for child amputees in Canada. The Association’s tradition of “amputees helping amputees” will continue through the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

For Angie Ducharme, a graduate of CHAMP, war amputees have been her role models. “I feel really privileged to know war amputees like Doug and for everything they’ve helped me with while growing up in CHAMP,” she says. “Some of the things they’ve taught me, I hope I can teach to the younger Champs.”

Doug used to lay a wreath every year on behalf of The War Amps at his local Remembrance Day ceremony but has proudly passed on this tradition to Angie and other members of CHAMP. As part of The War Amps Operation Legacy, Angie helps carry on the message of Remembrance and educates others about the sacrifices of Canada’s veterans.

Calling it “one good thing that came out of the war,” Doug says, “The CHAMP Program has done a lot since it started. It makes me feel very good that it’s still going strong today.”

The War Amps programs are made possible through donations to its Key Tag Service. Donors may also choose to leave a gift or charitable bequest in their wills to help The War Amps continue to meet its commitments to amputees long into the future.
