Although widespread weather warnings made for lower than usual riders’ attendance, Boogie Fest founder and organizer Larry Brady of Carlyle said after the rally: “It was an excellent ride. I’m very happy with how the day went.”

Fellow founder and organizer Trevor Dalziel of Carlyle agreed, adding: “I’m very happy. We’ve

had better days weather-wise. I got caught in a little hail and rain in Redvers and Alida, but it was still a good day and a good ride.”

The fundraiser-now in its 14th year-began simply as a fun day out for local motorcycle enthusiasts who also wanted to support the local swimming pool. Since then, it has grown to be a muchanticipated event and an important fundraiser for Carlyle’s Cresent Point Leisure Complex.

“We wanted to do a bike rally and the pool needed support, so it grew from there,” says Brady.

“Our first year, we made $1,000. Our best year we made $40,000 and last year, we made $15,000. I’m

very happy with this year’s ride.”

The fundraiser hosted events for all ages, with Friday featuring a free lunch in Carlyle Home Hardware’s parking lot, which also allowed attendees a last-chance opportunity to purchase tickets for this year’s prize, a like-new, low-mileage 2004 Harley Davidson Heritage Soft Tail. This year’s lucky winner of the mint-condition motorcycle was Dawn Faber of Carlyle.

The search for the yearly prize starts early, as Boogie Fest organizers aim to get raffle ticket sales underway in time for Christmas.

Dalziel found this year’s bike via Kijiji, and says that the previous owner had bought the bike and put it into storage, before deciding to sell it in 2014.

Even those who don’t own or win a motorcycle are urged to join in the spirit of the event and dress like a biker, as official Boogie Fest Tshirts and hoodies (featuring a new design every year) are sold at Kings Department Store.

Even the very young enjoyed Boogie Fest, thanks to Cornerstone Family and Youth, who hosted the free-of-charge CFY Carnival at the Lions Park Pavilion on Friday. Children enjoyed carnival games, bouncy houses, three mascots, a toy raffle, face painting and entertainment by a balloon artist, while volunteers cooked up hot dogs and hamburgers for sale.

The Lions Park Pavilion was also the setting for Saturday’s free pancake breakfast, held just before the main event-the Poker Rally and parade downtown by the riders.

Hot Smoked Salmon

Ingredients

4 cups (1 L) boiling water 1/2 cup (125 mL) sea salt, kosher salt or pickling salt 1/2 cup (125 mL) packed brown sugar 1/4 cup (60 mL) granulated sugar 1 onion, sliced 1 piece (2 inches/ 5 cm long) fresh ginger, grated (or 1 tbsp ground ginger) 4 cups (1 L) cold water 8 sprigs fresh dill 1 side of salmon, (skin-on), about 1.35 kg 1 tbsp (15 mL) black peppercorns, coarsely ground1 tsp (5 mL) ground coriander 1/4 cup (60 mL) finely chopped fresh dilllemon wedges Preparation

In large heatproof glass measure or bowl, combine boiling water, salt, brown sugar, granulated sugar, onion and ginger; stir until salt is dissolved. Add cold water; let cool. Add dill sprigs.

Trim 1 inch (2.5 cm) off thinner long edge of fish; remove any remaining pin bones along centre. Place fish, flesh side down, in large shallow glass or ceramic dish, folding over thin tail end if necessary to fit. Pour in brine mixture to cover; weigh down fish with plate(s) to keep submerged. Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours.

Remove fish from brine; rinse, pat dry and place, skin side down, on rack.

Sprinkle with pepper, coriander, and dill. Refrigerate until flesh is tacky to the touch, 1 to 2 hours. (Make-ahead: Wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.)

Meanwhile, soak 2 cups wood chips in water for 1 hour; drain. Set foil drip pan under one rack of two-burner barbecue or under centre rack of three-burner barbecue. Heat opposite burner(s) to medium-low. Seal soaked chips in foil to make packet; poke several holes in top.

Place over lit burner. (For charcoal grill, set drip pan under one side of grill and arrange hot coals on other side. Place packet directly on coals.) Close lid and let smoke fill barbecue.

Place fish, skin side down, on greased grill over drip pan; cover and smoke until fish flakes easily when tested, about 1-3/4 hours. (If skin sticks to grill, slide fish off skin onto platter.) Serve with lemon wedges.

The Manor School Drama Club worked hard on their production, Attention Detention written by Bradley Hayward, which was held on Thursday, June 18, at 7 p.m.

The students have been working tirelessly since the end of April and as they practiced around work and sports were able to bring a serious topic of bullying to light in a comedic way.

Attention Detention opens with four students in detention. Each one, typically ideal students, were all 10 minutes late to school. The principal is determined to get to the bottom of this and begins quizzing the students about why they were late.

In a quick set change, the students each detail reasons for why they’re late including excuses such as being sick or allergic to school, having a drama club emergency, being held hostage by senior citizens, and a Monster Spelling Bee were the excuses given for their tardiness.

The principal was unsure of the stories, until his daughter told him about the Monster Spelling Bee which wasn’t just a large competition, but a competition against three colourful monsters.

As this confirms his suspicions, he gets the truth from his students in the end. The students admit they were late to school because they wanted to avoid the bullies. If they were late the bullies would already be in class and if they received detention they would be later leaving the school than the bullies.

The principal realizes each of the stories the students told all involved bullies and they explain it’s because they’re always thinking about being bullied. The principal vows to establish a better policy and to help prevent bullying in the school in the end as he and his daughter head home.

Performing in Attention Detention were Destiny Riddell as Janice and Kat; Vincent Shackleton as Adam and Murray; Desiree Riddell as Tanis and Bernice; Trista Kennett as Marissa and Stella; Kyle Bye as Principal, Mr. Hook, Mitch, and Brandon; Elizabeth McWhan as Doctor and Snookie; Hannah Carley-Littlechief as Nurse Rita and Zellnoid; Dominique Jurista as Nurse Lucy and Yiggle; Madison Cuddington as Miss Travis; Ashtyn Preston as Jackie; and Jeremy Haight as the moderator.

Micheline Biermann was the stage manager and set designer, while Caydence Chapman and Shay-lynne Englot worked lighting and backstage, and Aiza Weir helded as part of the backstage crew.

Teacher-directors included Korinn Riddell, Lucas Bartsch, and Kathryn Hunt.

The performance, although it touched on serious matter, was made humorous and the audience laughed often showing their appreciation of the students’ efforts on-stage.

Arcola Optimist Club: Embedded in the Community Lynne Bell

The Arcola Optimist Club’s original mandate is “Friend of Youth.” However, since its inception over thirty years ago, their service to the community has grown beyond that simple phrase as club members have not only made contributions to countless community projects; they are also currently at work restoring two local landmarks-the historic Mac Theatre and the Optimist Legion Hall.

“We began the theatre renovations from the inside out,” says Glen Lawson, secretary-treasurer of the Arcola Optimist Club. “And we’re doing the same with the (Optimist) Legion Hall.”

“With the theatre, it goes back to 1990-1991 when the Optimists re-opened the theatre,” adds Lawson. “The idea was to provide another recreational and cultural activity for kids and families throughout the winter, by showing movies and charging reasonable admission prices. The guys who started it really just wanted to break even. It was more of a community service than a long-term plan to revitalize the building, but as they made a little bit more (money), it was put back into the theatre.”

“The theatre has had new seats, the digital projection system and improved sound for a while now. Now that the roof is finished, we’re putting on new stucco and also replacing the windows and doors and rebuilding the awning.”

“Our goal is to preserve the theatre,” says Lawson. “The proceeds from this year’s spring concert with The Chris Henderson Band along with our portion of this year’s snowmobile rally proceeds will be ploughed back into continuing upgrades to the theatre.”

The Optimists have welcomed a who’s who of Saskatchewan country music to The Mac, including Blake Berglund, The Johner Brothers and Codie Prevost, as well as Nashville singer-songwriters Victoria Banks, Phil Barton and Emily Shackleton.

Singer-songwriter Chris Henderson-the featured performer at this year’s Optimist Club spring concert- says: “Good news travels fast in the music industry and I’ve heard nothing but good things about The Mac. It’s a beautiful room. I talked to Codie Prevost and Blake Berglund at this year’s SCMAs (Saskatchewan Country Music Awards) and they both said that The Mac is a great venue.”

“I’m thrilled that there is another venue and another community working hard to keep live music alive and well. We could use 50 more groups like the Arcola Optimists in Western Canada.”

Members of Arcola’s Optimist Club have made contributions to a myriad of community projects since the club’s inception over three decades ago. Secretary-treasurer Glen Lawson says, “We’re embedded in the community and we appreciate the support of the community.”(Staff photo by Lynne Bell) “A lot of different groups and artists praise the theatre’s acoustics,” says Lawson. “Artists say that playing our concerts at The Mac isn’t like playing at a bar. People are actually looking at them and giving them their complete attention while they play.”

“Blake (Berglund) and Codie (Prevost) are good musical ambassadors for us,” adds Lawson. “The Mac is a really good place for that kind of concert.

It’s evolved into a kind of tradition for our club and it’s one we want to keep going.”

Lawson says the theatre is also used for youth activities. “For example, our drama kids put on performances there before they headed to regionals in Moosomin. The Optimists also helped with their travel costs to the drama festival.”

Another project, the Optimist Legion Hall, is also undergoing a revamp, courtesy of the club.

“The Optimist Club took it on when the Legion disbanded,” says Lawson. “It’s a great meeting place for a number of groups-Sparks, Brownies and Girl Guides, for example.”

“We took on ownership and assumed all responsibility for the upkeep, the utilities and everything else.”

“Like the theatre, we started repairs and

renovations from the inside out. We had the floor refinished and then we realized we had roof trouble,” says Lawson. “In the end, we’ll have all new windows and doors, a new roof and new siding.

We’ll also have had all of the water damage inside the building fixed.”

“As a club, we’ve taken on a number of things,” he adds. “We always come back to our original mandate, which is to enhance the cultural and recreational opportunities for youth in our community. If it at all relates to a recreational and cultural activity that youth are involved in, we’ll consider it.”

Lawson explains that while the Optimists are committed to enhancing opportunities for area youth, their mandate is far from inflexible.

“We made a donation to the Moose Mountain Marathon, even though that might seem like it’s a different mandate because it’s not strictly an event for youth; it is an event that benefits student athletics at Arcola School.”

“We postponed a few things and decided to make a contribution towards furnishing the new clinic, which ultimately benefits everyone in the community.”

The club’s website at www.arcolaoptimist.com outlines some of the Optimists’ many community contributions, including pictures of Arcola’s playpark. “ The playpark is one of our projects,” says Lawson. “In the past, we’ve also contributed to high school rodeo, sponsored figure skating teaching courses and snowmobile safety courses.”

“We’ve sponsored sports teams and made contributions towards uniforms for hockey and ball teams and to the Vipers volleyball team.”

“What allows us to do this is really the great support we receive from the community-businesses and individuals.”

“And of course, our biggest fundraiser is our annual snowmobile rally,” adds Lawson.

The Arcola Optimists’ annual snowmobile rally has just celebrated its 22nd year. Proceeds from the event have not only enabled the club to contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars to community projects; it is also designed to allow other groups to participate in fundraising during the day-long rally, which is always held on the last weekend in January.

“The snowmobile rally has really grown,” says Lawson. “It began a year ago when the club made a commitment of $50,000 over 10 years to Prairie Place Hall. They did it well ahead of schedule, in two or three years.”

“We’ve had some guys in the club that had some big ideas and that forces you to follow Working from the inside out, Arcola’s Optimist Club is nearing the conclusion of their premiere projectthe restoration of the historic Mac Theatre. The Moose Mountain Knights of Columbus Council 10317 of Carlyle has earned one of the organization’s top awards-the distinction of Star Council-for the 2013-2014 fraternal year.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic lay organization and has over 1.8 million members in over 15,000 councils around the world. The Star Council award recognizes overall excellence in the areas of membership recruitment and retention, promotion of the fraternal insurance program and sponsorship of service-oriented activities. The award was presented to the Moose Mountain Knights at a special ceremony on June 14.

The organization is headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut and Chief Executive Officer, Carl A. Anderson told the Moose Mountain Knights: “Please accept my sincere congratulations upon attaining this prestigious award. Your dedication to the Order is seen in the high standard of excellence you have achieved.”

“At the same time, I encourage you to carry forward this enthusiasm to meet the challenges that will face the Knights of Columbus in the years ahead. May this award be a reminder and an inspiration to the members of your council to continue to promote the ideals of Columbianism for the good of the Church, your community and the Order.”

“Receiving the Star Council Award is quite an honour for us,” said Jerry Weber, head of the Moose Mountain Knights of Columbus council.

“We’re extremely proud of this accomplishment.”

The Moose Mountain Knights of Columbus members are from Carlyle, Carnduff, Oxbow and Cantal Parish, which encompasses Alida, Manor and area.

The Moose Mountain Knights have hosted an annual snowmobile rally for over 20 years, along with other volunteer fundraisers, including cooking and serving the supper at Carlyle’s annual Boogie Fest. The group maintains the Kenosee Boys and Girls Camp and the Mother Teresa Centre, and supports Crescent Point Leisure Complex in Carlyle and the Carlyle and District Food Bank. Members also donate Christmas hampers as well as privately supporting individuals in need.

Stoughton Daze full of fun July 3-5 Kelly Running Observer Staff

Every year the Stoughton Ag Society hosts Stoughton Daze with the help of numerous community partners. This year’s events will be held from Friday, July 3, to Sunday, July 5, with action and excitement held each day for all ages.

Friday night includes the annual Stoughton Daze Golf Tourney with registration at 5 p.m. and the tee off at 6 p.m. This will be followed by a lip sync battle at 10 p.m. and will be held at the Crossroads Inn. The next day will see the Stoughton Volunteer Fire Department host breakfast at the fire hall between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Shortly after breakfast people will begin lining Main Street where the Lions Parade will begin at 10 a.m.

Found at the Stoughton Legion, just north of the Fairgrounds, will be a quilting display with vendors between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The Fairground Festivities on Saturday will see wagon rides between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., a slow pitch tourney beginning at 11:30 a.m. (contact Rory Clark to enter at 306-457-2422). Food, popcorn, and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Kids’ entertainment will be on with bouncy houses and face painting available between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., while Gainer the Gopher will be making a trip down to Stoughton to say hi and enjoy the day between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.

the band “Arnie” playing between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. But the party doesn’t stop as the Crossroads Inn has a DJ lined up to begin at 9:30 p.m.

The Fairgrounds will be full on Sunday, July 5, as well with action beginning with breakfast between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.

A church service will be held at 9 a.m. for those interested, while 9 a.m. will also mark the start of the 5K Colour Run/Walk where the Stoughton Swimming Pool invites participants to “splash” themselves with colour. Finally the New Hope Horse Club will be hosting a fun horse show throughout the day with registration happening at 8:30 a.m. the day of.

The Arcola Fair and Stampede Inc. is excited for this year’s Antique Ag Daze which will be hosted in a one-day extravaganza on Sunday, July 5.

The day will begin with a pancake breakfast held at the fire hall where the volunteer fire department will be cooking.

Following breakfast, everyone is invited to park or sit along Main Street where the parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Last year saw everything from a horse drawn carriage to antique tractors, to floats made by young kids. For more information or to enter a float contact, Brian at (306)455-2437.

Also to be found during the day is an array of excitement for people of all ages with the collector car show and shine held in the rink throughout the day. A quilt show and exhibit is going to be on display as well.

Children’s activities are planned throughout the day with Freitag’s Petting Zoo being set up, which is always a big draw amongst youth.

Planned again is both a heavy horse pull and a tractor pull, while a threshing demo and stationary baler demo will be held to help show people how far farming has come.

Antique machinery displays will be set up in the fairgrounds along with rope making, shingle making, and blacksmithing demonstrations.

A cattle breeders showcase will bring forth the other side of agriculture, focusing on cattle.

Food concession throughout the day will be available on the fair grounds, while supper will be served in the hall with Slykhuis’ serving a delicious meal.

Saskatchewan Express will also be out for the day with shows beginning at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to be enjoyed.

Cost for the day is $5 for an adult, $2 for kids 6-12, and free for kids aged 5 and under.

Misconceptions

The other day as I was perusing CBC I came across an article I thought was rather informative.

The author, Kim Wheeler, wrote a piece titled, “Indian Status: 5 more things you need to know.”

It led me to read one written by Howard Adler, “Indian Status: 5 things you need to know.” Both articles have points that overlap, but with National Aboriginal Day Kelly Running having been on June 21 I thought Observer Staff it was appropriate to bring up these misconceptions.

Anyway, many people commonly have misconceptions about what the government does or doesn’t do regarding Certificate of Indian Status under the federal Indian Act because many people are removed from it, so they are unaware of its actualities.

For instance you would assume that all First Nations would be eligible for a status card, but as both writers point out, this is untrue as Metis and Inuit people were historically not recognized as Aboriginal people and were therefore not included in the Indian Act of 1876.

It’s more complicated than this though and under the law the government doesn’t recognize certain people as status for various other reasons as well.

Being that the Act is rooted in the mindset of politicians from the 1800s it is actually rooted in assimilation according to Adler, which as a history buff I would agree with. At the time the government was looking to assimilate people and this is why under the act if someone with a status card has a child with a non-status person then their child can obtain a status card, however, if that child grows up to have a baby with a non-status person that baby is not entitled to registration under the Indian Act. Additionally status used to be passed down according to gender and the status of their partner until 1985 when the Act was amended.

Another misconception regarding status cards is that it gives First Nation people access to free university and no taxes. The federal government does have an education fund set up which is distributed to First Nations bands, but it is limited and there are often more people going to school than there are funds available. Additionally there are standards of schooling to be met such as maintaining a certain grade point average, which means someone may receive help towards schooling one year but may not receive it again the next year.

One of the bigger myths that is out there includes tax exemptions. Tax exemptions are extremely limited and in a nutshell is specifically focused on goods and services and income only on a reserve. So, if someone is not living on a reserve they are paying taxes.

Finally one of the big ones I’ve heard people complain about in the past is unlimited access to health care, this too is untrue. In fact health care coverage becomes more and more limited according to Wheeler and Aboriginal Affairs will only cover certain prescriptions, dental care, eye care, and medical devices. Besides, all Canadians have Universal Health Care.

I personally don’t know if an Act created in 1876 is the best one to follow because of the mindset of that time, but this subject is a sensitive one and I’m not sure if it were to be revamped if everyone would be able to come away happy anyway. Do you get rid of it completely? Do you scrap the 1876 version and update it? What would a 2015 version look like?

They’re questions I don’t think anyone has a perfect answer to. Canada has become a mosaic of cultures, we’re a blended society, and we are where we are today because of our history and the only way to move forward is to learn how to do that together.

To become educated on misconceptions and embrace that we’re all in this together.

Striking the right note Striking the right note We were vacationing in the United States in early July one year and decided we should join in the American tradition of taking in a ball game on the 4th. Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego was our chosen venue and after an enjoyable Padres game we were treated to spectacular fireworks set to the kind of music that couldn’t help but fan the flames of patriotism.

When it was time for “The Star Spangled Banner” the stadium erupted as people got to their feet, waved flags, and sang with fervour.

The melody makes it a challenging but beautiful anthem to sing and it was thrilling to take in. I remember feeling a sense of regret that I had never experienced this type of zeal in my home and native land. We are more subdued. We don’t make displays of it. We are proud, just not blatantly so.

I grew up in a time when there was great concern over the influence of the United States on our country. Politically, socially, economically… there was an expressed fear that all aspects of life were at risk of being overtaken by American thought, belief and perspective. Canadian content rules dominated much of the conversation related to media. The counter argument claimed we were creating a climate of protectionism and that Canadian produced content needed to stand on its own in carving out an audience.

America was the land of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Canada was the nation of friendly people; the polite peacemakers; the country with the Welcome Mat always in view. Still is. Switzerland’s women’s soccer coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg even made note of it last weekend. After being defeated by Canada, ending their World Cup quest, the coach took the time to remark, “I would really, from the bottom of my heart, thank the Canadian audience and the Canadian fans. We had a lot of fun…And we found everyone is very friendly. The welcome was fair and welcoming.”

Of course we are much more than the nice guys. Canada is a nation of adventurers, leaders, entertainers, entrepreneurs, business people, scientists, athletes, students, caregivers, soldiers, academics, manufacturers, inventors, teachers, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters.

makes when the international community needs to be consulted. We are not the nation expected to take the lead in military matters. Yet what we have to offer is not to be dismissed.

Yes, there is much to Shelley Luedtke sing about with pride in this country. There is also much that will require its citizens to consider soberly as we think about the direction we are heading. Depending upon the perspective of those expressing an opinion, we are either a nation on the rise or a nation in decline.

Then again, perhaps both are true.

A nation is never static. It is in a continuous state of change, moving in one direction or another, transitioning, adapting and adjusting; socially, economically, and politically. Because a nation is its people, and since its people are always in a state of change, the nation is as well. If we do or don’t like the current direction we need look no further than ourselves and the opportunities we have had to impact our communities or perhaps the times we have stood back and not let our voice be heard.

We can and will continue to disagree on the handling of our natural resources, the economy, environment, immigration and social issues.

We can and will continue to elect different governments in the hopes of different outcomes. We can and will continue to wonder about the future of education, health care and the freedom of speech.

But we can and will continue to do so only because Canada is a place where education is attainable, healthcare is available and freedom of expression is constitutional.

Canada is not perfect…because its people are not perfect…and Canada is, at its essence, its people. We may not be the biggest player in the world, but we certainly have a position to play.

Three weeks ago I got to experience that goose bump moment of singing “O Canada” with 53,000 people. As I joined the maple-leaf wearing, red and white clad fans bursting with Canadian pride I was reminded that when it comes to patriotism it’s not about the resonance of the anthem, but about the people standing shoulder to shoulder who are singing along. That’s my outlook.

In the spirit of Father’s Day, my lovely editor and I both agreed to suspend our usual debate and instead, use this space to honour our dads.

My darling dad has been experiencing some health issues that unfortunately, sometimes seem to change the very essence of who he is. Yesterday, as I paid him a visit, Father’s Day card in hand (which is all he has ever wanted, “Just a card, Honey, just a card...”). I didn’t know what to expect, which is now the new normal for him and for us, his family.

As it turns out, this Father’s Day, I was given the gift of a wonderful, three-hour visit full of laughs and great memories, but had it not turned out be that kind of visit, I realized that the love he gave me and the lessons he taught me still endure, no matter what. So in honour of my wonderful Dad, here is my little tribute to him: Thanks for insisting that we be kind, Dad. I’m still working on this one, but the importance of taking the time to cultivate kindness makes for a happier life for everyone. You always said, “You never know what (burden) someone is carrying inside them,” and you were right. Your words were few, but when you spoke, they were worth listening to. Thank you.

Thanks for urging us to appreciate it all, even-or especially-the little stuff. Even though you treated me to some pretty epic experiences-a limo ride along the lights of Las Vegas and Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash concerts among them-the trips to the mall in Calgary with my babies in tow or just sitting around and laughing and talking wherever we were, are equally etched in my heart and memory. You showed me that it’s possible to have a great life wherever you land and always, always, people come first. Thank you.

Like anyone, you made mistakes, but you learned from them and we learned from you. You showed us by example what the good life really is and you said of any mistakes you had made, the biggest one was missing time with the people you loved the most. That’s a big one, Dad. Thank you.

Even though I was utterly repelled by your taste in tunes as a know-it-all teen, thank you for giving me an enduring love of music and the poetry and life lessons that can be found in the seemingly simple lyrics of country music. Thanks for that too, Dad. And if by chance, some our future visits are quieter than the one we had this Father’s Day, maybe we can hang out and listen to some Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. You’re still here, I’m still here, and our songs are still here. So is the love and so are the lessons. sThank you, Dad.

This week Lynne and I decided to call another truce and decided we’d put off being argumentative in favour of celebrating Father’s Day last weekend.

Growing up on the farm, I remember how hard working my parents were. Dad would head out in the tractor or combine and be gone from early in the a.m. until late in the p.m. This didn’t matter one bit, however, because my sister and I got to go with him in the field.

When we were young we’d sit and play with our toys or visit with Dad. If we got tired we’d get to have a cat nap curled up on his jacket on the floor as we took turns out in the tractor/combine with him. As we got older we still sat on the buddy seat visiting with dad.

Dad always took the time to eat supper with us too. It was definite family time as he either came into the house to eat or we’d take supper out to the field with us and he’d take a quick break; I’ve discovered this isn’t the norm of farming though and not everyone will stop to enjoy this time. I’m thankful he did.

The other week when I went home for a few days, I made sure I’d have one to hang out with him particularly before my sister’s wedding. He bought a kayak this year and since I got one last year it was the perfect chance to tour “speedy creek.”

We packed some snacks and headed south to go jump on the creek. He made fun of me as he speedily passed me, laughing that I’d be looking at the back of his head the whole time. Which on the straightaways was the case, but in the tiny rapids he kept getting stuck on rocks while I manoeuvred my little kayak through waiting for him a little further down.

It took us two and a half hours to meander down the creek. We stopped for photos, got stuck in shallow spots having to scoot our way through, and enjoyed the beautiful day touring the creek. I couldn’t believe how many turtles we saw! There were so many of them. They slithered into the creek

when they heard us get near and their little heads would pop up watching us, submarine, and pop up a little further down.

It was a ton of fun and spending time with my dad is something I love doing. He’s kind-hearted and a loving dad. I definitely take pride when people back home laugh about how much I work, telling me I’m just like him.

He has an amazing work ethic and I hope mine is even half of what his is because I’ll be set for life with that.

Family comes first for dad though and I couldn’t be luckier to have him as my pa.

And it might have been Father’s Day, but notice I didn’t use the word father… that’s because: “Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad, and that’s why I call you dad, because you are so special to me. You taught me the game and you taught me how to play it right.” ~ Wade Boggs.

The game for me would be about life in general.

Now Father’s Day is about more than just dad’s though, it’s about grandfathers as well. I didn’t know my grandpa on my dad’s side, he passed away at a very young age, and my opa passed away when I was quite young. It makes me a little sad I don’t have any memories of Grandpa Jackson and that my memories of Opa are limited, but I know I love them both immensely even without meeting one and with limited memories of the other. They had to be good people because my parents turned out the way they did.

My Oma found a second love and therefore I’m lucky to have a fantastic third grandfather. He’s a fairly quiet man, or maybe that’s because I’m pretty quiet and don’t talk much, but he is knowledgeable and kind-hearted like grandpa’s are.

He’s been there for our family and he’s been there for my Oma. Seeing them together is beautiful because you can see the love in their eyes when you look at them interacting with each other and I feel blessed to have him in my life.

Moose Mountain Baseball League wraps season in Carlyle Kelly Running Observer Staff

Coming together on Sunday, June 21, the Moose Mountain Baseball League had their playoffs in Carlyle.

With teams coming to participate in Rally Cap, Mosquito, Peewee, Bantam, and Midget categories the day was filled with fun competition.

Despite sporadic rain throughout the days, games went ahead as planned.

The rain added a challenging element especially for the pitchers, whose precision in releasing the ball was hindered by a slippery baseball.

Overall teams came to compete and wrapped up their seasons at the league finals.

In the end teams competing in the final for the Rally Cap teams were Carlyle K and Oxbow 1, but in a close battle the young Oxbow team took the win. Other teams competing included Kipling, Carlyle W, two Redvers teams, Oxbow 2, Arcola, Wawota, Carievale, and White Bear.

Mosquito league champions were Carnduff who won over Kipling. Also competing in this division were Carlyle, Alameda, Arcola, Wawota, and Redvers who all put up solid battles throughout the day.

Peewee league finals saw Wawota take on Arcola in a tough battle which saw Wawota come out on top in the end. Other teams competing in the weekend included Kipling, Carlyle, two Carnduff teams, and a team from Oxbow.

For the Bantam teams competition Carlyle made it to the final playing against a tough Weyburn team. In the end Weyburn was able to earn victory, but Carlyle put up a good fight. Oxbow and Redvers also competed in this age category.

Midget teams from Carlyle, Oxbow, Kipling, and Estevan were out to compete in the Midget category. With a darkness settling in on Sunday, the game between Carlyle and Oxbow was suspended in its 11th inning to be played later in the week, which was past this issue’s deadline in the paper.

All the teams this year from the area did a great job, always improving, and were excited to wrap their league finals on Sunday. The older teams will now compete at provincial levels, including the Wawota Pats in Peewee A and the Moose Mountain Drillers in the Peewee A2 section. The South East A’s based out of Alameda will compete in Bantam A. Youth from the area have also been competing with the South East Legacy Twins Midget AAA team.

White Bear Ladies Golf Tourney STARS Air Ambulance is an important feature in rural Saskatchewan and as a non-profit relies on the efforts of fundraising. Locally the White Bear Lake Ladies Golf Tournament focuses on exactly this, raising money for an essential service.

STARS became operational 30 years ago, since then they have flown over 29,000 missions from bases in Calgary, Edmonton, Grand Prairie, Regina, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg.

“Since establishing operations in Saskatchewan in 2012, STARS’ Regina and Saskatoon missions have flown more than 2,200 missions across the province,” Bonnie Monteith said.

Of these missions many local communities have seen STARS numerous times: Alameda – 1, Arocla – 25, Carlyle – 6, Heward – 1, Kennedy – 1, Kenosee Lake – 3, Kisbey – 2, Lampman – 5, Maryfield – 2, Redvers – 2, Stoughton – 9, Wawota – 2, and White Bear Lake – 3.

“With STARS in the air, people living in rural Saskatchewan, working in remote areas, travelling on highways, or being transported from local hospitals to major medical centres receive the best critical care in an intensive care environment,” Monteith said.

The women hosting the golf tournament are dedicated in supporting STARS and are looking for sponsors for the day.

Colleen Brown, Ev Sillers, and Jacky Lothian are heading up the event and have explained that there are four levels of sponsorship: Bronze at $100, Silver at $200, Gold at $300 or more, and Platinum at $600 or more.

The sponsorship can be a monetary donation or a participant prize; but, ultimately the women are focused on raising money for STARS. Last year Lothian stated, “The tournament was a huge success due to wonderfully enthusiastic golfers and fabulously supportive businesses.

The generosity of the Bear Claw Casino, the White Bear Golf Course, and our many sponsors this year has empowered us to contribute to the lifesaving STARS Air Ambulance.”

This will be the third annual Ladies Golf Tournament for STARS held by members of the White Bear Lake Golf Course.

The three women, Lothian, Brown, and Sillers, decided to host the event to create a fun day for women in the area directed towards a good cause.

In 2013 the event was fully booked and it became

Brown told The Observer in the past, “Stars has already done great things in the area. We really need it here because we’re two hours away from a major city and a fully-equipped hospital.”

Local youth off to play ball at Devil’s Lake Kelly Running Observer Staff

Jordan Gudmundson, daughter of Dale and Tammy Gudmundson, will be attending Lake Region State College (LRSC) at Devil’s Lake, ND, next year where she will be taking psychology and playing both volleyball and softball at the school having signed her national letters of intent to play earlier this year.

Becoming an LRSC Royals athlete took a lifetime of dedication beginning with taking up baseball in grade three when Jordan’s family moved to Carlyle, followed by volleyball a couple of years later. “I think I started baseball for the first time when we moved here, I don’t really remember playing it before then,� Jordan explained. “I started volleyball in grade five, I think is when you can start here, and I struggled a lot but I really enjoyed it.�

In grade seven, Jordan said she had first heard about club volleyball and tried out. She didn’t make it that year, but worked hard on her skills so she would be able to try again with hopes of making it. “I played with the Stingers for two years, then

the Vipers for two years, and I was with Weyburn this year,� she explained of her club seasons.

She also played as a Carlyle Cougar at G.F.Kells and says that each one of her coaches helped her develop. “They all have dierent ways of doing things and because of that I was able to figure out what worked best for me,â€? Jordan said.

Throughout her years Jordan has played, mostly, as a middle in high school, left side for the Vipers, and right side for Weyburn this year.

With baseball she added, “Lequeyer’s coached one year and the Grimes boys coached us last year, but mostly I’ve been coached by Tara Bendtsen.�

Baseball has kept Jordan in Carlyle, while volleyball led her to play out of Carlyle, Arcola, and, most recently, Weyburn. “There were actually fewer girls trying out than here,� Jordan said. Though fewer girls they were of high calibre as the Weyburn Elite earned fourth place in the province. “It was kind of intimidating playing with girls you don’t really know.�

This experience though will help Jordan as she moves to North Dakota along with Weyburn teammate Hannah Hextall.

Hextall was heading down to play in at LRSC and when discussing a possible fit for the team the coach became interested, leading Brigitte Freschette (head coach of the women’s volleyball team at LRSC) to contact Jordan. “I was nervous when I got the phone call,�

Jordan explained. “She called and I was on my way there within a week, so I was excited, but thought, ‘I have no time to prepare!’�

The phone call came just before May long weekend and a decision then had to be made after Jordan visited the school. She had already been accepted into the University of Regina for Psychology, but now had to choose with a new option presenting itself. “It didn’t take long to decide,� she said. “After that phone call the decision was pretty easy, I want to do this. It’s a small school and so if I miss classes for volleyball, I’ll be able to get the work that I missed and the teachers will know who you are. It’s better than being in large classes to me.�

She will still be taking psychology and after two years at Lake Region will transfer back to a Canadian University or to Minot. “My parents have been very supportive,�

Jordan exclaimed. “My dad said, ‘If she has a chance to play she should.’ They both wanted me to because they had been talking to people who had the chance, but didn’t take it and they regretted that choice.�

Jordan will be headed down to Devil’s Lake on Aug. 5 to begin training with her team on Aug. 7. It will be a short summer for the recent high school

Their team had a very successful season which culminated in the Sask Volleyball Provincials held on May 1-3 in Saskatoon and Warman where tough battles led them to be fourth in the province overall. graduate and one that will test her work ethic as she explains the summer training program she was sent is “pretty hefty.� “I’ve had to Google some of the exercises we’re doing for the pre-season, but I’ve started it,� she said. “When I was down there the girls said the first few weeks are the worst, so I want to go into it as good as I can. They told me though that if you can make it through the pre-season you’ll be fine.� “It’s going to be tough, but that’s expected.�

Jordan will be playing as a left side and a defensive specialist at LRSC in volleyball and will be playing as a utility player in softball as she doesn’t yet have a set position.

In addition to the sports she will be playing at LRSC, Jordan has also taken part in track and field as well as badminton in Carlyle, which have helped her develop as an athlete and as an individual.

Carlyle has given the young athlete a good base to pursue her future in North Dakota.

Boogie Fest founders Larry Brady and Trevor Dalziel, both of Carlyle, say that Boogie Fest is the swimming pool's main fundraiser and has grown greatly since the first festival 14 years ago. “We wanted to do a bike rally and the pool needed support, so it grew from there,” says Brady. “Our first year, we made $1,000, our best year we made $40,000, and last year, we made $15,000. I'm very happy with this year's ride.” Dalziel added: “Most years, Boogie Fest usually has over 100 bikers and easily, an equal number of volunteers.

We'd like to thank them all, as well as everyone who comes out and supports Boogie Fest.

By doing that, they are also supporting the pool.”

Boogie Fest is the main fundraiser for Crescent Point Leisure Complex in Carlyle. Although riders come to cruise the the day-long ride, the pool board stresses that Boogie Fest has something for everyone to enjoy. “You don’t need to be a biker to enjoy Boogie Fest,” says organizer Trevor Dalziel. “But if you like, you can dress like a biker,” as Dalziel’s grandson, 18-month old Jack Grimes (pictured with his grandpa) did. The 2015 edition of Boogie Fest kicked off with a free lunch and ticket blitz at Carlyle Home Hardware, as attendees took advantage of the last chance to enter the draw for this year’s prize-a 2004 Harley Davidson Heritage Soft Tail. Boogie Fest board member Trevor Dalziel found the motorcycle and said, “This year we were able to get a really great bike. It’s a 2004 Heritage Soft Tail with only 287 km on it. It’s like brand new.”

Riders are a sturdy unit

By Rod Pedersen The 2015 CFL season is about to kickoff and all nine teams are lined up at the starter’s gate with identical 0-0 records. Savour this moment because everyone’s tied for first-place and optimism reigns supreme.

It may be a stretch to say excitement is at an alltime high across the CFL but it’s certainly right up there in the Wheat Province. Keep in mind too, this could be an historic season because if the CFL owners and governors have their way, this may be the final season which kicks off around Canada Day. They’d like to move it up by as much as a month beginning as early as next year.

Here in Saskatchewan, there is no need to cross our fingers and pray for the best like so many years ago. (Although that never hurts). This year’s Roughriders are a sturdy unit which appears to be in contention to play in the 2015 Grey Cup in the new Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.

After an 0-2 preseason, I’m still scratching my head at what exactly the Riders have assembled here. But that’s fine. The 2013 Grey Cup championship team seems like eons ago but there are still some traces of it left behind in the form of Darian Durant, Weston Dressler, Chris Getzlaf, John Chick, Alex Hall, Tyron Brackenridge and the like.

There’s a perilously thin line between “old” and “veteran” and we found this out during the fated 5-13 season of 2011. However Father Time has not yet caught up to this group. Of that I am confident, but he does have a tendency to show up unannounced.

To counter that, there’s a virtual flood of rookies on this year’s team including the next wave of franchise stars like 2015 draftees Nic Demski (receiver/returner) and Rory Connop (defensive tackle). I counted nine brand new faces who avoided the two swings of the axe at countdown time.

“I think it’s a very good mix,” announced Riders head coach Corey Chamblin at the conclusion of the preseason. “The one thing I’ll tell you about these young guys is a lot of them have been through a lot in their personal lives. I think they’ll use that in their professional lives. They’re tough and they’re ready to go.”

One thing that popped out in the preseason was the sparkling play of back-up quarterback Kevin Glenn. He effortlessly moved the ball with an 83% completion rate and casually threw a pair of touchdowns. The team’s in good stead in the event Darian Durant goes down. (You can cross your fingers again).

“Kevin’s crisp in all that he does,” Chamblin

continued. “And he’s here for two reasons: either for his performance or his presence. Darian is clean also. It just makes us stronger and that’s what we need. As a matter-of-fact we have the two winningest quarterbacks of the past five years.”

Oh to have been able to say that last year.

Although I seem to be the only one bringing that up around here anymore.

So now the football club is ready to set sail on a brand new season and it begins with a visit from the rival Winnipeg Blue Bombers this Saturday at 6:00 pm at Mosaic Stadium (TSN, CKRM Rider Radio Network).

While the Riders feel pretty buoyant of their chances after a decent showing the preseason, the Blue Bombers are already fretting after a 26-15 home loss to Hamilton in their exhibition finale.

“Pre-season or not, I hate losing,” spewed Bomber centre Dominic Picard to a Winnipeg reporter. “I hate this feeling. It makes me sick.”

Boy that started earlier than normal!

But I’ve seen teams snap out of a funk like that in just a matter of days and by the time the Bombers come to town later this week, they’ll be ready to ruin the Riders’ party in their homeopener.

Saskatchewan intends to be ungracious hosts.

Hope abounds throughout the CFL

Sports Wrap-up with Bruce Penton There are high hopes in nine Canadian cities as the new Canadian Football League season gets underway, but in eight of those cities, hopes will be dashed before the Grey Cup is presented at Investors Field in Winnipeg in late November.

Highest hopes are in Calgary, where the Stampeders are out to

defend their Cup title.

With Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback, Jon Cornish the best at his position in the backfield and the astute leadership of coach John Hufnagel, the Stamps are heavy favourites to repeat.

There’s always hope in Saskatchewan, where the Riders walk on water in the eyes of their fans. The big hope is that their two aging quarterbacks, Darian Durant (33) and Kevin Glenn (36), can survive the season injury-free.

Hope is all the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have going for them after another bad season in 2014 (7-11 following a 5-1 start). GM Kyle Walters and coach Mike O’Shea will have great

seats for the Grey Cup game being played Nov. 29 in Winnipeg, but it’s unlikely they’ll be watching their team. One positive in Winnipeg: QB Drew Willy signed a longterm contract to finally gives the Bombers some stability at the game’s most important position.

In B.C., the hope is that the Lions can rebound from a mediocre 9-9 season under the guidance of rookie coach Jeff Tedford. If quarterback Travis Lulay’s throwing shoulder is strong enough for him to play a full season, the Lions could contend. Lulay has played only 12 games over the last two seasons and elected not to undergo off-season shoulder surgery.

In Edmonton, there’s really only one hope — it’s the same one every year. Beat Calgary. Winning the Grey Cup would be great, but as long as the Eskimos finish ahead of Calgary, the season

is semi-successful.

Down East, the Alouettes had hoped to have Michael Sam in their lineup, but the first openly gay professional football player vamoosed after only four or five days in camp.

Hamilton’s hope is that it plays better away from their new Tim Hortons Field. On the road, the TiCats were 2-7 while their 7-2 home mark was tied for the CFL’s best.

Toronto can only hope that quarterback Ricky Ray’s stint on the injury list is only six games. With him, they’re one of the best teams in the league; without him, they’re suspect.

And Ottawa Redblacks’ second season in the league brings hope that there will be improvement on 2014’s 2-16 record.

Doubling their win total still won’t give them a playoff berth, but Henry Burris calling signals gives them a winning opportunity every time out.

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle detachment of the RCMP received 64 calls to service between Friday, June 12, and Thursday, June 18.

911 calls There were three 911 calls during this time. Two involved someone who was playing with the phone, one in the Carlyle area and one in Carlyle. The third call was a misdial.

Assault Four assaults occurred during this time.

The first was in the Carlyle area where a couple of neighbours became involved in a fight after a few drinks. The complainant declined to pursue charges.

A wedding brawl got out of hand at Kenosee Lake, but it was a consensual fight between the parties involved and there were no charges laid.

One assault is currently under investigation which occurred in Carlyle.

Two males, aged 32 and 29, were charged with assault, break and enter, and robbery, as well as for being masked while committing these offences.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP provided assistance to Regina Police Services in executing a warrant for failing to appear to a 46-year-old male.

A hit and run was reported to Carlyle RCMP. The offence took place at Kenosee Lake and if anyone has any information they are encouraged to contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Fraud was reported to RCMP and passed on to Phonebusters, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Agency.

A lost wallet was reported.

Break and enter The Back Nine, Redvers golf club, reported a break and enter. RCMP ask for anyone information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

Criminal harassment Four criminal harassment reports were all determined to be unfounded as they were not criminal in nature.

Failure to attend court Two individuals, an 18-year-old male and a 25-year-old female were each charged with failing to attend court.

Breach of conditions A complaint of a 26-year-old male was reported to RCMP for breach of conditions, but the complainant declined to lay charges.

False alarms There were a total of eight false alarms during this time to communities including Carlyle, Redvers, Wawota, Manor, and White Bear.

Fire A fire call was reported at the White Bear Resort where a boat had caught fire. Assistance was provided to the individual who only received minor injuries.

Alcohol related offences Three different drivers were reported for being impaired while operating a motor vehicle. One call came from Manor, while the other two originated in the Carlyle area. Patrols were made, but the vehicles were not located.

Under the liquor act RCMP responded to a male who was passed out in Carlyle. The individual was located and arrested, then taken to the hospital to be looked after.

Mischief Five reports of mischief originated during this time.

The first involved an intoxicated subject who was threatening to kick in a door. Patrols were made, but the individual was not located and the person who called the police denied making the phone call.

In Wawota a vehicle was reportedly keyed, but after it was washed the complainant realized it wasn’t damaged.

There was a complaint of an intoxicated male in Manor. The individual was located and given a ride home.

In the Carlyle area a subject was reported for breaking the windows of a vehicle in someone’s driveway.

The complainant didn’t want to pursue charges.

An individual in the Carlyle area was intoxicated and breaking things at home. The complainant declined to pursue charges.

Traffic violations A 31-year-old male was fined $230 for failing to stop at a stop sign.

NEWS speed violations which occurred near Redvers, Carlyle, Kenosee Lake, and Arcola.

Someone reported an individual for texting while driving. The driver was spoken to.

A complaint was made of a vehicle spraying another with gravel. RCMP were unable to locate the suspect vehicle.

A 21-year-old male was ticketed $280 for using electronics while driving.

There was an inspection ticket issued to a 40-year-old male to remove the front tint from his vehicle and to add mudflaps.

In the Carlyle area a 30-year-old female was charged for not having a qualified driver with her while operating a vehicle on a learner’s licence. She was also ticketed for speeding.

A traffic collision took place in the Carlyle area and is still under investigation.

Municipal bylaws There was a noisy party reported in Arcola where a 26-year-old male was fined $50.

In Moose Mountain Provincial Park a noise complaint was reported, but the complainant refused to lay charges.

The party was shut down.

Theft Equipment, a bobcat, was taken from Arcola. If anyone has any information involving this incident contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Theft of a Nintendo DS in the Carlyle area resulted in the individual being talked to and the safe return of the device. The complainant declined to pursue charges.

A 2010 Massey Ferguson tractor was stolen. If anyone has any information, contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Road repairs At its Wednesday, June 17 meeting, Carlyle Town Council decided to slightly delay planned road repairs to areas which have sustained frost boil damage, in an effort to let excess moisture under the existing pavement dry out.

All-terrain vehicles Council is considering an amendment to bylaws regarding the use of allterrain vehicles and golf carts within town limits, as some operators are not respecting current town bylaws.

Construction Members of council moved to amend current bylaws regarding all new construction. All new construction now must be approved and overseen by a building inspector, with the property owner responsible for all fees incurred.

Saskatchewan Public Alert System Carrie Pelletier and Brent Stillwell have been added to the list of authorized users for the Saskatchewan Public Alert System.

Main Street Alderman John Brownlee said he had received much positive feedback regarding Carlyle’s Main Street beautification project.

Jenn Sedor, speaking as both a councillor and on behalf of Carlyle’s Green and Clean commitee, said that a post on Facebook regarding recent vandalism on Main Street had received over 1,000 shares; adding that citizens were genuinely outraged at the deliberate damage done to the rest area between the Civic Centre and the Capstone restaurant.

Mini horse visits Moose Mountain Lodge Lynne Bell

The residents of Carlyle’s Moose Mountain Lodge were treated to an appearance by a tiny equine visitor on Friday, June 19, as Angel, a miniature horse from Grenfell’s Discovery Farms paid a visit to the facility.

Moose Mountain Lodge staffer Jenny Martel arranged Angel’s visit and said, “I thought it would be a treat for our residents and they really seemed to get a kick out of Angel. Many of them are unable to get outside and many of them also come from farming backgrounds, so I thought this would be something they might really enjoy.”

“I’m very happy it went over so well with so many of our residents.”

Moose Mountain Trail Riders celebrate 28th annual ride 15064SSS07

gathering. As darkness settled in and the stars shone, the campers were welcomed by a serenade from the local coyotes. What a great way to start the Moose Mountain Trail Riders 28th annual ride!

Friday dawned clear and warm as more riders came into camp. The coffee was on, muffins and donuts were served, past acquaintances were greeted and newcomers helped to find camping spots. The group was well-fed throughout the weekend by Shelley and David Slykhuis.

Over the weekend, led by trail boss Doug Ilchuck, young and old took to the trails on the southern slopes of the Moose Mountains.

The trails took

them through open pastures, bushy coulees and up steep hills where they were treated to some spectacular views of the surrounding prairies. With warm temperatures and brisk breezes to control the flies and mosquitoes, the conditions were ideal for the ride.

The only blemish on a perfect weekend occurred when a shortlived but violent hail storm struck at dusk on Friday. Although no animals or people were hurt, significant damage was done to trucks, trailers and campers.

With everyone working together, the camp was soon restored to order.

Although spirits were dampened that night, with the dawn

of a glorious morning, everyone was ready and willing to hit the trails again. With the presentation of numerous door prizes provided by local businesses to be won, a silent auction to enjoy, tall tales aplenty around the campfire causing laughter to echo around the campsite, it would appear everyone’s spirits were revived and everyone enjoyed the rest of the weekend.

After a final meal on Sunday, the campers were packed, horses loaded, farewells exchanged and a weary but happy group of riders headed home.

The big tent was taken down, the camp area cleaned and Saskairie was once again returned to the coyotes.

Welcome back to Wawota, Bertha Drumm. Bertha is living in the Senior’s Apartments. Beryl Richards has also moved into these apartments.

Sympathy to the Brian and Darci Mills and all of the other family members of the late Lorraine Mills who passed away. She passed away on Saturday,June 13th in Edmonton AB. She was 82 years old. Her funeral service was held at St Andrew’s Church in Maryfield on June 19th.

Jake Lamoureaux travelled to Valentine, Nebraska last week where he attended the funeral of his grandmother, Mary Mulligan.

The United Church of Canada celebrated its 90th anniversary on June 10th.The United Church came into being with the amalgamation of the Methodist Church, the Congregational Church and the Presbyterian Church.

The Methodist Church was started with immigrants from England who landed in Nova Scotia, the Congregationalists came from England with the promise of free land to New Englanders who would resettle in Newfoundland and the Presbyterians who were French Huguenots who were fleeing persecution from France joined in 1925 to form the United Church of Canada. It now includes over 2 million people and has a rich history with the development of Canada itself. In some centres bells were rung 90 times in honour of this milestone.

The Chris Henderson Band took the stage at Arcola’s historic Mac Theatre for the Arcola Optimist Club’s spring concert Friday, June 19. An enthusiastic Henderson said his country music colleagues Blake Berglund and Codie Prevost had praise for the hall’s heritage charm and excellent acoustics, adding: “What a beautiful venue and fantastic community spirit displayed in that theatre. We need 1,000 more of these in Canada.”

Brenda Lemieux is proud to welcome a new grandchild, her first grandson, Eli Matthew on June 14, 2015. Eli is the son of Matthew and Brianne Lemieux (Strothoaks). Congratulations to everyone.

Brenda McGillis (Ponoka, AB) stopped by on the afternoon of Monday, June 15 to have a nice visit with Jeanne Lemieux. She informed Jeanne that her mother, Laura Poulsen had had the misfortune of breaking her hip a while back and is doing fairly well now and is residing in a nursing home near the family in Ponoka. Brenda also spent time visiting with her brother, Paul and Marina Poulsen for a few days and attended the funeral of her mother-in-law, Mrs. McGillis at Bellegarde on Tuesday, June 16.

Gray and Edel Cowan attended a ceremony on Tuesday, June 16 for their son Murray Cowan at Estevan City Hall where his new position as Inspector was made official and he received his new badge from the Chief. Also at this time a new constable was sworn in to serve on the Estevan Police Service.

Come Friday, June 19 evening saw many local families heading out towards Moose Mountain Regional Park with their campers to spend the weekend camping and probably fishing as well.

Enjoy your Father’s Day weekend dads doing what you like best and have fun with the family. A lot of these campers will now be staying out there at the dam for the summer months so the families can enjoy the summer holidays – play and stay safe everyone.

Glennis Petersn spent June 19 – 26 visiting in Lang, SK with her daughter Donna, Lyle McDonald and family. On June 20 Glennis was accompanied

by Donna and granddaughter Courtney George and her infant son Jaxsen to Lanigan, SK to attend a bridal shower for Vanessa Paulsen, bride-elect of David McDonald, and on Sunday they returned to Lang. While in Lang Glennis’s brother, Les and Gail Patchett stopped overnight to visit, they were enroute home to Nutimik Lake, MB. Glennis stopped in Weyburn to visit with Yvonne Dzuba while enroute home to Alida.

Visitors with Jeanne Lemieux for a while on Sunday, June 21 were her granddaughter, Shalaine Lemieux and her friend Evan dropped by to visit

before heading back to Meadow Lake. Natalie Lenek and her daughter Amery (Estevan) also dropped in for a quick visit.

This is the final year that the Mr. and Mrs. Frands Jensen Memorial Award will be presented to a student who has attended Alida School and who has achieved a high academic standing in grade ten. A note of interest is that this year the grade ten students were the last kindergarten class who had attended Alida School before its closure in June 2005. The results ended in a three-way tie among the students who achieved an average of 90. % in the six grade ten compulsory subjects (English 10A, English 10B, Foundation Math 10, Workplace Math 10, Science 10 and History 10). The students – Julie Potapinski and Liam Boutin (Redvers School) and Sara McClung (Carnduff Education Complex) have been notified of their achievement and will be presented with the award at a later date here in Alida as the plaque will now remain on display in the Alida School Awards Cabinet at the Recreation Centre.

Congratulations students on a job well done.

It is Graduation time – this year Alida has a number of Grade 12 graduates. These graduates are – John Boutin (Redvers High School), Cassandra (Cassey) Germain (Oxbow Prairie Horizon School), Megan Swallow (OPH) and Hayden Junk (Luther College, Regina). Congratulations everyone – Good Luck and Best wishes on your future endeavors.

Hope that all Dads had a great Father’s Day on Sunday, June 21 and that you were treated to something special on your special day. A Brunch was held at Marcy’s Diner here in Alida from 9:00-1:00 serving breakfast and/or a beef dinner. It was a very delicious, as always with a great assortment of food.

There were approximately 40 in attendance.

There were a few storms in the area this past week, but once again Alida, you could say, lucked out with just a trace of rain (but my garden still needs a much better rain than that). Today, June 21 is the longest day and also it is now officially summer – hip hip hooray. We are just about done with another month and will be welcoming July which definitely is a sure sign of summer – enjoy and have a great one.

Last week I made a mistake, “The three people that were at the campsite should have read “Kennedy” and not “Kenosee”, sorry Floyd, Geraldine and Beryl and we will see you in Kennedy at rodeo time.

Talking about Kennedy, we are a very quiet town since the store has closed, what a difference it can make to a small place---lots of residents and I am sure everyone is feeling changes made. The coffee shop is still open at the store which makes a good place for people to visit.

The Kennedy Friendship Center held their last meeting for the season on Wednesday beginning with cards followed by a potluck supper which is always great, meeting, and more cards, about 20 members come for the fellowship of supper.

The Sunday pancake breakfast will be hosted by the club at rodeo time, a good time to renew acquaintances.

Congratulations to all the grade twelve students from Kennedy and Langbank who are now part of the Kipling school (another broken link for Kennedy). I understand the exercises were very well attended and the suppers which followed were great for family and friends. Students, may your journey into the future be challenging and rewarding in whatever you choose to do.

Langbank UCW hosted the fifth annual Lilac Tea at the United Church in Langbank on Saturday, June 13. About 30 friends enjoyed an afternoon of visiting, sampling fresh fruit and tarts, and smelling the lilacs. All proceeds from the tea, more than $550, will be sent to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation - Grandmothers for Grandmothers in Africa.

The weekend of June 6th Allen and Violet Daku spent Friday to Monday in Saskatoon visiting Murray and Valerie Daku and family, also Jamie, Teak and Hillary Boyko.

Visitors with Violet Daku this weekend were Edward and Louise Daku of Okotokos, Joe and Rose Chiconine of Redvers.

A member of the Kennedy School staff had a special birthday party on Saturday afternoon.

Margaret Husband had a number of family and friends join her for a come and go out door tea party, the weather co-operated very well, everyone had special time and probably the highlight of the day was Margaret’s mother from Edmonton was able to celebrate with her. Belated greetings from friends at Kennedy.

The Saturday evening ended with sadness for the Husband families when their mother Doris passed away after a few months of illness, sympathy to all members from the Kennedy district.

Does God have favourites?

1960’s Tommy Smothers complained to his brother Dick that their mom always liked Dickie best. The comedy continues: Tommy: You had a dog.

Dickie: You had your pet chicken…

Tommy: They don’t bark good.

Dickie: You had a wagon.

Tommy: One wheel…

Tommy: We played together…once every three or four months…

Dick: You should have kept that chicken away from my dog.

Tommy: My chicken killed his dog.

In a homily “Unequal Parts” Father Brendan McGuire reflects on his mother’s funeral and the love his parents had for their twelve children. He describes the wonderful funeral procession leaving the church: “I was the first one, the youngest…my brother, the eldest, and my two sisters would be at the back of the casket; then my eight other brothers four on either side would carry Mom on their shoulders and that is how we left the church.

It was a very powerful moment as [we] walked her out of the church bound together in love. “…That night, we celebrated and it was a great day. In contrast to that, the next day, the Will was read.”

Their mom had divided the estate into unequal parts. The unity quickly disappeared as the siblings tried to puzzle it out. The question came up: “Who did she love the most?”

“Well-I’m the youngest - and I’m a priest! C’mon! Isn’t it obvious?”

“In the end, the conversation came to a grinding halt when one of my elder brothers remembered what our parents…responded…when they were asked, ‘Which of your children do you love the most?’ And he recalled, and I remember it myself as well; they said, ‘Whichever one needs it.’”

Brendan recalls that his mom didn’t love anyone less; she loved everyone equally, but she loved those who needed it a little more.

God loves us all equally, but God has more love for those who need it; those who are hurting; those who have pain and have struggled; those who have suffered loss of a loved one. He gives us the love we need at those painful moments.

Sister Pat McCormack, in a retreat said, “There is nothing I can do that can make God love me anymore than he already does and there is nothing I can do to make God love me any less than he already does.

“God loves us all because he created us. Without condition, he loves us completely. If there is going to be a little extra dose of love, God gives it to those who are on the periphery, as our Pope Francis says. Those ones who are hurting; those who are disenfranchised; the poor; the homeless; the weak; the broken; the sick. Yes these God loves just a little bit more because they need it.

So we are called to mirror that in our own lives.”

McGuire tells us we are called “to love everyone but to love those who need it the most a little bit more.” He continues, “often times those people in our lives who are hurting push us away and they do not allow us to love them.”

But “we have to continue to love them even at a distance. And communicate as best we can that we continue to love them and nothing has changed.” And McGuire challenges us: “Who today in our lives needs love the most? And can we love them as Jesus commanded?”

What makes love possible is that God loved us even before we loved him (1 John 4:10).

I sing . . . simply because ByLinda Wegner Some time ago a friend sent me a lovely card. Sketched in pencil there’s an image of a bird perched securely on a twig, beak open and lifted to the skies.

A Chinese proverb reads: ‘A bird does not sing because it has an answer but because it has a song.’ I’ve attached it to the ledge on the shelf above my keyboard.

The power of a song, be it that of a robin, sparrow, loon or one of the ten thousand bird species in the world, is impossible to express in mere words. Then, there is the unsurpassed loveliness of a hurting piece of humanity who refuses to stop singing no matter the ferocity of his or her circumstances.

The truth of that statement was stamped on my heart this week while attending a symphonic concert of music marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Holland from the Nazis. Just imagine this: Rudolf Karel wrote Nonet in 1945 while imprisoned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp;

Olivier Messiaen wrote his Quatuor pur la Fin du Temps in 1941 while imprisoned in a German prisoner-of-war camp. (Not only that, three other imprisoned musicians played his music in the night, after spending the day in hellish conditions.)

These men were just two of the many who refused to quit making music even though they faced a certain death.

Cancer and the agricultural community

By Calvin Daniels A recent report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, (IARC), an arm of the World Health Organization, has sent a veritable shockwave through the agricultural community, and has consumers again questioning possible food safety.

The IARC report classified glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup, as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;probableâ&#x20AC;? cause of cancer.

What makes that so concerning is that it is widely held that glyphosate is the most heavily used herbicide in the world today.

Glyphosate is so widely used because it has several application options on the farm.

To begin with the herbicide has been a key tool in chemfallow, which has been a major component of zero-till farming operations.

Zero-till has been a key to reducing the loss of valuable topsoil through wind and water erosion.

The herbicide also plays a role in some pre-harvest applications to expedite getting a crop in the bin.

And finally glyphosate is often used in conjunction with crops like corn and soybeans that the original parent company Monsanto has genetically modified to resist it. This allows farmers to kill weeds but not their crops.

So anything that suggests the chemical is dangerous is worrisome from the farm perspective as farm chemicals such as DDT have been banned in the past. If the IARC report was the first step to that eventuality it would fundamentally change the way farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farm today.

That said tie the word cancer to anything today and consumers are going to get antsy, and

rightfully so. Cancer remains a disease which takes on many forms and while science has helped with earlier detection, and better treatments, far too many still die.

The question comes down to how serious a threat glyphosate is in terms of being a possible cause of cancer.

In a piece by Michael Specter at www.newyorker.com the risk would seem undefined.

In the story he wrote â&#x20AC;&#x153;To understand what this report actually means, we need to look at its context. As the University of Michiganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Andrew Maynard puts it in this excellent explanatory video, the I.A.R.C. classification â&#x20AC;&#x153;doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t indicate how likelyâ&#x20AC;? glyphosate is to cause cancer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is the equivalent of saying a rock could kill you but

not pointing out that it probably needs to be dropped on your head from a great height first.â&#x20AC;?

In a recent AgAdvance magazine article Dr. John McLaughlin, Chief Science OďŹ&#x192;cer of Public Health Ontario, one of Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top epidemiologists and a leader of the largest cross-Canada study on pesticides and health, was sought out for his views on the report. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Risk and hazard assessments go hand-inhand,â&#x20AC;? says McLaughlin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The purpose of hazard assessment is to know that something has the potential to cause cancer,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is important to know. The hazard assessment done

by IARC is complementary to risk assessment done by national regulatory agencies, with one diďŹ&#x20AC;erence being that

risk assessment identifies levels and practices that can be safely used, with most evidence being based on short term studies, whereas cancer can usually take many years to arise so any hazard that might be detected would be based on exposures up to 20 ago.â&#x20AC;? Ultimately, he says the value is the ability to use the information to balance the risks and benefits of a certain product, whether thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s glyphosate or sunlight or a chemotheraphy drug that is also classified as Group 2A because it can stymie certain cancer cells in the short term, while increasing the longerterm development of others,â&#x20AC;? detailed the story. â&#x20AC;&#x153;None of that suggests we should ignore this study,â&#x20AC;? wrote Specter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yet we also have to

be aware of blindly invoking the â&#x20AC;&#x153;precautionary principle,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; as many activists argue that we should. In theory, the principle is hard to condemn: it essentially says that we ought not to develop and use a technology unless it is considered safe. Safety is a slippery concept, though. Many people ski voluntarilyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;an activity with its own dangers.

Although hundreds of people drown in their in their own bathtubs, we still take baths. A strict interpretation of the precautionary principle would require us to stop driving because thousands of Americans die each year on the highways. More than that, the principle would have prevented the development of antibiotics, vaccines, X-rays, elevators, airplanes, and many other signature ele-

ments of modern life.â&#x20AC;?

And therein lies the core problem with the IARC report. While far from a scientist I suspect most chemicals with suďŹ&#x192;cient exposure has the potential to cause cancer, glyphosate among them. Still four decades of study has not shown direct correlations, and that hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t changed with the IARC report. What is does suggest is diligence is still required in terms of the long term eďŹ&#x20AC;ects of the herbicide, and frankly probably thousands of other substances we use from hair spray, to hand sanitizer to mouthwash.

But the report is not something to panic over, nor should we overreact with calls for banning gylphosate. Instead we need caution in its use, and more study into what long term use might lead too.

KLBC 2015 Cup a great success Kenosee Lake Bible Camp’s 13 annual Fundraising Golf Tournament was a great success. The weather co-operated (except for a 5 minute thunder burst), the turnout of participants was our highest ever at 50 golfers, the course was stellar, and the supper was delicious. With corporate and individual sponsors, we raised $8355.00 towards the Chapel/multi-purpose building fund. This money will go a long ways towards pouring the cement landing at the front of the building -making it accessible for use this camp year!

Alida Rink Project

Submitted In the past few years there was talk that the waiting room area of the rink was beginning to need some renovations and some monies had been received for this purpose.

Then came the summer flood of 2014 and after the assessment of the damage it was evident that something had to be done so things were put into gear. The Alida Rec Board held a public meeting to hear what the community thought. A Rink Committee was formed with six members who would be in charge of demolishing, cleaning up and building the new front of the rink while the Rec Board members would be in charge of the fund raising.

The cost of this project was estimated at $520,000.00 which would feature a ground level 60’ x 130’ addition attached to the north end of the rink, two dressing rooms, a new kitchen and a spacious viewing area.

The Rec Board has been busy with fundraising and approximating $160,000.00 has been raised through these events and donation (but excludes the flood insurance).

Early this spring the members and volunteers began to gather the salvageable items and putting them into storage until after the renovations are completed. Now in June the demolition on the front of the rink began, the debris will soon be cleaned up and hauled away to be ready for the next step of the rebuilding.

Sandy Maxwell

Dorothy May Hawman (Bye)

Doris Sandra Maxwell (MacDonald) passed away December 29th 2014 at 10:30 pm in St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon. Sandy fought a valiant Àght with cancer but lost the battle quietly with friends and family around her.

Born February 18th, 1949 to Dot and Ken MacDonald of Carlyle Sk. Sandra is survived by her husband Glenn, son Jayson and siblings, Donna (Lorne), Dennis (Connie), and Donald (Kathy).

Sandra, as her family called her, grew up in Carlyle attended school and generally made lasting friends with whoever crossed her path. She attended university in Regina taking training to be a teacher. The kids of the world were lucky to have such a caring intelligent person guiding them. She Àrst taught in Uranium City where she met and married Glenn Maxwell. We were blessed with our son Jayson.

Her sister Donna and brothers Dennis and Donald were so dear to Sandra. Lorne, Connie, Kathy, Noreen and Judy became part of the MacDonald family so were loved by this marvelous person Sandy. Many nieces, nephews and cousins on Glenn’s side and the Macdonald side knew Sandy as someone to rely on for a birthday hello or just “how are you”?

Somewhere in our travels we meet someone who makes a difference in our lives, I was so fortunate to marry one. The heartbreak of losing her is only tempered by the memory of the laugher, crying and hugs she brought. She often quoted her dad that told her,” we are built to close to the river”, so crying came easy. She loved Wilbur, Ra, Tinkerbelle and pretty much any animal she met, even a lamb she loved named Samson. This woman was so special and the big family gathering up yonder will have a few more laughs and hugs because she will be there.

Good-bye my love and make a place for us all.

In lieu of Áowers, donations may be made in Sandy’s name to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, the SPCA or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Interment will be at the Dalesboro Cemetary at 1:00 pm on Saturday July 4, 2015. A time of friendship and sharing will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Carlyle Memorial Hall. All family and friends are welcome to attend one or both of these gatherings to honor Sandra. Casual dress for the day is recommended.

Dorothy May Hawman (Bye) was born in Arcola, SK on April 30, 1936. She was the fourth child of Earl and Margret Tuffnell.

Dorothy attended school in Fineview, Arcola and ¿nished her schooling at Gibson’s Landing in B.C. In 1957, she married Ron Bye, they have four children: Randy, Ron (Rosemarie), Laurie and David. Ron passed away in 1991.

In 1996, she married Jim Hawman and his four boys. Dorothy was a kind loving person to all eight of her (kids) and to any other cause she thought would help the community.

Funeral services were held at the United Church with burial at the Arcola Cemetery.

Bernice Cann 1935-2015

Bernice Lavina Cann (née Lequyere) passed away suddenly at her home in Estevan, SK on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at the age of 79 years.

Bernice is survived by her brothers, Roy (Marlene) Lequyer of Carlyle, SK and Robert (Betty) Lequyere of Weyburn, SK, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Cecil and Rilla Lequyere and sister Yvonne (Mike) Zaryski.

A graveside service was held on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Percy Cemetery, Kisbey, SK. If friends so desire, donations in Bernice’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Estevan.

The most effective RESP withdrawal strategies It seems like a long time ago that you began to regularly contribute to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your child or grandchild and, suddenly, it’s time! In a month or two, that ‘child’ will be heading off to university or college and the accumulated cash in their RESP will begin to pay off. You’re far from alone: Canadian families have amassed over $44 billion in savings to help pay for their children’s post secondary education and 379,120 students had RESP withdrawals for a total of $3.04 million in 2014.* You’ll want to get the most from your RESP – and with the right withdrawal strategies you will save on the taxes your student will pay and get the full benefits of the Educational Assistance Payments (EAPs) that consist of the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), the Canada Learning Bond (CLB) and the income earned on the money you saved in the RESP**. Here’s how: Withdraw income before withdrawing contributions. As the subscriber to your student’s plan, you can elect to withdraw the income as an EAP in the hands of your student – and that’s the tax-wise choice because your student’s income is likely to be very low.

Avoid withdrawing contributions be-

fore your student begins school. Otherwise, you will trigger a repayment of the CESG. Spread out the EAPs over the expected length of the educational program instead of taking an all-at-once lump sum. This avoids burdening your student with a large taxable income in the first year and takes advantage of his or her (presumably) lower marginal tax rates over a number of years.

Make the right withdrawals to avoid clawbacks. You may be required to refund some of the CESG money if there is any remaining in your RESP plan after your student completes (or leaves) their post-secondary program.

To avoid a potential CESG clawback, withdraw EAPs before contributions.

Be sure you’ll have the money when you need it. Before releasing an EAP, your RESP carrier will require proof of enrolment – so get that documentation to your carrier as early as possible.

Use any leftovers. If there are still contributions remaining in the plan after your student finishes college or university, you can use that money as you wish. Transfer it to another child’s plan or withdraw it for your personal use.
