Bringing home the medals: local athletes find success at SHSAA Provincial Track and Field Kelly Running Observer Staff

It was an extremely successful showing for the South East within the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) Provincial Track and Field meet in Regina on June 3 and 4. The district earned a ranking of 8th this year and earned the award of Most Improved. This title comes with the efforts of numerous youth from the area.

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed!

Arcola Athletes Shania Taylor, a Senior girl in grade 12, earned a gold medal in shot put (11.24m) and also finished 10th in javelin (28.73m).

After a late ride home following competition athletes were exhausted, yet excited as they received a police escort to the school where a group of supportive family and friends were awaiting to congratulate the team. They found a lot of individual success at Provincials, but together accomplished a second place finish within the 2A classification of schools Combined Team Scores with 146 points. Missing from photo Sam M. Abigail Birch finished seventh in the 80m hurdles (13.32s) as a Midget girl and contributed to the South East Midget girls 4*100m relay’s fourth place finish (54.04s).

She was joined on the relay team by Melissa Ellis who also placed sixth in Midget girls’ javelin (26.47m).

G.F.K. Athletes Gordon F. Kells students found a very successful provincial track competition with Karli Colpitts earning two gold medals, Taylor Sargent earning a silver and a bronze, Jorja Bendtsen earning a bronze, and the entire Carlyle team earning their school the 2A classification of schools Combined Team Scores with 146 points. Points for this are earned for placing in the top 16 in an event, which all of the G.F.K. athletes achieved.

Colpitts competed as a Junior girl, going home with a gold medal in discus (33.65m) and a gold medal in shot put (10.39m), as well as an 11th place finish in javelin (27.28m).

Sargent earned a silver medal in 80m hurdles (12.35s) as a Junior girl and contributed to a bronze medal in the 4*100m relay (52.67s). The relay also included fellow Carlyle athlete Jorja Bendtsen along with Bronwyn Douglas of Carnduff and Morgan

Fichter of Estevan.

In addition to Bendtsen helping earn the bronze in the 4*100m she placed 6th overall in junior girls hurdles (13.19s).

Gracie Schutz had a great showing in the Midget girls category. She earned 11th in the 200m dash (28.05s), seventh in the 400m dash (1:03.57s), ninth in the 100m dash (13.46s), and contributed to fourth place finishes for both the 4*100m relay (54.04s) and the 4*400m relay (4:20.60s).

Tucker Sharp in the Midget boys 3,000m run (11:21.21s) finished 16th.

Halen Duhaime finished fourth in shot put (11.85m) and 11th in discus (29.04m) as a Junior boy.

Sam Matthewson earned 13th in Junior boys discus (29.04m).

Kyle Sargent finished 10th in the 200m dash (24.21s) and eighth in the 400m dash (54.24s) in the Senior boys category.

Alex Messer finished 15th in triple jump (11.25m).

Whole Corn on the Grill How to choose corn: Look for tight, squeaky, green husks and rows of kernels that feel taut and full when you run your hands over the cobs.

Ingredients (servings 4)

4 ears of corn, in husk

Preparation Prepare a grill for medium heat. Grill corn, rotating occasionally, until husks are blackened (some will flake and fall off) and kernels are tender with some browned and charred spots, 25–35 minutes.

Let corn cool slightly, then shuck.

Serve with Charred Spring Onion and Sesame-Chile Butter

Charred Onion & Sesame-Chile Butter Ingredients SERVINGS: MAKES ABOUT 2 CUPS 6 spring onions 1 tablespoon vegetable oil Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons shichimi togarashi or 1 crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature

Preparation Prepare a grill for medium-high heat. Toss onions with oil on a rimmed baking sheet; season with salt and black pepper.

Grill until lightly charred and wilted, about 3 minutes (extra-large bulbs will take a little longer). Let cool; finely chop.

Mix onions, shichimi togarashi, and red pepper flakes into butter in a small bowl; season with salt and black pepper.

Do Ahead: Butter can be made 1 week ahead. Cover and chill. Bring to room temperature before using.

Arcola Family Health Clinic welcomes new doctor Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Arcola Family Health Clinic and Hospital have welcomed a new practitioner to the community.

Dr. Remon Ghaly is from Egypt where he practiced medicine for 14 years prior to coming to Canada.

“My father used to work in a small community and I used to go with him to work, so I saw the physicians there and thought about it a lot, it became a goal for me,” Ghaly explained. “Ever since I was about 10-years-old this is what I wanted to do.”

Arriving in Canada in 2010, Ghaly was joined by his wife and two children. Ghaly studied and wrote his exams in Ontario.

“Sask Docs came out to Ontario in 2012, a group of friends that I used to study with heard that they would be in Toronto and we decided to go,” Ghaly said. “It was a long process. I had been offered something in Newfoundland, but I wanted to come to Saskatchewan with my family.”

with Sask Docs, Ghaly and his family moved to Calgary where Ghaly worked as at Rockyview General Hospital.

The opportunity to work in Saskatchewan finally presented itself and in discussion with Sun Country, Ghaly found that he would be headed out to Arcola. He and his family visited the area and very much liked what they saw.

“I’ve been in Arcola for one week, which isn’t very much time,” Ghaly said. “But I’ve been in Saskatchewan since last January.”

“It’s a quiet community and there are a lot of nice people here. I’ve seen a lot of nice people and there are perfect staff at the clinic and hospital. My main target here is to start my practice in Canada; I’m very thankful to Sask Docs and Sun Country to be able to start my career again.”

Ghaly emphasized that the people in the community have been extremely welcoming.

“I’ve met a lot of people and they are all very nice, everyone who sees me says, ‘Hi,’” Ghaly said with a smile. “I haven’t had that in Canada yet because we lived in Calgary and out in Ontario, both very busy places. It’s very nice to have that here. It makes me feel very comfortable here.”

Lionel Boutin & Friends Second Annual Memorial Night featured by CBC

Dr. Remon Ghaly has started work at the Arcola Family Health Clinic and is excited to begin his practice in Canada after years of practicing medicine in his home of Egypt.

The Second Annual Lionel Boutin and Friends Memorial Tribute was held Saturday, June 4 at the Prairie Dog Drive-In near Carlyle. The event allows members of the community to pay tribute to loved ones while donating funds to local charities. Ray and Frances Boutinalong with daughters Jannelle and Simonestarted the event as a way to pay tribute to Ray’s father, Lionel Boutin. This year, the tribute also attracted the interest of CBC’s Radio-Canada, who were on hand to cover the story. Council introduces paperless billing Lynne Bell

Carlyle Town Council held their regular meeting Wednesday, June 1 at the Carlyle Civic Centre with Deputy Mayor Martin Tourand presiding.

Paperless billing Residents of Carlyle now have the option of choosing paperless billing. Details can be found on the town’s website at www.townofcarlyle.com.

Sun Country Health Region Alderman and Sun Country Health Region board member, Brian Romaniuk met with members of the Arcola Health Group in an effort to find a solution to this area’s physician procurement concerns. Romaniuk told council the meeting was: “Productive and positive, and members of both communities are working together to get a doctor or doctors for our area.”

Dog waste Council has received complaints about dog waste in town, especially within Lions Parkincluding on the ball diamonds. The Town of Carlyle urges dog owners to pick up their pets’ waste and to dispose of it in a proper manner, so that everyone can enjoy Carlyle’s parks and playgrounds.

Football All-Star: Marshall Delorme’s road to the Regina Thunder Lynne Bell

Eighteen-year-old football player Marshall Delorme has played in the Saskatchewan Bowl, made the Manitoba All-Star team, and now, has been signed to the Regina Thunder and will attend their fall football camp. Delorme’s career has also taken him to the football-crazy state of Texas-where he competed against teams from both the Lonestar State and Mexico. However, the young athlete-who plays on the defensive line-says that the game has also taught him some universal lessons-the importance of self-discipline, respect for oneself and others, and how critical it is for a player to manage their emotions during competition.

“You can’t be nice while you’re playing football,” says Delorme, a grade 12 student at Carlyle’s Gordon F. Kells High School. “But you have to control your anger. Once you let an opposing player get stuck in your head, you’re done. You can’t be afraid to tackle someone, so in that sense, you have to play dirty. But you do have to play fair and remember self-discipline and self respect.”

“What you do on the field doesn’t just affect you, it affects your team. You have to work together every play, so if one person gets upset, it affects the whole team.”

“One time, a player threw his helmet on the ground, because he was mad,” he says. “I just stood the helmet up on the bench. That’s a big part of discipline. You hopefully control yourself or you try and make things right for your team.”

“A lot of times, there are cheap shots and mouthy players on the field,” says Delorme. “Once there was a really cocky running back on the opposing team. He scored the first play of the game and as soon as I could, I pushed him. It was a game where I received an award for the most tackles. It’s not personal, but it’s really important to channel your aggression the right way. And that’s on the field, doing your best to help your team win.”

Delorme’s most recent accomplishment is his selection to the Regina Thunder’s roster. He has been officially signed and will attend two more of the Thunder’s camps-one at the end of July and one in the fall.

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

Carlyle RCMP responded to numerous calls to service between Thursday, May 26, and Friday, June 3.

911 calls There were numerous static 911 calls.

All calls were checked into but they were either caused by issues with the phone lines or weather-related issues.

Assaults There were two assaults in the Carlyle area which are under investigation. One report of assault in the Carlyle area has led to charges and one assault report in the Kisbey area has led to charges as well.

There was a fight at Kenosee Lake, but they were gone when RCMP arrived.

Assistance RCMP aided other police services during this time.

Members attended Treaty Days at White Bear and Pheasant Rump. Members wore their Red Serge as part of a tradition that goes back to the signing of the Treaties.

There was a report of individuals driving ATVs without helmets in the Carlyle area.

Assistance was given in four child wel-

fare matters.

There is an ongoing drug investigation in the area.

Carlyle detachment is hosting surrounding detachments for their annual qualifications in handgun, shotgun, and rifle.

Mischief There was a report of mischief at a party of someone causing problems.

Mischief to property was reported in Carlyle and there were two calls of mischief to property which originated in Kisbey as well.

A fight with a family member resulted in a mischief investigation.

Break and enter There were a total of 12 break and enters in the Carlyle area during this time and the matters are under investigation.

A break and enter occurred in Kisbey at a shop. Charges have been laid.

Failure to comply An individual was found to have failed in complying with their release conditions.

Fraud There were numerous reports of fraud called into the RCMP. Impaired driving There were reports of individuals driving while impaired. In one instance RCMP located a driver who gave two samples of 250mg percent, the legal limit is 80mg percent.

Collisions There was a colli-

sion north of Redvers involving a semi.

A collision resulting in injury resulted near Manor when a driver lost control on a gravel road.

There were several other collisions causing property damage reported, but no injuries.

Other traffic infractions RCMP gave out a variety of tickets for driving infractions in-

cluding seatbelt tickets ($175), tickets regarding municipal bylaws, speeding tickets with a high of $136 this past week, and driving without a licence ($150).

Theft Investigation of a report in Forget is under investigation.

There was a report of theft in Carlyle, but it was determined to have been unfounded as a purse was mistakenly

taken by an individual thinking it belonged to their friend. The purse was returned immediately and was an honest accident.

An individual lent their bank card out and reported that it had been used inappropriately.

Someone has been charged in a theft of a wallet.

Robbery An individual was

assaulted and then an item was stolen from them. There were youth involved and the matter remains under investigation. It has been determined as robbery because of the use of violence in order to take the item.

Uttering threats There were three instances which have been reported as threats being uttered. The investigation is ongoing.

U.S. Open might shine light on who’s No. 1

By Bruce Penton Golf fans are looking for a No. 1, anxious to crown a dominant successor to Tiger Woods.

So who will it be?

The trio in contention for that title have been batting it around like a ping pong ball and what’s happened is that the pro game is three times as interesting as it was when Woods was the overwhelming favourite just by teeing it up.

This week’s U.S. Open at Oakmont, located in a suburb of Pittsburgh, should help to clarify the situation, but you never know, a no-name like Lucas Glover or Michael Campbell might come along and shock the world, too. Still, as 156 of the world’s best tee it up in the most important tournament in the United States starting Thursday, all eyes will be on the big three — Jason Day of Australia, Jordan Spieth of the United States and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland.

In 2014, McIlroy moved to No. 1 by winning two major titles, giving him four by

the age of 25. Then he messed up an ankle playing soccer in 2015 while Spieth turned dominant, winning two majors, finishing in the top four in the other two and winning the Tour Championship, pushing aside McIlroy and moving to No. 1. This year, Day has taken over top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking, winning the final major of the year in 2015 and posting six top 10s, including three victories, so far in 2016.

It’s fun to be a golf fan these days. Day, Spieth and McIlroy are all personable and likeable, and all three are coming off victories prior to last week’s Memorial at Dublin, Ohio. Day was the winner at the Players Championship; McIlroy won the Irish Open — the ‘fifth major’ in his world — and Spieth won in his home state of Texas by taking the Colonial in late May, eliminating all the negativity associated with his meltdown on the 12th hole at Augusta in April that handed the green jacket to Brit Danny Willet.

Now that McIlroy’s ankle is fixed, Spieth’s psyche is repaired and Day seems comfortable sitting in the No. 1 world-ranking spot, what could be more exciting than watching how the showdown at Oakmont plays out?

A fad sweeping Canada

You’re locked in a room.

How do you get out? There’s been clues left for you to escape, but you have to figure them out within the hour otherwise you lose. But it’s ok, losing doesn’t mean you’re forever locked in, it simply means your game is over and you can try again for another $25. It’s Kelly Running a new fad sweeping across Observer Staff Canada in the past few years, they’re called Escape Rooms and are being touted as a great way for to spend time with friends and family, and an even better way to encourage team building in the office.

Years ago whenever we had time in our computer class we would ask to play games on a website. There was a series called “Escape the [insert version here].” It ranged from a car to a bathroom to a house, and they were quite fun. You had to search for items that you could use to help you get out and figure out just how you were to escape.

What was once a popular video game has turned into reality with escape rooms being built in different cities, most recently that I discovered was one in Regina called Escape Club. Apparently you have one hour to figure out the puzzles, clues, and riddles in the room to escape or win.

It is described as live gaming entertainment and you work together to escape with a group. It requires the use of logic, skill, speed, and teamwork to make it through. In Regina the game is titled, “The Curse of the Evil Genie” and your group is locked inside the evil genie’s magic lamp, where you must identify which 10 of the “Tales of the Thousand and One Nights” are the genie’s favourites.

I remember loving the games, but I finished only one of the versions without a helpful hint from Google, they created a sense of urgency and forced you to think through a lot of scenarios. I often got stuck about halfway through and would need to find a hint before being able to move on.

I’m intrigued by the premise of doing it in real life. It sounds like an interesting adventure for an hour. The first escape room was developed in 2006 and by 2015 the premise grew with over 2,800 escape rooms being developed.

As I was looking into this popular trend I found an article in the Washington Post which summarized why it’s such a popular feature.

We grow up with adventure games and movies: Indiana Jones positioning the Staff of Ra just so in order to reveal a secret or Nathan Drake of the Uncharted Games series to solve puzzles in an effort to find a treasure.

Ultimately you’re in a room and everything you need to escape is in there with you… you just have to figure out how to access and use it all.

I personally think that it sounds like quite a bit of fun. It sounds challenging and exciting, it’s a giant intricate game that leaves winning up to you and your group figuring out how to escape. Did you get that puzzle right? Did you miss something that you shouldn’t have? Can you make it through without a hint, or as you’re racing against time to get out and stuck, do you accept a little help?

It just sounds like an interesting and fun way to spend an hour with friends. It’s just really quite intriguing to me.

Here comes the bride... eventually The mother of the bride had little choice. She woke up the bridesmaids at 2:00 am to tell them the potato salad she had made to feed the 200 wedding guests hadn’t been kept cold enough and she needed to start over. She sent her husband to awaken the market garden owner to get more potatoes and by the time my sister and the other bridesmaids got to the Shelley Luedtke kitchen there were soup pots of water ready to go so, my sister explained, “We all sat down and just started peeling.”

My father was a pastor. He officiated at many weddings and as a result saw a lot of different hiccups and glitches occur. Like the bridal party who wanted to avoid a rainstorm so finished getting ready in the basement of the church. As they headed upstairs the bride asked for her bouquet only to be met with a look of bewilderment. In the family’s upheaval to get everyone to the church to finish dressing, no one remembered the boxes of bouquets that were left sitting in the family room-a 20-minute drive--one way. Or the ceremony on a very hot day which began with a guest becoming ill in the pew, followed by the groom who fainted at the altar.

I didn’t attend this ceremony but I certainly had empathy for their musician. He started playing his guitar about 30 minutes before the ceremony start time, oblivious to the fact that at the bride’s home things were not going as planned. At the appointed ceremony time the bride was just getting into the bathtub. By the time the processional got going he had been playing for almost 75 minutes. I’m told he later said it was a toss-up between the cramped wrists and the fear that there would be no wedding at all that caused the greatest discomfort. If it was concerning for him, I can only imagine what the groom must have been thinking.

But ask my husband about that. Our organist was given the cue to begin the processional music but just as she did, our 4-year old ring bearer announced he needed to go to the bathroom. A 4-year old in a tuxedo is not a quick process. While my mother tended to him we stalled for as long as

we could and then decided we had to start moving so each bridesmaid headed out on a command to “Walk slow!”

The preparations for a wedding, graduation or commemoration can become all-consuming for some. We’re told these are the most important days of our life so everything must be perfect.

Are they important days? Most definitely.

Days that can benefit from careful planning? Absolutely. But expecting everything to run smoothly-where there is a sense of perfection needing to be achieved--not only is unrealistic, it runs contrary to the very event they are celebrating. Because… surprise! That’s not how life goes. It does not run an uncomplicated course. We can count on that.

Ceremonies can be unique, memorable, simple or extravagant. They mark important events like graduations, awards and of course marriages. The ceremony is the celebration--but there is so much more involved than the ceremony itself.

A convocation is highly anticipated but the college graduate will better remember the hundreds of hours spent in lecture halls, labs and libraries than the seconds it takes to be handed a scroll. A medal ceremony is exhilarating but only the athlete knows full well the sweat, fatigue and injuries they experienced on their way to achieving that goal. And couples would be well served to remember it’s not just saying “for better or for worse, in sickness and in health” that matters, but staying committed when troubles come, and being at the hospital bedside when the unexpected occurs.

Hiccups, glitches, and outright devastating blindsides can happen at any moment. It’s inconvenient, disconcerting, or downright painful. But it’s life. And sometimes it isn’t until you’ve been knocked off course or had to deal with the disappointment of things not going as hoped that you see the beauty and feel the gratitude of getting aright again.

The ceremonies we are invited to or are participants in are dates important enough to make priorities in our life. They are significant in giving a focal point to what is being celebrated. They may not go perfectly, and that’s okay. Because it is not the ceremony that gives meaning to our lives, but our lives that gives meaning to the ceremony.

That’s my outlook.

Seeing things differently . . .

A short time ago, in Oct. 2014, Canada celebrated Kevin Vickers as a hero for his part in an armed take-down of an assailant in the Parliament buildings. At the time Vickers was Sergeant-atArms for the House of Commons.

Nearly two-years later Vickers returns to being a topic in the media as he dove into action in Ireland. Vickers has become the Canadian Ambassador to Ireland and in a State ceremony held in remembrance of British soldiers who died during the 1916 Easter Rising got into a little bit of trouble.

It is a politically sensitive commemoration which was held in Dublin and an Irish protester had arrived. Vickers flew into action grabbing the protester and struggled to remove him. As they grappled, Vickers pushed the protester back and eventually security came to arrest the protester.

The issue that developed surrounded a difference of opinion. Some have heralded Vickers as a hero, going so far as to call him an “am-bad-assador.” Others however are not as impressed, after all he’s no longer an RCMP officer, but an ambassador and that’s not proper conduct for a diplomat to be engaging in.

Veronica Kitchen, a political scientist who specializes in international security at the University of Waterloo told the National Post, “Protecting his own safety is OK. But given that he was at an event about commemorating British soldiers who were killed in the Easter Rising – which is still, 100 years later, diplomatically sensitive in the United Kingdom – it was probably not a great time for him to be using force against a protester.”

Kitchen also alluded to Vickers taking action as being part of his 29 years of training and instincts as being an RCMP member.

Additionally it is said that by acting Vickers actually forced the Irish police’s hand in handling the individual as a violent threat. As a result it could actually create a larger security threat in Ireland as it could attract violence from the Irish Republican Movement.

Ultimately, is what he did right or wrong?

Although he acted heroically, politics dictate that what he did was not the best decision. Actions as a politician are constantly polarized and blown out of proportion, especially when it comes to social media. People like to say their innermost feelings which they would never actually say to someone’s face, but somehow writing it gives them a sense of detachment from what they say. Then other people simply like to entice people by “trolling” sights, simply to cause issues.

So, a politician or diplomat in this day and age have to be extra careful in what they do because absolutely everything is under the microscope and the world has become much smaller.

His actions could potentially lead to issues for the Government of Canada, just like anyone’s could. What they do has affects how the world sees Canada, which is the same for any politician or diplomat from any country. They are supposed to be embodying our country and because of that they have to represent themselves in the best way possible.

Some will say Vickers did the right thing and others will question him, but ultimately it’s a difficult world to navigate these days and one situation may make or break his position as ambassador.

He’s been called the guy you’d want to share a foxhole with and he’s been called the guy whose behavior is unbecoming of a diplomat, but Canadian Ambassasdor to Ireland, Kevin Vickers’ recent takedown of a protestor at an Irish cemetary gained this country attention throughout the world, and called into question whether this Canadian hero was fit to represent this country overseas.

Vickers, of course, became a national hero in October 2014 when he shot an armed terroristMichael Zehaf-Bibeau- inside the Parliament buildings in Ottawa, where he served as sergeantat-arms for the House of Commons. The 29-year veteran of the RCMP undoubtedly saved many lives that day, due to his great personal courage and willingness to take decisive action. And a man who had already gained the respect and affection of those on Parliament Hill, found himself lauded by Canadians from coast to coast, the vast majority of whom had never met him before.

After video surfaced of Vicker’s Irish episodewhere he physically removed a yelling protestor during a state ceremony in remembrance of British soldiers who died during Ireland’s Easter Risingsocial media exploded. Vickers was largely praised for his actions-with one admirer dubbing him “The AmBadAssador.” Even politicians got in on the act, with Conservative MP Jason Kenney writing “Who needs superheroes when you’ve got Kevin Vickers?” on his Twitter account.

However, criticism of Vickers’ actions soon surfaced, too.

As a citizen of a democratic country, 41-yearold Brian Murphy has the right to exercise his democratic right to protest. However, it’s also understandable hat a yelling, angry protestor might set Vickers’ personal alarm bells ringing, especially afte the traumatic events of 2014 on Parliament Hill. Add to that his almost 30 years as a member of the RCMP, and suddenly the actions of Canada’s ambassador are understandable.

If Brian Murphy hadn’t turned out to be simply an angry Irish citizen with a cause he felt compelled to angrily and noisily champion, things could have turned out very differently indeed that day in Dublin. Then, we may have been calling Vickers a hero, a lifesaver and heaven forbid, someone who sacrificed his life for others. In other instances around the world, a yelling protestor equals a suicide bomber.

Kevin Vickers may have jumped the gun and overreacted in Ireland, but his intentions were good and the learning curve from someone who provides protection to someone who now receives it-for example, a diplomat-must be a steep one.

Kevin Vickers’ entire professional life has been one of unselfish, unobtrusive service. Any celebrity he has garnered as the result of his past heroic actions has not been sought by him. He is a worthy representative of his country and should receive a second chance as he tackles the tricky transition from police officer to forien service officer.

Lampman sports weekend enjoyed by all Kelly Running Observer Staff

The community of Lampman along with the Lampman and District Lions Club hosted their annual Sports Weekend Friday, June 3, to Sunday, June 5.

Slo pitch started off Friday night with 14 teams out of 20 having their first game. A total of seven games were held on Friday night, including one under the big lights, which Brittany Fox with Lampman Recreation said felt like watching the big leagues.

The Gress Electric Beach volleyball ran that evening from 6p.m. to 9 p.m. A total of four teams took part in the tournament. A team from Carlyle took home the prize money.

The camp grounds were full and the food booth and beer gardens were open for the night.

The movie in the park, featuring The Good Dinosaur, set up by Woodley Well Services and TnT was well attended. The playschool provided snacks throughout the evening, running a canteen at the movie. It was a hit amongst the young crowd.

On Saturday, June 4, the local 4-H club cooked up breakfast in the curling rink, getting the day started off right, as slo pitch started up early with the remaining six teams having their first game.

Men’s hardball was also underway on June 4 with six teams attending.

“We had our first parade since 2009, with over 50 floats. It was six blocks long!” Fox explained.

“We had a car show to follow with 16 cars in total on display.”

The Kids’ Corner from 1p.m. to 5 p.m. included bouncy castles brought in by Ron and Shirley Carson and a petting zoo brought in by Mel Grimes.

The local library had a craft, temporary tattoo, and face painting station.

“We had close to 200 kids bracelets sold this year!” Fox exclaimed. “That was four times more than last year, so it was great to see more families check out the event!”

“Ball continued until 7 p.m. at which time the street dance was ready to go! It was a great night and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect!”

Performing was Third Degree Birnz.

Waking up on Sunday, people enjoyed a breakfast hosted by the Knights of Columbus.

The Lutheran Church had a church service at the curling rink for those interested.

The A and B finals of slo pitch began in the morning with the A-side winner being Smack-aPitch and the B-side winner being Yank Deez.

All teams playing in the beach volleyball and slo pitch tournaments had unique names to the games.

A small ladies softball round robin was hosted with Redvers, Estevan, and Oxbow each going home with one win and one loss.

Men’s hardball finished up, which saw the Carlyle Cardinals taking the A-final and the Lampman Pirates taking the B-final.

Additionally, three teams of under 12 provincial girls took part in Sunday ball games as well.

“The weekend was a huge success and wouldn’t have been possible without all the help of our so many generous volunteers and staff! And all those who attended the event!” Fox exclaimed.

The Lampman and District Lions Club helped put on the Sports Weekend and showcased a great float during the first parade the weekend has had since 2009.

Town of Alameda & R.M. of Moose Creek #33 Fire Department Rodeo

A few members of the Alameda Fire Department pause for a photo at the Town of Alameda & R.M. of Moose Creek #33 Fire Department Rodeo, held Sunday, June 5 in Alameda. The event featured teams of volunteer fire fighters from Alameda, Bienfait, Carlyle, Carnduff, Manor, Redvers and Stoughton. This future firefighter was in awe of the trucks and firefighters at the Alameda Firefighters’ Rodeo on Sunday, June 5 in Alameda.

Even though firefighters use technology and advanced equipment, they are still called upon to use physical strength, speed and old-school techniques such as this bucket brigade.

Judge and Carlyle Fire & Rescue Chief Don Van Meer looks on during a rescue competition at the Alameda Firefighters’ Rodeo on Sunday, June 5. Teams from throughout the area competed in seven events under a hot June sun. The winners of this year’s competition was the team from the Redvers Fire Department.

Here, firefighters compete in two events-rolling hoses and participating in a timed event which simulates a structure fire. “All firefighters never know what they’ll be called on to do,” says Alameda and Carlyle volunteer firefighter, Dwayne Henderson. “This rodeo is a great way to get motivated and to practice all of those skills they could be called on to use-especially in rural areas.”

This trophy was awarded to the Redvers Fire Department’s team.

“The winning team gets to display the trophy in their firehouse for the year and also gets unlimited bragging rights,” according to Alameda firefighter and event MC, Jason Carritt.

Fire fighters competed in a life-saving scenario where they “rescued” a 165-pound dummy at the Alameda Firefighters’ Rodeo, Sunday, June 5 in Alameda.

The Alameda Firefighters Rodeo featured seven eventsgearing up, a gear up obstacle course, a ball competition, a bucket brigade, a gear up and hose lay, a pack up and victim rescue and a pack up and hose event. Firefighters

from throughout the area were timed and graded on their skills which replicated real life conditions. Gearing up meant that the volunteers were timed on their ability to put on their protective equipment and oxygen tanks, something they did numerous times throughout the day in the hot sun. “There are lots of calls that come in and with all of them, time is one of the most important factors,” says organizer Dwayne Henderson.

“The sooner we can get to a scene the better, but every firefighter has got to be prepared.”

Being active and having fun at Arcola School Kelly Running Observer Staff

Arcola School hosted their yearly elementary track and field meet on Friday, June 3. A beautiful day to be outside, youth took part in a variety of competitions encouraging friendly competition and being active.

With the sun out and warm temperatures abounding, the Arcola School held their annual Track Day for the elementary students. This event lasted for the day on Friday, June 3. With parents and grandparents there to support the youth, the students gave it their all and did their best as they competed.

Though last year they had an obstacle course and have experimented with different events in the past, it is the common track and field events which have become the most popular, leading to more of them being added this year.

Youth took part in a variety of events including hurdles, javelin, and discus. The hurdles were set quite low for the Kindergarten kids, while they were raised for the different groups.

Though javelin sounds dangerous with young children, the school actually has indoor javelins which have a plastic end thus allowing the young-

sters to safely start training and competing at any age. The discus also saw the safe, rubber inside discus brought out for the youth to try.

Other events included the ball throw, a long and short race, high jump, long jump, standing broad jump and a favourite amongst many, tug of war.

Participating grades included youth from Kindergarten to grade six. The grade six students were the captains of the teams, giving them a little bit more responsibility throughout the day, while grade nine students were out running the events for the day.

One grade nine, Nick Singleton, stood out to the elementary students setting a positive example, as he made quite an impressive jump during a break at the high jump station.

Moving the bar up to a substantial height he cleared it with ease. “Ooo’s” and “Ahh’s” were heard all around by the young students watching as they expressed wanting to be able to do that in the future too.

The second big part of the day was the garage sales which brings friends from around the area to look and visit along with lunch provided at the Kennedy Friendship Centre.

Congratulations to Olivia Lawrence in her winnings in the high school provincials on June 2nd & 3rd in Regina, she won silver in the 100 m, silver in 200m, gold in 400m, 4th in long jump, 4th in 4x400m in relay. She also won the senior girl aggregate high point award - a very dedicated girl in all of the competitions and very proud parents Don and Marie.

Clarence Bender was very happy to have his nephew Byron Bender spend some time with him.

Byron lives in Tucson, Arizona.

May 30th was also a very exciting day for George and Patsy Bourhis when Joey and Shayna

Humphries of Carlyle had a baby boy, 7 pounds 11 oz., 19 inches. His name is Donivan Kane.

Tim and Colleen Daku were also very proud grandparents to Camryn Rose Petrachek born to Jessica and Chad Petrachek of Esterhazy, another healthy baby weighing 8 pounds 8 oz. great grandmothers Sue Cummins and Violet Daku.

Congratulations to Jena Trail and Riley Levai on their wedding which took place in Kipling June 4th. They reside in the Kennedy district.

Friday afternoon Yvonne Bertalon and I spent time visiting with Emma Yanyu at the Villa in Oxbowóshe asked us to say hello to all her old friends around Kennedy.

The last item for this week: Kennedy is very happy to have the local coffee shop on Main Street open once more. Brings a few more people up town.

Mark and Velda Weatherald and Leona Birnie travelled to Dartmouth, NS recently. They spent a couple of weeks visiting with Filipe and Rayna deSouza and Maya.

Visiting with Joe and Jean Brisbois on the weekend was their daughter, Donna Schaffer from Regina Beach. She had a golf date with Garth and visited with Mark and Gerry Brisbois and Joanne Mills while here.

Lori Kemmer has sold her home on Choo-Foo Crescent. Gerry and Betty Wyatt from White Bear are the new owners. Welcome to Wawota!!

A baby shower was held at the Oliver residence on Sunday, June 5th in honour of Dawson, infant son of Bailey Pryce and Jonathan Gibson.

Coralee Brehaut and Rhonda Hall travelled to Whitehorse recently and spent a week there visiting with Leonard Hall.

Roy Bottolotto was away at Sask conference last week and the congregation lead the service.

Several took parts, reading the announcements, saying the prayers, etc. I did “Time with the Young”, Wendy (Porter) Brehaut read the sermon and Nicki (Steele) played the music. Wendy commented that it was like when they were in grade 2 in Kelso and I was their teacher! I might take a bit of credit for Wendy’s reading ability but really can’t take any credit for Nicki’s musical ability !!

The month of June is slipping through very quickly, the gardens are beginning to look good as well as the crops. Once again we are living in a good part of the world.

A couple of items ending in May ó Don and Alice Cox attended the wedding of Ashley Cox (granddaughter) and Neil Parke at Gladstone Mountain Resort, BC on Saturday, May 28th.

Dean and Doreen Gardner and all their family attended the wedding of their son Grant and Ashley in Saskatoon on May 28th. Another outdoor wedding which was very nice. Congratulations to both wedding couples.

Kennedy certainly came alive on Sat., June 4th.

First of all the gathering at the community rink brought many people to a very interesting dayóyes, the second annual 4H Jackpot show was held in the rink. This event is put on by the Kennedy 4H beef club (all 20 members were in attendance) this event is open to 4H members in the area, 75 participants came from the southeast communities in Saskatchewan with over 90 head in the one day show. Competitions included judging, showmanship, steer & heifer projects. Prize money was paid out with $6,500.00 added money being contributed by the committee through sponsorship and selling 10-30í five bar panels. The event was a huge success, Iola Smyth was very proud of her grandson Tyler being one of the judges, the Smyth families have been true 4H supporters for many years. The Debenham family have also been active 4H members for some time and Morgan being the youngest member of that family did very well with her day.

She received first in the Cloverbud judging, 3rd in Cloverbud showmanship and 8th in steer jackpot final (the only family relation I have in 4H, I have always been very proud of the 4H clubs through out my life). Congratulations to all the members taking part. You are all winners, something to cherish all your life.

Jean Ball received word that her brother, Edwin Loseth of Creston, BC had passed away on May 23, 2016 at the age of 69. Sincere sympathy is extended to Jean, Garnett and family.

This past weekend (June 3-4) was the Alida Sports Days with 12 ball teams registering for the Slow-pitch tournament. The teams participating from Carnduff were the Rough Sliders, Master Batters, Master Blasters and the John Beers team; from Redvers was the Ball Busters; from Glen Ewen was High Octane (Ray Wright team) and of course Alida with 6 teams - The Thumpers (Quince Boutin team), Chicks Dig the Deep Balls (Colby Potapinski team), Cow-Sh-Its-Junk-Pot (Tim Cowan team), Blue Ballaz (Cory Jensen team), 361 Café (Fullers team) and the 3-Star Team. The tournament began Friday evening around 7:00 p.m. with 4 teams taking to the diamonds and on Saturday the games started at 8:00 a.m., continued all day with finals being played around 7:00 p.m. Results were as follows: A-side saw two Alida teams placing 1st and 2nd when The Thumpers defeating Chicks Dig the Deep Balls. B-side winner was High Octane (Glen Ewen) when they defeated The Rough Sliders (Carnduff).

Congratulations to these teams! It was a tournament well played by all the teams who entered and was especially enjoyed by all the spectators, young and old. Saturday morning also saw 65 breakfasts being served to guests at the hall from 8:00-10:30 a.m. After 10:30, at the sports grounds, the Beer Gardens and Concession Stand with delicious hamburgers, beef-on-a-bun and of course hot dogs were available all day. Later in the afternoon the Bouncy Castle arrived was set up and available for the youngsters to enjoy, which they thoroughly did. All in all the Alida Sports Days was another successful event for the Alida Rec. Board. Their appreciation

Parenting Tips from Regional KidsFirst

Temper tantrums Tantrums are part of children growing up.

They may start around 12 months of age as your child starts to become more independent. Tantrums are very common in 2 year old children – hence “the terrible twos.” If tantrums are managed in a calm and positive manner, they will become less frequent as your child gets older. Part of our job as parents is to teach our children how to manage frustration and anger in appropriate ways.

Every child will express emotion in a different manner. Typically, negative emotions such as frustration and anger are more difficult to manage.

Every child has a different temperament. Some children will hardly have tantrums and just accept what mom or dad says. Other children are not necessarily so easy. Some children will have a 20 second tantrum, while others will last much long-

er. Crying, screaming, yelling, stomping, rolling around on the floor are all very common tantrums for a toddler.

Typically, toddlers will become frustrated when they are: ● Told no ● Do not get their way ● Are unable to manage a task ● Do not have the words they need to express themselves, or ● Are simply tired.

Our toddlers learn that if they have tantrums and their caregiver just ‘gives in’, they are learning that if they scream they get what they want. Toddler wins that round! Essentially, toddlers will crank up the escalation of their tantrum to make other people give in to their demands.

Visiting with the Cowan’s (Tim, Shelly, Ainsley, Gray and Edel) over the weekend were Murray, Fiona and Adam Cowan (Estevan), Jeff Cowan (Regina) who all participated in the tournament. Dustin Cowan (Estevan) came on Saturday afternoon to watch the ball games. They enjoyed renewing acquaintances and making new ones during the day’s activities. Jeff and Dustin especially enjoyed their hamburger snack and visit with Hal and Glenda Nielsen.

Visiting with Ken, Diane Potapinski and family was Agatha Potapinski from Regina. Aggie also renewed many acquaintances and found new ones as well throughout the weekend events.

What a great weekend – No Rain at the Alida Sports Day – that’s a first (I’m sure). It was a huge success for the Alida Rec. Board and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Of course we were all near the rink this weekend and noticed that the work on the outside seems to be completed and now the renovations to the inside should be well underway – hopefully it will all be done and ready for use this coming winter season. That’s enough talk of winter, let’s get back to the correct season.

Noticed that my garden is beginning to show the rows of produce that were planted and of course the weeds are trying to outgrow everything – a job waiting to be done. Oh the joy of gardening! The men are busy with spraying, keeping the sprayer busy and working hard when the wind co-operates and subsides. Do be careful out there working with those chemicals guys. Oh yes, it was brought to my attention that an error had been made last week – added 10 years to a young ladies age – that will never do! Sorry Nicole – hope you had a great 40th birthday. [Check my e-mail and it did say 50 – we both goofed – now corrected and that’ll give both sender and myself more birthdays to enjoy]. One reason some do not attend is because they do not know what to say to God. And they are not sure if God will listen. It is awkward to face God on Sunday morning if you haven’t talked to him all week.

But not knowing what to say to God and wondering if he will listen is simply a reflection of our not knowing God. That was the natural state of mankind for millions of years. We did not know God. Then came the incarnation. It was time. Wow! The heavens rang with the songs of angels. Stars moved about and many real prophecies were fulfilled. And in due time the whole redemption story unfolded.

And we were left with what? Confusion?

Doubt? We still do not see A and B clearly. Often it is only the fear of death that gets us to focus on the question. But so much was left with us when Jesus ascended and the Holy Spirit came upon us.

Father Brendan McGuire compared the Trinity to a rose. Science can analyse and categorize every aspect of the rose. But the real meaning of the rose can only be experienced when someone receives a rose and knows what it means. It is love!

The face lights up as one smells the rose.

The agriculture sector under scrutiny

By Calvin Daniels It is to the point almost every day on the calendar has been assigned a ‘designation’ by somebody.

The three levels of government are always slapping an it’s ‘a something day’ on the calendar, and when they aren’t organizations and groups are quick to do it in their stead.

At some point I suspect having a designated day actually had people lifting their heads out of a good book, or away from the television screen long enough to be aware the day had been given some added significance.

But that was many years ago, and today I doubt many blink at the mention, instead they keep posting about the untimely shooting of a gorilla that could have endangered a child, or they are posting cat pics with some silly saying all over social media.

It is now a bit of the boy who cried wolf phenomenon. Do it too often and people eventually stop paying attention.

The result is some industries which deserve some additional recognition at times get loss in the general malaise.

A case in point is agriculture.

The sector is about as vital as there is. Outside of air and water there is nothing we require more than food to survive.

We are generally beholding to nature for our water and air, although we hold a responsibility to protect the quality of both, but the agriculture sector is crucial in terms of food production.

The agriculture sector comes under a lot of scrutiny today, taking heat for the use of fertilizer, weed and insect control chemicals, genetically modified crops, and more and while I might argue much of the concern is unjustified, I’ll leave that alone for the time being.

Instead, I’ll just remind that the concerns are generally brought by people sitting down to rather bountiful meals every day, with the food on the plate still rather reasonably priced given how critical it is to survival.

So a day that reminds people of the importance of the overall farm sector is not a bad idea, even if it gets lost in the crowd of many designated days.

Canadian agriculture representatives recently announced February 16, 2017 will be Canada’s Agriculture Day – a time to celebrate and draw a closer connection between Canadians, our food and the people who produce it.

“We all eat food yet many people don’t automatically make the connection between what’s on their plate and the commitment and care that goes into raising livestock, growing crops or processing food,” said Crystal Mackay, in a prepared release.

In the 1930s, more than 90 per cent of Canadians had a connection to agriculture. Today, it’s less than three per cent, according to Statistics Canada census information.

“Every link in the food production chain – from the farm to the grocery store and restaurant – plays a vital role in bringing food to your table every day,” said Mackay, whose group organized the summit. “Canada’s Agriculture Day is an opportunity to get involved, celebrate and be a part of the conversation about food and farming.”

Candace Hill, manager of Agriculture More Than Ever, said Canada’s Agriculture Day compliments the industry-led initiative that has attracted over 470 partner organizations and 2,100 individuals committed to creating positive perceptions of agriculture. Launched more than four years ago, Agriculture More Than Ever’s goal is to encourage those involved in agriculture to speak up and speak positively about the industry.

“It’s all about showing our love, pride and passion for an industry that puts food on our tables,” Hill said in the release. “We want to give everyone the opportunity to be part of something big and important.”

Hill encourages the industry, organizations and individuals to mark the date on calendars and come up with their own ideas and activities to promote and celebrate Canadian agriculture.

And therein may lie the key to raising the status of Agriculture Day to one where people outside the industry become aware and engaged. If those involved in the sector can create compelling events around the designated day for people to learn more about the importance of the sector everyone can benefit.

Society most certainly needs agriculture, but the public also needs to better understand the industry in order to better trust and respect the efforts of farmers.

Paying tribute after the loss of a child

By Evelyn Smith The Compassionate Friends of Southeast Saskatchewan held a balloon release on June 4, 2016 at the Carievale Highway Park. It was also the one year anniversary of the formation of the chapter.

Around thirty-five people who had all experienced the death of a child, grandchild or sibling came to release balloons in memory of their beloved. Before the balloon release members shared poems in memory of our children and siblings. Lisa Henderson sang, “Dancing in the Sky”, a song by Dani and Lizzy. After the balloon release, children present enjoyed some fun games.

Everyone enjoyed the barbecue sponsored by Border Corner Meats, Renovation Rescue, Three Star Trucking and Matt Smith Oilfield Service. Potluck salads and desserts were provided by those attending.

Last June, Evelyn and Matthew Smith of Carievale, along with Lisa Henderson of Carnduff and Gail Lethbridge of Gainsborough, started The Compassion Friends chapter at Carievale to support parents who have lost a child. We have several families attending from

Southwest Manitoba as well.

Unfortunately, death knows no age limit. The Compassionate Friends group members know this all too well.

Our children, grandchildren and siblings have died at different ages for different reasons.

Child loss changes a person and the whole family. We have suffered a loss so devastating that unless you have experienced it, you will never fully understand.

We’ve heard talk of closure. For us closure doesn’t exist. There will never be a day when we can close our losses from our minds. We are still parents of the child we lost. They will still be our children. We hope for healing of our broken hearts, and the ability to still include their memory in our lives.

There are many families in our area who have lost children.

The group meets on the first Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m., SK in the basement of the Carievale Church.

Charles Edward Christopher November 13, 1930 - May 12, 2016 Charles (Charlie) Christopher passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of May 12, 2016 shortly after being admitted to the Moosomin hospital.

Charlie was the seventh of ten children born to Edward and Margaret (Maggie) Christopher. He was born on the family farm seven miles southwest of Wawota. After finishing school, Charlie helped out with the farm while his older brother Ted was in the war and as his father’s health deteriorated. After the war, Charlie worked as a steam engineer on oil rigs for a few years before returning to take over the family farm.

Charlie farmed successfully for over 40 years. He loved the farming life, being out on the land and close to nature. He took a keen interest in local history, the early commercial development of Kenosee Lake, and the role of the Christopher family in that history. He spent a lot of time hunting, going to dances and auctions. He also spent countless hours playing cards with friends and family. In 1992, Charlie retired from farming and moved to Wawota. He built his dream home and a huge shop where he could repair newfound treasures and tinker.

Charlie became a snowbird and spent most winters in Arizona. There, he met the love of his life, Ione. They married in 2004. After a stroke, Charlie faced many challenges with mobility and communication, eventually leading to his residence at the Deer View Lodge.

Charlie is survived by his wife Ione Beimborn; daughter-in-law Rolean (Mark) Wernicke; sisters May Hambleton and Doris Coons; brother Don (Carol) Christopher; sister-in-law Sara Christopher as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family funeral to honour Charlie’s life was held and he was laid to rest in the Fernley Cemetery May 17, 2016.

Don’t ever give up

By Linda Wegner Over the past eleven months I’ve developed a habit that’s brought me great enjoyment and resulted in significant health benefits. Sadly I have to set it aside, at least for the time being.

This week’s article is influenced by a long-awaited appointment with a foot and ankle specialist, by the kindness of dear friends and by the powerful message delivered by our pastor this morning. Here’s a bit of background.

Months ago I began having a lot of pain and inflammation but determined not to give up I maintained my daily habit of walking for an hour. I was thrilled because the weight I needed to lose was coming off slowly but surely. My doctor was pleased too. Problem was that the foot felt as if it needed to come off, too!

When I finally got a call to travel to Vancouver to see the doctor it was

only the kindness of friends who removed some of the fear of travelling in the “big city” and helped reassure me that all was well. After all, for the past three decades we’ve lived in rural areas, a small city and now, in a geographically isolated community.

I can’t express my gratitude to those who drove me to various appointments and helped me throughout those challenging two days.

It was this morning’s sermon that proved to be my spiritual “icing on the cake”, though. Teaching from the book of James, Pastor Sam reminded us that in spite of all that life may throw at us, God is faithful to hear and answer prayer.

“You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord – that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.”

(James 5:11) Many have suffered more than I but I have proved that although life isn’t always good, He is.

But it is better than what rural Saskatchewan residents might be hearing over the next year, that it’s high time the Saskatchewan Party government stopped showing favouritism to its rural Saskatchewan base.

A couple of points of clarity are likely needed here.

First, the only tax exemption in recent years have been on feminine hygiene products, so it just isn’t so.

Yes, Premier Brad Wall and company ran in 2007 on specifically reducing the education tax on agricultural land.

And it would be fair to say that this Sask. Party government has accommodated rural needs for new schools, hospitals and nursing homes in a way that the previous NDP government didn’t.

But to be fair to both the Sask. Party and the NDP governments, most rural amenities have been well established over the decades.

The real question is whether they remain viable or even fair in a world of increasing public debt, structural deficits and this new initiative outlined in the 2016-17 budget that Wall describes as transformational change.

For example, Provincial Auditor Judy Ferguson noted in volume one of her 2016 report that the

province’s long-standing tax rebate for farm fuel, established in 1987, seems to have little identifiable purpose anymore.

“It has not specifically been determined what the fuel exemption program is designed to achieve (other than reducing taxes for eligible individuals or corporations),” Ferguson’s report stated.

The law governing the act describes eligibility as a “farmer is a person who owns or rents land, controls and is responsible for the operation of a farm” and meets at least one of the following criteria: * The person must own or rent at least 75 acres (30 hectares) of cultivated land in Saskatchewan, that is used for the growing of cereal crops; or * The person received gross annual revenue of at least $10,000 from the sale of primary farm products that he or she produced in Saskatchewan.

A person may also qualify as a farmer if he or she is a member or shareholder in a farm organization, such as an agricultural corporation, farm partnership, a farm co-operative, or a farm colony, and contributed substantially to the agricultural production of that farm organization.

So one doesn’t even have to live or pay income taxes in Saskatchewan to qualify for this rebate.

One really doesn’t even have to make his or her living farmer as $10,000 in income or 30 hectares hardly merits consideration as a viable farming operation.

Heck, you only have to live on the farm. You pretty much qualify if you are a farm bookkeeper.

However, if you are a small part-time landscaping company in a city that makes $25,000 a year (doing lawn work or snow clearing) you don’t qualify for a rebate.

Farmers also enjoy provincial sales tax exemption on the farm machinery or pesticides and fertilizers, expenses that would largely be seen as doing business.

Again, in fairness, Ferguson’s report identified $3.9 billion, much of which goes to urban people.

Included in the list of tax exempt items in the 2016-17 budget: Construction, ($486.6 million); fertilizer, pesticide and seed, $163.4 million; basic groceries, ($129.3 million); farm activity, ($120.1 million); direct agents, ($98 million); low-income tax credits, ($90 million); basic groceries, restaurant meals and snack food, ($84.2 million); farm machinery and parts, ($83.8 million); electricity, ($49.4 million); used goods, ($36.5 million); prescription drugs, ($36.2 million); energy efficient appliances including furnaces and boilers, ($33.9 million); fuel for home heating ($28.7 million); reading materials, ($24.8 million), and; children’s clothing ($13.4 million).

So there are a lot of things that government could be looking at in its transformational process.

Sadly, that’s cold comfort for anyone.
