Wawota Rocks Children’s Gala entertains Kelly Running Observer Staff

The 5th Annual Wawota Rocks Children’s Gala was once again a huge success.

The dinner theatre is an event, which welcomes families to the Wawota Town Hall to enjoy an evening of entertainment and fun while raising money for the paediatric brain tumour charity Meagan’s Walk.

The Gala raises money for Meagan’s Walk to honour the memory of a young girl from Wawota, Cienna Friesen daughter of Rochelle and Darren Friesen, who passed away at seven-years-old from Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG).

The young girl is remembered throughout the year and has inspired “Cienna’s Rocken Runners” who walk in Meagan’s Walk to raise money and do what they can to help others. Over the past four years, this has meant over $45,000 raised.

Tickets for the event were sold for $25 – supper, a theatre performance, and a photo booth session.

Additionally there was a silent auction, Chinese auction, face painting, and treasure maps available throughout the evening.

Carlyle Elementary School raising funds to replace removed playground structures Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle Elementary School discovered in August of 2015, following a playground audit completed by the school division, that there was equipment on both playgrounds deemed unsafe.

Principal Tyler Fehrenbach explains, “Over the years standards change. We were actually number one in the division for most equipment in need of being fixed or taken out.”

Play structures deemed unfit have been removed and now the school faces the challenge now of replacing the structures.

“The SCC began fundraising right away, the division has given us a timeline of 10 years to have stuff done by,” Fehrenbach said. “This past December the equipment was removed and we need to replace structures by 2026; but, we don’t want to wait eight years. The kids make do and find ways to play, but they are missing the play structures that were there and it’d be nice to be able to give them something as soon as we can.”

“We’ve also asked the kids what they want to see, they all took surveys in their classes, and from that we have an idea of what they like – climbing and slides were two big ones. We’ve contacted a couple of companies to see what costs look like.”

For two play structures – one in the back playground and one in the front playground – the school is looking at a price tag of $100,000.

“One of the big things people think is how the school uses it so much for lunches and at recesses,

but to be honest that’s just a fraction of the its use.

On weekends and during the summer it’s used by the community and visitors to our community as well.”

“The biggest thing though is that we want to have something here for the kids to do, to keep them engaged.”

The drive to raise funds is being headed by the School Community Council, so if anyone is interested in helping in anyway the school would be very appreciative of it.

Last year Merit Ford hosted a Drive 4UR Community initiative in which they raised $3,580 by donating $20 for every test drive done that day; while the Carlyle PureChem Cougars matched any donations made during the last hour of the event. This is only a fraction of what’s needed, as playground equipment is quite costly.

Be on the lookout for future fundraisers or if interested donations to the playground fund can be made at the school.

Children’s Gala entertains Continued from front In addition to all of that fun, a very popular feature was the mocktail bar, which whipped up all kinds of concoctions that everyone – young and young at heart – enjoyed.

The theatre portion saw volunteers take to the stage dressed as Disney characters to entertain.

evening for photos with the children who were extremely excited to see them.

‘Quilters Call to Action’: Comfort to Humboldt Lynne Bell

Tanya Robertson of Carlyle’s Sew & Sews says the response of the local quilting community to the tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team is just like that of thousands of people from throughout Saskatchewan and beyond.

“Everybody wants to do their part,” says Robertson. “You feel so helpless in a situation like this and you want to do something. And this is the way I can help - by making a quilt and hopefully, providing a bit of comfort to someone who really needs it.”

Robertson is one of many quilters from Saskatchewan who is responding to a ‘Quilters Call to Action’ issued by the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild which made its way to quilting communities via Facebook (see post below).

“Corrine Hewitt of Hanna, Alberta sent it to me,” says Robertson. “And as soon as I got to work, I started cutting, getting fabrics with the team colours (green, dark green, white, gold and black) to use and to donate.”

“I’ll be going up to Saskatoon in a few days, so by then, I hope to have finished at least one quilt,” she says. “So I’ll be taking that. And two bolts of green and yellow backing have gone to Humboldt already.”

“We already have three customers working on full quilt kits for this project and I know more quilters from our local area are at work on quilts in the team colours, too,” adds Robertson. “So I’m planning a trip to Saskatoon in early May to deliver those.”

Robertson says of the response to the ‘Quilters Call to Action’: “Everybody I’ve talked to has no direct personal connection to this tragedy, but everybody empathizes and feels that connection and we all want to help.”

“The call was for 200 quilts,” she says. “But I think - just from the initial response there will be more quilts that make their way to Humboldt than that. But they will find a home, because there’s always a place for a quilt.”

“Hopefully, the outpouring of love will help the community on their journey of healing.”

Quilters Call to Action: Quilts for Broncos On Friday, April 6, the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team was on their way to a playoff game when their team bus was in a collision with a semi-truck trailer in rural Saskatchewan. The incident and aftermath has rocked our province and communities

across Canada.

Some say that there are six degrees of separation that connect every person in the world. I think it’s safe to say that in Saskatchewan, we are connected by one degree of separation. We are a province in shock and mourning.

As quilters and makers we are able to show love and appreciation by pouring our hearts and souls into handmade items. These items are meant to show love, give comfort, and are a tangible reminder that we care.

The local quilters of Humboldt and Melfort will be making a player’s quilt for each of the 29 players/staff or families of players/staff that were on the bus.

The Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild is honoured to support Humboldt’s local quilt store Haus of Stitches and Prairie Patchwork Quilt Guild in making ‘Quilts for Broncos.’

The call for quilts comes for others impacted by the events, including: billet families, first responders, EMT, RCMP, Fire, Broncos staff/board members and others impacted in the communities of Humboldt and Tisdale.

The current estimate is that they will need 200 quilts. Quilters are encouraged to make blocks, quilt tops or finished quilts.

The Town of Carlyle and the Carlyle Chamber of Commerce hosted a pancake breakfast on Saturday, April 14, to raise funds for STARS and the SJHL Assistance Program. The pancakes were courtesy Parrish & Heimbecker Ltd. of Langbank, the sausages from Food World, and other supplies from PureChem. For $5 per person people ate for a cause as $3,152 was raised: $1,576 will go to STARS and $1,576 to SJHL Assistance Program respectively. The Arcola Library was also present where they were selling Humboldt Strong buttons to help raise funds: pictured here are Shauna Daku and Kim Wagner with the buttons. “We’ve made 2,100 so far and are prepared to make more as long as people are wanting them. Moms & Minor Hockey ‘Chase the Ace’ to fundraise in Carlyle Lynne Bell

The newly-formed ‘Moms on a Community Mission’ and Carlyle Minor Hockey have joined fundraising forces for their respective causes in the form on an ongoing ‘Chase the Ace’ fundraiser which will begin Satur-

day, April 21 at the Carlyle Sports Arena and conclude Saturday, Oct. 27.

Tara Cure, Jennifer Deimuth, Britainey Vandewoestyne, Bobbie Dee and Nicole Currie will use half of the money raised to purchase safe, updated

outdoor play structures at Carlyle Elementary School, while the Carlyle Minor Hockey Association will use their 50 percent of the profits to benefit local minor hockey programs.

“Our first ‘Chase the Ace’ will take place Saturday, April 21 at the Carlyle Sports Arena,” says Cure.

“Ticket sales start at 5;30

p.m. and run until 7:30 p.m. The draw takes place shortly after and you must be present to win if your name is drawn.”

Raffle tickets are $2 each and a book of ten tickets is $20.

The purchaser of each night’s winning ticket gets a chance to draw the ace of spades from a deck of cards. If the the ace is drawn, the pot of cash is paid out. If the ticket purchaser doesn’t draw the ace, they will still receive a percentage of the even-

ing’s cash – and the remaining funds are rolled over to be added to the next week’s draw.

“We’re still planning, but we’ll have company sponsors for door prizes and local groups will be hosting the kitchen each week, so anyone who comes out will also be supporting them, too,” says Cure. “There’s the potential for different organizations to serve themed meals and snacks or whatever they want.”

“It’ll be a weekly thing,

except for a few exceptions like grad,” explains Cure.

“And people can check out our Facebook page: ‘Moms on a Community Mission’ for updates.”

“It’s a family-friendly event and we welcome and encourage everyone to come out,” adds Cure.

“Have a good time, hang out with friends and support organizations in your community.”

What is a protest vote?

A couple of weeks ago I received a phone call regarding my column in which I stated I sometimes choose not to vote.

The caller was simply letting me know that there’s a way to vote in which you can “decline your ballot,” also known as a protest vote. Essentially by doKelly Running ing it, you’re saying that you’re Observer Staff not happy with any of the individuals/parties running, but instead choosing not to vote, it allows you to cast your ballot. Thus, you get are an engaged citizen, but if you’re not happy with your choices it is a way to record that.

In Saskatchewan this is made law through The Elections Act, 1996, under section 80, subsection 3: “If a voter has returned the ballot paper, declining to vote, the deputy returning officer shall immediately write the word ‘declined’ on the ballot paper and shall preserve it to be returned to the returning officer.”

I really like this option and it’s one that I didn’t know we had. It allows you to exercise your right to vote, being counted as someone that’s gone to the polling station, but it does allow you to voice that you’re unhappy with the choices presented to you.

You’re not one of those statistics that they talk about low voter turn-out and was it because people simply didn’t go and vote or was it a protest vote? They also are not spoiled ballots that are just tossed out. They are counted and that information is good information for parties running for government to have. It shows them a better sense of the communities they’re serving.

However, it does seem odd to me that with polls being so secretive that you have to make this show in public as it were by either saying, “I decline,” or by handing the empty ballot back to the deputy returning officer… it would almost make more sense to have a “None of the above” option.

Upon further investigation, however, federally this isn’t law. In fact, across Canada only Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta provincially allow you to “decline your ballot” in this fashion.

Interestingly Russia used to have something similar and in 2004 President Putin had 70 percent voter support, while their option of “Against All” took second place in the standings! In 2006 Russia abolished this option, but it’s quite the interesting statement that a society can make.

In an article from the Ottawa Citizen in 2015, then NDP Democratic reform critic Craig Scott, was quoted as saying, “It clearly is a mechanism for combining a message of being an engaged citizen (willing to come out to vote) while also saying no candidate, and/or their party, has the citizen’s support in a particular election.”

Over 30 years ago two private members’ bills had attempted to garner the support to pass the ability to “decline your ballot,” but neither of them were passed.

I understand it’s not a priority… but I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing that option on a ballot.

A laughing matter My sister and I were sitting beside each other during a church service when it happened…we got a severe case of the giggles. Something occurred which struck both of us as humorous. It was a little thing that would only have been funny to us. Had it been anyone else sitting there we would have My Outlook just carried on. But since we have a shared history and a vault of Shelley Luedtke memories in common, we found humour in something that no one else would have. We started to laugh…and had a terrible time trying to stop. The harder we tried to get serious again the funnier the situation seemed.

Fortunately we were at the back of the church so no one would have noticed our desperate attempt to compose ourselves but the mere thought of that moment can still bring a smile to my face.

According to a Psychology Today study, a 4-year old laughs about 300 times each day. By contrast, a 40-year old laughs about four times a day. Just four.

When did we forget how to laugh? When did we stop seeing humour and joy in the everyday things of life?

When did we get so serious?

One evening when I wasn’t feeling the best I crawled under some warm blankets and turned the TV on. As I searched for something to watch I came across a comedy marathon that grabbed my attention. For the next couple of hours I laughed and relaxed. Whether it was the rest or the laughter, I know I felt better at the end of the evening.

There is much research to suggest that it was the humour that helped me feel better. It isn’t just an old adage that “laughter is the best medicine.” Laughter relaxes our muscles, boosts our immune system, releases endorphins, improves cardiovascular health, eases anxiety, improves our mood, helps defuse conflict and adds joy to life.

April is National Humour Month. This has

received official proclamation in Canada, United States, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Great Britain. These nations are taking laughing seriously--and want to encourage its citizens to join in on the fun and increase their laugh quota. Suggestions include a joke-of-theday, team building exercises at work focusing on laughter, things to do with your families, shows to watch, books to read, and cheerful posters and graphics to place around your workspace or on your computer. The intent is to create smiles and laughter, which in turn creates happier, more optimistic individuals.

When nominations for acting awards are announced there is a debate that asks the question, “Which is tougher: drama or comedy?” Which actor is more deserving of accolades--the one that makes us cry or the one that makes us laugh? I thoroughly enjoy both types of performances but I can say for sure that we would be in a sad state of affairs if the laughter stops.

We’re often told we need to drink more water, eat more vegetables, exercise more and get more sleep. Perhaps we need to add another to the list-we need to laugh more. We need to join in the fun and frivolity that is a part of life because it is the moments of levity that help equip us for the heavier moments of stress and strain. We need to know what it means to laugh to comprehend its contrast of sadness and we need to know what it means to cry to fully understand the feeling of joy.

One of the best things about laughter is that it has no negative side effects--except maybe some sore stomach muscles from big belly laughs but that is far more fun than from a set of stomach crunches! Humour can have some seriously good consequences. We may not be able to keep up to a laughing 4-year old, but perhaps we can find ways to more closely match-up our laugh quotient to our age. So enjoy some laughter today. That’s my outlook.

Getting a tax refund? Spend it or not?

If you are entitled to a tax refund this year, you need to decide what you should do with it. Sure, you could spend it – but then it’s gone. Here are six alternatives with longer term benefits for your financial future.

1. Immediately use your refund to make your 2018 Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contribution and you’ll get the benefit of nearly an extra year of potential long-term tax-deferred growth plus a tax deduction against your 2018 income.

2. Contribute to investments held in a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA).

Your TFSA contribution room was increased by $5,500 as of January 1, 2018. Your contributions are not tax-deductible but you will not be taxed on the income generated by the investments in your TFSA, you can make taxfree withdrawals for any purpose at any time, and you can re-contribute any of those withdrawals in a

future year.

3. Invest it. If your RRSP and TFSA are topped up, consider adding your refund to your non-registered investments. A taxefficient strategy is to hold stocks and equity based mutual funds outside a RRSP or TFSA because dispositions of these types of investments are taxed using a more favourable capital gain income inclusion rate plus dividends from many Canadian corporations are eligible for the dividend tax credit.

4. Pay for your kids’ education. Set up Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs) to fund their future post-secondary education costs. Contributions to investments within a RESP are not tax-deductible but their growth is tax-deferred and they may qualify for Canadian Education Savings Grants (CESG)1 of up to 20% of the first $2,500 or $5,000 you contribute each year. family income, you could receive an extra 10-20% of Additional CESG on the first $500 you save in your child’s RESP each year.

5. Pay down costly, high-interest credit card debt and then pay down non-deductible debt such as your mortgage – a single prepayment could potentially save hundreds, even thousands of dollars in interest payments.

6. If your refund is large, consider parking that cash in a short-term investment that you can access without penalty. That way, you’ll have a ready source of money for a rainy day or a larger purchase – a new car? – without having to borrow or use credit. (A TFSA is also a good rainy day fund.)

Tax refunds are nice … but not as nice as enhancing your personal long term financial growth.

Carlyle Cardinals inducted into Sask Baseball Hall of Fame The Carlyle Cardinals Baseball Team, Carlyle, Saskatchewan will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, Team Category, Saturday, August 18, 2018, in Battleford, Saskatchewan.

As reported in the Carlyle Herald in 1902, baseball was first recorded in Carlyle in 1902. The team name, the Carlyle Lakers, participated in various leagues including the Moose Mountain League during the 1930s. A story from 1915 states the team travelled all night through wet and muddy conditions and made it on time to compete at 10 o’clock in the morning.

Baseball in Carlyle ceased during WWI and WWII as few men remained in the area for a ball team, but, in 1948 and continuing through 1979, baseball was again providing great baseball to the fans all around the area.

Some of the highlights of that era include: 1959- First recording of a double header baseball game.

1959- Hosted an International Baseball Tournament.

1963- Hosted a game between Carlyle and Satchel Paige and his All Stars.

1971- League Champions.

1974- League Champions advancing to the Provincial playoffs.

In 1981, Carlyle entered the South East Saskatchewan League under the name Carlyle Astros, with two [2] teams from Carlyle entering the 1983 season.

The Astros continued as a team until the late 1980s where their home games were played in Carlyle at Lions Park. The current Carlyle Cardinals baseball team was formed in 1993 and currently playing in the ten [10] team Saskota Baseball League, with the most successful years being from 1997 to the present.

Alberta shut out of Stanley Cup fun

There’s no joy in Cowtown this spring as the Stanley Cup playoffs unfold all across North America. As for the City of Champions where the Oilers play?

That’s a title right out of Comedy Central.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way in Alberta.

No playoff hockey this spring. And prospects are dim for much of a different story next year.

So what happened?

Calgary Flames made the playoffs last year and even though they went out in the first round against Anaheim Ducks, coach Glen Gulutzan and general manager Brad Treliving did nothing but strengthen the roster in the off-season, adding goalie Mike Smith, getting long in the tooth at 36, and defenceman Travis Harmonic, among others.

Sophomore Matthew Tkachuk nearly doubled his goal output, scoring 24 after a 13-goal rookie season.

In Edmonton, Oilers fans were proclaiming their club as a team of the future after a decade languishing in the lower depths of the league and building a supposed powerhouse with a raft of high firstround draft picks. 101 former junior players take part in benefit game in Moosomin

A total of 101 former and current junior hockey players stepped on the Moosomin Communiplex ice for a benefit hockey game on Friday, April 13.

Local former junior hockey players participated in the event which included a BBQ, moment of silence and memorial tribute on the ice, and finally the big game.

The response of a province, country, and world has been positive in the face of an unfathomable event where 16 individuals lost their lives. On Friday, April 13, 101 former junior hockey players came together, representing over 30 junior hockey teams, as they played in front of approximately 2,000 people.

First annual Kisbey Dinner Theatre a success Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Kisbey Fire Deparment, Elks, and Rebekahs came together to host their first annual dinner theatre on Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14.

The cast and crew included individuals from Kisbey, Arcola, and Lampman: Auldene Craig (Trudy), Steph Ernst (Gwen), Patti Baumgartner (Jessica), Sherri Swim (Sheryl), Wytt Hall (Dennis), Amber Evans (Kate), Michael Wyatt (Pete), Trinity Curtis (stage hand), Kayla McLaren (Prompter), Doug Curtis (director/ set design), Bob Curtis (prompter), Grant Bueckert (lights/sound), John Voutour (set design/lights), and the MC for the evening was Paul Cameron.

Amber Evans explained, “This is our first time doing this and we’re hoping to make it an annual event.”

“The three different organizations putting it on all work well together and everyone is helping out.”

Through ticket sales alone, Evans says that they were able to raise nearly $10,000, while a definite figure after calculating costs and sales was not available at press time.

“We sold 120 tickets last night [Friday] and are sold out tonight with 150 tickets.”

“We couldn’t have done this without our volunteers, also Cindy and Rylan Weir are our caterers and the food was amazing!”

The dinner theatre was originally planned, however, as a way to bring people together to recognize members of the volunteer fire department for their service, but to also present four individuals with the Saskatchewan Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal. This honour was awarded to Bob Curtis, John Voutour, Kalvin Nankivell, and Doug Curtis.

Visiting was Saskatchewan Volunteer Fire Fighter Association (SVFFA) Zone 3 Director, Dwayne Stone of Grenfell, who presented these awards.

The service of Grant Bueckert, Mike Wyatt, Wytt Hall, Bob Curtis, John Voutour, Kalvin Nankivell, Cole Wright, Robert Wright, Jim Johnston, and Doug Curtis were also recognized for their years of service as volunteer fire fighters.

“There are 14 members on the Kisbey Fire Department,” Stone stated. “It is a large commitment and to volunteer to do a job that can seriously injure or kill you is quite something. There is 164 years of fire fighting experience from volunteers who have been here for months to 45 years.”

“The best thing an old fire fighter can teach you is how to become an old fire fighter.”

The Happy Nun Café to host STARS fundraiser in memory of Humboldt Broncos Kelly Running Observer Staff

In an effort to honour and remember those lost in the Humboldt Broncos bus collision, the Happy Nun Café has partnered with Stoughton Central School and the Big Six League to host a fundraiser.

Gayla Gilbertson, owner of the Happy Nun Café, explained, “We will be hosting a fundraiser on May 5 at the Happy Nun in Memoriam of the Humboldt Broncos with all proceeds going to STARS Air Ambulance.”

Tickets for the fundraiser were set at $100 each, with 100 percent of proceeds to go to STARS. There are a limited number left available.

“Brad Johner and the Johner Boys are donating their time as the entertainment for the evening and all food is being covered by suppliers,” Gilbertson stated. “Servers for the evening will be members of Big Six Hockey teams, Stoughton Central School students, and Happy Nun employees who are also all donating their time.”

There will be an appearance by Highway 13 and dinner will include a delicious prime rib meal, while drinks will be for sale at $5 each with all proceeds going to STARS as well.

Efforts from Stoughton Central School were rallied together by the graduating class in support of a classmate who plays for the Humboldt Broncos, but was not on the bus that fateful Friday. Thinking of him and wanting to do something to show their support they were able to partner with Gilbertson at the Happy Nun Café.

Additionally, Gilbertson is hosting an auction, which will begin with items being posted online to the Happy Nun Café’s Facebook page. It will then turn into a live auction that evening with an auctioneer (who has also volunteered their services) who

will start the bids off from the highest bid online. It will also be Live Streamed that evening, so those unable to attend the event are still able to participate in the auction.

A special auction item will be available that night as well for Big Six Hockey fans: teams are donating jerseys with “Broncos” in place of the nameplate on the back.

“STARS will provide tax receipts for all auction items donated,” Gilbertson explained. “And we’re hoping to start the online auction right away, we will post them as we receive them.”

“I’ve had a very positive response from everyone so far,” she added. “The Big Six hockey organizations were offering their whole teams to help that night and STARS is very appreciative.”

“First Responders are often over looked and we need to remember they’re not having good days either.”

“It’s a tragic event… but if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be Canadian or to live in Saskatchewan, this is it, this is who we are. The response everyone has had to this tragedy, that’s what makes you Canadian.”

My apologies to the Poulsen family, I made an error in the announcement of Laura Poulsen death. She passed away at the long-term care home in Rimbey, AB (not at Ponoka as reported). She was at the age of 88 years. There will be a graveside service held at Dannevirke Cemetery this coming summer.

The Alida community extends their sincerest sympathy to Toby and Bernadine Boulet on the accidental death of their son, Logan on April 7, 2018. Logan was in the Humbolt Broncos bus accident near Tisdale on Friday, April 6. He became a hero when it was noted that he had signed his donor card and with his family consent was able to save six other lives. He is the grandson of Roland and Angeline (Boutin) Boulet, who lived in Alida from 1950-1964 when the family moved to Olds, AB. A Celebration of Logan’s Life was held Saturday, April 14 at the Nicholas Sheran Ice Centre in Lethbridge AB. Condolences are extended to all of the Boulet and Boutin families. Those attending the funeral from Alida were Louis and Lucille Gervais, Charly and Maureen Boutin, Brenda and Pierre Boutin, Gille and Cheryl Boutin, Marcia Gervais, and her son Ryan from Calgary as he met them at Lethbridge.

The community also extends their sympathy to Jackie (Smith) Verity on the death of her mother Agnes Smith (Storthoaks) who passed away April 8, 2018 at the Galloway Health Centre. Jackie had taught school here in Alida for a year before she transferred to Carnduff and continues to teach school there. Condolences are also extended to all other family members and friends.

On Friday, April 13 the Boettcher families and many friends from Alida and area attended the funeral service of Laurie Boettcher at Oxbow Lutheran Church, internment was held in Estevan.

Murray Cowan (Estevan) spent a couple days (April 13-14) at the Cowan farm visiting with his parents, Gray and Edel, and also visited his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley.

On Friday, April 13 eight brightly dressed and handsome jockeys attended the Ladies Night Out at the Glen Ewen Complex. The theme for the evening was “At the Derby”. The jockeys from Alida were Shelly Cowan, Margaret Peet, Lesa Bendtsen, Shanna Carriere, April Junk, Lynette Peet, Rozanne McClung and Cheryl Harrison.

When oh when are we really and truly going to have spring? The sun may be shining brightly and extra warm when coming through the window, but that wind is cold reminding us that winter temperatures are still hanging around.

Gee I sure hope that the weather forecast is correct in that the warm weather should arrive (and stay) after Thursday. I can hardly wait! Would sure like to see some warm April showers to bring those May flowers – getting cabin fever staying indoors. Although this week proved okay to be indoors as one could still watch curling on the telly – no mixed doubles as I was hoping for, but it was the Pinty’s Grand Slam most of the week with the finals on the weekend. Team Koe (Alberta) won the men’s final by defeating Team Edin (Sweden) and the ladies final was won by Team Sinclair (USA) who defeated Team Jones (Manitoba). Do believe that this is the last of the curling for this season. Now one can begin to get ready for the Football season, and of course the Baseball season has begun.

As you can see I’m a sports junkie.

Normal temperatures soon to come

By Calvin Daniels It is beginning to feel like 2018 may be the year of unending winter.

There is some hope in the forecast that on the Canadian Prairies at least we are inching closer to normal temperatures.

Of course normal in terms of temperature is basically an approximation which happens more years than not, so discounting extremes you sit somewhere in the middle of things. A meteorologist might have a different explanation, but in general terms normal temperatures are more guideline than expected occurrence.

But even when you factor that into things, this winter is hanging on rather more tenaciously than usual.

According to Saskatoon-based Saskatchewan Research Council climate researcher Virginia Wittrock, March was cold, something which anecdotally most of us are nodding in agreement with.

In a www.producer.com story Wittrock noted March had 20 days with average daily temperatures below the 30-year norm, based on data recorded between 1981 and 2010.

The first two weeks of April weren’t much better.

The naysayers will be suggesting the continued cold is showing global warming is a myth, but it more accurately supports that we are undergoing climate change more dramatic than any long term cycles would suggest as normal.

The immediate effect for agriculture on the Prairies will be to delay seeding, how long depending on what weather we experience over the next month.

But seeding will be delayed, along with a number of other activities.

The Fort Qu’Appelle Fish Culture Station is having to keep fish fry alive in tanks longer than normal because ice cover on lakes has delayed stocking.

And golf courses are going to have a shorter playing season simply because greens are going to have a late start in terms of being in play condition.

Farmers are going to have a smaller prime seeding window, and if the weather does not improve quickly it will force changes in crop choices, with moves to shorter season crops a must.

It all again reinforces how much of what we do relies on weather over which we have no control.

The sad events of the Humboldt Broncos bus collision of April 6, 2018, gave us an unprecedented challenge. The best among us groped for words.

Rev. Matteo Carboni of Humboldt said, “We remember the words of Jesus, who told us:

‘You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy’. We need each other to make this promise a reality.”

Saskatoon Bishop Mark Hagemoen offered a final blessing, “Lord God, you are the light that illumines the darkness,” he prayed.

“Continue to lead us into your light.”

Surely the Lord spoke through his ministers to take us out of the darkness and into the sunny green pasture of Psalm 23. The valley of death is an overwhelming reality at a time like this. But the Jesus who rose from the dead proclaims victory over death. Christ is the light of the world.

In a poem Sister Melanie Svoboda talks about pain and sorrow as the time “when smiles leave, songs are silenced and dance becomes impossible.” She explains that Jesus came to share our suffering and pain.

The fact that Jesus wept should console us.

The world of pain and suffering is our lot and we will need to face it.

We can cling to each other, Melanie said. Our social community is important. The Eucharist gives us bread for the journey, and daily pray-

er keeps us on intimate terms with Jesus.

The Sledge Hockey Event held last month was a great success! There were 16 teams from various points with over 100 players who participated over the weekend. Winning team consisted of Jayden Currie, Billy Easton, Trevor Stewart, Mac Niven, Jarred Valentine, Lucas Porter and Hunter Davies.

The over $10,000 raised was divided as follows, $4,700.00 to Stars, $4,700.00 to the Wawota Forum and $1,000.00 to the Avenger Sledge Hockey in Regina(who supplies the sleds).

What an awesome effort by Melanie Brimner and her team!!

Several young members of The Wawota Arts Appreciation Group enjoyed a 10 day trip to New York City.

These travellers were Kelton Ford, Billy Easton, Hanna Johnson, Sierra Murray, Anna Van Winkoop, Madison Wilson, Sarah Fahlman, Makalia Mansfield, Victoria Weatherald, Brianna De Roo and Anna McCarthy. They were accompanied by chaperons Rochelle Friesen, Jaime Finlay and

Neena Johnson.

Adam and Tina Czarnata, Jessie and Aiden travelled to Bancroft,ON to attend the funeral of Adam›s Mother, Laura Stephenson. She passed away at the age of 56 years. Sympathy to the family!

Sympathy also to the family and friends of Beatrice Kachuik who passed away April 7th in Arcola recently.

Formerly of Fairlight, she was a long time resident of DVL and was a few weeks short of her 79th birthday. Her funeral service was held in Regina last week. Family members include husband Arnold, Tracey, Mandy(Mowbray) Jamie and Melanie.

Over 60 guests travelled to Las Vegas to attend the wedding of Jolie Bunz and Aron Morton. Attendees were Jolie›s sons Rylan and Nathan, Aron›s children, Madison and Carter, Aron›s parents , a sister and a brother and their spouses, 8 co-workers and their spouses. Harold and Jane have returned home after spending several months in Arizona.

Bob and Kim Lamontagne spent several days on a holiday to Ontario. They visited Niagara Falls and other points .

The horrific bus crash with the Humboldt Broncos on board has taken over the news this past 2 weeks. It is great to see so many all trying to something to help out, whether it is financially or compassionately. We have learned that Therese Lamontagne›s great-nephew, Logan Boulet, age 21 years was killed in the crash. Sympathy to her and all of the family members and friends.

The Carlyle RCMP dealt with several calls from Thursday, April 5 to Thursday, April 12.

911 An individual was charged for misusing the 911 emergency phone number after two officers were sent to a home in the detachment area as the result of a request relayed via 911.

One call to 911 was the result of a four-yearold playing with a phone.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP members assisted local EMS with an injured and intoxicated individual.

Alcohol-related offences Carlyle RCMP responded to a call in which intoxicated individuals had damaged property at a residence. Constable Steven Sharpen says: “If you’re drunk, just get home safely and don’t cause problems. So many of these incidents escalate when alcohol is involved.”

A driver received a roadside suspension for driving under the influence of alcohol after being initially stopped for speeding by police.

This motorist’s vehicle was also towed.

A minor was fined $360 and will appear in court regarding an offence under the Liquor Act. RCMP responded to a call reporting an impaired driver.

Assault After being called to an assault involving two adult siblings, police referred members of the family to local counsellors and suggested one family member contact Social Services.

Police are investigating an assault involving a male and a female. The male was arrested and lodged in cells. This person also has an outstanding warrant.

Collisions/Traffic violations The driver of a truck pulling a trailer was uninjured after his vehicle jack-knifed and landed in the ditch as the result of attempting to avoid a collision with a moose. This driver was uninjured, as airbags were deployed.

RCMP responded to a call from a concerned citizen who had narrowly avoided an accident with another driver. The caller was concerned that the other motorist had suffered an epileptic seizure while driving. Members located the driver concerned and found that this individual was driving without a licence. They continue to investigate.

An individual was charged with driving with undue care and attention.

An motorist will appear in court for driving while disqualified. This motorist was stopped by police on Hwy 9 south, near Carlyle.

Members issued several speeding tickets throughout this period, with fines reaching $344.

Drivers from throughout the detachment area were fined or given warnings for not stopping at posted intersections. The fine for this offence is $230.

Several individuals were found to be operating uninsured motor vehicles. The fine for this offence is $580.

Drug offence RCMP discovered an individual selling illegal drugs when they responded to the report of a fight. This incident is still under investigation.

Firearm Amnesty Members picked up a firearm at an area residence at the request of the owner of the gun.

When police arrived, they found the gun and ammunition was not stored safely. Police remind gun owners to store their firearms safely.

Harassing communications RCMP spoke to three people regarding a situation involving unwanted text messages and unwelcome contact via social media. Constable Sharpen of the Carlyle detachment says: “If you’re receiving messages you don’t want, the first step is to block that person and remove them from your social media accounts, such as Facebook.”

Mental Health Act RCMP provided assistance to an individual under the Mental Health Act. Obstruction of justice Two individuals within the detachment area were warned as the result of repeated violations of a no-contact order.

Theft An individual was charged with shoplifting after stealing meat from a Carlyle grocery store with the intention of selling it. RCMP are still investigating.

The theft of a set of golf clubs from a shed was reported to RCMP. A break and enter from an area residence in which items were taken from a garage is still under investigation by RCMP. Trespassing Members responded to a report of trespassing at a facility in the Carlyle area. Police investigated and found a male had entered the property and was found to be doing his laundry. No charges were laid.

Uttering threats While responding to a 911 call from within the detachment area regarding threats being made via Facebook, members of the RCMP came upon intoxicated individuals and a possible assault.While attending to this matter, one member of the RCMP was attacked by a dog. No charges have been laid at this point, but this matter remains under investigation.

RCMP are investigating threats made by an individual in which this person repeatedly threatened another individual’s person and property.

Warrants Carlyle RCMP issued warrants to several individuals for failing to attend court.

Well-being check Members conducted one well-being check within the detachment area during this period.

Carievale 4-H Beef hosts District #41 bowling The Carievale 4-H Beef Club hosted the District #41 bowling on April 14, 2018 at the Carnduff Bowling Alley. There were bowlers from all seven clubs in the district – Alida Beef, Alameda Beef, Carnduff Beef, Carievale Beef, Glen Ewen Mixed, Glen Ewen Trailblazers, and Redvers Wranglers. Wawota Museum holds their 2018 Annual Meeting Wawota & District Museum held their Annual Meeting on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. The minutes of the September 25, 2017 meeting and the Financial Statement were adopted as presented. Correspondence was read.

Old Business: Activities and record keeping over the winter months was discussed. A report on the Christmas Tea and Bake Sale was presented showing that attendance and funds raised were down from the previous year. Santa Surprise raffle (2 boxes full of Christmas gifts) was very successful, raising $743 and winners were Marj Davis and Irene Dorrance. Attendance figures – tourists were down from previous year but local attendance was higher. Donations from the Mountney Club, Lions Club and Kipling McMillans Motors Products were acknowledged with thanks and also grants from Sask Culture, Sask Heritage, Recreation Board (facilities, lotteries and special projects) and Town of Wawota.

GST Rebate has been received. We also acknowledged the great work regarding the museum that Kristine Duff has put on the Town of Wawota web page. We continue to work on getting all the cataloguing of artefacts on the museum’s software program – a very long time-consuming project (from 1980 to date).

Wawota Museum hosted the Parkland Network meeting in October and one committee member attended a workshop in Whitewood – also members will be attending a Parkland Network meeting in Spy Hill in late April.

New Business: We have applied for the Sask Culture Museums Grant and the Recreation Board Grants and have submitted the required followup information. The Charities Income Tax form has been submitted. Some repairs to the exterior siding of the main museum building will have to be completed in the spring and spring cleaning of all the museum buildings will need to be done. We discussed hiring a summer student, working with the town, and getting more volunteers to help at the museum, also someone to assist with the computer work needed. Representatives of the museum committee will be attending the April Town council meeting to discuss the future of the museum if more help is not forthcoming.

Summer plans discussed included programs and displays that will be featured. We hope to involve more young people/children in the museum with summer programs during July and August. Museum involvement in the Wawota Heritage/Ranch Rodeo plans were outlined. Some ideas for Culture Days in September were brought forward. We will be approaching the school about having some student tours, hopefully in May or early June. The Annual Spring Tea and Bake Sale and grocery hamper raffle was discussed with the date being Friday, May 25th and we talked about some new ideas for this tea. The Museum has some antique baby bottles (duplicates) that were found in the old Wawota drugstore many years ago and these are available for sale if anyone is interested - $5 per bottle.
