Remembering what the prairies were built on: Old Tyme Harvest at Wawota Kelly Running Observer Staff

Ken and Kevin Wilson along with family and friends hosted a second annual Old Tyme Harvest event on Saturday, Sept. 2. Earlier in the day they used antique combines, while that afternoon they swathed/ binded and threshed bundles of wheat.

Fundraising for benches

Southern Plains Co-op employees hosted a BBQ on Wednesday, Aug. 30, as a way to fundraise for a new project. “We’re looking to raise money for benches to be distributed amongst the communities we serve,” Debbie Jack explained. “The more money we raise the more places we can give benches to.” The first bench will be going to the Arcola Daycare, but the group from across all Southern Plains Co-ops are excited to be able to continue raising money to be able to give back to the communities they serve. “We’re hoping to do a BBQ next month and we have a lot of other ideas coming up including a special project to start up once the kids go back to school, which they’ll really like.”

The Branding Group within the Southern Plains Coop – including employees from Estevan, Oxbow, and Carlyle locations – are fundraising to donate benches to different communities that support the Southern Plains Co-op. The first bench will be going to Arcola Daycare, but with the more funds raised the more communities the group will be able to donate benches within.

Saskatchewan is a province built on agriculture and is nicknamed “Canada’s breadbasket.” Over time the technologies related to agriculture have evolved, but at Ken and Kevin Wilson’s farm south of Wawota, a demonstration day was held to showcase the agricultural history of Saskatchewan with an antique combine harvest and a threshing machine demonstration on Saturday, Sept. 2.

The threshing machine is widely thought to be a key advancement in agriculture, which allowed for large scale farming on the prairies. Although it was quite labour intensive – and many people made their living on threshing crews – it allowed for larger amounts of grain to be harvested at one time than ever before. While the introduction of the first combines furthered this advancement because farmers no longer had to swath, pick up, and thresh in separate stages; they could simply straight cut their wheat crops. This mechanization and advancement in agricultural practices are directly tied to the booming grain economy on the prairies.

Ken Wilson, his son Kevin Wilson, and his grandson Colton Wilson are all passionate about antique farm equipment – having started restoring antique tractors and eventually came across a 1962 Massey-Ferguson combine in 2010.

The demonstration day involved an antique combine harvest at 11 a.m., while the threshing machine demonstration was held at 2 p.m.

Kevin Wilson has explained before to The Observer that “For farm days like these the thresher is usually the star of the show, but the binder is actually the unsung hero because it’s work is usually done prior to the event and the binder is usually just sitting there having done its behind the scenes work.”

“The binder creates the sheaves that can then be pitched into the thresher, so we were excited for people to see that.”

The bundles were taken straight from the field to the threshing machine, hauled by an antique tractor and grain cart. Included in the machines working hard to showcase how work was once done on the farm included the 1917 20-40 Case tractor and the 1928 Red River Special threshing machine – which Ken and Colton took to Austin, MB, last year, for the world record setting thresher day there.

Raise the Rafters group from Wawota were there to sell food and drink throughout the day to the numerous people – a couple hundred – who were out to take in the demonstration. From infants to individuals in their 90s, it was a day to celebrate the past and remember how things have evolved over time to what we now have – including tractors and combines with cabs and air conditioning.

In addition to the demonstrations there were also antique tractors and other equipment on display – some functional and others not.

The idea behind the event, which enjoyed a second successful year, developed when Ken and Colton returned from Austin, MB, last year – seeing more than 150 threshing outfits operating at once – they realized that those efforts had spawned interest from friends, family, and neighbours; so, they decided to test out the event last year and following its success were committed to continuing it into the future.

Prairie Sky Kitchens opens in Carlyle Kelly Running Observer Staff

Prairie Sky Kitchens celebrated with the community of Carlyle and surrounding area on Wednesday, Aug. 30, with a ribbon cutting, cake, coffee, and numerous door prizes.

“We’re overwhelmed with how great the community has been,” Twyla Senchuk, General Manager, explained. “Carlyle is a nice nucleus to serve the surrounding area.”

This location is the second that Prairie Sky has opened, the first having serviced Estevan and area for many years.

Two years ago, Senchuk stated that the company was bought by current owner, Joe Billesberger. Billesberger also owns B&S Construction.

“When we were looking to expand, Carlyle made sense,” Billesberger said. “We had lots of people coming down from this area, and we realized there was a little bit of a gap in the market with people having to drive for their renovation needs, so this made sense to us.”

“We are a one stop shop and can do full renovations start to finish,” Senchuk added.

“We also work alongside plumbers and electri-

cians to be able to offer full renovations. So, we offer full installation and great service, and if someone wants to do it themselves we are happy to answer any questions throughout the process.

We’re one call away and if they’re stuck on something, we can help.”

We’re not a revolving door, we make long term relationships here and there’s very little staff turnaround, which says something about the company, but you’re also getting lots of experience when you come to us.”

The Carlyle PlaySchool Cooperative is moving to a new location and parents of three- and four-year-old prospective students are invited to an open house and registration night, Thursday, Sept. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at the play school’s new location - the Cornerstone Family and Youth premises, which are located near the rear of the Carlyle Civic Centre and can be most easily accessed by using the walkway between the Civic Centre and Carter’s Family Restaurant on Main Street.

Carlyle Play-School Cooperative President Dawn Faber says: “The first day of class is Tuesday, Sept. 19. Three- and four-year-olds are welcome to attend.”

Rough ‘N Ready Rodeo brings the action in Stoughton Kelly Running Observer Staff

The community of Stoughton enjoyed the sixth annual Rough ‘N Ready Roughstock Rodeo hosted by the New Hope Horse Club on Saturday, Sept. 2.

The event got underway at 6 p.m. on the Stoughton Fairgrounds and again drew a large crowd to enjoy the “toughest sport on dirt.”

Hosted by the New Hope Horse Club, the support of the community is paramount and president of the NHHC took time at the beginning of the evening to thank sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who came out. Over the past six years together they have ensured the longevity of an entertaining evening, but have also upgraded the rodeo grounds including the addition of the lights.

Livestock throughout the years has been provided by local con-

tractor, Prime Time Rodeo, courtesy Jim Lawrence and family from Kennedy. The roughstock are all bred to buck and enjoy the arena where they can put on a performance, it’s what they live for, and every year the Lawrence family delivers.

The pickup men in the corral were Blade Young and Kevin Smith, who ensured the safety of the cowboys participating and cleared the arena after each run by lassoing and leading the animals out of the performance area.

Dean Glencross worked tirelessly as the bull fighter in the arena to ensure the safety of riders as he gets their attention focused on him rather than on the fallen cowboy.

O’Canada was performed by a mother and daughter from Stoughton – Jacquie and Micah Walbaum. Together they harmonized beautifully as the rodeo flags were

brought in by Stephanie Zoer, Lisa Mitchell, Halle Balon, and Krista Cieckiewicz.

Events hosted during the rodeo included Bareback, Saddlebronc, Barrel Racing, Mutton Bustin’, Wild Horse Races, and Bull Riding.

The cabaret was rocking with Rob McLane and Against the Grain performing on the rodeo grounds under the big tent.

Results: Bareback – Brady Bertram (74 points), Clayton Strut (66 points), and Casey Bear (58 points).

Saddlebronc – Tyler Winters (76 points), Tim Costello (74 points), Mike Gordon and Colt Smith (71 points each).

Bull riding – Tyson Salmon (83 points).

Barrel racing – Jamie Balon (15.8 seconds).

Wild Horse Racing – Mike Wyatt, Tyce Whyte, and Rylie Shane earned first place.

Manor back to school BBQ Kelly Running Observer Staff

Eilysh Kirkpatrick will be the K, one, and two teacher this year at Manor School, while Melissa Barsi is the new principal.

Manor School celebrated heading back to school with a BBQ on Wednesday, Aug. 30. Students were welcomed to meet teachers, check out classrooms, bring school supplies, and enjoy a BBQ – sponsored by local businesses and the School Community Council.

In regards to meeting the teachers, this included two new individuals at the Manor School. Melissa Barsi is joining the staff with 17 years experience and is looking forward to her first year as principal. Barsi is originally from Kennedy, SK, and found her way back to the area with her hus-

band, an RCMP officer, who was posted locally.

Last year Barsi worked in Wawota, but is excited for her new endeavour: “It will be a new experience for me and I’m excited to learn the role of principal; but, I’m very much looking forward to meeting the students.”

While at Wawota, Barsi was joined by Eilysh Kirkpatrick, who is teaching the Kindergarten, grade one and

grade two multi-classroom. Kirkpatrick is originally from Lafleche, saying she enjoys the small town atmosphere of community.

“I grew up in a similar town,” Kirkpatrick said.

She is entering her second year of teaching and is especially looking forward to working with the staff in Manor, but is also excited to meet the students and begin the school year.

The program is available to any Town of Carlyle recreation or cultural organization who is interested in obtaining funding for capital projects. The program consists of two components, an annual limited matching grant and a larger long term matching grant.

Application deadlines are March 31st and September 30th of every year. Funding is limited and applications will be reviewed by the Recreation and Culture Foundation.

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls between Friday, Aug. 26 to Thursday, Aug. 31.

One file resulted in the following charges under the Criminal Code of Canada being laid by Carlyle RCMP: A 53-year-old male has been charged with three offences:

1) Fraud not exceeding $500 2) Possession of property obtained by crime 3) Uttering a forged document This individual’s court date is set for October in Carlyle Provincial Court.

It is alleged this individual came to a business agreement with an elderly resident in Wawota, Sask. to reseal his driveway. After the job was completed, it is alleged that this man altered the payment agreement, without the victim’s knowledge, to a much higher sum.

He then attended the Wawota Credit Union where he immediately cashed the cheque for the increased amount.

Cpl. James Barnett of the Carlyle detachment says: “We urge members of the public to be aware of these scams that often target elderly or otherwise vulnerable people.”

“If you have any questions concerning entering into any business agreement of this type, please contact the RCMP before doing so.”

The average age of people living in our military retirement community is 85. Recently, a neighbor turned 100, and a big birthday party was thrown. Even his son turned up.

“How old are you?” a tenant asked.

“I’m 81 years old,” he answered.

The tenant shook her head. “They sure grow up fast, don’t they?”

Two vehicle collision At approximately 7:00 p.m. September 2, 2017 Carlyle RCMP responded to a serious two vehicle collision on Highway # 13 near Carlyle, Saskatchewan.

A pickup truck and a motorcycle collided in the west bound lane of Highway # 13.

The three adult occupants of the pickup truck were uninjured in the collision. The 75-year-old female driv-

er of the motorcycle was transported to hospital in Regina. The female passed away from her injuries the following morning – we will not be releasing her name.

Detours were in place for six hours during the on-scene investigation, the roadway is now clear. An RCMP Collision Reconstructionist and Carlyle RCMP continue to investigate.

Drugs In Arcola, RCMP members charged an individual with possession of a controlled substance, believed to be cocaine. This individual also had several warrants.

Fraud Police investigated two incidences of fraud during this period.

Mental Health Act RCMP dealt with files inder the Mental Health Act this week.

One investigation is ongoing.

Mischief Members responded to seven reports of mischief during this period. Four files were

cleared. Three reports involve: an intoxicated individual found in a residence which was not their own during the early morning and an individual who punched a window and broke it at a residence under construction, both within the Carlyle area. In Arcola, an individual threw dog waste into their neighbour’s yard.

Traffic offences RCMP issued a warning to a motorist who was driving with undue care and attention on Hwy #13 near Arcola.

RCMP issued 14 speeding tickets, four fines (at $580 each) for vehicle insurance violations, two-intersectionrelated fines (at $230 each) and two seatbelt tickets.

Members also issued five inspection tickets.

The removal of statues

Sir John A. Macdonald is considered the founding father of Canada: he united Upper and Lower Canada along with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to consolidate into a single country and after doing that became the country’s first Prime Minister.

There is narrative currently focused on the removal of the statKelly Running ue considering his involvement Observer Staff in colonialism and residential schools. In Saskatchewan two groups, Colonialism No More and Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism, are looking to have the Macdonald statue – at Victoria Park – removed.

In Ontario the Elementary Teachers’ Federation passed a motion to “examine and rename schools and buildings named after Sir John A. Macdonald.”

The focus on the statue comes after the Charlottesville rally regarding the Confederate military leader Robert E. Lee. Although the protest in Regina is to remove a statue, while the one in Charlottesville was apparently – they had no pamphlets or information on saving the statue, so I don’t know if that’s necessarily their true reasons of being there – to protest its removal the same questions come to mind: why do we erect statues and what does it mean when they’re taken down?

Statues have been around for the past 30,000 years and were created by numerous cultures around the world. Years after they’re created they may cause discussion like the Moai – the Easter Island human figures, which when first discovered were thought to be heads, but upon excavation-included bodies.

Overtime it can be difficult to know exactly what a statue is meant to symbolize, but the statues that have been erected in the past 100 to 200 years are still quite well known.

Statues are built as an effigy to an influential person or to commemorate a historical event. In American history, General Lee, is quite a prominent figure as he fought for the South during the Civil War – a time when brother fought brother and families were divided based on what they believed was right. Looking at the battles he won, General Lee was a great military strategist until his surrender.

Paul McIntire, the man who commissioned the statue of General Lee in Charlottesville in the early 1900s also financed a George Clark statue who served in the American Revolutionary War, a “Stonewall” Jackson statue – another Confederate general, and a statue of Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea.

So, although the Civil War isn’t the most positive historical event, it is a major event of the United States and the statue marks this time period. More importantly than having a statue, is what the teachings are surrounding the statue.

This is similar in a sense to Macdonald as although there is controversy, it was a different time.

Today we are much more tolerant in society than what we once were. Colonialism was a part of the time period and there’s lots of countries/people that have done great things, but also have black marks if we attribute our current standards to them.

Although George Washington the first President of the United States is a forefather of the USA, he once owned slaves – and although in his will he left directions for the emancipation of his slaves, he was a slave owner.

Does that, a product of the time, mean that statues in his honour should also be removed?

I think statues should be left, they create discussion, and teachings surrounding the person or event can be fleshed out fully. They serve as a reminder of our history.

Heart of the Moose Mountains

The story behind the picture We were out in BC having a visit with my grandparents when the conversation turned to the topic of a picture that hung in their home for many years.

Since they were now in a condo I wondered if perhaps they had gotten rid of it as they downsized from their house. Grandma asked what was special about the picture and I told her that when I saw it I knew I was at grandpa and grandma’s house and it felt good. That’s when Grandma left the room, came back in and My Outlook handed me the picture. She told Shelley Luedtke me since it meant that much to me I should have it.

I was very touched--and very surprised; touched by her thoughtfulness--and surprised by the size of the picture. It was smaller than the one I held in my memory. As a little girl the image was impressed on me and loomed large as a part of my grandparent’s home.

The picture is very familiar and one that hung in a lot of our grandparents’ homes. It depicts an elderly man sitting at a table with hands folded as he prays over a very simple meal. The picture is called “Grace” and is one of the most reproduced pictures of the 20th century.

Its story began as a picture by photographer Eric Enstrom in a studio in Bovey, Minnesota, sometime between 1918 and 1920. The man in the picture is named Charles Wilden whose real life, according to some, bore little resemblance to the picture of devotion and reverence he became associated with. He was paid $5 for waiving his rights to the photograph and what happened to him after that is unknown.

In the 1940’s the photographer’s daughter Rhoda colourized the photograph by hand and it was this version that become widely reproduced.

Decades later its popularity endured. In 2002 it was named the official photograph of the Minnesota State Legislature and in 2014 a stage play called “Picturing Grace” debuted telling the story behind

the photo, the photographer and the subject. Enstrom later remarked, “I wanted to take a picture that would show people that even though they had to do without many things because of the war they still had much to be thankful for.”

In the 1960’s a companion picture became popular featuring a similar set up with a woman bowed in prayer. The woman is Myrtle Copple and the picture, taken by Jack Garren, was named “Gratitude.” The two pictures are often purchased and displayed together as “Grace and Gratitude.”

My grandfather died several years ago and my grandmother three years ago this summer. Following her passing it fell to my mother and her sisters to deal with their condo and its contents. As grandchildren we received phone calls asking if we wanted this item or that. Although I said yes to some pretty pairs of earrings, there was really nothing else that I felt I needed to have. It’s not that they didn’t have beautiful things--they did--but what I received from them was far greater than any of the stuff that could have come my way. Because what they left behind can’t be packed in a box or stuffed in a suitcase. Their legacy was the embodiment of the values I learned to hold most dear: faith, family, giving, graciousness, dedication, and doing for others.

I was doing some shopping on vacation looking for a unique item for a particular spot in my house.

At one point I wondered why I hadn’t thought about something from grandpa and grandma’s house but then quickly realized I already had the best thing possible. Yes, I have my cherished picture that grandma herself presented to me, but I have so much more than that. I have the story behind the picture--the story of my grandparents.

As Grandparents Day is marked on September 10 this year I will remember, with thankfulness, the best things they could have possibly passed along to their children and grandchildren. They were the most amazing examples of grace and gratitude. May I live in a way that the same can be said of me one day. That’s my outlook.

Food shopping can quickly take over your budget despite your best intentions. If you’re looking for ways to save money while enjoying nutritious and delicious meals, consider these money-saving tactics.

Stick to your budget to save time and money. Look at your food budget before making a trip to the store. If you don’t have one yet, figure out your overall budget including food costs with a simple budget worksheet. Knowing how much you want to spend and have actually spent in the past can help you make informed decisions.

Plan out the week’s meals

with your budget in mind.

If you make dishes that rely on the same staples, you can save money by using leftovers to create a new dish. But mix things up to avoid boredom.

Make your trip to the grocery store even easier with a shopping list. Sticking to a list can help limit food waste and make it easy to get in and out of the grocery store without impulse purchases.

If you share food shopping duties with a spouse, partner or roommate, you can avoid double purchases by using grocery apps that let you create and sync shopping lists.

Stack different discounts and deals to rack up savings. Once you enter the grocery store, it’s time to put your plan into action. Plan for the occasional indulgence and let yourself make impulse purchases occasionally, but try to stick to the list.

You can also often save money at grocery stores by joining the store’s loyalty program. Members get exclusive

discounts, and some programs offer additional savings at partner stores. Check your membership account online or with the app before checking out, as some programs have electronic coupons that you need to “clip” to get the savings.

One way to increase your grocery budget is to use one, or several, of the apps that give you cash back when you buy groceries. Sometimes you can even earn cash back on general purchases like a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk.

Depending on the app and food, you may need to verify the purchase by scanning the barcode and sending a picture of your receipt.

PET PREPARED Guide Dog Awareness Month

September is Guide Dog Awareness Month: CNIB spreading the word on rights and respect for guide dog pairs in Saskatchewan Saskatchewan – September 2017 is National Guide Dog Month. During this month CNIB will celebrate all guide dogs by sharing some simple-tofollow guide dog etiquette tips and raising awareness on the rights of guide dog users in Saskatchewan when accessing public spaces.

Guide dogs, which are specially bred and trained to provide mobility assistance to people who are blind or partially sighted, are more than just a tool – they are a partner in independence that can open up the world in a profoundly different way. A guide dog can instill greater confidence for guide dog users in exploring unfamiliar environments. But, in order to do that there needs to be a better understanding of the rights to access public spaces with a guide dog as well as knowledge of the etiquette associated with encountering a guide dog pair.

“I want people to realize that although my guide dog is cute he is busy working. Please ignore him. If you don’t you are endangering the handler,” said Shan Noyes, guide dog user and CNIB spokesperson.

Knowing the proper etiquette and following a few

simple “rules” will ensure appropriate social behaviours in the dogs and reduce the risk of dangerous situations for the guide dog pair.

• Harness on means hands off. A guide dog in harness means “Please don’t distract me. I’m working.” Sometimes if the dog is not “working” the user may decide to remove the harness and let you pet their dog. Always ask first.

• Don’t feed them. Especially when guide dogs are working in harness. Offering food to the dog can result in antisocial behaviours such as begging for food and scavenging off the ground.

• Contain your excitement. Don’t encourage excitable play in a guide dog. Guide dogs are given access to public places where other dogs are not permitted, so they must stay calm.

• Say “hello” another time. If you’re walking your pet dog and you approach a guide pair, take your dog away from the guide dog. A guide dog encounter with a pet dog can result in a challenging and sometimes dangerous distraction.

The rights of guide dog users go beyond asking whether or not you can interact with the dog.

Many blind and partially sighted Canadians still find themselves in challenging and frustrating situations when trying to access public spaces

such as cabs, restaurants and shopping establishments. In all of Canada’s 13 jurisdictions, human rights legislation prohibits discriminating against a person with a disability working with a service animal. Discrimination includes denial of access to any premises to which the public would normally have access, including tenancy right. Unfortunately, this is not well known.

“A number of times in restaurants and in cabs I have been denied access because I had my guide dog with me. I find this both frustrating and embarrassing that I still have to explain and negotiate my human right to access public spaces,” said Noyes.

CNIB launched its Guide Dog Program in April 2017.

The program’s focus is to train guide dogs to meet the needs of blind and partially sighted Canadians exclusively, with training philosophies that maximize success and a suite of supports to ensure every guide dog user has full enjoyment of their guide dog.

to explore your neighborhood stores, as one grocer may frequently have high-quality yet inexpensive produce while another might have a great butcher.

No matter where you shop, be mindful of how the store’s design can entice you to make purchases. The outside ring is often where you’ll find the fewest processed foods, however you might notice that you need to walk to the back of the store to grab milk or eggs. The store hopes you’ll be tempted by something you see along the way.

Sticking to your list, refraining from walking through an aisle unless you need to and remembering that the eye-level products aren’t necessarily the best bang for your buck can help you avoid these traps.

Stick to inexpensive foods.

Consider choosing store-brand rather than name-brand products as they’re often cheaper, but not necessarily lower quality. You may also want to consider changing what you buy. Filet mignon can be delicious, but so can cheaper cuts of meat and there’s a lot of advice online for how to best prepare them. Staples, such as rice, beans and canned or frozen goods are also a low-cost way to supplement meals.

Bottom line: Buying food is a necessity, but you don’t have to overspend to keep a well-stocked fridge and pantry. By planning your meals and grocery trips, using the money-saving tactics above and carefully choosing where you shop, you can save time and money – and cook up something delicious.

LPGA would love to clone Canada’s Henderson

She’s young, she’s attractive, she’s talented and she beams with enthusiasm. Canadian fans flock to her galleries when she plays in warmweather winter locales such as Palm Springs and Phoenix and help set attendance records when the LPGA comes to Canada.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize that the LPGA hierarchy loves Henderson, too.

The Smiths Falls, Ont. star, only 20 and already ranked 10th in the world, is regularly featured in TV promotions on The Golf Channel.

They’d love to be able to clone her.

Recently, a British company, Sports Pro, listed the world’s 50 most marketable athletes and Henderson showed up at No. 32, one of five Canadians on the list which included hockey superstar Connor McDavid at 15, sprinter Andre de Grasse at 23, and tennis stars Milos Raonic (31) and Eugenie Bouchard (47).

Women’s golf has loads of talent but unfortunately for North American sponsors, the vast majority of stars come from Asian countries. So-Yeon Ryu is No 1 in the world, a trivia answer that would stump

most sports fans in this part of the world. Lydia Ko, an English-speaking New Zealander of Korean descent, is a former No. 1 and regarded as a sweetheart who is good for Madison Avenue. But ask even an avid sports fan to have a deep conversation about superstars Ariya Jutanugarn, Inbee Park, Sung-Hyun Park or In Gee Chun and you’re likely to get more than a few blank stares.

So it’s a bit surprising to hear Julie Inkster, the captain of the U.S. Solheim Cup team, complain that women’s golf doesn’t get the proper respect, attention, financial rewards and TV exposure that it deserves.

Women players around the world are exciting to watch and play spectacular games, she said.

Laird – along with fellow committee members Jacqui Beckett, Holly Dauvin and Ken Frederickson organized a week-long retreat for artists at Kenosee Lake, culminating in a show and sale at Kenosee Hall Recreation Centre, Thursday, Aug. 31. Laid says of Jackson: “At our retreat, Larry gave an impromptu workshop on (painting) birch trees, which was amazing. He’s a great person and a lot of fun.”

2018 Old Farmer’s Almanac

By Calvin Daniels Every once in a while something rolls across the desk of a newspaper editor which is interesting and yet fun, and such was the case recently for me.

In this case it was the arrival of the 2018 edition of the Old Farmer’s Almanac Canadian Edition.

The book itself brought back a flood of memories for me.

The book was always in my grandparents’ home, and usually at our place as well.

I am not sure if the annual almanac was the more often read book in the family, the numbers likely skewing toward that honour going to the Sears and Eaton’s Christmas catalogues thanks to my daily thumbing through them for weeks leading up to Dec. 25, but the annual was certainly a ratty mess by year’s end from constant review.

The almanac is just one of those publications that is both quirky and insightful. It is part trivia, which is always fun, with just enough serious data to intrigue.

I suppose that is the reason the edition appear-

ing on my desk was the 226th in long history of the almanac. Let that sink in just a bit. We in Canada are celebrating the 150th anniversary of our country. The Old Farmer’s Almanac was being published for 76 years before Canada existed. It launched in 1792.

In the case of the review copy which arrived, I of course took it home to peruse.

In general terms the almanac has not changed significantly in its style from what I remember from my youth, a reality noted in the promotional material.

“The Old Farmer’s Almanac thrives because it stays true to its mission,” observes Editor Janice Stillman. “This almanac is a calendar, a time capsule of the year that aims to be of use to people of all walks of life, with information and insights that bear a pleasant degree of humour.

We promote country values and traditional ideals – farm, family and friends; home and hearth – because they are eternal and common to all.”

The key elements are still there, includ-

ing the Calendar of the Heavens. The book itself notes the calendar is “the heart of The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

They present sky sightings and astronomical data for the entire year and are what makes this book a true almanac, a “calendar of the heavens.” In essence, these pages are unchanged since 1792, when Robert B. Thomas published the first edition. The long columns of numbers and symbols reveal all of nature’s precision, rhythm and glory, providing an astronomical look at the year 2018.”

And then there are the weather forecasts for the coming year. In a world where a weather forecast made at 8 a.m., seems too often wrong by 5 p.m., a forecast months in advance might seem folly.

But we, especially as farmers, are drawn to weather forecasts like moths to a flame, so looking to the almanac predictions is just a natural thing to do.

The good news, the almanac suggests a generally mild, dry winter.

And next summer, well wet is the word for much of the Prairies.

to the Cowan farm on Aug. 22 for a visit, with hopes of helping with harvest but unfortunately there was no grain which was ready for combining. They did enjoy doing some time quad riding around the area.

Dinner guest with Gray and Edel, Tim and John Cowan on Aug. 23 and on Aug. 26 were Joyce and Jackie George (Redvers).

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Hutton and Kyle families on the death of Ferne (Kyle) Hutton on Aug. 23 at the Deer View Lodge in Wawota, at the age of 100 years. She was formerly of Redvers and Maryfield. A service to celebrate Ferne’s life was held Sept. 1 at Redvers United Church with interment at Redvers Cemetery.

Jeremy Nielsen’s friend James White of Red Deer, AB has come to help out with the harvesting at the Nielsen farm.

Members of the Nielsen family gathered at Dannevirke Cemetery on Aug. 26 where they held the internment of their mother/sister-in-law’/Aunt Gladys (Nielsen/Bacon) Kohn beside her mother Tillie Nielsen. Gladys had passed away June 8, 2016 at Leduc, AB where a funeral service had been held.

Family attending from Alberta were Gladys’ children Sandra, Tracy and Sean, two granddaughters Ashley and Trisha. Relatives from Regina were nieces Alexa and Sonia and grandniece Jessica (all representing Howard’s family), sister-in-law Phyllis Nielsen, nieces Connie and her husband Wayne McIntyre and Joan Nielsen, and nephew Hal and his wife Glenda Nielsen from Alida (all representing Paul’s family). The family then gathered for a supper at the McIntyre cottage at Whitebear Lake.

We are sorry to have to say farewell to Art Shier who has been a long-time resident of Alida and retired farmer in the RM of Reciprocity #32. Art is now making his new home in a suite at Sunset Haven in Carnduff. Best wishes in your new home Art from your Alida friends – we’ll miss you at cards this winter.

Adrianna and Aidyn Junk spent Aug. 25 to 28 with their grandparents Gary and Brenda Junk while their mother April accompanied her mother to Victoria, BC. Ethan Junk returned home from Sylvan Lake, AB on Aug. 31 where he had been attending a hockey school while staying with Uncle Jody, Aunt Jill and cousins Jaxon and Jace.

Edgar and Shirley Bendtsen enjoyed a trip to the Glacier National Park in Montana from Aug. 26 to 31. They took the train from Minot to Essex. This trip was a gift from their family for their 50th Anniversary.

Adam Cowan spent from Aug. 28 to 31 at the Cowan farm helping with the harvest before returning to Estevan for his job. He plans on returning to the farm for the long weekend.

John Cowan left the Cowan farm on August 29 to head back to his home in Hillcrest Mines, AB. He spent a couple of hours visiting with Joyce and Jackie George in Redvers before going on to Regina

where he would visit with his son-in-law Kevin then on Wednesday morning head for Alberta.

On Aug. 31 the Alida Swimming Pool staff held a pool party held swimming pool where a good gathering of young children and adults participated in games, contests and swimming. There was also a barbeque held during the supper hour. This is the last day that the pool will be opened for this year’s summer season. Appreciation goes out to the lifeguards who did an excellent job again this year and also to the Alida Rec Board for keeping the pool in operation. Hope to see everyone again next year.

Peter, Rozanne McClung and daughter Sara motored to Saskatoon on Aug. 31 where Sara got settled into her new residence at the University.

They returned home September 1 and Sara will return to Saskatoon after the long weekend to begin her classes.

Hayley Bendtsen also moved to Saskatoon Aug. 31 to get settled into her new residence and get orientated in order to soon begin her classes.

Diane Potapinski and daughter Julie left Regina on Sept. 1 flying to Peterborough where Julie will get settled into her new residence and get ready to begin her classes at Trent University. Ken joined them in there on Sept. 3 and on Sept. 5 Diane and Ken returned home.

Our Grade 12 Grads (the last kindergarten students who attended Alida School before it was closed) are now getting themselves ready to start their next adventure in life. We wish them all the very best of luck during for this coming year and in years to come. Our grads from Carnduff High School: Hayley Bendtsen will be attending University of Saskatoon registered in Agricultural Bio Resources – Good Luck Hayley. Sara McClung will be attending University of Saskatoon taking Prepharmacy – Good Luck Sara.

Our grads from Redvers High School: Julie Potapinski will be attending Trent University in Peterborough, ON studying Forensic Science – Good Luck Julie. Liam Boutin is attending the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary – Good Luck Liam. Wendal Peet is attending the Saskpoly Technic in Moose Jaw registered in Instrumentation Engineering Technology (a 3-year diploma cooperative education course) – Good Luck Wendal.

Another busy week has gone by and another one is moving right along – we didn’t receive any moisture these past few days so harvest is keeping everyone on the go. At this speed one will soon see harvest come to an end – which I’m sure no one will be sorry to see. Just a reminder folks, to please be careful out there among that big machinery. Also another reminder to please keep me posted on any happenings makes for interesting reading, and I will try not to forget my days and have the news sent into papers on time (back to Monday morning on September 11). Tom Richards held his annual musical evening on Aug. 19. Many family and friends gathered for this annual event held at Tom’s acreage. Bea Kobialko travelled from North Battleford and helped out with the entertainment.

Wade Easton joined with other family members in Weyburn to help his mother, Annie Easton celebrate her 92nd birthday .

Congratulations to Tenille and Paul Ford on the birth of their daughter on Aug. 18. She weighed 8 lbs. 10 oz. and has been named Autumn Hope.

Viola Taylor accompanied Marion Brown to Lake Louise, AB to attend the wedding of Mitchell Taylor and Lindsay Routledge. The wedding took

place on Aug. 26. They also enjoyed a gondola ride over the scenic Rocky Mountains.

Sympathy to Ken and Gwen Robertson and family on the passing of her father, Bill Kitzul of Regina. He passed away on Aug. 23 at the age of 96.

Also sympathy to Bob and Linda Birnie, Neil and Heather Birnie and Eileen Shatford and families on the passing of Rick Birnie. He passed away in Calgary at the age of 61 and was Don and Verna’s son.

Janice Birnie who has been visiting in the area for the past couple of weeks has returned home to Honolulu.

So many books so little time. I have just read, “Born a Crime” by Trevor Noah. What an inspiring story! Trevor’s mother defied racially restrictive laws in South Africa by getting an education, having a career and having a child with a white man when sex was illegal between blacks and whites.

The book includes many insightful observations and amusing items from Trevor’s childhood. It includes eating caterpillars during hard times and being thrown from a car during a kidnapping.

There’s one thing that can be said about a dry season like the one we’ve been having in this area... it certainly does make for an early harvest.

Some of the farmers that I’ve spoken with are already done. Others are only a week or two away from being finished. Several of the people that I’ve spoken to are quite happy with the yield. But, others report that the protein level is down in some cases.

The community is happy to hear that Clair Dorrance is doing well after his surgery last week. Best wishes are extended to him and his family as he pro-

gresses down the road to recovery. As well, residents are very happy to hear that Lyle Balogh is home and recovering from his surgery. Members of the community are also eager to extend their love and support to Doreen Armstrong and her family, as Doreen deals with her own health concerns.

A number of well-wishers attended the bridal shower held at the Kennedy Friendship Center on Saturday to honor Brienna Schmidt, bride-elect of David Blaise. A large group of family, friends and neighbors were also delighted to spend Saturday

A teratogen if NOT a donosaur The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute is using a dinosaur to educate Saskatchewan residents that alcohol can harm unborn babies. Alcohol is a teratogen. A teratogen can cause birth defects.

Other examples of teratogens are lead, the Zika virus, and Rubella.

Why use a dinosaur?

Marlene Dray, FASD Prevention Coordinator says, “The word teratogen sounds like the name of a dinosaur and the catchy t-shirt and poster should attract attention.” The concept for this campaign originates from the Foothills Fetal Alcohol Society in Alberta.

On September 8 and 9, many people in Saskatchewan will be wearing dinosaur t-shirts to raise awareness about the harm alcohol can cause unborn babies. They will be hosting community events such as barbecues, walks, and serving non-alcoholic cocktails (Mocktails).

Alcohol is an equal opportunity teratogen.

When alcohol is used in any pregnancy, it reaches the unborn baby. It can harm fetal development and cause damage to whatever part of the baby is developing at that time (e.g., brain, organs, hearing, and joints). Harm to the brain can cause problems with the sensory system, learning, attention, behaviour, and making friends. These difficulties may not be obvious until a child is older and in school.

Every pregnancy is different so each baby will be affected differ-

ently. Current research suggests that up to 4% of individuals in Canada (1,406,069 people) live with harm from prenatal alcohol exposure (Canada FASD Research Network).

When planning a pregnancy, it is recommended that alcohol not be used so there is no chance a baby is exposed before the pregnancy test is ‘positive’. Almost 50% of pregnancies are not planned, and many babies may be exposed to alcohol before a pregnancy is confirmed. Bev Drew (FASD Prevention Coordinator) states, “It is never too late to stop drinking to protect the baby. Every day without alcohol gives a baby a better chance to be

healthy.” Partners and friends can support a pregnant woman to not drink. The new face of fixed income For the last 30 years bonds have helped boost portfolios. With fixed income prices now falling, it’s time rethink how these assets fit in a portfolio.

Submitted Brett Michael Monka, a country artist from Regina, entertained at Moose Mountain Lodge on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Monka is 28-yearsold and has been playing and singing since he was 17. The performer also writes songs and sang a couple of his own tunes as well as songs by Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash and others.

Monka will play at the CMA Awards coming to Saskatoon.

This was his first experience performing at a care home and he carried it off like a pro.

He had an easy manner - told some stories, answered some questions and made some humorous remarks that resulted in roaring laughter.

There were toes tapping, hands clapping and wheelchairs dancing throughout the performance.

He didn’t know what to expect but he really enjoyed it and would do it again.

Five generations celebrate together

It’s not every day a family can celebrate five generations, let along one both sides of the family. My great grandmother was born in 1917 and my daughter was born in 2017, making them 100 years apart,” Chantal Wilson explained.
