Manor School participates in annual Jump Rope for Heart Kelly Running Observer Staff

Manor School’s elementary students participated in their annual Jump Rope for Heart afternoon on Friday, Feb. 17.

The students raised $907.45 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, while they also enjoyed an afternoon of jumping and games.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation has been operating since 1952 as a way to reduce the toll of heart disease and stroke on Canadians, during this time the Heart and Stroke Foundation has stated that the cardiovascular death rate has declined in Canada by 75 percent, since its inception.

According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation: “55 percent of Canadian children aged 12-19 do not eat at least five servings (the minimum recommended) of fruit and vegetables daily, and fewer than one in 10 Canadian children aged 2-17 are active enough to meet Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines.”

“60 percent of Canadian adults aged 19+ do not eat at least seven servings (the minimum recommended) of fruit and vegetables daily, and only 15 percent of adults accumulate the recommended 150 minutes per week of moderate – to vigorousintensity physical activity.”

Thus, the continued support of Jump Rope for Heart at Manor School encourages healthy habits with their students as they exercise

In addition to skipping throughout the afternoon on Friday, Feb. 17, for Jump Rope for Heart, students at Manor School participated in a variety of fun, active games including one where they had to keep a bean bag balanced on their head while moving around the gym. and are given a healthy snack – oranges – as well as water breaks throughout the afternoon of activity.

For the 2014-15 school year, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, states on its website that more than 977,200 students across 3,660 schools across Canada were engaged to be active and to learn about healthy living.

SaskTel bringing LTE to more Rural communities

SaskTel announced on Tuesday it has expanded LTE coverage for the first time to 96 towers that serve the rural areas and communities of western and southeastern Saskatchewan (see the full list of upgraded towers in Appendix A - attached).

Redvers Arts Centre building update Kelly Running Observer Staff

In June 2014 flooding of the Redvers Arts Centre led to the building being closed due to structural concerns.

For the past two and a half years, the Redvers Arts Council and Building Committee have been working diligently to save the building and re-open the Arts Centre.

The project, however, was announced to have been abandoned in a public information session on Thursday, Feb. 16. Approximately 50 people were in attendance to receive an update on the direction the Arts Council and Building Committee were going in regards to the renovations of the Arts Centre.

On Jan. 15 of 2015, a public meeting had been held with the majority in attendance supporting the erection of a new building; but, preliminary plans projected the cost of the project to be approximately $2.5 million. This would include the theatre/stage area, change rooms, washrooms, a small hall, and kitchen/concession. Additionally it would be a one-level project to increase accessibility.

It was decided in the summer of 2015 that this would not be feasible and the decision was made to look at rehabilitating and renovating the Arts Centre.

Throughout the rest of 2015 and most of 2016, a multi-phase plan was estab-

lished with the aid of an engineering firm and architectural firm. The multiphase plan would mean they could fundraise and work on the project in pieces.

Phase 1 would include structural steel channel reinforcing installed between the new basement floor slab and the main floor joist structure to reinforce the existing foundational walls, a new cement floor to replace the wooden joist floor, exterior grading and water prevention strategies – including weeping tile, sump pump and pits, reinforce the main beam, and rough plumbing for future washroom and kitchen plans and planned provisions for a future elevator between the three levels to be included in future Phases.

Work would take place from December 2016 to February 2017 and the building would be usable by the end of February.

Once the contractors began work in December, however, it was discovered that the foundation of the building was worse than originally expected. “…the onsite work in December by our contractors (and subsequent testing) revealed that the concrete foundation is in much worse condition than was originally thought. Surprisingly, the concrete on the south wall – which was our chief concern – is stronger than the concrete in other areas,” the Arts Council explained.

Southeast College and SaskTel Partner on Telecommunication Training Program Southeast College and SaskTel recently partnered to develop and offer new training designed to meet ongoing employment demands within the Telecommunications industry. “Introduction to Telecommunications Standard Wiring” is a 64 hour course initially offered as a pilot in the spring of 2016 and will now be offered to the public at key intervals throughout the year at Southeast College’s Estevan Campus.

“Trade specific skills in the area of telecommunications are in demand,” said Jeff Richards, Vice President, Strategic Development at Southeast College. “We recognized an opportunity to partner with SaskTel to develop training that would help to meet that labour market demand. We are also very excited that Southeast College is able to offer completion bursaries to each of this year’s graduates of the program as part of our commitment to our partnership with SaskTel and for the long term success of this program.”

The course is an introduction into the basics in telecommunications, including the components and wiring of telephone and data networks in both residential and commercial environments. An emphasis on hands-on practical training with equipment typically used in the industry is a key element to this course.

Country’s Codie Prevost to bring “Radio” to Arcola

Award-winning Canadian country music artist Codie Prevost has opened for country music luminaries Garth Brooks, Florida Georgia Line, Joe Nichols and The Oak Ridge Boys- but he says it’s his audience at Arcola’s “amazing” MacMurray Theatre who will get a sneak preview of songs from his upcoming album ‘Radio’ during his show there on Thursday, March 9.

“We don’t have an exact release date yet, but I’ll be playing some new material from the album and people can do a pre-purchase for a signed copy at the show,” says Prevost. “And they will receive the album first- before anyone.”

“It’s my fifth album and it’s been a big process.

I’m a lot more in the driver’s seat on this one than I’ve been in the past- both as far as growing as an artist and being in the studio.”

Prevost first picked up a guitar as a 14-year-old.

Since then, he has recorded five albums (including his upcoming release, “Radio”), won dozens of awards-from the Saskatchewan Country Music Association (SCMA) and the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) as well as receiving a nomination for the Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Awards. He is a festival favourite in both Canada and Australia and in 2016, completed his third Australian tour.

Although Prevost has performed everywhere from barrooms to big arenas, he praised both the character and the acoustics of Arcola’s MacMurray Theatre.

“It’s amazing anytime you play a venue like The Mac,” says Prevost. “I come from a small town that’s about the same size as Arcola- Archerwill, Saskatchewan- and it’s really great that there’s a theatre like The Mac in a community of that size.

There’s so much history in the building.”

Prevost is no stranger to this part of the province.

His upcoming performance in Arcola will be his third in that community and he says each show is unique.

“When I performed in Arcola the first time, it was me and one other guy and we did a duo show and performed over two nights,” says Prevost. “Both evenings were just incredible- we had people up on stage and there was a lot of crowd interaction. And that’s something that hasn’t changed- the connection with the audience.”

“The second time I played Arcola, I came with a full band,” adds Prevost. “This time, I’m coming with a trio and it’s going to be a really fun show.

“It’ll be totally different from my previous shows with a full band or the duo show.”

Prevost says the addition of material from ‘Radio’ will give listeners an accurate assessment of where he is currently- as both a musician and a man.

“I’ve learned a lot of lessons and the songs really, really portray where I am in my life right now,” he says. “It’s a little bit of my life and a little bit of everything else. I’m really happy with ‘Radio’ and there’s quite a bit of creativity that I tapped into with the songs on this record.”

Prevost says that as rewarding as the recording process is, a vital part of his life as a performer is meeting his audiences.

“We’ll definitely be around after the show in Arcola to meet people. We usually stick around way too long after a show,” jokes Prevost. “But to me, that’s important.”

“And our audiences from that part of the province have been great,” he says. “And Arcola has been a great community to host us- (Optimist Club members) Blake Brownridge and his wife, Stacy and Glen Lawson at the theatre, just to name a few.”

“I’m really excited to introduce songs from the new album at the show and to introduce new audience members to my music.”

Weekly RCMP report The Carlyle detachment of the RCMP responded to a variety of calls throughout their coverage area.

Assault A domestic dispute was reported in the Carlyle area. The reported assault also included alcohol and property damage.

There was a second domestic assault in the Carlyle area which is

under investigation.

Assistance RCMP gave assistance to Social Services during this time.

The RCMP are assisting SGI in a fraud investigation in Carlyle.

A warrant is out for an arrest.

RCMP attended three mental health calls to service.

Break and enter There were break and enters reported in Redvers, a cottage in the Carlyle area, and one in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. They are currently under investigation.

Theft A theft of cash at the Rec Centre was reported.

If anyone in the community has any information on this matter, the RCMP ask that you contact them.

A vehicle was reported as being taken without the owner’s consent. When the vehicle was returned, the owner didn’t want to pursue action.

There was a truck reported to be stolen, however it had been seized by the RCMP under the

Traffic Safety Act. Failure to comply There were five occurrences involving reports of breach of release conditions. Currently the matters are being investigated or have led to arrests, while one has been released under charges.

An individual failed to appear to have their fingerprints taken.

False alarms There were false alarms in Carlyle and Redvers.

Fraud Money had been taken out of an individual’s account at a bank. The bank has handled the situation.

Alcohol related offences An impaired driving investigation took place.

The driver had attempted to drive down a skidoo track. The individual was not intoxicated and had not been paying attention. This took place in the Carlyle area.

There was a call reporting an impaired driver.

Patrols were made, but the driver was not located.

EMS picked up an intoxicated male walking down Hwy 9 and took him to the hospital. After he was found to be fine, he was transferred to cells and lodged until sober.

An intoxicated individual found at Kenosee Lake was lodged until sober.

An individual in the Carlyle area was fined $360 for having liquor.

There was an erratic driver reported in the Carlyle area. Patrols were made, but the individual was not located.

Collision There was a rollover West of Arcola on Hwy 13.

The single occupant was uninjured.

A vehicle was involved in a rollover on Hwy 9.

The single occupant was uninjured.

There was a collision with a deer.

Various minor collisions were reported during this time.

RCMP would like to remind people that as the temperature ebbs and flows below and above 0 degrees that drivers need to be cautious. In areas where there is shade ice may remain on the road or water may freeze quicker, as well as a change in elevation may bring different road conditions.

Or if roads may become ice packed if the pavement warms and snow is blown across, sticking to the road. So, it is imperative to drive with caution.

Another individual was reported for attempting to drive down a snowmobile trail.

Traffic infractions Seven individuals were charged with having no motor vehicle insurance. They were each charged $580.

Approximately 25 individuals were issued speeding tickets last week. The high was for $388.

Numerous inspection tickets were issued regarding wrong licence plates on a vehicle, mud flaps, window tint, head lights, etc… Individuals who receive these must have them fixed and report to the RCMP. Three seatbelt tickets were issued; each one was charged $175.

An individual was charged with not having a driver’s licence: $150.

A warning was issued for failing to display a validation sticker on a truck.

Two people were charged with being on their cell phones while driving. They were each charged $280.

Miscellaneous A moose was shot too close to a residence in the Carlyle area.

Carlyle’s second doctor expected mid-March Kelly Running Observer Staff

Carlyle Town Council discussed various topics at their bi-weekly meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Safety workshop A safety training workshop for council members and Town of Carlyle staff will be hosted by Pinter & Associates. It will be a full day workshop.

New physician Carlyle’s second doctor is expected to arrive in mid-March.

Land acquisition The Town has purchased a portion of Stigings land in order to build a service road through the area.

Townfolio Townfolio is a business, which provides research for the Town and would compile varying statistics on the community. For people looking to invest, build, or move to the area, this data would provide information on population, household income, number of dwellings, quality of life, etc… This information would then be embedded on the Town webpage. They use over 30 different municipal data sources to come up

with the community profile. Typically each year the town administrator, Huguette Lutz, has developed a paper copy; but, the Townfolio project would be more comprehensive.

The Town is still discussing whether or not they want to use this service or not.

Contributions With numerous locally hosted provincial youth competitions: youth curling last year, figure skating earlier this year, and Sask High School Association (SHA) Provincial Volleyball to be hosted this fall at G.F. Kells; the Town has decided that for a provincial tournament the town will donate $200 to the local host committee. An application for the donation will need to be submitted to the Town.

Asset Management Proposal Although this has not yet been approved, Town Administrator – Huguette Lutz – explains that an Asset Management Proposal, an RFP, will needs to be completed. The Gas Tax Grant gives this community approximately $80,000 per year and as of March 21, 2018, access to the grant will be limited to communities with an Assessment Management Proposal.

Communities without an Assessment Management Proposal will be unable to access the Gas Tax Grant.

Lutz would like to bring communities together to have the Assessment Management Proposal conducted as there would potentially be cost savings in communities working together. For example if Carlyle and another community had the assessment done together, they would each still be responsible for their own costs of maintenance in their own communities; the savings would come in having the assessment done together.

The assessment would map all of the Town’s assets: water mains, sewer mains, and roads are the main three they require you to start with and eventually it will encompass buildings, equipment, etc…

The company would come in and identify assets, mark the main three on a map, then identify the level of life left in the infrastructure. This allows communities to plan knowing that they will need certain funds to maintain or replace infrastructure according to a timeline.

Lutz explained that the asset/infrastructure deficit in any community is quite large and that this would assist in town planning and minimizing that deficit.

Council requested further information on the matter.

Ryan Boyd with SG&R Farms from Forrest, MB, will speak about Increasing Diversity to Enhance Soil Health: this presentation will focus on integrating crops and livestock.

Rosengren will then speak again about Intercropping Annual Cash Crops: looking at agronomics, economics, and logistics of crop combinations – canola/peas/lentils, flax/chickpeas, and corn/soybeans.

The final presentation of the day will be done

by Ann Wasko, Market Analyst with Gateway Livestock, which will look at markets and market trends throughout 2017.

Looking at the legalization of marijuana

Friday mornings in the office tend to be a little bit slower, so we end up discussing a wide variety of topics. One topic of discussion, which was addressed were thoughts surrounding the legalization of marijuana.

The Liberals ran on a platform, which stated they would pursue this legalization. Although it hasn’t Kelly Running been a priority in government, I Observer Staff do feel that it is something that would generate revenue for the government. Much like the Government of Saskatchewan has a liquor tax, the Government of Canada could impose one on marijuana sales.

In an article from the Denver Post by Carlos Illescas, which was published on May 26, 2016, “Marijuana sales tax revenue huge boon for Colorado cities,” Illescas reports that “revenue from retail marijuana sales is helping communities address homelessness, send children to college, patch potholes, secure water rights, and fund an array of projects.”

Currently in Saskatchewan it would appear as though the government is pulling back funding for education and health care. These are the two places I want to see my tax dollars go towards – and that’s despite not having a child or really needing the health care system currently. It’s the fact that when I will need it, I want it to be well funded. I can handle driving on cruddy roads. We’ve been there before. After all when I was growing up the running joke was that you could tell when you had crossed into Alberta, whether you saw the sign welcoming you or not, because the roads immediately got better.

Legalizing marijuana would help fund projects, as it has in Colorado, which would otherwise be unobtainable. In addition to the funds raised through a different taxation base, the legalization of marijuana would also bring down costs in the legal system. How many are charged, gone to court, or even spent time in jail because of marijuana? So, cost in patrolling for marijuana would go down and the government would be making money off of the legalization of it.

Now, I’m not saying Colorado has the perfect sys-

tem and I do think Canada needs to do its own grunt work in figuring what our system would look like; however, when you look at alcohol in Canada… is marijuana really worse?

First off it’s just a plant, so are coca leaves – but cocaine has a ton of additives which changes it completely. Secondly, marijuana smokers tend to be more relaxed than those drinking alcohol who seem to be more inclined to become violent. Although the affect would be different, alcohol and marijuana seem to be providing a similar effect, to have the individual become inebriated.

Personally, I have never tried marijuana, so I’m not one of those people that wants it legalized in order to be able to smoke it. It really doesn’t affect me.

Would I be tempted to try cannabis essential oils for joint pain if it were available? That makes me

sound older than my late-20s, but I do have bad knees and may be inclined if it were legalized to see if it works.

There is a lot of research out there though promoting the medicinal properties of marijuana and for that reason, there are plant breeders which have been working to minimize the amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinal) in the plant, which causes the “high” associated with marijuana, and increasing the CBD (cannabidiol), which holds the medicinal properties within marijuana.

So, much like an alcohol content being posted on a liquor bottle, the same could be done for the strain of marijuana being sold.

Ultimately though, I think the government should legalize marijuana. Form laws surrounding it like alcohol, but I don’t believe it should be illegal.

Waiting to see it through You know the type. The fan who leaves the game before it ends to try and beat the traffic.

Feeling secure in the outcome they are the ticket holders who exit early to avoid the inevitable parking lot jam. Most of the time it works out. But sometimes… oh, wow…sometimes a twist is in store.

Toronto Maple Leaf fans are still nursing the wounds from the Shelley Luedtke 2013 playoffs. Playing against the Boston Bruins the Leafs led 4-1 midway through the third period of game 7. Toronto was heading to the second round! Until the comeback. The comeback that saw the Bruins rally with three goals to force overtime and going on to win the nail-biter 5-4. With their team down and just minutes to go, a contingent of Boston fans left the arena early that night. They missed celebrating the biggest comeback in Bruins’ playoff history.

But it was the comeback earlier this month that had people talking when those who had tickets to the Super Bowl…(yes, shake your head in disbelief)…left early. With the Falcons up 28-3 on the Patriots the ending seemed assured. So you had to feel for the three dozen fans who found themselves gathered in

the parking lot--watching the most dramatic finish in Super Bowl history--on a TV in the trunk of an SUV. I will admit there are times I wished I could see ahead to the conclusion of a circumstance I was in. I wanted to know how it was going to turn out. Especially when the climb was steep and I questioned continuing. But if we aren’t willing to see it through we are robbing ourselves of what could be the very best part--that twist that changes everything.

It’s certainly true there are times we feel tackled by situations that leave us feeling down and out. Maybe we have been outplayed or were penalized in a way that didn’t seem right. We don’t see a way through because the odds seemed stacked against us.

Oh…but be reminded; sometimes the unexpected happens and there is a comeback no one could have seen coming.

Take first year university students in Canada as an example. Research has found 1 in 6 who enrol will not complete their program. First year students reported stress, fatigue and inadequate academic preparation as reasons for dropping out. University certainly is not for everyone, but for those that can persevere through that first year the percentage who go on to graduate rises substantially. Even though students said the rigors of their program increased in each subsequent year, pushing through the struggle of year one was key.

ined which year of marriage is toughest by looking at divorce rates and conducting interviews. Since each marriage is unique it shouldn’t come as a surprise that each study came up with a unique finding. The common thread though were couples who said working through what they deemed their toughest year helped establish a foundation for long-term success. They needed to see it through.

Although we can point to the exception, most of the time those who have worked hard are the best prepared to prevail. Trying to get debt under control? It hurts, but there are sacrifices that need to be made.

Trying to improve your health? It takes sweat, and the need to say no to things that are detrimental. Trying to repair a relationship? It takes someone to put a plan in motion and risk making the first move. Because the true victors are not the ones with their arms in the air celebrating the win, but the ones with arms outstretched drawing in those they need and those that need them to help meet the challenge of the day.

No matter how difficult the situation, or how overwhelming the odds, things can turn unexpectedly.

Comebacks are possible, especially when more than a trophy is on the line. So we need to stay in the game.

It just might turn out we can be the major player in a comeback of our own making. You just never know which surprise ending is coming next. That’s my outlook.

The memory-go-round

Of all the things I’ve lost, I miss my mind the most.

Nobody’s perfect. I mean, we’re all human and have our frailties and failings. At the moment I seem to be teetering at the edge of ‘advancing age’ and find that my memory stick is malfunctioning. This is probably because it’s so full of wisdom that it can’t hold on to little things like “Now, what

was I doing?”

The other explanation is a bit more sinister – I certainly don’t want to think that my stored data has been corrupted with an Alzheimer’s virus.

Now all I need is computer expert to come and defrag my processors so I have more room on my chip. Or something like that.

If it’s Alzheimer’s I’ve had it quite a few years now. My main symptom is starting into a story – or even a simple sentence – and stalling out mid thought with no idea where I was going with it.

You read about couples who have been together so long, or know each other so well, that they finish each other’s sentences. I have come to the point in my life that it might be handy to have someone who could do that for me. On the other hand, my life mate might not be the best pick for

that job; he doesn’t necessarily always know what I’m thinking, not that it would stop him from adlibbing if he had a chance.

My other problem is forgetting where I put stuff. Again, this is not something all that new in my life. As a child I was called a day-dreamer, and throughout my adult years I’ve been told I would have made a great absentminded professor. It just means that I multi task and sometimes overdo it. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

Most of the time it’s not such a big deal. Whatever I’m looking for will turn up in time. Sometimes it just takes retracing my steps and the answer comes to me. Sometimes I have to go looking for something else and a previous and unrelated mystery is solved. Sometimes it turns out that it wasn’t even me who put it where I find it (grandsons and husbands are equally culpable in this respect), and sometimes it becomes apparent that if I’ve lived without it this long, I didn’t really need it in the first place.

The only category that really worries me though, is the one where whatever I am looking for was so important that I felt the need to put it away in a safe place. At this stage in my life, and given all the times where this tactic has gone so horribly wrong, the mere mention of ‘a safe place’ should set off all kinds of warning bells in

my head. But it doesn’t. I’ve looked in all of my usual safe places and my much longed for second set of car keys are not there. Obviously I must have a super super safe place that even I am not allowed to know the whereabouts of.

It’s been almost a year now, and I’m still looking. The last time I actually recall having them in my hand was while I was packing for a short trip out of the country. We were going with someone else and so our car was staying home. I can remember thinking I should give the keys to the closest of our kids in case something happened.

He swears that I did not do this, so did I put them somewhere I knew they would be found (a failure, obviously because this has not happened) or did I actually get them to him and HE has forgotten where HE put them? The riddle goes unanswered.

They are not where all the excess and/or unexplained keys are kept. They are not in the glove box or center console of the car. They are not in the pocket of every. Single. Coat. Pocket on the farm (I know because I have checked them all 14 times now.) Neither are they in any of the purses I have owned over the past three decades.

Having only one set of keys makes a person absolutely paranoid about locking them in their car.

As if thinking that you’re losing your memory doesn’t age you fast enough.

Too tired to function So tired. That is what I am today; our child is consistently waking up LONG before the sun for quite a few days in a row. I have no idea why. But 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning is what she feels is a reasonable wake up time, even though she is VERY wrong.

Take this morning for example.

She went to bed the night before Krystyn Gillies very easily, like always and my husband and I were asleep by 10:00. I know, not very “cool” parents, but we like our sleep. At 3:45 in the morning, I hear rustling in the dining room, where she sleeps until her bedroom is done.

Then I heard her say “MOMMY!” and I knew there was no coming back from that.

I heard her crawl out of her crib and suddenly she was snuggled up beside me, sobbing about who knows what. I knew she was laying it on pretty thick because she has this squeaky whine when she is sad, but not hurt or something. I gave her a quick snuggle then began the tedious negotiations needed to convince her that her own bed is where she wants to be.

“Do you want to go back to your bed?” I asked and I received a resounding NO. Then I explained to her that it wasn’t time to wake up yet, because it wasn’t even 4 a.m. yet. She began to whine and say no, over and over again. I finally reasoned with her; well some would say bribe, but it is survival of the fittest around here.

“If you go back to your bed and go to sleep, you can have Cheerios when you wake up, ok?” I asked. “Ok,” she whined and I put her back into her bed and tucked her in and said I love you and went back to our bed. I knew she wasn’t going to back to sleep any time soon, and I can’t sleep if she is awake so I swiped open my phone and began to read my e-book while she pouted and tossed and turned in her bed.

My husband barely hears a word when he is asleep at night and I am not even certain he heard her that time, because his snoring was enough to suck the curtains off the wall. I am not sure what woke him for a brief moment a while later, but he suggested I go back to sleep; like that was a valid option. I told him that some of us can’t sleep through a whiny toddler trying to negotiate her way out of her bed. He mumbled something about him being able to and in the next breath, he was snoring again.

I may or may not have entertained the idea of pushing him out of the bed with both feet to stop the snoring, but I thought better of it and went back to my book.

About 45 minutes of hearing a few sneezes, a couple of

yawns and many shouts and whines about wanting to come to our bed, I heard the word “Cheerios”.

Uh oh. For some crazy reason, she felt as though she had “slept enough” and was ready for those cursed o’s she can’t live without every day. Sure enough, she crawled out of her bed and on the way to our bedroom, she tripped on something or who knows what but suddenly, she is crying and saying “owwwiieee”, whilst laying on the drama extra thick.

She smartened up this go around, sneaking over to her daddy’s side of the bed and crawling up in his arms, which thankfully stopped the snoring, but now we had a toddler in our bed again. He snuggled her up and I could hear him drifting off to sleep again when I elbowed him gently, explaining that we needed to be a united front if we ever want to sleep past 5:00 a.m. again.

He sighed and put her back in her bed, much to her dismay, and finally she went back to sleep about 20 minutes later. By this time, it was around 5:30 and my husbands alarm goes off at 6:00 every weekday morning and I was dreading being awake any longer.

Some how, some way, I went back to sleep before his alarm and he went about getting ready for the day.

Usually, this is what wakes her up on most mornings, but thankfully, this morning, she was much to tired from her earlier wake up and slept right through till 8:30, which meant I got to do the same. By the time this column goes to press, I hope to have the entire upstairs painted and ready for flooring, which means she will hopefully be able to sleep longer in the mornings up there without anything waking her up.

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars were battling the Redvers Rockets in the first round of Big Six League Playoffs.

They first met on Wednesday, Feb. 8, where the Rockets came out to a 7-1 lead. Heading into the second game on Tuesday, Feb. 14, the Rockets won their second in the best of five series with a score of 3-1.

The Rockets scored two in the first period: Jordon Miller earned the first assisted by Drew Hoff and Kevin Mann, and the second was scored by Mann assisted by Koltyn Miller and Travis Poirier.

No one scored in the second with both teams looking strong.

Late in the third, the Cougars looked like they might put on a last minute rush with Branden Lequyer finding the back of the net assisted by Cooper Fox and Phil Doucet. However, Redvers answered back with a goal by Drew Hoff assisted by Ryan Yates.

were looking strong, but the Cougars came out with nothing to lose and scored two goals early in the first: Jesse Matthewson earned an unassisted goal, while Billy Greenwood scored off an assist by Brent McLean.

Redvers answered with a goal late in the first by Braden Liboiron assisted by Remi Lamotte and Kelsey Kenler.

The second period the Rockets tied the game with Lamotte earning a goal off an assist by Craig Gaudet.

Heading into the third the Cougars played strong defence and Jordan Fox assisted his brother Cooper in a rush down the ice, which ended in a goal for the Cougars. The game ended 3-2 in favour of the Cougars and extended the playoff round to Game 4 of the series, which was held in Carlyle on Sunday, Feb. 19.

The Cougars came out strong in the fourth game of the series, with fans hopeful after the first two periods where the Cougars took control scoring two in the first and two in the second.

Goals were by Mark Shaw assisted by Kelly Currie and Phil Doucet, then Brent McLean earned an unassisted goal against Redvers. Redvers retaliated with one by Drew Hoff assisted by Jordon Miller.

In the second Cooper Fox with the Cougars earned a goal with assists from Ben Johnstone and Brent McLean. Redvers scored one to keep themselves in it by Remi Lamotte assisted by Gavin Martel. The Cougars took the lead to two, however, with a goal by Brent McLean assisted by Kelly Currie.

Leading 4-2 in the third period, Redvers stepped up to control the final minutes of the game scoring two goals: Kelsey Kenler earned an unassisted goal, while Ryan Yates found the net with an assist by Craig Gaudet.

Headed into overtime, Redvers continued to control the action with Drew Hoff capitalizing on an opportunity and finding a way to get the puck past Cougars goalie Josh Hohn for the win.

Within the first round of playoffs Bienfait swept Oxbow in three, Wawota took Midale in three, and so did Yellow Grass over Carnduff. The Cougars took one game off of Redvers for a 3-1 record in their series.

Bienfait will now take on Yellow Grass, while Redvers will take on Wawota in further Big Six action.

NHL’S all-time best … 3-2-1….99!

By Bruce Penton Canadians are famous for being polite and courteous, so it was no surprise that during last month’s National Hockey League all-star game festivities, when the top 100 players from all time were unveiled with rankings of players by various decades — instead of a hot 100 countdown that gave us a dramatic, drumroll-accompanied No. 1—Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux sat at the front of a press conference and unanimously agreed that the best all-time was the late Gordie Howe.

Such a Canadian thing to say. Showing the utmost respect to a beloved legend is another Canadianism, and the fabled trio of stars — one of which is the actual No. 1 all-time (sorry, Gordie!) — disappointed no one with their public acclaim for Howe, who passed away last June at the age of 88.

This is not to dismiss Howe’s greatness. He set records through a career that lasted until he was 51 years old that no one thought would ever be broken, until Gretzky came along and smashed them during an unusually wide open offensive era.

Had the NHL had the courage to do a 100-to-1 countdown — controversial indeed, and guaranteed to put the league into a no-win situation — they likely would have had Howe ranked No. 3.

That’s one man’s opinion, someone who was born early enough to watch Howe, Gretzky and Bobby Orr in their primes. Neither Howe nor Gretzky had the offensive explosiveness of Orr. Neither Orr nor Howe had Gretzky’s hockey brain, one which allowed him to control the game whenever he was on the ice and lead to unprecedented goal-scoring and astonishing I-don’t-believe-what-I-just-saw setups. Yes, it was

like he had eyes in the back of his head, making plays that no one before, or since, has come close to replicating.

As for No. 1, it has to be Gretzky. Had Orr’s wonky knees not shortened his career — he played only nine full seasons and parts of three others — he might be No. 1 in this review. Orr’s talent left him head and shoulders above anyone else in the league from 196675, just as Gretzky was so sublime during his prime from 1979-98. Consider these two seasons of Orr’s: 39 goals and 102 assists in 1970-71; 46 goals and 89 assists in 1974-75 — figures unheard of for a defenceman. Gretzky made a mockery of the record book with eight straight 50-plus goal seasons, including 92 (and 120 assists) in 1981-82, at the age of 20. Or how about 1985-86, when he put together crazy numbers (52 goals, 163 assists)?

There’s good reason they call him the Great One. They could also call him the Great No. 1.

world of body contact, they didn’t pull off as many wins as they would’ve liked. The scoreboard may not have reflected how hard they practiced and worked together as a team, but they fought hard throughout the year to try to pull off that win.

They were pretty excited at the Virden tourth nament when that hard work payed off and they Annual got the win.

Throughout the season their team shrunk due to injuries, hopefully everyone heals over the off season.

A huge thank you to the coaches, helpers, and manager for volunteering their time this season!

The Carlyle Bantam Cougars have officially finished their 2016-2017 hockey season. They came together from four towns to form their team this year when Oxbow/Alameda didn’t have a team.

Carlyle accepted four boys onto their team so they could enjoy the hockey season. Their goalie came from Weyburn and the Bantam Cougars were formed.

But with over a million Canadians claiming full or partial Polish heritage, the full scope of the community’s cultural influence has been tremendous across diverse spheres, including business, education, politics, entertainment, the arts, science and athletics.

The very first Pole to call Canada home did so as early as 1752, but substantial immigration only started in 1854. In the beginning, the Polish community in Canada consisted mainly of homesteaders who settled the Prairies, building their homes in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Later generations were wealthier and more educated, and tended to flock towards urban centres. From the end of the Second World War onward, Ontario became the province of choice for more than half of all new immigrants.

Today, one out of five Polish Canadians lives in Toronto. Substantial communities can also be found in Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary and Montreal. In the 1930s, Poles in Canada began to form social clubs to preserve their customs and traditions, and today more than 250 such organizations continue to operate across the country. Part-time Polish language education is available in various towns and cities, and more than 200,000 Canadians claim Polish as their mother tongue. There’s also an active Polish press in Canada including one daily newspaper, one semi-weekly and numerous other smaller publications.

Métis artist Robert “Bob” Boyer was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, in 1948, and spent a lifetime inspiring Canadians through art. Boyer’s paintings brought to light issues close to Canada’s Aboriginal communities and featured a bold, colourful esthetic. He’s best known for his Blanket Statements series, which used flannel blankets as canvases for oil paintings. These works combined traditional Northern Plains design with contemporary references and proffered political commentary on the impacts of colonialism on Indigenous cultures. Collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery (G-87-295). themselves were an important part of the message, as they were a reference to the smallpoxcontaminated blankets that early European settlers distributed to Aboriginal people, ultimately leading to the deaths of thousands of individuals.

Boyer received his Bachelor of Education with a specialization in art education from the University of Saskatchewan in 1971. He went on to teach high school for a few years, before taking the position of community program officer for the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina. His association with the gallery lasted many years, during which he played an important part in the creation of numerous community events and programs, including summer art camps for teens.

Beginning in the late 70s, Boyer affiliated himself with the First Nations University of Canada, where he worked as both a professor and head of the art department. During this period he taught many Aboriginal artists, who were inspired by his desire to democratize Indigenous art and to share its importance with all Canadians.

Boyer’s own art evolved as time passed. In the mid-90s he departed from his politically charged works and began creating pieces that were both spiritual and personal in nature. These works still highlighted Aboriginal themes, but now came from a place of celebration towards a vital, vibrant culture. This stance spilled over into other parts of his life, leading Boyer to become passionate about the powwow as a means to rejoice in the strength of Indigenous cultures. He attended and danced at many such events all over North America, and it was while dancing at a powwow in Nebraska at the age of 56 that Bob Boyer succumbed to a sudden heart attack.

Today, the Métis artist’s works can be viewed as part of the permanent collections at a number of galleries in Canada, including the Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

The Alida Community extends get well wishes to Glennis Peterson who has had heart surgery and is recovering very well.

Attending the funeral at Macoun for Lorraine (Mailhiot) Wilvers on Feb. 14 were Prudent and Joey Mailhiot, Louis and Lucille Gervais, and Andy Girard as well as friends from Redvers. While there they met up and renewed acquaintance with Mike and Cathy Bukatka of Shaunavon (formally of Alida) who were also attending the funeral.

It’s nice to see Linda Akins back at her post in the Alida Post Office after her and her husband Don enjoyed a great winter holiday touring in the nice warm climate of southern USA. Welcome back Linda.

Gary Junk travelled to Regina on Feb. 16 to meet and pick up daughter Kara Junk and granddaughter Morgan who flew in from Sylvan Lake, AB. They spent Friday visiting Uncle Ken Junk, who is in the hospital and also visited with Grandma Rose Junk, Aunt Dina and Hayden Junk before coming to Alida for the weekend. On Sunday they visited with Grandma Dot Girard in Estevan.

Jeff Cowan spent a few days (Feb. 18-20) visiting at the farm with his parents Gray and Edel, also with his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley as well as spending time with friends Grant Barber and Jenny Riersgard.

At the end of the ride, riders and friends met at the Alida Hall where the results were finalized and a very successful event came to a close. The SE Stubble Jumpers appreciate all those who came out to support their local trails. The Alida Rec. Board members operated a bar at the hall and also served up a delicious supper of pull pork or ham on a bun and/or hotdog and dessert. They served 140 at supper and the proceeds from the bar and supper went towards the Alida Rink renovations. It was a very successful event for them as well and they appreciate the continued supports for their fundraising events.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Marie Anna Boutin on her death on Feb. 18 at Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle. Her funeral mass will be held on Feb. 24 at Cantal. Condolences are extended to all other family members as well.

Hope everyone else had a great Family Day. The décor at the hall is slowly but surely taking on a different look as the weeks get closer to Drama week. The stage as now become the site of the Dead Man’s Gulch Hotel and is waiting for it’s final touches to be made. In another it will be very busy at the hall when the whole place will have a very different look. It is a very busy time for the Act One Production crew but at the same time very enjoyable. Roy Bortolotto spent Feb. 14 to 16 in Saskatoon at the Ancient Spirals Retreat taking courses in continuing education.

Beverly Kay and her husband, Kevin have recently moved to Wawota as pastors of the Free Methodist Church. They are the parents of four children, 3 of whom are married. On Dec. 6, 2016, they welcomed a new grandson, Oliver Desmond Kay born to Trevor and Samantha Kay of Belleville, ON. On Jan. 15, Beverly flew out of Regina and after a brief visit with her parents and sister’s family north of Seattle, Washington she traveled on to Anchorage to spend time with Heather and Steve Routh to await the birth of a new sister for Kayden and Zahava. Beverly left Anchorage on Jan. 27 with a short visit with her son, Adam and his wife Rachel in Washington before returning home.

Blaise reappointed to Wawota Housing Authority Victor Blaise has been reappointed to the Wawota Housing Authority Board of Directors.

Other members of the board of directors are Betty Walker, Carol Nicurity, Philip Reddekop and Philip Heinrichs. Heinrichs is chairperson.

The Wawota Housing Authority is a community-based organization that provides daily management of 19 housing units constructed and operated under the terms of a federal provincial municipal cost sharing agreement.

Sympathy to Florence and family on the passing of Cyril Hutchison. He passed away at Deer View lodge on Feb. 11 at the age of 87 years. His funeral service was held at the Wawota United Church on Saturday, Feb. 18th. Interment was in the Wawota Cemetery. Cyril was a very sociable person and always willing to lend a hand. He was active in the community and especially the United Church.

Natural gas equipment safety reminder SaskEnergy is asking customers to check for snow and ice buildup on natural gas equipment at homes, businesses and schools across the province. With the current warm temperatures, melting snow and ice can freeze on to natural gas meters and rooftop heating equipment overnight.

SaskEnergy’s natural gas equipment is designed to safely operate in Saskatchewan winters. However, ice build-up may affect the safe operation of the natural gas meter, or cause damage to above ground equipment.

SaskEnergy recently responded to two incidents caused by snow and ice buildup in southern Saskatchewan: rooftop heating equipment at a local school was damaged due to the weight of built up ice and snow; and a business had its large commercial natural gas meter damaged when a large chunk of ice fell from the roof.

SaskEnergy has the following winter safety tips: · Keep the meter (including regulator and shut-off valve) and rooftop equipment free of snow and ice.

Heavy amounts of snow or ice caused from sleet, freezing rain or leaking eavestrough can damage meter fittings and pipes. · Remove any built-up snow by hand only – do not use a sharp instrument to scrape or chip off the ice or snow. Do not hit or kick the meter to break the ice or remove the snow build-up. · Do not use a snow-plow or snow-blower near your meter. Make sure you know where your gas meter is located before you start your snow removal.

Each winter, SaskEnergy responds to gas leaks caused by damage to meters which occur during snow removal, damage to meters and equipment due to heavy snow or ice buildup, and ice build-up affecting the operation of the natural gas regulator. This is a safety design feature which prevents pressure from building up on gas supply lines inside a facility.
