Celebrating 30 years of volunteer service: Claudia Mullis – President of the Rebekah Assembly of Saskatchewan Kelly Running Observer Staff

Claudia Mullis of Kisbey was honoured on Saturday, Oct. 21, for her efforts in the Rebekah Assembly of Saskatchewan and being recently named President of the provincial body.

Mullis has been a member of the Rebekahs for 30 years and has enjoyed giving back to her community and province.

“Verna [Reed] asked me to join and at the time my sister-in-law – Kathy Nankivell – and I both decided we would,” Mullis said. “She was married and had young kids at the time, while I was single and had just moved back to the community to help with the family business. So, I was just back and decided to jump in.”

“We work together on different projects in the community and often will partner with the Fire Department and the Elks, as well as the Rec Centre. Many in our community wear many hats, so it makes it easy for us to all come together. We share common goals, which allow us all to bring as much as we can to our village. We can put on functions for our community and draw in others from the surrounding area as well.”

For Mullis, the decision to begin the process of becoming President of the Rebekahs was one made with a lot of thought.

“It’s a process… you begin as Warden which is like the second Vice President, then First Vice President, President, and then you stay on as Past President,” Mullis stated. “So, it’s a four year commitment.”

“I wasn’t going to, but I had always kind of wanted to and didn’t know when the right time was. My kids are grown up now and I’m my own boss here [at Nankivell Trucking], so have the ability to say when I can or can’t go because of work. So, I just felt it was the right time and I had some gentle persuasion from ladies here who wanted to see me go through.”

Deciding the time was right, she began the process, with a strong mandate, “Today is a scary time for organizations right now. The volunteers aren’t coming out like they used to… people don’t want to join anything and they don’t want the ceremony.

Many people like what we do, but they don’t want to be a member. I wanted to help ensure we’re around to assist with projects.”

“I want us to keep it viable. To keep us in the public eye. I don’t want this organization to go away because we do good work.”

Locally they have partnered with the Elks to create a scholarship for the Mentorship Program in Arcola School.

“The Elks and the Rebekahs combined $250 each to provide a $500 scholarship each year,” Mullis explained. “They partner a senior student with an elementary student. Together they read, play games, and hang out. It gives the little guys someone to look up to. Some of them don’t have older siblings and it’s a good positive program in the school, which has created more of a connection between the high school and the elementary school.”

“I know when my daughter graduated they went down to visit their buddy… and some even had them in their grad photos with them which made those

It’s really grown and the school has noticed a difference in the kids’ attitudes and school spirit. I think it helps ground the kids… they have someone in their corner.”

“It’s wonderful to be able to sponsor something so positive and the scholarship recognizes a person that has put themselves out there for another.”

Additionally the Rebekahs began to sponsor mitts in the elementary end of the school.

“A woman, an old school teacher, used to knit the mitts, but she passed away, and we decided we should continue on her legacy. So, we buy mitts and donate them to the school, because kids are always losing mitts, but they know there’s a drawer full of them if they are in need.”

“It’s the little things.”

In addition to the little things, the Rebekahs are also supporters of visual eye research and as a service club have supported many eye clinics and hospitals over the years.

“One year we were in session and the head of our group received a call, we work directly with boards who buy equipment for hospitals, and the call was by chance that it happened then; but, one of their machines had just gone down that day or the day before and they needed help. It was expensive, but, we were able to give them the funds right away to get the process going in order to get it into the hospital.”

“When my kids were younger as well they needed to have their eyes checked and while we were waiting I pointed to the plaques on the walls recognizing the Rebekahs for their donations. While the lady was testing their eyes, the kids were talking about one

of the new machines and asked, ‘Did the Rebekahs buy that too?’ She replied that they wouldn’t have it without the Rebekahs…”

Overall Mullis is very proud of everything she has accomplished in her 30 years: “It’s been a positive in my life. I’ve learned a lot of life skills, like knowing how to run a meeting and make an agenda, which is a skill… and it lets you stretch outside of your box; I was terrified of public speaking, but it’s a skill that I’ve gained confidence in and sometimes I’ll talk without having a speech written.”

“It’s an organization where if you fail, they lift you up and dust you off, and let you try again; I’ve learned so many life skills that I use in and out of the Lodge.”

The dinner held on Oct. 21, saw support of Mullis by her family including parents, children, and her brother, Kalvin Nankivell – Provincial President of the Elks Association; members of the Rebekahs and the Odd Fellows, many friends and extended family, as well as her officers for her session as President.

“They really came from all over including Weyburn and Regina, some from Saskatoon, and one lady from Prince Albert came – she was on vacation on the coast and made sure she was able to stop here for this during her holiday plans,” Mullis said appreciatively.

“There were 90 plus people out. And I’m not one that’s used to the spot light, so it was so nice to have everyone there. It was nice to have my sister-in-law, Kathy, emcee, and my brother bring greetings from the Elks. I was very happy to share that with everyone. It was very nice.”

Carlyle Elementary School hosted their annual Missoula Children’s Theatre production on Friday, Oct. 20.

The students of CES did a wonderful job acting in the Missoula Children’s Theatre. They only had one week to perfect their performance, which was held on Friday, Oct. 20.

Former NHL players reminisce at Arcola Sportsman Dinner Kelly Running Observer Staff

It was a night of storytelling and entertainment in Arcola as PJ Stock and Brian Skrudland spoke of their experiences in the NHL, while the always funny – Trevor Gowan of Big Talk Productions – asked them questions and played off of their responses.

The event was well attended in support of Prairie Place, which not only saw entertainment, but live auctions of numerous sports memorabilia, a 50/50 draw, door prizes, booze cooler raffle, and silent auction.

Auctioned off were both a PJ Stock Boston Bruins jersey and a Brian Skrudland Montreal Canadiens jersey. The live auction also included a Traeger Smoker as well as a choice between six autographed jerseys: Wayne Gretzky, Edmonton Oilers; Bobby Orr, Boston Bruins; Mitch Marner, Toronto Maple Leafs; Josh Morrissey, Winnipeg Jets; Kevin Pillar, Toronto Blue Jays; or Marcus Stroman, Toronto Blue Jays.

The auctioneer for the evening was Kelly Clark with Ritchie Bros.

A puck auction was also held, which focused on a pair of tickets and $400 spending cash to a Winnipeg Jets vs. Anaheim Ducks game on Saturday, March 23.

Stock and Skrudland (who played with the New York Rangers together at one point in their careers) entertained the crowd with a specially penned song

by Skrudland to kick off the evening, which was followed by stories of being in the NHL and playing alongside Wayne Gretzky with the Rangers.

“Wayne Gretzky is one of those guys that doesn’t do stupid things; he does so many good things for so many people. His true success is how he is off of the ice,” Stock said.

They reminisced about their time playing professional hockey as well as where they see the game today.

“My first goal, it was 11-5 for Hartford and there was 27 seconds to go, and I made it 11-6,” Skrudland laughs. “But, Mario Tremblay came skating over and jumped in my arms congratulating me on my first goal in the National Hockey League.”

For present day hockey, Stock says he likes to still see the rough aspects of the game, “I miss the animosity, the I’m going to do whatever I can for that guy not to beat me. Win or lose you wanted them to remember the moment they played you.

The game needs a little of that in it to keep it special. The cleaner parts of the game are great, but I do miss that more physical aspect.”

The night though was about ensuring Prairie Place Complex is taken care of and Skrudland thanked everyone in attendance, “Thank you for your support tonight, without you this isn’t possible.”

He went on to say that ensuring access to a rink for youth is important, not only to support passions, but to allow them a place to enjoy everything from figure skating to playing hockey to watching senior hockey.

“We’ve recently had two motor vehicle thefts in the Carlyle area,” he said. “Both vehicles have been recovered and both were torched.

Both were also easy targets for thieves, unfortunately. Lock your garages, don’t leave your keys in or near your vehicle and please, secure your property.”

Arcola School had a week full of fun activities as the students and staff celebrated Saskatchewan’s Education Week together from Oct. 15-21, which the government says is “a time to celebrate student success and recognize our dedicated education professionals across this great province.”

The theme this year put forth by the government was “Building our Future by Learning Together.”

During the week the Lions group came in to speak to the students about their guide dog programs early last week, while the next day saw school-wide Reading Buddies from Kindergarten to grade 12 participating.

Wednesday, Oct. 18, was Pay-It-Forward Day where students, staff, parents, and community members were encouraged to do small good-deeds with hopes that the recipient of that good-deed would pay-it-forward. Teacher, Judy Naylen, said the entire week went over well, but that this particular exercise was very well received and spread throughout the day.

The week ended with a free pancake breakfast for the students to enjoy as well as an RCMP Canine Presentation, which was very well received by the youth. Many raised their hands up when asked if anyone wanted to be a police officer when they grew up.

The Carlyle RCMP detachment dealt with several calls between Thursday, Oct. 12 and Thursday, Oct. 19.

911 calls/False alarms Staff Sgt. Darren Simons of the Carlyle RCMP detachment says the RCMP appreciates calls from members of the public, adding: “Please reserve the use of 911 for emergencies or what could be an emergency, such as reporting an erratic driver. For all other calls - including calls reporting or requesting information, please call 310-RCMP or during working hours, call the Carlyle detachment at 453-6707.”

Two 911 calls - one a hangup - were related to an incident at an Arcolaarea business.

One 911 call was due to a static line.

Three false alarms were the result of a new alarm system at an area business being set off in error.

Alcohol-related offences In Carlyle, an individual was fined $200 and charged with being intoxicated in a public place.

An intoxicated individual was arrested and lodged in cells until sober.

Currently, police are conducting an impaired driving investigation.

Assault/Assault with a weapon An individual in the Carlyle area was charged with assault with a weapon.

Members responded to the report of an assault in Arcola.

Assistance Members from the Carlyle RCMP detachment assisted with traffic control in the Carnduff/Oxbow area during recent grass fires there.

Members on patrol contacted the owner of a business regarding an open garage door on the business’s premises.

“We do pro-active policing,” says Staff Sgt. Simons. “We want to work with members of the community and this is an example of that.”

Breach of conditions An individual was charged with failing to comply with their release conditions.

A shop located in a rural area southeast of Carlyle was broken into.

In Manor, an unoccupied house was broken into and vandalized.

A residence in Manor was broken into.

Members are investigating a break-in in the Carlyle area.

An attempted break-in at a building in Manor is unsolved.

Criminal harassment Carlyle RCMP are investigating a case of criminal harassment in Redvers.

Drugs An investigation regarding illegal drugs is ongoing.

Fire Members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment assisted local fire departments with grass fires in the Kisbey and Wauchope areas.

Fraud The RCMP were contacted after receiving a report of an individual giving their Social Insurance Number to a caller claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). “These callers can be very convincing,” says Staff Sgt. Simons.

“However, the CRA will not contact you by phone and arrest warrants from the CRA do not exist. Please safeguard your personal and banking information and if you’re not sure who is calling you or who that email is from, check it out before you give out any information.”

Mental Health Act The RCMP conducted one investigation pertaining to the Mental Health Act during this period.

Property damage In Manor, property damage involving young people playing a game occurred.

Theft Two stolen vehicles were recovered. Both were burned.

RCMP members are investigating a case of theft under $5,000.

A large sign was stolen from an area business.

Traffic offences/Collisions Within the detachment area, two motorists were charged with driving while disqualified.

RCMP dealt with three motor vehicle in-

surance violations this week. The fine for this offence is $580. Members also dealt with four intersection-related offences. This offence carries a $230 fine.

A driver was fined $150 for failing to comply with a licence restriction.

An individual was fined $100 for failing to provide their vehicle registration.

An off-duty RCMP member from the Carlyle detachment dealt with an erratic driver.

“Just because we’re offduty doesn’t mean we won’t do our job,” says Staff Sgt. Simons. “We will deal with things.”

The report of an erratic driver by a member of the public resulted in a warning letter from

the RCMP being sent to the vehicle’s owner. “No matter who is or isn’t driving, the vehicle’s owner is responsible,” says Staff Sgt. Simons.

Two individuals received fines of $175 each for failing to wear a seatbelt.

Members issued several speeding tickets this week, including three fines of $150 each.

Police issued several tickets and warnings for: windshields in need of repair, tail light and muffler violations and insecure loads.

Uttering threats Three incidences of uttering threats were dealt with by Carlyle RCMP. One is currently under investigation and two were deemed to be unfounded.

Olympic hockey to look a little different

Well it looks as though there will be no NHL players in the Olympics. I remember hearing a little bit about how they make too much money to be leant out to the Olympics where they may be injured, thus coming home and being out of the line-up.

NHL players are also paid Kelly Running quite large sums of money to Observer Staff perform for their teams, so any time they spend overseas with Olympic competition is time they’re not at their home rink.

However, the Olympics were originally created for amateur athletes to partake in, so perhaps this is somewhat going back to the roots of the organization?

Well, not really… instead of NHL professionals playing, athletes from professional teams in Russia, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, and the Czech Republic, along with Canadian junior players, and AHL players will be representing Canada at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Canada is currently ranked number one as a medal contender for the 2018 Winter Games, with Willie Desjardins as coach and Sean Burke as General Manager.

In an article written by Tim Wharnsby with CBC, “Canada has plenty of depth playing in Russia and Switzerland. Burke and his scouts will keep an eye on the junior loops at home.”

But, will people watch Olympic hockey without the big names? I remember watching when they were in Salt Lake City in 2002… It was amazing to me to see Mario Lemieux, Jarome Iginla, Adam Foote, Theo Fleury, Martin Brodeur, Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic, and Eric Lindros all on the same team! Or in 2010 when you have Martin Brodeur, Sidney Crosby, Ryan Getzlaf, Jarome Iginla, Brenden Morrow, Roberto Luongo, Chris Pronger, Jonathan Toews, and Patrick Marleau all on the same team.

They brought a tune-in factor of their own to the Olympic Games and I do somewhat wonder if viewership will go down because of this. However, I know that Canadians love their hockey…

I’m terrible at skating, never really liked it, but I enjoy watching the sport, so despite the Olympics being worried about this initially when the NHL stated they wouldn’t be allowing players to compete, I don’t think it’s going to be as big of a deal.

People in Canada will still watch and hope that those representing our country at the competition are successful… I mean I end up watching Track and Field events just because Canadian athletes are competing.

The Olympics brings people together. There’s an instant connection when you’re all cheering for your country’s team to win and a friendly rivalry if you end up watching the Games when your team is competing against someone else’s.

So, I’ll still be tuning in to see just how our Canadians are doing and I’ll be watching both the men’s and women’s hockey.

Heart of the Moose Mountains

If we could have their job for just one day Have you ever thought who you would like to switch places with, if only for a few hours? Would you like the office belonging to a world leader? Perhaps a spot on the starting lineup of your favourite team? Or maybe you’d like to have the view of things from the boss’s desk?

No matter how much we My Outlook may like our job it’s easy to let Shelley Luedtke our imagination wander and wonder what it would be like to see the world from the vantage point of someone who is doing something else. Particularly when we are convinced they are just doing it wrong.

It seems I am continually adding occupations to the list of jobs I could never do. I see people working up on a roof in sweltering weather and I know I could never do that. I think of what my dental hygienist has to do and I know I could never do that. Or be an ice road trucker, or veterinarian or skyscraper window washer. As interesting and important as those jobs are, they just don’t fit my temperament, and I would be decidedly unsuccessful.

There are other jobs, equally unsuitable, that nonetheless get me thinking that it might be rather interesting, just for a time, to try it out. A day as the prime minister. A day as a business mogul. A day as an A-list celebrity. I could change a national policy; finance the solution to a longstanding problem; or enjoy the luxurious perks of being paid just to show up at an event. Sounds great, right?

A few years ago the story was told of a man who had worked as a security guard at Yankee Stadium for more than two decades. When the Yankees were in the World Series his friends couldn’t be faulted for being a touch envious of his good fortune, until, that is, they would have discovered his posting had him guarding a hallway at the far end of the stadium where his only view of the action was the extreme corner of right field. Although he could hear every cheer the crowd made, the only action visible from

his vantage point was a well hit ball curving just foul.

A new Communications graduate couldn’t believe her good fortune at landing a media relations account for an agency representing high profile celebrities. A few months into the job her fascination with famous personalties was over as she described her life as 18-20 hour days tracking tweets she would never post for people she would never meet.

Employees interviewed for a story about the most overrated jobs of 2016 shared some things in common. No, not dissatisfaction with salary, or bonuses or benefits. Their biggest frustration was dealing with the perception people had of their job versus the reality of how their day actually looked.

With our noses pressed up against the window peering into what we think comprises someone else’s job, we are getting a decidedly small perspective of what is actually involved. What we see is the public face of it and mistakenly think we have a sense of it.

But most of the time, the piece we see bears little resemblance to the whole. Which makes it all too easy to jump to conclusions about other people’s jobs and feel that anyone else could do it better. The jobs projected to be the hardest to fill next year are found in the areas of health care, data technology, finance and transportation.They have very different salaries and very different working conditions yet all are important. We can’t do without good people in any of them. These jobs also share something else in common. They are highly scrutinized--and often criticized. Which is why they are getting tougher to fill.

As the list of jobs I could never do continues to grow, so does my admiration for those who do them.

Key economic indicators like consumer spending, manufacturing, inflation and employment rates give a picture of the health of the economy. Key character indicators like kindness, understanding, encouragement and support give a picture of the health of the people moving that economy along. If we could have their job for just one day…we’d know. But we shouldn’t have to. We should just know. That’s my outlook.

As a suggested rule of thumb, estimate the overall project cost – then add 20 per cent as a cushion.

The good news is that home improvements (assuming they’re done well) increase the value of your investment.

The most high-return jobs to focus on are typically kitchen and bathroom, followed by painting. Renovating your basement is a great way to increase the livable space of your property or to add an income-generating apartment.

Basics like your roof and furnace also tend to yield strong returns.

If you don’t have a budget set aside for renovations, you may need to borrow a substantial sum of money. Two of the best options for borrowing large amounts are home equity loans, or home equity lines of credit. Home equity is the difference between what your home is worth, and how much you owe on the mortgage. The advantage of a home equity line of credit is that you only

pay interest on the amount you’ve borrowed – so it’s a better option for projects that stretch over several months.

Here are some additional tips and considerations to make your renos go as smoothly as possible: • If hiring a contractor, check references to ensure past clients are satisfied. Get multiple quotes, and a contract that outlines the scope of the job, plus the time estimated to complete it. Investing in a professional cost estimate will give you a realistic expectation of scope, and help you budget accurately.

• Once you decide on a contractor, be sure to put the terms of the renovation (timing, scope of work, warranties) in writing, with a signed agreement between the parties.

• Paying an architect to drawup proper plans is an initial expense that can save you money in the long run – and can potentially lead to better results.

Come prepared: Bring along any testing supplies, snacks, or medications you might need. You might also stash packets of your favourite sweetener in your wallet or purse.

Scan menus for hearthealthy options: When faced with an unfamiliar menu of food choices, look for the hallmarks of heart-health foods, which are usually good for people with diabetes,

too. Watch for foods that are labeled as “low” or “reduced” in fat, cholesterol, and sodium. Go for items that are grilled, baked, broiled, or steamed instead of fried. Ask for your dressings, sauces, or gravies on the side so you can control the portions. If available, order lower-fat varieties of your favourite condiments or go for items that are naturally lower in fat, like lemon, mustard, vinegar, pepper, garlic, and onions.

Practice portion control: These days, restaurant meals tend toward the oversized.

But you need to try to eat a portion similar in size to the one you would normally prepare for yourself. Order a halfsized portion or share with a dining partner (desserts are fun to share!). Or request a togo box to be brought out with the meal so you can pack away excess food right away.

Eat slowly: Eating slowly aids digestion and can help you to avoid overeating. When you take time to savour each bite, you not only prolong the pleasure of dinging out, you also allow your body the time it needs to notice signs of fullness.

Go easy on the alcohol: Alcohol should be consumed in moderation. If your health care provider gives you the go-ahead to drink alcohol, se-

lect spirits that are lower in carbohydrates and calories, such as light beers and dry wines. Mixed drinks should be blended with low-calorie, sugar-free mixers. Alcohol can cause low blood sugars, especially if consumed in large quantities. It is also important to note that the symptoms of intoxication (being drunk) can be very similar to those of having a low sugar reaction.

Answer: For people with diabetes, confusion about diet is common. It is important to remember that carbohydrates are vital nutrients that provide your body with energy.

Look for low glycemic index foods, which keep you feeling full longer and produce a steadier rise in blood sugar. These foods include oat bran, chickpeas, lentils, and beans. ing MVP proceeded to go five games without a goal. Is he all skate, all flash, no score?

— Can it be possible that the Toronto Maple Leafs are, indeed, the best team in the league?

Las Vegas oddsmakers, after coach Mike Babcock’s team went 6-1-0 in its first seven games, pegged the team formerly known as the Maple Laffs as the odds-on favourite to win the Stanley Cup. Hey, why not? Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip passed away and he wrote the song “50 Mission Cap” about the last time the Leafs won the Cup (1967), so perhaps there’s karma at work here.

— Can it be possible that the Montreal Canadiens are the worst team in the NHL? Wow, through eight games, the Habs had scored a grand total of 13 goals and had only one victory to their credit, a fortunate shootout win over woeful Buffalo. It’s Montreal’s worst start after eight games since 1941.

Carey Price may or may not be the best goalie in the league (he used to be, that’s for sure) but if he’s not at his absolute stand-on-his-head best on a particular night, the offence-challenged Habs seem to have little or no chance to win.

GFK would like to send out a “HUGE” thank you to all community coaches that have volunteered their time over the years with our students. Please know that your efforts don’t go unnoticed and GFK really appreciates it.

Halloween Week at GFK will kick off on Wednesday, October 25th and run until the 31st. Every day at noon there will be activities in the main entrance.

Wednesday is pumpkin decorating and hat day, Thursday is bobbing for babies and “Fake an Injury” day, and Friday is cookie decorating. Monday the 30th there will be Bean Boozeled and lastly on the 31st will be costume judging. Prizes will be given to all who participate. Happy Halloween!

Speaking of Halloween, the grade 12 class is currently going door to door selling “Spook Insurance” as a fundraiser.

Junior Volleyball playoffs are scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 9th.

We have 3 junior girls’ teams and 1 junior boys’ team traveling all across the division that day to take part in playoffs.

Good luck to all teams.

Also GFK will be hosting 1 of the junior girls’ playoffs on Nov. 9th starting at 9:30. Come out and support Cougar volleyball. Fitness Club is Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, every week from 7:45 – 8:30AM. All fitness levels are welcome. Come out and get your day started with some fitness.

Junior Boys’ Volleyball is well underway at GFK. The boys are playing 10 exhibition games throughout September, October, and November to get ready for district playoffs on Nov. 9th.

Roy Borolotto spent several days last week for Continuing Education at Ancient Spirals in Saskatoon.

Susan Davidson has returned home after spending a couple of weeks visiting Trudy Davidson and Ed Miller in Kingston, NS. Also home from Thanksgiving travels is Garry Dickson who enjoyed two weeks with FORM 2

many family members in Ontario.

Jeff Corkish, Owen and Addie, of Cottage Grove, MN spent several days in Wawota last week. While here they visited with Shirley Corkish while Jeff did some hunting.

Word has been received of the passing of Jean Decelle, a resident at Deer View Lodge. She passed away on Oct. 14 at the age of 87 years.

Her funeral service was held in Kennedy on Oct. 20.

On Oct. 5 the staff at Deer View Lodge held a soup and sandwich lunch at the Wawota Drop In. This fundrais-

er was for new blinds in the dining room. They raised $1322.00 with the Legion donation.

Another worthwhile fundraiser was held at the United Church on Sunday evening, “An Evening of Gospel Music” was a collection of many local talents performing. The funds raised were matched 4x by the Federal Government and donated to the Grain Foods Bank.

The Wawota Hotel was the scene of a haunted house over the weekend.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Art Shier on the death of his sister, Hazel Carlton of Carnduff, who had passed away Oct. 13 at the age of 83. Condolences are also extended to all other family members and friends. Funeral service was held Oct. 18 at Carn-

duff United Church with interment at the Carnduff Cemetery.

Faye Walker, Edel Cowan, Rozanne and Peter McClung were a few who attended the fall supper at Glen Ewen on Oct. 16. The food once again was very delicious and the bountiful selec-

Julie Potapinski was home for the first semester break from her university classes at Trent University, Peterborough, ON, visiting her parents Ken and Dianne, and siblings.

Gray and Edel Cowan spent the day in Regina where they visited with son, Jeff, and Gray also had a couple of appointments before they returned home.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Zander family and relatives on the death of Roy Zander, who passed away at Redvers Health Centre on Oct. 18 at the age of 92 years. Roy had farmed in the R.M. of Reciprocity #32 together with his brother Tony until they retired to Redvers in 2006. His funeral mass was held in Redvers on Oct. 24 and interment was at the Wauchope Parish Cemetery.

Leonard and Lil Patton attended the Oxbow Black Knights Volleyball tournament in Oxbow over the weekend (Oct. 21 to 22) where they watched granddaughter Cordelia who played with the Knights. The Knights were victorious and won Gold in the

tournament. Congratulations to all members of the Black Knights team.

A job well done girls.

On Oct. 22 Trevor Patton competed in the Vet Class of the SCRC Racing Club in Carlyle where he received the first place award. Congratulations Trevor.

What a terrific weekend! The Alida Haunted House opened its doors for the first time this year on Oct. 20. It is so nice to be back home at the Alida rink. It was a slow start for the event, but eventually it still a turned out to be a good evening with 37 visitors attending and enjoying their tour. Oct. 21 proved to be a much more successful night with 116 touring through the “Halls of Horror” of our Haunted House. They too commented that they enjoyed it. We also had two very special young spooks join our regular ones. They were 8-yearsold, daughters of two of our local spooks. Way to go Ainsley and Lily, you did an awesome job. If you haven’t had a chance to make the tour, don’t be disappointed. You still have an opportunity to attend as the Haunted House is open again this weekend (Oct. 27 to 29). Come on out and be

brave. See you there!

We have surely been enjoying gorgeous weather these last few days and then bang, the wind came up and one can definitely notice that the cool fall weather is here and the leaves have almost all fallen/blown off the trees now. Brrrr, fall is here. I’m still hoping that some great weather is in store for us as I still have carrots in the garden to bring in.

I must finish doing that job soon as like it or not that white blanket may cover the ground before one knows it, as we are very near the end of October. And how many times has the weather been miserable for Halloween? More times than enough (hopefully not this year). However do be careful while out trick or treating and have fun. Happy Halloween everyone!
