Cougars Volleyball off to great start in Provincial host year

The G.F. Kells Cougars girls’ volleyball team had a very successful first tournament of the season Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9, earning first place at the combined Carlyle/Arcola Mega Volley Tournament.

The G.F. Kells High School girls’ volleyball team has found success in their first weekend of play earning first place in a 12-team tournament – Mega Volley – hosted by Carlyle and Arcola. The team’s success is anticipated to build this year coalescing

with the hosting of Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) Provincials set for Nov. 17-18.

The Cougars went undefeated in the tournament which featured teams from Arcola, Rocanville, Radville, Midale, Ogema, Lampman, Estevan Intermediate, Weyburn Intermediate, Fillmore, Moosomin, and Kipling.

The team, coached by Trent Johnson and Amy Jackson, saw close battles with a few teams throughout the weekend, but earned first place in the final against Rocanville in two sets.

Tier 2 champions were the Midale Mauraders who took on the Arcola Panthers in the final.

Look to next week’s Observer for more on the Cougars hosting Provincials this November.

CES Back to School BBQ

Carlyle Elementary School staff enjoys the BBQ.

RCMP members were present to help with the Carlyle Elementary School BBQ on Friday, Sept. 1.

Carlyle Elementary School hosted a Back to School BBQ on Friday, Sept. 1, which allowed families and students to meet teachers, look around the school, drop off their school supplies, and enjoy a delicious BBQ meal.

FCC and CES Kelly Running Observer Staff

Farm Credit Canada and the Carlyle Elementary School have a mutually beneficial relationship in town. Recently this included a $1,000 donation from the FCC to CES for their Universal Snack Program and their breakfast program.

“We have a nutrition policy in our school and encourage families to follow these guidelines if they can and to help we offer snacks to all of the kids in school every day, five days a week,” Krystal Fehren-

bach, Community Education Liaison at CES, explained.

“We are very grateful to the FCC for funding this and for all of their support in the past.”

Ensuring kids are well fueled for the day by eating right is important and this is a step taken, which will aid in ensuring the best learning environment possible at CES. Vanessa Kirkpatrick with FCC – Carlyle, added that this is part of a larger company directive, “FCC donated $1,000 to multiple schools across Canada

and we were able to participate in that here in Carlyle.”

This donation came at a time as well, which involved FCC’s kick off of their Drive Away Hunger Campaign: “Today [Wednesday, Sept.

6] is also the launch of our Drive Away Hunger Campaign, which the Carlyle Elementary School has participated in with us for years,” Kirkpatrick said.

Working together is what community is about, thus the FCC and CES have formed a partnership over the years to help each other reach success.

White Bear Education Complex welcomes new staff (left) White Bear Education Complex high school teacher Don Coates (left) has returned to the school and says he has come full circle as this year, he is joining a staff which includes one of the school’s new educational assistants, Flora Littlechief (right).

“My first year teaching here, I had a group of four students and Flora was one of them,” says Coates. “Now she’s one of the staff.”

Teacher Shanna Carriere of Alida has returned to teach grades seven, eight and nine at White Bear Education Complex. “I’m coming back and it’s great, because I taught a lot of the kids I’m teaching now when they were little,” she says.

“And we’re all excited for a wonderful school year for everyone.”

Arcola welcomes new teacher

Teacher Tania Wanner’s specialty at White Bear Education Complex is Student Support. Wanner says: “I’m looking forward to a super- awesome school year here at White Bear.”

Arcola School welcomes Mike Callfas, the new Senior Math and Science teacher to their staff. Originally from Glenavon, he and his wife – who is from Kisbey – were excited to move from Pangman closer home. “I’m excited to be in a larger school,” Callfas explained. “Everyone has been super welcoming and I’ve been pretty busy, but it’s been great. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the community.”

In addition to the first week of school Callfas was aided in getting to know the community through the back to school BBQ, which was extremely well attended.

School’s back in session Kelly Running Observer Staff

School is back in session with Sept. 5 being the first day for youth and with school starting up a reminder to slow down in school zones and abide by the proper rules of the road – which should always be done – becomes quintessential in school zones.

In general the major traffic offences the RCMP deal with which can result in injuries and collisions are speed, distracted driving, failing to use seatbelts, and intersection related offences such as failing to stop or yield accordingly.

Although these are all terrible and can result in injuries and collisions at anytime it becomes pertinent for the driver to be aware of their surroundings when driving by a school where youth may not always be watching for vehicles.

Obeying traffic signs is important for the safety of everyone. Often drivers are annoyed at having to slow down while passing through school zones with speeds ranging from 25 km/hr in Arcola to 30 km/hr in Carlyle and Manor for example.

Slowing down through these zones is extremely important as youth may be taught to look both ways before crossing the street; but, often young people may forget causing them to dart out into the street after a ball during recess or are hidden behind parked vehicles until they step out into the street.

Drivers need to be alert and prepared to stop for this reason as the force of a collision, even if travelling 30 km/hr can cause severe injuries to a pedestrian. As recorded by CBC travelling at 40 km/hr creates a force of 70 percent more than 30 km/hr, while travelling 50 km/hr creates 180 percent more force than the typical 30 km/hr.

The Observer performed calculations, cross referencing numbers with an article from CBC, to find travelling across 200 metres of school zone at the recommend speed of 30 km/hr only takes 24 seconds.

At 25 km/hr the same 200 metres takes 25 seconds, while 40 km/hr achieves a time of 18 seconds and 50 km/hr results in a time of 15 seconds.

Though the time difference is minimal in the big picture, people often complain of having to slow down to such speeds through the zones. However, the difference in time it takes to stop could mean a life. At 25 km/hr a vehicle will take three and a half metres to make a complete stop. While travelling 30 km/hr it takes a typical vehicle five metres to a complete stop, at 40 km/hr it takes nine metres to stop, and 50 km/ hr takes 14 metres to come to a complete stop. This information was obtained through Forensic Dynamics Inc. which specializes in accident reconstructions.

They provide a “Stopping Distance Calculator” on their website able to generate the approximate distance needed to stop based on speed and altered by road conditions.

Fines for speeding through a school zone begin at $210 and increase for every kilometre over the limit.

Additionally, it is necessary to practice diligence when approaching a school bus either loading or unloading students. When a school bus has its stop arm out and lights flashing drivers, approaching from either the rear or the opposite direction, must stop.

“The single greatest threat to the safety of children who ride school buses is motorists who pass the bus when children are loading and unloading,” the Saskatchewan Driver’s Handbook reads.

Instructions from the handbook follow: stipulating you are to stop at least five metres (15 feet) from the bus. Vehicles are to remain stopped until the stop arm is retracted and the flashing lights are turned off.

Passing a school bus with its warning lights and stop arm out is considered a serious offence, which will result in a fine of $360.

The only instance where people on the same road as the bus may continue travelling is if the bus has stopped on a divided highway and you are travelling in the opposite direction, otherwise vehicles travelling behind are required to stop.

Distracted driving is also a concern, whether high school students driving while on their phone or parents checking messages on their phones, all ages need to remember to pay attention while driving.

Fines for driving with undue care and attention are $280.

In relation to driving while distracted ensuring the driver and all passengers are wearing seatbelts is essential. Children can be especially difficult in vehicles wanting to move around excessively in the car.

This can become a distraction to the driver, while it is also a safety precaution required to be worn in vehicles. The fine for not wearing a seatbelt is $175.

School intersections are all-way stops and failing to stop at any stop sign comes with a fine of $230.

Also ensure you’re abiding by the various parking signs surrounding schools as well to ensure safety of all involved.

So, continue to be safe on the road and remember to pay special attention in school zones.

Carter Morrison takes 8 medals A huge congratulations goes out to Carter Morrison for all of his success at the 2017 World Dwarf Games in Ontario this summer. Carter took home 8 medals for Canada (3 were GOLD)! The staff and students of GFK are all so proud to call this world champion one of our own. Picture Day is September 22 and retakes are October 24.

The Stories Behind the Songs: Nashville ‘s Banks & Barton back at The Mac Lynne Bell

Nashville singersongwriters Victoria Banks and Phil Barton treated music lovers to an evening of the stories behind their songs when they returned to Arcola’s historic MacMurray Theatre Wednesday, Sept. 6.

The duo have written numerous hits for a roster of artists which includes Johnny Reid, Jessica Simpson, Sara Evans, Chad Brownlee, and more.

The evening at The Mac was a fundraiser for local community projects courtesy of the Arcola Optimist Club, and club member Glen Lawson - who arranged the pair’s return to Arcola - says: “We’re really fortunate to get Victoria and Phil back for a show - especially because our theatre’s fully-renovated now. We were lucky enough to catch them on their way to the Canadian Country Music Awards in Saskatoon and they graciously agreed to appear in Arcola again, after their first

great concert here back in 2014.”

Banks hails from Muskoka, Ont. Now a full-time resident of Music City, the award-winning singer-songwriter told the Arcola audience: “My husband is the real star - he’s back at home in Nashville caring for our child, so I can be here tonight.”

In addition to releasing three albums, Banks has toured with artists which include Reba McEntire to Wynonna Judd. The hits she has written include Jessica Simpson’s ‘Come On Over’ and Johhny Reid’s ‘Dance with Me.’ “I was asked - along with my songwriting partner - to co-write with Jessica Simpson,” says Banks. “Usually Music Row is a Monday to Friday place and we were sort of disappointed that people couldn’t see that we were writing with Jessica Simpson, because they were flying her in on a private jet to write with us on Saturday.”

“But strangely,” she adds, smiling: “All of the men we work with just

happened to be in the office that Saturday. They were popping in, making sure we had water, asking if we needed anything...”

“Jessica’s love interest at the time was the inspiration for the song ‘Come On Over’ and it was a great song,” says Banks. “ Jessica was great. She’s a real smart cookie. She’s a lot smarter than she seems. She’s kind of got that Marilyn Monroe thing down.” “‘Come On Over’ was her first and last country hit, but it was a great song.”

“And it was really cool working with Johnny Reid. Mostly I just listened to his accent and made him sing different lines in his accent, ” smiles Banks.

Barton - who hails from rural Australia - received his coveted U.S. green card when he cowrote country singer Lee Brice’s “A Woman Like You.” “That song changed all of our lives,” Barton told the audience. “It was Lee’s first numberone and my first number-one. It sold almost

Near the end of the show, the duo delighted the crowd with a Canadianized rendition of their song, ‘Winnebego’, substituting Saskatchewan references such as ‘Estevan’, ‘bunny hugs’

and ‘the Riders game’ for lines featuring U.S. lingo and landmarks.

“We have the most fun job in the world,” says Banks. “Every day we get to write songs and go out and sing them for people like you. Thank you for being such a great audience.”

This will then be matched by the Southern Plains Co-op, which means 10¢ per litre will be donated. These funds help keep our Arena open and functioning for our family and youth in the area.

The Carlyle Sports Arena is a community facility operated by volunteers to provide recreational programs to families and youth in the area. The Arena provides the venue for learn how to skate, figure skating, hockey programs as well as 3 recreational hockey teams and of course our PureChem Cougars Senior hockey team.

The off-season the Arena is host to events such as weddings, grades, and “The Biggest Little Craft Show in Saskatchewan” Carlyle’s Homespun plus so much more.

The Arena is a non-profit organization with the goal of enriching our families lives. The Arena was built in 1967, so it annually requires updating, maintenance and repairs. The volunteer board for the arena has their sights set on repairs to the concrete, interior painting & resurfacing of the exterior of the building. Both the ice-plant and Zamboni are aging which will require attention in the near future

Death to Selfie: OneChurch.ca launches 4-Week Challenge Lynne Bell

OneChurch.ca is holding its annual 4-Week Challenge through the church’s Carlyle and Redvers campuses until Oct. 1.

This year’s theme is entitled ‘Death to Selfie’ and Executive Pastor David Baldock says, “It’s not just a campaign to quit taking so many pictures of ourselves. It’s a talking point...As we do every year, we hope to start people talking: sharing their stories, asking questions and thinking beyond themselves.”

“We’ve been doing the 4-Week Challenge for some time,” says Baldock. “We run it at the church annually and it’s fairly simple. It’s basically a challenge for people attend church for four consecutive Sundays - and we also encourage them to invite people who may not

have attended a service before.”

“It’s really a lifechanging experience and the 4-Week Challenge is intended to make it easier for people to invite people to church and easier for everyone to attend. And our services during the 4-Week Challenge are designed with newcomers in mind.”

“We also livestream our Sunday content on our website,” adds Baldock. “Our first service message is at 9:45 a.m. and our second service starts at 10:45 a.m.”

“The ‘Death to Selfie’ theme is a talking point that we address in the messages at our services for those four weeks,” explains Baldock. “Our culture here in Canada is very self-focused and a lot of us are often looking in a mirror more than what is healthy.”

There’s always narrative when it comes to restaurants in Canada deciding not to use Canadian beef and there’s always two sides to every story.

Canada has high standards when it comes to their beef production, but recent advertising tactics by restaurants promote “no hormones addKelly Running ed,” etc… Which Canadian Observer Staff cattle might receive vaccines or other shots, but the remnants of them must be out of the animal’s system before it is processed.

So, the marketing ploy in essence simply hurts the Canadian cattle industry and is based on bogus “facts.” A little research makes this evident. Additionally, when animals aren’t vaccinated, if they do get sick… then what? Is it not more humane to vaccinate and try to ensure a healthy animal than not vaccinating them and making that animal more susceptible to a disease?

The other day on Facebook, Brad Wall, called out a restaurant on their policy of attempting to source as much beef as possible from Canada, but that there isn’t enough to meet their standards.

Although he only wrote, “So most Canadian beef is below [restaurant’s name] standards? Interesting, I have always thought it’s the best beef in the world.”

It is in my opinion, but I don’t think someone of Mr. Wall’s stature should be calling out a restaurant – which is why I didn’t name it here – because those people who operate a franchise live in our communities across this province, they pay taxes, and they are not the ones making these decisions – HOWEVER – they are the ones that will pay for those decisions that higher ups make.

If a boycott of the restaurant is called for, and people follow through, you’re hurting local business. So, although I much prefer “Made in Canada” products to anything else out there because it’s supporting our home economy… at the same time we are a global economy. Money comes and goes as products are bought and sold.

So, write letters and decide not to go there as often, but don’t completely write a restaurant off because at the end of the day they are a business in a community, in a province, in Canada and maybe the world that is still a part of the community. It’s not their decision and yet they will be the ones mostly affected by it.

I agree Canadian beef is the best; I agree that the marketing ploy is ridiculous; and I agree that restaurants should use as much locally sourced products as it can… I don’t agree with calling people and businesses out on Facebook.

Go to the source. Whether it’s a problem you have like the restaurant not using as much Canadian sourced beef as you think they should, you were treated poorly at a restaurant, you’re wondering why the grass hasn’t been cut in a public place or why it isn’t being watered, etc… there’s an answer and rampaging on social media isn’t the way to deal with it.

Write a letter to the editor asking questions or go in and ask them yourself, but don’t share things without thinking through the consequences and how it could affect someone. Or, if you don’t have all the facts, you’re just inciting others with a glimpse of the whole picture.

Living with less and living well We were in the midst of a rather busy time with Canada 150 involvements when without warning our oven died. We had a repair guy take a look, and as often seems to be the case, the cost to fix it didn’t make financial sense. The time period from our oven dying to when we could replace it was several My Outlook weeks. In the interim we disShelley Luedtke covered just how many other methods of cooking we had access to and at no point did we ever have to skip a meal.

I stumbled across a book this summer by an author who spent time with several self-described “cheapskates”--people who by intention and design live on less than they earn. They are okay being called cheapskates because they don’t tie any negative connotations to the term. But rather than “how-to” or budget tips these types of books usually focus on, this author was more interested in their attitudes toward--not money--but living. There were several things the individuals and families had in common: they carried no personal debt, their homes were stylish without being overcrowded, and they indicated a high level of satisfaction with their life.

One couple said their approach to money and stuff changed when they decided to resist the urge to immediately replace something when it broke down. Not long after, her blow dryer quit working but she held fast to not going out and buying a new one until the two week period passed that they had agreed to. Then their microwave died, and again they held off replacing it. It wasn’t long before they decided they didn’t really need to have a dishwasher so they gave theirs away. The shortterm experiment has become a way of life for them as they have discovered how many things they have learned to live without.

Humorist and entertainer Will Rogers once said, “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress

people they don’t like.” This seems to be even more true today. Canadians now owe $1.70 for every dollar they earn. Let that sink in for a moment. Our spending habits mean that for every hour they spend at work, most Canadians are actually falling further and further behind, and 35% of people say they are feeling overwhelmed by their level of debt.

One study south of the border suggests half of Americans will never be free of their mortgage, yet 80% of those described as cheapskates paid off their mortgage sooner than required. Their secret? Well, it’s no secret at all. They don’t make more money than others, they simply make different decisions with what they do with their money and aren’t allowing spending on more stuff to outpace earning. Their money is used on their priorities and many report that not only are their needs met, they have enough that they are able to give to others quite regularly.

Fires, floods, hurricanes and the aftermath of an earthquake are topping our news feeds today.

The devastation is staggering. The loss of life; heartbreaking. Where do communities, cities, States and entire Islands begin in the process of trying to put the pieces together again? The relief effort is going to have to be colossal.

The idea of living well below your means can be interpreted as looking for cost-cutting measures to live on considerably less than you earn--literally, well below--or it could be more rightly perceived as leading fulfilling, great lives-that is--living on less than you earn, but living well.

There is much we could learn to live without.

Our cupboards and closets as well as our own sense of well-being would likely be far better off were we to make some of those changes. And now, as is always the case, our willingness to do with a bit less could mean big things to millions in need.

What we are able to give could be supplemented by what we are willing to give up. We can do a lot when we remember that living well below our means is simply--living well. That’s my outlook.

Five ways to encourage saving and spending habits in your children How often do you discuss money with your children?

Here are five ways you can encourage your children to develop good saving and spending habits.

Find a balanced allowance. One popular model for weekly allowance is to give your children $1 for each year of their age, meaning your eight-year-old would get an allowance of $8 a week. Of

course, one size does not fit all, and you can adjust this allowance to fit your family budget, rules and values.

Consider using a needs-based allowance worksheet to help both of you determine how much your child needs, and who will be expected to pay for what.

Reward them for saving. Back-to-school shopping presents a great opportunity to teach your children how to differentiate wants from needs. Set a firm school-shopping budget, and make a list with your children of what they need for school. Review which items are necessary versus which items are optional. Once needs are determined, help them calculate how much is left in the budget to spend on extras. Consider rewarding your children by giving them the surplus money to spend

as they choose. If you have a teenager who’s hoping to drive a new car soon, consider matching his or her savings.

Open their first bank account. Middle school is a good time to replace that savings jar with a savings account, and if your children have been saving cash for years, it can be very rewarding to take that money to the bank or credit union and open their first account with it. This is a great way to introduce them to the concept of interest, and how savings accumulate over time when left unspent.

Help them earn their own money. Earning income through hard work is one of the best ways to learn the true value of money. Depending on their age, encourage your children to earn money, whether it’s through set-

Influenza The flu is a respiratory (i.e., nose, throat, and lung) infection that can be caused by a variety of influenza viruses. Many people use the word “flu” when they actually have a cold. Although the common cold is also caused by viruses, the flu and common cold differ in several ways.

In North America, the flu almost always strikes between November and April. Up to 25 percent of the population may be infected in an average year.

Most people who get the flu will recover within one to two weeks, but some people are at risk of developing complications such as pneumonia.

On average, about 4,000 to 8,000 people in Canada die each year from complications of influenza, and about 20,000 people with the flu are hospitalized. Most of these people have other medical conditions, are seniors, or are very young children.

The main complications are secondary bacterial infections of the sinuses or lungs (pneumonia).

Influenza is contagious, which means it can be spread easily from person to person.

Viruses that cause influenza spread from person to person mainly by droplets of respiratory fluids sent through the air when someone infected with the virus coughs or sneezes.

Other people inhale the airborne virus and can become infected.

In some cases, the flu can be spread when someone touches a surface (e.g., doorknobs, countertops, telephones) that has the virus on it and then touches his or her nose, mouth, or eyes. The flu is most easily spread in crowded places such as schools and offices.

There are three families of influenza virus: A, B, and C. Type C more commonly affects ducks, geese, turkeys, and chickens, but it has also been involved in a small percentage of human cases. Type B affects humans and causes a milder disease, and it changes very little from year to year.

Type A influenza poses the most serious problems for humans. Strains of this type have also been found in birds, humans, horses, pigs, seals, whales, and ferrets.

Viruses that affect two species sometimes combine and mix-and-match genetic information to create a new strain that nobody is immune to and

for which no vaccine has been prepared.

The flu takes one to four days to incubate in humans, but infected people become contagious before symptoms appear, often just the day after the virus enters the body.

Adults remain infectious (i.e., they can spread the virus to others) for about six days, and children remain infectious for up to 10 days.

Initial flu symptoms include headaches, chills, and a cough. Symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, and muscle aches soon follow.

Other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are rare in adults, but more common in children.

The normal treatment for flu is rest and plenty of liquids.

Treatment also includes ways to prevent spreading the flu virus, such as proper hand washing, keeping common surfaces clean, and coughing or sneezing into your arm/ sleeve.

Bottom line: Learning early how to save and spend wisely is crucial to good money management, and teaches other important values. The best way to help your children build solid financial skills is through practical, age-appropriate lessons, which are relevant as they grow into young adults.

Canada’s Shapovalov wows the tennis world

Bruce Penton Canada has a new sports star with a name that looks like a combination of French and Russian.

Denis Shapovalov burst onto the professional tennis scene like a bolt of lightning, wowing the tennis world in August with an upset victory over world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in Montreal’s Rogers Cup, going on to lose in the semi-final, and then becoming the youngest player in almost 30 years to reach the fourth round at the U.S. Open in New York in September. He lost in the round of 16, but he won thousands of fans on both sides of the border.

Shapovalov is only 18, with long shaggy blond hair that flows out from around his Nike baseball cap, worn backwards, to give at first glance the impression that he’s an Avril Lavigne Sk8er Boi. He joins Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard atop the list of Canadian tennis stars to watch. Retired tennis great Mats Wilander gave the highest praise to Shapovalov, calling his talent a combination of ‘Federer and Nadal’. Former U.S. great Brad Gilbert

says the sky’s the limit for Shapovalov, saying he could potentially be the No. 1 player in the world. The master of nicknames, Gilbert calls the Canadian star ‘Shapshot’ — merging part of the youngster’s name with a takeoff on one of the most famous hockey movies.” How Canadian, eh? The kid, however, prefers ‘Shapo’.

But who is Denis Shapvalov and what’s his backstory?

The tennis world just didn’t pop open a can of yellow balls, crack one open and see Shapovalov roll out. He has worked his way up, reaching new mountains ever since he was 13. At 16, he won the Wimbledon junior singles and teamed with Felix Auger-Aliassime to win the U.S. open junior doubles. The tennis world knew all about Shapovalov long before Sammy Sports Fan in Canada started to pay

attention.

Shapovalov was born in Israel but moved to Canada with his parents when he was one year old. His mother, Tessa, who runs a tennis club in Vaughn, Ont., remains one of his cocoaches.

He might not have McDavid or Bautista name recognition quite yet, but he’s gaining.

People are stopping him in airports, seeking autographs, and he’ll undoubtedly have votes cast in his favour when Canadian sports reporters determine our country’s outstanding athlete of the year.

After starting the year ranked 250th in the world (he was 1,162 at the end of the previous year), Shapovalov has risen to the top 70. He’s heading toward the top — with a bullet, just like his serve.

White Bear Education Complex

School elders are important members of the White Bear Education Complex community. We always raise our flags to honour our reserve, Treaty 4 territory and our country. The flags symbolize our belief in ourselves and our First Nation culture. We strive to build on our First Nation identity by supporting our traditions and teaching our languages.”

Everyday Impact: Joanne Merkel’s 41 years at Moose Mountain Lodge Lynne Bell

Carlyle’s Joanne Merkel officially retired from her position as cook at Moose Mountain Lodge. For 41 years, Merkel has made a positive impact on the facility’s residents, her fellow staff members and the families of the hundreds of people she has served. And in addition to preparing thousands of meals, Merkel served up kindness and compassion every day.

“I’m a firm believer that if (residents) want soup for supper, let them have soup for supper,” she says. “If they want eggs, let them have eggs. I’m happy to do that. And I think it’s nice because this is their home and should be treated as such.”

Merkel grew up in Carlyle and has worked at Moose Mountain

Lodge since it opened even before there were any residents.

“I started in 1976,” smiles Merkel. “I saw an ad in the paper for a job at the new nursing home. I applied and my sister Shirley takes some of the credit for me getting hired, because she helped me with my application.”

“I was on cloud nine when they phoned me to tell me I got the job.”

“When I first started at the Lodge, I had only planned to stay for a few years. After that, I was planning on moving to Moose Jaw where my sisters were, but 41 years later...”

“When I first started to work here, Moose Mountain Lodge was new and there were no residents living here at first. But two days after we all started work, the residents started to come.”

“For a lot of us back then, it was our first job working in a nursing home,” she says. “We were all so happy to be here and the residents were, too.”

Merkel says some aspects of life at the Lodge have changed over the years.

“I remember when I first started working in the kitchen that all of our produce was fresh,” she says. “I had some cauliflower and I didn’t know how to cut it up or cook it, so one of the residents helped me.”

“Back then, the residents could help in the kitchen and set the table.

The director of care told us: ‘This is their home and they should be able to treat it as such.’”

“We had 36 residents then and 42 now,” says Merkel. “In 1986, there was a big change.

“The hardest thing to get used to was that things became more controlled with regards to what people were allowed to do - and the (added) paperwork.”

“What hasn’t changed is that all of the staff - no matter what their job - all work together,” she says. “Everyone. And for the most part, we all get along.”

“And over the years, my job was made a lot easier by the many volunteers who help out at the nursing home, too.”

“I really liked the people I worked with, the residents and their families,” she says. “I’ve seen three generations from the same family as residents here.”

“With so many residents, when you lose a resident, you lose a family, too, because of course, they stop coming to the Lodge to visit.”

“My last day of work was August 31,” says Merkel. “It was like any ordinary day, really. It was a particularly busy day and except for people coming up to say goodbye, I kept having to remind myself it was the last day.”

“It was very nice, though,” continues Merkel. “I got a cake and flowers from the staff and other people were kind enough to recognize my retirement.”

“My husband Jim, my daughter and her husband, my granddaughter and my sisters all took me out for supper and I received flowers there, too.”

“I don’t think of myself as special,” she says.

“I just really liked working here and I never dreamt I’d get the job.”

“I like making people happy and I hope I’ve done that.”

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls from Friday, Sept. 1 to Thursday, Sept. 7.

Fatality “This week, a fatal traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck occurred in our detachment area,” says Staff Sgt. Darren Simons of the Carlyle RCMP. “Tragically, the operator of the motorcycle passed away as a result of their injuries.”

“We have offered Victims Services to the occupants of the pickup truck.”

“This is a difficult part of the job for all emergency services as well as those who come across the scene of an accident, especially when there are injuries – and when accidents involve fatal injuries, even more so. Along with local members and local emergency responders, an RCMP member from Estevan was at the scene as well to assist with accident reconstruction.

I am very proud of how our team responded, but equally sad that an individual lost their life.”

“We extend our sympathy to the family of the victim and if there is anything the RCMP can do to assist, please contact us.”

911/FalseAlarms Two 911 calls were misdials – one the result of a child playing with the phone.

One alarm went off due to an animal being inside a building, while two alarms in Carlyle went off in error.

Animal call(s) A member of the RCMP Traffic Division responded to a call regarding cattle running loose on a highway. The member located the owner of the livestock and the situation was resolved.

Alcohol-related offences An intoxicated individual was arrested in Carlyle and lodged in

cells until sober.

Assistance Members provided assistance to Child and Family services this week.

RCMP members from surrounding detachments sent “at least two contingents” to British Columbia to assist with the forest fires in that province, according to Staff Sgt. Simons.

“Members from our own detachment went to assist at Pelican Narrows to help with the evacuation efforts there,” says Simons. “One of our members rescued four puppies who were abandoned as a result of the fires and they were all adopted before he returned home.”

“Several of our area traffic members went to Onion Lake to assist with a situation there.

And another member went to Stony Rapids to assist in that community” he adds. “Not only are we helping out our neighbours, but our members are also gaining experiences which are invaluable to their development as police officers.”

“In some places, our members will see more in a week than they would see here in a month, so it’s all excellent experience, which will only benefit our community.”

Assault An assault in the Carlyle area in which an individual produced a firearm is still under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. One person was arrested.

An assault which occurred in the Carlyle area is still under investigation by RCMP. Breach of release conditions/Court Members responded to a report about an individual breaching their release conditions.

This proved to be unfounded.

Three individuals did not appear in court as required and as a result, face additional charges.

Break and enter Police are currently investigating a break-in which occurred at an Arcola business, in which the doors of the business were smashed.

Lost property RCMP were able to return lost property to the owner. “If you find something valuable, please bring it to us and we will do our best to find the owner of the property and return it to them,” says Staff Sgt. Simons.

Mental Health Act Members dealt with two Mental Health files this week.

Mischief Police are currently investigating a situation in which an individual walked into a home when the owners were in residence. This person was not known to the residents of the home.

Members are investigating a report of someone sneaking into a residence in the Carlyle area.

An intoxicated individual was causing problems in a residence.

Members resolved the situation.

An intoxicated individual was removed from a residence by RCMP and lodged in cells until sober.

Members charged an intoxicated person in a residence with mischief.

Theft A vehicle reported to the RCMP as stolen was found to be repossessed.

A truck reported as stolen to the RCMP was found to be loaned to a friend of the vehicle owner.

Traffic offences/ Collisions A motorist avoided colliding with a deer, but rolled their vehicle.

A driver was fined $280 for using their cellphone while driving.

Members dealt with one motor vehicle insurance violation. The fine for this offence is $580.

RCMP issued several speeding tickets this week, with fines reaching $200.

Police dealt with several other traffic offences, including: seatbelt violations, drivers operating a motor vehicle without a valid licence and inspection tickets, including improper tint on vehicle windows.

RCMP members responded to two reports of erratic drivers within the detachment area.

Members responded to two reports of vehicles parked on the shoulder of the road.

Unlawful in a dwelling house Members responded to a call in which an individual was alleged to be found unlawful in a dwelling house.

Uttering threats Carlyle RCMP responded to a report of an individual uttering threats.

By Linda Wegner In a recent article I began by quoting one of my most frequent prayers these days: “O Lord, please send rain.”

Thankfully we’ve had a bit, not a lot but enough to cool the temperatures and slightly decrease the risk of fires in our area.

As thankful as I am for the moisture, I’m also keenly aware of those who are crying out for relief from rain and wind.

I usually avoid commenting on current events but I can’t ignore the horrific storms that have battered North America and the world these past few days and weeks. From Asia to Italy, to India to the U.S.A., and even beyond, storms of magnitudes not recorded in decades have battered and smashed these lands and the people living there. Words like “worst in a century” and “horrific quake” are being used to describe the conditions; then, indescribable for even the most erudite person, are the numbers of

people killed, injured and stripped of earthly assets. Whose heart isn’t touched with this kind of suffering? If ever we had the responsibility of caring for and praying for others going through these monster storms, it’s now.

Suffering is awful, sorrow sometimes seems eternal, and just because we believe in Christ doesn’t make us immune to natural disasters; what ever the sources of these storms, no one in their paths is unaffected by the consequences. We’ve all got the responsibility to do what we can to help.

Watching and listening to the news, I’m reminded of so many friends and neighbours who’ve suffered other kinds of losses. While these don’t get international media attention, they also need our love, our care and our prayer support.

“And this is what God says we must do: Believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another.”

Joyce Taylor, former cook, has been renewing acquaintances. New faces on the staff are Judy Skiba, bath lady, and Chelsey Beutler from Kola.

Archie Millar visited everyone and had two good meals. Jim and Carol Adair visited with Alan. Other visitors were Linda Mulligan, Joe and Shirley Blaise and Theresa Lamontague.

There was a nice crowd that attended the bridal shower on Saturday, September 9 at Alida Hall in honor of Emma Boutin, brideelect of Dakota Rose. She received many unique and useful gifts. Their up-coming wedding will be held in October at Cantal with a dance at the Redvers Recreation Centre.

Hopefully you were able to watch some of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling Tour Challenge this past week which was being held in Regina. The semi-finals and finals were on the weekend (September 9-10) and there was some excellent curling occurring throughout the event.

The finals saw the Brad Gushue team winning the men’s event and the Val Sweeting team winning the women’s event.

The next Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event will be occurring this October. Keep watching the sports channels.

The students have now had almost a week of studies under their belt and their teachers have probably settled everyone into a routine that will move them right along and before one knows it another year will be done. Good luck everyone in the new school year and do keep us posted on school happenings as well, always interesting to see the progress being made throughout the year whither its studies or sports.

We can finally state

that the harvest at our farm finally is done, now only a small field of wheat is left at Tim’s, but the darn stuff doesn’t seem to want to go, a little on the tough side, and with the humidity so high yesterday it was another day of waiting. Hopefully they can get going today and we can say ALL done and get combine ready for storage for another season. What great harvest weather we’ve had this fall, it was a long steady go with no ‘rain’ breaks which was a good thing and by the sounds of upcoming forecast that may come to an end later this week. So hopefully there will be many that will see the end of harvest in the next few days.

Speaking of weather – I’m so glad that I live where I live – at least we’ve never had hurricanes in the area – my heart goes out to those in Texas and also Florida – what devastation they are looking at.

We may get the odd tornado to deal with, but that’s nothing like what these poor people have to deal with.

The annual Kenosee Lake Terry Fox run will take place this Sunday, Sept. 17. Registration will take place at 9 a.m. in Club 19, while the run will begin at 10 a.m.

The run has been ongoing for 37 years at Kenosee, one of the current run organizers – Julie Adams – explained.

Her sister, Shelby, and her are in their second year of facilitating the run.

“The Terry Fox family are family friends of my mom’s so we have a personal connection, but cancer affects so many people,” Julie stated.

“It’s a noble cause to raise money for. Everyone knows someone, family or friends, that have been affected, so it’s just a small part we can do to help.”

It will be five kilometres, which Julie says, “is throughout the Moose Mountains and it’s a beautiful, scenic fall route.”

This year at the event, merchandise is available again, but can be paid for via Visa/ Mastercard instead of just cash as it has been in the past.

In 1980 Terry Fox made history with his Marathon of Hope. He had thought he beat cancer and was determined to raise money for research and to help others with the disease.

Additionally, he wanted to change people’s mentalities surrounding disabilities, there were no limits.

Fox ran through pain at first, but when he was about 20 miles

from Thunder Bay, the pain became too much for him, he couldn’t run through it anymore, and asked his friend to take him to the hospital.

Cancer, what he thought he had beaten when doctors amputated his leg, had spread to his lungs. He vowed to fight this too and he told people, “I don’t think this is unfair. That’s the thing about cancer. I’m not the only one. It happens all the time, to other people.

I’m not special. This just intensifies what I did.

It gives it more meaning. It’ll inspire more people. I could have sat on my rear end, I could have forgotten what I’d seen in the hospital, but I didn’t.”

The young man passed away one month before his 23 birthday and in his memory as well as for loved ones fighting cancer, over 300,000 people took part in the first ever Terry Fox Run.

Granted, a certain amount of dust in the air is normal during the harvest season. But, the lingering dry weather has meant that folks are ‘kicking up’ much more dust than usual. Added to that is the significant amount of smoke from fires burning both to the north and west of us.

Consequently, it’s been noticeably hazy around our area this past while.

The Labour Day Long Weekend was a time for celebration for

those who belong to Albert and Denise Istace’s Family Tree. Around 60 people attended the Istace Family Reunion; which was held at the Mother Theresa Center at Kenosee Lake. Stew Lawrence was the oldest family member in attendance. One-year-old Donavan (Great-GreatGrandson to Albert and Denise) was the youngest.

There are several events coming up this month. The Annual Terry Fox Run will take place on Sunday, Sept.

17th. Registration will take place at the Ken-

nedy Friendship Center beginning at 1:00 pm.
