We Will Remember Them Lynne Bell

-Laurence Binyon *** Carlyle joined communities from throughout the local area and from across Canada in honouring the nation’s fallen soldiers on Saturday, Nov. 11 - Remembrance Day. The Remembrance Day service was presented by the Carlyle Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and was held at the Carlyle Elementary School gym and concluded with a wreathlaying ceremony at the Cenotaph.

The somber traditions marked this year’s Remembrance Day service: the marching of the colours, the Last Post (played by Jesse Twietmeyer), the reading of ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Diane Twietmeyer, the prayers and scripture readings, the anthems, the laying of wreaths, the parade to the Cenotaph and the two minutes’ silence.

This year’s speaker was Reverend Dan MacNaughton of the Carlyle Full Gospel Church.

MacNaughton - an interim minister who hails from Langley, B.C. said he prepared for his speech by doing some local research.

“Last week, I went by the local cenotaph, across from the hockey arena,” he said. “The cenotaph has two brass

plaques inscribed with names. It is a visual reminder of the 24 young men that gave their lives in the Great War of 19141918 and the 19 young men in the War to End All Wars, 1939-1945.”

“As I have only been in your community for the past six months, I hardly recognize the family names, let alone know the stories behind each name,” he explained.

“What I do know about your community, and so many other communities across our great nation, is that these young men gave their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms of today.”

A self-described history buff, MacNaughton gave a brief overview of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, describing it as, “A decisive battle that was won in Northern France.

170,000 Canadians fought that day. 3,598 were killed and another 7,004 wounded.”

“In a single day.”

“Their sacrifice and heroism in the face of incredible danger was a nation-defining moment,” he said.

“Upon reflection of the price paid at Vimy Ridge and other battles such as Passchendaele, I believe the soldiers of that era would be appalled at the way our generation have abused our freedoms, and are now allowing others to come into our country and make demands on our society that they were unable to achieve in their native homeland.”

“However, there is a

generation that live today in freedom because of their sacrifice,” continued MacNaughton.

“Last Sunday after service, I was approached by a member of my congregation who was born in Denmark in 1946.

He was born a free man and not a Nazi because young men left Canada, travelled thousands of miles, first by train,

then by boat to defeat the advancing armies of Hiltler.”

“The Birger Rasmussen family are members of our community today because of the sacrifices of previous generations.

Birger said; ‘We are so thankful that the Allies came to deliver us from our enemy!’”

MacNaughton stated that those who sacrificed their lives did so for: “Freedom from oppression; freedom of speech, even the right of criticism; freedom of assembly; freedom of religion, whatever your choice and freedom of movement across our country – locally and inter-provincially.”

“Each name inscribed on those brass plates represents a young man and his unfulfilled dreams,” said MacNaughton.

“We remember them.”

GFK holds Remembrance Day Service

Gordon F. Kells High School and Carlyle Elementary School held a Remembrance Day Service on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Here the colour party enters – marking the beginning of the ceremony.

Grade 12 students recited “In Flanders Fields” during the Carlyle schools’ ceremony.

Students bring a wreath up to the front to lay in honour of the soldiers that served and those that are currently serving.

Jesse Twietmeyer was a guest to the service. He trumpeted The Last Post and Reveille to mark the two minutes of silence given during the service.

Sask Internet Child Exploitation Unit to present in Carlyle Dec. 6 Kelly Running Observer Staff

Wanting your child to be happy and healthy comes with ensuring their safety. In this day of interconnectedness it means ensuring they are using technology and the internet responsibly.

Youth are still developing and understanding the repercussions of their actions, so when it comes to the instant world of the internet, SnapChat, and other apps kids may not always make the best choices. It’s important for parents and guardians to be able to help educate their kids in using technology.

Knowing how to navigate the instant world of today comes with realizing the need for help in first educating parents/guardians first and then approaching youth, so a meaningful conversation can happen at home regarding the issue.

Thus, principal of Carlyle Elementary School, Tyler Fehrenbach, decided to take action and has been in talks with local RCMP about the best course of action in helping parents approach the ever evolving age of technology.

“I contacted Darren Simons and Jamie Barnett [at the local detachment] to ask what we can do to educate parents,” Fehrenbach explained. “I use technology, but there are so many apps out there I know I’m not keeping up with them all.”

“You can hand a kid a phone and say ‘be safe’ or ‘be smart,’ but what does that really mean and how can we make sure they are being safe and smart?”

Together they approached Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation Unit – the Sask ICE Unit – and they will be in Carlyle on Wednesday, Dec. 6, to present from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Elementary School. The meeting is for any parent or guardian in the area interested and is not limited to Carlyle Elementary School parents – in an effort to help everyone the Carlyle Elementary School Community Council, RCMP, and Victim Services are focused on bringing this information to southeast Saskatchewan.

“As a parent we’re supposed to educate, to provide knowledge on this subject, but we don’t all have the knowledge to do so,” Staff Sergeant Darren Simons stated. “Parents don’t understand the internet, social media, etc… as well as they need to in order to have those conversations. As a parent and police officer I can say the Sask ICE presentation is very rewarding and there is a lot of good information there.”

The Sask ICE Unit has presents around the world and are a joint task force consisting of Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert Police Services alongside the RCMP. “These people are experts,” Simons adds. “They have the most comprehensive knowledge and ex-

With the weather turning to winter, Staff Sergeant Darren Simons reminds drivers to be safe during the winter months on the road.

“Be prepared for the weather when you head out,” Simons stated.

“Make sure your phone is fully charged, take a cell phone charger with you, have a candle and something to light it within the vehicle, and a blanket. In the event of a blizzard, just because you need help doesn’t mean it will be able to be there immediately, so remember to be safe and plan ahead.”

The Carlyle detachment of the RCMP responded to a variety of calls between Thursday, Nov. 2, and Thursday, Nov. 9.

911 calls A 911 call originating from a cell phone, which was a hang up is being investigated as it has occurred from the same number multiple times.

Animal call Stray dogs were reported in Carlyle.

Assault Two individuals were involved in an altercation. One of the individuals was charged with assault and was also charged with uttering threats to a police officer.

Assistance Debris on the highway was reported. Patrols were made and members removed the danger.

A well-being check was conducted in the area.

Criminal harassment There was a report of criminal harassment in the Carlyle area. The investigation is ongoing.

Driving infractions An individual was charged with driving with undue care and attention when they lost control and hit the ditch.

An individual was fined $580 for not having a registered vehicle.

One intersection offence occurred and the individual was charged $230.

A speeding high this week of $136 was recorded.

RCMP were told about a dangerous vehicle on the road hauling a sprayer at night without proper safety measures.

Members were unable to locate it.

An individual who was driving while suspended was stopped by RCMP. Numerous inspection notices were issued including for tail lights, licence plate lights, remove window tint, and a broken window whose owner was issued a motor vehicle inspection notice to ensure the vehicle is road worthy.

A warning was issued to an individual for failing to properly secure their licence plate.

Three minor traffic collisions were reported during this time.

False alarms

Members responded to alarms in Carlyle (2) and Wawota (1). They were determined to be false alarms.

Indecent communications Currently under investigation in the Carlyle area is a report of indecent communications.

Mischief A window was shattered in the Carlyle area and it was believed to have been a gun shot by those reporting the matter. RCMP were unable to determine how the window was shattered.

There was a dispute between neighbours at Kenosee Lake.

Three youth were located after 9 p.m. in Manor. The youth were identified as RCMP determined it was rather late for how old the youth were.

Property damage was reported in the Carlyle area.

Drug infractions A drug investigation is ongoing in the Carlyle area.

Firearm offences An individual was given a warning for the unsafe storage of two firearms in their vehicle.

The individual was charged with having an unregistered vehicle.

Uttering threats Members were made aware of a situation in which an individual reported threats being uttered towards them.

RCMP investigated, but determined the situation to be unfounded.

Joe and Jean Brisbois and Clinton of Winnipeg travelled to Melfort recently. While there they visited with Jean’s cousin, Marg Fraser and her husband, Ken. It had been almost 40 years since they had been together.

Congratulations to the three recipients of the Legion awards this year. The Wawota Royal Canandian Legion Branch #113 presented Olivia Lawrence with the poppy fund bursary.

Olivia is attending the U of R taking journalism.

Skylar de Roo who is taking a business course at Polytech in Moose Jaw was awarded a Legion scholarship. Katie Husband received the Sask. Command of the Canadian Legion scholarship. She is taking Agribusiness in Saskatoon. All of these girls have family members who served in the armed forces!

Knelsen on the birth of a son on Nov. 6. He weighed 7 lbs 13 oz. and has been named Joshua Sawyer Kopacz Knelsen.

The United Church Fall supper was well attended this year! Not only is it a good fund raiser but it gives everyone in the area a chance to meet and enjoy a meal and some fellowship. I thought that it was the last of the season but I see Carlyle has one on Nov.19th.

The Remembrance service in Wawota was well attended as usual.

It is so good to see so many young people attending and taking part. “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we shall remember them”.

Word has been received of the passing of Bert Shire, a one time resident of the Kelso/ Langbank area. He passed away on Oct. 20 at the age of 92 years. He was married to the late

Ruth Fisk. A graveside service was held on Oct. 26 at Kelso. A luncheon was served in Langbank.

Doing the news is like a yoyo! Some weeks there are lots of happenings and several people share their comings and goings. Other weeks not so much. Last week I was really struggling and then I wondered why I do this every Monday morning? I hate to always be complaining and asking for help but without your help I believe my time is limited.

Upon looking back I realized that it was the week of Nov. 18 to 25, 1983 that I started contributing news to the Kipling Citizen. My first column included Sheldon Wilson’s birth, the passing of Franklin Davis, Dr. Choo Foo attending his brother’s wedding, Morris and Marn Mowbray’s 60th wedding anniversary and Betty and Val opening the, “Flower and Gift Shop”.

Carlyle and Area’s 2017 Toy Drive: It’s about the kids Lynne Bell

Jenn Sedor of Cornerstone Family and Youth says this year’s Carlyle and Area Toy Drive may be the most challenging one yet.

“This is the third year that CFY has partnered with The Bargain! Shop and other area businesses and it seems that the need is growing,” says Sedor.

“When economic conditions are challenging, families really feel the effects and when things improve, it often takes a while for them to catch up.”

“Regardless, need is an ongoing thing and we don’t want anyone to be left out at Christmas, especially if they’ve already had a hard year.”

The Bargain! Shop’s Shannon Macleod agrees, adding that The Bargain! Shop has upped their fundraising game with a special event planned for Saturday, Dec. 9, with details to come later.

“I think this will be the year with the most need ever and it’s a real local effort,” says MacLeod. “It’s our third year and we’ve been able to provide a little bit of Christmas to families from throughout this southeast corner of Saskatchewan.”

Sedor says the Toy Drive aims to provide a stocking stuffer and a gift from Santa to each young recipient.

“We gladly and gratefully accept donations of unwrapped gifts or cash donations that will allow us to give a little Christmas to boys and girls from birth to age 17,” says Sedor. “The age group we usually get the most gifts donated to are for children from three to five years of age.”

“I’ve been asked for suggestions for gift ideas for pre-teens and teens and it can be as simple as hygiene stuff, such as shampoo, combs and brushes.

Mittens and sweaters are good and so are gift cards, if you’re unsure about a size or what to buy.”

“Last year, we provided gifts for kids from Carlyle, Arcola, White Bear, Kenosee, Kisbey, Ochapowace, Redvers, Alida, Alameda, Oxbow, Manor, Lampman, Kennedy and Wawota,” says Sedor.

“Our application deadline to receive a guaranteed gift is Friday, Dec. 8,” adds Sedor. “But we’ll do our very best if someone’s left out.”

“We make it work,” she smiles.

Sedor stresses that the application process is confidential. “We ask that people apply through organizations such as their church, band office, school, local family centre or other participating organization.”

“Then the organization can email me at cornerstoneprograms@sasktel.net or if they prefer, get in touch with Shannon MacLeod at The Bargain! Shop in Carlyle.”

Shop in Carlyle are on board to accept donations of new unwrapped gifts or cash donations. In the past, some companies have made a contribution to us in lieu of sending out Christmas cards.”

“We’ll be holding our final Wrap Party later in December and people can volunteer to help us out there, too,” she adds.

“We’ll be putting up a tree at the front of the store and accepting gift and cash donations for the Toy Drive,” he says. “There are kids in need at Christmas and if we can do our part to make it a little bit brighter for them, then we’re happy to do it.”

MacLeod agrees, adding: “It’s a real community effort and it’s all about the kids. We’ve had people come in the store who have donated 50 cents every time they come in and it all adds up. Whether people donate 50 cents or fifty dollars, they are giving from their heart and helping their neighbour, which is what Christmas is all about.”

“Because it’s such a private process, sometimes you don’t know how the Toy Drive impacts people,” says Sedor. “But last year, I got a phone call from a mom who called to thank us. She burst into tears, but it was really heartwarming to make that connection in our community.”

The lessons sport brings

It’s been six seasons of coaching junior volleyball and each year the teams have been determined and play their hearts out.

When people ask how a team is doing they are typically wondering if they’re winning games. I love winning, I don’t know who doesn’t like winning more than losing; but, winning isn’t everything. And yes, depending what Kelly Running article you read, I’m either a Observer Staff Xennial or a whiny Millennial.

However, there is so much more to sport than winning and losing.

Playing a team sport teaches you dedication, responsibility (here are your jerseys if you don’t have them with you, you don’t play – never once has a kid forgotten a jersey), time management, respect, how to work hard for something, and how to be a team player as well as how to be happy for others.

Someone made a comment to me about how I seem to be everywhere when it comes to volleyball in the area… coaching juniors, going to watch when ladies I’ve coached in the past ask me to a tournament, coaching the club teams in Arcola, volunteering to help with Provincials being hosted in Carlyle this year, ref’ing, and playing ladies volleyball too.

I often tell kids how important it is to diversify and “fill different pockets,” as if you fill one pocket too much you can come to be tired and sick of whatever it is you might be doing.

I absolutely love the sport though. I love playing it; but, it’s also one of the sports I enjoy watching… and it’s warmer than sitting in the rink. I’ve gotten to know different families and different kids through coaching and ref’ing over the years, which has actually come to be one of my favourite things is seeing their growth. Whether I’m coaching them or have coached them or they’re simply kids I’ve coached against, it’s fun watching good volleyball and seeing their progression in the sport.

The other day my kids – every season those I’m coaching become my kids – hosted their junior playoffs in Arcola. They played hard and had success throughout the day, finishing first place after the round robin. In one set they won, they had been down by about eight points and managed to turn it around to win that game. It was awesome getting to watch them succeed and use the skills we had been giving them throughout the season.

Pass, set, hit, block, dig, chase – it was epic!

They may be in grades seven through nine, but they were playing volleyball and it was so great to watch.

I challenged them fairly early in the season. I told them we were going to run a system and taught them their rotation, the next time on the court was in a game and I gave them the goal of getting their rotations down. I figured it would be a little ugly to start off with, since we had only spent one practice on it, but they were immediately smooth. Just a couple of reminders and they were playing volleyball; no rookie one and over type of ball, real volleyball with the pass, set, hit. All while using something they had just learned. They were determined. They had set a goal and reached it.

Our goal for playoffs was to win it, but second place is extremely commendable and looking back on the season overall the girls were very successful in bettering themselves.

We had underhand servers become overhand servers, kids that will be jump serving in the very near future at only grade 7, blockers making a difference at the net, setters who’s opponent parents were complimenting the setters’ hands, and we were pretty loud – I don’t know if any team is ever loud enough, but they were pretty darn loud.

It was another great season and I feel honoured to have gotten to coach such a wonderful group of young ladies again at Arcola School.

Just wait until you hear what happened Put the coffee on and pull up a chair. You’ll never guess what happened to me. Okay so it all started when...

No matter the topic, we’ve got something to say because we’ve all been there. Don’t get us started.

No sooner is an engagement announced than the couple My Outlook is overwhelmed with wedding Shelley Luedtke mishap stories. Or say something about credit cards, or co-workers or travel. It’s easy to get a group commiserating about recent experiences. We all have tales to tell.

Those planning weddings are likely less than comforted to hear about bouquets that fell apart or photographers that failed to show up on time, but still we tell the story. And even though flights take us to great destinations, and hotels try to sort things out if there are problems, we feel the need to share (mingled among some highlights) the elements of the vacation that didn’t go as planned.

It’s not that we necessarily want to focus on what went wrong, it’s just that those make for more interesting stories--or at least stories we think will be more interesting to others. We might be right.

Picture pouring the second or third cup of coffee to dialogue consisting of, “So I used my credit card at the store today.” End of story. Or, “We got that new project done at work and everyone contributed equally and everyone appreciated everyone and”... yawn.

Musings of everything that went right don’t make for compelling stories or items of interest and certainly no moments of humor. So we hear instead about the lost luggage and slow restaurant service, the annoying co-worker, or the wedding where we

ate cold entrees.

The sharing of those mishaps and annoyances can be looked at as simply chit-chat, but there is another level on which this occurs that has more serious consequences. Think about the conversations in which people talk about their hospitals. While it may have been frustrating to wait and subsequently have to adjust our day because of time spent in a waiting room, at the end of it all there was care and treatment. Yes, people have accounts of things going terribly wrong, but most of us have received the procedures and medications we have needed, while more than 400 million people around the world are without access to even basic medical care.

Sure we can be annoyed by disruptions to our water supply, or find ourselves inconvenienced by power outages, yet 1 in 9 people we share this planet with do not have safe water, 1 in 3 lack access to a toilet and 1.3 billion have no electricity.

Or take part in conversations where people share their recent experiences eating out. Restaurant owners and employees work hard to provide customers with a satisfying experience, but many are all too eager to complain about the service, the food or the atmosphere. Tonight 815 million people will end their day as they began--hungry.

We all have stories to tell and things to share about humorous, entertaining or outright frustrating things that have happened to us. And while it might garner us more attention to one-up the person sitting next to us, let’s be sure that in the process we are not undermining those who may not have had the perfect set of circumstances leading up to the moment in which we crossed their path. While we all have narratives of things that went wrong in airports, restaurants, stores, resorts or waiting rooms, most of the time things go very, very right. That’s my outlook.

Practical Money Matters:

Simple ways to make your appliances last longer ‘Tis the season for overflowing refrigerators, never-ending loads of laundry and hopefully visiting Carla Hindman family who Director of Financial Education, Visa Canada will lend a hand. Many people ask their appliances to work a little harder than normal during the holidays, and proper maintenance throughout the year might be the key to avoiding an untimely breakdown.

Here are a few maintenance tips for refrigerators, dishwashers, laundry machines and dryers. Each of these major appliances has an average lifespan of 10 to 13 years and you might want to start budgeting for your next purchase around the nineyear mark.

There are many factors that contribute to a particular machine’s lifespan. However, regular maintenance could help ensure your appliance’s longevity, let you avoid expensive service calls and lead to lower utility bills.

Clean the coils to keep the

fridge efficient and cool. We mostly expect refrigerators to keep working. But imagine having a house full of holiday guests and waking up to find that it stopped. Not only are you stuck paying for repairs ($220 to $270 on average), or a new fridge (anywhere from $350 to over $2,500), but you might be making an expensive trip to the store to replace all the spoiled food.

The most important part of refrigerator maintenance is keeping the condenser coils clean. A dirty coil won’t release heat as well, causing the compressor to work harder, which in turn shortens its life and can cost you money in higher utility bills. Luckily, the process takes about 15 minutes and only needs to be done once or twice a year.

Start by unplugging your refrigerator. Units that have coils underneath them will likely have a cover needs to be remove and a condenser fan that should be cleaned. Other units have uncovered coils on the back. Using a brush or vacuum carefully clean off the dirt and dust. If you use a vacuum, check for and empty or dry out the drip pan, which is common on units with a builtin defroster.

The inside of a dishwasher needs cleaning as well. Your dishwasher might not be a necessity, but it sure is nice to spend time with visiting family and friends rather than washing dishes by hand. In fact, during one recent family visit, we ran our dishwasher was multiple times per day.

It’s important to clean the inside of the dishwasher as mineral deposits and leftover food scraps can build up, leading to clogged or leaky components and nose-turning smells. Running an unloaded dishwasher on a cleaning cycle with white vinegar could do the trick. You may also need to scrub the walls by hand and clean out the filter, which is often found at the bottom of the machine.

Next, gently wipe down and inspect the plastic gasket around the door, a break or leak could lead to an expensive mess. While gaskets cost about $10, labor costs can be between $75 and $150 an hour and damage from the water could be significantly more.

Respect the load limits of your washer and dryer. Im always shocked by the piles of laundry that build up when you have a full house. While

the extra towels, sheets and clothes from visiting guests might make it tempting, don’t overload your machines.

Too much weight can cause parts to wear out and break prematurely. Plus, you could wind up with detergent residue on clothes and need to rerun the cycle (a waste of time, water and energy), or damp clothes that still need to be dried.

Also, gently close washer and dryer doors. Too much force could break the switch – the small part that signals to the machine the door is closed. The average cost to fix common washing machine

problems is $50 to $150, while dryers’ more expensive parts push repairs costs to about $100 to $400.

Consider DIY repairs if something breaks. Even with proper maintenance, appliances can break. Unless you have a repairman in the family, you will likely spend $75-plus an hour to hire one.

You might consider trying to save a little money by doing the repairs yourself.

Bottom line: While every appliance will eventually need to be replaced, keeping the components clean and handling machines with care can help extend their lifespan.

Over the counter human medications: Are they safe for your pet?

A pharmacy is full of great medications for our many ailments; however many of them are not appropriate for our pets. Human over the counter medications are not created with our pets in mind, and are not laboratory tested for safety in pets. Animals metabolize drugs differently than humans, and are often much smaller than humans, making the dosing completely different. If you are ever wanting to use a medication you have at home, please call your veterinarian first to see if it is safe.

This could save your pet from suffering devastating side effects.

Human pain medications such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), Advil (ibuprofen) and Aleve (naproxen), can be very harmful when given to our pets. Dogs and cats do not have the appropriate liver

enzymes to break down these compounds, and they are converted to chemicals that can cause severe damage. It can result in damage to red blood cells, damage to the lungs and liver damage. If you believe your animal is in pain, please see your veterinarian to get appropriate and safe pain medications.

There are several different types of over the counter allergy medications, and not all of them are safe for your pet. Some have been linked to sedation, incoordinaton, vomiting, and even seizures.

Human allergy medicines can contain decongestants, which can cause vomiting, weakness, heart problems and tremors; this is why you should also never give cold medications to your pet. If you believe your animal is suffering from allergies, it is best to talk to your

veterinarian for a full assessment and appropriate medications.

Some human cough medications can contain codeine, which is likely to cause sedation and potentially, respiratory distress in our pets. Because our pets are generally smaller than us, these side effects are more likely to occur if animals are given a human dose. Your veterinary clinic can often prescribe cough medications that are safe for your pet, so it is best to see them if your pet has a cough. Coughs can often be a symptom of more severe disease, such as heart disease, so it is always a good idea to have your pet examined if they have a cough.

Your veterinarian is your best source of information when it comes to your pet. So always call your veterinarian before you treat at home.

Three wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph - one honouring veterans from World War I and World War II, one honouring all veterans who returned from wars and one honouring UN/NATO members.

The Alida community welcomes their newest and youngest resident, Fredrick Paul who arrived safe and sound on Nov. 3. He is a healthy baby boy for parents Allan and Jackie Krepakevich and his three siblings. Congratulations and best wishes to everyone.

There was a fair good turnout at the immunization station in Alida on Nov. 7 at the Golden Gate Centre.

Parents, Grandparents and friends attended the Remembrance Day Service at Redvers School on Nov. 8 at 11:15 a.m. They all did a very good job which was enjoyed by all those who were able to attend. On Nov. 11 please take a moment to remember those who made the great sacrifice and lost their lives while serving in the armed forces for our freedom, and of course to all the veterans as well – WE THANK YOU. WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM – LEST WE FORGET. Members of the Golden Gate Centre sponsored the Alzheim-

er’s Coffee Break event on Nov. 9. Hopefully there was a good crowd in attendance to help support the Alzheimer’s Society – we will always remember those who have been or are affected by this disease – We will “Forget Them Not”.

It was also the Alida Lion’s Senior Supper on Nov. 9 at the Alida Memorial Hall. Here’s hop-

Carlyle wins Regionals

The Carlyle Senior Girls Volleyball team competed in Regina on Nov. 10 and 11 for 3A Girls Regionals. Although they had a guaranteed spot at provincials as hosts, the win at Regionals cemented the fact that they are a contender for the province’s 3A competition and a well chosen host site for the Provincial competition.

Arcola Senior Girls hosted 1A Regionals on Friday, Nov. 10, and Saturday, Nov. 11. After a few tough battles the girls came out first in their pool and would face Kakisiswew again in the final. Defeating them in two, Arcola earned first place and the opportunity to go to 1A Girls Provincials being hosted in Fox Valley and Maple Creek.

The White Bear Cubs attended Junior Girls Playoffs in Arcola. The Cubs finished second in round robin action losing to Arcola and splitting with Carlyle. They battled with Carlyle in the playoff match and came out victorious, then came up against Arcola in the final and battled hard for the win.

Last team played for: Carlyle Cougars

and promotes and supports the needs of individuals and communities through a variety of programs and services.

These include supporting the Saskatchewan Pediatric Auditory Rehab Center (SPARC) as well as 135 Saskatchewan Elks Seniors Homes. A longtime member of the Moose Mountain #483 Elks Lodge, Nankivell delivered this address, outlining his aims for his 2017-2018 term as president: “I would like to thank all the Elks of the province for giving me the opportunity to be president for the ensuing year. I look forward to travelling to all corners of this great province and meeting new and old friends. Sister June has set the bar very high for the expectations of President.

My theme for this year is ‘Making a Positive Difference’.

They say they do things cowboy style and evidently, it works very well for them. I feel everybody was well looked after and had a great time.

I feel we have an excellent Executive, and one of the biggest challenges this year is to raise more funds for SPARC (Saskatchewan Pediatric Auditory Rehab Center) and at the same time, not forget or cut back on our pledge for the Fund for Children. We need everyone to look for new and innovative ways to raise these funds, and I feel with the cooperation between the Elks and Royal Purple Elks, this will be a very successful year.”

The next fundraiser for the pool and other organizations in Stoughton is the annual Dinner Theatre on Nov. 24 and 25, as well as Dec. 1 and 2. This year funds raised will be going to the Stoughton Rink, Playschool, Soccer Club, Daycare, Drop-In Centre, Legion, and the Swimming Pool – call 306457-7651 if interested in tickets for the occasion.

Maryfield Sunrise Villa News Submitted by Janet Marks Appreciation to the snowplow drivers who have kept our parking lot clear for our staff and visitors. The few of us who walk, have to be content with laps down the halls, with stops to visit our new housemates. The event of the week was our invitation next door to the Haven for an Old Tyme concert.

Twelve of us went across between the back doors.

The Happy Wanderers had come from Arcola, Broadview and Carlyle.

The four elderly gentlemen played violin, guitars, banjo and accordian; and two of them sang old familiar songs.

There was just enough room so the Fred and Mariann Krukoff could have one more old time waltz. The six hostesses of the Haven, Aspen Court and the Senior Housing Authority who are in their own apartments had each made a delicious pie for linch.

We had our choice of saskatoon, raspberry, apple, pumpkin, chocolate and lemon.

Leanne Jackson visited Aunt Alice Chaput, and said “Hi” to Ruth Holstrom and Ruth Dennis.

Rene ans Sharon Baudu also came.

Howard and Karen Friesen and Erika visited from Oak Lake, Man. Therese Lamontagne visited “the Wawota Girls”.

Charlotte Kovach and Janet Mark led the Hymnsing on the 5th, and Charlottebrought a movie and popcorn Friday night. Her son Rod sent along a box of the first Christmas; “For the Old Folks”.

Jean Vreys and Aileen Belva had visitors from Redvers, and Carol and Jim Adair of Moosomin visited with Alan.
