Toy Drive sure to put smiles on many young faces Shannon MacLeod at The Bargain Store says this year’s Carlyle and Area Toy Drive may be the most challenging one yet.

“This is the 4th year that CFY has partnered with The Bargain! Shop and other area businesses and it seems that the need is growing,” says MacLeod. “When economic conditions are challenging, families really feel the effects.

“The need is an ongoing thing and we don’t want anyone to be left out at Christmas, especially if they’ve already had a hard year.”

Macleod adds that The Bargain! Shop has upped their fundraising game with a special event planned for Saturday, Dec. 8, with details to come later.

“I think this will be the year with the most need ever and it’s a real local effort,” says MacLeod. “It’s our fourth year and we want to provide a little bit of Christmas to families from throughout this southeast corner of Saskatchewan.”

The Toy Drive aims to provide a gift from Santa to each young recipient.

“We gladly and gratefully accept donations of unwrapped gifts or cash donations that will allow us to give a little Christmas to boys and girls from birth to age 17,” says MacLeod. “The age group we usually get the most gifts donated to are for children from three to five years of age.”

“I’ve been asked for suggestions for gift ideas for pre-teens and teens and it can be as simple as hygiene stuff, such as shampoo, combs and brushes.

Mittens and sweaters are good and so are gift cards, if you’re unsure about a size or what to buy.”

“Last year, we provided gifts for kids from the southeast corner of Saskatchewan, including Carlyle, Arcola, White Bear, Kenosee, Kisbey, Ochapowace, Redvers, Alida, Alameda, Oxbow, Manor, Lampman, Kennedy and Wawota,” says MacLeod.

“Our application deadline to receive a guaranteed gift is Saturday, Dec. 8,” adds MacLeod. “But we’ll do our very best if someone’s left out.”

“We make it work,” she smiles.

MacLeod stresses that the application process is confidential. “We ask that people apply through organizations such as their church, band office, school, local family centre or other participating organization.”

Gold for Schmidt at Huskie Open Submitted On Saturday Nov. 24th, Nathen Schmidt of Carlyle competed at the 2018 Huskie Wrestling Open in the 61kg weight class. Nathen finished first place after defeating three opponents by technical superiority.

On the Friday, the U of Alberta GoldenBears defeated the U of Sask Huskies in a wrestling duel.

RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons We had another near miss between a School Bus and a Semi, this time on a grid road.

The Semi was northbound on a Grid Road and drove through a

yield sign almost striking the school bus. What is even more concerning is the Semi Driver was on a cell phone and likely does not even know he almost hit a school bus.

THE PHONE” On the first day of Whitetail season we had our first complaint of hunters shooting near a residence. Although we could not prove where the shots were fired from.........I think they were too close to the residence. The law states that you must be 500 metres from an occupied residence or from livestock. Our suggestion is know the area and know where your bullet will go if you miss, as many hunters do miss, or so I am told.

We had a call of a Cougar in Arcola. Wait, I know where you are going with this. We are talking about the variety with fangs and claws, well that still doesn’t differentiate does it? We had a call of a four legged animal that has fur and a tail. Conservation and RCMP Members were made aware. Let us be realistic though, there are Cougars in the area.....both types.

Our newest Member Dani ZAYA has arrived and he has already worn his Red Serge at Remembrance Day and attended a Town Hall in Redvers. He is eager to learn and become part of our Community.

We had several Members attend Regina this week to re-certify on the Conducted Energy Weapon. Recent training also acquired is Indigenous Policing, and Field Coaching Program Trainer.

We dealt with two 911 hangup calls. One from a business and another from a cell phone.

No Police involvement was required either time.

Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Assault and Uttering Threats.

We have had another on and off again relationship come to our attention. This time the allegation is one will slash the others tires. This is still under investigation.

Members and staff dealt with several Mental Health and Child Welfare calls. This includes one where our Victim Services Coordinator attended the Hospital to assist them with a situation and ended up being tasked to watch after a young child. With the help of the RCMP our Victim Services Coordinator got the child to school. I have to admit, the Detachment is not generally a child friendly place, but we did our best. Fortunately “Funniest Video’s” occupied the child for a bit. This is not the first time, nor will it be the last time we end up as a glorified child care facility.

We have had a couple people that have been extorted over the internet. The e-mail comes in stating they are aware of web sites that they should not have been on and threats that if they don’t pay they will have the information spread around to their friends. On one instance they told my wife she was “Naughty” and demanded $804.00 from my wife. She just deleted the e-mail and still has the $804.00.

We also had one of those too good to be true deals. Would you believe someone has a grant for $50,000.00 and if you accept this grant you only have to send me $1500.00 up front...... well, the deal is to good to be true and unfortunately these fraud artists are real good at what they do. Call the Police and never be embarrassed to call the Police.

Upon arriving at the Detachment we discovered it came off a stolen vehicle from Melfort. Our investigation and that of Melfort Detachment is continuing.

We had several calls that we describe as mischief, as in obstruct the lawful enjoyment of

property. This includes vandalism and people just being a nuisance.

One such individual was intoxicated and causing problems in Arcola while another caused problems in the Carlyle area. We gave them both a place to rest and relax and released them the following morning without charges. What always amazes me is how many people get kicked out of a residence for being, let us say, “Drunk and Stupid” and they think they will be able to find a friend or family member that will let them “Sleep it Off” Being “Drunk and Stupid” is now “Drunk, Stupid and Mad” because they got kicked out of the house they were in.

Not my house, well, not my personal house but “Cellblock” yes, there is always room in the inn.

We did have another case where several people were intoxicated and causing problems, but they all departed and did not attract any more attention. Thus no arrests or further calls.

I don’t pretend to understand why some people do things, but really, sending your new girlfriend over to the residence you use to share with your old girlfriend, to get belongings out of a shed. This will likely and did cause issues. Talk about poking the bear.

We had a mischief call outside one business in Carlyle and we are using video to assist in that investigation. Video is also assisting us in a shoplifting investigation in Arcola.

Police Officers are suspicious of pretty well anything. Thus if you choose to sit in your vehicle late at night in a parking lot we will investigate. If you are doing nothing “illegal” we will go on our merry way. That said if you swear and curse at us we become more suspicious. Why, oh why, would someone talk with such language to a Police Officer. We never did find out but they chose to phone in a complaint. As much as I dug I could find no error in the manner the Police Officers acted, nor could the complainants boyfriend.......or possibly ex boyfriend.

Our Curling Rink is not in an ideal location for the students from both schools to get to practice. We are therefore asking everyone to pay extra attention for pedestrians, especially young ones crossing the Highway.

We have had several calls of vehicles travelling without tail lights.

Please turn on your headlights when there is fog or it is dark. Trust

me, your vehicle will remind you to turn them off. The last thing you want is someone to drive into the rear of your vehicle.

We did respond to all these calls and did not locate most, however, on one occasion we did remove a semi off the road due to safety concerns.

We had a “Traffic Enforcement Blitz” this week and several individuals were dealt with.

On one day we had 23 charges involving violations of seatbelts, Infant car/ booster seats, stop signs, speeding, cell phone use, excessive damage to a windshield, vehicle failing to emit red tail light and uninsured vehicles. A further 9 Inspections notices were issued involving daytime running lights and excessive damage to windshield.

Members issued another 45 warnings, did 50 light vehicle inspections and charged one individual for Driving While Disqualified under the Criminal Code which resulted in a vehicle impound.

One individual that received a $580 ticket for no insurance, $175 for using licence plates on the wrong vehicle and a warning for having an obstructed licence plate.

Some days cheating the system does not work for you. Another individual got the warning for speeding, however, received a $115 fine for not having tail lights that emit red light and a warning for the damage to his windshield.

Another individual also got a warning for speeding but a $115.00 ticket for damage to his windshield.

Most expensive speeding tickets were $288 and $312. Beyond the one day “Blitz” we also gave out tickets for failing to wear a seatbelt, fail to stop at a stop signs, cell phone use as well as inspection notices and warnings for windshields, tail lights, brake lights, head lights, mudflaps, fail to produce registration, fail to change address on drivers licence, and fail to properly secure licence plate.

One individual was caught driving while disqualified criminally in Arcola and they had their vehicle impounded.

We had a report of a minor collision in the hills and the driver ended up finding himself with a 72 hr Suspension, a $360 liquor ticket and $300 ticket under the Marihuana Act. Folks drugs and alcohol and driving do not mix. Simple facts are sooner or later you will be caught or you will kill or injure someone.

“So far, the Southern Plains Co-op grocery store, the Carlyle RBC, The Bargain! Shop in Carlyle and the Bear Claw Casino are on board to accept donations of new unwrapped gifts or cash donations.

In the past, some companies have made a contribution to us in lieu of sending out Christmas cards.”

“We’ll be holding our final Wrap Party later in December and people can volunteer to help us out there, too,” she adds.

Trespassing law needs reasonable update

“Forgive us or trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against.”

One doesn’t have to especially religious to consider this passage from the Lord’s Prayer to be pretty good advice.

Now, it’s especially good advice for lawmakers now trying to navigate the difficult notions surrounding a landowners right to keep people tramping on their land.

In preparation for legislation expected as early as his week, the Saskatchewan government unveiled its survey results on what people would like to see in a new act Trespass to Property Act. This is largely a rural Saskatchewan issue and not all city people are aware of what’s going on and, arguably more importantly, the consequences of what’s going on.

Besides the obvious damage to crops and endangerment of livestock, certain crops are vulnerable to disease that can simply transported by people tramping through fields.

There is a long-standing problem of hunters damaging livestock and being a threat to safety.

And damage to the land and property done by quads, snowmobiles and other vehicles has always been a thing. While some of this clearly unintentional, some of it is a result of those who have always been careless and disrespectful. Combined with newer hunters and trekkers and we seem to have issues.

Moreover, landowners are vulnerable to lawsuit for damage people might cause themselves while being where they really should be in the first place.

For all these reasons, it makes sense for the government to review “existing legislation to better address the appropriate balance between rural land owners and members of the public.”

The government stressed that First Nations hunting and fishing rights that set out in the treaties and Constitutional guaranteed should not be effected because such rights “neither creates a right of access to privately owned land nor takes those rights away.”

Generally what the government seems to looking at in the new is meaningful changes to reverse the onus on trespassing.

One suggestion seems to involve no longer having to post land with “no trespassing” signs at specific distances. Hunters and others wishing access to land to contact the owners rather working under any assumptions that they are welcomed simple because there is no signage suggesting they are not.

It seems to make sense, but also here where things get rather complicated.

Getting permission to be on someone’s land is becoming increasingly complicated because of privacy laws and the fact that more land is owned by owners who might not be farming or living in the immediate area.

Elsewhere in the world, we are seeing what is called “right to roam” laws where the exact opposite is happening. In many European countries, trekkers on foot are gaining increased access to private land simply for the pleasure of enjoying the outdoors. Perhaps such laws are less necessary in a giant country like Canada, but it does seem to something that makes the world more neighbourly.

And then there are serious questions whether more regulation on who can come on your land will do much for rural crime.

By the same argument that tougher gun laws only hurt the law abiding, tougher trespassing laws may affect ordinary people than those with criminal intent.

In fact, it is legitimate to worry, as the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is now worrying, that people on their land without permission is up to no good.

Given the tensions we have sometimes seen between First Nations and non-First Nations people, especially in light of the Colten Boushie verdict, this could create potentially explosive situations.

Education is needed, but so is reason.

Maybe we all need to take a breathe and remember the prayer most of us were taught.

Lullaby and goodnight - may thy slumber be blessed A segment during a recent news broadcast contained the statement “there is no greater risk to your career than falling asleep on the job.” Apparently employees are falling asleep at work in ever increasing numbers.

It might be one thing to be caught by a co-worker or two but imagine when it happens to those in the public sphere: the Shelley Luedtke actor who fell asleep during a live TV interview, the politicians caught napping during meetings, or world leaders who found themselves the object of laughter or ridicule after falling asleep at an international event.

We are not getting enough sleep, and it shows.

Our cognition, memory and creativity are being impacted and our overall health is diminished because we simply don’t get the sleep we need. Some companies have long recognized this and provide nap rooms for their employees but these receive mixed reviews. On one hand human resource specialists are calling lack of sleep an epidemic yet some caution against using nap rooms warning it gives the wrong message. One suggests making up an excuse like a dental appointment and then going out to your car to take a short nap. Seriously? Lying and sneaking out to catch some sleep? Is this where we are at?

A composer, concerned about the direction of sleeping patterns, created an eight hour composition entitled “Sleep” to encourage listeners to get a good night’s rest. While some performers might take offence to someone falling asleep during their performance, Max Richter considers it a success if listeners sleep during what he describes as an “eight-hour lullaby.” He consulted with a neuroscientist to learn more about how the brain functions during sleep and then wrote 31 pieces that work to put us, and keep us, asleep. off (typically at midnight or just before) hopefully drift off into sleep while the music plays on for the next eight hours.

When our children were little there were bedtime rituals that became part of helping them prepare for sleep. It might include a warm bath, a snack, cuddling and a bedtime story, perhaps soft music and lights off--all done to help them settle into sleep. Why do so many of us leave those practices behind?

In a study conducted by the National Sleep Foundation 90% of parents reported their children slept less than recommended guidelines, while close to 60% wished they themselves could get more sleep. There are many factors at work in this equation and certainly some are dealing with diagnosed sleep disorders, but the biggest culprit for many is something over which we have control-our electronic devices. The light our screens give off can slow or even halt the production of melatonin, the hormone that signals our brain to keep us in a normal sleep cycle. Our brains are being rewired, and for what? To watch a video a stranger posted of their cat doing something we’ve seen 100 other pets do before? To see vacation pictures of a friend we haven’t spoken to in 10 years? To read the rants of celebrities or politicians? R o o m temperature, comfort of the bedding, caffeine intake, and what’s on our mind can all play a part in how difficult it might be to try and sleep. But the biggest factor may be the easiest to deal with.

Most of what might be happening overnight on our laptops, tablets and phones can be dealt with in the morning, and with greater ability for discernment after a good night’s sleep.

Our hearts, minds, and mood are being impacted by lack of sleep, not to mention our jobs, ability to learn, our creativity and clarity. There are legitimate reasons we may have a sleepless night, but for the health of our brains and bodies we need to do all we can to shut out the noise and place a higher premium on shut eye.

That’s my outlook.

Three common myths about type 2 diabetes

November is National Diabetes Month. Currently, approximately three million Canadians are diagnosed with the disease. Could you be next?

While certain members of the population are more at risk for developing diabetes than others, you may be surprised to learn that the disease can strike nearly anyone.

Here are three of the most prevalent myths about

diabetes.

1. It’s caused by eating too much sugar: while type 2 diabetes is linked to elevated levels of sugar in the blood, a diet high in sugar doesn’t necessarily cause the disease.

2. There will always be symptoms: symptoms of type 2 diabetes include fatigue, intense thirst, blurred vision and frequent urination. However, those with the disease may have no symptoms at all.

3. Only old or overweight people are affected: while age and weight are risk factors for the disease, diabetes can affect anybody, regardless of age or size.

Wawota/Manor boys earn provincial title

Carievale 4-H Beef Club update Submitted On Oct. 15, Carievale Beef 4-H held their monthly meeting. Kamryn Gilliland – President, called the meeting to order. The pledge was recited and roll call was made. Old business was reviewed and discussed.

A District meeting was held Oct. 17 at 7:15 pm at The Golden Years Club in Carievale; Teresa, Mikyla, Kamryn, & Ryan were the voted delegates. Members will have pop, water, and coffee for refreshments, and need someone to bring cookies or dainties.

The late Joan Rutledge donated $225.00, it was discussed whether members should put it towards new club t-shirts, and what their color should be.

New Business included discussion of the

following events, dates, and learning opportunities.

Nov. 7 was National 4-H Day - #showyourcolours, club members were encouraged to wear green. Pasture Management Day will be Oct. 21st from 1-5 pm at Steven and Katie Cowan’s and hosted by Kamryn Kyle of Lower Souris Watershed.

The Carievale 4-H Beef Club will not be entering showmanship or team grooming in Agribition this year.

The Manitoba Ag Ex ran from Oct. 24 to 27.. Thursday and Friday are breed shows, Saturday October, 27th at 10am is junior show & showmanship, 2pm is prospect steer and heifer show, 5pm supreme breed, 7pm Manitoba Finals Rodeo, members were encouraged to attend if possible.

A Halter Breaking Clinic was be hosted by Denise Bigney-Allum on Oct. 28 at Carnduff Ag Grounds.

The Leaderama will be held Dec. 1 in Weyburn at a cost of $40 per member/leader, the registration deadline is November 15th.

4-H leader, Teresa Cowan applied for the FCC 4-H Club Fund grant, any money received would be used to purchase new club shirts.

4-H District Rally will be held on November 8th and hosted by Carnduff Beef Club in Glen Ewen.

Members worked on their recordbooks, and a presentation was given on calf selection by Mikyla. It was decided that the next meeting of Carievale Beef 4-H will be held November 12th, 2018, then the meeting was adjourned.

Lemieux, George, Wilvers reappointed to Redvers Housing Authority Lucille Lemieux, Mona George and Linda Wilvers have been reappointed to the Redvers Housing Authority Board of Directors. Other members of the board of directors are Anita Colleaux and Eleanore Matthewson.

Lemieux is chairperson.

The Redvers Housing Authority is a community-based organization that provides daily management of 54 housing units constructed and operated under the terms of a federal provincial muni-

cipal cost sharing agreement.

Social Services Minister, Paul Merriman, paid tribute to the volunteers who manage the social housing projects in their community.

“This local hands-on approach ensures that the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation responds effectively to the needs of each community.”

Saskatchewan has a network of 260 housing authorities and more than 1,400 volunteer members who assist with management of

housing units throughout the province for seniors, low income families and persons with disabilities.

Persons interested in volunteering to serve on the board of directors for the Redvers Housing Authority are encouraged to contact the mayor of Redvers. A local nominating committee recommends board members.

Applications for accommodation are available from the manager of the Redvers Housing Authority.

Submitted The Wawota/Manor senior boys volleyball team went to Kinistino this past weekend to compete at the 2A level Provincial volleyball tournament. They went undefeated in 7 games, not losing a set, to come out as the Gold Medal Champs! The boys have had a busy and successful season leading up to provincials as the team had played about 50 games in tournament play, winning about 40 of those games. They had gone to Regionals November 16th and 17th in Gravelbourg and had placed first to advance to Provincials Nov. 23 and 24 in Kinistino.

Play for the tournament was split between Melfort and Kinistino as 2 facilities are needed to accommodate the Draw.

In the Round Robin on Friday in Melfort, the boys played Pinehouse Lake, Carrot River and Meath Park. They won all 3 of these games in 2 sets. On Friday morning, play was scheduled at the Kinistino School as the 4th game of the Round Robin was against Wilkie, which again was won in 2 sets.

The semi-final was versus Montmartre who the boys had been up against in different tournaments this year, and they were tough competitors with the first set being a close one, but ultimately again the game was won in 2 sets.

The Semi-Final was against Leader, who

the boys had also played the previous weekend at Regionals in Gravelbourg—again a hard fought game, but won in 2 sets. The final game was played against Medstead, which was again won in 2 sets, resulting in a Gold Medal for the

Wawota/Manor boys! It was a great team effort, and the boys all played well; there are 9 boys on the team and 7 of the boys are in Grade 12 so this will be their final year competing—a great way to end their high school volleyball.

Cougars on 3-game winning streak

Submitted by Nicole Currie On Friday, Nov. 16 the PureChem Cougars hosted the Bienfait Coalers and celebrated their first win of the season with a score of 12-3.

Ben Johnstone scored 19 seconds into the game to get the team rolling. He proceeded to score 4 more with a total of 5 points on the night.

Tyler Fleck’s assists led him to a 5 point night as well. Bienfait took advantage of their Power Play opportunities scoring their 3 goals with Carlyle down a man. Greenwood, Morrison, Shaw, Ty Currie and Boutin each contributed with a goal, Fox netting 2 and Deck with a couple of assists for the win.

Saturday, Nov. 17 the Cougars headed to Carnduff to take on the Red Devils.

This was a hard fought game as each team wasn’t giving the others an inch. Ben Johnstone got things fired up for the Cougars again, scoring the first goal of the game at 13:52. Nathan Deck had the only goal in the second period, scoring 9 minutes in on a power play.

Carnduff wasn’t backing down and didn’t want the 2-0 score going into the third to stay that way.

They snuck 2 in and tied up by the 7-minute mark.

It was tense for all the fans, each hoping that their team would score the next goal as it felt like sudden death. With just 16 seconds left in the third, looking at overtime, Ben gets his second of the night.

Cougars win.

Tuesday, Nov. 20, the Cougars hosted the 201718 League champs, the Redvers Rockets.

Audet was ready for this game, making a huge save just 1 minute into the game.

Brent McLean took charge, responding 28 seconds later by scoring a beauty goal with the assists gong to Morrison and Fox. It was only 5 minutes into the game when Nathan Deck rifled one in from the point giving us a 2-0 lead. Johnstone and Turgeon would get the assists.

Deck, then took advantage of the Rockets being short-handed due to an interference penalty and blasted another one in from the blue line! Clayton

Geiger and Tyler Fleck helped him out with that one and the Cougars lead 3-0 heading into the second period.

The battle was on and Redvers has a great chance, but it won’t cross the line. A rush is started as Kelly Currie gets it past a Rocket, Brayden Liboiron lending a hand and getting it over to Ben Johnstone who makes it a 4-0 game. Redvers is working hard to get on the board. Kenton Miller scores a short-handed goal, with less than 6 minutes left in the period. It ends at 4-2.

To start the third, it was Miller striking again, scoring a minute and a half into the period. With the score now 4-2, the Cougars aren’t looking to allow them to score again.

Four minutes later, Johnstone lets them know the Cougars mean business, tapping one in with Deck and Greenwood getting the helpers. The Cougars are on a roll and Audet is playing another great game, facing 40 shots. There is less than 4 minutes left and the Cougars take advantage of a Rockets’ slashing penalty. Geiger snipes with help from Fleck and Johnstone. It’s a 6-2 win for the Cougars.

The Cougars 2nd Annual Give Back To The Community is this Friday, Nov. 30th hosting the Arcola/ Kisbey Combines. This week was a busy week for Chris’ Novice Cougar team. They started the weekend off playing Thursday (Nov. 22) night in Arcola. It was a great game and the kids came home winning 18-0. On Saturday they played host to Wawota and took home their second win of the week, winning 13-0.

It was a busy weekend but the boys played great and are really coming together as a team. Above photo is the team playing in Arcola and right photo is home game against Wawota.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Ashley and Ryan Steffensen and family on the passing of her grandfather Colin Bennett of Gainsbourgh on Nov. 15 at Galoway Health Centre, Oxbow. Funeral Service will be held Dec. 1 at Gainsbourgh United Church.

On Nov. 16 and 17 the Oxbow Black Knights Girls Senior Volleyball team played in their last Provincial tournament at Clavet, SK. They won their first games against Lumsden 25-13 but lost the second set bringing home the Bronze medal – they had a great season and gained much experience. Good work girls and continued good luck in the future.

Gray and Edel Cowan were dinner guests with Joyce and Jackie George (Redvers) on Nov. 21.

On Nov. 22 Shelly Cowan and daughter Ainsley went to Minot to spend Thanksgiving with the Nilsen family.

Marcy’s Diner held a Customer’s Appreciation Day on Nov. 23. There were many customers who came throughout the day to enjoy a coffee and dain-

ty and to wish Marcia all the best in her future endeavors. She will be turning over the reins and ownership of the restaurant officially by mid-December.

It was Grey Cup weekend this past weekend with the final game being played on Sunday in Edmonton with the Ottawa RedBlacks against Calgary Stampeders. Now being from the west, I definitely am cheering for the Stamps – here’s hoping that they end up on top. Hip hip Hooray – Calgary are the Champs – with a 27-16 win. Congratulations to the team.

We have been having some great weather, temperature wise anyway; however the foggy conditions weren’t too greatly appreciated. I always forget to take note if the saying that for every horror-frost day it means a rainy day the following spring. Mr. Jack Frost can surely paint some beautiful scenes as he covers everything with frost. I was able to finally get my Christmas lights up outside and not freeze my fingers (mark it on the calendar). Our Circle of Friends topic this week was Food Stories. Leora had ruined a salad with sugar instead of salt. Jessie always put horseradish in pickles.

Mary had poured salt on her beans , and forgot sugar in brownies. At one Maritime boarding house there was always baked beans for Sunday lunch. A crockpot with beans, molasses, water, and salt pork went in the oven Saturday night.

Since the cookstove heated two nearby bedrooms, whoever got up in the night added fuel to the stove and stirred the beanpot. No work on Sunday was involved.

Margaret Penner on a trip to South America was served fried green bananas. Instead of potatoes there was mandica, which looks like a banana.

That year in the Dirty Thirties when the wheat crop failed, Canada heard that children on the prairies were starving. The unemployed in the Okanagan picked carloads of apples. The Government of Canada moved to pay the freight. Fred said the whole town smelled of MacIntosh apples that day.

Romeo Joseph Boutin 1928 - 2018

The death of Romeo Joseph Boutin, 90, of Redvers, Sask. occurred at the Redvers Health Centre on Saturday, November 3, 2018.

Romeo’s memory will be forever cherished by his wife of 64 years, Marguerite (née Landry) and their family: daughter Dianne Dobson of Caroline, Alta.; grandchildren, Christa Dobson (Denis Gilbertson), Lyle (Melissa) Dobson and their children, Sierra, Brooke and Carter and Steven (Sarah) Dobson and their children, Noah and Abigail; son Denis (Annette) Boutin of Alida, Sask.; grandchildren, Daniel (Amy) Boutin and their children, Addyson and Presley, Chantelle (Craig) Faas and their children, Audrey, Isaac and Laura, and David Boutin; son Gille (Cheryle) Boutin of Alida, Sask.; grandchildren, Stephanie (Derek) Campbell and their children, Hayden, Dane, Haze and Stella, Quince (Tristen) Boutin and Robbie Boutin (Shandi McMillen); son Yvan (Pamela) Boutin of Spruce Grove, Alta.; grandchildren, Renée, Natalie and Jackson Boutin; daughter Doris (Scott) Morrow of Regina, Sask.; grandchildren, Samantha and Caelan Morrow.

Romeo will also be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Victoria Boutin of Carlyle, Sask., Angeline (Roland) Boulet of Olds, Alta. and Marie Piwowar of Edmonton, Alta.; sisters-in-law, Irene Boutin of Edmonton, Alta. and Bertha Boutin of Redvers, Sask., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Paulette in infancy; son-in-law Brian Dobson; parents, O’Neil and Marie Boutin; siblings, Antonio (Thérèse) Boutin, Rosario Boutin, Laurier Boutin and Julia (Alex) Gervais and brother-in-law Joe Piwowar.

The Prayer Service was held on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. and the Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Both services were held at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, Redvers, with Rev. Wilfred Calinawan presiding.

Obituaries

Marie Lamontagne October 31, 1939 - November 13, 2018 Marie Lamontagne, youngest of four, was born on October 31, 1939, to Robert Pryce and Clara Simons. Marie attended school at Ardine school and lived with her parents until 1955 when she moved to Glenavon where she worked as a telephone operator for two years before returning to the Ardine district for another year of school. In 1958 Marie moved to Regina where she took nurse's training. She worked as a nurse's aide at the Regina General Hospital until 1960 when she returned to the Wawota/Dumas area to marry Clarence Lamontagne. Clarence and Marie were married in Dumas, SK on October 22, 1960. Their first home was located at the Willard Jensen farm, six and a half miles east of Kennedy. In 1961, they spent six months in Whitewood while Clarence did carpentry work. They bought the old Taylor Farm, six and a half miles north of Wawota in 1962 which is where they resided until May of 2003 when they sold the farm and moved to Wawota.

Marie was the cornerstone of her family, devoting all her love and attention to her family. She was a wonderful cook (there was always room for one more at the table), an avid knitter, and always had a big garden. She was a long member of the Vandura Hospital Workers and member of the St. Francis Xavier CWL. Marie was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Clara; brothers, Ellis and John Pryce; sister, Christina Julie; brothers-in-law, Nicholas Julie and Bertie Lamontagne; sisters-in-law, Gertie and Jean Pryce; and three nephews, Kelly Lamontagne, Barry Pryce, and Darcy Pryce.

She leaves to mourn Clarence, her husband of 58 years; three children, Donna (Ron) Bessey, Lori (Ray) Ries, and Mark Lamontagne; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Prayer Vigil was held at St. Francis Xavier Church in Wawota, SK on November 19, 2018.

Funeral Mass was held at the Wawota Town Hall, Wawota, SK on November 20, 2018.
