The popular Superslides are up and running

By Kelly Johnson of the Observer There were a lot of happy people returning to The Superslides at Kenosee Lake on July 24, as the very popular water park owners had been waiting patiently for the go ahead to open from the Saskatchewan Health Authority [SHA].

It was a perfect day to open as the weather was hot, reaching almost 30 C on opening day, and continuing sunny and warm through the weekend.

Capacity is restricted to 150 people so the waterslide park is operating in two blocks to achieve capacity each day. The site is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.,

closing for an hour to clean and sanitize, and then reopening to a second block of customers from 3-7 p.m. each day.

The park was operating at maximum capacity on July 24 and 25; July 26 was close to a sell out as well for the popular attraction.

On July 24, the slides had a special attraction of pro wrestling on site which was being filmed by a production crew from Regina for the reality television show Mobile MD starring Dr. Samantha Henley. The show features the doctor travelling Saskatchewan in an R.V., attending to patients in rural areas of the province.

Coming up on the

August long weekend at The Superslides at Kenosee Lake will be Super Hero Sunday which will run July 31 and Aug. 1 as well.

There will be capacity limits and patrons will be able to book the 100 of the 150 tickets online or hope to be one of the first 50 inline for each block daily on the weekend.

Harvey and Jan Armstrong are “very pleased” to have the water park up and running and are “extremely grateful” to their patrons thanking them for their support and patience on waiting for the slides to reopen.

Ben Hare is at Moose Mountain Provincial Park visiting at his uncle’s cabin.

Ben Hare is a young person who has been visiting at his uncle’s cabin at Moose Mountain Provincial Park [MMMP], travelling from Kelowna, B.C., with his parents for a week of holidays with his parents.

He spent most of his time playing mini golf, pontoon boating, and playing horseshoes in the yard at the cabin.

Hare has been to MMMP on several occasions, “not remembering” his first visit when he was one-year-

old. His parents made the move west from Montreal to Kelowna five years ago and they now make MMMP a summer holiday destination each year.

Hare is very well travelled for a teenager who is still in high school, having had the pleasure of vacationing in Greece, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and having navigated the English Channel from France to England via the High Speed Chunnel train.

His favourite va-

cation was the trip to Greece, where the family stayed in a residence that was styled like a castle, and he was able to enjoy cliff diving at a nearby location. Hare has hopes to someday travel to Asia, with Singapore as one of the chosen destinations that he would like to see while visiting the Orient, and someday would like to visit Iceland and Australia.

Hare recommends that Greece is one place everyone should make a vacation destination.

Co-op found a unique way to hold its annual meeting

The Southern Plains Co-op found a unique method to host its annual general meeting Monday night.

The event was held at Carlyle’s landmark Prairie Dog DriveIn. Thirty-two people signed the attendance registrar, but there were people in attendance who didn’t sign in.

“It worked out well,” said Southern Plains Co-op general manager Brian Enns. “Those in attendance could either listen through their vehicle radio or there was a speaker on the side of the building that you could also hear through.”

They didn’t have any hiccups during the evening. Members were asked to use text or email for their questions or for making motions.

The co-op thought about showing the speeches on the drive-in’s big screen, but then the co-op would have had to wait for dusk to hold the meeting, and they thought that many in attendance might have to leave before dusk.

Photo by Kelly Johnson of the Observer they were able to hear all of the reports, and they (reports) were in the package, of course, and we were able to complete everything required under our bylaws for an annual meeting.”

Enns, members of the board and others spoke from one of the drive-in’s buildings.

Enns was happy with the number of people who were present, since this was the first time they have tried this format and this location. In most years, the annual meeting has

been held in Estevan, which is where the coop’s head office is located.

As for highlights from the past year, the co-op added a liquor store to their grocery store in Estevan and their convenience store in Oxbow. They also did some exterior branding at the Estevan gas bar and convenience store.

They have purchased a retail liquor sales permit for Carlyle.

at the junction of Highway 9 North and 13, is expected to be ready in 2021.

“We also purchased land in Carlyle for the new food store in the future,” said Enns.

Construction on the new food store isn’t expected to begin until 2022.

Sales for the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 2020, were at $79.4 million, down slightly from the $79.5 million the previous year. The coop had a $67.9 million cost of goods sold, for a gross margin of $11.5 million. After operating and administration expenses of more than $13 million, the co-op had a loss from operations of $1.48 million.

The co-op received a patronage dividend of more than $5 million from Federated Co-operatives Ltd., and allowing for a deduction for income taxes payable,

the co-op wound up with net savings of more than $3.5 million.

With the sales figures for last year, the co-op has now exceeded $1.5 billion in sales since it was incorporated in 1946.

In his report to the board, chairperson Scott Kienlen said the co-op is pleased to have maintained sales over the past number of years despite the challenging business environment.

“We continue working in partnership with our neighbouring coops when opportunities arise, whether it be shared delivery of fuel, agro supplies, providing administrative support and most recently health and safety services and shared bulk oil delivery.”

And while the COVID-19 pandemic struck Saskatchewan after the 2019-20 fiscal year ended, Kienlen did point out COVID has vastly changed the way the co-op operates and the co-op had to adapt very quickly.

Kienlen pointed out the co-op continues to contribute to the local communities with donations, fundraising sponsorships and volunteering for events and projects. The community engagement committee reported that the coop invested $150,482 back into the communities they live in during 2019, thanks to support of various organization and a number of different events throughout their region.

The board approved equity allocations of

2.75 per cent on food purchases, 5.25 per cent on petroleum, 6.75 per cent on dyed diesel fuel, 9.75 per cent on oil and 1.5 per cent on all other purchases. In total, they paid $1,741,045 back to the members.

Also during the meeting, the co-op held its election of directors.

Lynne Hewitt, Richard Ruetz and Linda Thauberger-Smith were acclaimed to another three-year term on the board. Michelle Deichert, who was also on the board, did not seek another term.

Under the co-op’s bylaws, they can operate with seven to 10 board members, so they are not seeking a replacement for Deichert at this time.

Kienlen will be the chairperson for a second year. Thauberger-Smith will be the vice-chair and James Lainton will be the secretary. Other members of the board include Frances Boutin, David Murray, Rhonda Huish and Darcy Calder.

Enns noted that over the past five years, the co-op has invested $16 million in assets in their different communities: Carlyle, Alameda, Oxbow, Gainsborough and Estevan. And during that timeframe, they have returned more than $6 million back to its members through member patronage dividends.

“At Southern Plains Co-op, we continue to look for areas we can grow in, and we continue investing in the communities we serve,” said Enns.

Government can’t relax on COVID-19

By Murray Mandryk We all love the Canadian Football League and love the Saskatchewan Roughriders even more.

Short of a lemon yellow canola field under a living sky of blue, it’s doubtful you will find a Saskatchewan image more iconic than the green pantone of the ’Riders.

Saskatchewan is a small province. We have no other long-time professional teams. And, really there are few truly unifying things in a place often divided between rural and urban and left and right.

The ‘Riders bring us all together.

Moreover, it’s an election year when political parties rally around positive and unifying symbols.

So it might have seemed a no-brainer for Premier Scott Moe to make a case that Regina and Mosaic Stadium should be the CFL’s hub city, should there be a CFL season.

To not do so in Saskatchewan – to not send the message that this province is as good as anywhere else, at least when it comes to the CFL – would have left some grumbling.

So within hours of hearing Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister, who presides over the home of the rival Blue Bombers, was putting up $2.5 million for that province’s hub city bid, we heard Moe was willing to pony up $3 million for Regina’s bid.

But what about the pandemic?

Many suspect Winnipeg secured the tentative hub city bid weeks ago because the hotels and indoor facilities surrounding Winnipeg’s stadium, along with the larger international airport, made it the preferred choice of the CFL Players’ Association.

If this was the case, was it a wise choice of the government’s time to be messing around with this bid in the middle of a pandemic when there are surely other priorities?

But if it was a serious attempt and not a political ploy, was it our best expenditure of money?

With all that is going on, including a $2.4 billion 2020-21 deficit in which this government seemingly doesn’t have much money for anything, could $3 million be put to better use?

How should we spend it now?

Surely, there are better things we could do with the money than throwing it into the infrastructure pot so we can put a new layer of pavement on roads, pretty much what governments always do before every election.

If we do have a few extra coins to throw around, wouldn’t it be better to put it towards making sure teachers have masks and that schools are clean and ready to accept students returning to classes this fall?

In fairness, to Moe and his government, it has tried to be responsible in its spending and has been criticized by some for being too slow in re-opening Saskatchewan.

Three million dollars isn’t much in the context of a $16-billion annual provincial budget. And Moe explained that the CFL hub city bid, supported by the City of Regina and local hoteliers, would have been a step towards recovery with some 600 CFL players moving here for two or three months.

But COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan increased by about 160 in a week and a half in the middle of this month, an average of 15 or so a day instead of one or two.

Quietly, this is the second-biggest outbreak since the rapid spread in La Loche.

And while it is true that most can be traced to outbreaks on Hutterite colonies, that doesn’t make what’s going on right now any less serious.

Now is not the time for government to lose sight of the problem at hand.

Now is not the time to relax what’s been a vigilant approach by the Sask. Party government in the COVID-19 fight.

And now is certainly not the time for a government to be distracted by politically popular notions when this pandemic requires our full attention.

Make it a ham on rye, or a meatball sub or a…

Shelley Luedtke I came across the article and for some reason read it from start to finish.

It was commentary on a survey asking people to rank their favorite sandwiches. Not too earth-shattering, so I guess I wondered how you would fill copy talking about bread, meat and vegetables. I couldn't believe I was spending time reading about sandwiches because, frankly, I don't like them.

I can’t blame my years in school. I took lunches for only Grades 1 and 2, and then we moved to places where I could walk home at noon every day and my mom always had great meals prepared.

I spent a year with a music ministry team

right out of university and we ate a lot of bagged lunches, graciously prepared by the various host homes where we stayed, with sandwiches being the most commonly packed item.

It’s not hard to see why. Sandwiches are portable, they can be made ahead, and are seemingly universally liked. When that tour ended I found it easy to avoid sandwiches until kids came along.

Of course just because I helped my girls make their sandwiches didn’t mean I had to eat them — until one summer.

The summer of the sandwich.

Over the course of several weeks one summer, our family had multiple activities that stretched over the lunch and supper hour, and the easiest way to keep us fed was hauling around picnic baskets and coolers. They were filled with a variety of options but at the centre of each meal was the (un)celebrated sandwich. I couldn’t wait for the end of that summer so we could return to meals at home where my options would be in-

creased. I was so bored of sandwiches.

Bored?

Wow, talk about the heights of ingratitude.

By the end of summer 2020, more than 50 countries will face acute food insecurity.

That’s just a fancy way of saying extreme hunger. Starvation. This represents hundreds of millions of people without access to enough food to survive. Just let that sink in for a moment.

What is compounding this situation is the number of people affected by the economic shutdown of the past few months. That means there is less money being sent to aid agencies or from relatives abroad to those in the greatest distress.

That concern exists for agencies and food banks in this country too, and the demand will only continue increasing. While I mutter about having to eat something I don’t like, children and adults are starving to death each day from having nothing at all.

The 1,223 sandwich eaters surveyed for the article put grilled

cheese on top, followed by turkey. Rounding out the top five were grilled chicken, roast beef and ham. Others making the list were tuna, egg salad, pulled pork, meatball, French dip and the Reuben.

Look at that variety.

Think about how many more there are— sandwiches you or I could make right now either because we have the ingredients sitting in our fridges, freezers, cupboards and pantries, or we have access to any number of grocery outlets that can easily supply our needs.

That’s just the sandwiches. Our meals each week include so much more.

Whether I’m offered a peanut butter and jelly or a bacon, lettuce and tomato, I need to be aware of the fact that I live in a place where I get to be choosy.

But deciding anything about my meals or grocery shopping should go way beyond what I might or might not like.

The most important food decision I can make today is giving someone else something to eat. That’s my outlook.

Southeast A’s on a three-game winning streak Improved pitching and defensively play have enabled the Southeast A’s U15 AA baseball team to play some of their best baseball of the season.

The A’s, who are based out of Alameda but feature talent from throughout the southeast region, were riding a three-game winning streak, entering their game against the Estevan Brewers July 30 in Estevan.

It was an 8-0 victory over the Brewers on July 23 that started the current run for the A’s. Then they swept the Assiniboia Aces 13-8 and 13-4 in a doubleheader on the weekend in Alameda.

“Our bats have been good all year, but our pitching and defence was a little weak the first couple of games, not at the level we’d like to see it at, and we’re just starting to get back into playing complete ball games, and that’s been the difference,” said coach Blair Beck.

The win over Estevan gave the A’s some muchneeded confidence, as they were 1-5 to start the season.

Beck was pleased with how they pitched and hit the ball against the Aces.

The A’s have one player from each of Kipling, Moosomin and Alameda, four from Carnduff, three from Oxbow and two from Carlyle, so they certainly live up to their name as a regional team. With many of the players living more than 20 minutes away from Alameda, it shows their dedication that they make it to practices and games.

“Last year we had all of April to have a training camp and get ready to go. We never had that this year, obviously, with COVID,” said Beck. “Most of these guys, over the years, have played together or played against each other, so they’re all pretty familiar, and we have a good group of kids and parents.”

One of the things

they’re most excited about is how well everyone gets along, and how committed they area.

“It’s not easy when you have to drive that far for some of the guys,” said Beck.

Six players are back from last year’s team, and the year of growth, maturity and confidence has helped them drive the offence.

Beck pointed out that last year they played 38 games and hit 15 homes runs. Already this year, they have hit a dozen home runs in nine games.

“The main thing is just to keep that confidence going, and especially with our older guys and some guys that have lots of experience now, and are confident with what they can do,” he said.

League play will continue until early September. Their league playoffs are expected to happen later that month, but there won’t be provincial tournaments this year.

Golfer of the Week: It pays to golf local

By Kelly Johnson of the Observer Taylor Baldwin is from Alameda and he plays most of his golf at the Moose Creek Course in Moose Creek Regional Park, just a short drive east of his hometown.

Baldwin began golfing very young and was encouraged to take up the game by his father. His first memories of the game were hitting balls at the local schoolyard in Alameda at around seven years of age.

The first time being on a golf course was in Oxbow at the Oxbow Golf Course. The ninehole sand green course was one of the oldest clubs in the province be-

fore it was closed.

Baldwin golfs quite regularly and will golf close to 50 rounds this year by freeze up at the course. He was handed

some prize winnings from last week’s men’s night while doing this interview.

Baldwin plays several local courses in the area,

including White Bear, Kenosee Lake, Carnduff and TS&M Woodlawn in Estevan. He has played Dakota Dunes in Saskatoon, the Souris Valley

Taylor Baldwin plays most of his golf on the nine-hole Moose Creek Golf Course.

Saskota Baseball League finishing league play

By Kelly Johnson of the Observer There is one team left in the Saskota League that is undefeated and there is a tight race for top spot with the Estevan Wolves defeating the Carlyle Cardinals on July 17 to stand as the only undefeated team.

The Cardinals had won four in a row with another shut out performance by Kody Rock over the visiting Redvers A’s on Tuesday July 21, downing the Redvers squad 8-0.

Two nights later, the Kenosee Cubs came to Lions Park in Carlyle, hoping to knock off the surging Cardinals. The teams battled each other through six innings, with each team scoring often and early.

to keep the bats hot winning the battle of the league’s top teams 15-10.

The Cardinals defeated the Kipling Royals 9-1 on July 28 in Carlyle. The two teams were scheduled to meet again

on July 30 in Kipling.

The Saskota regular season schedule is finished on July 31.

Teams finishing eighth and ninth will

play a survivor series and then playoffs begin, with teams seeded one through eight playing a best-of-three series.

Southeast Twins won two of four this past weekend The Southeast U18 AAA Twins went 2-2 on the weekend, sweeping a doubleheader against the Parkland Expos Saturday afternoon but dropping two against the Regina Wolfpack Sunday.

Advisory issued after customer at Kenosee Lake business tests positive for COVID-19 virus For the first time since COVID-19 was diagnosed in Saskatchewan more than four months ago, the Saskatchewan Health Authority issued an advisory regarding someone with the virus in southeast Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority issued an advisory Friday after confirmation of a positive COVID-19 individual, who was likely infectious while attending a business in Kenosee. Anyone who attended the Bar Bar from 9:30 p.m. on July 17 to 12:30 a.m. on July 18 is asked to selfmonitor for symptoms for 14 days after the visit, or seek a testing referral by contacting HealthLine 811.

The advisory following rumours in the Carlyle area that someone had tested positive.

However, the SHA did not divulge any further details, including where the individual was from originally.

The Bar Bar says that it is open to the public and it is operating business as usual.

The case is part of a surge in COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan, and in the south in particular.

While most cases being diagnosed in this province are connected to Hutterite colonies, there have been cases that stemmed from travel and mass gatherings not associated with Hutterites.

There were 50 new cases of COVID-19 to report in Saskatchewan

on July 29, bringing the total to 1,268 cases, the Ministry of Health said Wednesday.

Forty-four of the new cases were located in the north.

Of the 1,268 reported cases, 322, or 25.4 per cent, are considered active.

Twenty-two more people have recovered, bringing the provincial total to 929. Approximately 73.2 per cent of people diagnosed with COVID-19 are listed as recovered.

The south region, which covers an area from the Alberta border to the west, the Manitoba border to the east, the U.S. border to the south, and some areas north of the Trans-Canada Highway in the west, has had 270 cases, the secondmost of any region in the province. There are 143 active cases.

At one time, the south region went seven weeks without a case, from early April to late May. The first of the Hutterite colony cases was reported in June.

In a post on the White Bear Health Facebook page, Chief Nathan Pasap of the White Bear First Nation said they knew this day would come with a local case.

“Although this is a startling event, it should also be an eye-opener that we must maintain our social distancing and continue to practise COVID-19 safety measures, such as hand washing and disinfecting com-

monly used areas, as well as items purchased at stores.”

He also praised the health department for being extremely diligent in ensuring that all safety measures are adhered to during wakes, funerals and community events.

“Health professionals are predicting that this pandemic will not go away any time soon, however, we can keep up our efforts to ensure the continued health of ourselves and loved ones,” he said.

In cases where anyone tests positive for COVID-19, a contact investigation immediately follows, in which public health reaches out to anyone who might be linked to a positive case and provides them with information on testing and self-isolation.

If health officials are uncertain that they have identified all known close contacts, they may take further action to notify the community about possible locations where positive individuals may have attended while symptomatic.

As contact tracing efforts continue in many areas of Saskatchewan, health officials are strongly reminding all Saskatchewan residents to ensure they are personally following public health orders and guidelines. This includes orders restricting the size of indoor and outdoor private gatherings such as “house parties" and barbecues.

The children at the Arcola Daycare have been enjoying Cross Fit classes with Coach Amy from Living Skies Crossfit. She has promoted physical activity and has made it fun for the kids. Sympathy to Adrienne Vreys, Redvers Care Home, on the death of her mother, Jean Vreys. She was 104. Jean and Jack came to the villa together, and she missed him sorely. Some of his woodwork hangs on our walls.

Wawota residents active in the summer

By Myrna Olson Happy anniversary to George and Suzanne Eisler who celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on July 21.

Visiting with Saundra Corkish last week were Wayne and Linda Paxman of Red Deer, Alta.

Sympathy to the family of the late Annita Carpentier ( L' Arrive), who passed away on July 10 at the age of 82 years.

She was living in Regina and leaves her husband, Fabien, son Alvin (Keera) grandson

Anthony(Chelsey) and greatgrandsons Aedan, Connar and Tanner, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Family relations in our area include the Bunz, Charles , Luscombe and L’Arrive families. Annita used her artistic talent to create the choir girls displayed in the museum window every Christmas.

A bridal come and go shower was held at the Church of Christ at Kenosee Lake on July 26. This shower was in honor of Joey Lynn Petterson who will marry Brent Struble

on Aug. 21.

Word has been received of the passing of Dan Page on July 18, just one month shy of his 84th birthday. He passed away in Regina and his ashes will be interred at a later date in the Climax Cemetery. Dan was the RBC manager in Wawota in the 1970's. He leaves wife, Moira, children, Dawn, Denine and Devon, and their families. Sympathy to them all.

Word has been received of the passing of Gladys Henshilwood of Christina Lake, B.C. She passed away July 16 and was 98 years old. She was an aunt to Linda Birnie and Sandra Murray. Sympathy to all family members.

Brittany Olson and her fiancée Riley Schnell visited with the Olsons and Lamoureauxs last Monday.

Riley told us that his uncle had helped build our house and also Tom Weatherald's.

Apparently, he was employed

by Dale Metz in the 1970's.

It's a small world.

It is hard to listen to the news and not have some empathy for our American friends. With only four per cent of the world's population, they have 25 per cent of the world's coronavirus cases.

We hope those in charge, take charge in an appropriate fashion, bring in whatever rules are needed and get this pandemic under control.

COVID-19 and a flowering mysticism

By Ken Rolheiser COVID-19 is creating fear and panic as well as challenges for growth.

Coronavirus triggered suicides, fear of dying alone in isolation, and the guilt and difficulty of grieving where traditional funerals are not possible make these painful times.

Suicide hotline calls are up 300 per cent in the United States. But there is a spiritual upside. Fear of

death has led even some agnostics to contemplate hope in an immortal soul beyond this material world.

As with the Black Death, which killed 25 million in Europe, our world will have an opportunity to re-order its approach to spirituality during and after COVID-19. As then, many today warn about the judgment of God. Spiritual leaders in the church are turning toward Jesus for the answers.

During the Black Death, the Franciscans saw, in the crucified Christ, God’s entering into the suffering of humanity in order to redeem mankind. Julian of Norwich claimed that Christ’s emaciated and bloody body “resembled our foul, black death, which our fair, bright, blessed Lord bore for our sins.”

Today we witness a growth, a flowering mysticism, as contemporary American theologian Bernard McGinn described the spiritual growth of the 14th century. As then, this spiritual growth of today is in religious orders and lay religious life.

It would be well to remember that “Pain and suffering do not have the final say over human existence. Instead, they become a means by which God redeems souls who, through prayer, follow the footsteps of the crucified.” (COVID-19 and the Spiritual Life, Dale M. Coulter, April 14, 2020).

As the medieval Black Death caused a resurgence of individual spirituality, so today we are invited to turn inward and find Christ, in ourselves and in our homes. The isolation of COVID distancing has prepared us for this task. Church closures have forced us to find Jesus in our homes instead of seeking him in church.

The coronavirus has presented us with an opportunity for spiritual reassessment. Organized religion seemingly declined even before COVID-19.

As a result many now experience “a

sick soul, a weariness of heart, an existential dread, a sinking feeling that nothing really matters.” (American guru-author Deepak Chopra).

In The Coronavirus and the Need for Spiritual Well-Being, Chopra makes three key points: your soul is the most intimate part of you, and it isn’t found by running away; the spiritual effect of the COVID-19 outbreak cannot be neglected; and in a time of crisis, the impulse is to give in to fear, concern and panic, which will engender an epidemic of soul sickness.

COVID-19 affects us physically, mentally and spiritually, Chopra says. The physical response is about self-isolation, social distancing and testing. Mentally our best response involves meditation, yoga, and relaxation techniques to find joy and comfort in your lives.

But in the key area of spiritual effects, the state of our souls, Chopra suggests, we neglect our well being.

With the decline of organized religion millions have experienced the sick soul described above.

We are in a time of forced soulsearching. We do not need to spend money to find a place of solitude or retreat. We are already stuck inside in isolation, the place we can contemplate a growing mysticism.

The grace of Christ’s love still streams toward us from the eternal sacrifice of the cross. The churches are reopening, and Jesus has not abandoned us.

Lampman pays tribute to the Class of 2020

Residents of Lampman and the surrounding area came together Saturday to provide a unique celebration for Lampman School’s graduating class.

The town held a graduation celebration for the 13 students who comprised the Class of 2020. A traditional cap and gown celebration was supposed to happen in May, but it was cancelled due to COVID-19.

So on a beautiful afternoon in Lampman Saturday, people of all ages gathered to congratulate the grads and wish them the best in the next chapter of their lives.

It started with a parade down Main Street by the graduates, who were dressed in their finest clothes.

The parade was led by the town’s volunteer fire department. Many

people from the Lampman area lined both sides of the street to salute the grads. Some of the spectators carried signs.

Tammy Siebert, who was part of a parents committee that organized the festivities, was thrilled with the parade. In terms of attendance, she’s not sure how many people turned out to watch the parade, because the crowd was spread out down Main Street.

“We had a great turnout for it,” she told the Mercury.

Then the grads climbed aboard the fire truck and headed to the Lampman Health Centre so that the residents would be able to see the grads in their finery.

“I think they were very delighted,” Siebert said. “The residents were very happy to see them in their formal

attire, and I think they were very, very thrilled to have the grads come through, to be able to see them from their windows.”

Then there was a private graduation ceremony that Siebert said met Saskatchewan Health Authority regulations. She described it as “short and sweet.”

“We did some little bios on the kids,” said

Siebert. “There was a tribute to the parents, and then we had a guest speaker, a … retired teacher.”

Katie Weinrauch, who was this year’s valedictorian, also spoke to the grads.

After the ceremony, the crowd dispersed so that grads could spend time with their families.

Earlier this year,

the community had banners hanging on Corrigan Road/Highway 361, which is the road that passes in front of the school.

Each banner paid tribute to a grad.

Siebert said it took some time to plan Saturday’s celebrations.

Not only did they have to piece together the activities, but they needed to take current

regulations into account.

But the kids were very pleased that they were able to have the one last activity together for graduation.

Top of my personal list: the upcoming celebration of my brother and his wife’s 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations! I’d planned to attend but because of our mutual trepidation regarding flying at this time, I won’t be there.

Thank God for advances in technology that allow for long-distance hugs and greetings. Congratulations Doug and Pam. That same technology allows us to gather for church via Zoom. Alida residents enjoying visits Crops remain in good condition

By Edel Cowan Claire and Alice Mowchenko spent the past week, from July 2024, with their grandparents, Brian and Margaret Peet. While here they participated in swimming lessons and enjoyed time spent at the pool with their cousins Hudson, Lincoln and Jaxon.

Bobbi-Jo and her son Carson Morrow are spending some time visiting with her dad, Bob Harrison. While here they are also visiting her daughter Chrystal and enjoying some time at the pool.

I missed seeing Linda at the post office this past week as she has taken a few days off to spend time visiting with her son Ryan Akins, who is down from Cochrane, Alta., holidaying with his parents. Enjoy your visit Linda and Don, with your son as time does fly by.

A new family has moved to Alida and making their home on First Street West (the former Potapinski/Beriault/Boettcher house).

Welcome to Alida, Hal and Jennifer Peterson and to your son Anders and daughter Jamie.

Have you seen the comet? Hubby has been all keyed up and has spent a couple of nights checking out the skies. He was able to find the comet and mentioned that it was quite the sight. Kept telling me I should come out to see it, but I’m just not that ambitious or interested in it, even if I won’t be around to ever see another one in my lifetime.

How does your garden grow? Mine is so so, have had much better ones, but guess I shouldn’t be too surprised, since I can’t water it and just have to rely on Mother Nature. Now, since the rains, things are looking better, especially the cucumbers, we’ve had quite a few, even shared some and there are more coming. Granddaughter is enjoying the peas as they mature. Not sure what’s wrong with the squash and pumpkins, they seem to begin baring fruit and then the fruit just doesn’t do much, even spoils (maybe too moist or hot).

Potatoes are really looking good, will soon begin using them – oh nothing tastes as good as fresh potatoes. What beets and carrots I’ve got must grow fairly large to

make a tasty feast or two.

Oh well can’t win them all. There’s always next year.

Crops remain in relatively good condition and are advancing quickly, thanks to recent rain and warm weather, according to the Saskatchewan Agriculture weekly crop report.

Provincially, 89 per cent of fall cereals, 77 per cent of spring cereals, 74 per cent of oilseeds and 84 per cent of pulse crops are at their normal stages of development for this time of year. With further hot temperatures in the forecast, many crops are expected to quickly catch up.

Some crops in southern areas are beginning to dry-down and local producers expect harvest operations to begin in the

coming weeks.

Rainfall varied throughout the province this past week with many regions receiving at least half an inch. The Kuroki area in the east central region received the greatest amount of rainfall with 51 millimetres.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 84 per cent adequate, 11 per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay and pasture land topsoil moisture is rated as three

per cent surplus, 74 per cent adequate, 18 per cent short and five per cent very short.

Haying continues in between rain showers, although frequent rain and high humidity has prevented dry-down of many hay crops. Livestock producers now have 22 per cent of the hay crop cut and 20 per cent baled or put into silage. Hay quality is currently rated as 10 per cent excellent, 65 per cent good, 18 per cent fair and seven per cent poor.

Moose Creek Regional Park is a summer haven

Moose Creek Regional Park has lots to offer to the summer vacationer or anyone looking for a place to spend a relaxing summer afternoon in the outdoors.

The park is located on Grant Devine Lake (formerly named Alameda Dam), which was built in the 1980s to provide flood protection to communities along the Souris River.

The park offers boating, camping, fishing and golf, as well as hiking trails and a great view of the prairie landscape it is set in. It is located east of Alameda, with accesses from Highways 9 and 18, approximately 50 kilometres from Estevan.

The golf course is a nine-hole grass green course that is well maintained and features two sets of tee off boxes

for golfers of every skill level. The first and last hole both require well placed tee shots over a water-filled ravine.

The reservoir is great for boating, watersports and fishing, and runs for 23 kilometres. At full supply level, it reaches depths of 35 metres. There is a well-maintained beach and boat launch and a fish cleaning facility for the day’s catch.

The park is a very popular spot in the southeast of the province and is used by people from many area communities. There are 195 seasonal sites and 61 spots for regular camping.

The park is having a busy year; park manager Andrew Sinclair feels it is the busiest he has seen it in his four years there and the golf course is also having a very good year as well.
