By Kelly Johnson of the Carlyle Observer The Carlyle Cardinals captured the Saskota Baseball League championship on their home field in Lions Park on Tuesday night, winning the bestof-three league final series in two straight games over the Estevan Wolves.

The game was close all the way, with the wellbalanced Cardinals prevailing after a total team effort, winning 9-6 for the home fans who once again showed up to support the team. This was the first championship for

the Cardinals since 2016.

The final was between the two teams with the best records in the regular season. The Estevan Wolves bested the Carlyle Cardinals for first place in the regular season when they had a home field victory against them in a late season matchup in league play.

Both teams finished the season with 8-1-1 records.

Carlyle and Estevan both won a pair of best of three showdowns to start the playoffs, with neither team suffering a loss. Estevan disposed of their crosstown rivals,

the Southeast Fireballs, along with the Oxbow Chiefs to make this year’s championship final. The Cardinals rode the arms of Kody Rock and Dan Rasmussen, sweeping last year’s champions the Carnduff Astros, getting complete game performances from both pitchers and timely hitting that was spread throughout the lineup, meaning a total team effort.

They also swept the Kipling Royals.

The first game of the final went Monday night in Estevan with the Carlyle Cardinals throwing

Rock to the Wolves to start Game 1. The Cardinals again received timely hitting and lead this one all the way, taking advantage of solid pitching to win the opener 6-1 and giving them the opportunity to win a league championship at home on Tuesday.

Again the Cardinals got it started early with the bats, opening up the scoring with a two-run home run by Talen King and then loading the bases for Mason Crossman, who singled in two more runs, giving starting pitcher Dan Rasmussen a fourrun cushion.

The Cardinals stretched the lead to 5-0 in the second before the Wolves answered with a big fly of their own in the third and then going yard again with a two-run homer in the fourth after scoring a run on a single.

That left them down 5-4.

Once again the Cardinals enjoyed some timely hitting, scoring two more runs, going up 7-4 at the end the fourth.

The Wolves again had bite and scored one run in the top of the fifth inning, chasing Rasmussen from the mound.

The Cardinals again

scored in their at bat, making the lead four runs going to the sixth.

After a brief pitching appearance by Brent McLean in the fifth inning, out came Rock to mop up in the sixth.

The Wolves were not done, picking up a solo home run to make it a three-run game, but Rock was again solid on the mound and gave the Cardinals all they would need, closing out the Wolves with a final strikeout to bring home the league championship.

Congratulations to the Carlyle Cardinals.

Tyson Elliott spent two nights camping with his wife Kim and three children at Kenosee Lake.

TOTAL ARREARS AND COSTS $3,834.96

Tyson Elliott is from Warman and has been camping in the Lynwood Campground at Moose Mountain Provincial Park [MMPP].

Elliot was camping with his wife Kim and their three children for a couple of nights. Their fournight trip began at Manitou Beach near Watrous, when they decided that they could go to their favourite camping destination, and pulled up the tent pegs and headed south to Kenosee Lake. Deciding to come on the spur of the moment, with only the bare necessities, which was the tent and cooler they had packed, they bought a couple fold up chairs on arrival to make the stay more comfortable.

Elliot works as a group home coordinator in Saskatoon and his wife operates a daycare in Warman.

The Elliot family camps a couple times each summer, making the long trek to MMPP which is always one of the places they just have to visit.

They also like to camp at Eagle Creek Regional Park, which is about a 40-minute drive west of Saskatoon.

Last summer the family took a trip through the U.S., touring through Minneapolis and Chicago, and also passing through the states

of Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan, before reaching their destination of Toronto where they attended a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Elliot has camped at MMPP, discovering the park when he was playing baseball at a tournament in Wawota. He noted the Superslides as one of the facilities drawing his attention in the area.

Elliott first remembers camping with his parents and figures that his first time camping came as soon as his parents felt he was ready to travel.

He has camped at Kimball Lake, Prince Albert and Loon Lake in northern Saskatchewan but had never camped in the south until coming to MMPP to explore its amenities.

Elliott always has the campfire going at days end, toasting marshmallows, which are the children’s favourite, and enjoys cooking kabobs, hotdogs, steaks and anything else that you can burn over the fire.

Elliott is planning to take the family to camp in Northern California to see the Redwoods if travel is allowed into the U.S. next summer.

Elliott says that MMPP is his favourite place to camp and he recommends anyone looking to go for a camping trip to put Kenosee Lake on the top of the list.

Severe lightning storm caused damaging garage fire

By Dolores Young and Kelly Johnson A major storm moved through the southeastern corner of Saskatchewan on Aug. 12 and 13, with heavy rain, some hail and damaging lightning.

A building in south Carlyle was severely damaged by a fire that was caused by a lightning strike.

Deputy Fire Chief Rob Klassen verified to the Observer that the fire was from a lightning storm at approximately 4:55 a.m. on Aug. 13.

The two-storey building with a five-car garage on the lower level and living quarters on the top was struck by lightning which caused the fire.

When the first fire crews arrived, the roof was already engulfed by flames, so the crews set up a defence attack with an aerial truck and three hand lines.

Klassen said it was a “fairly intense” lightning storm.

The structure belonged to Sheila and Albert Boutin, and they say it was unoccupied at the time. The Boutins were awake around 4 a.m. as they were downstairs at their residence because of the lightning storm.

They went upstairs and as they were getting ready to go back to sleep.

Albert thought he smelled smoke; he went outside and looked around but saw nothing as the living quarters were on the other side of the garage closest to the house. Minutes later they heard voices outside and then the doorbell began ringing.

Brent Stillwell, employee of the Town of Carlyle and also a member of the fire department, was out checking on storm drains and noticed the smoke and fire, so he came to warn them

Fire and rescue personnel work on putting out hotspots at a residence in Carlyle about the fire.

Vehicles were able to be removed from the garage before the whole place went up in flames.

Boutin’s daughter Emma and her husband Dakota had just moved out May 15 and they were so happy that no one was there and no one got hurt.

Boutin is thankful for

their neighbours and the fast response of the fire department.

“It is so great living in a small town like this and the community pulls together to help one another,” said Boutin.

The storm was still in the area as the 10 firefighters battled the blaze.

moved from the burning structure and no damage was caused to the primary residence.

The fire department had the fire under control around 9 a.m. and had all hot spots extinguished shortly after 1 p.m. No injuries or loss of life occurred as a result of the fire.

Manor restaurant reopens

The community of Manor will again see a café operate out of the building at 42 Main Street.

Formerly known as Kevin’s Hamburger House, The Duck Inn and Manor Café, the 629 Family Restaurant opened on Aug. 15 and will be operated

by Tony and Tina Le, who originally came to Canada from Vietnam.

The original Duck Inn was opened by the

Doerr family and then was moved to the present location when it was operated by Ken and Regina Bye. The menu has a wide selection of Canadian and Chinese dishes and some Vietnamese cuisine as well.

The restaurant will open Thursday through Monday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., except for Saturdays, when it will open at 11 a.m. Customers will need to bring cash until the café has Interac for credit and debit cards.

Decency in politics begins with us

By Murray Mandryk There is likely no question I get asked more often than this one: whatever happened to decency in politics?

If nothing else, some four decades of close contact with a lot of politicians offers a fair bit of perspective on this matter.

My assessment? The current politicians are pretty good. Certainly, they’re no worse than what we’ve had in the past. One might even argue there’s been no time in recent political history when we have seen so many of our political leaders rise to the occasion.

Of course, many will take umbrage with this.

They will point to the shuttered economy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and certainly bring up the WE scandal in Ottawa that was, unquestionably, a ridiculous blunder that should not be tolerated by taxpayers.

Or, depending on their political persuasion, they might point to the Saskatchewan Party government’s bungled school re-opening policy. This appears to be a case of not providing the leadership required, dumping the tough divisions on local school divisions with limited resources and little authority.

Clearly, mistakes are also a reality. And given that it’s our tax dollars that have to pay to fix these mistakes, we surely have the right to complain and criticize.

But it’s how some of us react to these mistakes made by politicians, or even things that politicians do that aren’t really mistakes, that speaks to the real problem of decency.

The first problem with some in the public is a complete and total loss of perspective.

There are always reasons to criticize politicians, but the outrage we are seeing from some is completely disproportional.

Heck, the WE scandal isn’t even the worst we have seen from the federal Liberals when compared with the sponsorship scandal that cost much more, and rightly ousted the Liberals from power for a decade.

In this province, we have seen a government caucus set up a secret scheme to convert communication expense allowances into cash that was handed over to MLAs, a scheme that resulted in 20 convictions of Progressive Conservative MLAs and staff.

But if social meeting posting or the unhinged rants from supposed professional media personalities were to be believed, you’d think we now have the most corrupt politicians ever.

To make matters worse, some people see biased social media or thinly veiled partisans in the mainstream media as their only source of information.

This lack of objective news sources only irresponsibility feed the outrage against politicians with whom they don’t generally agree. It is here where lines are being crossed.

Indecency isn’t the reasonable and criticism of government policy. It is now and has been vile and potentially dangerous behaviour and, sadly, we may be seeing more of that.

Recently, Regina police charged a man with leaving threatening voicemails against Premier Scott Moe last week.

Whatever you thing of Moe as person (and, frankly, he seems a rather decent one) he clearly doesn’t deserve this.

But the sad reality is Moe is not the only politician to be victimized by this abuse.

A favourite target in federal politics is federal Infrastructure and Communities Minister Catherine McKenna who has been the frequent target of abuse.

Most recently, the Ottawa police hate crimes unit is investigating after a man screamed obscenities outside her constituency office. That the man felt the need to post his 90 seconds of vile outrage on social media says much.

And then there are the charges against Manitoban Corey Hurren, who rammed his truck through the gates of Rideau Hall while allegedly carrying four loaded firearms and uttering threats against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

It’s indecency now in the realm of madness.

And far and away, the greatest problem right now seems to be some people rather than the politicians themselves.

Remembering Laura, remembering Laurie

Shelley Luedtke My husband and I lost a good friend on May 17. Her name was Laurie and she was one of the most special people I’ve had the good fortune to know.

We shared in every major and minor event in our lives: birthdays, jobs, weddings, baptisms, games weekends, movie marathons, Christmas, and one of my favorite — a graduation party we surprised her with when she became a registered nurse.

Laurie laughed freely and loved fully, and even though we lived more than two hours apart, we were together often and have an amazing storehouse of memories built on a friendship we treasured.

The news that she was gone hit us hard.

She had been battling an illness for a few years but I guess we expected she would bounce back, since she’d done so before. Her death wasn’t COVID-19 related, but the marking of it certainly was. There were no gatherings over 10 at that time so no funeral to attend. No chance to hug her sisters. No opportunity to grieve together.

Then our pastors stepped in and suggested we have a memorial service. With their kind and caring presence we gathered in our backyard; 10 people, and others on Facetime, to hear words of comfort and strength, and to share in the experience of grieving someone we loved. There were tears and there was laughter—just like you might expect—on the beautiful afternoon in May when she was remembered.

A few summers ago a trip to South Dakota took my family to the town of De Smet, the setting of several of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

You can wander the homestead, tour the house that Pa built in town, and look through

items belonging to each member of the family.

You can also visit the cemetery where several of the Ingalls' family are buried. A chain link fence cordons off their graves where you will find fresh flowers and handwritten notes left by tourists who felt compelled to mark the moment.

A glance at nearby plots reveals names readers of the books would remember, but others that were unfamiliar. Yet chances are their stories would have been remarkably similar to those whose names we knew. Pioneering families that lived in the same area. They too would have settled the land, planted crops, built homes, started families, fought fires, experienced droughts, and worked to secure education for their children.

Perhaps their stories weren't recorded and handed down – but then again maybe they were.

The stories shared at kitchen tables, family gatherings, and yes, funerals, are the source of inspiration, generational awareness, folklore and humour; and it helps put personality

and legacy to what otherwise would be known only as numbers: the number of settlers in a given area, the tally of those ill with various diseases, or even the number that died while establishing a homestead.

Somewhere, in a lab or office setting, Laurie's information will be added to the cumulative total of Canadians who have died from kidney disease this year. Her death will become part of a bigger collection of data for funding and research. Those numbers tell an overall story of its prevalence across our nation, but say nothing of the individuals whose life was so much more than their cause of death.

It's easy to get lost in the numbers. But whether it’s hunger or heart attacks; disaster or dislocation, cancer or COVID-19, those we have lost are so much more than the diagnosis and the data. They deserve to be remembered and their stories have to be told. We need the opportunity to express what it means to have a Laurie in our lives.

That's my outlook.

Harcourt wins Moose Mountain Classic at Golf Kenosee

By Kelly Johnson of the Carlyle Observer The Moose Mountain Classic golf event was held on August 15 and 16, with 104 golfers entered to play in the annual two-day competition at Golf Kenosee.

The golfers enjoyed good weather both days for the long-running event that features flights for men, women and seniors. The tournament also features a

Saturday “horse race.”

This year’s men’s champion is Carson Harcourt from Kipling who is a member at Golf Kenosee, and the 2020 women’s champion is Ella Kozak from Yorkton who is a member of the Deer Park Municipal Golf Course in Yorkton.

This was Harcourt’s first win at the classic, and he also won the Saturday horse race. He led by two strokes after the first day over Shawn McNall, and stretched that

lead on the second day to win by 11 strokes, to capture the championship.

Ella Kozak also was a first-time women’s champion at the classic and this was her first time playing in the event. She finished at 7 over par.

Saskatchewan Senior Amateur champion Rick Halberg held off Paul Grimes to win the senior’s championship at this year’s Moose Mountain Golf Classic.

Carson Harcourt is the 2020 Moose Mountain Classic men’s champion.

Golfer of the Week a champion at the classic

Ella Kozak is from Yorkton, and was golfing in the Moose Mountain Classic golf competition, which is held annually at Golf Kenosee in Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

Kozak started golfing, encouraged by her father to take up the sport, when she was seven years old. She remembers playing Golf Kenosee once previously when she was a junior and just beginning to learn the game.

She started to enter competitions around

the age of 11, and has played many events in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, winning at the Tor Hill Course in Regina and at the Elwood Course in Swift Current.

Kozak placed third in the Saskatchewan Women’s Amateur in Warman this year.

Deer Park in Yorkton is her home course where she has a club membership; she has played Woodlawn in Estevan, Moon Lake and The Willows in Saskatoon and many other courses around the province.

The most memorable course she has played outside Saskatchewan is Pinehurst in North Carolina, mentioning the beautiful scenery the course offers, and also mentions the Marine Drive Course in Florida as a particularly scenic golf course. She recommends Pinehurst as a course that every golfer should play if they have the opportunity of being in the area, she hopes someday to tee it up at Pebble Beach in northern California if she could choose any golf destination to play.

Kozak uses Ping woods, irons and wedges and a Scotty Cameron putter, and likes to play the Titleist ProV 1 ball.

Her lowest round to date is a even-par 72 at the Legends Golf Course in Warman and she has one hole in one at the Niakwa Golf Club in Winnipeg, doing the magic on the par 3, 130-yard, second hole

with an 8 iron.

Kozak’s favourite golfer is the PGA’s Lexi Thompson, who was the youngest golfer to ever qualify for the Women’s U.S. Open championship, thanks to Thompson’s length off the tee.

Alida news: happiness, sadness and rain Submitted By Edel Cowan Bill and Kathy Anthony had their family, Willa, Mitch and Riley, all home for a few days during the first week in August to help them pack up and move their belongings from the farm acreage to their new residence (the former Ben Peterson home) in Alida. Welcome to Alida, folks. Hope you enjoy your new home in town.

The Alida Community extends sincere sympathy to Ralph and Shelia White on the death of their son Gordon White of La Glace, Alta., formerly of Glen Ewen, who passed away on Aug. 11, at the age of 55 years at the Prairie Lake Hospice. He is survived by his wife Ellen and their five children, two grandchildren, his parents and five siblings as well as numerous nieces. Condolences are also extended to all family members.

I’m a little late with this announcement, but as they say it’s better late than never. David and Shanna Carriere welcomed a new granddaughter Braelee Lynn on May 12. Her parents are Travis and Lyndsey Carriere of Redvers. Congratulations everyone.

Visitors with Gary and Brenda Junk for a week were their daughter Kara and granddaughter Morgan Applegate (Sylvan Lake, Alta). Then on Aug. 11, Gloria Girard and Dave Ince (Sylvan Lake), Brenda, Kara, Morgan, April Junk and family all visited with Grandma Dot outside at Sunset Haven in Carnduff to help Dot celebrate her 90th birthday. Happy birthday Dot from Alida – and may you

have many more.

Visiting at noon with Bud Phenix on Aug. 14 were friends Don and Gail Lees from Arcola.

Well we finally received a decent amount of rain this past week – it will surely help the garden and should help mature the crops. My garden was surely dry. Most of the vegetation was drying up so this rain will help the cucumbers, and other vines produce. Tomatoes are just beginning to ripen on the vine now – oh they are so delicious and I’ve got cucumbers coming out of my ears, can see them in my dreams (lol).

Potatoes aren’t too bad and they too taste so much better fresh out of the garden. It’s definitely fall – all garden produce is ready to eat, but we’re waiting on the corn – hope the coons and deer don’t get it first. Appreciate the feed of corn Brenda – it was sooooo good. The men here are have now starting with the harvest, busy swathing canola fields and some spraying has been done, so again they’ll probably soon be starting up the combine and the wheat fields will be harvested. There has been some harvesting done in the area – I presume peas, etc. Good luck fellas with the harvest and take special care while operating those big machines.

Job Posting: Recovery Coach Job Details: The Recovery Coach is a therapeutic guide journeying with patients on their road of recovery from admission to at least the first year of their recovery. Recovery Coaches provide assessments and contribute insightful, practical, and meaningful information to the development of treatment planning. Team members welcome and orientate patients who are in primary treatment to the recovery process. Recovery Coaches provide support in the form of, but not limited to, individual recovery support, sharing of personal stories of recovery and group activities such as during support group meetings like AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), NA (Narcotics Anonymous), and CMA (Crystal Meth Anonymous) etc. As a member of the treatment team, the Recovery Coach meets daily in a collaborative fashion with the team to discuss patient progress, resident group dynamics, and make any necessary adjustments to treatment plans.

A Recovery Coach must possess personal experiential knowledge of addiction disorders and a thorough understanding of life and recovery foundations and be willing to participate in supporting patients from a personal experiential perspective.

The below list is a guideline and may not be inclusive of all expected duties on a day-today basis. A Recovery Coach is required to prioritize and respond to the needs of the daily operations of St. Joseph’s Addiction and Recovery Centre in a professional and calm manner.

• Meets with patients regularly to establish therapeutic relationships • Completes patient orientation to the recovery centre and to recovery.

• In collaboration with the Clinical Manager, reviews and supports patients’ progress and supports the Treatment Integration • Plan during the treatment process and during the first week of a patient being admitted.

• Supports patients in identifying weekly individualized treatment goals.

• Provides timely information to the clinical team.

• Provides private and scheduled individual recovery coaching sessions.

• Maintains excellent charting.

• Facilitates specialized recovery groups as assigned.

• Contacts alumni on a scheduled basis to do check-ins and determines the need for additional supports as required.

• Facilitates group interaction, workshops and educational groups on site as directed by the program schedule.

• Assesses suicidality and possibility for danger to self or others.

• Begins and ends group activities in a timely manner.

• Attends all treatment planning meetings, and goal setting groups, in-service training, and general staff meetings.

• Enters all completion details into the electronic medical record and tracks outcomes.

• Helps to plan and execute alumni activities as well as alumni engagement initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS • Preference will be given to Recovery Coaches who identify themselves as being in recovery.

All Recovery Coaches will have a minimum of 2 years of recovery.

• Experience in supporting people who are chemically dependent or people who have other process or concurrent disorders.

• Experience facilitating 12 step groups.

• If the applicant is in recovery, they will be required to identify that they have been abstinent from mood altering substances for two years at the time of application.

Harvest is underway in southeast Saskatchewan

This year’s crop is on its way to the bin and market, with some farmers getting into the field the first week of August.

Fall rye has been combined in some locations and other crops, such as barley and peas, are coming off as well.

Saskatchewan has over 44,000 farms with over 55,000 operators who will harvest seven million acres of cropland in the coming weeks and months.

Most of the crops in this area of the province are looking very good, having good early soil moisture at seeding and timely rains in most areas. Also, there has been a low number of damaging storms

and few reports of hail causing damage to crops.

Early reports on crops that are in the bin have yields of close to sixty bushels to the acre on field peas, and barley yields of over a hundred bushels to the acre.

This year there is good expectations of quality throughout the different crops, mainly canola, peas, lentils, wheat, barley and flax making up the highest number of acres, with durum wheat, corn, soybeans and sunflowers in some areas as well.

Early reports have higher than average yields on the crops that have been combined, once everything is combined and in the bin is when it all can be assessed as to the kind of year each operator has had.

Farmers have taken to the fields to harvest what should be a bountiful crop, working into the night to get the seeds of their labour into the bin.

The tenants association met with Angela Penner, with Ralph Burke serving as chairperson. He asked that people bring him their concerns beforehand, to help him set up an agenda.

In the eight years since she moved to the Villa, Janet Mark has met 80 tenants. She moved a vote of confidence and appreciation to manager Angela Penner and her staff, for the wonderful care and attention given to us. The many strange regulations required by COVID-19 have made her work very difficult.

Joyce Gillies expressed all our concerns about COVID-19. “It is not going away! Let us

do all we can to make life easier for each other.” That afternoon she called Bingo, rather than see it cancelled. Many preferred the TV to be off at mealtime, as that is one time we can share with each other.

Janet will remain as reporter, “As long as I can see to type,” or unless anyone else wants the job.

Charlotte Kovach brought in a movie and popcorn and Mary Thiessen led a hymn sing in the courtyard.

We can have two visitors in our room or courtyard, but they must sign in and out, as the sheets are kept for possible COVID tracking. Barbara Dennis took Ruth out to lunch in Moosomin. Dolores and Joanne Donais visited her that afternoon. Al and Val Robertson visited with Ralph Burke in “the beautiful courtyard.”

Joyce Gillies had a great visit with Sharon Beutler and Kim Zacaruk. Larry and Marion Husband had a morning visit with Irene, Janet Mark’s niece, Caroline Houston and John Lykye, who live on an acreage south of Regina. He came on his motorcycle and enjoyed the courtyard with her.

Sympathy to Werner Skappel and Jeffery on the passing of Werner's mother, Hilda Skapple of Minton. She passed away on July 28 at the age of 64 years .She leaves her husband, Wayne, family, Werner, Andrew and Ashlee and their families. A graveside service was held Aug. 1 at the Lesja Scandinavian Cemetery at Minton.

Born to Ellen and Jordan Fox on the birth of their daughter. She weighed 10 pounds, two ounces, and has been named Brinley Rae. She is a granddaughter for Wade and Teresa Fox and Ed and Shannon Revet.

Word has been received of the passing of Gladys (Harrison) Duarte of Indianapolis, Indiana. She was 90 years old. She was one of the older children of the 11 in Harry and Edith Harrison's family.

Jordan and Ana Lyn Trinidad, along with Dana and Jamir have moved into their new home on Lon-

sdale Avenue. It was the former Ruth Dennis home and more recently the Ernest Hourd home.

Sympathy to Don and Brenda Horvath, as well as Dean and Delaine and family on the passing of Don's father, Jim Horvath. He passed away in Regina on Aug. 10 at the age of 96 years. He leaves wife Agnes, sons Don and Glen and their families.

Approximately 40 people gathered at the Walpole Cemetery last Wednesday for a graveside ceremony in honor of the late Pat Sotkowy.

Pat who was the last of the Shatford family passed away in March a few days shy of her 90th birthday.

Dennis Niebergall and son Cash from Stoney Mountain, Alta., visited with Stan and Bev Niebergall last week. Dennis took part in his annual golf tournament at Kenosee with friends.
