Photo/chadbrownlee.com Country music is high on the popularity list in and around Souris, Manitoba and judging from the success of past concert like Aaron Pritchett and Doc Walker, the upcoming Chad Brownlee concert is sure to please any discerning country music fan.

Brownlee, accompanied by Manitoba favourite, Ryan Keown will be in Souris May 21.

Keeping current in a small community is important to the health, welfare and livelihood of that community. More and more often, small town see their residents head off to bigger centres to enjoy cultural activities and that hurts local business. Some accept it as a sign of the times, but others, like Souris, Manitoba see it as a challenge, a challenge to create events and activities to spur on interest in their own town.

The Souris Events committee does not have a “roll over and play dead attitude,” you can bet your life on that. They are actively searching for events that will give their residents a reason to stay home. And it’s not just their own residents that they are trying to keep interested. This committee is determined to create something so good that people will come from miles around just to take part.

They have done it for that past three years and this year is no different. Country star, Chad Brownlee will be performing at the Souris memorial Complex on May 21 and tickets are on sale now.

committee is comprised of four Souris Glenwood user groups, the Chamber of Commerce, the Memorial Complex, the Agricultural Society and the Fire Department. Each of these organizations puts up seed money and supplies volunteers for the labour intensive planning that goes into an event as big and popular as a Chad Brownlee concert. They are not strangers to this type of work by any means.

They have held concerts in the past. Some, Like Doc Walker and Aaron Pritchett were wildly successful and others, like Beverly Mayhood and Nazareth were less so but according to Souris Glenwood Economic Development officer, Lon Turner, it isn’t always about making money. “I am fairly new to this position so this is my first concert.

I know they didn’t make money at a couple of the past ones and that they did on a couple more, but that’s not why they continue to do it,” Turner explained. “This committee believes that they are working to promote the community of Souris. They want to bring people here to let them see that this is a community worth fighting for.”

children and larger ones for the more adventurous, is amazing for families. The fastest growing sector of the global food industry – organic - is the reason for the neat little red of�ice based in Miniota, known as OPAM. The Organic Producers Association of Manitoba, started with an of�ice in Virden in the summer of 1988.

Twenty-eight years later the business is showing steady growth and staff are very busy this time of year.

A group of people, with a mandate to develop certi�ication for organic producers, was on to something all those years ago. The public’s appetite for organic food has continued to grow, evidenced by organic certi�ied products in regular grocery stores in regular towns such as Virden, where the Valleyview Consumers Co-op food store carries organic dairy, fruit, vegetables and processed products. Organic meat products are sometimes available there as well.

Initially, these items were strictly the purview of specialty stores, markets and farm-gate businesses, but growing consumer demand has elbowed room on main stream grocery shelves for organic certi�ied food.

A study in 2013 reveals that Canada’s organic market grew to $3.7 billion in 2012....

The value of the Canadian organic food market has tripled since 2006, far outpacing the growth rate of other agri-food sectors according to the Canadian Organic Trade Organization.

With as many as 58 percent of all Canadians

buying organic products weekly, who is growing these products? Aside from the exotic fruits such as organic bananas, and off-season vegetables, Canadian growers are taking up the challenge.

Laura Telford, with Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, is an organic marketing specialist based in Portage La Prairie at the Food Development Centre, and a valuable support for Canada’s organic industry.

OPAM, out of Miniota, is the only certi�ier with an of�ice in Manitoba, and offers professional organic certi�ication services to Canadian clients wishing to market products in Canada, the US and Europe. They �ield a number of inspectors who tour producers and processors, as a means to validate the organic certi�ication.

Melanie Rivard, OPAM’s Certiďż˝ication Coordinator says, “Organic certiďż˝ication has gotten slowly busier with inquiries year after year. This year, it’s crazy. People are really looking into becoming organic.â€?

At one point, about ďż˝ive years ago, OPAM was struggling. Staff was cut and the ofďż˝ice moved from Virden to Miniota. “We had a tough time when moved. But with the demand for organic so much bigger than the suppliers, we managed to weather the storm,â€? she says. The ofďż˝ice also employs Tiffany Priestly, and Linda Rogalsky-Tapp an administrative assistant.

At this point, there are only about three certi�ied market gardens in Manitoba. OPAM is the certi�ier for a grower at Notre Dame De’Lourde.

Whereas it used to be difďż˝icult to ďż˝ind a seed cleaner or a livestock processor, now there are more being certiďż˝ied every year, “all driven by demand, on both endsâ€?, says Rivard.

The innovative company, Canadian Prairie Garden Purees, a processing plant at Portage La Prairie, is OPAM certi�ied.

The Food Development Centre at Portage, serving as a one-stop shop for research and product development, is also OPAM certiďż˝ied. “It’s a very exciting year for us. Last year we ended up with a net growth of three producers – a four percent increase. This year we anticipate up to a 10 percent growth,â€? says Rivard.

OPAM takes no part in the marketing aspect of the business, but does guide members toward conferences and workshops. A potluck meal held at Rapid City this February brought growers together and later on, the yearly �ield day gives producers an opportunity see each other’s businesses at work.

OPAM now serves an expanded area beyond

Manitoba, including Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. At the annual meeting held March 12, in Brandon, new board members replaced those stepping off the board of directors. After six years on the board, Glen Elliott from Pipestone and Glen Echert from Wappella stepped off, but remain producers.

OPAM has made it easier for smaller or intensive producers to become certiďż˝ied. “For a quarter section or under, there is a signiďż˝i-

cantly reduced rate. Before that, basically if you had a small operation it didn’t make sense,â€? explains Rivard. “What we’re ďż˝inding is that a lot of young people are getting interested in organics. They may not have as much land to work with as they might like.â€? “Some people who haven’t been to a meeting in a long time were kind of amazed at where we’ve got to,â€? she adds.

The new plant comes with a $6.9 million dollar price tag; cost shared three ways between the local, provincial and federal governments. The money comes from the “Building Canada Fund.”

“We will still be drawing surface water from the reservoir. The new plant will utilize two UF (Ultra Filtration) membranes followed by two

Reverse Osmosis membranes. The existing plant was a lime soda ash style plant.

“In recent years membrane technology has changed (to deal with surface water), so to deal with the current water standards, our engineers (Aecom) decided to go with this technology to remove organics,” said Corkish.

The storage capacity

of the new plant will be double that of the old plant. “The �low rates will allow us to make water faster. For example, the old plant was capable of making 7.2 liters/second while the new one will be capable of between 12-15 liters/ second,” added Corkish.

If there is a power outage, the generator will start up automatically.

Also, there will be water

storage for approximately two days.

“We received both the provincial and federal portions of the funding and have made the �irst phase payment,” said Gord Weidenhamer, Reeve of Municipality of Deloraine-Winchester.

An Open House is planned once operations are completely turned over from the old to new water plant.

Precision Ag in Carlyle is very excited about the new addition to their facility just south of Carlyle along Hwy 9. The state of the art fertilizer blending plant which has been built has received a lot of attention from the farming community because of its capabilities.

Dan Reaves, Sales Manager with Precision Ag, explained, “This is a long term investment for Precision Ag has ever made and we are passionate about it because our customers are extremely excited about it.� “The old plant took time to blend and load.

In a season farmers have about 20 days to seed and they don’t want to waste those days. This system is unbelievably fast. On the old system, depending on the mix, 30 metric tonnes took about half an hour to load. The other day on our new system we did that in seven minutes.� “We’re so excited because in the past it took days for someone to get all their fertilizer home and now they can be done in a day.�

The fertilizer plant – a 6,000 metric tonne shed – was built with eight bulk separations along with a micro nutrient hopper and impregnation ability for micronutrients and urease inhibitors. “We presently handle over 12 different bulk fertilizers,� Reaves explained.

The facility is built entirely of concrete, wood, and stainless steel. “This fertilizer plant was built to last. It will

be here for 80 years, I’ll be long gone and it will still be running,� Reaves smiled. “A bin fertilizer system usually only lasts about 12 years.�

The importance of the fertilizer plant was realized as Precision Ag’s number one concern is their customers. “By using the right components and blending them quickly, we’re selling them time and that’s exciting,� Reaves says. “We invested in this asset as our customers invest with us when they support Precision Ag Services.� “I’m excited about this facility, but I’m even more excited that our customers are excited.�

Reaves says that he has been in the agriculture industry for the past 26 years and it has only been in the past ďż˝ive or six years that he’s seen advancements in fertilizer innovations. “There have been exciting new products coming out that will allow us to provide a better blend for our customers,â€? Reaves explained. “We take the lab recommendations of soil samples and look at pH, organic matter, mineralization of the soil, cation exchange capacity, and base saturations to understand the medium [soil] we’re in, so the purchase our customer is making is positively impacting the soil.â€? “There’s a lot more to fertilizer than just reading the lab recommendations.â€? “Different crops have different use rates of nutrients and when looking at the soil tests we can decide on the right blend and the right products to

Photo by Kelly Running The fertilizer plant – a 6,000 metric tonne shed – has recently been built at Precision Ag in Carlyle. “The old plant took time to blend and load,” Dan Reaves, Sales Manager, explained. “In a season farmers have about 20 days to seed and they don’t want to waste those days. This system is unbelievably fast. On the old system, depending on the mix, 30 metric tonnes took about half an hour to load. The other day on our new system we did that in seven minutes.”

The large fertilizer plant was an investment made to ensure farmers have access to high quality and quickly loaded fertilizer.

“Each load is calculated and controlled by a computer, which weighs and distributes the correct mix,” Reaves said.

“The R.M. was awesome to work with. We currently only have one out load, which I think will be enough for now because it goes so quickly, but if we need to, the R.M. has said that we have the option of putting a second out load on the building, so expansion is possible.”

“What we try to do here at Precision Ag is work with the customer,” Reaves explained.

Fourteen month old, Nuala Duncan Harkness, was born at the Virden Hospital, January 2015. She was delivered by Dr. Hamel and the paramedics.

The beautiful little girl has been participating in Canadian Pageants since she was six months old.

Peatrah Harkness (the mother of Nuala) said, “In Canada the pageants are really natural and not a lot of glitz like what you would see on TV... There are a lot of negative opinions about pageants, which we are trying to get the word out about that it is very positive.”

Nuala currently holds the title of National Canadian Baby Miss Manitoba with the National Canadian Girl Pageants.

Harkness explained, “We started going to Regina for them and as we got a little more familiar with the system we learned of a scholarship program; it’s the only one in Canada, so it

is not a beauty pageant.

It started in B.C. and the founder has brought it across Canada. It isn’t working out very well in Manitoba, there are very few participants.”

In July Nuala is going to Nationals; at the pageant, there is $24,000 worth of scholarships that will be awarded.

The Nationals is a fourday long event that is being held at the West Edmonton Mall. “She has been provided tools to help her fundraise and seek sponsors to help cover her costs of this opportunity. As one of the few Manitoba participants, it would be great to have our community supporting her along this journey.”

Harkness continued, “As part of her obligations she is requested to raise money for the Manitoba Children’s Hospital. Nuala is also building necessities kits for local homeless, as the shelter beds are no longer available at the end of the month.

Nuala will be making as many appearances at local events such as we can find.”

For the fourth time in nine years, Virden Ford is to be recognized as a 2015 President’s Award Diamond Club winner by Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited. It’s Ford of Canada’s highest honour, presented annually to dealerships who demonstrate outstanding achievement in sales and customer satisfaction.

“Our success is driven by our strong customer

relationships and our ties to the Virden community,” says Virden Ford general manager, Darin Banga. “We’re proud to earn the President’s Award Diamond Club distinction because it shows that our customers appreciate our team’s commitment to service excellence.”

The Ford dealership in Virden was established many decades ago. Nine years ago, Darin Banga saw something that excited him here, which drew him from Carlyle,

Saskatchewan to Virden, to take over the dealership. “We bought the dealership in January 2007,” he says.

Business grew. In 2011 there were renovations to the dealership. Having set the bar, Banga says the challenge has been to live up to expectations.

“We grew a business in the �irst couple of years by doubling and tripling it. And then trying to keep that level of achievement and still maintain quality customer service.”

Banga has assembled

a team of 22 employees for just that purpose – to provide sales, service, parts and auto body service.

“It’s all about the customer and having the right people in the right place,” states Banga.

“Surrounding myself with good people, good quality staff at Virden Ford. The rest takes care of itself.”

When asked about his personal motto, he says, “Don’t give someone something to do if you’re not prepared to do it

yourself, I’m very much a hands on leader.”

Ford of Canada introduced The President’s Award in 2000. Dealers become eligible through excellence in dealership operations and exceptional customer feedback through survey responses related to their sales and service satisfaction and overall dealership experience.

The Virden Ford team has won the award four times in the last nine years and remains dedicated to Virden and sur-

rounding communities, supporting a number of different local charities and causes through dealer-run fundraising initiatives. Past recipients of fundraising efforts include the Virden Junior A Oil Capitals of the Manitoba Junior Hockey Leagues, Wallace and District Fire Departments, the annual Virden Indoor Rodeo and Fort La Bosse School Division.

Virden Ford continues to support its community and customers into 2016.
