It’s no secret that the state of the oil industry affects us all-especially here in the southeast corner of the province. The Observer spoke to a cross-section of citizens from our area.

Here are their thoughts: Martin Tourand, Carlyle. Owner, Ron’s The Work Wear Store Ltd., Secretary Carlyle & Area Chamber of Commerce, Carlyle Town Councillor.

“The downturn in the oil

economy, although worrisome, isn’t as bad as other places, notably Alberta. I really think that Saskatchewan as a whole is better off because we are more diversified than other places.

With potash, farming, and construction still ongoing in our province we do have more to fall back on for the economy than just oil. My father used to have a saying, ‘Farming is our bread and butter, oil is the gravy.’

I think this is the saving grace of our province. Our customers, although not as many, are still out there doing what they can to keep going forward. We are a little luckier maybe than most, our customers are very loyal, and if they need product are still coming in to see us. We are still doing what we have to, business-wise, to keep going forward. The mix of product, amounts of stock we carry, etc. are all

things we have had to implement to keep ourselves viable and relevant. The people of this province, as well as its businesses, are resilient, and we will find a way to carry on as we always have. This is my fourth time through the oil ups and downs. Although it has always been a source of short-term pain, we have always come through it stronger and I don’t expect it to be any less this time.

We are already starting to hear some talk from OPEC about slowing the oil output and this can only be a good thing.”

December is always a big month-that’s to be expected with Christmas hampers. January was big, and I’m expecting this to be the new normal.”

“The food bank pantry is in the Carlyle United Church. The area communities we serve include Arcola, Carlyle, Forget, Kisbey, Manor, Redvers, Stoughton, Wawota and surrounding areas. I’m really impressed by what

I’ve seen so far. Food drives held during the fall and into winter really helped and people have really come out and donated.

But the need for food is ongoing and with the economy the way it is in the southeast right now, we’ll continue to need donations to keep our shelves ready to help those in need.”

It was our first year joining CFY and concentrating on local families, so I can’t compare it to past years. But I can say that we provided gifts to over 150 families in our little area, which took in more communities than you might think and included families that you wouldn’t have thought might be affected this way. It’s pretty widespread within our area.”

Deputy Mayor. “I think we’ve got people affected by the downturn. In our community, young people have lost jobs because of it. Fortunately, some employers have taken steps like cut wage rates or reduce hours in an effort to keep people employed.

This causes employees to rethink how they live and certainly, spending is affected.”

“Many retired people in the area receive royalties from oil companies and have for years. These royalties form a part of their retirement income at a time when someone is no longer able to bridge the income gap with employment.”

“In those ways, our

community has been affected. Down the road, we in the village could certainly be affected if young people get in a situation where they can’t for example, meet their obligations to the village like taxes and utilities. I certainly hope not. When you think about the people that directly do the drilling, the contractors... it’s everybody. Everyone’s affected somehow.”

“There’s going to be a lot of families that have a significantly lower income per household than they did before and in some cases, the workload will shift from one partner to the other. There are already changes to the community as a result of a lot of guys who are usually working

at this time of the year and now, aren’t. A concern for a community when an industry is affected is that people relocate, real estate is affected, and there is a higher dependence on food banks and social services.”

“But it’s also a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community.

In a sense, it refocuses Carlyle and area. We return to relying on our neighbours and a sense of pride in our community and its people that we’ve maybe neglected. But it’s a mixed sense of opportunity and concern at the same time.”

“With the low Canadian dollar, we have a lot to offer with tourism-especially here with the beautiful Moose Mountains up the road and all of the amenities in Carlyle.”

“What happens in the oil industry affects us all and in the meantime, we’ve got to help each other out and work on investing in our local capital, volunteering and community giving. Our pocketbooks might be a little thinner, but hopefully, our hearts can be a little bigger.”

Executuve Director, Envision Counselling Centre. “We are seeing a direct impact at Envision Counselling with the services we provide in the southeast. All of our offices are operating at capacity, with

the need for expansion to keep up with the demand in counselling and support services. We provide counselling for families in crisis and individuals experiencing interpersonal violence in our Carlyle office specifically, with statistics on the rise 15 per cent from last year at this time. Last September, after providing a clinic in Oxbow one day a week, we opened up the space to start a parttime office, offering the same services as Carlyle, to assist individuals in the far southeast part of the province. Obviously, with individuals out of work, this impacts families as a whole, but it also impacts the stress levels people are experiencing, which encompasses life-changing events for many of us.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Darren Simons, Carlyle detachment. “We’re not seeing as much heavy traffic on the highways or as many heavy vehicles.

But we are seeing other people who are taking unnecessary risks-by speeding more and speeding for longer distances. Even with lower truck traffic, we’re still seeing collisions on highway intersections. Even though traffic volume has changed, the RCMP urge motorists to drive safely.”

“We haven’t seen an uptake regarding people accessing our services yet, but we’re prepared. Sun Country Health Region has mental health and addictions services available to all residents of the region. Wherever possible, services are provided without disrupting people’s normal daily activities and routines. Mental health can be affected by a variety of environmental and socioeconomic factors and economic issues may have mental health impacts. For referrals to Mental Health

In an email, Cugnet stated the following: “Sun Country Health Region has received no increase in calls for mental health/addiction services or other health services. However, SCHR has received a 234 per cent increase in job applications in all areas. The downturn may also impact funding available for capital upgrades, so some regional projects may be deferred when funding is limited.”

“Not to downplay the effect of the current oil sector slowdown, but traditionally, the winter months are a slower turnaround time to move property. The volume in last year’s sales over the previous year were down a few notches, but better in the rural SE area than in the larger centres of Estevan and Weyburn.”

“An interesting thing to note was experienced in the Kenosee Lake area where it was evident that the rising Kenosee countered any effect of the looming West Texas crude, as sales and building of new homes around Kenosee remained strong.

Another encouraging observation is that financial institutions seem to be willing to work with individuals and families that may have suffered job losses or slow downs in work. We are seeing firsthand the resilience of individuals as they come forward with ideas to kick off entrepreneurial undertakings and look for property that may match their needs and budget. We’re seeing to some degree some of the Albertan Saskatchewanites making inquiries about coming back home.

People in and out of this area recognize that this is a great place to work, live and play and therefore, as has been seen in previous downturns, is that values tend to level out and resume as economic activity rises again.”

Moose Mountain Wild Boar study emphasizes need to eradicate Lynne Bell (With files from Kelly Running) One year into a study of feral wild board in southeast Saskatchewan, University of Saskatchewan graduate student Ryan Powers says, “A recent survey of R.M.s (rural municipalities) in Saskatchewan suggests that feral wild boar are widespread and very in abundance throughout the province.”

Powers and research assistant Shelby Adams began work on the project in the fall of 2014. The study is led by Dr. Ryan Brook of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, who has been an advocate for gaining a better understanding of the feral wild boar problem for a number of years. The Moose Mountain Wild Boar Eradication Committee (MMWBEC) has been actively working to eradicate feral wild boar for over 15 years, when it became apparent that the introduction of wild boar to this area aided destruction rather than diversification.

“The Moose Mountain Wild Boar Eradication Committee has provided us with invaluable knowledge and assistance from their members,” says Powers.

Wild boar were first introduced to Saskatchewan in the 1990s. They were intended to aid agricultural diversification, but even as a very few animals escaped, their rapid rates of reproduction, their

easy adaptation to varied environments and their destructive capabilities meant trouble for local farmers and ranchers as well as native wildlife and area ecosystems.

Local rancher and MMWBEC member, Bob Brickley of Kennedy told The Observer in 2015: “The situation started about 14 years ago when the first wild boar were introduced into this area.

The boars would do crop damage and terrorize domestic livestock, so local producers started to deal with it independently, like most of the problems they have, but it became evident an organized effort to eradicate them was necessary.”

“Our biggest challenge has been our animals,” added Brickley.

“We had a quarter section of swaths for grazing... wild boar foraged the crop and they’re not like elk, deer, or moose; they root it up and work across the field unless you do something about it. There’s no salvaging it; the cattle won’t graze there because of the urine and manure.

Everything avoids them.”

“It was apparent there was no agricultural damage, but the wild boars were cleaning nests out of birds, ducks, and song birds too, so it’s something that needs to be taken seriously.”

“In the years I’ve been doing this, there’s about eight to 12 people who have spent thousands of personal hours and there were times we were quite

confident there were no more in the back country of the park,” continued Brickley. “Two percent escape annually on average, though, so as long as there are commercial operations, there’s going to be escapees and if we don’t do something to stop them, we will see millions or billions of dollars’ worth of loss due to wild boar, like the southern United States.”

Powers agrees “Wild boar adapt to a wide range of habitats. They’re opportunistic omnivores that eat almost anything and everything they find and they’re prolific breeders.”

“The damage they cause is tremendous-the damage to agriculture, property and the environment is hard to quantify,” says Powers. “But in Texas alone, feral swine cause an estimated $59 million in damage annually.”

Powers says wild boar can also pose potential health risks. “In the U.S., feral swine are capable of carrying at least 30 different viruses and bacteria as well as 37 species of parasites.”

Powers says that knowledge gathered in this study can provide a better understanding of feral wild boar ecology and aid various stakeholders when developing management plans for instance.

In the U.S., methods to control feral swine are continually being researched and developed to aid in the reduction and elimination of populations.

Those attending the meeting shared a sense of urgency to be proactive about ridding the province of wild boar.

“We have learned the hard way,” says Brickley.

“We need to have credibility and we need to have research projects like this as no one can do it themselves. We need a combined effort to ensure wild boar are eradicated and that population numbers

do not increase.”

“We’ve been battling this for 16 years and if we don’t take it seriously, it will get worse and our grandchildren’s grandchildren will be dealing with it.”

“People in urban areas don’t recognize what it can potentially to do to their recreational opportunities-golf courses are just one example,” says Brickley.

“We need to make the decision-makers aware of the seriousness of this problem and we need to get the word out to the average person. That’s part of our current challenge.”

NOTE: It is illegal to hunt wild boar in the back country of Moose Mountain Provincial Park. Any sightings should be reported to the park office or the MMWBEC.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst Head for the Hills Veterinary Health Services Carlyle, Redvers & Kipling, Saskatchewan With many producers about to embark on another calving/lambing season, it is good to review the stages of calving/lambing. Gestation length varies between 279-289 days in cattle and 144-155 days in sheep.

There are three stages: 1. Cervical Dilation (softening of ligaments, udder development, nesting behavior, mucous plug expelled, but no abdominal pushing) –about six hours 2. Fetal expulsion (water bag appears, abdominal pushing)-about 2 hours long - Give 1.5 hours of “pushing” for part of calf or lamb to appear - Give another 30-45 minutes after part of the calf or lamb is showing for it to be born 3. Placental expulsion (usually “clean” within 2-6 hours, longer than 12 hours is considered a retained placenta) If any one of the stages takes longer than anticipated, it may be a sign that the animal is in distress and needs assistance.

Although the above times are a guideline to a normal calving or lambing, sometimes difficulties arise. A dystocia is a difficult or problematic birth. A producer can expect about 10-15% dystocias in heifers and 3-5% in cows. Rates of dystocias can be influenced by choosing easy calving bulls, culling cows with a previous history of

problems, proper nutrition, breeding cows at an appropriate weight and age. Breed, age, nutrition, body condition score, pelvic area, genetics, sex of calf/lamb, size of dam and calf can all play a role in whether things go smoothly or not. If a calf/lamb is in a forward presentation, that is much easier than a backwards or breech (bum first) presentation. An upside down position or an abnormal posture (i.e. leg or head back) are also examples when someone needs to intervene.

Variations from the normal: Ring womb- This is when the cow’s/ewe’s cervix only partially opens despite having adequate time to dilate. Ring womb prevents the calf/ lamb from being able to pass through the birth canal. Often a C-section is required.

Uterine torsion- This is when the uterus flips over thus blocking the birth canal. When the producer puts his arm in to check the cow, the arm tends to twist or rotate in a corkscrew fashion, indicating a problem. Occasionally the veterinarian will try to detorse the uterus with a detorsion bar or do a c-section.

Twins/Triplets- This is when multiple babies are born at one time.

Backwards- A cow can calf a backwards calf on her own; however, her birth canal needs to be larger to accommodate a backwards birth. Sometimes these end up needing a C-section.

born “bum first” (no legs are visible). Breech births require intervention. The veterinarian will try to bring the back legs up and into the birth canal if there is room. Occasionally the breach calf is too big to be repositioned, or having been repositioned, it is discovered the birth canal is too small to accomodate that calf. In those cases, a c-section may be the next option.

Uterine prolapse- Otherwise known as “throwing her calf bed”, this is a veterinary emergency.

This is when a cow continues to push after the calf is born, and she pushes her uterus completely out. The cow must be restrained and the veterinarian called immediately, as this can lead to the cow bleeding to death. If the cow survives this, she can go on to have many more calves and rarely repeats the uterine prolapse.

A difficult pull, a lack of calcium, magnesium, protein, or giving birth on a slope can predispose the cow to a uterine prolapse. Getting the cow up as soon as possible following calving will help prevent this. Your veterinarian may be able to recommend medications and mineral protocols to help prevent this as well.

Hypoxic calves-These are babies that lack oxygen because of a stressful or too slow birth. Often

they have a yellow discoloration. This is due to the meconium or first feces being passed by the calf, while in the uterus.

Yellow discoloration indicates an emergency and the calf will need to be born soon or it will not survive. Once a hypoxic calf is born, a bit more attention to making sure it gets colostrum (mother’s first milk) and learns how to feed properly will help increase survival rates.

The best way to get through calving/lambing season is to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Muddy lots, crowding, and chilling can increase numbers of

sick and severity of disease significantly. A safe place to put a cow needing assistance (i.e. a calving pen with a head gate and sides that swing around) will keep the handler safe as well as prevent the cow from injuring themselves or the unborn calf.

(Calving pens should be cleaned and disinfected between calvings.) Having a plan for transportation, in case an emergency trip to the veterinary clinic arises can cut back on the stress of having to line up a trailer or get roads plowed in the face of an emergency.

for calving/lambing: • chains and handles bander • colostrum • veterinary phone number • disinfectant • calf box with heat lamp • halter • electrolytes • tags and tagger • Vitamin E/Selenium • dehorn paste • bag feeder • calf puller • other supplies as suggested by your veterinarian • pail • sleeves and gloves • coveralls • bottle with nipple

Moose Mountain Ag Day to be held March 1

By Kelly Running Moose Mountain Ag Day has been a staple in the community each spring.

This year marks the 16th year of the event, which will be held on Tuesday, March 1, at Prairie Place Hall in Arcola, SK. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with registration done at the door for $25 each – which includes lunch – and the agricultural trade show opening. The coffee will be on, so ranchers and farmers can grab a cup before settling into the presentations which will

begin with a welcome at 9:30 a.m. and the first presentation beginning at 9:50 a.m.

The first presenter will be Allan Mitchell, General Manager and Agronomist with AgraTactics Agronomy. Mitchell will present on “Most Common Overlooked Agronomic Practices for Grain Production.” Mitchell is a second generation agronomist who has been working in the industry for over 30 years. Specifically Mitchell has developed an expertise over the years in

Jay Fuhrer with Natural Resource Conservation Service will follow at 11 a.m. after a short break.

David Pattyson, Watershed Co-ordinator with the Upper Souris Watershed Association, will begin a short presentation at 1 p.m. focused on the benefits of wetland restoration and the value of wetlands in Saskatchewan.

He will be followed by Ken Evans, Farm Management Specialist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture. Evans will present on “Transitioning

the Farm to the Next Generation,” which is a topic that many have recently been interested in as ranchers and farmers think about retiring and how to best pass on their legacy.

Fuhrer will then present, “Are those Cows on your Cropland?” which will address integrating livestock and annual cropping together to improve soil health. This presentation will delve into ways of monitoring results of soil biology and soil carbon.

A short break will allow individuals to check

out the attending ag trade show booths before the concluding presentation is given at 3:30 p.m. by Craig Klemmer, a professional agrologist and senior economist with Farm Credit Canada. Klemmer will speak on “Global Trends and the Effects on Agriculture.”

Processing Forages

By Naomi Paley, PAg Regional Livestock Specialist, Yorkton Office Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Processing forages with bale shredders and tub grinders helps to reduce feed wastage especially when dealing with lower quality forages.

Cattle are selective eaters. They will pick through the hay, leaving the coarse stemmy material behind. Ground or chopped forage is consumed with minimal losses if fed is in a feed bunk or self-feeder. Feeding for-

age on the snow increases the amount of waste. New research has shown when forages are rolled out onto snow, there is 12.3 per cent waste and 19.2 per cent waste when shredded onto the ground. If fed on snow, the fine material shorter than ¾ inch or 1.7cm cannot be picked out of the snow and creates 75 per cent of the wasted feed.

Generally this is the fine leaf material that is high in nutrients, especially energy and protein.

Processing forages and roughages allows for mix-

ing. Good quality hay can be mixed with poor quality forages (slough hay, cereal straw and weathered hay) to provide a more balanced diet.

Over- and under-feeding can be avoided. Grain and supplements can be added to the mix.

Processing reduces the ration bulk. Grinding forage through a 1.0 cm or 1.3 cm screen can increase the rate of passage through the digestive tract. Daily feed intake and rates of gain are increased. Chopping forage longer than 2.5 cm

does not result in increased intake or rate of passage through the digestive tract.

Grinding through a 0.5 cm screen (or finer) reduces the digestibility of the forage.

Finely ground forage passes through the digestive system more rapidly, resulting in incomplete absorption of the digested feed. Processing a poorer quality forage increases intake to a greater degree than grinding high quality forage. The use of a 1.7 cm screen has the highest increase in digestibility for low quality forages.

Twine is not generally

considered a problem in feeding as long as it is cut into fairly short pieces (16 to 18 inches). Net wrap should be removed prior to processing. There have been cases of dead cows from impaction due to larger pieces of net wrap clumping and blocking the digestive tract.

The occurrence of bloat may be increased when grinding good quality forages. Ground forage can be dusty. The incidence of respiratory problems and eye disorders may increase especially if the cattle are

fed using bale feeders.

Poisonous plants can pose problems. Cattle normally pick through long hay, leaving behind unpalatable material including poisonous plants.

Processed forage is consumed without sorting. Ensure that the forage is free of poisonous plants.

Grinding forages can be expensive. Determine the advantages and disadvantages of processing. If only poor quality or coarse stemmy roughage is available for your cow herd, grinding may be a useful option.

This winter has been a blessing for many, but most of all for cattle farmers. The mild season has helped keep the farmers warm while doing chores, but a local cattle producer explained just how important this El Nino winter has been, “This winter has been a real treat for anyone in the livestock industry.

Our feed stores have not been depleted as they have been in other colder years, as the cattle didn’t require as much energy to get through our winter. Also, bedding supplies have not been used anywhere near what we have seen in the past as we have had very little snow, and wind chill factors have been considerably less than the typical winters and enormously in

year a little longer to get herself back in calf.”

For a successful calving season, there are a few things that have to be put in place prior to starting up. Every farmer might have a different system, but this local farmer had these steps to get ready for calving, “We bring the first calf heifers up close to the calving barn where we can watch them very closely, and we bring the rest of the herd out of their wintering pasture up into the calving paddocks. We also make sure all maternity pens are ready and all calving equipment, pullers, chains, calf warmer, etc. are ready to go in hopes that we don’t have to use them.”

Although calving is a big time-consumer on the

farmer’s agenda this time of year, there are other things that the producer is spending time doing.

“This is typically bullbuying season. Local seed stock producers are having their annual bull sales in all their communities and farms, to prepare for the upcoming breeding season. We evaluate our breeding stock to see what needs to be replaced or added to. We then either, attended bull sales to purchase our herd sires, or go to local ranches and do it by private treaty.”

He continued, “Hopefully, the bulls that we used last year will give us trouble-free calving, and we also hope that we have a drier spring to keep calf health problems to a minimum.”

Yes, this cow of substance was a favourite and she loved attention.

Although she had never been a show girl, Cindy loved attention – you know, a scratch on the back, up there where even her long tongue could not quite reach.

Good traits run in families. Cindy’s dam, ‘1H’ was a good cow too and a bit of a character. 1H always used to sit on her haunches, just like a dog.

Cindy took to sitting as well. Pretty cute – this extra-tame cow sitting, surveying how the chores were progressing, all the while chewing her cud.

Well, Cindy nearly got us in trouble with the neighbours one day. Unbeknownst to us, a few hours after she freshened, Cindy came down with milk fever. This is a calcium deficiency that develops, more typically in dairy cattle when their calcium goes directly to milk produc-

tion, not leaving enough calcium in circulation to run the machinery of the cow’s body. Milk fever manifests as weakness, an inability to rise to their feet to feed their new calf.

However, we never suspected our fat old cow (sorry Cindy) had milk fever. Her stocky new calf needed a drink. Why wasn’t mamma cow up tending to that? After a gentle slap which Cindy seemed to ignore, with a hefty boot to her butt, my husband bellowed, “Get up Cindy, you lazy ... cow” (or some such expletive).

Now, at that time, the neighbour’s wife was also ‘Cindy’. It was a clear day.

Sound was carrying pretty good over the half-mile down the hill. Let’s put it this way - each knew how the other guy’s choring was going.

We looked at each other – my husband and I – grinning, thinking of Cindy, on her farm just down the hill and hoping, We were not commenting on our neighbour’s sleeping habits!

There were no repercussions from this incident – thankfully. Good neighbours make good neighbours.

Beekeeping more than a hobby

Davis said when Holland explained beekeeping in more detail, he was instantly intrigued by the idea. “I started researching on my own and decided I had to try it myself. My personality often draws me to ideas not usually considered ‘mainstream’, and beekeeping certainly intrigued me in this way,� said Davis.

In May, Davis purchased his first hives at an auction and the fun began. “I was instantly in over my head! Regardless of the research and countless You Tube videos I watched I was completely naive to the task before me and yet it has been a tremendous amount of fun,� he added.

Chemical free land Davis was born and raised on his grandparents’, Albert and Jenny Andries’, farm east of Deloraine. Twenty years ago, the management of the land was entrusted to his parents Llana and Gary Davis. “At this juncture the land was seeded to permanent cover including native grass. Through holistic land management practices carried out by our family, the land has increased significantly in biomass production and diversity of plant species and wildlife. In addition, for nearly two decades, the land has not been intentionally exposed to agricultural chemical of any kind. It’s my belief the bees will not only benefit from reduced pesticide exposure but also the abundance and variety of blooming, nectar producing plants,� said Davis.

This is Davis’s personal business endeavour but he says it will continue to be a family business. “I did not do my due diligence and from the

moment I purchased the hives I was in over my head. I was not fully aware of the investment of time required,� he added.

Davis had many more questions than answers.

How was I going to extract the honey they produced?

When would the honey be ready for extraction? “In fact, I didn’t even know what a queen bee looked like. All things that are at the very least essential in a successful apiary,� he said.

Davis says he wouldn’t have had any bees left after the first two weeks if it wasn’t for a great deal of help from his family, Lloyd Holland, and Tyler Scheirlinck and other very gracious local honey producers who were very giving of their time and expertise.

At first, Davis thought of beekeeping more with regards to the act of keeping bees than the potential for some income. However, once he harvested some honey and beeswax the entrepreneurial element of the venture began.

Continued from page 12 “The bees have supplied us with a product that we are very proud of and we are very excited to develop products from the honey and wax they have created,” said Davis.

The name of a product is a significant decision of the marketing process. Davis said it was important to him to have the company name pay homage to the land he grew up on and where the venture is based.

“At the north end of our land lays the remnants of the old Naples Elevator siding #29. The elevator was built early in the last century and only survived a few years before burning to the ground. |I felt it fitting to have the name of the siding remembered in this way,” commented Davis.

There seems to be a lucra-

tive and vast market for honey products.

“Naples Clover Honey” offers both liquid and “creamed” honey. These products are being sold locally as well as on both the east and west coast in Canada, and as far away as Japan!

Davis is reflective of his venture.

“I had never fully comprehended just how incredible honeybees are. I think all too often in nature we only see things at face value. I obviously knew honey bees existed, and I knew they made honey, and honey tastes good, you buy it at the store and it goes good with peanut butter. Beyond that my knowledge of bees was nil. When I learned more about the bees I became incredibly fascinated with the immense complexity

of the hive, the roles different bees play, the way they communicate and the feats they can accomplish. They are truly a remarkable creature and I have developed a profound appreciation for the role they play in our environment,” Davis added.

Davis sees the bees as a farm based venture which not only is a potential revenue stream but a livestock which is a perfect fit for their farm operation.

“Not only is the farm good for our bees but the bees are good for our farm. While the value of the venture can easily be measured financially the real value of the bees and their interaction with the land is much more difficult to measure but may well exceed the value of the honey they produce,” he concluded.

Deloraine Curling Club hosting the last “Last Hurrah”

By Judy Wells For the past several years, Deloraine Curling Club has wrapped up the curling season with a fun, family-oriented bonspiel, known as “The Last Hurrah”.

This year will mark the final “Last Hurrah” as the current facility is on its last legs. Inspectors reported the basement should no longer be used and the ice area is in very bad shape.

That portion of the rink was constructed in 1948 and it is separating from the foundation as much as six inches on the west side. In the mid-70s, when artificial ice was installed, the brine pipes used were on metal cradles, which are now rusting. There are six loops no longer in use. Club members attempted to fix these but they are virtually irreparable.

Consequently, the Curling Club approached Deloraine-Winchester Council with a proposal.

Shortly after Council was doing a prebudget inspection of the Deloraine-Winchester Community Hall when it was discovered there were structural failures.

A public meeting was held on November 16 regarding the complex proposal.

There was literally standing room only for this important meeting. Gord Weidenhamer, Reeve for the Municipality of DeloraineWinchester, explained that two committees had been established including a Complex/Building Committee and a Fundraising Committee. Even though the project isn’t official, there’s a lot of groundwork and preparation necessary if/when the Complex becomes a reality.

Blair Goethals spoke on behalf of the Curling Club saying, “We have 100 plus members and have enjoyed the best financial years in the past few years. For 124 years the Club has operated on it’s own besides help with the taxes and insurance from the Town/RM in the past few years. Our operating costs are $65,000 a year. We feel strongly we could utilize a complex much better than two separate buildings. This would also give us a combined force to pursue sponsor-

ship. The Curling Club has committed to $20,000/year for 20 years to pay their share of the operating costs and share in construction.”

Reeve Weidenhamer spoke about the proposed complex plans (tentative plans only).

The hall portion would seat a minimum of 300, curling rink would have three sheets of ice, shared facilities including washrooms, change room and kitchen. Feedback from this meeting was over 90% in favour of a Hall/Curling Rink Complex.

In early December 2015, Council announced a news release that they had passed a resolution to instruct administration to proceed with preparation of a Local Improvement Plan for a Community Hall/Curling Rink Complex. The decision to proceed with a proposed combined complex had been made official.

Reeve Weidenhamer said, “The decision to proceed with this complex is an effort to meet the needs of the community as efficiently and effectively as possible.”

Councillor Carmel Olson, chair of the Fundraising Committee, said, “There is no question that we need both a hall and a curling rink - for current and future

generations.”

In addition to the traditional usage, the complex will provide a place to host events and accommodate

meeting space. Both venues will help keep Deloraine a great place to live and raise families. A combined effort will reduce both the finan-

cial and volunteer burden.

At this time Council is awaiting the draft of construction specifications from the engineer for both

a wood frame as well as a pre-fabricated metal design. Once these have been received, they will proceed with tendering the project.

According to CNS Canada, the longer it takes for the El Nino weather to dissipate and for La Nina to take over control, the drier

that there is the chance that La Nina won’t arrive until late 2016 or 2017.

Although La Nina isn’t the only thing that is going to affect how much moisture the prairie provinces can expect this spring.

Another factor that meteorologists consider is the cool water from the Pacific

Ocean when La Nina arrives, which will be felt if La Nina arrives by June.

There is still the big question with when La Nina will come, and that will determine the fate of the prairies and their moisture this spring.

There is no definite answer with when La Nina

will be joining us, but regardless of the answer, there is going to be difficulties for some farmers.

If there is excess moisture, the land that remained waterlogged last year is going to be feeling the effects, and if there is low moisture, dry land will again be back in a drought situation.

3. Roses.

What do you think sweetheart roses are?

It seems the name was originally applied specifically to polyanthus roses, the class that bloom prolifically in sprays and was first introduced in France in the late 19th century; ‘The Fairy’ is a very popular polyanthus in gardens today. Contemporary florists, though, seem to call any rose “sweetheart” for Valentine’s Day. 4. Violets.

Roses are red and violets are blue, eh? Many gardeners who’ve planted Viola odorata, the sweet violets referred to in the verse, have sworn a blue streak trying to eradicate this invasive exotic from their borders and lawns. Forgive the wretched poet who associated violets with love; he needed something blue to rhyme with “you”, and corydalis just didn’t fit.

5. Sweet Pea. The ornamental sweet pea, Lathyrus odoratus, is sweet of smell but must

not be eaten by humans or livestock: it is toxic. Ingestion of enough sweet pea material will lead to a disease known as odoratism, characterized by paralysis of the legs. Although the symptoms sound a little like love sickness, I don’t think that’s what inspires the young romantic to call his darling “Sweet Pea”.

6. Heartsease.

This is an old-fashioned but romantic name for the little species pansy botanically known as Viola tricolor. Today, the cultivars are often called Johnny Jump-ups.

In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oberon uses the juice of heartsease (which he calls love-inidleness) as the love potion that starts that the whole merry mix-up of love triangles.

7. Love lies bleeding.

You cannot have romantic love without suffering, and the traditional name of Amaranth caudatus fills the bill. Popular in Victorian gardens, the plant is

making a comeback owing to its strange and arresting form. In addition to being an interesting ornamental, it is a pseudocereal - a plant that produces food grain but is not a grass. It may become a very important food plant in the future because it is drought tolerant and is 30 per cent higher in protein than rice, wheat, oats and rye.

8. Passionflower. (Passiflora.)

Before you get all excited, you need to know that “passion” refers to the passion of Christ, not, well, not the passion of Valentine’s Day. These exotic sub-tropical plants, which you can grow as a balcony plant (though you’re unlikely to ever see fruit), were the subject of analysis by 16th-century Spanish missionaries. They de-

termined that the flower’s 10 petals and sepals represent the 10 apostles, the tendrils that help the vine to climb represent whips used in the flagellation, the three stigmata represent the three nails used in the crucifixion and the five anthers represent the five wounds. So, if you want to send someone a lascivious message by sending a passionflower, make sure the recipient isn’t a historical botanist!

9. Forget-Me-Not. (Myosotis.)

These darling blue posies of spring are considered invasive by some - probably folks who’ve never done battle with goutweed or a more determined foe.

Forget-Me-Nots pop up early in the season then disappear without stealing any thunder or space from

other ornamentals, but should you want to eradicate them it isn’t too hard.

As annuals, you just have to make sure you get them out before they set seeds.

The seeds are contained in little capsules along the stems, which will hitch a ride on your shoes or pant cuffs as you pass in hopes of setting out to see the world.

10. Bachelor’s Button.

(Centaurea cyanus.)

Some people call these cornflowers because they had a tendency to infiltrate crops in their native Europe in the age before pesticides. In Victorian floral codes, a bachelor’s button indicated celibacy, perhaps stemming from the German blaue blume of Romanticism where the blue flower is a core symbol of yearning.

This freely self-sowing, cheery annual takes its romantic name from the airy, lacy bracts that surround the flower. It is also sometimes called devil in a bush. Do you suppose it was renamed by someone after sober second thought?

Solution to local flooding is under our feet

By Ryan Canart Manager of Upper Assiniboine River Conservation District There has been a lot of talk about water management in the news as of late but we can’t talk about water without thinking about soil. Did you know that how much water the soil can hold is directly related to the amount of organic matter in that soil?

It is an alarming amount of water - somewhere in the range of 20,000 gallons per acre for every one percent of soil organic matter, depending on the soil type (sandy versus heavy clay).

People looking for a quick

fix or simple solution to the recent flooding issues are out of luck. The vast majority of us have been reducing the soil’s water holding capacity for close to 100 years now, and draining potholes for close to 50.

Today, with a warming climate, the weather patterns are becoming more variable and extreme. You marry these two facts and you get more washed out roads, more flooded farmland, yard sites and even towns. The good news is, there is no limit to human ingenuity if we decide to tackle the problem. Better yet, the hard work has been done already; we just have to

follow the path. The pot of gold at the end of this path is, improved environmental performance, healthier food and the reduced need for expensive agronomic inputs.

The United Nations proclaimed 2015 as the International year of soils, in an effort to bring awareness to the general public about the importance of soil. The topsoil is the foundation of all humanity, but what does the average person really know about the soil? Not enough!

Soil health is a relatively new buzz-word being thrown

around and the topic is huge and complex. In a nut shell, healthy soil equals healthy plants equals healthy people.

Healthy soils have diverse plant communities that feed diverse soil organism communities. To reap the benefits of healthy soils, they need to be managed in such a way that the soil bugs (bacteria, fungi, right up to earth worms) are allowed to thrive and grow in numbers from year to year.

Soil tillage is not good for soil life and the use of chemicals and fertilizers outright kills many soil organisms. Simply

diversifying crop rotations is a start in the right direction, using a diverse mix of cover crops species from time to time is better yet.

On the internet you will find countless articles, videos and information on this topic.

Take some time and read about soil and the concepts of soil health. Get informed and educated on soil’s ability to produce healthy food.

Increasing our soil’s moisture carrying capacity and reducing flooding goes hand in glove with protecting life in our soils.

This, in turn, is a positive step in sequestering carbon (green house gas reduction), right in the very soils that need that organic material. It’s a contribution to our world that agriculturalists can make.

We have a pioneer in soil health who is making this work on a large scale. I am hoping to him come to the Upper Assiniboine River Conservation District’s 20th annual supper in Elkhorn this spring, to explain how and what we can all do to improve our soil and profit from it.
