Shane and Ashley Valentine have opened a new venue for family fun this fall- and have already welcomed over 500 visitors on their opening weekend, September 17 and 18. The Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch is located two miles northeast of Carlyle’s Prairie Dog Drive-In and in addition to picking out the

perfect pumpkin, kids of all ages can explore the corn maze, play in a giant sandbox, tackle the zipline, pose for a family photo, enjoy a homemade lunch or treat, and more.

“We �irst thought of it a few years ago,” says Shane. “We thought it would be a great idea to do a pumpkin patch at our place. We opened on Saturday, Sept. 17 and we had 300 visitors on our �irst day.

“We appreciate their support and we’re happy they like what we’ve done so far.”

Shane was largely self-taught when it came to planting pumpkins. “Last year, I started 1,000 pumpkins. Then later, they got hailed out. They grew to be small, so we gave them all the the playschool.”

“I broke the pasture this year, cultivated, disced it, bought a corn planter for the corn for the corn maze and planted all of the pumpkins by hand,” he says.

“So I planted 4,800 pumpkin seeds per acre. It took about 16 hours.”

“We have 10 different kinds of pumpkins this year,” adds Shane. “They take anywhere from 90 to 120 days to grow. We’re finding out which ones we’ll plant again and which ones we won’t bother with. I talked to buddies who are farmers and

through the winter, I read a whole bunch about pumpkins.”

“I taught myself and I’m still learning. I’ve never even planted a garden before this,” he laughs.

As part of the pumpkin planting process, Shane learned how to pollinate the plants by hand, which he did “every morning, from midJuly on.”

“We’ve got pumpkins that are made for making pies,” says Shane.

Waking up your language: Nakota speakers spreading their knowledge Kelly Running CARLYLE OBSERVER observer@sasktel.net

The Nakota language is slowly being lost, but two local native speakers of the language – Armand McArthur of Pheasant Rump and Peter Bigstone of Ocean Man – are hoping to spread the knowledge passed down to them by their relatives to a new generation of Nakota speakers.

Traditionally the Nakota language was gender specific, meaning male and female counterparts would ask questions differently or refer to something in different terms; today, the language is more forgiving according to McArthur and Bigstone as they say a male maybe only learned the language from their grandmother or a female may have learned the language from their grandfather. For them the most important aspect of the efforts they are putting into teaching the language to a new generation is that the

new generation open themselves to learning it in any form.

“The language is part of the Law of the Land given to us from the Creator, God,” McArthur stated. “It’s very important for us to know our language as a people.

Language is a big part of our culture and traditions.”

“The Law of the Land is supreme: We must be at peace with ourselves, we must find peace with our family, we have peace with all plant nations, and peace with all animal nations. We all come from one, so plants and animals are our relatives as well.

It’s a very inclusive language.”

“We need to go back to the Law of the Land as it pertains to First Nations,” McArthur continued. “The law today is a foreign law to us, it applies to us, but even today many of us don’t know how to cope with it. We don’t have that understanding.

And the Law of the Land is protected by the Royal Proclamation of 1763

and the Treaties that followed.”

Language is a large part of culture and tradition for any peoples, but following Residential Schools and the attempted assimilation of First Nations people to the “Canadian identity” that the government was perpetuating at the time many First Nations’ languages and cultural practices were lost. There are now movements focused on recovering and teaching these lost languages and cultural practices.

“My grandfather taught me the language and I was able to retain it through the Residential Schools,” Bigstone explained.

The Nakota language itself was not a written language and knowledgeable individuals who have continued to speak it are the source for it today. Linguists have developed an alphabet based on the English alphabet to be used while learning the language, while a Nakota dictionary has also been developed.

“It’s good to have those resources, but it’s important to learn where you can hear it as well. There are subtleties between words that look similar when written, but are pronounced differently and mean very different things,” McArthur explained.

Bigstone added, “It’s important to get our culture back. Sometimes it feels like we’re fighting a losing battle because the younger generation doesn’t always want to put the time in to learn it. But, it’s worth it if even just one will continue it on.”

Bigstone continued, “European languages and languages of immigrants now coming here are all protected, but Nakota and other First Nations languages are disappearing.”

Peter McArthur, who helped organize the three-day course held in Kisbey last week, agreed: “We need to bring people together and to develop a respect for each other. There needs to be reconciliation and the only way to

do that is for everyone to be involved.”

The language is relatively easy to comprehend. Each word comes from a root word, which with a little thought and knowledge of the language makes sense when explained. For example, the word for snow is “wa,” while the word for hail is “wasu.”

“Wa” meaning snow and “su” meaning stone, thus hail is known as “snow stone” when directly translated to English.

The language can also adapt and new words be developed by simply following the natural way the words come together in describing the item.

One of the participants in the three-day language course, Joan McArthur of Pheasant Rump, agrees that language is extremely important and must be retained and taught to younger generations: “Bringing the language back is important – for any culture language is important, when you look at the French, Ger-

man, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, anyone, they’re strongly built cultures who have a strong connection to their language.

Language grounds you, so working together to understand language and cultural ways builds that strength.”

She continued, “Language allows us to be grounded, to have our values, our cultural and traditional ways, it connects us to what we did in our pasts. If our language is lost then we don’t know where we come from and we as a people will be lost. Language is our roots, it connects us to our past relatives. Whenever I hear Nakota, here in the classroom or elsewhere, I can hear my dad speaking it. It’s very comforting, but it’s very emotional as well.”

Bigstone and Armand McArthur hope to develop a language course for the winter and are hoping to work towards immersive classes where students are surrounded by the language.

Story Producer, Amelia Wasserman, of the CBC hit Still Standing, was in Reston September 26 to 29 choosing a live stand-up location and interviewing locals for the upcoming episode of Still Standing that will be filmed in Reston Sunday, October 30. Still Standing is produced out of Toronto by Frantic Television. “The comedy show is free and we encourage everyone to come and see it,� stated Maureen Riley, Executive Producer/Supervising Producer. “It is a tailor made show about Reston for Reston.

The other towns that we have been to loved the experience saying that they laughed and learned a little more about their town too.�

Jonny Harris headlines and three Canadian comedians, Fraser Young, Steve Dylan, and Graham Chitteden, will warm up the crowd before Jonny hits the stage.

Other nearby towns that have been featured include: Manitou, MB (Season 1); Willow Bunch, SK (Season 1); Maple Creek, SK (Season 2); Pilot Mound, MB (Season 2); and, as well

as Reston, Gilbert Plains, MB and Manitou Beach, SK for Season 3.

Today, Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart proclaimed October 2 to 8, 2016, as Animal Health Week in Saskatchewan. This year’s national theme, “One Health,� stresses the important connection between animal health, human health and environmental health. “The theme of this year’s Animal Health Week reinforces the important role Saskatchewan’s producers play in protecting the health of animals, humans and the environment,� Stewart said. “When raising livestock, producers consciously balance each of these areas through practices such as on-farm biosecurity measures and the prudent use of antibiotics and vaccines.�

Most of us think of life insurance as a way to protect our family financially when we die. But insurance coverage can go beyond that basic need, to increase the value of an estate. Of course, an insurance policy’s primary purpose should be to ensure that your loved ones won’t find themselves in difficulty. But consider using life insurance to leave more to your heirs, other beneficiaries or even charity. You can do this through a permanent life insurance policy, such as universal life or participating

whole life, which provides both insurance and an investment component. The insurance portion will take care of basic insurance requirements, while the investment portion can be used to boost the value of your estate. For example, when you take out a universal life policy, a portion of the premiums you pay go toward insurance, with the rest going into the policy’s investment component (sometimes known as the cash or savings portion). The money in the investment component is sheltered from tax, resulting in faster growth than if money is invested outside the policy. When you die, your heirs receive the face value of the policy’s life insurance, as well as the value of the investment portion of the policy. Both are tax-free to beneficiaries, so they receive the entire amount of the policy and its investments.

With universal life, you have some control over

the investment portion because you can choose from a number of investment options offered by insurers.

Typical choices include investments whose returns are linked to the performance of brand name mutual funds, guaranteed interest accounts or stock market indexes.

The wealth that accumulates in the investment component will depend on the deposit paid and performance of underlying investments. How much you pay in premiums and how often is generally up to you. In most cases you can pay whatever you wish. However, there are governmentimposed maximums based on factors such as your age, gender, expected lifespan and the face value of the policy. This flexibility is what makes universal life such a valuable estate-planning tool.

You can start small, with the goal of providing financial protection for your family in the event of your death. As you grow

older and find yourself with more disposable income or cash flow, you can focus on the investment component of the policy. You’re a good candidate for universal life if you have money left over to invest after your basic financial, investment and insurance needs are met-including maximizing yearly Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contributions and paying down loans. This type of policy is suitable for not only for those seeking insurance flexibility and a way to enhance estate values, but those who need additional taxsheltered growth after making RRSP contributions.

Local talent participate in WMYC Shirley Russell WMYC Publicity Submitted

The Western Manitoba Youth Choir is preparing to tour the Westman region in October after having had two intensive weekend rehearsals at Riding Mountain Conference Centre at Clear Lake in September. The 54 voice choir is drawn from 15 Westman communities. The following represent the Melita are: Jessica Goethals and Kelly Temple from Deloraine, Latisha Louttit of Melita, Josie Meggison and George Meggison of Goodlands, Julia Phillips of Lauder and Ethan Radcliffe of Waskada.

Conductors are Sarah Hall and Rob Monson and the accompanist is Luis Ramirez. Sarah Hall holds a Master’s Degree in Vocal Pedagogy and Musicology from the New England Conservatory of Music (Boston) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Voice Performance from West Chester University of Pennsylvania.

As an Adjunct Professor of Music at Brandon University, Sarah teaches voice, diction and vocal chamber music. In addi-

tion to her work at the University, she appears regularly as an adjudicator and clinician for voice, speech arts and choir.

Rob Monson currently teaches instrumental and choral music at Glenlawn Collegiate in Winnipeg. Over the past 20 years he has had the privilege to sing and direct with many choirs and bands throughout Manitoba. As a tuba player, Rob has performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg Wind Ensemble and the Winnipeg Brass Quintet. Rob has adjudicated at the Solo and Ensemble Festival and at the Level One Band Festival for the Manitoba Band Association.

He has also conducted workshops for Central, Eastern and Western Manitoba Choral Associations. He directed the Provincial Honour Choir in 2008 and the Manitoba Junior Honour Band in 2014.

Fall boating – a splendour to experience safely If one of your annual early fall rituals is to pull the boat and put it away for the winter, you’re missing out on a spectacular fall boating season. While swimming and watersports may lose their lustre as the water temperature cools, taking in the fall colours of the shoreline from the water is nothing short of breathtaking. Pristine anchorages, normally clogged during July and August with hundreds of boats, now offer quiet solitude. And, for anglers, the action is hot with fish actively feeding ahead of the long Winter freeze over. As you stretch the boating season, however, there are a few precautions that the Canadian Safe Boating Council and its partners would like you to take that will maximize your safety and enjoyment.

Before heading out, be sure to check the weather. The mixing of warm and cold air can quickly spawn high winds and

waves making it treacherous for small boats.

Fog, too, is an issue at this time of year making visibility difficult.

Should you find yourself in a fog bank, be sure to proceed slowly and sound your horn at regular intervals to alert other boaters of your presence.

Well into October, daytime temperatures can occasionally be balmy but resist the urge to bring your shorts and T-shirt back out of the closet. Dressing for the water temperature will help slow the onset of hypothermia should the unexpected happen and you find yourself in the water. Accidental cold water immersion can be shocking, but don’t panic. It may take a minute or so to get your breathing under control after the initial shock but you will have at least 10-15 minutes, even in very cold water, to affect selfrescue before you will start to lose muscle control in your arms and leg. This is where an ap-

proved lifejacket, either inflatable or inherently buoyant, is an essential part of your wardrobe to keep you afloat.

Be sure to leave a float plan with a responsible person on shore who will know what to do if you’re overdue.

A marine radio or cell phone will allow you to call for assistance should the need arise.

Having a few tools and spare parts aboard will also allow you to fix minor problems that might otherwise cause you to be stranded out on the water.

Ensure that your boat and engine are in good shape and mechanically sound. Ethanol-based fuel can allow water contamination in the tank. Use a fuel additive to prevent water in the fuel line from freezing that could cause your engine to chug to a halt.

If using portable fuel tanks, it’s a good idea to have a spare on board as a reserve.

Simplify the financial complexities of aging parents As parents begin to lose physica ability and metnal acuity, much of the responsibility of home maintenance, getting to and from doctor visits, grocery shopping and finances fall to their adult children.

Red Cross working to provide bullying prevention education to every Sask student Education is the key to preventing bullying, and the Canadian Red Cross is working to provide that education to every student in the province of Saskatchewan.

“If we’re going to change the culture around bullying, we need to reach all Saskatchewan students with our bullying prevention programming.

We are lucky to be in a province that not only understands why this goal is so important, but supports the Imagine No Bullying cause,” said Cindy Fuchs, Vice– President of the Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan.

Fundraising support for this initiative is directly tied to the 22nd annual Red Cross Campaign for Kids Raffle, with over $60,000 in cash prizes to be won by lucky Saskatchewan ticket holders.

“We wouldn’t be able to reach students across Saskatchewan with the tools they need to recognize and address bullying when it happens without this raffle,” said Monika Zmetana, provincial gaming coordinator for the Canadian Red Cross. “Since all the proceeds from this raffle stay in Saskatchewan, we’re able to channel them directly into this critical education.”

This year’s prizes include a grand prize of $25,000, a $5,000 early bird prize, $1,000 daily draws in January and a 50/50 draw. Last year the 50/50 winner took home over $30,000!

The Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program - end of field season update Jessica Riach Submitted

Summer is over and so concludes another year for our program. This year was quite successful with a total of 18 new owls in the world. Of these 18, 10 were transferred to the Assiniboine Park Zoo for the winter and will be released next season. The other eight were allowed to migrate with their parents.

Unfortunately, this season, we had several adult owls predated. The Burrowing Owl is a ground dweller which makes them very susceptible to predators both on the ground and in the air.

Through September and October, we will continue to periodically check on the owls, until they leave the release sites for migration. If any of them do not

leave by late fall, they will recaptured and transferred to Assiniboine Park Zoo. These owls will again be given the opportunity to nest and migrate next year.

When Burrowing Owls are 5-6 weeks old they are full-grown and can fly (fledgings). At this time they also become independent from their parents.

They are capable of hunting for themselves and will move to other burrows away from their nest burrow. They will continue to build their strength until they migrate in the fall.

Burrowing Owls travel a great distance during migration. They migrate from Manitoba through Central United States to the Gulf of Mexico. Along this trek, they encounter many challenges along the way including all the same challenges they encoun-

ter here. These include all sorts of anthropogenic changes to land which have resulted in habitat loss, increased predation, and lack of ample food. Burrowing Owls are good flyers and can complete their migration in only a few days.

Hopefully we will see some of our owls return next year. Unfortunately, Burrowing Owls don’t always come back to the same burrow or area every season. With this said, there is a greater chance for them returning if they have successfully nested.

The Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program will be back out next season releasing owl pairs, conducting surveys for wild owls, connecting with landowners to talk about maintaining land for Burrowing Owls, and participating at many local events
