Come and see what Souris is all about during Scarecrow Days 2017 Darci Semeschuk SOURIS PLAINDEALER spdealer@mts.net

With twenty-five Souris Scarecrow Days under their belt, the Souris and Glenwood Chamber of Commerce has pretty much seen it all. There have been many different themes including Traditional, Wild West, Duck Dynasty, Disco, Christmas, Disney, Redneck, and the list goes on. Nearly every popular theme has run the gamut of Souris Scarecrow Days and 2017 is no different. This year the theme is ‘Come As You Are.’ Confused? You’re not alone so this year’s chairperson of the event explains, Lon Turner explained what the committee means by this year’s theme. “Come As You Are means just that, create what you are. What people do in their lives or what they do in your business reflects a lot on the entire community,” stated Turner who serves as Souris Glenwood Community Development Officer. “It’s the people who weave the fabric of a community and we want to see who they are. It should be a lot of fun.” Fun is exactly what people will find during the 2017 Scarecrow days. The weekend, first started by former Sourisite Kim Leskiw, is all about winding down the season, celebrating the harvest, and heading into winter. Souris Mayor, Darryl Jackson has been present for every single one of the last twenty-five Scarecrow Days and is thrilled to see that the event still continues. “I was here for the first Scarecrow Days when Kim first brought forth the idea to the Chamber,” explained Jackson. “I was

The 26th annual Souris Scarecrow Days are set for September 22 – 24 and from the schedule of events, it’s going to be an excellent weekend. This year’s theme, “Come As You Are”, is designed to honour the people who make up the fabric of Souris either through their person lives or their business. Plan to stop in Souris for Scarecrow Days 2017. Photo|Plaindealer Files Chamber president then and we worked hard to find some money in the budget to fund it. It was a fun event then and although it has changed, it’s still a fun event today.” Mayor Jackson says one of the main things he’s noticed is the increased traffic that Scarecrow Days brings to town. “Anytime we have an event that brings people to our town, whether to shop, eat at one of our restaurants, check out the scarecrows, or just attend some yard sale, that’s a good thing for the town,” he stated. “We are glad to see it continue and look forward to many more weekends like this.” The streets of Souris are filled with visitors on Scarecrow Days weekend due largely in part to the Town Wide Yard Sales. Community members hold yard sales the Saturday of Scarecrow Days. It

is advertised far and wide and often it’s difficult to even find a place to park during yard sales. “We know a lot of people come to town to find a bargain at the sales and we hope they stay for some of the other events and lunch before they head out of town,” explained Turner. Building the perfect scarecrow is what it’s all about. People do come to Souris to see what the latest creations look like. It’s always a fun, family orientated thing to do, drive the streets and pick out your favourite scarecrow. Turner recognizes that creating a scarecrow is hard work and the committee appreciates the time and effort residents and business people put into making a scarecrow each year. “It isn’t always easy to come up with an idea and it takes quite a bit on

time,” recognized Turner. “However, our residents get behind it and lots of families bond over it. It can be a lot of fun and it’s exciting just checking them out each year.” Turner also says that the Chamber shows its appreciation by giving out Chamber Bucks as a monetary reward. This year the Best Overall Scarecrow will earn $300 in Chamber Bucks, not small potatoes. Runner-up in residential and business class will each earn $100. He hopes the competition will be tough in 2017. Scarecrow Days will run September 22 – 24 in Souris. The complete list of events is as follows: • Friday - noon barbecue at RBC; Royal Canadian Meat Draw; Barn Dance at Murphy’s Irish Pub with live entertainment by Bethel Road, a country band featuring
