Wawota celebrates Heritage Days

Over the August Long Weekend Wawota celebrated their Heritage Days in the valley.

Heritage Days actually began in the 1950s and then there were a number of years when it didn’t happen. The decision was made to bring it back again in 2015 and has been going on ever since.

The Heritage Days kicked off with a parade on Friday afternoon followed by everyone heading down to the valley to take in the events there.

Although attendance was down this year, everyone attending had a good time.

The Ranch Rodeo was scheduled to be in conjuction with this year’s Heritage Days but due to the high number of entries in the Gymkhana there just wouldn’t be enough time to hold both events.

“Kids Gymkhana had over 30 participants each day,” explains Kathy Hamilton, committee member of Wawota Heritage Days.

The Gymkhana helped fill in the weekend, giving the people coming to Heritage Days something else to do. It went really well and people seemed to enjoy it.

“Wheels and Saddles Show and Shine was well received,” says Hamilton.

This year, those who came out to enjoy Wawota’s Heritage Days got their money’s worth.

The Long Weekend event gave young and old a chance to come out and have some very affordable fun.

Families come into

the valley to watch the youngsters take part in the Gymkhana or visit and relax under the tent for shade. It also means that kids can play on the Slip and Slide, go to the Dino Dig, play on the Bouncy Castles, or just run around and meet their friends! There was no extra cost for any of those kid’s activities.

opportunity to enjoy a roast beef supper and stay to enjoy the Talent Show including Hal Garrett the cowboy poet, Amaya Drumm and her gymnastics routine and of course the fireworks!

Moose Mountain Marlins win Provincial U13 Championship Submitted by Jamie Barnett The U13-Tier 5 Provincial Baseball Championship took place in Moosomin Saskatchewan from July 26 to 28. This was an 8-team tournament with teams from all over the province, including the Moose Mountain Marlins. The Marlins were comprised of players from the Kipling, Corning, Carlyle, Oxbow and Alameda and all played house baseball in the Moose Mountain Baseball League.

The first game played by the Marlins was on Friday, July 26 vs the Edam Blue Sox. The Marlins broke the 9-0 game open after the 5th inning with 19 runs in the top of the sixth inning. Pitching and fielding played a part in the Marlins 28-0 victory.

On Saturday, July 27, the Marlins played two games. Their first

game matched the Marlins up against a team from Kindersley. The boys came out strong on the bats, combining great pitching and a stellar defense to walk away with a 13-2 victory in just 4 innings.

The second game the Marlins took on the Carnduff Astros. It took a few innings, but with strong pitching and great fielding the Marlins were able to walk away with a 13-3 victory after 4 innings.

The semi-final matchup on Sunday, July 28 had the Marlins up against the host Moosomin Rangers.

Moosomin came out of the gate strong, but the Marlins made it 5-3 after the first inning. Pitching and fielding stayed hot and the Marlins walked away with a 16-3 win at the end of the 4th.

The Carnduff Astros’ semi final victory over a team from Watrous led them to square off

against the Marlins in the provincial Final.

Carnduff was backed by some very strong pitching and held an 8-2 lead going into the bottom of the third inning.

The Marlins were able to claw back into the game and took the lead in the bottom of the 4th inning 9-8. Carnduff got a run back in the top of the fifth, and the game was tied 9-9 after 5.

In the sixth inning the Marlins were able to hold the Carnduff Astros to no runs due to some quality fielding and strong pitching. In the bottom of the sixth, the Marlins were able to get two runners on base with no outs, and a base hit brought home the winning run. The final game was a real nail bitter and could have gone either way. The Carnduff Astros players, coaches and fans should be commended on a highly entertaining provincial final game. It was ob-

things spruce up and produce much more. I’ve notice that the crops are beginning to turn color, hope it’s due to the mature timing and not due to the hot weather, burning up the crop. Oh the worries of the farmer – always something to cause worries.

The swimming pool is where most of the activity is – great to see that the pool is so popular and being utilized by those who do enjoy it. Lifeguards are earning their wages these days. You are all doing a GREAT job – keep it up.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Kathy (Bill) Anthony on the death of her Aunt Dorothy (Taylor) Mitchell on July 29, 2019 at Sunset Haven, Carnduff. She was 105 years of age. A public graveside service

was held at Oxbow Cemetery on Aug. 2 and then a public funeral service at the Glen Ewen Gospel Hall which was followed be a friendship luncheon. Condolences are also extended to all other family members.

Justin and Kamala (Watson) Pilgrim of Red Deer, AB arrived at Val Puskas on July 28 and while there visited with Marie Jensen and Roy Swanton, Ken, Shelly and Jorden Vail, Norma Coffey, Shana Patterson and family, Susan Fuller and Tyson Puskas and Oliver. On July 31 they left to go to Weyburn to visit Kamala’s mother Sharon (Jensen) Watson Then they continued on to L.A. where they visited with a member of Justin’s family.

Family members from Wawota travelled to Regina last Tuesday to attend a memorial service at Speers Family Centre in memory of the late Peter Charles. Peter passed away May 24.

Wawota bids a fond farewell to the King’s Store in Wawota. We have appreciated their good business practices, their friendly attitude and their service to the community. After 45 years and with a deteriorating building they

have decided to retire.

We wish them well in the future years.

Reports from the pie Baking Contest at the Heritage Days are that from 13 entries Bev Niebergall won for best cream pie and Shirley Corkish won for best fruit pie. Bev edged Shirley out for best over all pie and was the blue ribbon winner. Thanks to all who made the effort to make and donate their pies.

Someone must have left the oven door open these last few days – it was been very hot out there. If one had to be outside the only nice place to be was at the swimming pool – otherwise one just stayed indoors where the air conditioner could keep you cool. Do feel for those who must spend their day out of doors despite the hot days or cold days, although one can always add more clothes on, but one can only take so many off.

Oh well guess one just has to grin and bare it, can’t do anything about it anyway. And anyway before one knows it we’ll be complaining cause it’s too cold.

Vacant seats should worry Moe

By Murray Mandryk Souris-Cannington is the exception that proves the rule when it comes most ridings.

For starters, it really hasn’t changed its penchant to vote Progressive Conservative/Saskatchewan Party for 44 years. This is a long stretch even for modern-day rural Saskatchewan ridings, all of which of which have been solidly Sask. Party since its incept two decades ago.

But what truly makes Souis-Cannington unique is that the governing party held the seat after the longest vacancy in the province’s history.

That doesn’t happen very often, which should be a warning to Premier Scott Moe and his Sask. Party government that seem comfortable allowing seats go vacant far more than year.

But before we go there, let us explore a little history.

Almost three decades ago, the Progressive Conservative wasn’t popular anywhere, even in rural Saskatchewan.

It was the late 1980s/early 1990s after the great SaskEnergy privatization fight and Grant Devine’s PCs found themselves sliding in the public opinion polls.

So bad was the situation that veteran PC MLAs like Bob Andrew (Kindersley), Graham Taylor (Indian Head-Wolseley), Colin Maxwell (Turtleford) and Eric Berntston (Souris-Moose Mountain) all found themselves leaving politics for a variety of reasons. (In the case of Berntson, he became one of the “GST Senators”, appointed by then PC prime minister Brian Mulroney to pass the harmonized sales tax increase through the Senate where it was being blocked by the majority Liberals.

The problem in Saskatchewan back then is there was no legislative rules as to how long a seat could remain vacant. Presumably fearful of even losing exceedingly safe seats like Kindersley (another of the few seats where voters haven’t changed allegiances in 44 years) and Souris-Moose Mountain, Devine ignored demands to hold by-elections.

The problem was made worse by the fact that the Devine PCs postponed the general election to the last possible moment by extending their mandate to the legal maximum of five years.

That meant voters in these ridings went without representation for the longest period in Saskatchewan history.

One first acts of the new Roy Romanow government was to institute a law in which no seat could go unrepresented for more than six months.

Unfortunately, the law contains an exception that says the premier does not have to call by-elections after 40 months (presumably, to avoid costly by-elections when elections, usually, 48 months or four years apart, are on the horizon.)

The seats of Regina Walsh Acres (represented by Warren Steinley) and Saskatoon Eastview (represented by Corey Tochor) will become vacant soon because both Sask. Party MLAs are nominated as federal Conservative candidates for the Oct. 21 election.

But Moe has delayed the next provincial general election (that really should be held this fall at or around the 48-month mark of the current Sask. Party mandate) until October 2020 to avoid conflict with the federal vote.

What all this now means is that unless the two MLAs decide to resign this week, nothing legally prevents their constituents from going unrepresented for more than an entire year until after the 2020 provincial election.

Of course, Moe could have a change of heart and hold by-elections any time after they resign. Unfortunately, the premier has offered little to suggest that this is his intent.

Moreover, we are currently seeing a cozy relationship between Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives and Moe’s Sask. Party that goes well beyond the two MLAs seamlessly joining federal Conservative ranks as candidates.

Of late, there has been a dustup between the Sask.

Party and federal Liberals over federal infrastructure spending that’s supposed to go the province. Evidently, the Sask. Party are trying to draw attention to the federal Liberals handing out pre-election goodies.

But what it really is putting political considerations over what’s best for voters.

That usually doesn’t work out well for the government.

It’s about showing up While listening to a speaker recently the audience was challenged to think about our connections to people and whether or not we had true friends. We were to imagine a scenario in which we received tragic news in the middle of the night and to question if there were people we could call who would be there for us in a heartbeat. In the days that followed the presentation my mind Shelley Luedtke thought back to a woman I’d never met but one I wouldn’t forget.

It was a December day several years ago. My husband was having a medical test done and we knew we would be at the hospital most of the day.

Our girls were quite young and since we needed to leave early in the morning we arranged for them to be taken to and from school, driven to their music lessons and looked after until we arrived home. I hadn’t a single worry about my children. We had good friends who were more than willing to help.

A few hours later I was flipping through a magazine at my husband’s bedside as he rested from the procedure. The curtains were drawn which gives the patient some degree of privacy but provides no barrier against any conversation taking place in the unit.

Activity beyond the curtain indicated a new patient was arriving and within moments a nurse began asking a few questions. I tried to focus on the magazine I was reading but it was impossible not to hear their conversation. There must not have been anyone with the patient because the nurse asked if perhaps someone was parking a vehicle and would be in the room shortly. The patient, who I could now hear was a woman, said she didn’t have anyone with her. The nurse asked how she had gotten to the hospital and the response was she had taken a taxi. The nurse again asked about someone being with her to which the woman replied—in words that remain with me—“I have no one.” Since her procedure would leave her groggy and requiring follow-up

care, the nurse asked how she would get back home and who could look in on her. The answer? “I will just call a cab. I have learned to look after myself.” I never saw the woman. I don’t know how old she was or what circumstances in life led her to a point where she believed her reality to be “I have no one,” but I remember that moment so clearly.

I am extremely grateful I could come up with names of those I know would be on my doorstep to help. If you can say the same, take a moment and fully appreciate what that means. But that’s just part of the equation. There is a challenge to each of us to turn the question around and instead of asking if we have someone to call at 2:00 in the morning, I think we should ask ourselves if there are people who would call us. There are times we will be in need and many times when we will be needed.

Sadly there are likely many in the situation of the woman at the hospital that December day. Maybe there were people who would have happily provided a ride to and from her procedure, someone who would have sat with her and simply held her hand, someone to be with her when she heard what the doctor had to say, or someone willing to make a cup of tea for her that evening. Maybe she didn’t feel comfortable asking. Did she fear rejection or harbor concern she would be considered a burden? How sad to think there are others who feel the same way.

The worst thing we can do is sit back and wait, or believe someone else could do it better. When it comes to helping it’s about showing up. Perhaps armed with tools, a pot of coffee or a plate of sandwiches. Perhaps empty-handed to simply hold the hand of those needing comfort. Perhaps we come to talk…or more importantly, to listen. People will remember less about what we did and more about the fact we showed up.

We need to respond to the calls when they come, but let’s make sure we’re not just waiting for the call.

We have to take the lead and offer what we can, when we can. Sometimes the offer might be politely declined or flat-out refused but that’s okay. So much better to offer and not be needed, than to be needed and never have offered. That’s my outlook.

Financial Focus Managing Your Money

Helping Canadians with disabilities save Thousands of Canadians have opened a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) since the program was introduced in 2008. Thousands more who qualify have not.

Here’s what you need to know.

• An RDSP is a federal government savings program that encourages parents and others to save for the longterm financial security of a person with a disability who is eligible for the Federal Disability Tax Credit (DTC).

• The beneficiary and/or their family and friends can contribute to an RDSP and any investment growth and income those contributions generate will accumulate on a tax-deferred basis. Contributions are not tax-deductible but can be made by anyone authorized by the holder of the plan up to maximum

lifetime contributions of $200,000 per beneficiary.

• The Canada Disability Savings Grants (CDSG)* is a matching program where a grant of up to 300% of contributions may be available, depending on the amount contributed and the family income of the beneficiary. The maximum annual grant room generated per year is $3,500, to a lifetime maximum of $70,000 received per beneficiary.

• The Canada Disability Savings Bond (CDSB)* is available to low and modest income Canadians irrespective of plan contributions. The maximum annual bond room generated per year is $1,000, to a lifetime maximum of $20,000 received per beneficiary.

When money is paid from an RDSP to the beneficiary

with a disability, it is called a Disability Assistance Payment (DAP). DAPs are one-time lump sum payments from the RDSP to a beneficiary or a beneficiary’s estate, but are restricted where the plan value consists primarily of government-funded benefits.

Lifetime Disability Assistance Payments (LDAPs) are annual payments that must begin no later than the end of the calendar year in which the beneficiary turns age 60. o The portion of the DAP that relates to regular contributions is non-taxable. Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • We have paint and we will use it. Thus, please stop spinning your tires on the new “Rainbow” cross walk at the elementary school.

It has already been re-painted twice. You don’t have to like it, and if you don’t like it, well don’t drive on that road. Pretty simple. I actually think it brightens up the road and I known the kids will like the bright colours.

We had five false alarms and one accidental 911 call. Tsk, tsk, grandchildren, you can spoil them but don’t trust them around a phone. We also assisted other agencies, including Social Services, Conservation and Corrections and unfortunately we had too many child welfare and mental health files. This is becoming more common and with the child welfare usually involves one or two unrealistic parents.

An individual was thought to be acting suspiciously near a farm field. Patrols were made and the individual confirmed they pulled over to relieve themselves. It is all about bladder control folks.

We need to do more to educate our young drivers. Now if your new driver borrows a vehicle and brings it back and fuels it up so as the parent does not realize it was gone. Great right? Well not always.

The young driver needs to also know the difference between diesel and gas. Now how did we find out about this you may ask. You see the parent thought someone dumped diesel into their vehicle, as in vandalism. It did not take long for the truth to come out.

We can’t just ignore 911 hangups and we always investigate them. Often we find the hangup was because someone caused another person to hangup the phone, or an individual may have called and hung up because the other individual was near or coming into the room. Recently a 911 hangup resulted in 2 people being charged for assault. This transpired when we attended and investigated the 911 hangup.

into their home when they were gone. The other party no longer had a key. The complainant did not want us to do anything, rather, they just wanted us to be aware. We are now aware.

• We have had several harassing communications investigations. Often the best way to resolve this is to block the number, or remove the other individual from your social media. The one investigations involves some threats to post inappropriate photos. The other one involves inappropriate comments via a letter, yes old school, but still harassing communications. Both investigations are continuing.

• Two friends began arguing. The police get called. One friend realizes the police are coming and leaves. Problem solved.

• One spouse is drunk and obnoxious, the other spouse is not. The police get called and the obnoxious spouse is not so obnoxious anymore, however they were still drunk and were provided a room for the night.

• Child has a couple drinks. Parent upset. Parent continues to be upset when Police arrive and don’t arrest the youth just because the parent wants the Police to arrest their child. We provided the youth a ride to another residence. The youth was happy, their parent was not. Unfortunately, it is not our job to make people happy. We try, that is all we can do, try.

• Does your child have a dirt bike? Are they driving it around the track at the school in Redvers? Maybe your child is deceiving you? Our investigation is continuing.

• Siblings were not getting along and allegations were flying back and forth. Upon arrival of the Police things calmed down.

• There were minor injuries during a collision between a semi and a smaller vehicle. The investigation resulted in the semi driver receiving a “Stop Sign” ticket, a failure to maintain a daily log ticket and a warning for driving with undue care and attention.

• Another collision involved a youth that rolled their vehicle. This was not reported for about an hour. We suspect there is more to the story, but, well we are suspicious types and get lied to a lot.

• An individual was pulled over for tinted windows and tail lights. They then failed to provide an adequate sample into an approved screening device and were charged for refusal. The vehicle was subsequently seized and the driver lost their licence. Refusing to provide a breath sample is the same punishment as impaired driving folks.

• Another individual was pulled over, began recording and yelling at the Member. This result was a ticket for inadequate tail lights. I can’t say for cer-

tain, however, cooperation would have likely just resulted in an inspection notice and saved the driver $115. The video was posted on social media. Sticks and stones will break our bones, but names will never hurt us. Well in reality the video did bother the Member and his family but, it is part of the job.

People call us names and make false allegations all the time.

• We had several erratic driver calls over the last week. Unfortunately white vehicles are too common and we did not locate these vehicles. Another import car, blue in colour was also looked for to no avail.

• Unfortunately for one company they did not realize a fuel card was being misused until several thousand dollars worth of fuel was charged to it. Our investigation is continuing.

• We had a wallet stolen from a vehicle and several ATM withdrawals had occurred before the owner noticed. Please lock you vehicle and don’t leave a PIN number near your bank cards.

• A vehicle was pulled over and seized for 30 days because the driver was suspended.

• Members were investigating possible drug use in a vehicle. Patrols were made and the vehicle was located. The passenger provided a fake name and they were arrested and charged for obstruction as well as numerous breach of release condition charges. How did we know? We are investigators and can not let out all our secrets. I will say this though, some people are bad liars. That, and the fact if everyone else in the vehicle can be found on our computers and you can’t. You are likely a liar.

• Another 72 hour suspension was issued and the individual also received a ticket for failing to comply with licence restriction.

• Members issued approximately 25 tickets and 30 warnings over the last week.

• Tickets were issued for fail to proceed when safe - $230, fail to maintain a daily log - $150, no insurance - $580, cell phone - $280, fail to produce registration - $100, fail to yield when making a turn $230, inadequate tail lights - $115, fail to stop at stop sign - $230, fail to produce drivers licence - $100, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, fail to comply licence restriction - $150 and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $210.

• Warnings were issued for drive with undue care and attention, fail to produce drivers licence, have liquor in a vehicle, no insurance, fail to properly secure licence plates, fail to stop at stop sign, excessive damage to windshield, cell phone and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for replace licence plate or properly locate licence plate, inadequate fenders or mudflaps, window tint, inadequate windshield, and inadequate muffler or exhaust.

Out of respect for trade marks and their legal implications, I won’t name any but one of our favourites involves lining up numbers in sequence. Here’s the procedure: Dump all the game pieces into a wellscrubbed plastic bucket. Next, someone sticks their fist into the contents, scrambling them thoroughly in order to prevent the other player from picking up both “freebie pieces.” Each player then pulls out a designated number of pieces. After setting up, sputtering at, and arranging the pieces on the plastic stand that holds them (in between the times it tips), the game is about to begin. First, however, each person is allowed one or two comments regarding the pieces they chose: “Doubles, nothing but doubles!” is one example. “This is lousy,” is another common expression.

these pursuits knows that some games depend solely on luck while others, on skill and a bit of finesse.

The one just described incorporates a bit of both.

Whatever the requirements, though, there is nothing more frustrating than losing with just one play left. I can’t describe the times when I’ve had just one number negate an entire game. The saying is true “almost” doesn’t count except in horseshoes…and in this game.

“Almost” really is a pain at times: almost arrived on time; almost passed the exam; or, almost caught the plane.

After listening to the Apostle Paul present the message of the gospel, King Agrippa cried out: “Paul, you almost persuade me to become a Christian.” “King,” Paul replied, “I would to God you might become both almost and altogether ….”

(Acts 26:28, 29) When it comes to enjoying God’s blessings, “altogether” always beats “almost!”

Exploring Ronald McDonald House

On July 31, families at more than 165 Ronald Mc/Donald Houses and Rooms throughout Canada and the United States, were provided with a meal prepared and served by consultants from the direct selling company ThirtyOne Gifts. This is the first time any corporate partner of RMHC has contributed to an event of this size. I was thrilled to lead the team at Saskatoon RMH, where thanks to the generosity of our community and other consultants, we were able to provide breakfast for supper to 87 residents of the house.

Touring the House was an eye-opening experience to everyone in the group. For only $10 per night a family with a child age 18 or under in hospital, can sleep in a clean, comfortable room together, across the street from the new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital and University Hospital. This is not only a huge cost saving room wise; it saves the

families the $20 per day parking expense as well.

The House provides 34 guest rooms, equipped with towels and linens, where families are responsible for the light housekeeping of their room, using the washers, dryers, and laundry supplies provided by the House. Once a week housekeeping is provided by paid staff. There are two fully equipped community kitchens and a large shared dining room and a deck outside, with BBQ’s, overlooking the wheelchair accessible playground.

There are phones in each room, with message manager and on shared long-distance phone with free calling, along with a computer common area with three internet equipped computer work stations and an art area. A fitness room overlooks the children’s playroom, so parents can workout while supervising their children. There are five television sitting areas, quiet sitting spaces and a multipurpose room for arts, crafts and games.

use rooms are equipped with napping chairs and breast pumps and a new garden space outside with a newly constructed pergola and gardens.

The kitchens contain fridge space and a personal pantry space is also provided. A breakfast program runs three mornings a week and rotational dinner programs, along with fresh baked cookies help make it feel like home.

Wheelchair accessibility throughout the home and complimentary WIFI, help families get around and keep in touch.

Approximately 1,500 families stay at the House each year, from all over the province and beyond. McDonalds covers approximately 20% of the House expenses with donations from corporations and individuals covering the remainder of the cost.

With the opening of the new Children’s Hospital imminent, one would expect the need for more rooms at the House. CEO Tammy Forrester, says that once children are well enough, they will be transferred to a regional hospital closer to home, which creates an entirely new dilemma for the families from RMH. While they are thrilled their child is one step closer to home, the lack of low-cost or subsidized housing is very real, and the need exists for another RMH, possibly in Regina. There are so many ways to contribute to RMH, from the quilt program (providing a quilt or afghan to each family as they leave the house), the gift program (a free stuffed animal or toy for the youngster and a video game or other items for the teens), to

Carlyle event lives up to its name

By David Willberg An event that has quickly grown into a popular attraction in the southeast region will soon be returning to Carlyle.

Carlyle Fun Dayz will take place in the downtown area on Aug. 17. It will start with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Carlyle Memorial Hall.

Activities are slated to happen throughout the day. A market is set for the Carlyle Memorial Hall at 9:30 a.m. A parade will make its way down Main Street at 11 a.m. A family fun zone will start at noon, with bumper cars and other attractions.

Also starting at noon will be karaoke and a fashion show at the Spectrum Main Stage, a show and shine at the PureChem parking lot on Main Street and food vendors on Main Street.

A velociraptor dinosaur will be appearing in the parade, and will be at the Home Hardware parking lot at 1 p.m.

High tea will be served at 2 p.m. at the Rusty Relics Museum.

Live music and a beer garden will start at 2 p.m.

Jennifer Sedor, who is the chairperson of the Fun Dayz committee, said people can look forward to a couple of popular acts returning for the live music: the Bromantics, who were at Fun Dayz in 2017, and the Milkman’s Sons, who performed last year.

Also schedule to perform are Carlyle’s The Hurricane Pilots and Forget’s 50-or-40.

“I’ve heard them all several times myself, and I’m excited to bring them to the public,” said Sedor. “The Bromantics are back by popular demand. They were a fan

favourite in 2017.”

The organizing committee is also in the midst of booking another band.

Sedor pointed out that all of the activities are free to attend, including the family fun zone.

“People can save their money on parking and admission, and hopefully spend it at our stores and at our local vendors and at our craft market,” she said.

Since this is the fourth year for Carlyle Fun Dayz, the festival is becoming more efficient to run. A lot of community organizations are on board, and the business community takes a big leadership role.

“We try not to canvass for sponsorships, so businesses come to us to sponsor the event. So we’ve had a really, really good response from people out of town,” she

“This event was created to focus on our local economy,” said Sedor. We are trying to bring something right to downtown Carlyle that is going to get people shopping. People are going to know what services we have. It’s going to put us on the map as a tourist destination in the summer.

“It’s really something where we can come together and showcase what we are as a town and as a community to our neighbouring municipalities and towns.”

Carnduff Astros win first Saskota title

By David Willberg of the Estevan Mercury The Carnduff Astros have enjoyed a lot of success since the team’s inception about 15 years ago, highlighted by two provincial titles.

But until this season, they had never won the Jack Harbourne Memorial Tournament, which crowns the Saskota Baseball League champions each year.

The Astros defeated the Arcola Threshers 15-4 on July 28 at Kenosee Lake to win the tournament.

It was one of the more unlikely championships in league history, as the Astros were the fifth-ranked team in the league during the regular season with a 6-8-2 record, while the Threshers finished seventh at 4-10-2.

“It’s a great thing,” said Astros player Kelby Trimble, who was a co-founder of the team around 2004. “There are a few of our guys that have been chasing it for a lot of years, and we just had a great weekend of baseball.”

The Harbourne opened with a round robin. The top four teams in the regular season had their games at home on July 26. Then the tournament shifted to Kenosee on July 27 and 28 for the final round robin games and the playoffs.

Each team went 2-1 in the round robin; in the Astros case, they opened with a 7-6 victory over the Redvers A’s on July 26 in Redvers. They lost 7-6 to the Oxbow Chiefs, who were the top-ranked team in the league during the regular season, and then edged the Kenosee Cubs 3-2 in the final round robin game

Arcola knocked off the Chiefs in one semifinal. (Score was not available). The Astros, meanwhile, edged the two-time defending league champions, the Estevan Tap House Wolves, 2-1 in the other semi.

“There were a lot of good things, over the weekend, that we did,” said Trimble. “One big thing was staying positive. Even when you made an error or you struck out, there was always somebody there to pick you up.”

In the final, the Astros were riding a high after beating the Wolves. According to Trimble, Estevan played great defensively and received great pitching in the semifinal game.

“That was the big difference going into the final, was that everyone was really confident, and we were playing as a team,” he said.

Against the better teams they faced in the tournament, he said the Astros came up big offensively and played error-free ball defensively.

Trimble noted that throughout the years, the Astros have had a lot of good players going, and on paper, thought they had a good chance to win the Harbourne tournament. But the last time they were in

the league final, in 2006 or 2007, they were still using aluminium bats.

“Winning this league was one thing I wanted to do before I stepped away,” he said.

Provincial titles came in 2010 and 2014.

And while they were under .500 during the regular season this year, the Astros scored more runs than they allowed.

“We had … five guys that played their first year of senior baseball this year,” said Trimble.

The Astros never had their full lineup together until late in the season, because the

veterans weren’t always there. The young players had to learn a lot at the beginning of the year, and made some mistakes that changed games.

Once the full lineup was in place, the team started coming together.

“We had a lot of close games against the top four teams. We didn’t play so great against the bottom end teams, but our biggest goal was to make the Harbourne tournament this year.”

And as this year showed, once teams get to the Harbourne, anything can happen.

By Nick Nielsen Discover Estevan Back in 2007, just six miles south of Wawota, an unfortunate accident where Blake Lamontagne rolled his truck became a life-changing few seconds.

Lamontagne became a paraplegic, and the athlete started to have a hard time finding what drove his passion for the next seven years.

“I had gone out and I had played hockey, I tried wheelchair basketball and all these different sports but I ultimately knew how to play them in a different way. It just wasn’t quite ‘it’ for me. I was struggling all over the map back then.”

It wasn’t until the summer of 2014 when Lamontagne finally found that flame that he had once again, and this time it was in the water. A friend of his convinced him to try water skiing.

“At the time I was not really doing much and my buddy Cowboy told me that I was going out to try this. He’s gotten me involved in all kinds of sports and stuff and I never really took to any of them. He told me I was going out to this water skiing give-ita-go kind of thing and as soon as they got me behind the boat, I didn’t want to let go.”

While most people think of the typical two skis and a rope behind the boat, there is what’s called a slalom ski, which is just a single ski that both feet are strapped too which ends up being much faster than

a set of skis.

Lamontagne uses a modified slalom ski that allows him to sit down with his feet planted. He leaves his wheelchair, sits down on the ski while still at the dock, and is pulled away.

“I got to leave my disability at the dock. My wheelchair was there and I got to go out and just be me and there was nothing holding me back.”

The open water became an obsession for Lamontagne and in just five years of skiing, he’s been a part of Team Canada at World’s twice, and he has become one of the top competitors in the world. He competes in three different events, tricks, slalom, and jump.

For trick, you get two 20 second passes to do as many tricks either by jumping off the wake or on the water that you can. Slalom, similar to downhill skiing, you go through a set of gates set up in the water and the winner is determined through speed, the precision of the turns, and rope length. Finally, for jump, the boat takes you at the ramp that’s either 4.5 feet high or 5.5 feet as with a top speed of 57kph, and it’s a distance competition.

This year at World’s in Norway, Lamontagne pulled off the best trick run that he personally has done, and as a result, it also happened to be the best trick run a Canadian had ever put together by scoring 940 points. The previous record was in the 870-

880 area according to Lamontagne. In just his second run at World’s, Lamontagne scored well enough for 8th place in the entire competition and actually led his division.

“There’s actually just a new rule that I found out about right before the competition. We actually reshuffled my entire trick run right before I went out and did it.”

The new rule allowed Lamontagne to pull off all of his tricks on the water rather than in the air, including a full 720 spin followed by a reverse of the same trick, which he says was one of the major factors that gave him the win Canadian record.

“I was very nervous. When I went out in the preliminaries, I was just aiming to have fun and do the best that I could. I know when I start fixating on winning, I start following and I get into my own head.”

For Lamontagne, the sport has been transformative. While he says that working out isn’t necessary to keep up in this sport, he feels like the tough gym regiment he keeps helps him continue to improve, and he never even had the sport on his considered before.

“Don’t be afraid to stick your neck out and try something new. Water skiing wasn’t even on my radar. Ever. I did it once when I was 12 or 13, and now I wake up to prepare myself for the next one.”

Lamontagne is heading out for Canadian Nationals starting in mid-August.

We appreciate the donations of saskatoons, raspberries and strawberries. They and the vegetables delighted our taste buds and prompted our memories. Circle of Friends told of berry picking. In 1977, Joyce Gillis and her brother drove in his old truck to the Okanagan to pick fruit. The thinned out to apple crop to make them grow bigger; and picked peaches, apricots, cherries and pears, and finally the apples. The grower had cabins for them to live in, but pack rats stole their socks, and always left something in return.

Charlotte’s grandpa had an orchard, and while they were picking a skunk strolled under the tree.

Fred and Marianne knew GOOD spots where they filled two 5 gallon pails and ice cream pails with saskatoons.

While Ralph Mills was picking from a high

branch he fell over backwards, but never spilled a berry.

Grace drove miles, and came back with cream cans full.

Ruth Dennis canned them until she was sick of them.

Leona picked in the Cromer Valley. She heard a groan, and ran from the bear.

Ralph Burke’s favorite was saskatoons with sugar and cream.

Aileen picked wild strawberries under the wolf willows. While camping at Oxbow Marie picked chokecherries; and made syrup and jelly. At home she canned 100 quarts of raspberries.

Janet’s quota was 50 quarts, before calling in the neighbors. When Clifford was picking raspberries in the pasture he stumbled on a bee’s nest. He ran

away, but they followed and stung him.

Margaret remembered picking wild blueberries in the grass with her bent over grandma, who out picked her.

Violet was returning with a tub full of saskatoons in front of her in the buggy. The horse stopped for nature’s call. The buggy ran up on her and the fruit was ruined.

Maryfield Fair Day was cold for many horses, but too cold to sit and watch for us. A grade two friend showed me her artwork, and I was impressed with the Senior brochures of Famous Artists. Maryfield School goes all out on Fair Days. Many years as secretary to the treasurer at Redvers Fair brought back memories. My son, age 13, won a draw for a weanling pig and had to carry the screaming thing, in front of all his classmates. Mary entered eight baking classes in Junior Cooking. Even with an electric stove she ran out of pots and pans. “Next year you do you own dishes.” The children at Maryfield had a magician to watch. Congratulations to the many people who make a Fair come together.

A strange weed appeared in the front door flowerbed here. My weed book confirmed a Russian Thistle. Sign of a dry year? Shades of the Dirty Thirties, when the fences on the open prairie filled up with Tumbling Tumbleweeds. The seeds can survive through wet years until the right dry conditions come along.

Clarice Ada Zorn (nee Maunder), late of Midale, SK passed away on Friday, July 26, 2019 at Mainprize Manor, Midale, SK at the age of 84 years.

Clarice was predeceased by her parents, John and Rose Maunder; first husband Joseph Feusi; second husband Don Zorn, grandson Wade Tannas and sister Betty Nesbitt.

Left with loving memories are Clarice’s children Carson Feusi; Denise Feusi (John Szmigielski), Patty (Dale) Tannas, Teresa (Ron) Vandermeulen and Lisa Feusi. Clarice will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Roseanna (Travis), Adam (Melissa), Jolene, Jeremy (Casey), Justin, Jordan, Amber and Brittany; and her three great grandchildren Taylor Feusi and Aniela and Brynley Stendall. Clarice is also survived by her five sisters, Olive (Ken) Bell, Gladys Maunder, Margie (Adam) Manastryski, Jackie (Thom) Wentzell and Jean (Brian) Petzel.

A Graveside service was held at the Arcola Cemetery on Friday, August 2, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. with Sandy Dalziel officiating. Family and friends attending.
