Carnduff Astros win first Saskota title

By David Willberg of the Estevan Mercury The Carnduff Astros have enjoyed a lot of success since the team’s inception about 15 years ago, highlighted by two provincial titles.

But until this season, they had never won the Jack Harbourne Memorial Tournament, which crowns the Saskota Baseball League champions each year.

The Astros defeated the Arcola Threshers 15-4 on July 28 at Kenosee Lake to win the tournament. It was one of the more unlikely championships in league history, as the Astros were the fifth-ranked team in the league during the regular season with a 6-8-2 record, while the Threshers finished seventh at 4-10-2.

“It’s a great thing,” said Astros player Kelby Trimble, who was a co-founder of the team around 2004. “There are a few of our guys that have been chasing it for a lot of years, and we just had a great weekend of baseball.”

The Harbourne opened with a round robin. The top four teams in the regular season had their games at home on July 26. Then the tournament shifted to Kenosee on July 27 and 28 for the final round robin games and the playoffs.

Each team went 2-1 in the round robin; in the Astros case, they opened with a 7-6 victory over the Redvers A’s on July 26 in Redvers. They lost 7-6 to the Oxbow Chiefs, who were the top-ranked team in the league during the regular season, and then edged the Kenosee Cubs 3-2 in the final round robin game to qualify for the semis.

Arcola knocked off the Chiefs in one semifinal.

(Score was not available). The Astros, meanwhile, edged the two-time defending league champions, the Estevan Tap House Wolves, 2-1 in the other semi.

“There were a lot of good things, over the weekend, that we did,” said Trimble. “One big thing was staying positive. Even when you made an error or you struck out, there was always somebody there to pick you up.”

In the final, the Astros were riding a high after beating the Wolves. According to Trimble, Estevan played great defensively and received great pitching in the semifinal game.

“That was the big difference going into the final, was that everyone was really confident, and we were playing as a team,” he said.

Against the better teams they faced in the tournament, he said the Astros came up big offensively and played error-free ball defensively.

Trimble noted that throughout the years, the Astros have had a lot of good players going, and on paper, thought they had a good chance to win the Harbourne tournament. But the last time they were in the league final, in 2006 or 2007, they were still using aluminium bats.

“Winning this league was one thing I wanted to do before I stepped away,” he said.

Provincial titles came in 2010 and 2014.

And while they were under .500 during the regular season this year, the Astros scored more runs than they allowed.

“We had … five guys that played their first year of senior baseball this year,” said Trimble.

The Astros never had their full lineup together until late in the season, because the veterans weren’t always there. The young players had to learn a lot at the beginning of the year, and made some mistakes that changed games.

Once the full lineup was in place, the team started coming together.

“We had a lot of close games against the top four teams. We didn’t play so great against the bottom end teams, but our biggest goal was to make the Harbourne tournament this year.”

And as this year showed, once teams get to the Harbourne, anything can happen.

Arcola’s Buddy’s Pub one of the few opera houses left in Saskatchewan

By Macie Hall Discover Estevan A hidden gem in Arcola Saskatchewan goes by the name on Buddy’s Pub. Buddy’s Pub is one of the three opera houses left in Saskatchewan. It was built in 1906 and features one of the longest bars in western Canada. Ronny Aschenbrenerr, the owner of Buddy’s took over 12 years ago and loves her job. She explains that she adored Saskatchewan and its �lat look so much that she made it apart of her 5-year plan to own a pub in the province. When she found Buddy’s she admired the woodworking and couldn’t say no to the place.

Aschenbrenner explains “I like Saskatchewan!

I like �lat, I love the feel of �lat. so I put a newspaper under my arm and said I’m looking for a pub in Saskatchewan. This place was beautiful. I couldn’t really afford it but I couldn’t afford to leave it behind.”

Before Buddy’s was a pub in 1990, the building was used as many different things including a library, �ire department, dance hall, and theatre. Buddy’s is also the location for many wedding anniversaries giving that several weddings took place in the dance hall which brings back regular customers.

The beloved pub is home to good customer service, good food, and great conversation. It is available for celebrations such as birthdays, Christmas parties, and Valentine dinners. It is also recommended that you stop in on Thursdays at 5 for their famous rack of ribs.

Alameda’s Dorrance wins top honours

By David Willberg of the Estevan Mercury Alameda’s Tyren Dorrance has been one of the best players in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League this season, and has been rewarded for his strong play.

Dorrance, an out�ielder with the Southeast Performance Pump midget AAA Twins, was named the league’s most valuable player July 26.

He also took home the batting title, an award that recognizes the top offensive player in the league.

Both awards are determined by a vote among the league’s coaches.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. It still hasn’t set in quite yet,” he told Lifestyles. “It’s a huge honour to be picked for MVP and the batting award.”

Dorrance led the league in batting average (.505), slugging percentage (.632), onbase percentage (.832), on-base plus slugging percentage (1.465) and

home runs (four). He was also second in runs batted in (33).

“I was way more consistent this year,” said Dorrance. “I wasn’t as streaky as I was last year, and I stayed consistent throughout the whole year. I worked on my power in the offseason, so I had lots more extra base hits and home runs this year.”

Defensively, he recorded four out�ield assists while not registering an error.

“I made the recent switch to out�ield in the offseason this last year, and I got real comfortable really quickly and made zero errors on the year,” said Dorrance.

A lot of players in the league would have been worthy selections for the awards, he said, and he’s excited he was chosen for the honours.

Dorrance has committed to played baseball for the Taft Community College Cougars in Taft, Cal., next season. Winning the two awards will give him a lot more con�idence as enters colle-

giate baseball.

“I can always go back to what I know in California if I’m ever struggling,” he said.

But he’s also sad knowing that his minor baseball career is over.

He spent years playing in Alameda’s minor baseball system, and then played bantam for the Southeast A’s program, which is also based in Alameda.

His midget years were spent with the Twins, who boast players from throughout southeast Saskatchewan.

He also played high school baseball for Martin Collegiate in Regina the last two years, giving him a chance to continue playing baseball once the minor ball season was �inished, and to receive additional training.

Dorrance also played tribute to the contributions of his father, Trent.

“He helped coach me along the way, every step. He’s a big factor in me getting to where I am today.”

#keepingfamiliesclose

By Mary Moffat On Friday, July 26, Carlyle and surrounding communities opened their hearts and their wallets to show just how much Ronald McDonald House means to them.

The fundraising BBQ held to raise funds to feed the families staying in Saskatoon’s House was a rousing success, with $921.12 raised thus far. Jamie Henderson and her son Cooper travelled to Carlyle from Gainsborough to support the initiative. Cooper was diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia, SVT for short, and his family was blessed to stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon while he was treated for this condition. His grandparents also came out to give support to the House that provided comfort to the family.

If you have a summer-themed photo from the region that you feel might just be good enough to ‘WOW!’ email it to us at observer@sasktel.net with the subject line “Summer Times Photo Contest”. Photos should be transmitted via email in their highest resolution. Photos that do not meet resolution requirements will not be considered in the contest.

One winner will be chosen every week, and that photo will grace the front page of the Summer Times newspaper for that week.

In the final issue of the Summer Times, a winner will be chosen from all the weekly winners, and that lucky person will be given a grand prize!

Meeting her heroes What a night for Cheryl and Zoey Dubois!

On Friday, July 26 the mother and daughter duo got to meet some of their heroes - the STARS crew that �lew Cheryl to Regina on March 2, 2019, after an MVA that both her and Zoey were involved in.

The two were given a tour of the facility and were allowed to bring all of their family members.

They presented the crew with a cheque for $7,000 from the fundraising dance held back in April.

It was a very special, emotional night. Cheryl is so grateful to the crew who rescued her, to the STARS program, to everybody who donated and helped out at the dance, and to her family and friends who are helping her through this journey.
