Team alumni Dan Rashovich, former linebacker for 16 seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, is now backing up a foundation dedicated to researching and improving treatments for children’s cancer. At a lunch and learn presentation at Crescent Point Energy Corp., he was joined by fellow alumni offensive tackle Andrew Greene to acknowledge the company as the foremost financial donor.

The Believe in the Gold Foundation was started six years ago in Calgary by Shonalie Biafore, and has now spread to Saskatchewan. Her daughter Jacey, was diagnosed in 2010 with a very rare cancer called Erwin’s Sarcoma, similar to the cancer Terry Fox had. Jacey passed away in 2012 but left behind the catch phrase “Believe”. Her mother started a foundation funding research into new treatments for children, and offer financial support to local families with children who had been diagnosed with cancer.

The funds are split between local families at 45 per cent, research at 45 per cent, and the final 10 per cent towards raising awareness. The research funds go directly to support the work of Dr. Doug Mahoney at the University of Calgary for immunotherapy as a cancer treatment.

“It’s in the midst of revolutionizing cancer therapy,” said Mahoney.

In the last decade immunotherapy has become the “fourth pillar” in cancer treatments.

Biafore had wanted to fund new treatments and that brought her to Mahoney. The oncology team at the Alberta Children’s Hospital that had treated her daughter reached out to him on her behalf.

After a discussion of his research, particularly with viral immunotherapy along with a recommendation from the Alberta Children’s Hospital also funding this research, she decided to allocate 45 per cent of the money raised towards the research of the new treatment as well as donate to the Cummings School of Medicine, the medical department of the University of Calgary where Mahoney has his lab.

“It’s based around the idea that viruses are essentially to us like little programmable robots. In a nutshell, the viruses are engineered to infect the cancer cells and start to kill them.

It is also engineered to help the patient’s im-

mune system learn what cancer is, what it looks like, and to help it seek out and destroy it. It basically like a two-part system,” said Mahoney.

Immunotherapy was approved in 2011 by the FDA and has shown very promising results in treating melanoma (skin cancer) and lung cancer.

The causes of childhood cancer to this day remain unknown.

Alterations in adult DNA that are caused by smoking for example might be easier to track, but in children there are no known causes. Mahoney’s research is based on finding a treatment specifically for children with cancer.

With 45 per cent of the money raised supporting families in the province, this was one of the important parts that brought Crescent Point aboard as a supporter, according to Taralyn French who was in charge of health and wellness for the company. “We helped 17 families last year. Crescent Point has done a lot for our community and it’s so nice to see that it’s affecting our local families. It makes you proud to work here that’s for sure.” French was also the organizer for the August 22 lunch and learn.

Mahoney added that parents often have to take a leave of absence or even quit their jobs where treatment for kids with cancer is involved.

“Parents sometimes have to move from a rural area to a city for a long period of time (for treatment for their kids).

As great as our health care system is, not all of the expenses are covered all the time.”

that are not so nice. So if there were a better way of treating people, they would certainly choose it,” said Mahoney.

This year’s annual Believe in the Gold Foundation will be

hosting a walk and run in Wascana on Saturday, September 22, and Rashovich encourages everyone to come out.

“It’s kind of like a mini Disneyland. It’s the best way to describe it.

They will be throwing around footballs with Roughrider alumni in their jerseys. There will be therapy dogs, Rider tattoos for the kids, face painting and golden balloons.”

ALS Walk raises over $19,000 Submitted On Saturday, August 11, 2018 Carlyle SK hosted its first Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) walk. ALS, sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is very rare.

It is a disease of the nervous system that weakens the muscles and also affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure at this time for ALS. The Walk, held in Carlyle, has currently raised $19,681.00 and this number continues to rise, much like the temperature that day. Mayor Orsted was on site to greet and welcome walkers, volunteers and onlookers. Music by Trever Gould filled the air as the 72 walkers were ready to begin the 3 or 5 km trek.

There were also a variety of activities for all ages, these activities included, bouncy houses, raffle table, face painting, silent auction, and the punch board.

On behalf of ALS we would like to thank Stacey Faber for designing and creating the beautiful ALS HOPE bracelets.

Also we are very grateful to Angie Cliffe for designing the BBQ scrapers. Both of which quantities are still available.

Trick-rider rodeo performer’s last show Theresa Nett Observer Staff

Sixteen-year-old Ciera Romanow, and her horse Yanky, made their last performance at the Arcola Rodeo on August 10. A previous injury to the rider’s ankle turned out to be serious enough

to prevent her from performing stunts again.

It was Romanow’s fourth year in a row doing a “show” at the Arcola Rodeo. “Arcola was my last show. My ankle just can’t handle it,” said Romanow. “Last summer on June 25 I broke my ankle in seven

She spent two months in a cast but it didn’t stop her from competing at the rodeo with her broken ankle.

“I just had to have a doctor’s note. I still barrel raced.” But her injury will have a long-term affect on other aspects of her life as well. “It’s disappointing because I’m also really into volleyball, and I was on the track and field team at school again this year.

I like hurdles a lot, but sometimes my ankle just gives out, and I trip a lot.”

Romanow had taken a trick-riding clinic with Niki Flundra, a stuntwoman for the T.V. series Heartland, a few lessons, and then practised for one and a half years before she gave her first rodeo show. “I think I will miss the “show” part. Butts and wisdom

By Linda Wegner This week I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about butts. Cigarette butts, that is. To begin with, I have to clarify a couple of things: my personal experience with cigarettes is limited to one occasion and I am neither qualified not desirous of condemning anyone else for their habits.

I have to admit that over these past few weeks butts have inflamed my usually calm demeanour, though; I have been, in fact, furious upon finding dozens of them laying on or near tinder dry grass and other flammables.

To make matters even worse, many I’ve found are scattered within mere feet from houses, including ours. With the fire season being what it is, I scratch my head in wonderment that

anyone could be so flagrantly careless of the remains of their habit.

Now that I’ve had my rant, here’s my next question: “What do butts have to do with the book of Proverbs?”

In my wildest imaginations I find it hard to believe that Solomon or his father, King David, struggled with finding a place to dispose of cigarette butts but both of them have a lot to say about wisdom. Wisdom, the soundness of a decision or action, is essential to a life that honors God and blesses others.

I’m the first to admit that this is an unusual topic for an article based on the Bible but when you think about it, wisdom goes far beyond personal habits, scholastic, economic, social or any other considerations one can think of.

I’m writing in response to the editorial column

by Theresa Nett in the August 24th edition titled “And you thought GMO’s were bad in food... try baby’s”.

Whether you are for or against babies, I mean GMOs, in food, the writer’s argument does nothing to actually inform the discussion.

In the headline it is assumed that EVERYONE thinks GMO products are bad.

The term “GMO” is a complex and misused term that has become widespread as of late and is essentially a catch-all term designed to take a very complex idea and extremely over simplify it, as well as instill panic in people who are less knowledgeable about the science behind it. GMO products and the science behind it are too complicated to pigeon hole into a simple 3 letter buzz word.

The only part of the column I can agree with is that pesticides are bad for you. Too much pesticide on your fruits and veggies can be harmful for people, and that’s why there are federally enforced laws and guidelines when it comes to the allowances in the produce you buy.

Hormones on the other hand are found naturally in products you buy and the amounts are microscopic per serving. And yes, that includes even natural, grass-fed, all-organic beef. A 75-gram serving of beef from cattle treated with hormone implants contains two nanograms (one nanogram is approximately one billionth of a gram) of estrogen. “A person would need to eat 3,000,000 hamburgers made with beef from implanted cattle to get as much estrogen as the average adult woman produces every day, or 50,000 hamburgers to get as much estrogen as the average adult man produces every day,” Source: Dr. Reynold Bergen, science director, Beef Cattle Research Council.

“Recent results of risk assessments on hormonal substances including estradiol-17, progesterone, testosterone, zeranol, trenbolone, and melengestrol acerate (MGA) indicate that natural steroid hormones have negligible human health impact when they are used under good veterinary practices, and for synthetic hormone-like substances, ADIs and MRLs are provided for the protection of human health.”

Scorpions shells in tomatoes. A quick google search brings up your article as the first result and I couldn’t find any mention of it elsewhere.

I also have questions on how the scorpion shells get into the tomatoes. By that logic, people should be concerned that fertilizer is used in farming.

In various parts of the world people eat scorpions. Grilled, fried, raw - take your pick. So yes, scorpions have been and still are a part of some human diets.

Tomatoes do not lose all their nutritional content over a “few days” through “evaporation”. Fruits and vegtables do lose nutrients naturally via respiration after harvesting, and some are more prone to it than others. Your next point is on the nutritional value difference. Studies are still unsure if organics contain more vitamins and nutrients than their non-organic counter parts. “The published literature lacks strong evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods. This slippery slope column is now trying to explain that genetically modified food products will somehow lead to a “scientist person” hacking up your DNA with no regard for how it may affect you or future generations. The lack of a grasp on scientific methodology is startling.

I’ll skip down to the paragraph that mentions “The Cripsr - Cas9” (its actually CRISPR). It was very professionally referred to as “the Crapper”.

CRISPR-Cas9 is a system found in bacteria and involved in immune defence. Bacteria use CRISPR/ Cas9 to cut up the DNA of invading bacterial viruses.

Scientists have found ways to use CRISPR to cut and edit DNA, and recent techniques do not involve any cutting of the DNA strand. Currently only a few labs around the world work with human embryos and are highly regulated and carefully watched. Currently, most labs work with mice or plant DNA as they try to

For the sake of argument I will assume that’s true. You called it outlandish for some reason. Using the current world population that means potentially 380,000,000 people could benefit from use of gene editing. “Barely any beneficial results” ?

With what appears to be no research, no editing, and no coherent thought or vision, this column appears to give misleading statements as fact and is sub-par for a paper with a history dating back over 80 years.

I’d like to point out that I have no issue with a person’s desire to buy organic foods. The humane treatment of animals and fewer chemicals in crops is definitely something I support. The issue I have is people pushing views filled with personal opinions and falsehoods while claiming to be correct. A simple Google search would easily give a reader a more informed view.

An ongoing game of dominoes A pilot in Calgary was late for work so I got a nasty blister on my right foot. That’s my story…. sort of.

Shelley Luedtke After Christmas I was feeling nostalgic now that our young adult daughters are away from home working and going to school. I wanted to try and get us together for a summer holiday to one of our favourite places, so for months we looked forward to time together in Disneyland. On the morning of our departure we were at the airport at the duly appointed time-actually a bit early because that’s just what we do.

We waited. And waited. It was announced they were looking for a pilot in Calgary to bring the plane to Saskatoon. We kept waiting.

Following a 3-hour delay we were on our way to catch a connecting flight to Los Angeles--a flight that was now in question. As we began our descent into Calgary a flight attendant asked passengers to please let those heading to LA disembark first. I’ve been on flights where others have been in a similar situation and was disappointed to see how few waited. On this day however, like a scene at the Red Sea, passengers parted and cleared the aisle for us. We were so grateful and made sure we said thank you many times as we hurried past. At the front of the plane a flight attendant said, “Good luck you guys, it’s going to be close.”

So we ran. The family that plans so diligently and keeps to schedules found ourselves tearing across the airport and trying to clear customs at break neck speed. As we got closer to our gate we heard our names being paged in a final call. We ran down the gangway to the plane and began the trek down the aisle to our seats--which of course had to be back in row 26--all the while wanting to tell passengers how

sorry we were…that this wasn’t our fault.

We made it to LA. But our luggage didn’t. We checked into our hotel with little more than our wallets and tickets to the theme park, but then again… what else might we need! We laughed a lot and I spent my first day at Disneyland in a pair of shoes I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen, which led to the blister in question, along with a series of pictures in clothes we likely won’t wear anytime soon.

It’s sometimes called causality, or the domino effect, and it seeks to explain how one action has a relationship on the events that follow. A late employee can cause problems for work or an event. Illness, injury or a change of heart affects not only our plans, but the plans of others whose agendas were tied into ours. But there can be some amazing things that take place as a result, too. Revamped schedules may put us in the path of someone we might not otherwise have met. Grace extended to one could encourage it be extended to another. Think of the domino effect of frustration, criticism or rudeness versus one of optimism, encouragement, or even a simple smile.

There were a lot of falling dominoes in our experience. We could choose to focus on the pilot at the start of it, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Other passengers, customs agents, shuttle drivers and hotel clerks became part of the narrative in humorous and wonderful ways. Each of their efforts kicked over another domino and we have no idea what effect that may have had on others involved. Because the truth is no matter what we do we are impacting an untold number of people. Like dominoes cascading in an impressive display, we are sometimes part of keeping things running smoothly, and sometimes we are a hiccup causing the need for a re-set or redirection.

Someone we don’t know has the potential to change something in our life and we also have the ability to impact others in ways we never fully understand. The dominoes will not always line up in perfect formation. Life’s not like that. Perhaps it’s not the direction they fall that matter as much as who helps get them upright again.

That’s my outlook.

Does aspartame pose any real health risks?

Aspartame, a compound comprising aspartic acid and phenylalanine (two amino acids), is an artificial sweetener that’s commonly used in diet soft drinks and various sugarfree foods. Over the years, aspartame has been accused of causing all sorts of health problems, from brain tumours to allergies to multiple sclerosis.

Why the bad rap? Simply put, when aspartame is metabolized, it turns into methanol. While it’s true that methanol is a highly toxic substance, it’s only dangerous with prolonged exposure to enormous doses. Aspartame produces only a tiny amount of methanol, which is quickly eliminated by the body. Furthermore, various fruits and vegetables also produce methanol — for instance, when a cup of tomato juice is digested, it creates approximately six times more of the chemical than a cup of diet soda.

According to both

Health Canada and the World Health Organization (WHO), aspartame — which has been approved for use in more than 90 countries, including France, Canada, the United States and New Zealand — is completely harmless. The only people who should closely monitor their intake are those who have phenylketonuria, a rare disease that hinders the body’s ability to metabolize phenylalanine.

Finally, Health Canada has placed the acceptable daily intake (ADI) — the maximal quantity that a person can ingest each day without any health risks — at 40 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight. This amounts to roughly ten cans of diet soda a day for the average adult. Surveys have demonstrated that Canadians’ aspartame consumption is far below the ADI.

It’s a foregone conclusion that the best team in baseball is the Boston Red Sox, but Major League Baseball’s constitution says playoffs must be played, and the TV networks insist on October games, so nine other teams will join the Red Sox with a chance at winning the

World Series. But who will those nine teams be?

Last year, the three division winners in each league were, on average, about 12 games ahead of their nearest rival, with only one close race in MLB’s six divisions (Boston by two games over the Yankees in the A.L. East). This year?

Wow! There are tight races everywhere, and a few contenders that playoff viewers haven’t seen in a while.

While Boston is a lock in the A.L. East, and Cleveland is going to easily reclaim the A.L. Central crown, a threeteam battle is keeping fans in the A.L. West on the edges of their seats.

Astros are being chased by both surprising Oakland A’s — the hottest team in baseball in the past two months — and Seattle Mariners.

All three divisional races in the National League were tight entering September and fans in about eight cities were in for some exciting stretch-drive baseball.

Ag sector’s ability to produce

By Calvin Daniels While there are many rather dramatic changes taking place in agriculture these days, one of the more interesting, and less talked about is the increased confidence the marketplace is showing in the sector’s ability to produce.

A good example of the trend can be seen in wheat.

While wheat may have lost its crown as king of crops to canola, at least in terms of profitability in Western Canada, it remains a major food grain on a global scale.

The fact is farmers around the world produce wheat almost too well.

While the United States Department of Agriculture has global wheat down 28.4 million tonnes or 2.9 per cent this year, the modest drop off bucks a significant run of production increases. Since 2012-13 there has been a yearover-year increase in wheat production each year up until this one.

The reasons for the constant increase in wheat production are of course varied, but there are certainly some obvi-

ous influences at play including better agronomic traits being bred into new wheat varieties, and optimizing the science of farming in terms of fertilizer and crop protection products.

And wheat is a crop that is widely grown, and that too is a key to consistent world production.

We like to think of the Canadian Prairies as the bread basket to the world because we grow lots of high quality milling flour.

That of course is true, and most of that production is exported to some other country making Canada a major producer of wheat for flour.

But Canada is far from being the only producer.

It might surprise some, but China is easily the largest producer of wheat, followed by India, but they consume almost all they produce so don’t draw attention like the exporting countries. Of course if they have bad crops they become more aggressive as importers, which is significant for farmers here.

wheat producer,and as they adopt better farm technology they have the potential to boost yields.

In Europe France is the big producer, followed

by Germany, which is where dry conditions this year have reduced yield expectations accounting for the world decline.

Interestingly, Ukraine sits 10th in world production of wheat. It is another country where better farm technology could boost production significantly, a comment that could be applied to many countries. For example, Poland plants about 2.4 million hectares of wheat annually, and wheat is the largest crop grown in Kazakhstan. Both countries could boost production if they had access to the tools farmers have here.

While the opportunity to grow production exists based on technology transfer, at present the security of production lies in the diversity of the production area for wheat.

It is the ability to grow wheat from Australia to Kansas that has given the marketplace the confidence to expect production to always be there.

Congratulations to local athletes Blake Lamontagne who participated in the provincial water skiing in Saskatoon recently. He capped the event with 4 gold medals.

Congratulations also to cousins to Theoren West and Kerr Cudmore who spent 7 weeks competing in the Westman Junior Golf Tour.

Theoren finished first in the U18 and Kerr finished first in U13 divisions. Their coach was Grandpa Kelly Greenbank.

What did you see that you never saw before: At Circle of Friends we brought Keepsakes.

Jessie Thiessen had her husband’s pitch pipe. He used it to lead the singing when their church had no instruments at all. Ralph had a collection of Indian arrowheads. Alice brought a letter which her father had written at the end of the war. Mary had one her father had typed at age 15, on his first typewriter; trial and many errors. Margaret had been allowed to choose from her Grandma’s china cabinet, a tiny mustard pot with spoon.

A bizarre medical condition is sweeping through the rig. He finds, Deep Storm, an advanced research facility 2 miles beneath the ocean’s floor. Peter Crane finds that the facility conceals something more complicated than a medical mystery. Although it wasn’t my usual genre of reading and I had a bit of difficulty in understanding some of it, I really enjoyed it and appreciated the quality of writing.

The Alida community extends sincerest sympathies to the Peet families on the death of Joyce Peet who passed away in Weyburn on Aug. 20 at the age of 86 years. She was predeceased by husband Bob in 2015. Joyce is survived by her chil-

dren Brian (Margaret), Debbie (Mark) Pickard, Cindy (Mark) Beriault, John (Beverly), Kevin, and Dorothy-Jo (Stuart) Cairns, 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

rived at the Cowan farm on Aug. 21 to help with the harvest for a couple of days. He returned home to Estevan later on Wednesday as he had to prepare to go to Moose Jaw for secondary schooling.

On Aug. 25 the family of Laura Poulsen met at the Dannevirke Cemetery where they buried Laura’s ashes. Laura had passed away at the Rimbey, AB on Apr. 5, 2018 at the age of 88 years. She was predeceased by her husband Henry (1988), sons, Ralph (1993) and Irwin (2008), granddaughter Jennifer Geroge (1993) and son-in-law Armand McGillis (2010) as well as her sister Edna. Laura is survived by her children Paul (Marina), Caroline (Daniel) George and Brenda McGillis, 8 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as her brother Adrian Whiteman (95 years young). Following the interment a fellowship luncheon was held at the Alida Golden Gate Centre for family and friends.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and especially liked the concert.

The dry spell around here finally ended with a little rain, or should say shower later on on Sunday afternoon putting a stop to the harvest

(probably for a day or two if there’s not more rain). We were fortunate to get finished a field and could make the move to another field during the shower – so no lost time doing that move (ha).

Sun is shining bright this Monday morning so hopefully guys won’t be held up too long. Wishing a continued good harvesting guys and do take care out there.

Night visions and staying wide awake It may be 4:00 a.m. but there we are, wide awake! As wide awake as Katy Perry. Not unusual, since Canadians, according to Global News 2012, have “shocking” sleep habits: “…half of us have trouble getting to sleep; about a third of us aren’t getting enough sleep; of those who do sleep, only half find the sleep refreshing…”

In the way of analogy our spiritual lives find us less than wide awake and far from peace. We can find a solution to our problems in prayer.

In an interview Katy Perry said, “My mom has prayed for me my entire life, hoping I’d come back to God.” It happened while in Asia with her mom.

“I went to Mass with my mom…She hadn’t sung those songs in 40 years and watching her made me cry. It’s so beautiful and humbling to re-centre in a place where it’s not about anything else but reconnecting with the Divine.”

Perry’s song “Wide Awake” reflects some of this spiritual reawakening: “Yeah, I was in the dark I was falling hard… Yeah, I am born again Out of the

lion’s den… I am trying to hold on God knows that I tried Seeing the bright side But I’m not blind anymore I’m wide awake” You and I need a light of clarity in our dark nights. Like Daniel’s vision: “ As I watched, thrones were set in place, and the One who is Ancient of Days took his throne. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was like pure wool. His throne was fiery flames. … ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgement, and the books were opened…

As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven... to him was given dominion and glory and kingship…” (Daniel 7:9-14).

In the Transfiguration Peter, James and John saw Jesus’ clothing become white as light.

Moses and Elijah joined him, and the Father’s voice announced, “This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.

Listen to him” (Matthew 17:1-8).

A short time later, Peter denied Jesus three times after his arrest.

When you and I struggle with inner demons and

temptations that assail us, we need to remember the visions we have seen in our dark nights.

Imagine Dragons in their song “Demons” captures our vulnerability to and our helplessness against temptation: “I wanna shelter you / But with the beast inside / There’s nowhere we can hide…

Don’t wanna let you down But I am hell bound… It’s dark inside It’s where my demons hide… Your eyes, they shine so bright I wanna save that light”.

Indeed, we are lost unless we turn to the light of Christ. Jesus wants to shelter us and save that light he has planted within us through Baptism and the Spirit.

Prayer is the answer!

Trappist Monk JeanBaptiste Chautard oversaw his community’s finances. After exhausting all avenues to raise money, he went to a nearby shrine and presented his appeal to God and Mary.

As he left, a stranger hailed him, “Are you a Trappist? Can I be of assistance to you?” And the stranger’s generosity saved the monastery.

“Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:14).
