NIGHT SKIES | SEPTEMBER AN ASTRONOMY ARTICLE BY JAMES EDGAR

The Moon begins this month just two days past new, so will present a tiny sliver in the western evening twilight. On the evening of the 5th, Jupiter will be 2 degrees south of the Moon. Then Saturn and Pluto on the 8th are both involved in occultations, neither of which will be visible from the Northern Hemisphere.

The Saturn event is worth watching for, though, as the Moon and the Ringed Planet will only be separated by 0.04 degrees—a very close conjunction! The Moon is full on the 13th, meets up with Uranus on the 17th, and is near the Messier object M35 on the 22nd. On the 24th, our satellite slides through the stars of the

Beehive Cluster (M44). On September 28, the Moon is at perigee (closest in its orbit), resulting in high tides at coastal areas.

Mercury comes out from behind the Sun at midmonth and begins a long evening apparition. Better when viewed from more southerly locations, but still worth checking out at sundown.

Venus becomes the Evening Star also around mid-month, and hugging the horizon for the �irst few weeks. There’s a close conjunction of Mercury and Venus on the 13th, but very close to the Sun, so don’t try looking for them!

Mars is too close to the Sun to be seen.

Jupiter remains prominent in the southern sky after sundown. Watch for the Moon nearby on the 5th.

Saturn has been retrograding for a while and reaches its stationary point on the 18th, thereafter moving prograde (easterly). On the 8th, the Moon had

a very close encounter, as mentioned above.

Uranus rises after midnight, so a target for only the most avid of skywatchers.

Neptune is in opposition on the 10th, so rises at sundown, crossing the sky all through the night.

Equinox is on the very early morning of September 23.

The zodiacal light is visible in the east before morning twilight for the last week of the month. This phenomenon is a result of the Sun backlighting dust in the inner Solar System, aligned with the ecliptic.

Artist Colony Show & Sale

By Mary Moffat Sunday, Aug. 18 the sun came out to shine on a talented group of artists for the Moose Mountain Provincial Parks Local Artists Show & Sale held on the lawn of the Chalet.

The show featured many members of the Artist Colony in residence from the summer, as well as others local to the area. With everything from paintings on canvas and skulls, carvings in antlers, characters in Paverpol, bowls created from layers and pieces of different woods laminated and then formed on a lathe, works of art created from sugar sacks embellished with thread and beads, quilts, tiles layered with painting on top of alcohol ink creations, portraits, pottery and bronze art, there was something for everyone.

If you enjoy art and missed this event, be sure to visit the Wine and Cheese Art Retreat Artists Show and Sale at the Kenosee Lake Park Hall on Thursday, Aug. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Why Labor Day is worth celebrating Labor Day weekend is much-anticipated. Many people look forward to Labor Day weekend because it offers one last extended break to enjoy summer weather. Though summer does not of�icially end until September is nearly over, for many people Labor Day, which is celebrated annually on the �irst Monday in September, marks the unof�icial end of summer.

But Labor Day is more than just one �inal chance to embrace the relaxed vibe of summer and soak up some rays. In fact, Labor Day boasts a unique history that’s worth celebrating for a variety of reasons.

What is Labor Day? The United States Department of Labor notes that Labor Day is a celebration of American workers that dates back to the 19th century. The day is meant to commemorate the contributions workers in the United States have made to the nation, helping to make it one of

the strongest and most prosperous countries in the world.

Who came up with the idea of Labor Day? Despite the fact that municipal legislation surrounding Labor Day was initially introduced in the 1880s, debate remains as to just who should be credited with proposing a day to honor American workers. Some records suggest that Peter J. McGuire, who served as general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and cofounded the American Federation of Labor, deserves the credit for Labor Day. However, the Department of Labor notes that many people believe a machinist named Matthew Maguire (no relation to Peter) was the �irst to propose a holiday honoring workers in 1882. At that time Maguire was serving as secretary of New York’s Central Labor Union, which later adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to

plan a demonstration and picnic. The �irst Labor Day was ultimately celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in accordance with the plans made by the Central Labor Union, which strongly suggests that Maguire does, in fact, deserve the credit for coming up with the holiday.

Why celebrate Labor Day? Labor Day is worth celebrating because, without the contributions of millions of workers every year, the United States would not be the success story it is and has been for more than 200 years.

In addition to the United States, many countries across the globe, including Canada and Australia, have their own versions of Labor Day. Labor Day weekend might now be seen as the unof�icial end of summer.

But this Labor Day weekend, celebrants and workers should remember that Labor Day also should be a time to re�lect on the value of hard work.

How you can help monitor for invasive mussels Did you know that aquatic invasive species pose a serious danger to Western Canada’s lakes and waterways?

With thousands of lakes and rivers, Saskatchewan is a popular place for tourists and residents to enjoy �ishing and other recreational opportunities such as water-skiing and wakeboarding. These activities depend on a healthy aquatic ecosystem and everyone can play a part in protecting our waters.

Aquatic invasive species are plant, animal and invertebrate species not native to Saskatchewan.

They include species such as �lowering rush (plant), Prussian and Asian carp (�ish) and zebra and quagga mussels (invertebrates).

Commonly referred to as AIS, these species pose signi�icant threats to water-related infrastructure such as hydropower facilities, wastewater plants and irrigation systems. They can also have a signi�icant impact on �isheries, aquatic habitat, recreational activities, tourism and property values.

This is done by sampling the bottom of waterbodies, inspecting shoreline, and checking when removing docks, buoys and anchors, which provides information on the presence or absence of AIS. The reporting form is an easy-to-use tool that the general public, nongovernment agencies NGOs) and other agencies can use to record their monitoring efforts in Saskatchewan waterbodies.

Surveys can be downloaded to your phone or mobile device, or completed in your browser if you are using a connected desktop computer or laptop. Simply �ill it out and submit it.

AIS can be impossible to eliminate if they become established in a waterbody, and can cost millions of dollars annually to manage.

For cottage owners, invasive mussels can cause serious issues by coating the lake bottom, attaching themselves to docks and water-related equipment. When they die, they also wash up on the beach in the thousands, creating unsightly mounds of tiny shells.

That is why the Government of Saskatchewan needs your help to prevent the spread of AIS. The Adult Invasive Mussel Monitoring (AIMM) Program is one way anyone can assist.

AIMM is a partnership project to monitor waterbodies throughout Saskatchewan for aquatic invasive species and adult invasive mussels.

Coordinated by the province, this monitoring program is a valuable tool for early detection of adult invasive mussels and other aquatic invasive species in waterbodies throughout Saskatchewan.

The group “Boom Town” entertains visitors to the Red Barn. There is only one more weekend left to enjoy the entertainment, as the summer winds down.
