The temperatures may have been cool, but Carlyle Lions members were serving up a hot pancake breakfast to the earlybirds at Carlyle Fun Dayz. From 8 to 10 a.m. they flipped pancakes and served up sausages and coffee in front of the Memorial Hall, as the crowds gathered for the 11 a.m. parade.

Inside the Hall the Carlyle Dicken’s Festival committee had a tradeshow organized to raise some funds for their events, allowing local

home-based business owners the opportunity to share their products and customers to do some shopping.

Home Hardware had a Raptor dinosaur for the kids to visit, and the Kids Zone featured Skye and Chase from Paw Patrol, bumper cars, bouncers, balloon animals, face painting and a petting zoo.

There was a dunk tank with all proceeds going to support the Crescent Point Leisure Complex (pool), a fashion show, food trucks, a quilt show and High

Tea at the Rusty Relics Museum and not one, but four bands playing throughout the day and evening.

The Milkman’s Sons started the day off, followed by the Hurricane Pilots. Later in the day the Bromantics had folks hopping and a bopping’ and bless my soul!

They out-bopped the buzzards and the oriole.

Big Bad Storm played into the night despite the fall-like temperatures, while the Carlyle Rink Board ran the beer gardens and held another Barnyard Bingo as their fundraiser.Thanks to Andrea MacEwen and her rooster, Stegosaurus, who seems able to do his business almost on command, much to the delight of this year’s winner, Lorri Matthewson.

Betty Jack wanted to help out the Carlyle Playschool in their efforts to fund a permanent home so she set up a raffle table and was able to donate $310 to the group’s fundraising.

All in all, it was a hugely successful, funfilled day and kudos go to all the volunteers who put in countless hours planning, organizing, setting up and tearing down. You rock and we as a community, are very lucky to have you.

Moe, Goodale fight petty pre-election politics

By Murray Mandryk Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is right to suggest the federal government and long-time Liberal MP Ralph Goodale may be playing election politics with the infrastructure money.

Unfortunately, that may be all Moe and the Saskatchewan Party are right about.

What they are most wrong about is to somehow imply the age-old practice of ward-healing in advance of the an election vote is something that was evented by the Liberals.

New Democrat. Conservative. Liberal. And, yes, even Moe’s Sask. Party government are guilty of this.

The latest in this summer saga between Ottawa and the province over millions in federal infrastructure dollars now comes down to petty political bickering over the funding of two pools in Regina.

Earlier, Moe and his Sask. Party government threatened to withhold its approval of federal funding over cultural and sports projects, the Gordie Howe Bowl and the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan festival in Saskatoon and the Globe Theatre in Regina.

What was at issue, at least according to the Sask.

Party government, was that $300 million of available federal infrastructure funds were specifically designated for transit projects.

One gets that in less urbanized Saskatchewan, money for city buses may be less of a need or a priority.

But such disagreements are normally resolved behind closed-door discussions between the two levels of government. That Moe and the Sask. Party immediately elevated this to a public fight on social media with accusations spiced with heavy political overtones suggests something much more was in play.

What that “something” is pre-election politics, something that both Moe is as guilty of playing as much (or perhaps even more) than Goodale.

Just as the fight over the three projects seemed to be resolved through the Sask. Party government’s recent approval, Moe levelled political accusations why the federal government was focussing on funding two outdoor swimming pools in Goodale’s Regina-Wascana riding.

“This is an infrastructure fund that is put forward to ensure that we can move forward on provincial priorities,” Moe said last week.

“This is not Ralph Goodale’s re-election fund.”

This quickly drew the ire of the normally unflappable Goodale who accused Moe of “trying very hard to be unpleasant.”

The Regina-Wascana MP noted that the support for the repair of the inner city pools mostly serving low-income kids was requested by the city and no one will mistake Regina Mayor Michael Fougere for a Liberal partisan.

“The provincial government has said that those kids are a lesser priority than a landfill or a garage dump somewhere else,” Goodale said.

Moreover, while Moe said he found it odd that a pool in Goodale’s ridging would be “singled out of 400 applications”, Goodale countered that 21 of the 25 projects Moe’s government submitted for funding happened to be Saskatchewan Party ridings.

“So what do you read in that?” Goodale asked.

“Surely that’s not partisan.”

Of the 25 projects, 13 have already been approved by Ottawa.

So, while Moe may be right that there may be some level of pre-election politics in play, he isn’t exactly providing the whole picture.

That whole picture includes the fact that support that other projects are being funded and that, while the pools may be in Goodale riding, funding for these necessary projects is a legitimate request supported by the city.

Second, you would be hard-pressed to ever find a letter from your government MP or MLA that doesn’t highlight the tax dollars spent in your riding on your behalf.

By Moe’s own assertion, this, too, should be considered taxpayers funding re-elections.

It’s also hard to ignore that two Moe’s own caucus members are now running as federal Conservative candidates against the Liberals.

There’s pre-election politics here, a lot of politics.

But as much of it is coming from Moe as it coming is from Goodale.

Telling a tale in time I love storytelling techniques that use unconventional methods to weave a tale, like revealing content backwards or unfolding a story from different time periods concurrently.

Fans awaiting season four of NBC’s ‘This Is Us’ watch multiple actors tell the story of a family over different time periods My Outlook simultaneously. It gives a sense Shelley Luedtke of how experiences and interactions in the past shape the characters later in life.

Another that can be highly effective is ‘in media res’ which in Latin means “into the middle of things.” It describes a narrative that launches, not at the beginning of a story, but somewhere in the middle, at a pivotal point in the action. Some find it annoying but to me it is such an interesting way for a story to unfold. I am actually far more intrigued by a book, movie or show that starts at the middle or the end and then subsequently reveals how the action built to that point.

One of the biggest franchises in movie history started its storyline in the middle. Director George Lucas had an extensive narrative in mind when he first pitched a new concept, but since he honestly didn’t hold out much hope there’d be an appetite for his space odyssey storyline, he started with the height of the action. Following the resounding success of Star Wars he was able to expand the series and tell it in non-chronologically.

So the feature films started with episodes 4, 5 and 6, followed by 1, 2 and 3. Clearly it was a good decision given the expanse of the franchise. He took audiences into the height of the action and then later filled in the blanks and provided the backstory. He got fans invested in the characters and the battle before telling us how they got there.

der how the details might change since it is often in our retrospection that much is learned, putting into perspective the people and events that are part of our experience. Our lives move chronologically to be sure, but telling our story is not just linear; it is far more circular than that. Events as they happen may fall on a particular timeline, but in terms of how we share them with others it often takes a far more circuitous route, particularly as new people enter our lives or we become more comfortable with those who have known us for a while.

Our backstory is important, not to dwell in, but to learn from, and we might be a bit better off if we were willing to take the time and listen to others as they fill in some details. Regrettably, impatience all too often causes us to miss out. We rush relationships without taking the time to fill in some of the blanks, not because we want anyone to be defined by their past, but because that backstory, for better or for worse, helps to provide context for what we do today and what might transpire tomorrow.

Every individual has a backstory. We may know some of it, much more we will not. As friendships and relationships deepen we hopefully feel welcomed to the idea of adding snippets, filling in more of the blanks and becoming more real with each other as we allow people to find out more about who we are.

We may come into someone’s life in media res and in the midst of the action, whether it be dramatic, comedic or tragic; or at a time when the backstory is a bit more prominent. The great thing about the way the storytelling takes place with one another is that we have the opportunity to get to know people, share in their lives, and help shape how the episodes are going to unfold.

That’s my outlook.

Top tips for dealing with jealous dogs

Does your dog growl when another dog or person walks by? Or perhaps your pooch insistently tries to get your attention when you’re doing something else? If so, your pup may be exhibiting signs of jealousy. Here are some tips for dealing with a jealous dog.

• Ignore unwanted behaviour. Don’t react when your dog barks, growls, paws at you or otherwise shows signs of jealousy. If they exhibit this behaviour while sitting on or near you, calmly remove them

from the immediate area.

• Reward good behaviour. Reward your dog with treats and attention only when they’re calm and relaxed. This will reinforce the idea that this is how you want them to behave.

• Review training exercises. If obedience classes are a distant memory, practise basic directions like sit, stay and come. This will reinforce your role as alpha, and you can use these commands when your dog is displaying unacceptable behaviour.

• Include newcomers in activities. If your dog’s behaviour springs from a new person entering their life, make sure that your pooch becomes acclimatized to the newcomer’s presence.

Bring a new baby on walks or have your new partner practise commands with your pup. This will help your dog understand that the unfamiliar person is now part of their pack.

If your dog becomes aggressive or their behaviour is affecting their health or safety, be sure to enlist the help of a professional dog trainer.

An individual in one moving vehicle threw a golf ball at another moving vehicle. Unfortunately we were unable to locate the suspect vehicle. Keep the golf balls on the golf course folks.

• So you are not happy with the Police. That happens. Sometimes, well, we are human, we make mistakes, or we realize we could have handled things differently. If you have a concern let us try and resolve it. If you don’t like the manner in which we respond there is the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP. 1-800-665-6878. Trust me, we want to learn and develop to provide a better service to the communities. I am more than willing to admit we are not perfect. Social Media unfortunately is not the route to go. The “Keyboard Warriors” and those that hide behind anonymity are not benefiting society. Saying they are scared of the Police or that we will harass them is also a fallacy. First and foremost we don’t have time. If you continue to break the law or fail to comply with the rules and regulations you have to expect we will deal with you.

• An assault occurred at a liquor establishment.

The victim was satisfied with the accused getting a liquor ticket, rather than an assault charge. They were friends, then the assault and may be friends again by the time you are reading this.

• A domestic assault resulted in the accused being arrested for the assault. Unfortunately, the victim was also arrested for impaired driving within the same short period. Samples of 140 and 150 mg% were obtained.

• A Member was assisting Carnduff Detachment when a driver was located shortly before 11 AM.

Weekly RCMP report Samples of 280 mg% were obtained. This driver was to only drive a vehicle with a blow box, however, chose to drive another vehicle. They are also facing charges of driving while prohibited and remain in gaol due to their driving record.

• A further impaired was dealt with where the driver had samples of 100/90 mg%. Don’t let the breath samples fool you. All impaired drivers are dangerous and regardless of your opinion I can state so from experience.

• Members were dispatched to a side by side with a possible impaired driver. The driver was not impaired and received a warning for no helmet.

• Another ATV was sought after for impaired driving, however, patrols were unsuccessful.

• Another domestic incident resulted in the accused causing damage to property with their fist. No assault, however, charges for Mischief were warranted.

• Someone had too much to drink and chose to take a nap . . . on the road. Previous to the arrival of the RCMP another individual took responsibility for this individual. Napping is healthy, napping on the road, not so much.

• If you drive a semi, don’t drive it within the community of Wawota. They have a bylaw preventing this and it kind of irritating that some people think the law does not apply to them.

• A complainant found cannabis in a room at a family member’s residence. It appears to be legally purchased, however, the individual suspected of having it is on release conditions not to possess it.

Unfortunately we do not have enough to lay charges.

• An individual called to acquire our assistance in getting their vehicle from their significant others parent’s property. The significant others parents are not happy with this. It appears the matter is civil and did not require the assistance of the RCMP. • We have been getting complaints of suspicious vehicles or individuals because people look different or act different. We live in a great country and immigrants make our country stronger and a better place to live. Fortunately, those that were deemed suspicious have been very cooperative with our Members and our interactions with them were very positive.

Now if you fear for the safety of your children, and your children are with you, the chances are your children are safe, unless you find that you don’t trust yourself???

• Members responded to a complaint of one individual threatening to kill another individual. We are now awaiting “The other side of the story” before we proceed with charges.

An 18-foot car trailer was stolen from the Arcola area. It has checkered plate fenders and a roll of geo tech fabric on the trailer bed. Please call us if you have any information.

• A renter failed to take care of their kitten. As much as we want to deal with the renter for not taking care of the kitten we also want them for numerous warrants. Some people that can not care for

themselves should not be allowed to try and care for animals. The kitten was brought to a good home and is doing well. The individual was later located and arrested and released on their warrants. They did not ask about the kitten. tsk, tsk.

• We patrolled for several erratic drivers and possible impaired drivers without the success we would like. That said the hunt is part of the job.

• Buyer beware. If you order on line and don’t get what you expect, or don’t get anything at all. It is likely a civil matter. Your credit company may help you, but if it is outside of Canada there is likely nothing we could do even if we wanted to.

• If you are travelling down a roadway and a vehicle pulls over to the side in front of you for no apparent reason don’t pass this vehicle until you look in your rear view mirror. This was the mistake one driver made as two Members were responding to a collision. As a Member tried to pass the front vehicle that pulled over the subsequent vehicle chose to “safely pass” and pull slightly into the oncoming lane. One can imagine the shock this caused to the Police Officer with emergency equipment activated that was in that lane trying to pass both vehicles.

Being the seriousness of the collision was no longer that which required the immediate attendance of both Police Officers, this vehicle was pulled over and provided a ticket.

• We continue to get calls of cattle on the highway. On one occasion it appeared as though they found their way back through the fence, on another the owner corralled the cattle and on another it appears they went “Tacticow” and hid in the tree’s and high grass on the Members.

• Approximately 25 tickets and 30 warnings were provided over the last week.

• Tickets were issued for cannabis in a vehicle - $360, liquor in a vehicle - $360, intoxicated in Public - $200, drive with undue care and attention - $280, cell phone $280, fail to produce drivers licence - $100, no insurance - $580, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, fail to wear approved helmet and eye wear on an ATV - $100, use licence plate on wrong vehicle - $175, fail to move to the right while approached by an emergency vehicle - $125, travelling over 60 km/hr while passing a stopped emergency vehicle - $224, and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $865. This high flyer was also charged for operating a motor vehicle while suspended and the vehicle was seized for 30 days.

• Warnings were issued for stop sign, seatbelt, fail to produce drivers licence, fail to wear approved helmet and eye wear on an ATV, operate a motor vehicle on a highway with a learners licence, fail to produce registration, fail to display licence plate, insecure load, drive with undue care and attention, and speeding.

• Inspection notices were issued for inadequate headlights, inadequate brake lights, produce drivers licence and window tint.

Myrna then gave thanks to the Parents, Members and the Leaders for their commitment to making the 4-H

year as great as it was.

She thanked the people who have given our Club – grants in the past year and others.

The Executive and the Members were presented with gifts of appreciation.

Certificates were also presented to Eli Bartell for five years as a member, and Megan Turton for being a Leader for five years.

Certificates were received by Teanna Hubbard and Rayah Lovell for completing their first year, and Sharon Hubbard and Larry Babbings for completing their first 4-H year, as Leaders.

Door prizes were handed out, and everyone enjoyed lunch.

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

Margaret Peet left Aug. 13 for Moose Jaw where she met up with daughter Jolene Hoffman and boys Collin and Cole. She then spent a few days at Regina Beach with the boys while their mother participated in the barrelracing event in Moose Jaw. They then returned to Moose Jaw where the Hoffmans returned home to Viking, AB and Margaret went to Regina and visited with her mother Claire and sister Pauline before she returned home on the 17th.

Lacie Nilsen (Estevan) visited with her parent Shelly and Tim Cowan and Ainsley on Aug. 14 for a few hours and enjoyed some time spent at the swimming pool with Ainsley, slept over and headed back to work in the morning.

On Aug. 14 Faye Walker left for Saskatoon where she had a dental appointment and spent a few days visiting with her family, Deidra, Jeff Nickel and granddaughters Olivia, Abby, Claire and Piper before heading for home on the 17th.

Spending the past week (August 11-17) holidaying with their grandparents Pierre and Brenda Boutin at the farm were Jenson and Sage Howes and while here they participated in swimming lessons.

They returned to Regina on Aug. 17.

Lori Hull visited with her daughter Samantha and Chad Peet and grandsons Hudson, Lincoln and Jaxon during Aug. 12 week. On the weekend Hudson and Lincoln returned to Preeceville with their Grandma Lori to spend a couple of days holidaying with other cousins.

Spending a holiday with her Grandma Gail McLachlin was Thea McKenna (Calgary). While here Thea also enjoyed her time at the swimming pool with Grandma.

Jeff Cowan stopped at the Cowan farm on Sunday, Aug. 18 for a quick visited with his parents Gray and Edel, also with his brother, Tim, Shelly and Ainsley, as well as with friends in the area before heading back to Carlyle.

The last set of swimming lessons has now been held at the pool for this season – boy time surely does fly by. The attendance at the pool has definitely declined, even if the weather is nice; guess too much other stuff to do now. There are only a couple of weeks of holidays left so enjoy these last few days.

Harvest is starting to be in full swing now too – peas,

beans have probably been harvested, canola is being swathed, or has been completed and lots of desiccating of the fields is also being done now. This will really seem to make the time go flying by more quickly as the men continue on preparing crops for harvest.

It will be Go – Go – Go Time so please be careful out in the fields this fall. It’s still very dry out there so beware of fire – make sure to carry a fire extinguisher with you at all times, never know if it will be needed. Always better to be safe than sorry. Also a good thing to take a break from the machinery – even if it’s just a walk around it and then back into it, always helps to break things up. Good luck with the harvest folks.

Sympathy to the family of Phil Linder, Patricia, Darlene Pryce, Dwayne and Jackie Oliver and their families. Phil passed away on Aug. 17 at the age of 84 years. His funeral was held at the Wawota Town Hall on Aug. 13.

Visiting with Shirley Corkish over the long weekend were Jeff and Laura Corkish, Owen, Addie and Mason from Cottage grove, Minn.

Congratulations to Tom and Irene Dorrance on celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Aug. 7 (actual date is Aug. 18). Sympathy to the family and friends of the late Robert Eisler who passed away at Deer View Lodge on Aug. 10. He was 85 years old. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Tyren Dorrance of Alameda, (son of Trent and Janelle,grandson of Tom and Irene) was named MVP and awarded the batting title in the Sask. Premier Baseball League. Tyren played with the SE Per-

formance Pump Midget AAA Twins. Next season he will be playing with the Taft Community College Cougars in Taft, CA. The descendants of Charles and Prudence Brehaut gathered at Ghost Creek Acres on the weekend of Aug. 9, 10 and 11. Approximately 60 people signed the guest book.There were representatives from all of the families, Dentons, Arts, Lorraines, Bob, Bud and Averys. A roast pig supper was enjoyed and lots of visiting and picture taking. The family were appreciative of all of the hard work that Hal Brehaut and Wendy put in to making this family reunion happen.

Wayne and Jean Brehaut of Athabasca, AB spent five days in Wawota. They visited with the Olsons, Brehauts, Mowbrays, Leechs and the Lamoureauxs and attended the Brehaut reunion.

Overcoming the obstacle

By Linda Wegner If you’re like me (and everybody else), you either have, are or will face obstacles that can seem overwhelming. This week I was so blessed to both read and hear encouraging words of Scripture pertaining to that very subject.

First, the familiar story of David and Goliath took on an entirely new slant for me. Each evening I listen to Bible teacher, Chuck Swindoll, on the radio; his perspective on Goliath was, I assure you, something I’ve never heard before. He presented information from Bible scholars indicating that Goliath may have suffered from a disease that causes the pituitary gland to produce excessive amounts of growth hormones; known as acromegaly (gigantism), it can also result in double vision (Google Goliath + diseases). sudden David’s challenge took on an entirely different perspective.

Then, I’ve been reading in the Bible about Joshua instructing the people to march around the walls of Jericho. For seven days they were to march behind the musicians but were not to utter a word.

On the seventh day, at the leader’s command, they were to smash their lanterns and shout to the Lord.

At that moment, the walls came tumbling down.

What was the lesson for me in this? Wait until the right moment before taking action. Too often I have tried to do God’s work for Him when He just wants me to wait until He gives the “go ahead”. You ever did that, too?

As I said in the introduction to this piece, everyone of us faces giants, or walls or multiple sources of fear and frustration. If that’s you, now, I hope and pray that reminds us all: God is for us in every circumstance. Let’s learn to trust Him!

inSTEM brings EYES camp to White Bear students

Indigenous Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (inSTEM) provided a grant to the EYES (Educating Youth in Engineering & Science) program to six indigenous reserves in Saskatchewan this summer and White Bear First Nation was one of those.

The EYES camp was held at the Post Secondary building on the White Bear First Nation from August 12 – 16 and over 36 children from grades 1 to 10 attended.

The children were exposed to engineering, chemistry, biology and physics throughout the week. They took part in the designing of a Haz Mat (hazardous materials) suit; building Ozobots and creating mazes for them to travel through; colour changing chemical reactions; pyro-technology and virtual reality. During the Virtual Reality

segment, they explored volcanos, went under the sea to check out sharks, looked at space, toured African communities and watched safari animals. They were given the opportunity to dissect Leopard Frogs, where they learned that a frog has three chambers in its heart and that a frog literally cannot swallow without closing its eyes. It must retract the eyeballs in order to create enough room to swallow its food. They found abdomens full of eggs, stomachs with bugs still inside and so many more things to excite their minds. During the Chemistry part of the camp, half empty pop bottles became rockets that shot high into the air when butane was added to them, and they were turned over after removing the lids. Dish soap in water became bubbles infused with butane that burst into flames as the children looked on in

amazement. The grand finale was executed by Tom Duffy and Kevina Mullock as they turned into fire breathing humans. 16-year-old Zacairah Shepherd said that attending EYES camp has opened her up to so many new possibilities to explore before making a decision on what her future holds for her education. MacKenzie Chittenden is one of the 5 University of Regina Students who worked at the camp this summer.

She is in her third year of five at the University of Regina. MacKenzie was actually working on a science actuarial degree but since working in the EYES Camps has decided she wants to teach science and math in secondary schools, so she is pursuing both degrees.

Her co-worker, Kevina Mullock, is pursuing her masters in Microbiology and Psychology with a goal to become a scientist working on climate change solutions.

Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party is a unique experience

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net If the hot days of July turning into the cooler evenings of August get you down, Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party is sure to warm the cockles of the coldest heart. It is not the toe-tapping music of the banjo, nor the wail of the bagpipes, not the fiddles or the cello, not the voices raised in song, nor ukuleles either, that cause you to forget the chill in the air.

I believe that the thing that really warms you up at KLKP is the feeling of being enveloped into the midst of a huge family, where everyone is overjoyed at having the opportunity to spend time with the people that encourage them to try anything and celebrate the results.

KLKP is home a unique tribe, welcoming everyone to listen to their music, tap your toes along with the beat,

get up and dance to the reels, take part in some good old fashioned square dancing, or sit around the campfire and roast some wieners or s’mores while musicians jam anywhere they find themselves.

Michelle Amy and her husband Will Elliot have very obviously dedicated hundreds upon thousands of hours to planning and executing the minutiae of details required to birth an event of this scope. With an age range from 1 – 90, a wide variety of instruments and instructors from all over the world, one might expect to find some discord, however, with a focus on a co-operative, nurturing atmosphere, where everyone is valued and included, how can you help but find excellence.

With fiddle instructors like the Juno Award winning Karrnnel Sawitsky (ON); Adam Sutherland (Scotland); Daniel Gervais (AB); Shane

Cook (ON); Donna Turk (SK); Patti Kusturok (MB); Stacey Read(NB); Andrea Beaton (Cape Breton); Daniel Koulack (MB); Stephanie Labbe (Quebec); and Kim de Laforest of SK, the quality of instruction is stellar. Kuzina’s Resto & Grill celebrates 1st anniversary

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net Carlyle’s Fun Dayz 2018 marked the opening day of Kuzina’s Resto & Grill, and in appreciation of the support they have received in their first year of business, the restaurant gave customers the chance to win a 55 Inch Smart Tv, a dehumidifier, a vacuum Cceaner or one of 10 - $25 gift certificates in the draw held Sunday, August 18 just after lunch.

The grand Prize winner was Kim Hawkins, while Justin Ignatescu won the dehumidifier and Dorothy Bakusko, the vacuum.

Congratulations to Kuzina’s on their first year in business and to the lucky draw winners.

Pause for Reflection

The Sacred Heart and God’s metaphor “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock” ( Matthew 7:24). And Jesus expands the metaphor. He gives us Peter – “And upon this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18).

Jesus described those who hear his words and follow them. The floods shall never destroy that house! God has forever longed for our hearts to follow his.

In the 1300’s God revealed his continued invitation to us through the inspired writings of Catherine of Sienna, a great saint and mystic.

In The Dialogue God the Father describes the ways of the world as a raging torrent, and His Son Jesus as the bridge on which we must climb if we

wish to avoid destruction. By using this bridge we can safely cross from one shore, earthly life, to the other shore, eternal life.

Do not be deceived by the devil. Many are swept along by the waters of perdition, holding on to the illusion of being on firm ground. Pleasures, things of this world, even people sweep us downstream because this world is exciting.

In the 1600’s God again intervened through St Margaret Mary Alacoque. He complained to her that “hearts had grown cold,” and, as a remedy, He revealed to her His burning heart.

He spoke to her of His great desire to be loved by mankind and of diverting souls from the path of ruin into which Satan hurls entire crowds. It was this wish which led Him to reveal His Heart, with all its

“Patience, extra attentiveness and situational knowledge go a long way toward keeping our roads safe for everyone,” said Gareth Jones, president of the Canada Safety Council.

“It’s our responsibility as conscientious road users to make sure that nobody is unnecessarily put in harm’s way.”

School Bus Safety Tips Especially in the context of young children, it’s not always easy to predict their behaviours. A child who is running to catch

their bus may dart out in traffic unexpectedly, which makes defensive driving absolutely crucial. Drive at an appropriate speed, be aware of the child’s presence and be prepared to stop suddenly.

The same holds true for school buses themselves. It is against the law to pass a school bus when its red signal lights are flashing. This is true regardless of the direction in which you are coming, although exception is made for oncoming traffic on a median-divided highway. If you notice a school bus approaching, do a quick scan of the area to see if there are any children waiting nearby, and be prepared to stop if the bus’ signal lights come on. A school bus is also required to stop at all railway crossings, so be

on the lookout for these and prepare accordingly.

Other Modes of Transportation Transportation of children by school bus is one of the most effective and safest methods of travel, but many students take an alternate mode of transit.

Whether they’re arriving to school by bicycle, by foot, by public transportation or by being driven in a family vehicle, patience and vigilance continue to be essential.

Be mindful of the potential for an increased presence of vulnerable road users, especially at crosswalks, on the roadways and in school zones. By being aware of your surroundings, you allow yourself the necessary time to react if they behave unpredictably.

Father Stefano Penna asks us to imagine that Sacred Heart pumping the precious blood out to the distant capillaries. The systolic action sends out the blood to nourish us. This is the blood shed for our sins, the blood that washes us white as snow.

The diastolic action of the Sacred Heart contracting, draws us, a sluggish waste, back through the veins to be cleansed and refreshed, once again to be sent out refreshed and re-oxygenated. As we go forth from our encounter with Christ’s love we are literally and figuratively “pumped”.

October 18, 1932 – August 8, 2019 A Celebration of Life will be held for Dingi at the Kennedy Rodeo Grounds on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 4:00 p.m. Margaret Berglund better known as Dingi was born in Toronto, ON. on Oct 18 1932. She was adopted by Willie and Tory Warner as a very young infant and came to live in the Belleville district by Kennedy, SK. She was predeceased by her husband George Berglund, parents Willie & Tory Warner, sister Joyce Muir, Brother and sisters in-law Sinc & Irene Berglund, Bill Berglund, Mary & Pete Litowski, Irene Berglund, Jean Berglund, Shorty & Mary Berglund, Doris & Larry O’Neil, Elaine & Eldon Jones. She will be missed by Daughter Sandi Tarr, Son in law Earnie Tarr, grandchildren Dayna Coffey(Allan), Brandon Tarr, Kelsi Tarr(Rafael Lauzier), Jacey Tarr(Andrew Hengen) great - granddaughters Ashlyn, Aliyah and So�ia. Brother-in-law Tommy Muir, Sister-in-law Mildred Berglund, numerous nieces & nephews and her dog Suzy. Dingi attended school at Belleville country school until Grade 10 then she went to Kennedy to complete high school.

After high school she took nurses training in Regina but only stayed until she got her cap. Nursing wasn’t for her so she then went to Teachers college in Moose Jaw. Dingi taught school in numerous country school, Brookside, Saffordea, Belleville and high school in Langbank and Kennedy. She married George Berglund in 1957.

Daughter Sandi was born in 1964. George & Dingi raised ponies & horses right from the beginning. Dingi was a self professed ‘horse nut’ from a very early age. In 1966 they were among the �irst PMU producers in western Canada. Dingi gave up teaching to become a full time rancher. As Sandi grew up, Dingi & Sandi competed at numerous horse shows. Dingi started the Kennedy Light Horse 4-H club and taught 4-H for 16 yrs. Dingi started competing in endurance rides in 1972 and was fortunate enough to place in 3 provinces, she loved Rodeo and was an avid goat tier and barrel racer for many years. Barrel racing into her 60’s. She was honored with a lifetime membership from the Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo Assoc., the Canadian Cowboys Assoc. gave her a gold card and she was chosen as CCA Cowgirl of the year in 2009. Until recent years she was a very active member of the Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo association. Sandi and husband Earnie had 4 children; Dayna, Brandon, Kelsi and Jacey. Growing up in the same yard and working in the PMU barn together they spent a lot of time with their grandparents. Dingi was known to never miss a birthday, a sporting or school event and of course she attended all of their horse shows. In the last 5 years three great-granddaughters also arrived. Dingi loved spending time with her lively little great-granddaughters. Before George’s health declined they travelled quite a bit, visiting Australia, Europe, Scotland, took a couple of Caribbean cruises and had some winter trips to Texas. After George’s death even after major back surgery and having Parkinson’s, Dingi was determined to stay on the farm. She lived in her house right up to January of this year then had the misfortune of breaking a hip and had to move to Kipling Care home for a bit then spent the last few months in Deer View Lodge in Wawota where she broke the second hip. Dingi quietly passed away on Aug 8 2019.

As someone said hers was a life well lived. Thank you to the care workers in both Deer View Lodge, Wawota and at Kipling Care home & hospital for looking after Dingi these last few months. We appreciate that you go above and beyond caring for your residents. 1914 - 2019

Dorothy Mitchell passed away on July 29, 2019 at Sunset Haven in Carnduff at the age of 105 years.

Dorothy (Taylor) Mitchell was the daughter of pioneer parents, in the Thunder Creek area, which is north east of Carnduff, SK. Dorothy was the 5th member of a family of nine, with four brothers and four sisters. During the 1930’s, Dorothy remained on the family farm in order to assist her mother, who was in failing health.

In 1944, Dorothy attended Teachers College in Regina and Moose Jaw; later attending summer school at the University in Saskatoon. She taught in country schools for the next 10 years; the �irst year in Hope School, and the next nine years at Thunder Creek School.

In July 1954, Dorothy married Sam Mitchell of the south Oxbow district. They lived on the family farm for 48 years., followed by one year in an Oxbow unit and then moving to Sunset Haven in Carnduff.

They had one son, Harry Andrew (born in 1958), and later added twin foster sons, Dwight and Duane Fitzpatrick at 6 years of age to their family.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband – Sam, son Harry, parents Harry and Mary Taylor, 7 siblings – Herbert Taylor, Florence Farr, Isabel Reid, Irene Smith, Frank Taylor, Edna (Dill) Wagner and William Taylor.

She is survived by Dwight and Duane Fitzpatrick, brother, Ernie Taylor, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Artist Colony Show & Sale

Sunday, Aug. 18 the sun came out to shine on a talented group of artists for the Moose Mountain Provincial Parks Local Artists Show & Sale held on the lawn of the Chalet.

Accomplishments through selective breeding

By Calvin Daniels When it comes to genetics a lot can be accomplished through selective breeding and a knowledge of what is trying to be accomplished.

You need to look no further than the significant differences among breeds of fancy pigeons, cats and dogs, to see what can be accomplished, albeit the process is not necessarily a quick one.

So it wasn’t exactly a surprise when I read about the possibility of breeding cattle to produce less methane.

According to a recent article in the Western Producer, scientists at the University of Adelaide in Australia, in collaboration with universities in

Europe, Israel and the United States, have conducted research that has shown it is possible to breed cattle to reduce their methane emissions.

The genetic makeup of an individual cow significantly controls the level and type of methane-producing microbes in its rumen.

One has to applaud the approach as being one that addresses a source of greenhouse emissions in a reasonable fashion.

But, we also shouldn’t be pointing to accusing a finger at cattle as the problem when it comes to greenhouse gases.

When European settlers arrived in North America there were massive herds of bison roaming the Prairies, the herds numbering an estimated at 30-60 million in the late 18th century, depending on the source, and of course no one was taking head counts. But, around the world there were once far more wild ruminants producing methane than there are today.

Domestic cattle herds have taken over as wild populations of bison, wildebeest and other wild ruminants around the world declined in numbers.

That is not to suggest we shouldn’t look to ways of reducing the methane domestic cattle produce, and the two most logical approaches would be to find genetic lines which naturally produce less of the gas, and to work on feed formulations which would reduce less gas when consumed.

Certainly greenhouse gas emissions from every source need to be looked at.

While there are those who see climate change

as no more than a horror story being told to keep people focused on it rather than other ills of the world, and others who suggest the changes are just the natural processes of the planet at work, it seems folly not to work on limiting the human dynamic of the equation.

There might be an added cost to raising cattle which produce less methane gas, but there is also value in slowing climate change that could turn currently arable land into unproductive areas which in terms of feeding a still growing world population is not a good thing.

Looking to find The Way to Peace

An Oxbow author’s first book is her effort to bring peace to others.

released The Way to Peace, which is her reflections on how people can gain peace within themselves, and parlay it to the larger world. It’s been available for about a month,

although Sinclair has only been promoting it since late July, because she was waiting for the e-book to be available before announcing the release.

Sinclair had already started working on another book when she had the idea to write The Way to Peace.

“I wrote this book while I was in a meditative state. I actually had to reread it to even known what I had written down, because half the time I would just write with my eyes closed, with the words that were given to me,” said Sinclair.

The Way to Peace represents her writings from July to October of last year.

“I would sit down and write for a couple of minutes at a time, write just whatever was given to me. And then I’d put it away. And then I would go back and do it again, write the next day, maybe, however long later, and I would do the same thing.”

She didn’t go back and reread what she had written; rather she started with what she was given that day.

When it was finished, she didn’t know exactly was on the pages.

“When I read it, it was pretty amazing. It tells you how to create inner peace. When you create that inner peace, it creates healing inside of you and your community.”

If enough people read the book, and carry out the practice of peace found inside, Sinclair believes it could bring more peace to the world.

Once she started on the book, she found that the material flowed.

Sinclair noted she had her husband read The Way to Peace, and once he finished reading it, the book completely changed him and brought that deep inner peace inside of him as well.

“I think everyone who reads it gets something completely different from it. They get whatever it is they need to get from it.”

But the central message that she hopes people get out of it is that they can fulfill their passion.

“The purpose of this book is to spread peace in the world, improve people’s lives, to improve our communities and relationships and ultimately the world,” he said.

Other people who have read The Way to Peace have found the book to be great as well.

“Some people believe that they’re really alone, and that this God would never want to hear from me. But that’s not true. Everyone, every person on the planet, can communicate with God.” Plans for that initial book plan have been shelved. Rather, she expects she will use that subject for teaching people.

In the meantime, she has an idea for the next book she is going to do. It would help

people face such issues as fear and love.

“I believe that our free will that we have is really only a choice between fear and love,” said Sinclair. “When we’re living in fear, we’re really stuck, and we’re just stuck in unhappiness and suffering. When we’re living in love, we are really brave.”

The paper copy of The Way to Peace isn’t available outside of Amazon Worldwide at this time. Sinclair has ordered some copies, and they will be coming to her in the next little while, but as of yet, it’s not available locally.
