Carlyle event lives up to its name

Carlyle’s Fun Dayz will be held on Saturday, August 17 on Main Street and promises to be a fun-filled day and evening for all ages.

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury An event that has quickly grown into a popular attraction in the southeast region will soon be returning to Carlyle.

Carlyle Fun Dayz will take place in the downtown area on Aug. 17. It will start with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Carlyle Memorial Hall.

Activities are slated to happen throughout the day. A market is set for the Carlyle Memorial Hall at 9:30 a.m. A parade will make its way down Main Street at 11 a.m. A family fun zone will start at noon, with bumper cars and other attractions.

Also starting at noon will be karaoke and a fashion show at the Spectrum Main Stage, a show and shine at the PureChem parking lot on Main Street and food vendors on Main Street.

A velociraptor dinosaur will be appearing in the parade, and will be at the Home Hardware parking lot at 1 p.m.

PUZZLE SOLUTIONS

High tea will be served at 2 p.m. at the Rusty Relics Museum.

Live music and a beer garden will start at 2 p.m.

Jennifer Sedor, who is the chairperson of the Fun Dayz committee, said people can look forward to a couple of popular acts returning for the live music: the Bromantics, who were at Fun Dayz in 2017, and the Milkman’s Sons, who performed last year.

Also schedule to perform are Carlyle’s The Hurricane Pilots and Forget’s 50-or-40.

“I’ve heard them all several times myself, and I’m excited to bring them to the public,” said Sedor. “The Bromantics are back by popular demand. They were a fan favourite in 2017.”

The organizing committee is also in the midst of booking another band.

Sedor pointed out that all of the activities are free to attend, including the family fun zone.

“People can save their money on parking and admission, and hopefully spend it at our stores and at our local vendors and at our craft market,” she said.

Since this is the fourth year for Carlyle Fun Dayz, the festival is becoming more ef�icient to run. A lot of community organizations are on board, and the business community takes a big leadership role.

“We try not to canvass for sponsorships, so businesses come to us to sponsor the event. So we’ve had a really, really good response from people out of town,” she said.

Hotels are starting to �ill up for the weekend of the event.

“This event was created to focus on our local economy,” said Sedor. We are trying to bring something right to downtown Carlyle that is going to get people shopping. People are going to know what services we have. It’s going to put us on the map as a tourist destination in the summer.

“It’s really something where we can come together and showcase what we are as a town and as a community to our neighbouring municipalities and towns.”

Sedor believes last year’s event attracted about 2,500 people, but she admitting that it’s a tough number to gage, because they try to count numbers but don’t have the bene�it of admission.

They take a photo and count the number of heads in that picture.

Sedor noted that last year they only had two musical acts when they attracted so many people. This year they hope to have �ive bands plus the karaoke contest.

“We have all sorts of different activities happening up and down Main Street all day long, so we’re really expecting that number to grow.”

And while it’s still a few more days until this year’s Fun Dayz, Sedor said the committee is already having fun thinking about activities for the milestone �ifth edition next year.

Fast and fresh burgers Cookouts are on the horizon, and people are always on the lookout for delicious dishes that are easily cooked on the grill. Burgers are a staple of grilling season. Burgers might be relatively simple, but that does not mean they have to be ordinary.

Switching up the main ingredient (i.e., the ground meat) used as the basis for burgers is an easy way to add a new �lavor pro�ile to this familiar dish. Turkey is a versatile ingredient that can be �lavored in many different ways with spices and other ingredients to add punch to turkey’s relatively mild taste.

“Turkey Burgers with Mango Salsa” from “Taste of Home Healthy Cooking Cookbook” (Taste of Home Books) by the editors of Taste of Home adds a tropical spin to classic cookout menus. This recipe also offers a special treat by way of a spreadable cheese nestled right in the heart of the burger patties.

Turkey Burgers with Mango Salsa Makes 6 servings

1⁄2 cup dry bread crumbs 1⁄3 cup reduced-fat garlic-herb spreadable cheese 2 green onions, chopped 41⁄2 teaspoons lemon juice 11⁄2 teaspoons grated lemon peel 1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme or 1⁄4 teaspoon dry thyme 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 1⁄2 teaspoon pepper 11⁄2 pounds lean ground turkey 6 whole wheat hamburger buns, split 3⁄4 cup premade mango salsa

In a large bowl, combine the �irst eight ingredients. Crumble turkey over mixture and mix well. Shape into six patties.

Moisten a paper towel with cooking oil; using long-handled tongs, lightly coat the grill rack. Grill burgers, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 inches from the heat for 4 to 6 minutes on each side, or until a thermometer reads 165 F and juices run clear.

Grill buns, uncovered, for 1 to 2 minutes or until toasted. Place burgers on bun bottoms. Top with salsa. Replace bun tops.

How to pick apples like a pro: tips for visiting the orchard Are you ready for apple-picking season?

Make the most of your next visit to the orchard with these tips.

• Do some investigating. Conduct a bit of research to �ind the orchard that can provide you with the experience you’re looking for. Do you prefer to pick organically grown apples? Are your kids eager to try a hay maze and tractor ride? Or perhaps you’d like to have a nice lunch �irst?

Each orchard offers different activities, so �ind the one that best meets your needs.

• Decide how you’ll use your apples. De-

When are children old enough to walk home from school alone?

According to psychologists, children as young as nine years old can walk home alone from school. As long as they have the cognitive ability needed to cross the street safely and there’s a responsible adult waiting at home, entrusting kids to commute on their own will have positive results.

As a parent, however, it’s up to you to determine whether your children have the maturity needed to make the commute without adult supervision. Start by talking to them. Do they seem excited by the prospect? If they appear worried or reticent, they may not be ready.

TAKE IT SLOW When first letting your children walk to school on their own, it’s a good idea to start with a trial period. For example, your kids could begin by coming home alone one day a week. Ask them how it went. If they like it, you can add another day each week.

• Use the ramp to climb aboard the bus if there is one and sit down quickly.

• Keep your backpack on your knees or stow it under your seat.

• Wait for the bus to completely stop moving before getting up.

• Don’t push when exiting the bus.

• Are there laws in your area that dictate when children can commute to school on their own?

• How close is the school?

• Are there busy or dangerous streets on the way?

• Are your kids familiar with pedestrian safety rules? Do they respect these rules when they walk with you?

• Are there crossing guards in the area?

IF YOUR CHILDREN BIKE TO SCHOOL • Always wear a helmet and make sure it’s securely fastened.

• Make certain nothing gets stuck in the bike’s chain or wheel such as backpack straps or an umbrella.

• Use bike lanes whenever possible.

• Don’t go too fast, even if you’re in a hurry.

In addition to providing your kids with these safety tips, it’s a good idea to accompany them to school a few times before they make the trip on their own.

Is your child overscheduled?

Sports teams, dance classes, music lessons, coding clubs and more. There are countless enriching activities available to children that can add value to their lives. However, having too many obligations on top of school work can take a toll.

If your kid no longer sleeps well at night, complains of headaches or stomach aches or seems to struggle to keep up in school, they may have too many activities competing for their time and energy. Other signs they’re overwhelmed include spending less time with friends and not having the opportunity to just play or relax.

So how do you strike the right balance between providing enriching activities and not overscheduling your children? Here are some options.

• Check in with them. Regularly ask if they’re still enjoying their activities.

Don’t pressure your children into pursuing things that they don’t want to do.

• Incorporate free time into their routine.

Make family dinners, game night and playtime a priority. Every weekend, make sure they get some unstructured time to play, read or go outside.

• Be selective about new activities. If they express interest in starting something new,

talk to them about strategies for including it in their existing schedule. It may be necessary to drop something else before committing to a new activity.

As a parent, it’s your job to guard your child’s well-being. This includes their mental health. If they’re showing signs of being overscheduled, make some changes to their routine and give them time to simply relax and be a kid.
