new fire hall project, which is situated on the west side of Carlyle, adjacent to the current home of the department.

Project Manager Alyssa Wolfe reports, “Everything is on schedule and workers are taking advantage of the good weather.”

The metal roofing, which is standing seam, will be completed this week and next up will be the enclosing of the building, giving way to the placement of the floor slab concrete.

Completion of the project will be November 2020 as planned, barring any unforeseen interruptions.

Manor organizations donate to Food Bank

THE

Four community organizations in Manor have each donated $250.00 to the Carlyle and District Food Bank. The four groups being: Manor Recreation Board, Manor Community Hall Board, Manor Regional Library and the Manor Over Sixty Club.

Craig Savill, who is a member of the Manor Community Hall, suggested doing something for the Food Bank and these local community groups got together to consider a plan.

Lucille Dunn, treasurer for three of the organizations, contacted each board and all four came to an agreement to help at this time.

With a growing number of people in the area needing to make use of the Food Bank the consensus was unanimous.

We can start thinking about re-opening the economy

By Murray Mandryk We may soon see a Saskatchewan plan to reopen the economy.

After what appears to be rather promising numbers suggesting new COVID-19 cases have been reduced to low single-digits, Premier Scott Moe suggested that he would be able to move forward with a plan to “re-open” the economy.

However, he did so, ever so gently.

Moe didn’t offer many hints as to what exactly what that might look like. He likely can’t bceause it depend on a variety of factors, not the least of which would be recommendations from the Saskatchewan Health and the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“We are only one outbreak away from interrupting those numbers,” Moe said.

Instead, Moe said any re-opening would happen in a “methodical” fashion. This suggests that whatever happens might not be all that different than what we’ve seen for the past month.

That isn’t exactly exciting news, but if this novel coronavirus has taught us anything, it should be patience.

The good news on the virus fight is that we do seem to winning here and flattening the curve.

On the day Moe made his announcement on April 13, there were only two new COVID-19 cases in the province that day (compared with 14 recoveries).

The day after announcing a “methodical” plan to reopen the economy, Moe was rewarded with further good news of only one new case in Saskatchewan and nine recoveries.

At the time, it left this province with 110 “active” cases, suggesting we are flattening the curve.

However, whether we continue in that right direction is anyone’s guess.

Manitoba had no new cases the day after Moe talked about “re-opening” the economy. However, in Alberta that day, there were 138 new cases, largely because of an outbreak of 128 new cases in Calgary.

We can be cautiously optimistic, but we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. While Moe has vowed to up testing to 1,500 a day, we don’t have widespread testing or virus tracing (critical, when trying to determine who else may be infected) or a vaccine.

Sadly, we don’t know nearly as much about this virus as we need to know.

That said, we also need to get on with our lives at some point and, even if that does not necessarily mean “getting back to normal”.

“There is no magic switch that we can flip that sends everything back to normal overnight,” Moe said.

We obviously can’t go from night to day or from winter to summer. In life, there are always transitions like dawn and spring.

But in that vein, we need to recognize that what drives the economy of a still rural-based economy are critical industries that have, largely, always practiced social distancing by their nature.

Farming and spring seeding are largely that. So is oil, gas and, to a large extend, potash mining.

Much praised, and rightly so, is being heaped these days on nurses, doctors and other health care workers as essential services.

But consider for a moment how essential food production is right now. Consider that our crops and potash mean to tropical island/ resort destinations that don’t necessarily grow all of their own food and don’t have the tourism dollars but still need what we produce.

Sure, faming is not necessarily inhibited by current social distancing regulations, anyway. The more important point, however, is really that we do need to think about “methodically” moving forward with “a plan” to re-open the economy.

If we can find a way to allow high-traffic grocery stores to remain open, can we not do the same thing for lower volume retail or even service sector business if we are seeing evidence of reduced transmissions?

We can move forward. We need to move forward.

Dos, doll houses and DIYs I loved playing with dolls as a child and was fortunate to have all kinds, from babies to Barbies. But I definitely had a favorite and her name was Velvet.

Velvet had long blonde hair that could be extended when you pushed in her belly button and retracted with a turn of the button on her back. Two Shelley Luedtke of my friends were given similar dolls. Shannon had the auburnhaired Crissy, while Siri owned the red-headed Brandi. We would entertain dreams of becoming famous hairstylists as we did our dolls’ hair over and over again in a multitude of styles, having so much fun with the different lengths we could try.

I’m not sure who was responsible, but one day we brought out all our dolls and someone must have felt Barbie needed a shorter style. So, brandishing a pair of scissors, they gave my Barbie a haircut. Of course in the next moment we realized it was permanent. Unlike Velvet, this doll’s hair could not be extended again. It was gone.

Many parents have pictures of their children’s attempts to cut their own hair. What followed was often a less than flattering look for a while. Well, it’s not just the kids anymore. Adults are taking matters—or should I say scissors—into their own hands as they cope with the number of weeks it has been since having last visited a stylist or barber. At-home hair solutions have become a necessity. I am looking at options if this continues for as long as some suspect. By summer I am going to have to consider a ponytail or else start borrowing ball caps from my daughter. Wow, I miss my stylist.

There are more do-it-yourself projects on the go now more than ever, perhaps out of necessity, or sense of challenge, or feeling that there is time currently to tackle something new. It’s not that we think we can do something better than those who make a living at it. We recognize that their skill and expertise come after years of training

and practice. But lack of experience shouldn’t stop anybody from trying something new. While some have found an affinity for a new hobby as a result, others have had less than successful outcomes—but at least have given the rest of us a good laugh in the process.

One of my favorite DIY projects was a doll house we gave our girls when they were quite young. Their enjoyment of dolls, combined with a growing assortment of furniture and accessories, prompted us to look into what options might be best. After considering some of the features we wanted it to have, we decided we should design and build our own. Well, “we” most definitely being a reference to a collective--because that’s what it took. At each stage of design, construction, decoration and even transportation into our family room, we called on the assistance of friends who had the talent, tools and expertise to make it happen.

I can’t begin to calculate the hours of play and enjoyment our daughters experienced, nor the smiles it put on my face when I reflected on the loving gestures of friends who not only provided their skills, but also much needed instruction and guidance along the way. It wouldn’t have happened without them. We knew our limitations in trying to do it on our own.

Far too often people treat situations in life like a DIY project--like something they have to tackle by themselves, They act as if they can’t or shouldn’t seek assistance. They carry burdens on their own or deal with challenges alone. Meantime, countless people are able, willing and ready to help—not to take charge or take over—but to provide encouragement, instruction or maybe even to hold our hands while we learn something new.

Now is a great time for more of us to embrace new projects, while the time to call on others when we need it is any time at all. No matter the endeavor, the best project may very well be doit-yourself, with a healthy size of help along the way.

That’s my outlook.

When a couple marry, they share an anniversary date. Some couples are lucky enough to share a birthdate too. Happy birthday to Amy and Justin Lamontagne, who had their birthdays on Apr. 14.

Sympathy to the family and friends of Eunice Rogers who passed away at the Moosomin integrated Centre on Apr. 14. She was 93 years old and lived a fulfilled life. She and her husband, George raised a family of ten children. Eunice was always a hard worker, did some babysitting and also worked at the Wawota Hospital as a cook. She also found time to volunteer in the community and spent many years involved in the activities at the Wawota United Church. A service and an interment, in the Fernley Cemetery, will be planned at a future date.

When Phil Birnie planned his annual spring bull sale he did not know how different things would be.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way and with limited personal viewing and online bidding the sale went ahead on Apr. 18. WRAZ Red Angus reported a very successful sale.

Word has been received of the passing of Carol Christine Christopher of North Battleford. She passed away on Apr. 8 at the age of 74 years. She was

a daughter to Lester and Inger Wilson, a wife to Don Christopher (53 years), a mother to Kelly (Gilbert) and Robin (Michelle) and a grandmother to Jaiden, Mikayla, Cascilla, Jarod, Caleb and Kiandra. She and Don were involved in curling and golfing and Carol spent many hours volunteering. A celebration of her life will be held once circumstances permit.

Welcome to those who have recently moved to Wawota. Brittany Bourgon and Charles Gibson have purchased the Jay Hamilton house (the former Pearl Wilson home) on Hill Ave; Daryl Heise has moved to Wawota. He purchased the Jay Leader house on Lonsdale St. last fall; Allan and Coralee Brehaut have moved from the farm to the former Wes Palendat home on Pipestone Cres; Jennifer Scverin and her family of Danielle and Hunter have moved into the David Drumm house on Pipestone Ave. They are from Regina.

In these trying times it is important to remember not what we don’t have, but the many things that the Coronavirus can’t take away, such as sunshine, spring, relationships, reading, naps, devotion, baking, humor, music, dancing, imagination, kindness, conversation, love and hope.

getting close to seeding time. I imagine that a few farmers will be out in the fields as soon as possible seeding peas or something, personally I think it’s too soon, but what do I know? However, I do know that the ground still seems frozen to me and it’s fairly dry too. Think we do need a nice rain to soak everything.

Anyway guys whenever you are busy out there in the fields. Please do be careful and take care.

Most of us are still doing self- isolating, keeping to ourselves, waving as we pass someone at a safe distance of course. It will sure be nice to be able to get out and about and actually see someone nearly face to face and have a nice long chat to catch up on different activities. Must say that texting does let one socialize while being at a real safe distance, thank goodness that does let some of us keep sane.

Lol. Hubby keeps himself entertained with his ham radio on most weekends, thank goodness. And I get to watch whatever I wish on the television, even if it’s likely replays, but it keeps me entertained. Gee it is fun to see some of those old curling games, sure makes one realize that time has moved on and everyone is getting older.

In the meantime folks remember – to Keep Physical Distancing – Stay Healthy – Be Safe and Take Care, we WILL get through this together.

Someone left a white jug full of pussy willows at our lounge. Dawn spent the noon hour removing the last Christmas tree, and the iron rods which we used to anchor Santa and the reindeer. Tulips, any day now!

We were blessed to have videos for both Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Our old ears and eyes and brains don’t co-ordinate very well on television. Thank you, Pastor Alex for providing

printed copies, which we could “read, mark and inwardly digest.” His Associated Gospel congregation watched on their phones.

A second welcome surprise came at suppertime on Good Friday, when six of our neighbors came to sing for us in the courtyard.

Wait and see

By Linda Wegner While living through this current pandemic, for me, and I’m sure for many of you, it’s the waiting and the not knowing that’s the hardest part.

Reading the Scriptures this morning I realized that the disciples faced a similar dilemma.

No, they weren’t battling COVID 19 but they were reeling under the predicament they didn’t expect to happen. They’d left their occupations and the approval of others and now Jesus was dead. He said He’d come back but when and how?

That day between death and resurrection seemed unending.

During the forty

days since His resurrection Jesus appeared to His followers on a number of occasions but for some, even that didn’t clear up their many questions. During the last recorded earthly event, the apostles had gathered together and they asked Him: “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

My first observation is their focus – the restoration of an earthly kingdom. In our language, Jesus replied: “I’m not telling you, that’s not your responsibility. You wait here until you are empowered to do my work.”

After their conversation, the miracle of ascension to Heaven took

place. They stood and watched in wonder, then to endorse the credibility of what they’d just observed, two angels assured them it was Jesus.

I can only imagine the range of emotions they experienced!

These are the words that challenged and blessed me; I trust they will do the same for you.

“And He said to them. It is not for you to know the times or seasons…but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me….” (Acts 1) As we wait to see how this whole scenario plays out, let’s allow God to endow us with power to serve Him while we wait and see.

This Easter brought new ways to do worship. For years, three of the downtown Saskatoon churches have carried the cross from one church to another.

This year an Anglican, United and Baptist church shared a service.

The TV station switched them from one church to the other. A few musicians and the clergy took a share of the service. In Philadelphia the Mass at the Basilica was televised for the congregations to watch.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • Would it not just be nice that everyone could behave and get along, respect others and the property of others, obey the laws? OK, enough of the fantasy.

• We continue to have “fat thumbs” which has resulted in several 911 misdials. Folks, if you are not in a rush, and nobody should be right now, take your time with the phone. False alarms, mental health and child welfare calls also continue to occupy or time.

• We understand during present times there is extra stress and child custody matters can be more challenging. As a suggestion we want you to remember children are more perceptive than you may think. They often very accurately determine what your true actions are and why you are taking these actions. Take heed to this and “Take the high road” or the “Road less travelled” and make things easier when exchanging children. They will remember this.

• We continue to deal with individuals that are on release conditions, some are successful and some are not. Several charges for breaching release conditions resulted from our investigations over the past week.

• An individual was reported to be trying to misuse a credit card. When they were questioned by the employee of the business as to their activities, they left. Fortunately, a description of the accused and the vehicle were provided and our ever present traffic Members located the vehicle and quickly determined both occupants were on condi-

tions of not to be in contact with each other. Further investigation determined they both had warrants and with the new charges they were held in custody and brought to court.

• During times like this it is so rewarding to observe the best in people. A wallet was located with a significant amount of money and it was turned into our Detachment. The owner was contacted and did not even realize they were missing their wallet. It is these positives that make our job more rewarding.

• An assault between two intoxicated individuals was reported and investigated, however, after some minor medical treatment it was determined there would be no co-operation and there would therefore be no charges.

• A further assault was reported where the intoxicated aggressor ran and attempted to hide previous to the arrival of the Police. The accused was located in the bushes after a very brief game of hide and seek. They were lodged until the following morning with no charges requested by the victim.

• If you are aware that someone is a victim of a crime you can report it. Without the cooperation of the alleged victim we may not be able to proceed, however, it is our experience once we know about something we can make some progress. Recently such a case was reported to us and the accused has been charged with Domestic Assault related offences and the victim has been provided assistance through our Victim Services Unit. As in all Domestic Violence investigations that result in charges there is a no contact condition.

• A fight resulted in no charges, however, one individual spent time in our custody and was released later without charges.

• The RM of Reciprocity had the chain to their maintenance yard cut. It appears a vehicle then drove through the yard. Nothing appears to be missing at his time.

• Manor, Carlyle and Redvers Volunteer Fire Departments attended to a structure fire and while battling that fire a Member of the RCMP noted another structure had also caught fire. This kept all three Departments occupied. A further fire near Wawota occupied the resources of their Volunteer Fire Department. Fortunately there were no injuries related to any of these fires. Thanks again to these citizens that take the time to get the training to make our communities safer.

• A shop was broken into and a vehicle was gone through in a rural area near Manor. Property of a significant value was stolen including a pressure washer, soil tester and a generator. If you have any information that would assist in this investigation please contact our Detachment or Crime Stoppers.

• An individual was causing problems at a residence and they were subsequently arrested, lodged, and released the following morning after being charged for breaching their release conditions.

• We are investigating allegations of an individual stealing another individual’s prescription pills.

Please ensure you safeguard your medication so as others cannot steal or abuse your medication. Our investigation is continuing.

• If you are not happy while driving your vehicle you unnecessarily use your horn, rev your engine, yell at someone or flip someone the bird, (middle finger up) you could find yourself getting a ticket for stunting. One such individual got such a warning after flipping an off duty police officer the bird.

We can’t determine if they recognized the off duty Member, however, the off duty Member did recognize the individual and notified an on duty Member who dealt with this by way of a warning. Now, have I seen an individual get a ticket for flipping the bird? Well yes I have. It was an on duty Member that the gesture was directed to as the Member and the accused were both driving down the same roadway. The Judge fully supported the Members actions during the trial being “Flipping the bird” is distracting and anything an individual does that is distracting can be deemed to be a danger to the driving public.

• A violator was caught speeding. Due to concerns over their drug use the operator of the motor vehicle was arrested and brought back to the Detachment where they were tested by a Drug Recognition Expert. This driver was fortunate that they only received tickets for the speeding and cannabis in a vehicle.

• An individual that appears to have been abusing drugs chose to enter an occupied residence that was not theirs. In so doing some damage was done to the door. Upon arrival of the Police it was determined this individual was also on release conditions. This individual was therefore arrested and then chose to share their opinion on what they felt should or could happen to the Police. They were therefore also charged for uttering threats. With 8 new charges we did not feel there was any choice but to remand this individual into custody.

• We all realize that people want to get out and, well just get out. That said, please be cognizant of whose property you may venture on to, especially if you are operating an all terrain vehicle or motorcycle. Not only can you damage crop left in the fields from last year you may scare or startle cattle and horses.

• Members issued approximately 10 warnings and 15 tickets over the past reporting period.

• Tickets were issued for cannabis in a vehicle - $360, cell phone use - $580, fail to produce registration - $100 and the most expensive speeding tickets were, well, we had three individuals that received $300 tickets.

• Warnings were issued for inadequate speedometer, no insurance, parking in a no parking zone, operate a motor vehicle without a licence, stunting, inadequate tail lights and speeding.

Weather conditions allow for spring harvesting

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Combining resumed in the Moose Creek area south of Carlyle this past week.

A few of the farmers in the area had a chance to finish up crops they were unable to harvest last fall.

Cees Vandenberg was able to get his last field of durum wheat combined as the weath-

er conditions co-operated. With the mini cold snap the ground was frozen and the crop was in dry condition, giving him the opportunity to straight combine and bin the grain without having to dry it.

The quality was still good enough, having weathered the winter weather and was running over 25 bushels to the acre.

He did have to leave some red lentils and some flax that was too degraded to make it worthwhile to harvest.

Having everything ready for spring seeding, the timing for the cold snap worked out well, leaving him with only the cost of the fuel to bear against the added input costs to have it in storage and able to market it.

Firefighters put out a fire that broke out on April 15 at a secondary building located at a farm north of Wauchope.

Carlyle golf course prepares for opening

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Redvers Fire Department was called to the farm of Randy Gervais located approximately a kilometre north of Wauchope on Wednesday, April 15.

The call came in at 3:04 p.m. and the fire department was on the scene shortly thereafter.

The fire started in the dry grass and a scrap pile and spread to some outbuildings in the farmyard. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing from 20 miles away.

A small shed and shop were total losses, while a house and barn in the yard received minimal damage.

On scene were 15 members and four units of the Redvers Department and a secondary water truck from the Carlyle and R.M. 63 Fire and Rescue. The fire crew was blessed with light winds at the time of the blaze and there were no injuries sustained.

The possible cause of the fire is thought to have started by an electrical malfunction on a portable dugout aerator, catching the grass on fire and then moving into the buildings in the

yard. Exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The Redvers Fire Department was back

in service at 7 p.m., after waiting on location to determine that there were no more hotspots that could reignite.

By Jordan Stricker, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter When Leah Mertz signed up to be the new Saskatchewanderer, she could not imagine a worldwide pandemic putting a halt on the traditional government program that has been taking place over the last decade.

COVID-19 has added interesting challenges to Mertz’s wandering journey, but she is taking it in stride and continues to find ways to celebrate the people and places of Saskatchewan.

“It has pretty much changed everything,” said Mertz.

“Everyone’s jobs have shifted in the last few weeks, that includes the wanderer,” she added.

Mertz said she is exclusively home in Saskatoon. Her intent is to keep content going, putting out a video every Friday and taking advantage of things going on locally.

Mertz refers to her weekly videos as “virtual wandering” where she connects with past wanderers and local businesses, and continues to have a Saskatchewan experience.

“It was a few days of shifting gears. I just wanted to find something that works in the wanderer style,” said Mertz.

“I am trying to stay positive and live in the moment. At the end of the day all I really have is my house and my little world that I can control.

If I can do something positive, something relaxing and good for the soul, I think that will help a bit,” she added.

Mertz has been the Saskatchewanderer since mid-February.

She has been a traveller in her own right before her new gig, living and working from Vancouver to Montreal before

Evelyn Bernice Ingram (nee Caughey) Septemeber 17th, 1922 - April 10th, 2020

Having graced the world for almost a century, Evelyn Bernice Ingram passed away peacefully on April 10, 2020, at the age of 97 in Calgary, Alta. with her daughter Sandra at her side. Evelyn was born to loving and hard-working parents, William Judson Caughey and Genevieve May Hall on Sept. 17, 1922, on a farm near Craven, Sask. She described her first memory as, “standing in the front yard of my home on the slopes of the Qu’Appelle Valley and looking over the valley in the springtime watching the hundreds of pelicans floating on the blue water.”

Significantly younger than her two older sisters, Irene and Elaine, Evelyn recalled many of her younger years as being lonely and it was then that she discovered her love of reading. Having grown up on a farm in the dirty 30s and having memories of paperboys screaming “Extra! Extra! War!” Evelyn represents one of our most iconic generations. She approached life with practicality, strength and humbleness coupled with a deep love and commitment to her family and friends. This was demonstrated by her passion for gardening, participation in the church, culinary and baking skills, deftness with finances and most importantly, a deep devotion to her family. She was always the consummate lady who took pride in never having a hair out of place and having an eye for manners. Evelyn spent most of her life living in Alameda, Sask., which is where she brought up her beloved daughter, Sandra Lynne Ann and met and married the love of her life, Robert Ingram. She was a hard worker who took on many different jobs including waitressing in her parent’s café, working in the Slack’s general store and volunteering in the local library, however; Evelyn always saw her most important role as being there for her family. In 1997, Evelyn and Bob moved to Calgary to be closer to her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her later years, she moved into the McKenzie Towne Retirement home and then to the Brentwood Care Centre. Evelyn is survived by her daughter Sandra Hood (nee Fenton), who spent the last 14 years overseeing her care, and her son-in-law, Gordon Hood; her grandchildren, Colleen Janssen (Gerard), Greg Hood (Heather), and Justin Hood (Lisa); her great-grandchildren Jayke, Sierra, Payton, Vienne, Jorja and Amos; and her niece Della Bigsby (Rod). She was predeceased by her parents Judd and Genevieve Caughey; her sisters Irene Barber and Elaine Barber; and her adoring husband Robert Ingram. Evelyn’s family are deeply appreciative to all her care providers and extend their heartfelt thank you to the Brentwood Care Centre staff, Amrit and Dr. Cenabre for their professional and personal support during Evelyn’s difficult journey with dementia. To Evelyn’s care givers: Marlena, Dora, Day and Paulie, who were by her side every day for five years, we are deeply appreciative for the smiles you brought to her face and how you cared for her with such tenderness and love. Evelyn will be laid to rest beside Robert Ingram in the Alameda Cemetery. A private funeral service will be held at a later date. Bradley D. Cosgrove July 30, 1972 - December 31, 2019 Cosgrove - Bradley D. It is with profound sadness that we announce the loss of Brad (Cosey) Cosgrove on December 31, 2019.

He was born in Virden Hospital on July 30, 1972, to Shayne and Dan Cosgrove (Deb) and stepson to Tim and Earl, brother to Tracy and step-sister to Colleen, and father to Avery, Bradin, Kadie, and Allie.

Shayne, Brad, and Tracy moved to Hamiota in the fall of 1977, where Brad started kindergarten. Brad's younger years were spent at Earl's farm along with his mom and sister. After graduating in 1990 from Hamiota Collegiate, Brad went on to Brandon University, where he graduated with a degree in teaching.

While attending high school, Brad worked part time at Irwin's Drive Inn and Bell's Convenience Store. His university years he spent working at Tequila Willies restaurant, evenings and weekends and Dept. of Highways in the summer months.

After university, Brad lived in Virden and worked for his dad at the Esso Bulk Station, and from there he moved on to work with pipeline in Cromer. The winter of 2000, Brad went west to Slave Lake to operate a high hoe for Dave Simpson. That fall he began a short teaching career, which saw him in Wollaston Lake for one year, then to Provost, Alberta, for one year.

On December 22, 2001, Brad married Melissa Carrier from Storthoaks, Saskatchewan. In 2002, they moved to Fort McMurray, where Brad worked for six years with Enbridge pipeline. In March 2008, he transferred to Regina to continue work with Enbridge. Then 2012 saw a move to Storthoakes, Saskatchewan, where his last place of employment was with Kingston Midstream Pipeline at Alida, Saskatchewan.

Brad enjoyed and excelled in many sports, badminton, baseball, hockey, and golf. Good times and many friends were made over the years.

Brad enjoyed his summers golfing and sitting around the campfire visiting with his family and many friends. He and his family spent seven seasons from 2009 until 2016 at a seasonal campsite at Oak Lake Resort, alongside his Mom and Tim. His designer Oiler fire pit spent many nights glowing. He enjoyed the hours on the lake watching his children tubing and fishing from Tim and mom's pontoon boat. He always had a smile/smirk for them.

Now he is at peace from the world. Service was held at Virden Tundra Place on January 8, 2020, with interment at Breadalbane cemetery.

Elizabeth Margaret Beatty (nee Pontius) 1932 - 2020

It is with hearts full of love and memories, that we announce Elizabeth Margaret Beatty (nee Pontius) passed away Thursday, April 9th at the age of 87 years.

Betty was born June 19, 1932 to Ralph and Elizabeth Pontius - one of eight children. She attended school in Carlyle and belonged to various youth groups and took part in most sports. After school and on Saturdays, she worked in the Carlyle Bakery. In 1950, she moved to Regina where she obtained employment with the Saskatchewan Government and attended night school to obtain a secretarial certificate.

In 1953, she married Robert Beatty and they continued to live in Regina until Robert’s Dad had a farming accident and they moved back to look after the farm.

Betty was later employed in a law office in Carlyle before getting a job in the Moose Mountain Park Office. When Robert retired and purchased a water-hauling business, she became his bookkeeper.

In 1975, Betty and Robert moved to Kenosee Lake. They also purchased 40 acres of land adjacent to Moose Mountain Provincial Park, which became a hobby farm and home to endless adventures for their grandkids. Every day, lunches would be prepared and delivered by Grandma.

Betty was Robert’s willing assistant when it came to decorating their home inside and out for Christmas. Their collective yearly effort creating a unique and imaginative outdoor Christmas display delighted neighbours and friends.

To say that Betty’s world revolved around her grandchildren would be an understatement. She took full advantage of attending as many sporting events, karate and dance recitals as she could – always with a camcorder attached to her hand, recording memories that she would proudly show to anyone who would watch.

When her grandkids were visiting, Betty’s love was evident. It could be seen through long walks, baking, bingo night, family line dancing lessons, playing cards, shopping trips to town, garage sale circuits and bike rides around the park. After collecting enough skis for everyone, Betty could also be seen leading the grandkids on a cross country skiing adventure.

Lastly, as long as they washed their hands, Betty’s pantry was always overflowing with treats and she made sure that everyone got to eat their favourite things at Grandma’s house. As the kids got older, their favourites were prepared by Betty, frozen and sent to wherever they might be working, studying or beginning their own lives. No matter where they were or how old they got, Betty never stopped caring for her grandkids.

Betty’s memory will be forever cherished by her children, Dianne (Ken), Brenda (John) and Tim (Cathi); grandchildren, Cory (Jodi), Crystal (Jeremy), Sheldon (Reni), Amy (Travis), Kiersten (Jen), Shana (Bill), Riley (Laura) and Keisha (Mike); granddaughter-in-law, Sherry (Laine); great-grandchildren, Dessa, Taylor, Kadence, Jayla, Daphne, Clara, Darius, Carter, Keisha, Ryder, Elliot, Lucas, Nixon, Anna, Liam, Sophia, Laithan, Quin, Eve and Ivi; siblings, Joan and Donald and special nephew, Barry.

Betty is predeceased by her husband, Robert; parents, Ralph and Elizabeth, brothers, Elmer, George and O’Ray; sisters, Esther, Ella and grandson, Adam.

In lieu of flowers that do not last, the family requests you call a parent, child or grandparent and make a memory that will last.

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our mom, gramma Nan, great gramma, and great-great gramma Annie Eunice Marjorie Rogers in Moosomin Hospital, on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at the age of 93 years young.

Family is a big part of Eunice’s legacy. Her heart was huge and she wrote, “I love my family dearly”, my grandkids, and my sons and daughters in law.

She always said no one child is more important than the next and that she loves us all the same. Mom thought we are “a great gang with lots of fun and laughter,” and was “proud of everyone.” Eunice is also survived by her sisters in law Phyllis and Sylvia Weatherald, her cousins, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Eunice was predeceased by her late husband George Rogers, her son Barry Rogers, and her infant daughter; her parents Connie and Lillian Weatherald; her brothers Peter Webb, Gerald, Don, and Lionel Weatherald; her sister Audrey Johnson; her brothers in law Les, Norman, and Wilf Rogers, her sisters in law Bessy Greenbank and Edith Rogers, as well as her son in law Wilf Kinney.

Eunice was born in Wawota, Saskatchewan on November 29, 1926 to Connie and Lillian Weatherald. She was raised in a log shack with her 3 brothers Gerald, Don, Lionel; and her sister Audrey. When her mother passed away Peter (Webb) was an infant, and Eunice and some of her family were moved into the Fernley Convent where she attained her schooling. It was there she studied and kept a watchful eye on her brothers and sister.

After leaving the convent she went to live with her father and sibling. One of her cousins tells stories of coming to play with the boys in her family and fondly remembers Eunice for her excellent meals and her kind demeanour. When Eunice was a teen she worked for her Aunt Emma and Uncle Elmer Smulan as their housekeeper.

It was there she met George Rogers who later become her husband. Eunice was 18 when she married George on December 5, 1944 in Wawota, Saskatchewan. He built her a little house on Railway Street and there they began to raise their family. They had ten children (5 girls, 5 boys) and as their family grew so did the need to expand their house.

Eunice was a hard worker and a caring mother. It was important for her to assure meals were on time, baking was done, clothes were made, washed, and in good repair all the while balancing the needs of her children to the best of her ability. We fondly remember coming home after school and being greeted by her warm smile, and the smell of freshly baked bread, homemade donuts, cakes and cooking. One of the important lessons mom taught us was the difference between wants and needs.

Eunice was a true matriarch, kept close watch over her children and made sure to have regular contact with her extended family and friends.

When her husband became ill Eunice gained employment at the Wawota Hospital.

There she advanced to the role of head cook and was oftentimes complimented on the meals she made. They were known to be nutritious, balanced and tasty. Eunice was employed there for 10 years before she retired.

Eunice and George loved to travel, be it on a family vacation or a trip to Alaska, across Canada, or into the States. Eunice was a social person and a sincere friend. She was a prudent shopper and a generous giver. During her later years Eunice gave much of her time to volunteer work for the United Church, and to the local thrift store where many churches in her community benefited. Mom could never sit idle. In the span of her lifetime she knit hundreds of pairs of mittens for her family, her friends, and for different charities.

Eunice and George were married for 62 years, and Eunice lived in the house that George built for 70 years. Last August, 2019 Eunice moved into the Maryfield Villa where she was very happy to enjoy the company of many of her life-long friends.

We will remember mom for her genuine love, kindness, for the many lessons in life she taught us. Eunice will never be forgotten by her friends and her family.

As a result of the restrictions regarding Covid -19, and the current government recommendations, a private family service, as per her request, will be held at a later date at the Fernley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Eunice may be made to The Wawota Lions Club.

Arrangements are in care of G.R. Carscadden Funeral Chapels, Moosomin, Sask.

Manor organizations donate to Food Bank

THE

Four community organizations in Manor have each donated $250.00 to the Carlyle and District Food Bank. The four groups being: Manor Recreation Board, Manor Community Hall Board, Manor Regional Library and the Manor Over Sixty Club.

Craig Savill, who is a member of the Manor Community Hall, suggested doing something for the Food Bank and these local community groups got together to consider a plan.

Lucille Dunn, treasurer for three of the organizations, contacted each board and all four came to an agreement to help at this time.

With a growing number of people in the area needing to make use of the Food Bank the consensus was unanimous.

We can start thinking about re-opening the economy

By Murray Mandryk We may soon see a Saskatchewan plan to reopen the economy.

After what appears to be rather promising numbers suggesting new COVID-19 cases have been reduced to low single-digits, Premier Scott Moe suggested that he would be able to move forward with a plan to “re-open” the economy.

However, he did so, ever so gently.

Moe didn’t offer many hints as to what exactly what that might look like. He likely can’t bceause it depend on a variety of factors, not the least of which would be recommendations from the Saskatchewan Health and the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“We are only one outbreak away from interrupting those numbers,” Moe said.

Instead, Moe said any re-opening would happen in a “methodical” fashion. This suggests that whatever happens might not be all that different than what we’ve seen for the past month.

That isn’t exactly exciting news, but if this novel coronavirus has taught us anything, it should be patience.

The good news on the virus fight is that we do seem to winning here and flattening the curve.

On the day Moe made his announcement on April 13, there were only two new COVID-19 cases in the province that day (compared with 14 recoveries).

The day after announcing a “methodical” plan to reopen the economy, Moe was rewarded with further good news of only one new case in Saskatchewan and nine recoveries.

At the time, it left this province with 110 “active” cases, suggesting we are flattening the curve.

However, whether we continue in that right direction is anyone’s guess.

Manitoba had no new cases the day after Moe talked about “re-opening” the economy. However, in Alberta that day, there were 138 new cases, largely because of an outbreak of 128 new cases in Calgary.

We can be cautiously optimistic, but we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. While Moe has vowed to up testing to 1,500 a day, we don’t have widespread testing or virus tracing (critical, when trying to determine who else may be infected) or a vaccine.

Sadly, we don’t know nearly as much about this virus as we need to know.

That said, we also need to get on with our lives at some point and, even if that does not necessarily mean “getting back to normal”.

“There is no magic switch that we can flip that sends everything back to normal overnight,” Moe said.

We obviously can’t go from night to day or from winter to summer. In life, there are always transitions like dawn and spring.

But in that vein, we need to recognize that what drives the economy of a still rural-based economy are critical industries that have, largely, always practiced social distancing by their nature.

Farming and spring seeding are largely that. So is oil, gas and, to a large extend, potash mining.

Much praised, and rightly so, is being heaped these days on nurses, doctors and other health care workers as essential services.

But consider for a moment how essential food production is right now. Consider that our crops and potash mean to tropical island/ resort destinations that don’t necessarily grow all of their own food and don’t have the tourism dollars but still need what we produce.

Sure, faming is not necessarily inhibited by current social distancing regulations, anyway. The more important point, however, is really that we do need to think about “methodically” moving forward with “a plan” to re-open the economy.

If we can find a way to allow high-traffic grocery stores to remain open, can we not do the same thing for lower volume retail or even service sector business if we are seeing evidence of reduced transmissions?

We can move forward. We need to move forward.

Dos, doll houses and DIYs I loved playing with dolls as a child and was fortunate to have all kinds, from babies to Barbies. But I definitely had a favorite and her name was Velvet.

Velvet had long blonde hair that could be extended when you pushed in her belly button and retracted with a turn of the button on her back. Two Shelley Luedtke of my friends were given similar dolls. Shannon had the auburnhaired Crissy, while Siri owned the red-headed Brandi. We would entertain dreams of becoming famous hairstylists as we did our dolls’ hair over and over again in a multitude of styles, having so much fun with the different lengths we could try.

I’m not sure who was responsible, but one day we brought out all our dolls and someone must have felt Barbie needed a shorter style. So, brandishing a pair of scissors, they gave my Barbie a haircut. Of course in the next moment we realized it was permanent. Unlike Velvet, this doll’s hair could not be extended again. It was gone.

Many parents have pictures of their children’s attempts to cut their own hair. What followed was often a less than flattering look for a while. Well, it’s not just the kids anymore. Adults are taking matters—or should I say scissors—into their own hands as they cope with the number of weeks it has been since having last visited a stylist or barber. At-home hair solutions have become a necessity. I am looking at options if this continues for as long as some suspect. By summer I am going to have to consider a ponytail or else start borrowing ball caps from my daughter. Wow, I miss my stylist.

There are more do-it-yourself projects on the go now more than ever, perhaps out of necessity, or sense of challenge, or feeling that there is time currently to tackle something new. It’s not that we think we can do something better than those who make a living at it. We recognize that their skill and expertise come after years of training

and practice. But lack of experience shouldn’t stop anybody from trying something new. While some have found an affinity for a new hobby as a result, others have had less than successful outcomes—but at least have given the rest of us a good laugh in the process.

One of my favorite DIY projects was a doll house we gave our girls when they were quite young. Their enjoyment of dolls, combined with a growing assortment of furniture and accessories, prompted us to look into what options might be best. After considering some of the features we wanted it to have, we decided we should design and build our own. Well, “we” most definitely being a reference to a collective--because that’s what it took. At each stage of design, construction, decoration and even transportation into our family room, we called on the assistance of friends who had the talent, tools and expertise to make it happen.

I can’t begin to calculate the hours of play and enjoyment our daughters experienced, nor the smiles it put on my face when I reflected on the loving gestures of friends who not only provided their skills, but also much needed instruction and guidance along the way. It wouldn’t have happened without them. We knew our limitations in trying to do it on our own.

Far too often people treat situations in life like a DIY project--like something they have to tackle by themselves, They act as if they can’t or shouldn’t seek assistance. They carry burdens on their own or deal with challenges alone. Meantime, countless people are able, willing and ready to help—not to take charge or take over—but to provide encouragement, instruction or maybe even to hold our hands while we learn something new.

Now is a great time for more of us to embrace new projects, while the time to call on others when we need it is any time at all. No matter the endeavor, the best project may very well be doit-yourself, with a healthy size of help along the way.

That’s my outlook.

When a couple marry, they share an anniversary date. Some couples are lucky enough to share a birthdate too. Happy birthday to Amy and Justin Lamontagne, who had their birthdays on Apr. 14.

Sympathy to the family and friends of Eunice Rogers who passed away at the Moosomin integrated Centre on Apr. 14. She was 93 years old and lived a fulfilled life. She and her husband, George raised a family of ten children. Eunice was always a hard worker, did some babysitting and also worked at the Wawota Hospital as a cook. She also found time to volunteer in the community and spent many years involved in the activities at the Wawota United Church. A service and an interment, in the Fernley Cemetery, will be planned at a future date.

When Phil Birnie planned his annual spring bull sale he did not know how different things would be.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way and with limited personal viewing and online bidding the sale went ahead on Apr. 18. WRAZ Red Angus reported a very successful sale.

Word has been received of the passing of Carol Christine Christopher of North Battleford. She passed away on Apr. 8 at the age of 74 years. She was

a daughter to Lester and Inger Wilson, a wife to Don Christopher (53 years), a mother to Kelly (Gilbert) and Robin (Michelle) and a grandmother to Jaiden, Mikayla, Cascilla, Jarod, Caleb and Kiandra. She and Don were involved in curling and golfing and Carol spent many hours volunteering. A celebration of her life will be held once circumstances permit.

Welcome to those who have recently moved to Wawota. Brittany Bourgon and Charles Gibson have purchased the Jay Hamilton house (the former Pearl Wilson home) on Hill Ave; Daryl Heise has moved to Wawota. He purchased the Jay Leader house on Lonsdale St. last fall; Allan and Coralee Brehaut have moved from the farm to the former Wes Palendat home on Pipestone Cres; Jennifer Scverin and her family of Danielle and Hunter have moved into the David Drumm house on Pipestone Ave. They are from Regina.

In these trying times it is important to remember not what we don’t have, but the many things that the Coronavirus can’t take away, such as sunshine, spring, relationships, reading, naps, devotion, baking, humor, music, dancing, imagination, kindness, conversation, love and hope.

getting close to seeding time. I imagine that a few farmers will be out in the fields as soon as possible seeding peas or something, personally I think it’s too soon, but what do I know? However, I do know that the ground still seems frozen to me and it’s fairly dry too. Think we do need a nice rain to soak everything.

Anyway guys whenever you are busy out there in the fields. Please do be careful and take care.

Most of us are still doing self- isolating, keeping to ourselves, waving as we pass someone at a safe distance of course. It will sure be nice to be able to get out and about and actually see someone nearly face to face and have a nice long chat to catch up on different activities. Must say that texting does let one socialize while being at a real safe distance, thank goodness that does let some of us keep sane.

Lol. Hubby keeps himself entertained with his ham radio on most weekends, thank goodness. And I get to watch whatever I wish on the television, even if it’s likely replays, but it keeps me entertained. Gee it is fun to see some of those old curling games, sure makes one realize that time has moved on and everyone is getting older.

In the meantime folks remember – to Keep Physical Distancing – Stay Healthy – Be Safe and Take Care, we WILL get through this together.

Someone left a white jug full of pussy willows at our lounge. Dawn spent the noon hour removing the last Christmas tree, and the iron rods which we used to anchor Santa and the reindeer. Tulips, any day now!

We were blessed to have videos for both Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Our old ears and eyes and brains don’t co-ordinate very well on television. Thank you, Pastor Alex for providing

printed copies, which we could “read, mark and inwardly digest.” His Associated Gospel congregation watched on their phones.

A second welcome surprise came at suppertime on Good Friday, when six of our neighbors came to sing for us in the courtyard.

Wait and see

By Linda Wegner While living through this current pandemic, for me, and I’m sure for many of you, it’s the waiting and the not knowing that’s the hardest part.

Reading the Scriptures this morning I realized that the disciples faced a similar dilemma.

No, they weren’t battling COVID 19 but they were reeling under the predicament they didn’t expect to happen. They’d left their occupations and the approval of others and now Jesus was dead. He said He’d come back but when and how?

That day between death and resurrection seemed unending.

During the forty

days since His resurrection Jesus appeared to His followers on a number of occasions but for some, even that didn’t clear up their many questions. During the last recorded earthly event, the apostles had gathered together and they asked Him: “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

My first observation is their focus – the restoration of an earthly kingdom. In our language, Jesus replied: “I’m not telling you, that’s not your responsibility. You wait here until you are empowered to do my work.”

After their conversation, the miracle of ascension to Heaven took

place. They stood and watched in wonder, then to endorse the credibility of what they’d just observed, two angels assured them it was Jesus.

I can only imagine the range of emotions they experienced!

These are the words that challenged and blessed me; I trust they will do the same for you.

“And He said to them. It is not for you to know the times or seasons…but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me….” (Acts 1) As we wait to see how this whole scenario plays out, let’s allow God to endow us with power to serve Him while we wait and see.

This Easter brought new ways to do worship. For years, three of the downtown Saskatoon churches have carried the cross from one church to another.

This year an Anglican, United and Baptist church shared a service.

The TV station switched them from one church to the other. A few musicians and the clergy took a share of the service. In Philadelphia the Mass at the Basilica was televised for the congregations to watch.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • Would it not just be nice that everyone could behave and get along, respect others and the property of others, obey the laws? OK, enough of the fantasy.

• We continue to have “fat thumbs” which has resulted in several 911 misdials. Folks, if you are not in a rush, and nobody should be right now, take your time with the phone. False alarms, mental health and child welfare calls also continue to occupy or time.

• We understand during present times there is extra stress and child custody matters can be more challenging. As a suggestion we want you to remember children are more perceptive than you may think. They often very accurately determine what your true actions are and why you are taking these actions. Take heed to this and “Take the high road” or the “Road less travelled” and make things easier when exchanging children. They will remember this.

• We continue to deal with individuals that are on release conditions, some are successful and some are not. Several charges for breaching release conditions resulted from our investigations over the past week.

• An individual was reported to be trying to misuse a credit card. When they were questioned by the employee of the business as to their activities, they left. Fortunately, a description of the accused and the vehicle were provided and our ever present traffic Members located the vehicle and quickly determined both occupants were on condi-

tions of not to be in contact with each other. Further investigation determined they both had warrants and with the new charges they were held in custody and brought to court.

• During times like this it is so rewarding to observe the best in people. A wallet was located with a significant amount of money and it was turned into our Detachment. The owner was contacted and did not even realize they were missing their wallet. It is these positives that make our job more rewarding.

• An assault between two intoxicated individuals was reported and investigated, however, after some minor medical treatment it was determined there would be no co-operation and there would therefore be no charges.

• A further assault was reported where the intoxicated aggressor ran and attempted to hide previous to the arrival of the Police. The accused was located in the bushes after a very brief game of hide and seek. They were lodged until the following morning with no charges requested by the victim.

• If you are aware that someone is a victim of a crime you can report it. Without the cooperation of the alleged victim we may not be able to proceed, however, it is our experience once we know about something we can make some progress. Recently such a case was reported to us and the accused has been charged with Domestic Assault related offences and the victim has been provided assistance through our Victim Services Unit. As in all Domestic Violence investigations that result in charges there is a no contact condition.

• A fight resulted in no charges, however, one individual spent time in our custody and was released later without charges.

• The RM of Reciprocity had the chain to their maintenance yard cut. It appears a vehicle then drove through the yard. Nothing appears to be missing at his time.

• Manor, Carlyle and Redvers Volunteer Fire Departments attended to a structure fire and while battling that fire a Member of the RCMP noted another structure had also caught fire. This kept all three Departments occupied. A further fire near Wawota occupied the resources of their Volunteer Fire Department. Fortunately there were no injuries related to any of these fires. Thanks again to these citizens that take the time to get the training to make our communities safer.

• A shop was broken into and a vehicle was gone through in a rural area near Manor. Property of a significant value was stolen including a pressure washer, soil tester and a generator. If you have any information that would assist in this investigation please contact our Detachment or Crime Stoppers.

• An individual was causing problems at a residence and they were subsequently arrested, lodged, and released the following morning after being charged for breaching their release conditions.

• We are investigating allegations of an individual stealing another individual’s prescription pills.

Please ensure you safeguard your medication so as others cannot steal or abuse your medication. Our investigation is continuing.

• If you are not happy while driving your vehicle you unnecessarily use your horn, rev your engine, yell at someone or flip someone the bird, (middle finger up) you could find yourself getting a ticket for stunting. One such individual got such a warning after flipping an off duty police officer the bird.

We can’t determine if they recognized the off duty Member, however, the off duty Member did recognize the individual and notified an on duty Member who dealt with this by way of a warning. Now, have I seen an individual get a ticket for flipping the bird? Well yes I have. It was an on duty Member that the gesture was directed to as the Member and the accused were both driving down the same roadway. The Judge fully supported the Members actions during the trial being “Flipping the bird” is distracting and anything an individual does that is distracting can be deemed to be a danger to the driving public.

• A violator was caught speeding. Due to concerns over their drug use the operator of the motor vehicle was arrested and brought back to the Detachment where they were tested by a Drug Recognition Expert. This driver was fortunate that they only received tickets for the speeding and cannabis in a vehicle.

• An individual that appears to have been abusing drugs chose to enter an occupied residence that was not theirs. In so doing some damage was done to the door. Upon arrival of the Police it was determined this individual was also on release conditions. This individual was therefore arrested and then chose to share their opinion on what they felt should or could happen to the Police. They were therefore also charged for uttering threats. With 8 new charges we did not feel there was any choice but to remand this individual into custody.

• We all realize that people want to get out and, well just get out. That said, please be cognizant of whose property you may venture on to, especially if you are operating an all terrain vehicle or motorcycle. Not only can you damage crop left in the fields from last year you may scare or startle cattle and horses.

• Members issued approximately 10 warnings and 15 tickets over the past reporting period.

• Tickets were issued for cannabis in a vehicle - $360, cell phone use - $580, fail to produce registration - $100 and the most expensive speeding tickets were, well, we had three individuals that received $300 tickets.

• Warnings were issued for inadequate speedometer, no insurance, parking in a no parking zone, operate a motor vehicle without a licence, stunting, inadequate tail lights and speeding.

Weather conditions allow for spring harvesting

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Combining resumed in the Moose Creek area south of Carlyle this past week.

A few of the farmers in the area had a chance to finish up crops they were unable to harvest last fall.

Cees Vandenberg was able to get his last field of durum wheat combined as the weath-

er conditions co-operated. With the mini cold snap the ground was frozen and the crop was in dry condition, giving him the opportunity to straight combine and bin the grain without having to dry it.

The quality was still good enough, having weathered the winter weather and was running over 25 bushels to the acre.

He did have to leave some red lentils and some flax that was too degraded to make it worthwhile to harvest.

Having everything ready for spring seeding, the timing for the cold snap worked out well, leaving him with only the cost of the fuel to bear against the added input costs to have it in storage and able to market it.

Firefighters put out a fire that broke out on April 15 at a secondary building located at a farm north of Wauchope.

Carlyle golf course prepares for opening

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Redvers Fire Department was called to the farm of Randy Gervais located approximately a kilometre north of Wauchope on Wednesday, April 15.

The call came in at 3:04 p.m. and the fire department was on the scene shortly thereafter.

The fire started in the dry grass and a scrap pile and spread to some outbuildings in the farmyard. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing from 20 miles away.

A small shed and shop were total losses, while a house and barn in the yard received minimal damage.

On scene were 15 members and four units of the Redvers Department and a secondary water truck from the Carlyle and R.M. 63 Fire and Rescue. The fire crew was blessed with light winds at the time of the blaze and there were no injuries sustained.

The possible cause of the fire is thought to have started by an electrical malfunction on a portable dugout aerator, catching the grass on fire and then moving into the buildings in the

yard. Exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The Redvers Fire Department was back

in service at 7 p.m., after waiting on location to determine that there were no more hotspots that could reignite.

By Jordan Stricker, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter When Leah Mertz signed up to be the new Saskatchewanderer, she could not imagine a worldwide pandemic putting a halt on the traditional government program that has been taking place over the last decade.

COVID-19 has added interesting challenges to Mertz’s wandering journey, but she is taking it in stride and continues to find ways to celebrate the people and places of Saskatchewan.

“It has pretty much changed everything,” said Mertz.

“Everyone’s jobs have shifted in the last few weeks, that includes the wanderer,” she added.

Mertz said she is exclusively home in Saskatoon. Her intent is to keep content going, putting out a video every Friday and taking advantage of things going on locally.

Mertz refers to her weekly videos as “virtual wandering” where she connects with past wanderers and local businesses, and continues to have a Saskatchewan experience.

“It was a few days of shifting gears. I just wanted to find something that works in the wanderer style,” said Mertz.

“I am trying to stay positive and live in the moment. At the end of the day all I really have is my house and my little world that I can control.

If I can do something positive, something relaxing and good for the soul, I think that will help a bit,” she added.

Mertz has been the Saskatchewanderer since mid-February.

She has been a traveller in her own right before her new gig, living and working from Vancouver to Montreal before

Evelyn Bernice Ingram (nee Caughey) Septemeber 17th, 1922 - April 10th, 2020

Having graced the world for almost a century, Evelyn Bernice Ingram passed away peacefully on April 10, 2020, at the age of 97 in Calgary, Alta. with her daughter Sandra at her side. Evelyn was born to loving and hard-working parents, William Judson Caughey and Genevieve May Hall on Sept. 17, 1922, on a farm near Craven, Sask. She described her first memory as, “standing in the front yard of my home on the slopes of the Qu’Appelle Valley and looking over the valley in the springtime watching the hundreds of pelicans floating on the blue water.”

Significantly younger than her two older sisters, Irene and Elaine, Evelyn recalled many of her younger years as being lonely and it was then that she discovered her love of reading. Having grown up on a farm in the dirty 30s and having memories of paperboys screaming “Extra! Extra! War!” Evelyn represents one of our most iconic generations. She approached life with practicality, strength and humbleness coupled with a deep love and commitment to her family and friends. This was demonstrated by her passion for gardening, participation in the church, culinary and baking skills, deftness with finances and most importantly, a deep devotion to her family. She was always the consummate lady who took pride in never having a hair out of place and having an eye for manners. Evelyn spent most of her life living in Alameda, Sask., which is where she brought up her beloved daughter, Sandra Lynne Ann and met and married the love of her life, Robert Ingram. She was a hard worker who took on many different jobs including waitressing in her parent’s café, working in the Slack’s general store and volunteering in the local library, however; Evelyn always saw her most important role as being there for her family. In 1997, Evelyn and Bob moved to Calgary to be closer to her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her later years, she moved into the McKenzie Towne Retirement home and then to the Brentwood Care Centre. Evelyn is survived by her daughter Sandra Hood (nee Fenton), who spent the last 14 years overseeing her care, and her son-in-law, Gordon Hood; her grandchildren, Colleen Janssen (Gerard), Greg Hood (Heather), and Justin Hood (Lisa); her great-grandchildren Jayke, Sierra, Payton, Vienne, Jorja and Amos; and her niece Della Bigsby (Rod). She was predeceased by her parents Judd and Genevieve Caughey; her sisters Irene Barber and Elaine Barber; and her adoring husband Robert Ingram. Evelyn’s family are deeply appreciative to all her care providers and extend their heartfelt thank you to the Brentwood Care Centre staff, Amrit and Dr. Cenabre for their professional and personal support during Evelyn’s difficult journey with dementia. To Evelyn’s care givers: Marlena, Dora, Day and Paulie, who were by her side every day for five years, we are deeply appreciative for the smiles you brought to her face and how you cared for her with such tenderness and love. Evelyn will be laid to rest beside Robert Ingram in the Alameda Cemetery. A private funeral service will be held at a later date. Bradley D. Cosgrove July 30, 1972 - December 31, 2019 Cosgrove - Bradley D. It is with profound sadness that we announce the loss of Brad (Cosey) Cosgrove on December 31, 2019.

He was born in Virden Hospital on July 30, 1972, to Shayne and Dan Cosgrove (Deb) and stepson to Tim and Earl, brother to Tracy and step-sister to Colleen, and father to Avery, Bradin, Kadie, and Allie.

Shayne, Brad, and Tracy moved to Hamiota in the fall of 1977, where Brad started kindergarten. Brad's younger years were spent at Earl's farm along with his mom and sister. After graduating in 1990 from Hamiota Collegiate, Brad went on to Brandon University, where he graduated with a degree in teaching.

While attending high school, Brad worked part time at Irwin's Drive Inn and Bell's Convenience Store. His university years he spent working at Tequila Willies restaurant, evenings and weekends and Dept. of Highways in the summer months.

After university, Brad lived in Virden and worked for his dad at the Esso Bulk Station, and from there he moved on to work with pipeline in Cromer. The winter of 2000, Brad went west to Slave Lake to operate a high hoe for Dave Simpson. That fall he began a short teaching career, which saw him in Wollaston Lake for one year, then to Provost, Alberta, for one year.

On December 22, 2001, Brad married Melissa Carrier from Storthoaks, Saskatchewan. In 2002, they moved to Fort McMurray, where Brad worked for six years with Enbridge pipeline. In March 2008, he transferred to Regina to continue work with Enbridge. Then 2012 saw a move to Storthoakes, Saskatchewan, where his last place of employment was with Kingston Midstream Pipeline at Alida, Saskatchewan.

Brad enjoyed and excelled in many sports, badminton, baseball, hockey, and golf. Good times and many friends were made over the years.

Brad enjoyed his summers golfing and sitting around the campfire visiting with his family and many friends. He and his family spent seven seasons from 2009 until 2016 at a seasonal campsite at Oak Lake Resort, alongside his Mom and Tim. His designer Oiler fire pit spent many nights glowing. He enjoyed the hours on the lake watching his children tubing and fishing from Tim and mom's pontoon boat. He always had a smile/smirk for them.

Now he is at peace from the world. Service was held at Virden Tundra Place on January 8, 2020, with interment at Breadalbane cemetery.

Elizabeth Margaret Beatty (nee Pontius) 1932 - 2020

It is with hearts full of love and memories, that we announce Elizabeth Margaret Beatty (nee Pontius) passed away Thursday, April 9th at the age of 87 years.

Betty was born June 19, 1932 to Ralph and Elizabeth Pontius - one of eight children. She attended school in Carlyle and belonged to various youth groups and took part in most sports. After school and on Saturdays, she worked in the Carlyle Bakery. In 1950, she moved to Regina where she obtained employment with the Saskatchewan Government and attended night school to obtain a secretarial certificate.

In 1953, she married Robert Beatty and they continued to live in Regina until Robert’s Dad had a farming accident and they moved back to look after the farm.

Betty was later employed in a law office in Carlyle before getting a job in the Moose Mountain Park Office. When Robert retired and purchased a water-hauling business, she became his bookkeeper.

In 1975, Betty and Robert moved to Kenosee Lake. They also purchased 40 acres of land adjacent to Moose Mountain Provincial Park, which became a hobby farm and home to endless adventures for their grandkids. Every day, lunches would be prepared and delivered by Grandma.

Betty was Robert’s willing assistant when it came to decorating their home inside and out for Christmas. Their collective yearly effort creating a unique and imaginative outdoor Christmas display delighted neighbours and friends.

To say that Betty’s world revolved around her grandchildren would be an understatement. She took full advantage of attending as many sporting events, karate and dance recitals as she could – always with a camcorder attached to her hand, recording memories that she would proudly show to anyone who would watch.

When her grandkids were visiting, Betty’s love was evident. It could be seen through long walks, baking, bingo night, family line dancing lessons, playing cards, shopping trips to town, garage sale circuits and bike rides around the park. After collecting enough skis for everyone, Betty could also be seen leading the grandkids on a cross country skiing adventure.

Lastly, as long as they washed their hands, Betty’s pantry was always overflowing with treats and she made sure that everyone got to eat their favourite things at Grandma’s house. As the kids got older, their favourites were prepared by Betty, frozen and sent to wherever they might be working, studying or beginning their own lives. No matter where they were or how old they got, Betty never stopped caring for her grandkids.

Betty’s memory will be forever cherished by her children, Dianne (Ken), Brenda (John) and Tim (Cathi); grandchildren, Cory (Jodi), Crystal (Jeremy), Sheldon (Reni), Amy (Travis), Kiersten (Jen), Shana (Bill), Riley (Laura) and Keisha (Mike); granddaughter-in-law, Sherry (Laine); great-grandchildren, Dessa, Taylor, Kadence, Jayla, Daphne, Clara, Darius, Carter, Keisha, Ryder, Elliot, Lucas, Nixon, Anna, Liam, Sophia, Laithan, Quin, Eve and Ivi; siblings, Joan and Donald and special nephew, Barry.

Betty is predeceased by her husband, Robert; parents, Ralph and Elizabeth, brothers, Elmer, George and O’Ray; sisters, Esther, Ella and grandson, Adam.

In lieu of flowers that do not last, the family requests you call a parent, child or grandparent and make a memory that will last.

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our mom, gramma Nan, great gramma, and great-great gramma Annie Eunice Marjorie Rogers in Moosomin Hospital, on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at the age of 93 years young.

Family is a big part of Eunice’s legacy. Her heart was huge and she wrote, “I love my family dearly”, my grandkids, and my sons and daughters in law.

She always said no one child is more important than the next and that she loves us all the same. Mom thought we are “a great gang with lots of fun and laughter,” and was “proud of everyone.” Eunice is also survived by her sisters in law Phyllis and Sylvia Weatherald, her cousins, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Eunice was predeceased by her late husband George Rogers, her son Barry Rogers, and her infant daughter; her parents Connie and Lillian Weatherald; her brothers Peter Webb, Gerald, Don, and Lionel Weatherald; her sister Audrey Johnson; her brothers in law Les, Norman, and Wilf Rogers, her sisters in law Bessy Greenbank and Edith Rogers, as well as her son in law Wilf Kinney.

Eunice was born in Wawota, Saskatchewan on November 29, 1926 to Connie and Lillian Weatherald. She was raised in a log shack with her 3 brothers Gerald, Don, Lionel; and her sister Audrey. When her mother passed away Peter (Webb) was an infant, and Eunice and some of her family were moved into the Fernley Convent where she attained her schooling. It was there she studied and kept a watchful eye on her brothers and sister.

After leaving the convent she went to live with her father and sibling. One of her cousins tells stories of coming to play with the boys in her family and fondly remembers Eunice for her excellent meals and her kind demeanour. When Eunice was a teen she worked for her Aunt Emma and Uncle Elmer Smulan as their housekeeper.

It was there she met George Rogers who later become her husband. Eunice was 18 when she married George on December 5, 1944 in Wawota, Saskatchewan. He built her a little house on Railway Street and there they began to raise their family. They had ten children (5 girls, 5 boys) and as their family grew so did the need to expand their house.

Eunice was a hard worker and a caring mother. It was important for her to assure meals were on time, baking was done, clothes were made, washed, and in good repair all the while balancing the needs of her children to the best of her ability. We fondly remember coming home after school and being greeted by her warm smile, and the smell of freshly baked bread, homemade donuts, cakes and cooking. One of the important lessons mom taught us was the difference between wants and needs.

Eunice was a true matriarch, kept close watch over her children and made sure to have regular contact with her extended family and friends.

When her husband became ill Eunice gained employment at the Wawota Hospital.

There she advanced to the role of head cook and was oftentimes complimented on the meals she made. They were known to be nutritious, balanced and tasty. Eunice was employed there for 10 years before she retired.

Eunice and George loved to travel, be it on a family vacation or a trip to Alaska, across Canada, or into the States. Eunice was a social person and a sincere friend. She was a prudent shopper and a generous giver. During her later years Eunice gave much of her time to volunteer work for the United Church, and to the local thrift store where many churches in her community benefited. Mom could never sit idle. In the span of her lifetime she knit hundreds of pairs of mittens for her family, her friends, and for different charities.

Eunice and George were married for 62 years, and Eunice lived in the house that George built for 70 years. Last August, 2019 Eunice moved into the Maryfield Villa where she was very happy to enjoy the company of many of her life-long friends.

We will remember mom for her genuine love, kindness, for the many lessons in life she taught us. Eunice will never be forgotten by her friends and her family.

As a result of the restrictions regarding Covid -19, and the current government recommendations, a private family service, as per her request, will be held at a later date at the Fernley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Eunice may be made to The Wawota Lions Club.

Arrangements are in care of G.R. Carscadden Funeral Chapels, Moosomin, Sask.
