By Kelly Johnson The Observer Members of Carlyle’s Emergency Services teamed up on the evening of April 11 to raise the spirits of the residents of Carlyle and especially to show appreciation to the staff at the Moose Mountain Lodge. The convoy was led by Carlyle & R.M. #63 Fire and Rescue and was joined by Supreme Ambulance and Carlyle RCMP. tain Lodge, much to the delight of the staff and the residents, and then went on a whirlwind parade of the town. With lights flashing and sirens blaring, they were able to give those in the community a little excitement to break the boredom of having to spend Saturday night of the Easter weekend at home.

The workers at the Moose Mountain Lodge are very important frontline workers, who have a very demanding regimental work detail to perform. The Lodge is currently on lockdown to all visitors and the awareness of these essential workers and their con-

tribution are really under the radar when it comes to the vital service that they provide for the community’s seniors that reside at the care home.

At this time it is very important to stay connected and let others know that they are greatly appreciated for the effort they have been tasked with during these unprecedented times.

Making it a regular occurrence to call a friend or a neighbour, and/or showing goodwill and appreciation to frontline workers will do wonders to keep everyone’s spirits up and is a conception that will see all of us through the coming weeks or months.

Fire ravages through Manor homes

By Kelly Johnson The Observer On Wednesday, April 8 the village of Manor was the scene of a three alarm fire.

The fire started in the garage of a mobile home owned by Tracey Nelson and located on the southwest corner of the village. The home was being rented by Shane Hirtle and Kendra Selby.

The fire posed a difficult task to the fire crews as they were contending with a 40 km west wind, with gusts up to 70 km per hour. The occupants were in the home and called in the alarm at 11:27 a.m. The Manor Fire Department was on scene shortly thereafter.

proved to be very difficult and the Carlyle Fire Department was called almost immediately for backup, arriving on scene by 11:55 a.m.

The strong winds sent embers flying towards another home three lots east, resulting in a call to the Redvers Fire Department for additional backup.

The Manor Fire Department battled the original fire, while the Carlyle and Redvers Departments fought at the second location.

The heat from the original fire also caused damage to the home to the north, melting the siding. Firefighters were able to limit the damage to its exterior.

The second location also proved to be very se-

rious with the fire starting in the attic of that home. The embers likely entered the structure through the whirlybird roof vent. June Ariss, one of the occupants and who was home at the time, left the house to assess the situation that was unfolding down the street, was unaware that her place was also burning, as the heavy smoke seemed to appear to be coming from next door. She was soon approached by RCMP and asked to take the neighbour’s children dog and clear the area. It wasn’t until her husband, Darrell arrived, that they realized their home was also on fire.

The scene of the fire was attended to by 10 rescue units, over 30

firefighters, as well as members of the Carlyle RCMP and Supreme Ambulance personnel.

No injuries or loss of life occurred, however both homes are likely a total loss.

There will be an investigation to determine the exact cause of each of the fires and other homes in the area will be assessed for damages.

Manor Deputy Fire Chief Brayden Rowley had this to say, “We can’t stress enough how thankful we are that we are surrounded by other great fire departments like Carlyle and Redvers.

If we didn’t have them on Wednesday, I can easily say the outcome would have been much worse”.

Deputy Carlyle Fire Chief Travis Van Meer added, “I am really impressed how all the personnel handled it, keeping everyone safe and the way they all did their job. All the departments carry similar equipment, using same radios, training together really helped in this situation”.

Manor Fire Dept. and Carlyle Fire Dept. had been training together for approximately six months, all on their own time and as volun-

teers.

Due to the current world health pandemic, the Redvers & District Lions Club have made some adjustments to the current 2020-21 Trip of the Month Draws.

Until our public health officials deem it safe to be in public spaces while adhering to strict social and physical distancing measures, the monthly Trip of the Month raffle, which occurs at Affinity Credit Union with members of our club and their staff, will be suspended. When it is deemed safe to do so, we will resume our regular monthly draw schedule and make all missed draws at the same time.

Winners of all future prizes (trips) will be offered the cash alternative as usual, but if they choose to take the trip as awarded, the winner will be allowed an extension of up to 18 months from the date of winning to book their trip, given the current circumstances.

Should other unforeseen events regarding public travel, restrictions to travel, or health regulations affecting booking travel to the awarded destination, winners will be given the cash alternative for that trip.

Winners of trips from last year’s draw who chose to take the trip but have not yet booked will be contacted and offered the same choice as future winners.

Our place on earth Down a winding, well-maintained walking path connecting two charming campgrounds, sat a bit of a clearing in what was otherwise a densely treed area.

This clearing boasted all kinds of interesting grasses and flowers, and it was one of the stops on a walking tour where vacationers could learn more about the environment they were camping in.

My Outlook It was part of a program at Shelley Luedtke a campground in the Okanagan where my family visited each summer. The program included nature walks and evening presentations led by a naturalist who would come and speak about the plants and animals that were all around us. The best ones were the nature walks because as we moved along the trails the naturalist would stop and point out things that many of us would have otherwise missed.

I was a child when my family did this, but I can still remember the interpreter who led the program. Each summer I looked forward to hearing him because his stories were so good. Whether he was talking about bears in BC or moss along the trail, every piece of information was made more memorable by a personal anecdote. He was a gifted storyteller who could draw us into his narrative, and teach so much at the same time.

The clearing, which stands out for me, is the location where I believe I heard my first speech about the importance of caring for the environment. I can’t tell you the specifics of what was said, but even as a child I can remember the way he shared it. As we stood just feet from the lake, under the canopy of massive trees, next to a vast representation of berries, flowers and grasses, his passion for what was all around us was expressed in a way that inspired. Standing in the idyllic location certainly helped sell the message, but even more so it was his gentle nature. What he was saying mattered deeply to him, and he delivered it in a way that caused us to take note and listen carefully.

When I look back over those presentations I see now that it was some really good environmental education, and it was effective. By contrast, I admit I have little patience for what has passed for environmental conversations the last number of years, largely because we’ve left discussion in the dust and traded it for shouting down and shutting out opposing points of view.

It is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, marked each year on April 22 in more than 190 countries.

It will take on a different look this year, but then again, the earth has taken on a different look, too.

How we live has been altered drastically—and it shows. We’ve seen how air quality, waterways and wildlife patterns have been impacted by the change in human activity. Once we get back to life as we used to know it, that might change. But it doesn’t have to. Imagine that we draw on all the things we’ve experienced and take those lessons into how we resume living; reminding ourselves that we can get by with much, much less. That we don’t need to travel at the drop of a hat. That simpler things in life shine far brighter than any bling and glitz ever could. That nothing we think we need to accumulate offers anything that lasts. Of course it’s far more complex and bigger than just that, but ultimately it starts with the individual and the way we choose to live.

As we approach the first-ever digital earth day, maybe it could also be the start of a new way to have the conversation. Instead of the finger pointing and blame game; instead of the good guys versus bad guys; instead of the slogans and placards; so much more could be achieved if we each took another look at what we are doing and how it impacts the environment we all share responsibility for. No activist will ever get my attention the way a walk in the woods did with someone who wanted nothing more than for others to see what he was seeing.

That’s my outlook.

A light at the end of the tunnel

By Jordan Stricker, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Finally, for the first time since the COVID-19 crisis hit Saskatchewan, we have seen some sort of glimmer at the end of a long dark tunnel.

While we may still be a long ways away from being able to post up in our favourite watering holes with our friends and talk about the times we lived in, wearing sweat pants for weeks at a time, the past week has shown that Saskatchewan’s measures, lead by chief medical health officer Dr. Saqib Shahab, are paying some, even if they are mild, dividends.

There were multiple days in the past week where Saskatchewan saw more recoveries than new cases, a first since we heard about the virus hitting the province on March 12.

The week of April 6-10 saw a rise of 31 confirmed cases, followed by 55 people who recovered from the virus. While Saskatchewan’s numbers remain low in comparison to the rest of Canada, the people of Saskatchewan have come together and made that happen.

Understanding that this virus is bigger than all of us and making the necessary life changes to save everyone around us, is the key to beating this virus the people of this province are taking seriously.

Like Premier Scott Moe has said many times over the last few weeks, everyone who is doing their part with the restrictions laid out by the province, is saving lives.

To date, Saskatchewan has three deaths from COVID-19. Loss of life is never something anyone wants to hear about, but in comparison with the rest of the nation, our numbers are miniscule.

Saskatchewan is only second to Nova Scotia, who has reported two deaths as of April 9.

All of the positives mentioned above could change overnight. By the time you are reading this, we could have severely gone the other direction. But, for once during this pandemic, we should try and focus on some positives.

Saskatchewan people have a reason to remain scared of COVID-19. We are not out of the woods yet. We are possibly far from it.

But remaining hopeful is paramount. The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) released their response plan models this week, and it struck fear in many to say the least.

The models showed three different scenarios based on how many people one could infect, and

what those numbers reflect. The SHA reiterated these models are “what if scenarios.”

According to the SHA, in a high-range estimate, 4,265 COVID-19 patients will require to be in acute care hospital simultaneously. Of those hospitalized, 1,280 COVID-19 patients will be in the ICU with 9095 per cent requiring ventilation.

On the low side, the SHA presentation said at peak, 390 patients will require to be in an acute care hospital simultaneously. Of those hospitalized, 120 patients will be in the ICU with 90-95 per cent requiring ventilation.

The presentation said on the high end of the model, the province could see up to 408,000 total cases with 215 ICU admissions daily and a cumulative total of 8,370 deaths. On the low end, 153,000 total cases with 20 ICU admissions daily and up to 3,075 deaths.

According to the SHA, the current demand for daily ICU across Saskatchewan is 57 beds with 98 total capacity. For acute care, there is a daily demand of 1,396 with a total capacity of 2,433.

In addition, the SHA currently has 450 ventilators available to meet COVID-19 model demands for low and mid-range scenarios. The planned capacity ventilator requirement of 860 creates a gap of 410, but the SHA added there are confirmed orders for 200 with 100 expected n the next two to three weeks.

These numbers show if a surge were to hit Saskatchewan, our healthcare system would rip at the seams. The number of ventilators needed in the province to combat the event of a massive surge are just not there. That is disappointing and scary.

The SHA said in a media release sent out on April 9, they have “approximately one month or more supply of most essential personal protective equipment items.”

Those items include surgical masks, N95 respirators and gloves. They added they “continue to purchase and aggressively pursue supply” which doesn’t mean much when the entire world is looking for the same things.

In the words of Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu, “Hope is being able to see that there is a light despite all of the darkness.”

All we can do is continue to do what we are doing. Tell everyone you know, if you haven’t already, they are the key to getting us out of a situation our health system clearly isn’t prepared to handle.

Local RCMP detachment place Hearts in the Window

By Kelly Johnson The Observer “Hearts in the Windows” is an acclamation from the Facebook group called the Heart Movement.

The local Carlyle RCMP is showing appreciation for area essential workers by hanging hearts in the windows of the detachment in Carlyle. Detachments across the country are also participating in this show of support for the Facebook group.

“Hanging the hearts are to show the public and remind them that we are all in this together,” constable Dani Zaya explains.

“The purpose is to keep everyone connected, so everyone knows their effort will effectively bring us all through this together”.

“It serves as a focal point to the detachment members and staff of the greater cause that everyone is a part of”.

The display is one more way people are reaching out to each other, showing those people working in essential positions, “that it is critical to society to continue to function” and through these stressful times they are being thought of.

We truly appreciate it. There are others, who, due to lack of forethought, or, due to ignorance, make life more difficult. Remember the more we work together now, the better it will be for all of us later. For those of you that “Get it”, thank you.

Just because you think it is necessary to travel it does not mean others will.

• You may notice more Police visibility. This is due to the fact we are trying to ensure our communities know we are still out and about.

• Life has changed for all of us. I listen to a lot less talk radio and a lot more music, mainly due to every subject appears to relate to or be associated to Covid-19. If you care to know, I prefer 80’s, music, however, some of the new stuff is not bad, not bad at all. Netflix is a go to in our household and our suggestion would be, I am not sure if I can put titles in the paper so the sitcom about the Korean convenience store, then there is the one about Feline Royalty . . . enough said. If you have not delved into it . . . I, well . . . it sucks you in. It is not child-friendly due to language and, like I said it sucks you in.

• Now back to what we have been up to. Members continue to be kept occupied with Mental Health

and Child Welfare calls. We believe there have been less alarms due to the fact most people are staying home but we are still getting false alarms, 911 static and 911 mistakenly dialed. Now, if you dial 911 by mistake, remember, it is for emergencies. I only say this because we will not act as directory and you will have to call the proper number to obtain directory. I know this apparently annoys some people, however, we are not obligated, nor should we be expected to provide you a number that you are looking for. Just saying.

• As stated, some people get it and others don’t.

There are less people driving around, however, many of those that are driving around appear to be trying to take advantage of the decreased traffic. Many are being stopped for speeding and stops sign violations.

As much as Police Officers have concerns for their health, we also have a responsibility to make our roads safe and by now we should all realize that we cannot afford to burden any of our medical facilities with injuries due to collisions. Thus, we have to keep doing our duty and stopping violators.

• We still find ourselves, however, having to warn individuals about the regulations as it relates to Covid-19. We appreciated those in the communities that are contacting us with their concerns so we can provide a warning and so far, we have found the one warning is sufficient. This is serious and we need to treat it as serious.

• Members responded to an assault, which appears to be a gathering involving alcohol and drugs

that resulted in a possible physical confrontation.

Child Welfare was contacted due to children being present. Our investigation is continuing.

• An intoxicated individual was causing concerns at a residence. The individual was arrested and in the process chose to be combative with the Members. The individual was lodged and Members used discretion as it relates to not charging the individual for resisting arrest.

• A similar call to a residence, also involving drugs and alcohol, resulted in a TV being damaged. Our investigation continues and the fact the TV was damaged appears to be the biggest concern.

• If you choose to go knock on a door close to midnight, expect the occupant to be a little less than impressed. If that occupant happens to be a Police Officer and you have chosen to knock on their door expecting them to do Police work for you, well, expect the “Off Duty” Police Officer to be less than impressed. Use your phone and call in the complaint so that “On Duty” Members can respond. As much as we often do go above and beyond when off duty we have to expect to get some time off and being awoken by someone expecting, well, as stated the Member was not impressed.

Brody Knelsen of Carlyle won’t soon forget his 9th birthday. On April 4 his Novice hockey teammates, Carlyle RCMP and the Sports Arena Zamboni (driven by arena caretaker Brent Stillwell), surprised Brody with a “birthday parade”, complete with balloons, signs, sirens and shouts of “Happy Birthday Brody”! A great idea during this uncertain time.

From Page 5 - RCMP report • Two vehicles were vandalized at a residence.

We have involved our Forensic Identification Section out of Yorkton to assist. Unfortunately, the keys to the one vehicle were left within the vehicle and they were stolen. We believe this to be linked to another vandalism to a vehicle. Our investigations are continuing.

• A traffic stop was conducted due to the operator of the vehicle being observed without a seatbelt. The driver was determined to be suspended and on conditions of no contact with the passenger of the vehicle. They were given a ticket for the seatbelt offence, given a court date for driving while suspended and for breaching their release conditions. Sometimes I think the Criminal’s want to be caught.

• An individual had been given the opportunity to serve their sentence in the community. They have since breached the conditions of their release twice and I would suggest if they do it again they, will find themselves sent to a correctional facility. I am certain if it was not for Covid-19 they would be in custody already.

• Letting youth utilize cannabis or alcohol in your residence, your shop or any place is not a good judgment call. It is further aggravated by the fact with Covid-19 we are supposed to be distancing ourselves from others.

• It is the time of the year where the farmers are out and about. Please remember they have big equipment and you drive a small vehicle. Now to our farmers please ensure you are moving the equipment in a proper manner.

• Our local volunteer firefighters are still going above and beyond as are many first responders.

They attended a vehicle fire over the past week.

• Please monitor what your children are doing on social media and ensure they are not in contact with someone they should not be or on sites they should not be. In addition be careful yourself the on line orders are not always what they appear. Our Detachment recently made an order for some equipment.

We received a return call and were to be provided extra product which, really who does not like free stuff. We then got a call later requesting information on how to pay for the extra product that we need to purchase to acquire the free product. We said “Nay, nay.”

• Now, if you are a victim of a crime and think we are not doing an adequate job please bring it to our

attention. One of the supervisors will look into your concern. It is not your job, however, to investigate and confront suspects when we are actively investigating your concerns. In this incident a warning for harassment was provided to the individual doing their own investigation.

• An individual reported that due to work they were going to be late with their curfew. We figured if the individual is working and they contacted us, we would use discretion.

• Members responded to a serious collision involving two individuals that were ejected from the vehicle they had been occupying. RCMP Reconstruction Specialists assisted with the investigation as did our RCMP Canine Unit being we were uncertain how many occupants had been in the vehicle.

Both occupants were transported to Regina, one via STARS. Our investigation is continuing, however, it appears that alcohol, speed and lack of seatbelt use were all factors.

• If someone calls about you driving impaired and you get caught and then later, you choose to get revenge by calling about them driving impaired, well, we will roll with that. Unfortunately, we did not locate the alleged impaired driver on this occasion.

We expect another call from the revenge caller in the future.

• It always surprises me how often people slow down, then drift through a stop sign. It would be quicker to stop and then proceed but some people just can’t obey the law. It takes longer, and puts one at risk to get a ticket, however, they continue to slow and drive through the stop sign.

• Members issued approximately 10 tickets and 25 warnings over the past week.

• Tickets were issued for fail to wear a seatbelt $175, inadequate mudflaps or fenders -$115, fail to produce a drivers licence - $100 and speeding with the most expensive speeding ticket being for $292.

• Warnings were issued for operator of an ATV fail to wear a helmet, fail to stop at stop sign, fail to produce a drivers licence, fail to produce registration, operate unregistered motor vehicle, inadequate headlamps, inadequate windshield, fail to wear seatbelt and speeding.

• Although we are trying not to give out inspection notices some times we have no choice. A vehicle was given a light vehicle inspection due to the Members concern for the road worthy state of the vehicle.

He was the 6th of 9 children raised on the family farm and continued living on the original homestead of 1889 until the day he passed away peacefully on April 5th, 2020 at the Wawota Deer View Lodge with his family by his side.

Tom will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years Irene (Hutchinson); 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 3 step grandchildren. Kevin (Kim) Dorrance (Jordan, Sydney, Brock); Heather (Steve) Sombach (Jackson, Carson, Rylar, Connor, Matt); Brenda Morgan (Austin, Brandon, Lana); Leanne (Ken) Vaughan (Mackenna, Lindsay); Trent (Janelle) Dorrance (Tyren, Brody, Caden); as well as his siblings and in-laws, Elsie Allan, Annie Easton, Kay Dorrance, Margaret Guillaume, Clair (Lorna) Dorrance, Marion (Harvey) Goehring, Edith (Darryl) Russell, Grace Hutchinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Tom is predeceased by his parents Stanley and Ferne Dorrance; in-laws Sydney and Mabel (Surridge) Hutchinson; siblings Aleita (Tom White and Ewald Prince), Mary (Sam) McClure, Joe Dorrance, Winnie (Carmen) Kent and brother in law Peter Guillaume and Ray Allan.

Tom attended school at Highview and then continued his education obtaining a diploma in Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. Tom was always interested in cattle and purchased his �irst purebred Hereford in 1941 at the age of 10. Tom, with his brother Joe, took over the farm in 1951 and then later continued farming with his oldest son Kevin. Tom has witnessed many changes of farming throughout his lifetime, from the use of horses to the automatic use of tractors today.

Tom has participated and held numerous positions within many Agricultural Associations including Director and President of the Saskatchewan and Canadian Hereford Association. He showed and judged extensively including such shows as the Toronto Royal Fair and Canadian Western Agribition since the inception 49 years ago. In 1990 one of Tom’s greatest honours came when he was inducted into the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll; as well this past Agribition Tom received a prestigious award of 75 years of raising Hereford cattle.

Tom enjoyed raising cattle and being on the farm but mostly loved being with family and doing many activities such as hosting family gatherings, �ishing, cards, games, and watching any sports the grandchildren were a part of. Family was Tom’s greatest love.

Tom’s cheerful and friendly spirit will be missed by all who know and love him. A service to celebrate Tom’s life will be held at a later date.

Hope everyone had a nice quiet Easter – it was definitely a different one this year, nice to have a change but surely do hope this won’t be the norm.

Also hope that the Easter bunny found your house, here he did leave a few chocolate eggs around (but not like in past) – ha ha, I really don’t need any at all, but gosh they do taste good.

I became a little bored the other day so I dug into my puzzle pile and pulled out a puzzle. Dumped out the pieces and sorted them and began to put the edge pieces together. Now the only thing wrong with this is that once I get started I don’t want to quit until the puzzle is complete. After sitting most of the

day I finally did finish it and now I sit back and look at it for a few days before I break it up and put it away.

We also went for a drive around the area checking for some signs of spring – did see that the little pussy willows are beginning to stick their little white noses out along their branches. However did not notice any crocuses yet, must be too cold, as I believe the ground is still a bit froze. Once these pretty little flowers are out, spring will surely be here. There are lots of birds around now, saw some robins, crows and lot and lots of geese. Also saw a few little calves out in the pasture with the cows – oh they are so

Sympathy to the family and friends of the late Tom Dorrance. He passed away at Deer View Lodge on Apr. 5 at the age of 88 years. He was born in Highview District where he lived all of his life. He and brother Joe started a Purebred Hereford business and their animals were known throughout Canada.

He leaves wife, Irene and family Kevin, Heather, Brenda, Leanne and Trent and their families. A funeral will be held at a later date.

The Wawota Library has put on two events to help pass the time. On Apr. 8 they had a screening of the documentary, “Open Secrets” to mark the International Day of Pink. The film highlights the stories of 5 veterans and how the Armed Forces dealt with

homosexual behavior among soldiers during and after WWII. The program was online and the discussion after was on the app Zoom.

The second program was the Easter Egg Hunt, Apr. 6 to 10. The Library Board and librarians worked together to plan the hunt, keeping in mind social distancing. There were nine coloured Easter eggs placed in windows around town. There were 17 participants and Ace Hamilton was the winner of a book and a giant Easter bunny.

Some parents are thinking of novel ways to help their kids celebrate birthdays. At one house colored cement chalk was put out and well-wishers were asked to come by and write birthday wishes. Another asked for people to honk their horns as they drove by the house at a specific time.

cute running around out there. Good luck guys with your calf crop this spring. When we drove through town, the streets were abandoned not a vehicle to be seen. Reminded me of a saying that my father-inlaw would often say – “You could shoot a cannon off down Main Street and not hit a thing.”

Well folks as we all seem to be following the rules set out by the authorities to continue to selfisolate and keep a physical distance may we soon see a slowdown and improvement with this pandemic.

Sometimes it seems unfair, when one can’t visit and have a cup of coffee with family members or a dear friend – but hey it’s still better to be safe than sorry.

I’d hate to see someone become ill just because I didn’t follow a few rules. So in the meantime – Keep Your Distance – Stay Healthy – Be Safe and Take Care we WILL get through this together.

Dunn Transport lends a “hauling hand”

By Kelly Johnson The Observer Dunn Transport of Carlyle has added hauling groceries to the list of products they deliver.

Primarily they haul fuel from Federated Co-operatives, Ltd (FCL), but now have added hauls of groceries between Regina and Saskatoon and points in- between, even doing a haul to the Southern Plains Co-op in Carlyle.

A couple months ago Dunn Transport made a sales call to Federated Co-op about any added business that they could do for the company. The well came up dry at the time.

FCL tends to work mostly with lease operators that fly the Co-op colours and do not use

common carriers unless in a time of need.

Co-op has seen a surge in grocery sales at this time, as has most food stores, with people stocking their pantries due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Getting enough stock from the warehouse to stores has provided a new challenge for many companies, in order to maintain a good supply for consumers. Some companies are also short of drivers impacted by selfquarantine rules.

Having had recently requested more loads from FCL the timing worked out well and they now have four trucks running regular hauls.

Forward planning is part of the business continuity plan at Federated and

they have loads for the foreseeable future.

Dunn’s primary business has been hauling fuel from the Co-op Refinery in Regina to points in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan and have at times into Montana and North Dakota, USA. The extra business does come with its challenges though, as the company needs to supply PPE (personal protective equipment) to maintain the protection of the drivers and the groceries they are moving.

Dunn Transport has been a local carrier operating out of Carlyle since inception and will celebrate 70 years of business in the community in 2021.

Future of markets a concern to farmers

By Calvin Daniels It’s sometimes easy to forget how interconnected commodity markets are.

Farm producers are generally aware that the price of oil tends to drive the overall market trend, with it certainly impacting farm inputs, both in the case of direct fuel costs, and the price of some fertilizers.

With Russia and Saudi Arabia fighting over share of the global oil, market prices plummeted, and the situation has been made worse as demand dipped massively in the face of COVID-19 reducing needs internationally.

So the current disaster that is the world of international oil prices is not all bad news for farmers.

Last fall producers were generally hit with added costs to dry grain, meaning a hefty propane or natural gas bill for most.

This spring they may see the lowest fuel costs

in years as they head to the field to plant their crops.

But oil prices are more than direct savings, or higher prices to fill the fuel tank on the tractor or farmers.

For example there has been a continuing market for grains going into the ethanol sector. It has not been the market once envisioned when ethanol was going to be the answer to the then exorbitant oil prices, but there has remained a niche.

Niche markets by their nature can be overrun rather easily, and when crude oil prices are at levels not seen in decades – some suggest below $20 a barrel for the first quarter of 2020, ethanol becomes a rather redundant fuel source.

Thankfully the ethanol market is not a massive one for grain sales to access, but it is likely a market that will be lost in the immediate months ahead, and whether it ever rebounds to rele-

vance in the short-terms is a question mark.

Producers are likely not lamenting the potential market loss in the short term. The COVID-19 pandemic is going to keep food demand strong, provided the infrastructure to get product from farm gate to production mill to the consumer table holds up.

At this point we should believe the system will manage, at least in developed countries where systems are generally better.

So the demand for what farmers produce should hold at least steady, with increases in some area, such as wheat flour in North America as consumers safeguard their home food supply by stocking up on nonperishable items.

How the markets play out amid the oil market battle and COVID-19 of course is the question hanging over farm producers headed to the fields to plant a new crop.
