Kenosee Superslides open to the public again By David Willberg and Kelly Johnson It was a week that Harvey and Jan Armstrong, owners of the Kenosee Superslides, won’t soon forget. The popular attraction north of Carlyle was notified by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) late on Aug. 20 that it would have to close, after the SHA deemed the facility structurally unsafe for public use. The Superslides shut down on Aug. 21, but was notified in the afternoon of Aug. 25 that it could open again, after the SHA showed up and gave the Superslides the OK to reopen much of its park. The first day back was Aug. 26. Jan Armstrong kept the public updated with a series of videos during the closure, starting with sombre videos Aug. 21 and 22, and then a highly upbeat video on Aug. 25 when he announced the reopening. The banzai slide, the twister slides and the kiddie slides were allowed to reopen, but the tube slides were not. “Hopefully we’re going to get some more information about that later in the week, and when I find out, I’ll let you know,” Jan Armstrong said. Doug Dahl, a spokesperson with the SHA, said the agency has granted a probation-

ary licence to the Superslides for the operation of specific slides within the park. The owner has been informed of the terms of the probationary licence. Late last week, Dahl said the SHA had cancelled the operational license for public health and safety reasons, although specifics weren’t given. In the video on Aug. 21, Armstrong said the accusation was “unwarranted,” and based on the feeling of an individual rather “documented evidence of an expert or a waterslide specialist.” The Superslides initially cancelled the morning session on Aug. 21, but that was extended into the weekend and then this week. “Our park was one of the safest water parks in Canada last year. The numbers prove it,” said Armstrong, who apologized repeatedly in the first video. He also thanked those who have supported them in the past few days. In the second video, Armstrong noted that nobody from the government is in their office or answering phone calls, so there’s nothing they could do until early this week. Any tickets from the closure will be refunded. After last week’s closure occurred, a petition was launched on the change.org website, call-

The Kenosee Superslides is able to start welcoming patrons again, after it was closed for five days recently by the Saskatchewan Health Authority. File photo ing for the Superslides to open again. It attracted 4,572 signatures before the slides were reopened. Kenneth Sibbald, who started the petition, said staff members at the Superslides work long, hard hours keeping up the slides to avoid injuries and keep people safe. “The slides are not only a water park, local businesses count on the tourism to bring money into the area. Thousands of people come every year and now those businesses have had those tourism dollars cut off.” The Armstrongs have been vigilant when it comes to safety. The water park had its equipment and slides inspected by members

of a structural engineering firm, at the request of the owners, last summer, and no problems or recommendations had been identified at that time. The Kenosee Superslides had a late start to the 2020 season in late July due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since that time, they have been limited to 150 people in the facility at a time, so they are open for fourhour sessions starting at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. There has also been enhanced cleaning efforts at the site. Their season is expected to end Sept. 7. The water park had met all provisions set out by the SHA in order to open due to the pandemic restrictions.

Jan Armstrong is excited that people can start visiting the Kenosee Superslides once again. File photo Normally the Superslides would have more than 7,000 people pass through its gates in a week, but now it has just over 2,000 people

per week. It attracts people from throughout the province and across Canada, and in a normal year, has a high number of visitors from the U.S.
