Milagra Ridge is a beautiful nature trail and preserved area that prioritizes natural beauty above all. On this trail you can find many indigenous plants and animals as you walk along the edge of a sea-side cliff that juts down into the Pacific Ocean.
There are many different trail options to choose, most leading back to the same starting point as they connect and loop around. The longest of these trails is the Milagra Summit Trail with a distance of 0.8 miles and the shortest for a quick view is the Spur Trail with a distance of 0.2 miles. Pets are permitted to join you on your excursion as long as they are leashed and bicycles are permitted on paved paths only.
Fun Fact:
Native butterflies are given a protected breeding ground that can be seen just off the trail.
The history of Milagra ridge is vast as it was originally inhabited by the Ohlone people for thousands of years.
In the 1930’s the United States Army made use of this area by mounting several 6-inch guns
to defend the San Francisco Bay, they were later removed in the late 1940’s. In 1956, the Nike Missile Site was established here as protection during the Cold War. Remnants of these bunkers still sit on the ridge today, covered in graffiti.

Rockaway Beach is a small patch of sand with local shops, dining, nightlife, and hotels nearby. At the Rockaway Beach Trail you can hike up a steep, narrow, and rocky trail that elevates you about 337 feet at its highest point. The trail is open year round and boasts a clear view of the Pacific Ocean directly beneath you at the bottom of a steep rocky cliff. It is a more advanced yet safe hike and dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash. The length of the
trail is 2.5 miles and takes about an hour and five minutes to reach the end. The trail is also an amazing spot to view boulders larger than yourself. As you get further along you will pass through what appears to be a crack in the mountain about 20 feet tall. It has been caused by years of run off water during the rainy season. Just on the other side, rocks in concentric circles placed by previous hikers can be seen (pictured to the right).
Fun Fact:
This trail is home to many indigenous species such as the Great Egret pictured above.
5 Coastal Delights
The view as you travel down the Rockaway Beach Trail atop a cliffFrontierland Park is a wooded area that sits inland of this beachy town. Compared to other trails in this booklet, Milagra Ridge and Rockaway Beach Trail, this is on open space with abundant grass and trees. There are many amenities that make this a great space for family friendly events. Included are horseshoe pits, a large playground with unique play structures including a child sized ghost town, barbecue pits, and several individual picnic tables.
Towards the outskirts of the park is a woodland area that contains a manmade staircase that leads up into the woods. The stairs have since been overgrown by nature, however taking them up as far as you can gives an interesting view into the natural state of the California coast’s vegetation.
For those who enjoy exercise, you can visit the fitness area that houses a crossfit-like atmosphere made as a permanent metal fixture in the park. With seven stations to
exercise your whole body, the whole family can have a reason to enjoy this peaceful park in beautiful Pacifica, California.
