The recent haze phenomenon that has hit our country has caused health issues and economy slow down as it has also affected the tourism and agriculture industries. Therefore, it is essential for landscape architects to ensure we encourage a sustainable approach to life, by minimising waste production, recycling, and also practicing the urban farming approach to ensure food security. In landscape design, clever and innovative concepts and planning can reduce the effect of air pollution and ensure we breathe cleaner air, hence, in this issue, we showcase some of the creative projects in Malaysia that have adopted this concept in living spaces and work environments. In the past year, Malaysia has also experienced natural disasters, such as floods and earthquakes. We at ILAM have lined up a number of activities regarding these issues, namely the ILAM-MGBC Seminar on Mitigating Disaster in Landscape Architecture Design, to be held on 5 November 2015. The ILAM Sabah Chapter has also organised their humanitarian programme, entitled “Rebuilding Ranau”. This project aims to install water tanks in the villages in Ranau, Sabah, to ensure they have access to clean water, following the earthquake that hit the district in May 2015. The report can be found in this issue. Fast forward to 2016 and we have already lined up our major events so that you can plan your personal schedule. We hope we will see you soon at the upcoming ILAM events and that you will continue to support ILAM in all our endeavours. DESIGN with nature In 1969, the famous Ian McHarg, a Scottish landscape architect, published “Design with Nature”, which was essentially a book of step-by-step instructions on how to break down a region into its appropriate uses. “Design With Nature” was the first work of its kind to define the problems of modern development and present a methodology or process prescribing compatible solutions. Today, his publication, and design approach, still serve as strong principles to follow in every aspect of landscape architectural design. This article hopes to inspire you with a number of Malaysia Landscape Architecture Award winning projects that demonstrate the McHarg “Design with Nature” approach.
Sunway Rymba Hills Sunway Rymba Hills is the first low-density residential development in Malaysia with private forest parks growing beside thriving luxury homes. Hailed for its unique zero-lot concept, the 80 units of forest villas are planned in the most ecological manner; sensitive to the existing hilly terrain. Rymba Hills embodies the tranquility of the ‘Coming Home to Nature’ concept. Stretching over 19.72 acres, this site embodies unique landscape features interwoven with one another. With the healthy lifestyle in mind, the planning incorporated an existing forest park as the back bone of the development, providing numerous outdoor spaces for residents to explore. The whole development is seamlessly connected with jogging and cycling pathways which link all the green patches available within this green development enclave.

Following the Natural Terrain Rymba Hills is designed to suit the existing contour and hilly terrain to achieve a low environmental impact and seamlessly blend the indoor and outdoor landscaped spaces. Dedicated to Nature The planning and design of the entire development is in fact dedicated to nature by enhancing its values and functions. Of the 60% of the green spaces available here, half is a forest park, while the remaining portion is turned into linear gardens, herb and orchard gardens, lawns and playing fields.
Environmental Friendly Features The clubhouse is the main feature of green innovation with energy saving ideas. Plants cascade down the faรงade of the building, providing a cooling effect and reducing heat within the interior, thus reducing energy consumption. An environmentally friendly fibre composite timber deck is used in lieu of timber to promote sustainability. Material Selections Most of the garden and forest paths incorporate permeable materials such as an expended metal deck, pre-cast slabs and recycled railway sleepers to ensure the hardscape has minimal effect on forest growth. The elevated metal trails above the forest floor also allow surface water runoff and keep the trail dry at all times.
Residents can also enjoy herb gardens, with clear labelling and usage, and medicinal values. Composting bins are also provided near the gardens to dispose of organic waste which becomes the fertilizer for the gardens. Some of the mature trees are also being transplanted within the site and are now the main feature of the development.

Low Carbon Initiatives Cycling paths are connected to ensure residents use the bicycle or walk to reach the different facilities within Rymba Hills. Security personnel here are also equipped with bicycles for their routine patrolling.

BREAKING AWAY FROM THE NORM
Point 92 is a stunning piece of architecture that marries environmental sensibility and aesthetics. This office building, although compact in size, makes a huge statement, design-wise. The view from the terrace alone is enough to make a weary worker smile.

Breaking away from the norm Point 92 is an office building of 14 floors, named for the 0.92 acre site on which it is located. Due to the humble site size, there was a need to maximize the architectural floor space. This resulted in limited outdoor spaces reserved mainly for driveways, drop off, and service roads. Therefore, the landscape needed to maximise the effects of greenery within a very limited space. The concept and theme of the project was: • To craft a distinctive office building with a unique character, using simple local materials and construction methods. •
Emphasise a strong connection with nature, in order to create a comfortable and productive working environment.
•
Be environmentally- friendly and energy-efficient.
Greening the Common Space Generous green spaces, high ceilings, a play of different raw materials, dramatically hooded windows bring different layers of natural lighting into the lobby. This is how the design elevates the green spaces with maximum impact. 600 saplings of local forest species, under-planted with ferns along the planter, run from the arrival court to the office lobby. These saplings were planted close to one another to recreate a forest environment. Benches, extruding from a series of steps leading towards the lobby, provide office users or visitors a comfortable outdoor seating area under the canopy. Saplings also act as a ‘green’ backdrop for the glazed office lobby. They help to screen off busy traffic from the adjacent road and also help to reduce heat from the morning sun.
Connecting People with Nature This project is a showcase of how landscaping can enhance the work environment. The major effort of this project is to connect people with nature. This green oasis creates a very pleasant environment for tenants and visitors. It is also a very comfortable and refreshing space where workers can be seen all day – sitting, relaxing, and exchanging ideas. In addition, there are two sky gardens at Level 5 and 7, which provide further connections to nature for the tenants. Furthermore, several varieties of creepers are grown from planter boxes on the 7 levels carpark, creating a huge screen of vertical landscaping within this 0.92 acres of office space.

time when life was simple and people lived close to nature, in a safe, supportive neighbourhood. Set in tranquil green surroundings on a 1,879 acre site, Bandar Rimbayu set to be an iconic mixed development of residential, commercial, recreational and parkland components.
Close to Nature, Awakening the Senses In all four precincts planned in Bandar Rimbayu, the design will capture and sustain the natural topography and terrain of the site. In bringing nature closer for everyday living, the natural surrounding habitat will remain relatively untouched. So that waking up to birdsongs, enjoying nature walks and cycling amid indigenous vegetation are pleasures that take nothing away from the environment. More than 50,000 trees, palms, shrubs, flower garden, aquatic plants, herbs and climbers were planted around “The Arc”, another green move that affirms developer commitment to greening the environment. At the most fundamental level, “The Arc” provides shelter for community activities and functions as a place for social and recreational activities, communal and sports events. User friendly details of the park are carefully and skillfully designed to cater to the users of all ages, thus creating a safe atmosphere within the compound.

Long Lasting Impression One aspect to the landscape is to create a setting that is lush and green for “The Arc” to connect with the overall concept of Bandar Rimbayu. It is the planting that created an iconic impression to each visitors who has visited here. The Vernonia elliptica creepers that can be seen growing on “The Arc” canopy acts as a signature element to Bandar Rimbayu, with trees that can be seen penetrating through the building canopy from the ground floor towards the upper level of green open spaces.

Morning Session: Playpoint Talk Playpoint Malaysia once again hosted a half day talk entitled: “Designing Modern Playscapes” in Kuala Lumpur, in conjunction with the ILAM Annual General Meeting 2014/2015, which was held at DoubleTree at The Intermark, Kuala Lumpur. The talk was attended by more than 100 participants from ILAM and related industries. During the session, speaker Andreas Aschmann presented his design ideas about “Designing Modern Playscapes” for different age group users, while Ron Asveld spoke about innovative outdoor play equipment, designed in Europe, via his topic “Live Outdoors, Forever Green”. The two and a half hour talk concluded with lunch where participants were free to mingle and socialise before the afternoon ILAM AGM session began.
Aftrenoon Session: ILAM Annual General Meeting 2014/2015 ILAM President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, opened the session with his welcoming speech. The Annual General Meeting was attended by more than 189 members (110 Corporate Members, 78 Graduate Members and 1 Associate Member). The highlight of the AGM was the certificate presentation to 34 new ILAM Corporate Members year 2015, who had excelled in the ILAM Professional Examination in March 2015.

ILAM SABAH CHAPTER HUMANITARIAN PROGRAMME
rebuilding ranau, sabah 17 October 2015 Kampung Pinausok, Ranau, Sabah The 2015 Sabah earthquake struck Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia, with a magnitude of 6.0 on 5 June, and lasted for 30 seconds. The earthquake was the strongest to hit Malaysia since 1976 and badly affected the people in Ranau and Kota Belud badly. Beside the damage to buildings and other structures, the locals were also hurt by the disconnection of clean water supplies, due to the destroyed and polluted water sources. Following this, ILAM Sabah Chapter initiated a humanitarian programme, ‘Rebuilding Ranau”, which is intended to restore the water supply at Kampung Pinausok, Kundasang at Ranau District on 17 October 2015. The programme started with an online donation drive to collect funds for the humanitarian programme, followed by the work to install 10 water tanks with the combined capacity of 4,000 gallons, which would be able to supply between 5-10 families for about 2-3 days, with the water source channeled from the nearby river. This programme was organised successfully by our dedicated ILAM Sabah Chapter members, coordinated by LAr. Rozie Khan and jointly attended by ILAM Vice President, LAr. Sabarudin Buang and council members, along with the support of former IFLA Asia Pacific President, Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah. More than 22 ILAM members worked hand in hand with the locals to complete the installation of the water tanks. Besides that, the participants also visited “Ground Zero” in Kampung Mesilou, and Kampung Cinta Mata, to fully understand the impact of the earthquake.

52ndIFLA World Congress 2015 Date: 10-12 June 2015 Venue: St. Petersburg, Russia For the first time in the history of the IFLA World Congress, this 52nd Congress was held in St. Petersburg, Russia. With its extensive natural, semi-natural and man-made landscapes, the dramatic story of the region gave the attendees a glimpse of amazing examples of revitalisation and reconstruction of ‘lost’ landscapes. Themed, “History of the Future”, the congress catered for a wide range of interests, yet focused on the challenges and opportunities of the past, the present, and the future, for landscape architecture and landscape architects. ILAM was represented by Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah, who was also IFLA Asia Pacific Chairman at the IFLA World Council Meeting in Moscow. The 3-day congress was filled with keynote speeches, parallel sessions, poster sessions and technical tours. Fringe activities included an international student charrette and competition phase.
IFLA Asia Pacific Congress 2015 Date: 7-9 September 2015 Venue: Mataram, Lombok, Indonesia The IFLA Asia Pacific Congress 2015, was held in conjunction with a celebration of 200 years since the largest volcanic eruption was recorded in modern civilised history. The eruption of Mount Tambora created new landscapes, buried three kingdoms, killed over 17,000 people, and produced global anomalies of climate and political impact. In line with this, the congress theme, “The Future of Mountain and Volcanoscape”, provided a platform for landscape architects to collaborate with other professions. The aim is to help societies to achieve attractive, equitable and sustainable environments for the future. The IFLA Asia Pacific Council Meeting was held on the 6 September 2015, and was attended by ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, and ILAM official delegate, LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail. During the meeting, ILAM presented the endorsement proposal of Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) to the IFLA Asia Pacific Council Members and we are delighted to announce that MLAA is now officially recognised by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA).
The meeting also bid farewell to Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah as the outgoing IFLA Asia Pacific President. The team now welcomes IFLA Asia Pacific’s new President, Damian Tang, from Singapore.

MCIEA Awards Assessment Date: 3, 9 and 10 June 2015 Venue: Various locations
The Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) which is hosted by CIDB Malaysia, is the Malaysian premier accolade for all round excellence. It is an effort to recognise the players’ achievements in the construction industry. The assessment of the award began with the National Cancer Institute at Presint 7, Putrajaya. Among the panels are members from PAM, SIRIM, IEM, UITM, with ILAM proudly presented by LAr. Noriah Mat.
Fundamental Landscape Design Courses at FLORIA 2015 Date: 3-4 June 2015 Venue: Royal Floria Putrajaya Showground
The fundamental landscape design courses were conducted in conjunction with the annual Royal FLORIA Putrajaya 2015 at the Anjung Floria, Putrajaya. The course, which was conducted by LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain, aimed to train the staff from the Public Works Department (JKR) about basic design knowledge and skills in landscape planning and design.
PAM - “Tan Sri Ar. Chan Sau Lai Arch. Award” 2nd Jury Session Date: 4 June 2015 Venue: PAM Office
ILAM was invited by Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) to be one of the jurors for the PAM - Tan Sri Ar. Chan Sau Lai Architecture Award. The objectives of the award are to recognise the outstanding achievement of students of architectural design, and to expose new talents to the professional industry. ILAM was represented by President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, in the second round of the judging process.
“Anugerah Keceriaan Felda 2015” Judging Date: 4-15 June 2015 Venue: Nationwide
This year, LAr. Mohd Fadrillah Mohd Taib was once again appointed as a juror for the national award “Anugerah Kecerian Kg FELDA”, which aims to promote conducive green living at all the FELDA settlements nationwide. The jury session ran from 4-15 Jun 2015 and ILAM was proud to be part of this annual programme to elevate the quality of our living environment.

Dabong Post Flood Relief Date: 5 June 2015 Venue: Dabong, Kelantan
The Faculty of Built Environment, UTM, with the collaboration of ILAM, UPM and UIA, jointly organised a post relief programme to restore the school compound of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dabong, Kuala Krai, Kelantan, with landscape works and planting. The ILAM team, led by Hon. Secretary, LAr. Dr. Nor Ataih Ismail, and several council members, contributed their efforts to ensure the school compound was brought back to the original state for the children to continue learning in a comfortable environment.

The Malaysian Professional Centre (BIM) hosted the Annual Dinner to celebrate the various professional bodies in Malaysia. ILAM was represented by several council members. A prize giving ceremony was also conducted to celebrate the winners of the BIM Bowling Match.

MBPJ Open Spaces Workshop Date: 15-16 June Venue: Hotel Empire, Subang Jaya
A two day workshop about the preparation of an open space guideline was conducted by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) aimed to discuss matters such as the allocation of open spaces, the components, enforcement and the control of landscape plan approval. This workshop was attended by ILAM Vice President. LAr. Sabarudin Buang, who also delivered a speech during the workshop.

The GBI Township Tool V2.0 Development Meeting was held to further develop the tools for townships. Kuala Lumpur Design Month 2015 Meeting Date: 7 July 2015 Venue: Malaysia Design Council (MRM)
The inaugural Kuala Lumpur Design Month Festival was organised by Kuala Lumpur City Hall. As part of the support under the Malaysia Design Council (MRM), ILAM was called to attend and discuss the participation in this October event. LAr. The annual Malaysian Professional Centre (BIM) General Meeting was held with the participation of various professional bodies. This year also witnessed the changing of new leadership of BIM with a fresh election. It is with great pleasure that ILAM announces that ILAM Fellow, Dato’ LAr. Kuala Lumpur Orchid and Bonsai Show (KLOBS) 2015 Date: 8 August 2015 Venue: Perdana Botanical Park, Kuala Lumpur
The annual Kuala Lumpur Orchid and Bonsai Festival was once again held in the sprawling Perdana Botanical Park from 7-16 August 2015. This year’s event saw participation by 23 countries and was officiated by Y.Bhg. Datin Seri Anggraini binti Sentiyaki. The grand opening of this event was also attended by ILAM President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir.
ILAM Sabah Chapter Meeting and Raya Celebration
Date: 8 August 2015 Venue: Pejabat Bahagian Landskap, Jabatan Perancangan Bandar dan Wilayah Negeri Sabah ILAM Sabah Chapter, with the leadership of LAr. Eric Ye, hosted a member meeting to discuss matters such as ILAM CPD Events, Rebuilding Ranau, and discussion on current legislation on submitting person: for professional practice in Sabah. Immediately following the meeting, a small gathering to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri was also organised and was filled with laugher and food. Nilai Polytechnic Student Visit to ILAM Date: 10 August 2015 Venue: ILAM @ ALAMi Shah Alam
A group of 26 students and 5 lecturers made a visit to ILAM to further understand the profession of a landscape architect and the future prospects in the industry. During the visit, the
group was hosted and briefed by ILAM council member, LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain.
Workshop of Industry Standards Committee on Mechanical Engineering (ISC F) Date: 20-21 August 2015 Venue: Hotel Concorde, Shah Alam
A workshop was organised by SIRIM Malaysia to ease the process of updating a Malaysian Standards (MS) for Mechanical Engineering under IFC F. Among the workshop activities was the updating of the five year old Malaysian Standards, proposal for a working timeline for each Standard Development Committee (SDC) and to ensure the implementation of MS in the new projects. This workshop was attended by several landscape architects which includes ILAM President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir.
Building Industry Gala 2015 Date: 14 August 2015 Venue: Royal Chulan Kuala Lumpur
In conjunction with Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival (KLAF) and Archidex 2015, the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), hosted a Gala Night to celebrate the delegates of the festival and also an award ceremony for the industry. The Gala Night was filled with fringe activities besides the dinner. ILAM was represented by council member, LAr. Fairouz @ Muhammad Che Ani, and ILAM Fellow, Dato’ LAr. Ismail Ngah.
Workshop For Revision of MS966 Playground Equipment Date: 25-26 August 2015 Venue: Hotel Concrode, Shah Alam
The Malaysian Standards MS966 for playground equipment was organised by SIRIM with chaired by Ministry of Health and the Technical Committee consists of members from Perbadanan Putrajaya KPDNKK, JLN, ILAM, PSAM, SIRIM, QAS, CAP, UiTM, Consumer Association and Industry Manufacturers. The Malaysian Standards (MS) also adopted an additional two standards with regards to Safety Surfacing and Impact Attenuation for Playgrounds which is scheduled to be published by SIRIM beginning of 2016.

Merdeka Raya 2015
Date: 22 August 2015 Venue: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) An afternoon filled with merry making and celebrating togetherness was held at the compound of a Traditional Malay Village style outdoor museum at UPM. This event was organised by ILAM to jointly celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the 58th Malaysia National Day. Among those who attended were about 60 ILAM members with families, who spend the afternoon socialising and taking photos in a traditional village environment filled with delicious delicacies and food.

Discussion on Term of Reference for Kuala Lumpur Landscape Master Plan 2015-2025 Date: 1 September 2015 Venue: Faculty of Design & Architecture, UPM
A meeting was called by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) with ILAM to discuss further on the preparation of “Term of Reference� for the incoming Kuala Lumpur Landscape Master Plan 2015-2025 to replace the existing KL Landscape Master Plan 2003. The discussion was attended by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Landscape Department officers with ILAM represented by President, Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, Vice President, LAr. Sabarudin Buang and council member, LAr. Dr. Mohd Ramzi Mohd Hussain. Following the discussion, a meeting was held on 12 October 2015 to come to an agreement about the Terms of Reference for the engagement of landscape consultants and the scope of work.

The IFLA Asia Pacific Congress and APR Council Meeting was held from 6 - 9 September 2015. The IFLA APR Council Meeting on 6 September 2015 was attended by ILAM President, Assoc Prof. LAr. Dr. Osman Mohd Tahir, and ILAM official delegate, LAr. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail. During the meeting, ILAM presented the endorsement proposal of Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards
The Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2015 Date: 11 September 2015 Venue: Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur
The Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2015 is the construction industry awards honouring the great achievements of the construction industry players and their works, organised by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). This Gala Award Night was attended by LAr. Sabarudin Buang and LAr. Noriah Mat as members of the jury representing ILAM. The night witnessed awards covering Best Contractors, Best Projects, Special Award, International Achievement Awards, Builder of the Year Award and Individual Awards.

National Urban Forum Date: 5-6 October 2015 Venue: One City, Subang Jaya
In conjunction with Urban October Celebration, EAROPH International, with the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing & Local Government Malaysia, jointly organised this forum as part of the celebration of World Habitat Day and World Cities Day, in October. With the theme “Sustainable Urban Futures”, this forum brought together innovative strategies on social, economic, culture and environment matters that can be adopted to overcome our urban challenges and contributing towards better urban resilience in the face of many obstacles faced by cities and nations today. ILAM was represented in this forum by the President and several council members.
ILAM Humanitarian Programme: Rebuilding Ranau, Sabah Date: 17 October 2015 Venue: Kampung Pinausok, Ranau, Sabah
ILAM Sabah Chapter initiated a humanitarian programme, ‘Rebuilding Ranau”, intended to restore the water supply at Kampung Pinausok, Kundasang at Ranau District. The programme started with an online donation drive to collect funds for the humanitarian programme followed by the work to install 10 water tanks with the capacity of 4,000 gallons to supply between 5-10 families for about 2-3 days with the water source channeled from the nearby river. A more detailed report can be found in the Special Report section (page 14) in this issue.
Dialogue with Stakeholders on Open Spaces Planning Guideline for Development Approval in Petaling Jaya Date: 21 October 2015 Venue: Petaling Jaya City Council
ILAM was represented by LAr. Samsul Rohaizad Mohd Jemoner who attended the one day dialogue with the Petaling Jaya City Hall (MBPJ) to discuss the requirements for open spaces in the development of Petaling Jaya. From the dialogue, a draft proposal will be presented to MBPJ Town Planning Department for further improvements.
