Welcome to the latest issue of Bulletin LANDSKAP, following the Special Edition FLORIA 2013 issue, in August. To wrap up the activities of 2013, ILAM has been involved in many meetings and collaborations with professional and government bodies and the private sector in Malaysia in our bid to formulate new policies, initiatives and planning for new collaboration efforts and programmes for the upcoming year, 2014. To all council members and faithful ILAM members who were involved in any way, big or small throughout 2013, I would like to say a personal “Thank you”. In this issue of the bulletin, we will highlight the past 6 months efforts and introduce some of the top 10 activities, events and initiatives planned for 2014. In addition, we will outline the major events for the coming year, which include the IFLA2014 Asia Pacific Congress and Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards, which will be run simultaneously by ILAM, in Kuching, Sarawak. It will certainly be an exciting year ahead for all of us at ILAM. Secrets of Borneo Expedition 01 27-29 September 2013

A group of more than 30 participants from ILAM, and their family members, joined this unique CPD Educational Expedition. It was organised by ILAM Sabah Chapter. This expedition was also reported, with impressive coverage, by our local TV station, Bernama TV. The 3 day expedition aimed to create an opportunity for the members to socialise while learning about the wonders of tropical rainforests in an up-close and personal visit.

Organised by ILAM Sabah Chapter

DAY 1 The evening of the arrival at Kundasang was a rewarding one as the chilly temparature was perfect for a gathering with fellow members from both Peninsular and East Malaysia. The participants were treated to fresh produce from the highlands in a pot of steamy soup, a steamboat dinner. LEFT Steamboat amidst the cold weather of Kundasang CENTRE It is always a great time to catch up with fellow landscape architects RIGHT Celebrating ILAM President’s birthday

DAY 2 The second day of the trip was focused on the Kinabalu Botanical Park, by the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, where various rare orchid species and ferns can be found along the many walking trails. A short briefing about Mount Kinabalu was also conducted by the park curator, followed by a visit to the park museum. The expedition then continued on to Poring, where participants enjoyed the views from the canopy walkway and witnessed the bloom of “Rafflesia”, a genus of parasitic yet quite spectacular flowering plants. At the conclusion of the excursion, there was time to relax and soak in the pools of the Poring Hot Springs. The excitement didn’t end there as participants were entertained by the local Homestay staff with a cultural song and dance, and a sampling of local delicacies in the evening, all courtesy of ILAM Sabah Chapter. LEFT Visit to Kinabalu Park Museum CENTRE Examine the exotic species of Kinabalu Park RIGHT Canopy Walkway at Poring

DAY 3 To wrap up the expedition, the participants visited the War Memorial at Kundasang and were briefed by the local guide about the history and the construction of the gardens within the War Memorial. The highlight of the third day was the highlands tour at Desa Cattle Farm, where milk is locally produced. The participants witnessed first hand the milking process and sampled delicious produce, fresh from the farm. The visit was a resounding success and ended with the certificate presentation to all the participants, who enjoyed the outdoor environment of the highlands and the cool, crisp evening air. ILAM would like to take this opportunity to thank ILAM Sabah Chapter for undertaking such a memorable experience. Healing Garden Hospital Gardens at Acute Care Hospitals The Copenhagen Experience

by: Shureen Faris Abdul Shukor shureenf@yahoo.com

Department of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Design and Architecture, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

A study was carried out by Shureen Faris, and the results indicated that the hospital gardens are mainly used equally among staff, patients and visitors. The age of the respondents varied from 11 to 78 years. The results gained from these examples gave an understanding of how gardens play a role in Danish hospitals. The study managed to give indications about how the gardens are designed and efforts that are required in order to create healthcare settings with restorative qualities.

ABOVE The garden at Rigshospital has easy access from the wards where patients can enjoy fresh air and sunshine BELOW LEFT & MIDDLE Well maintained and easy access garden in Bispebjerg hospital promote the use of the gardens BELOW RIGHT The hospital garden with an enclosed space at Herlev creates spaces for smoking and the use of cell phones within the hospital vicinity

The Selected Hospital Gardens The study took into consideration Denmark’s Hospital Plan of 2007 and selected one acute care hospital in each of the planning districts as case studies, which are Bispebjerg Hospital, Herlev Hospital, Hillerød Hospital, Hvidovre Hospital and Rigshospital.

The Use of the Gardens Smoking has shown to be the highest activity while being in the gardens and the results also indicated that more smoking is in enclosed areas within the time ranges of 5 to 10 minutes. Having lunch in the gardens is another favourite activity and results indicated that users, especially staff, spent longer minutes in gardens which were nearer to their work stations. Patients seem to spend longer time in the gardens to get away from stressful environment compared to other users. Patients and visitors apparently spent a longer time to enjoy the gardens with stays that last from 31 minutes to 1 hour.

9

Preferences In terms of the most preferred features that they enjoy, patients and staff reported that they enjoy the natural features e.g sunshine (57.7%), fresh air (53.8%), vegetation (26.3%), followed by the water features where 14.7% said that they enjoy having it in the garden but 57% of respondents mentioned no such features are found at the hospital gardens. The staff, patients and visitors also mentioned they like the garden as a place to be with family and friends and also as a place to participate in social life.

Satisfaction with Gardens Satisfaction is the highest in Bispebjerg’s garden, followed by Rigshospital. This is due to the location of the garden in Bispebjerg, making it accessible to many staff who have little time to spare to be in the garden. The well-kept plantings there make the garden attractive, although the garden facilities (picnic tables, benches) are not extensive. The existence of two water features also contributed to making the garden at Bispebjerg a place to be away from a stressful environment. Having an infrastructure for smoking adjacent to the garden, such as in Rigshospital, also helps to reduce people from smoking in the garden.

Considerations for Future Garden Design in Acute Care Hospitals Understanding the needs of different users, their activities, the limitations of time and their expectations should be considered when designing hospital gardens in acute care hospitals. The planning should consider the view of the garden from windows and strategic placement of plants especially for staff. The high level of stress due to work demands among the staff should be given priority by creating attractive working environments they could enjoy even when passing through. And lastly, creating a healthy work environment by promoting hospital gardens as public green areas with exercise equipment and sports facilities that could be used by staff, patients, visitors and the surrounding community. TOP Beautiful hospital garden, ideal for healing of mind and soul ABOVE The roof top garden at Hvidovre Hospital was shown to be the most preferred among the patients for enjoying passive activities LEFT The garden at Hillerod Hospital is dominated by hardscape features and has proven to be the least popular amongst hospital users

Healing Water

It is no coincidence that we mere mortals are intrinsically drawn to the sound of running water; it appeals to us on an intuitive level because we ourselves, as well as our world, are made of this precious resource. Running water has the potential to relax and re-energize us and it can heal and soothe.

Keeping it Alive! The key to maintaining a healthy, healthful fountain or water feature is clean, running water. The way to create a healthy, healthful fountain, however, is designing the fountain using the laws of nature, so that it has the ability to positively charge the running water. Form, color, ornamentation and dĂŠcor play a huge role in how appealing an object appears visually. Most significantly, the perfect proportion of parts to the whole, plays a key role in an object appearing aesthetically pleasing to the casual observer.

Benefits

Enhanced landscaping improves property value, and water features make your property stand out from the rest. A waterfall in a front garden provides curb appeal, while a backyard ecosystem pond increases a home’s value, much like a deck, patio, or gazebo. The sound of a water feature helps to minimise traffic disturbances. In addition, water features provide an interesting backdrop as a welcoming element, while adding aesthetic appeal to your property.

Home garden ponds create a gathering spot for family and friends. Young children, teenagers,

Tropicana Home

parents, and grandparents enjoy relaxing by the edge of a cool pond. Water features act like a social magnet, pulling the individual members of a family together. Parents can also educate young children about the wonders of nature with an ecosystem pond.

Health and Wellness Water features provide soothing sights and sounds that help one relax and de-stress in today’s busy world. Decrease blood pressure and improve physical and mental health as you prop your feet up and enjoy the therapeutic effects of the sounds of Mother Nature. New research shows that hospital patients who have a view of natural landscapes recover faster from surgery and require less pain medication. In addition, heart rate, blood pressure, and other functions return to normal levels more quickly when people view natural, rather than urban, landscapes.

Perdana Lake Gardens

Environmental Conservation Environmental sustainability has taken center stage in today’s world, and water plays an important role as the world’s greatest resource. An ecosystem pond is self-sustaining and requires very little maintenance. Although it takes many gallons of water to fill initially, over the long term, it requires less water than the expanse of lawn it replaced. Water features attract wildlife of all kinds, from birds to butterflies, to frogs and salamanders.

Improved Microclimate Landscape and water features can change the microclimate around a building by 20 - 25 degrees F. An indoor water feature increases air circulation and creates positive energy, reducing indoor heat and reducing indoor pollutants.
