EASTERN CYCLO-CROSS ASSOCIATION Yearbook 2021/22 Welcome to our first ever yearbook, produced to reflect a return to “normal” racing following the devastation of our lives due to the COVID pandemic. Although the number of events during the season was slightly down on our last full season, it was great to see some new faces, new venues and new organisers adding to the familiar faces and surroundings that makes our League such a success.

Participation levels were understandably down at all events during the season but we are confident that levels will return to pre-COVID levels in 2022/23.

At the end of the season, in conjunction with the AGM, we ran an online survey that asked, amongst other things, for riders to vote for their top three League events of the season. Coming

out top was the Regional Championships promoted by Ipswich BC at Trinity Park. Three events tied for second place, West Suffolk Wheelers, Iceni Velo and Stowmarket & DCC. Highlight of our year was the staging of the World Masters Championships and our thanks go out to everyone that helped make it such a success. We look forward to promoting it again in December 2022.

PROMOTER: Eastern Cyclo-Cross Association ORGANISER: Steve Grimwood The Eastern Cyclo-Cross Association was proud this season to host, for the first time, the 2021 UCI Masters Cyclo-Cross World Championships and the first ever Special Olympics Cyclo-Cross for riders with an intellectual disability.

Organising the Championships under the cloud of the global Covid pandemic was a challenge like no other, but against all the odds we not only managed to host the event but it surpassed all expectations. Riders came from Pictures kindly provided by Basil Thornton

all over the world, often managing to negotiate many prohibitive Covid quarantine and travel requirements. The event was a resounding success thanks to the incredible teamwork of the volunteers and helpers from the region along with our main sponsors East Suffolk Council and our venue host Trinity Park.

We look forward to hosting the event again in December 2022 with even more participants spread over 3 days of racing, we are sure it will once again be a weekend to remember.

EASTERN CYCLO-CROSS ASSOCIATION Organising an event Cyclo-cross is the fastest growing cycling discipline in Britain at the moment. Due to its accessibility for riders, cyclo-cross events are very popular to organise. If you are a club or event organiser looking to promote a cyclocross event in the future, the Eastern CycloCross Association has a wealth of knowledge, experience and willing volunteers to assist.

Cyclo-cross races are traditionally held in the autumn and winter months over a course of 2.5-3.5km in length. All ages are supported at races from as young as four to the over 70’s in dedicated categories over a fully scheduled day of racing.

Traditionally, the league races are split into separate categories with some categories riding at the same time. The races and categories consist of the following: | | | | | | |

Under 8’s & Under 10’s (Boys & Girls) Under 12’s (Boys & Girls) Youth (Under 16’s & Under 14’s, Boys & Girls) Veteran Men (aged 50+) Veteran Men (aged 40-49) Women (Inc. Junior, Senior & Veteran Women) Seniors & Junior Men (aged 17 to 39)

Races are generally held on public parks and other open spaces. Race surfaces can include grass, gravel, tarmac, and sand with a variety of terrain. Some organisers offer man-made

obstacles such as hurdles and steps which force riders to get off the bike and run which is deemed acceptable for cyclo-cross.

Existing organisers usually stick to the same or similar dates for their events year after year so check previous seasons race calendars if you are considering organising an event to avoid clashes with others.

People organise cyclo-cross events for a variety of different reasons. For some it offers an opportunity to give something back to the sport. Other people find it provides the opportunity to develop a new skill, and build experience and knowledge of the sport.

The majority of events within the Eastern region form the Eastern Cyclo-Cross League.
