Die Carletonville Herald het weer oor verskeie nuusgebeure in sy uitgawe van 20 jaar gelede berig. Daar is pas begin met voorbereidingswerk vir die bou van ’n sentrale sportkompleks van die stadsraad van Carletonville.
Die eerste fase van die kompleks sou sowat R6,5 miljoen beloop en sal sale vir binnenshuise sportaktiwiteite insluit. Die kompleks is geleë op die skouterrein oorkant die Checkerssentrum. Die fase sal bestaan uit ’n hoofsaal waar vlugbal, tennis, basket-
derneming. Met sy aankoms het hy ‘n voetuig opgemerkmet ‘n slapende man in. Toe hy die voordeur nader, is twee skote uit die voertuig op hom geskiet. The Rotary Club, whose association with Rotara School stretches back to 1968, regards the school as its ‘baby’ and ceaselessly works for the betterment of the pupils and their school. Regarded by its handicapped pupils as a home rather than an institution, Rotara is in dire need of a new hostel. ‘I did not know whether my husband was dead or alive’

“I did not know whether my husband was dead or alive.” An extremely distressed woman, Mrs Brenda Sutton, of Blyvooruitzicht spoke to the Herald on Tuesday, after her husband was shot at around 23:00 the night before. Fortunately Mr. Phillip Sutton lived to tell the tale of a terrifying ordeal he and his stepson endured on Monday evening. “I was watching television when suddenly the lights tripped,” tells Brenda. “They tripped, came back on for a second and then tripped again, leaving us in complete darkness,” she tells of the electricity in Tower Street, Blyvooruitzicht. “I drove out to the garage up at Spar to get petrol for the generator,” tells Dylan Clark (19), Brenda’s son. Then Dylan returned with Phillip who is an electrician at Blyvoor, and they took a walk up the road to see what had gone wrong. “We walked to the small electricity box called a ‘kiosk’ first,” Phillip tells. “The electricity for the houses around is distributed to each individual house from here.” The men saw that nothing was wrong at the kisok, about 80 meters from their house, and then walked over to the mini-substation (OCB as Phillip refers to it) just across the kiosk, about another 15 meters from there. “We checked the low-voltage side first. Everything was fine there,” Phillip

explains. The two men then walked around to the other side, nothing but a small dim torch in hand for light. “The first fishy thing we noticed was that the lock on the substation doors had been cut,” they tell. “Nevertheless, we entered so that I could see what the problem was,” he explains. Phillip is an electrician who works, amongst other things, with faults such as the one he was about to find at the substation daily. “I walked in and immediately I could see that the main voltage switch in front of the transformer had been disengaged,” he tells seriously. The electrician who switches the main voltage back on should wear a ‘fire-suit’ for protection. “I looked behind the switch and saw that, even though it was evident that someone had definitely been tampering with the equipment, the cables were all still there and intact,” Phillip says. As Phillip and Dylan turned around to contemplate whether Phillip should take a chance and switch the power back on without a suit, or rather call someone, a shot was fired. “That was close by,” Dylan said to his stepfather. The second shot dropped Phillip to the ground and the third was fired just above Dylan’s head. Another two shots were fired at the men, who had both dropped at that stage. “I could hear a few men say “We got him,” in their own language close by, but could see nothing and did not know how badly wounded my stepfather

Fortunately, Phillip had also crawled through the long grass back to 14th Avenue where they found and picked him up. He was rushed to Potchefstroom Mediclinic Hospital and treated. “They said that the bullet had just missed the bone in his arm,” Brenda explains. “He could have been shot through the heart, it was so close,” an emotional wife and mother tells. This family, is just one of the many suffering families in Blyvooruitzicht which makes the mine’s entire future seem terribly bleak. “I am not even able to find another job, because Blyvoor cannot do my medical exit for me, I don’t even have a clue who is meant to do it for me,” says Phillip. Detective Sergeant Jacques Nagel of the Carletonville SAPS is investigating this case. As the minibus approached one group who had blocked the road, one of the Basotho men pointed a firearm at them and fired a shot, aiming at the driver. The officers had no option but to retaliate and, with great difficulty, had to manoeuvre their way out of the crowd of Basothos which had surrounded them from all sides. Before they could leave, however, the minibus’ windscreen was shattered by a brick which the shooter tried to smash through the window. The entire windscreen was damaged. Whilst this was happening, other police officers who were in the hostel and trying to exit were also confronted by
a big group of Basotho men. “These men also shot at our officers from just a couple of meters away,” Kundethe said. Realising that the officers were completely outnumbered and the Basothos obviously unafraid and disrespectful, officers were given an instruction to withdraw from Blyvoor. “None of our members were shot, but it was close,” Kundethe tells. Basothos attack locals and police officers Cerise du Plooy Another heated confrontation between the illegal Basothos of Matariana Village and the legal, local residents of the village, turned Blyvooruitzicht into a warzone again. To further this tension on Saturday evening, March 15, the police officers who were called by locals for assistance were also attacked by the Basothos. “The local residents were attacked by the residents of Matariana,” told Captain Jabulani Kundethe. “They were assaulted and although no one was shot, some shots were randomly fired.” These people, who have been nothing but barbaric in the last two years, entered the village and started assaulting people left, right and center. In desperation, locals called the Carletonville SAPS for help. One police officer who wishes to remain anonymous, said that they received calls from terrified residents in the hostel, saying the zamazamas were attacking them and shooting randomly. Nine police officers responded to the call, only to fall victim to the arrogant, ruthless attacks by these people. “Our members were met by members of the community who showed them what direction their attackers had run in,” Kundethe explains. Police officers split up, and whilst some entered the hostel, others tried to assist behind the hostel. Two members of the task

Be like him who leads by example Cerise du Plooy I’m writing this column in the banking queue. Its long enough, so I figured I would easily get through it. I was watching an old school friend (who works in the bank) and admiring the way she treated her clients. If you’re anything like me, you’re slightly disabled when it comes to inserting your card the right way and pressing the correct buttons to activate things and so on. I can understand why bank employees would often get annoyed and impatient, especially with people like me. I certainly would. Nevertheless, this girl was just friendly to client on client on client. Not with a fake smile and a “must be nice” attitude, but with sincerity and genuine friendliness. (She always has been a darling though). This triggered a childhood memory. My late grandfather and my grandmother used to bank with Saambou back in the day. I remember them always visiting on weekends and telling us how great the girl at the bank’s service was. “You
know, that girl at Saambou is great and delivers excellent service,” they used to say. I remember thinking that, whatever her name was, must have been the greatest person to have had my grandparents speaking about her weekend after weekend. This further reminded me of a discussion I had with someone who has worked closely with the Carletonville Police in excess of 25 years. She told me of how things worked back in the day and how this specific man headed the Detectives unit in Carletonville. The current management/leadership of our detectives unit is superb, don’t get me wrong. The man who headed it years back, however, made such an impression that here we were, in excess of 10 years ago, speaking of this man. “He ran that unit like a business,”
she said. He worked with his detectives and never placed himself above anyone,” she explained. If there was a need to go to dangerous areas, he would drive in front, enter first and then allow his members to follow, giving back-up from outside. “He lead by example” she said. Ironically enough, my parents and I (and the rest of Carletonville) were having dinner at Spur on Monday evening. A very nice man approaches my father and starts talking to him about what he does and so on. “I haven’t seen you in years,” he said. When he turned to walk away I said to my father, “Wow, what a real nice man.” Having worked with the SAPS often himself, my father tells me who this man is and he could, in fact, not have presented himself better than he did.
Everything this woman had told me and the man’s own mannerisms just combined and flowed so smoothly to create a man in my eyes, exactly as she had described him. I had no option but to go to him afterward and say that I had heard about him from someone he closely worked with many years ago, and that I think he must have done an excellent job, still having people talk about him today. I could see that this made his day and felt so good. I think we should all strive to be like this man. We should all do our jobs with vigour and enthusiasm. Not just to get paid a salary at the end of every month. At the same time we should, in all aspects, be like this man and ‘lead by example,’ not only in the workplace but outside, in our friendships and acquaintanceships and everywhere we go and have influence. I would feel honoured if people were still speaking about me in about 10 years from now, saying I was good and treated them right. I would feel like a woman leader who had led by example

Mysterious taps raise questions
Adele Louw Several Khutsong families recently got illegally connected onto the municipality’s water system. A concerned Khutsong resident, Welile Fihla, told the Herald recently that he had heard of illegal taps being installed in Khutsong’s T Section. This is an informal housing area where residents get water from communal taps installed on the corners of some streets. When the Herald visited the area on Monday, several of the new taps were installed in yards. According to residents, they have paid R150 to R200 to the man who installed the taps. Families who could not afford this money, did not get a tap. Residents also told the Herald that the taps had been installed during the past few weeks. According to rumours, the taps were made up of material that had been stolen at building sites in the new Extension 5 housing area between Oberholzer and Welverdiend. As far as could be determined, none of the new taps are connected to water
meters. According to some residents, about 300 of the taps have been connected onto the municipal water supply so far. “It was really shocking when I saw this the first time. What upset me more is that members of the ward committee must know about this and that it is against the law,” says Fihla. He added that he called Jomo Mogale, the Member of Mayoral Council designated with the task of overseeing water, gas and electricity matters, about the problem. “Jomo told me to keep it quiet as the Police have been informed and will arrest someone soon,” Fihla told the Herald. However, when the newspaper called the detective services of the police in Carletonville, under whose jurisdiction Extension 5 falls, and Khutsong, police members indicated that no cases specifically dealing with this problem
are under investigation. Cases currently being investigated deal with the general theft of a variety of materials from sites where contractors are building houses for the municipality. In last year’s State of the Nation address delivered by the Executive Mayor, Maphefo Mogale Letsie, she indicated that on average 28 % of the water bought by the municipality during the 2012/2013 municipal financial year could not be accounted for. “The situation in T Section was not previously brought under attention of the municipality. The matter will be investigated and appropriate action taken. If it is found that illegal connections were made a case will be opened with the SAPS to investigate,” a municipal spokesman responded after questions about the matter were sent to the municipality. Blyvoor family robbed by Basothos Cerise du Plooy A Blyvoor family was robbed by two Basotho men in the early hours of Sunday morning, March 23. The complainant and her husband, as well as their two children were asleep at their home in Ekuphakameni Village, Blyvoor, when the complainant heard someone kicking the door down. “The complainant screamed for help and then heard two gunshots fired,” told Captain Jabulani Kundethe, Spokesperson of the Carletonville SAPS. The suspects ran into the house and entered the bedroom the children were sleeping in. “They woke the children up and in a menacing voice asked where their father was,” Kundethe explains. “They then continued to raid the home.” Both mother and father stayed in their bedroom which the suspects never entered. The house was ransacked and airtime vouchers to the value of R 1 400, a blanket, five packets of Courtleigh cigarettes and five packets of Peter Stuyvesant cigarettes as well as three drinking glasses were stolen. When the suspects fled, the complainant looked through the window and just saw two men with blankets wrapped around them, running away. Detective Constable Michael Maaka of the Carletonville SAPS is investigating this case. Anyone with information, or who may have seen anything which could assist Maaka in his investigation, must urgently call him at 083 409 4596.

Water ons almal se lewensaar Die afgelope week het mense regoor die land aan aktiwiteite deelgeneem wat deel van die nasionale waterweek was. Allerlei amptenare en politici het as deel van dié vieringe dit weereens benadruk dat ons waterbronne beskerm moet word omdat dit nie verewig sal hou indien daar nie daarna omgesien word nie. Intussen het verskeie water-verwante probleme weer die afgelope tyd in ons area kop uitgesteek. Aan die een kant van Carletonville het inwoners van Blyvoor protesteer omdat hulle nou na jare wat dié dienste deur die myn verskaf is, nou vir onder meer water en behuising sal moet begin betaal. Hoewel hul watertoevoer nie lukraak toegedraai kan word nie, argumenteer die nuwe eienaars van dié myndorp met rede dat niks verniet is nie en dat inwoners sal moet begin betaal indien hul dienste
wil hê. Aan die ander kant van die dorp, in Khutsong, is iemand op die oog af besig om onwettig krane vir inwoners in te sit. Die area waar die krane onlangs ingesit is, is ‘n onwettige plakkersgebied waar daar tot dusvêr net kommunale krane beskikbaar was. Die nuwe krane is ook nie aan watermeters gekoppel nie, wat beteken dat die inwoners nou water kan gebruik en misbruik soos hul wil. Intussen is dit nie seker of die pype wat deur die persoon wat die konneksies gemaak het, só stewig is dat dit nie tot waterlekke kan lei wat op die ou end sinkgate teweeg kan bring nie. Intussen word kriminele sake van onder meer waterbesoedeling steeds teen Blyvooruitzicht sowel as verskeie grondeienaars in die omgewing ondersoek. Met al dié probleme in gedagte is die beskerming van waterbronne beslis iets wat meer aandag in ons omgewing kan geniet.

Blyvoor village also in line of fire

The problems at Blyvoor seem to have no end with the village also becoming a hotspot during the past week. Blyvoor’s mine and village were sold separately by its provisional liquidators towards the end of last year after attempts to sell them as a unit failed. This was because no buyers could come up with the money needed for the purchase. Adding to this deterrent was that potential buyers would also have to pay outstanding fees to Eskom. Since this time, Blyvoor’s mining activities have been in the spotlight because of the mine’s sale to the controversial company, Goldrich Holdings. Questions were raised about Goldrich’s ability to mine after it came to light that the “controversial Bhana family” were all involved in the company. The Bhana family were involved in the liquidated airline, Velvet Sky and the mining company, Aurora, which was liquidated in 2011 after the botched takeover of two Pamodzi Gold Mines. Although Goldrich’s takeover seemed to go smoothly at first, Blyvoor’s
provisional liquidators soon dragged them to court over the fact that they did were still in arrears of payment for the mine. Although many of Blyvoor’s previous employees were retained by Goldrich, not all salaries have been paid up to date. These problems also started affecting the housing side of Blyvoor during the past week. On March 19, a group of angry residents marched to current housing offices and handed over a memorandum to an employee of the company, Double D & G Building Contractors, which has bought the village. Although most of the grievances in the memorandum related to the mining activities at Blyvoor, the protesters indicated that they were not happy with the fact that they were supposed to pay for housing and services fees if they previously got these for free as part of their remuneration package at Blyvoor. As far as could be determined, some protesters stormed the offices again on Monday regarding the housing problems. One of the issues that the group complained about was the fact that the wa-
ter supply to the village was not adequate. Residents of some areas of Blyvoor have been struggling without water and electricity for weeks. Some of those affected included at least one school. On Tuesday, Liz Gericke, one of the directors at Double D & G Building Contractors, indicated that most of the problems originated from the notion that the people staying in houses at Blyvoor could not differentiate between the town and mine. “At first we thought that people would be grateful that we saved the houses. Unfortunately, not even 10 % of the people staying in Blyvoor are currently handing over any form of payment,” Gericke told the Herald. “I cannot carry a bill of about R2 million a month when no one is willing to pay,” she added. According to Gericke, illegal miners have also stolen infrastructure such as electrical cables, which cannot be replaced if there is already a financial deficit Gericke also added that they are trying to keep the rent at Blyvoor as affordable as possible to accommodate the

ved that the cattle which had been stolen, were grazing on Sibanye Gold’s KDC mine property, together with several other herds of cattle. On Tuesday, 11 March, the task team members went to the site the cattle were grazing at, accompanied by the owner of the stolen cattle from Deelkraal. “It was

The officers walked through the long grass to where the cattle were being kept. “The owner managed to identify nine of his cattle, due to knowing what they look like,” Captain Jabulani Kundethe, Spokesperson of the Carletonville SAPS said. Exchange student shares knowledge to help others country. Upon her arrival, Pyl did work at Mogale City. After leaving Merafong she will work in Sandton for a few weeks. During her stay in Carletonville, Pyl has visited various local entrepreneurs such as street sellers and has also advised local officials on possible ways to enhance entrepreneurship. She is also part of a team organising a female leadership symposium, which will be held in Belgium. As part of her work in South Africa she is also establishing an online platform from where local producers can market their goods and make themselves known to international buyers. “I would like to educate Belgian people on the impact of their spending sustainable development. It is not just about selling products but also about helping people on the other side of the world,” Pyl told the Herald on Monday. According to Pyl, she has enjoyed
her stay in Merafong very much. “The people are much more friendly than in Belgium. They even treated me on my 21st birthday last week,” the friendly visitor told the Herald. She added that she has learned a lot during her stay. “I think South Africa has a lot of potential, but the educational system must be improved. Merafong is also trying hard to improve,” she says. “It is important to go 100 % for your dreams. In the beginning it is difficult, but you must try to invest as much you can to reap the fruits. People must also not think in little boxes but be creative,” is her advice to local entrepreneurs. According to Pyl she is enjoying the stay in South Africa so much that she would like to come back. An interesting visitor has been sharing ideas with municipal officials during the past few weeks. A Belgian exchange student, Ms Evelien Pyl has been quietly working from the Town Planning offices of the Merafong City Local Municipality for the past three weeks. She arrived in town at the beginning of March and will leave again on Friday as part of a study trip to South Africa. Pyl explained to the Herald on Monday that she is currently studying International Entrepreneurship at a university called the Karel de Grote Hogeschool in the Belgian city Antwerpen. As part of her course as a final year student, she has to do 17 weeks internship, at least five weeks of which must be done abroad. After “sending lots of emails”, the enthusiastic Pyl got into contact with a Belgian company doing business in South Africa. This contact enabled her to come to the

Another Eskom deadline looming Adele Louw While the new owners of Blyvoor’s village have problems to deal with, the mine also has another deadline looming. On Tuesday, one of the Blyvoor’s provisional liquidators, Leigh Roering, indicated that Eskom has given its current owners, Goldrich Holdings, up to Friday to pay an outstanding electricity account. He also confirmed that the liquidators were still waiting for a court date to have their application heard orally in court that Goldrich be removed as owners of the mine. Although the liquidators did get an interdict that prevents Goldrich to remove anything from the mine, the company is still legally in possession of the mine until the other interdict is granted. He added, however, that the liquidators are currently negotiating with Goldrich’s business rescue team to see whether a settlement cannot be reached over the money that Goldrich is still owing for the mine. According to Roering, workers who have not been paid by Goldrich were so enraged that they barricaded the road to the mine’s offices last week. In the meantime, various issues linked to the mine were raised by the protesters that stormed the housing offices in another protest, which took place on 19 March. In the memorandum given over, the protesters identified themselves as members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). The issues raised included the fact that workers were not paid money alle-
gedly owed to them for long service; the fact that the village was allegedly sold without proper consultation with the workers; and the fact that there was no proper security for employees and residents. Municipality attending to potholes Adele Louw
The Merafong City Local Municipality indicated that it is looking into the pothole problems in the area. Many residents from all over Merafong have been up in arms over the increasing number of potholes in the area. Many of the potholes have also grown deeper after the past month’s good rainfall. A spokesman for the municipality responded this week to questions about the matter, after previously also indicating that the problem was being dealt with. According to the municipality, a contractor is doing the repairs on behalf of the municipality. “The contractor started in Carletonville, where the majority of potholes have been fixed. The remaining potholes should be fixed within the week,”
the municipal spokesman indicated on Tuesday, adding that a second team would commence this week in Khutsong. “The first team to finish will proceed to Fochville, and the next team to finish will move to Wedela.” Priority has been given to major streets upon which the largest traffic volume is carried. The spokesperson also indicated that the extent of the pothole damage has been identified. “The contractors are using hot premix. In some areas we have temporarily filled the potholes with clay - but these potholes will be permanently fixed as soon as the contractors get to them,” the municipal spokesperson said. According to the municipality, it would like to request the public for patience in the matter and to pay additional attention when nearing areas where road works are in progress.

Adele Louw The Department of Education this week confirmed that disciplinary action was taken against the principal and another staff member at Letsatsing Combined School. The Herald reported last week that learners protested in front of the school on March 13. They complained that some teachers still practise corporal punishment and were very unhappy that their parents, many of whom do not have a lot of money, allegedly have to pay extra for them to participate in extra-school activities or services, such as the use of the school’s computers. They also indicated that about two weeks’ ago several police vehicles arri-

Mizchif was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe. He moved to Syracuse, New York at the age of 12 where he hooked up with a crew, Soul Pack, and began rapping. He moved to South Africa at 18, where he released his debut album “Life” from “All Angles” in 1999 on Eargasm Records. It was well received and had classics like “Place for a Wife” and “Fashionable” which at the time got constant airplay on several TV music channels across Africa. Mizchif presented hip hop news on YFM. He was also a video jockey on Nasty, a hip hop show on MNET music channel, Channel O. In 2001 Mizchif teamed up with Mavusana from kwaito group Oda Meeste, for the album Summertime on Ghetto Ruff records which had the infectious hit “Summertime”. He is the funky, trendy and vibrant rap musician who has travelled the world, some of his international acts include: Black August Event - New York, Africa Unite-Sweden - Germany and even Nelson Mandela’s Birthday - Russia.

Human Rights day Nosiphiwo Matsalo Last week Friday, 21 March, we celebrated Human Rights day — a day we were reminded of the Sharpville Massacre. It made me so grateful to live in the new South Africa because of the sacrifices made, which now enable us to be allowed to do what we want; to live our dreams. Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. Human rights are the rights to be treated humanely. The right simply to live. Many countries do not allow for these simple human rights; but I think we should be grateful that we live in a free country. However, I sometimes feel our human rights are begin violated in some parts of the country in

Soccer matches drawing many players Adele Louw
During the past weekend soccer matches started as part of leagues organised by the Merafong City Local Football Association. According to this organisation’s development officer, Hloni Kharejane, several matches took part in Wedela. In the u/13 matches, Killer Stars thrashed Kusasalethu 6 - 0 while Wedela Celtics beat Big Surprise 3 - 1. Blyvoor Evergreen walked over Golden Stars with a score of 11 - 1. In the u/15 matches played at the same venue, Killer Stars gave Kusasalethu a hiding with a score of 18 - 0.
Big Surprise beat Wedela Celtics 2 0 while Blyvoor Evergreen beat Golden Stars 6 - 4. Several matches were also played at Khutsong. In the u/15 matches played at this venue, K.S. Young Stars beat Merafong All Stars 8 - 0 while Fast Eleven beat Dynamos 2 - 1. The match between Young Swallows and Maestro ended in a draw when both teams scored two goals each. In the meantime, two players from Maestro Football Club in Khutsong, Bongani Maphalala and Karabo Machobane, will be taking part in the Nike International Soccer-Skills Com-
petition that will be held at the Soweto Nike Stadium in Bramfisherville on 29 March. During this event, the local youngsters will come up against players from all over Africa as well as some other countries. Bongani is a learner of Relebogile Secondary School while Karabo attends Phororong Primary School. Kharejane adds that there are also three players from Merafong who will be representing the Gauteng u/16 squad during the national u/16 championships that will be held on April 6. Merafong City Krieketklub se vrouespan het onlangs tweede in hul liga geeindig. Dié span, die laaste Merafong-span wat steeds in dié liga-seisoen aan die speel was, het op 16 Maart teen Pukke
op hul tuisveld in Potchefstroom te staan gekom. Merafong het na die finaal deurgedring na hul laaste vorige wedstryd, wat teen Lichtenburg beslis sou word, uitgereën het. Omdat Merafong die tweede meeste punte in hul liga gehad het, het hulle outomaties vir die finaal gekwalifiseer. Op die ou end

Fochville se Maass ‘n Argus-veteraan Adele Louw Min mense weet dat Fochville se bekendste polisieman ook ‘n uithaler-fietsryer in sy vrye tyd is. Hennie Maass, wat as kolonel Maass reeds vir jare die stasiekommissaris van Fochville-polisiestasie is, het onlangs sy 16de Argusfietstoer voltooi. Maass vertel dat sy liefde vir fietsry al kleintyd begin het toe hy so op 11-jarige ouderdom met ‘n blou Raleigh - fietsie wat sy pa vir R2 gekoop het, heen en weer tussen die skool en hul huis in Upington se spoorwegkamp gery het. paar jaar nie meer lus om met die fiets skool toe te ry nie en het om dié rede tydelik sy wiele opgehang. Die fietsry-gogga het hom eers weer in 1996 gebyt toe sy broer, wat in daardie stadium in Bloemfontein gewoon het, vir homself ‘n bergfiets gekoop het. “Ek het so ‘n draai op sy fiets gery en die hele fietsry-ding het weer vir my lekker begin lyk,” vertel Maass. Op die ou end het Maass vir hom ‘n padfets gekoop en die volgende jaar ernstig begin ry. Volgens hom het hy aanvanklik by fietsryers wat hy tydens ander wedrenne teëgekom het, van die Argus gehoor. “Ek het glad nie geweet wat om te verwag nie,” vertel Maass, en voeg by dat dié eerste Argus toe op die oud end sy lekkerste een ooit was. Hy het dié kronkelrige roete, wat hom die dag voor die wedren bykans ‘n hele dag geneem het om met sy motor te voltooi, in ‘n tyd van 04:02:30 voltooi. Tydens dié jare was die Argus nog baie kleiner as wat dit nou is. Die afgelope Argus-fietstoer, wat op 9 Maart oor 109 km beslis is, het sowat 35 000 fietsryers van regoor die wêreld gelok, wat dit die grootste fietstoer ter wêreld maak. Maass het deur die jare bykans aan elke Argus deelgeneem. Hy moes egter in 2001 die fietstoer misloop omdat hy die vorige jaar ‘n rugoperasie moes ondergaan. Die toer van 2000 was volgens Maass een van sy moeilikstes
ooit omdat hy die hele tyd in pyn as gevolg van sy ernstige rugprobleem was. Dié Argus was ook sy stadigste na hy in ‘n tyd van 04:31:28 klaargemaak het. Nóg ‘n baie moeilike Argus was die toer van 2009 toe ‘n uiters sterk wind ryers opdraend gegee het. “’n Mens het letterlik gesit en kyk hoe van die ryers se fietse onder hulle uitgewaai word,” vertel Maass. Hy het dié Argus in ‘n tyd van 04:28:21 voltooi. Sy vinnigste Argus was die toer van 2006 toe hy in ‘n tyd van 03:28:23 klaargemaak het. Hoewel Maass aan talle ander wedrenne, soos die Momentum 94.7-kragmeting deelneem, bly die Argus vir hom die lekkerste. “’n Deel van die pret is die voorbereiding en die feit dat ‘n mens al die pad Kaap toe ry. Daar is geen ander wedren wat só ‘n mooi roete het nie,” sê Maass. Tussendeur al die pret het hy deur die jare sy broer wat hom aanvanklik in fietsry laat belangstel het, heeltemal uitgestof. Hy het ook sy liefde vir die sport aan sy sesjarige drieling, Alicia, Amorie en Theo, begin oordra. Dié kleingoed het reeds die kinder-afdelings van ‘n paar wedrenne op hul fietsies voltooi. “Die lekkerte van fietsry is iets wat jy nie kan beskryf aan iemand wat dit nog nie gedoen het nie, “ vertel Maass. “Dit laat ‘n mens ontspan en maak jou weer lus vir alles. Sonder die fietsry sou ek seker al lankal mal gewees het,” skerts hy.
