The mayor of the Merafong City Local Municipality, Ms Maphefo Mogale-Letsie, visited several schools after the matric results were released. Here she and the principal of Badirile Secondary School, Dr. Thabang Dhlamini, met some of this school’s enthusiastic matrics.

Mayor motivates schools Adele Louw The mayor of Merafong City Local Municipality, Ms. Maphefo Mogale-Letsie, went on ‘roadshow’ of her own after the release of the matric results last week. The Mayor, together with some other municipal officials as well as two employees of AngloGold Ashanti, visited several schools in the area last Thursday morning. The first stop was Badirile Secondary School, who increased their results to a pass rate of 78,78 % from last year’s 69%. Badirile’s achievement was also special as it was the school that was hit the worst by the border dispute problems that erupted in Khutsong a few years ago. The next stop was Relebogile Secondary School, Khutsong’s best performer with a pass rate of 86%, followed by Wedela Technical School, which also excelled with 88,29 %. This school had a pass rate of only 47,7% in 2009. Next on this list was Thuto-Kitso Secondary School in Kokosi, which, despite obtaining a pass rate of 68%, which was exactly the same as last year, walked of with the dubious title of Merafong worst performing school for this year. The group also made a stop at Letsatsing Combined School in East Driefontein, which despite the fact that it had its first matric group this year, managed to obtain a pass rate of 93%.

The last stop was Carleton Jones Secondary School, which had excelled with a pass rate of 99,4%. Various interesting stories came to light during the course of the day, such as that Letsatsing’s matrics had held after hours study groups, regularly monitored by teachers, throughout the course of last year and that all the matrics from this school slept over and studied at the school from the start to the end of their final examination. A variety of other motivational stories, most of them related to the extra lengths that teachers and matrics went to to obtain good results, were also heard during the course of the day. The mayor also motivated why she had not only visited schools which had performed well, but also the worst-performing school in the area. “We want them to know that we have not forgotten them and are there to help if possible,” the mayor said after the visit to Thuto-Kitso. During the course of the day the mayor and officials also offered assistance to schools, such as making municipal buildings available for after hours study groups. The two AngloGold Ashanti employees, messrs. Ben Matela and Trevor Samuel, also talked to schools about possible assistance such as computers and even indicat-

ed that this company would be able to give bursaries to some of the top achievers who had not yet been assisted with their further studies. Problems raised during the course of the day included lack of or inadequate computer centres, unequipped laboratories, lack of parental involvement and poor attendance of students to intervention programmes. On the same evening, the Mayor held a special gala dinner for the top achievers and their teachers and parents. “The 2011 results also show that we need to improve the support to schools. We must acknowledge that there is poor contribution from parents in many of our schools in the entire Merafong City. Management in our schools is often weak and lacks leadership and commitment. We still face major challenges in the townships and need to strengthen our interventions in this area. In 2012 we shall strengthen support to schools to ensure that the class of 2012 shows a significant improvement,” the mayor told the

The same evening the mayor held a special function for all the top performers. Here she met with them as well as some Rotary Exchange students WHO had arrived back home from Brazil earlier the same day. group during the course of the evening. “What is encouraging is that there are some learners though faced with challenging circumstances, they still performed exceptionally well. Therefore we need to affirm the class of 2011 learners in terms of resilience, discipline and perseverance,” she added.
