description Unipro Food Service is the largest food distributor in the world and is headquartered in Atlanta. The company is restructuring and restacking from 2 floors to one floor in an entire floor interior renovation. The new office is outfitted with a full test-kitchen, conference suite, open office area, huddle rooms, private offices, and a large breakroom and lounge are.

The design team leaned into UniPro being in the food service industry and designed with the concept of food and food distribution in mind with integrated elements of wood and stainless steel throughout.

Breakroom

A galley kitchen is situated behind a booth area. The breakroom doubles as a large gathering space.

Concept development, schematic design, design development, construction documents. Selected finishes and presented to CEO of UniPro. Specified and created furniture bid package and selected corresponding furniture pieces and finishes. Created 3D renderings using Revit rendering cloud. I saw project through 100% construction drawings and construction was conducted after I left the company.

Test Kitchen

The Test Kitchen is a feature for UniPro and allows them to bring clients in to test their foods in the office. It is adjacent to the reception and breakroom for ease of access.

Reception

The “U” in Unipro was turned on its side and incorporated as the transaction counter for the reception desk. Wood crates behind the desk are a nod to shipping crates seen in grocery stores and feature some of UniPro’s products.

description Harry Norman Realtors new Midtown Atlanta office takes inspiration from their diverse real estate portfolio they manage by create an office space resemblant of the “journey through the home”. Each space takes on a different experience inspired by what you might experience in a residential home. As residential realtors, Harry Norman wanted to mimic that feeling of walking into a new home when you walk into their Midtown office. The office is equipped with unique conference rooms, large meeting spaces, and an open office workstation area for realtors to touchdown at hoteling stations.

size 122,500 sf - 2 floors

Part of Fort Worth ISDs bond language was to design environments that encouraged sustainability and a connection to nature. With that in mind, the concept of segmenting the building into biomes and designing the segments with characteristics from their assigned biome was established.

This new construction elementary school serving 1,000 students grade prek-5th grade serves as an innovative approach to an elementary school through interior courtyards, outdoor terraces, dual-function community spaces, and interconnectivity between grades. The topography of the undeveloped site allowed an opportunity to use the natural grades as a means to split the building into two levels with exterior access on both floors.

I started this project at schematic design and saw it through 100% construction documents. I was the lead interior designer and contributed to concept development, space planning, finish selection, and drawing responsibilities in addition to delegating to younger project team members.

Level 00 has exterior access on the south side adjacent to open collaboration nooks within the double loaded corridor. The central double-volume library space grounds the angled classroom bars.

Each segment of the building will reflect certain characteristics and information about its assigned biome. Each biome was given a color palette with concept images to help develop any potential wall graphics and learning exhibits.

Classroom Corridors & Collaboration

The corridors are more than just circulation space and have a variety of museum-like exhibits, wall graphics and technology that will convey information about the biome they are in. The above image is an example of the aquatic biome and how it interacts with the tundra biome above through the slab opening that connects the two levels.

Media Center

Through the main entry, you walk directly into the double-volume media center that the building revolves around. The fluidity of the plan allows for visibility into various spaces and corridors.

Media Center

A main feature of the media center is the playful slide. Interior courtyards flank either side of the media center for outdoor learning and secure outdoor environments.

description Ursuline Academy is undergoing a large 5 phase addition and renovation to their existing campus. The school aimed to expand upon their innovative teaching methods by providing state of the art facilties and classrooms for their students similar to what they might find on collegiate campuses. The east campus, or Phase 02, consists of a new construction building containing english & humanities, art, engineering, and fine arts. The building is split into 4 areas with construction sequencing working in a clockwise motion in order for the most immediate needed classrooms in Areas A&B being completed first in August of 2021 and Area C&D scheduled for completion in January 2022.

role I joined the Ursuline project team during schematic design after the master plan was completed. I was the sole interior designer working hand in hand with the Senior Project Designer, Managing Principal, Senior Project Manager, and Project Architect. I was responsible the space plan of Areas A&B, overall design choices, finish selections, and specification/coordination of furniture.

I saw Areas A&B through construction administration including RFIs, submittal review and approval, regular site visits, and interior punch list.

The space plan of the Level 02 Classroom Bar breaks the typical double-loaded corridor norm and encourages students to circulate through the space more organically by forcing students to choose which part of the building they want to experience. The north side features more quite and focused study spaces while the south encourages collaboration between students.

This collaboration area features large glazing that overlooks the new theater and large exterior courtyard.

ursuline academy - east campus

Distributed Dining

The east campus sits far from the main dining hall on the west campus, so a grab-n-go distributed dining services students while they are on the east campus. It includes an exterior dining area in addition to interior dining.

Theater

With Ursuline’s existing performing arts theater is housed in a renovated gymnasium, the school sought to build a 1,000 seat theater with a pre-function lobby and associated drama, dance, and music classrooms adjacent to the new theater.

The theater includes state-of-the-art lighting, rigging systems, half fly loft, and sound systems for students taking drama classes to get a hands on experience with running a theatrical show.

Once complete, the theater will be able to house the entire Ursuline Academy student body population which they have not been able to do with their current facilities.

ursuline academy - east campus

URSULINE ACADEMY WEST CAMPUS dallas, tx

description Ursuline Academy is undergoing a large 5 phase addition and renovation to their existing campus. The west campus is the schools main campus and encompasses 4 of the 5 planned phases. Phase 01 was a swing space to make room for Phase 02 and was completed in April of 2020. In Phase 03, the school wanted to expand and renovate their existing dining hall on Level 01 and add President/ Development and Business/Finance suites on Level 00. Phase 04 consists of renovated chapel, renovated deans and principals office as well as an interior finish renovation in the main corridors of the oldest part of campus.

Phase 05 is a renovation to the schools existing theater to convert it back to a gymnasium and adding a new weight and strength training room.

Existing Dining Hall

The existing dining hall was dark, outdated, and too small for the current study body population. The acoustics were also an issue due to the hard glazed brick floors and brick walls. The main goals of the renovation were to expand seating capacity, update servery lines, and address acoustic concerns.

New Floor Plan

Renovation

The dining hall addition and renovation allowed for the school to go from three lunch periods to two with the space allowing seating for appx.. 500 students. The expanded servery lines allow for more efficient distribution of food and more space for lines to queue.

New Dining Hall Renovation & Addition

The renovated portion of the dining hall celebrates the existing wood trusses, pitched roof, and skylights by opening up previously segmented portions of the space to make one large gathering space. The acoustic ceiling treatment pays tribute to the existing wood roof decking while performing at a much higher acoustic level that before. Large round tables, bar top tables, small square, and booth seating allow for variety of seating in the space.

Phase 03 President/Development and Business/Finance Suite

The President/Development and Business/Finance offices were previously in a separate building away from the main campus making it difficult for students and guests to access. This area previously housed the art department, so with those classrooms moving to Phase 02, these administration spaces were able to move in and take advantage of the addition to the dining hall above and double their administration space.

Phase 04 Chapel

The school’s existing chapel space was demolished to make room for Phase 02 so the new chapel will located in the old music room, which is now in Phase 02. The chapel features salvaged stained glass windows from the old chapel that surround the altar at the front of the space. The chapel is also intended to function as a flex classroom.

Phase 05 Weight Room & Athletics

The existing theater is located in a retrofitted gymnasium, so once the new theater is built, the retrofitted gymnasium will be converted back to a functioning gymnasium and add a weight and strength training room.

NISD MIDDLE SCHOOL #7 haslet, tx

The city of Haslet’s name originates from the series of railroads and railway interchanges where trains would have to be let through the interchanges through a strategic and thoughtfully planned complex series of tracks. “Has let” turned into the cities namesake Haslet.

description In the growing Northwest ISD district, the new construction Middle School #7 (name to be determined) will support 1,200 students in grades 6-8. The school features 3 academic wings for each grade, an elective and specials wing, 2 practice gyms, 1 completion gym and associated support spaces, cafeteria and servery, administration suite, and a large central library space that the school circulates around.

role I started this project at schematic design and saw it through Issue for Bid and Permit drawings. I was the lead interior designer and contributed to concept development, finish selection, and drawing responsibilities in addition to delegating to younger project team members.

Renderings by Atchain

The site backs up to a railroad, lending the building to the concept of organizing the building so that the symbolic series of pathways (railways) that students take during their daily educational journeys is reflected in the building circulation. The building uses the central and open library (train station) as the main hub for connectivity and collaboration for the whole school.

As with a train interchange and terminal hub, there are certain points while a student is circulating through the building where they will need to make a decision which path to take next. Those major interchange points and paths create a diagram in which the flooring pattern was designed.

From the above diagram, a floor pattern with a light field LVT and a dark gray accent LVT acting as the path create a series of interchanges for students to follow as they walk through the building.

Library

The central library can be freely circulated around on all sides and experience from both levels. The learning stair faces a large display for teaching and learning. The 3 orange collaboration rooms, or “cabooses”, mimics train cars as a nod to the railroad design concept while providing private, but open focus spaces.

Library & Cafeteria

Built in elements on the perimeter of the loosely defined library space ground the space while still allowing for free movement around and through it. The library is adjacent to the cafeteria making this central area a hub for activity.

description This addition to Amon Carter Riverside’s existing campus contains the school’s CTE, fine arts, performing arts, and athletics programs under one roof. The media center is split between a 3 story atrium with the main stacks area on Level 02.

The media center surrounds the main atrium and stair with the stacks and resource area being located on the second floor.

Level 03 Atrium

The central atrium and media center that the building revolves around allows for every student to have an opportunity to interact with the media center.

Level 01

Programs like robotics and engineering are put on display to market those programs to students. Garage doors are used on both the interior and the exterior to open up classrooms to larger spaces for more activities.

The school colors are used in a strategic manner with the blue being used as a means to guide people as they circular and red being used to highlight areas of importance such as the career center, central stair, and classrooms.

Existing Entrance

The original entrance was not being used as the main access point, so in the renovation the reception and attendances offices will flank this entrance.

November 2021

description Amon Carter Riverside High School was built in 1936 and the original building had not been updated since that time. A campus master plan concept of creating an internal quad connecting the original building and the new construction addition encouraged a heavy renovation to the 1936 building and creating a central axis out to the new internal quad. This required eliminating the original central stair and adding an exterior access point to the new quad. Additional corridor finish updates and restroom updates to make them accessible were also included in this transformative renovation.

This stair lies on the axis of the original entrance and will be demolished in the renovation to allow for access to the new internal quad and new construction addition.

I worked on this project from schematic design through construction. The schools mascot is the Hornets so the planning concept used the idea of a hornets nest and using solid vs void to create interior and exterior space. The center of the plan houses all community spaces that buzz with activity while the classrooms are on the perimeter of the building for maximum visibility to natural daylight.

description As a replacement building for the existing Hawthorne Elementary school, Dallas ISD aimed to create a new construction building outfitted with interactive and innovative spaces.

The school features a gym/stage combination, library with a maker space, distributed collaboration spaces, double volume cafeteria, administration, and classrooms for prek-5th grade.

The second floor has more classrooms in addition to science labs and a library with a directly adjacent maker space.

The school colors are yellow and black so warm reds, oranges, and yellows are used in community spaces while cool greens and blues are used in classrooms to represent inside vs outside of a hive. The Hornet mascot lent itself to a hexagonal motif that is seen in the carpet pattern and acoustic ceilings.

Entry

Like a hornet’s hive, there is a playful movement to the exterior with solids and voids and changing colors.

Gymnasium & Stage

The gym sits within the central “hive” area and uses the hexagon motif and yellow school colors to inspire school spirit.

The gym also doubles as a storm shelter with ICC 500 rated glass to allow for some natural light into the space.

An interior courtyard sits in the middle of the building that connects the media center and cafeteria to one another while providing a protected outdoor learning space.

With the planning concept of solid vs void, you are able to experience one side of the building from the other through.

Collaboration spaces across from classrooms allow for teachers to monitor students through glazing into classrooms.

description The existing library at JJ Pearce High School was outdated and did not meet current district standards. The library was fully renovated with collaboration and engagement in mind. The majority of the library’s book capacity is digital which allowed for less stacks area and more district teaching and learning areas.

Existing Plan

The existing plan of the library proved several issues with the ability to not reconfigure the space as the largest issue. The oversized circulation desk was underutilized and was not located to where the librarian could monitor who was coming in and out of the main library entry. The workroom and ancillary library support spaces took up a considerable amount of the overall floor area and were underutilized.

New Plan

The new plan reclaims previously under utilized square footage and redistributes it back to spaces that can be used by students. Support spaces and collaboration rooms were pushed to the perimeter of the plan to allow for more flexibility in the open floor space. Three distinct teaching and learning spaces allow for classes to effectively use the library as an additional classroom.

The furniture defines the space while still being either on casters or lightweight enough to easily reconfigure.

The large graphic provides a focal point for the library and celebrates the Mustang school spirit.

Students are able to pick the environment in which they want to study, collaborate or learn.

The library opens up to Mustang Market through a glass folding partition. The market is located in a previously unused space behind a stair. The Marketing class runs the market and sells various grab-n-go cafe items to fund class trips.

From booths, to low tables and chairs, to lounge furniture, to enclosed collaboration rooms, the updated Pearce library caters to any students experiential needs.

description JJ Pearce High School had a series of additions added on to the building over the years that made the floor plan maze-like and hard to navigate.

To create more order to the floor plan and overall school circulation patterns, JJ Pearce is undergoing a large full campus renovation and addition that includes a new gym, interior finish updates to all corridors, classroom expansion, fine arts expansion, new dining and central gathering area, culinary arts, robotics, construction trades, and various other career centered programs CTE.

To clean up the maze-like circulation and series of never ending corridors, a central axis with new entries at both he north and south of the building were created to provide hierarchy to the plan.

role I joined the project team as lead interior designer during design development and established a design concept, designed the commons/dining area, and lead overall design moves to be executed by the project team. I saw the project through 50% Construction Documents.

The concept of kinetic(blue) vs potential(red) energy splits the building in half at the central axis point. The kinetic side includes core classrooms and focus spaces, where the red houses the future focused and career ready programs.

The campus currently has two separate dining halls that are not conducive to serving the entire student body. The new central commons/dining area sea 1,000 students split between two levels and is located in a former interior courtyard space. The commons is directly adjacent to the main entry, servery, culinary arts, and CTE programs. This allows for the commons to be used as a multifunction space that the student body can gather around.

The robotics classroom features a large open space outside of the classroom accessible through a glass folding partition. All CTE programs are put on display to celebrate the programs and draw attention to them.

Collaboration

Within the classroom corridors are various types of collaboration spaces that feature open spaces with flexible furniture and built in counters designed to work with the various level changes in some of the existing parts of the building.

description Alcuin School needed a new building for their Upper School International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. The school’s Montessori roots and small class size allowed for a variety of classrooms types and collaboration spaces. This is the first phase with the following phases including a multipurpose theater/gathering space, more classrooms, and various administration spaces.

Principals of biophilia were utilized when selecting finishes and patterns. concept OU Downtown is a campus that fosters innovation and collaboration while still maintaining the core values of higher education implemented by the University of Oklahoma system. Design elements of the Norman campus are be used to remind occupants of the universities roots. This idea is directly reflected into the campus by space allocation, adjacencies, FFE and finishes. Color is used as an identifier for the various space types.

A mix of traditional and non-traditional teaching and learning practices will be implemented to give variety to both students and faculty.

The University of Oklahoma Downtown branch campus is focused on nontraditional education paths for a large demographic of student types.

The campus is located in the newly renovated Century Center building in the thriving Business District of downtown OKC. Degrees from the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Liberal Arts allows students to start or continue their higher education in an environment that caters to each individual student’s own educational goals and intentions.

The Century Center was chosen as the campus site based on location, function, and expansion opportunities. It was built in 1977 as a mall, was subsequently abandoned in the 1980’s, and was then renovated in 2012 into a multi-tenant facility. The building is located right in the heart of Downtown and is accessible to many attractions and businesses in the area. The campus can essentially be self contained and planned for future campus expansion. Two floors of parking on the upper floors of the building allow for both convenience and safety for the students of the campus.

The expansion opportunities of the Century Center is one of the main reasons that this site was chosen. The campus master plan concluded that a site was to be chosen with the possibility of expanding as student enrollment expands. OU plans to buy the building and continue to lease out space to current occupying tenants until the campus needs to expand.

Programming

Level 1 features 50% recreation spaces, 40% education spaces and 10% administration spaces. Level 2 features 60% education spaces, 35% administration spaces, and 5% recreation spaces. Levels 3 and 4 are parking levels with 75% of spaces reserved for OU Downtown and 25% reserved for other building tenants.

Demographics

The intent of the OU Downtown campus is to provide an equal opportunity education from the state’s flagship University to a wide range of student demographic types.

In addition to the ‘typical’ college student, working professionals in the downtown area, older students, and distance learners area the demographic that the university is most interested in serving as those students might need more focused and specialized education paths based on external factors such as existing careers or familial circumstances.

A wide selection of degree paths are offered at OU Downtown to allow students the same opportunities as the home Norman campus.

Campus Roots

OU Downtown is a contemporary addition to the University of Oklahoma system, but it must still embody what the university stands for. The University of Oklahoma Norman campus has a very recognizable style with the use of red brick, wood, and heavy architectural elements. It embodies the Cherokee Gothic style and blends classic collegiate architecture with Native American motifs. The campus blends historic architecture with new and innovative spaces seamlessly to create a campus that embraces both tradition and change. OU Downtown takes the same ideas as the Norman campus to create a campus that is both relevant and timeless.

The visual connectivity between floors and throughout the campus allows for maximum interaction between occupants.

The open forum learning stairs serves as a campus wide gathering space to hold events.

Lounges

The campus is equipped with 7 lounges that vary in size and function to allow for any student or faculty member to find the best place for them to work or study. The Mix lounge is the largest and most group oriented lounge with study rooms, state of the art technology, and interactive furniture solutions to enhance the collaborative learning experience.

Classrooms

Classrooms at OU Downtown function as active learning classrooms with each classroom situated with flexible furniture pieces that can be moved into any arrangement that professors and students desire. Flexible furniture, integrated state of the art technology and an interactive learning environment boost productivity and make the learning and teaching experience more enjoyable.

Visual transparency between classrooms and collabways allow for interaction outside of the classrooms as well as allows daylight into the interior of the building. The campus has small, medium and large classrooms as well as distance classrooms for online students and a lecture hall for large seminar classes.

Administration

Administration spaces include faculty/staff and student services offices as well as ancillary spaces. Hoteling workstations hold nomadic faculty/staff while private offices hold full time staff. Faculty/staff are also encouraged to use the lounges across the campus to meet with students, hold small study groups, and meet with other faculty/staff.

Collabways

Oversized corridors dubbed as” collabways” serve as multifunctional touchdown spaces for both students and faculty/staff to sit before class, meet after class, or just to relax between classes.

Furniture

All furniture selected is commercial grade and able to withstand high traffic wear and tear from students and faculty. Smooth surfaces make for easy cleanability and allow all surfaces to be used as worksurfaces. All fabrics on upholstered furniture is high wearability and bleach cleanable.

SAVE THE AMAZON institutional studio

Fall 16’ - 2 weeks | Miami, FL | 11,000 sf

challenge In a group of 3, design a museum and service learning center that teaches and prepares those going on service trips to the Amazon rain forest. Include a small apartment for the center director to live in. Design the space to be considered for LEED ID+C certification.

Design

Indigenous culture and creatures of the Amazon drove color choice, form, pattern, and overall aesthetic. The juxtaposition of circular and linear create positive and negative space that imitate that of the Amazon rainforest.

Around the core are information points that educate on the Amazon rain forest.

The classroom acts as an open forum classroom with stepped seating visual access to the rest of the center. The directors apartment has access directly to the museum and to the exterior.

The Amazon rain forest is the most self sustaining ecosystem on Earth and is a constant provider for all forms of life. The Save the Amazon Center focuses on what the Amazon does for the Earth and turns this into a physical representation demonstrating how much revolves around the Amazon rain forest.. The large sculptural piece in the central gathering space acts as a metaphorical symbol for what the Amazon contributes to the Earth.

Materials and FFE were chosen based on their sustainable qualities and LEED points.

Museum

Each information point highlights on different contributions that the amazon makes to the Earth. The linear separation from the central space mimics looking through the trees in the rain forest.

The information points revolve around a central gathering space that immerses visitors into an environment that mimics the Amazon. The colorful pieces on the black ceiling are the South American countries that make up the Amazon.

Classroom

The stepped seating in the classroom allows for both a casual and interactive learning environment.

challenge Create an innovative and collaborative office for a global architecture firm using Steelcase furniture while incorporating evidence based design theories and considering the cultural and locational context of Los Angeles, CA.

solution NEXT uses a free address work environment and offers a multitude of work areas, surfaces, and niches for workers to experiment with.

Pinup spaces, layout areas, and quick touchdown areas are spread throughout to encourage collaboration.

The furniture varies to ensure employees can work where they feel most comfortable. The composition of the office is split between loud, collaborative spaces and quieter, focus spaces.

concept An ecosystem is a cyclical system comprised of components that each offer a crucial contributing factor to a community in a physical environment.

Each component of an ecosystem cultivates the other components, leading to a cohesive and successful environment. The city of Los Angeles cultivates it’s inhabitants to thrive due to the diverse components of it’s own ecosystem. The NEXT LA office’s functional environment is comprised of 4 ecosystem components: generate, initiate, separate, and congregate spaces. Each ecosystem space within NEXT caters to specific activities crucial to office environment.

Site

NEXT is located in downtown LA on the 32nd floor of the AT&T Center. Factors like the building orientation and NEXT being the only occupant of the floor allows for views of both urban and nature environments.

As with ecosystems in nature, the NEXT ecosystem thrives when all factors are working in harmony with one another to create successful environment.

Congregate: allow for large or small groups to come together socialize and collaborate.

Separate: allow for employees to seclude themselves away from others when they need a break away from noise and visual stimulation.

Initiate: allows for employees to create new ideas and relationships.

Generate: foster production and creation of tangible objects used for ideation and presentations.

Urban Nature

An environment in which urbanity and nature coincide with each to create a diverse environment of landscape, people, and aesthetic.

Los Angeles is an urban city surrounded by nature. The NEXT office incorporates exposed structural elements and smooth surfaces that encourage urbanity while a nature inspired color palette, organic shapes, and textural materials reflect nature. Biophilic principles are implemented to encourage a connection to nature while indoors.
