Jote de cabeza negra / Coragyps atratus

Nombre común: jote.

Vive en todos los ambientes del territorio chileno, desde el Norte hasta la Isla de Tierra del Fuego.

Una leyenda de origen Kawésqar cuenta que una vez en la isla de Tierra del Fuego, cuando no había noche, cazadores furtivos recorrieron la vastedad del territorio matando al hombre-jote y sus familias. Sin comprender la razón, mujeres, niños y hombres fueron cazados, ejecutados y arrojados a una gran fosa. Pero un hombre- jote sobrevivió, levanto vuelo y describiendo círculos cada vez más grandes llegó muy cerca del sol, al que tapó con sus alas.

Se produjo entonces la primera noche del mundo y en esa oscuridad total pudo huir y salvar su vida.

En el archipiélago de Chiloé se asegura que cuando un jote se posa sobre la cruz de una iglesia y despliega sus alas, es señal de que en los próximos días morirá alguien de la comunidad. La dirección de su mirada indicará además desde que punto cardinal vendrá el funeral. Si es visto posado sobre el mástil de una embarcación alguien de la tripulación morirá.

Los Mapuches dicen que los brujos se convierten frecuentemente en jotes y en este estado se reúnen al interior del bosque. Si por tan mala fortuna quien atraviesa la floresta se topa con ellos, padecerá muchos sufrimientos en el futuro.

Jote de cabeza negra / Coragyps atratus

Common name: Jote.

Is to be found in every corner of Chile, from the North down to the Tierra del Fuego.

A legend of Kawésqar origin recounts that long ago on the Island of Tierra del Fuego when night never fell, poachers travelled about this vast region killing the hombre-Jote and his family. Uncomprehending women, children and men were hunted down, killed and thrown into a big pit. But one hombre-Jote survived, took flight, and flying in ever larger circles came close to the sun which he covered with his wings. Thus came about the world's first ever night, and he took advantage of this total darkness in order to flee and save his life.

In the Chiloé archipelago it is said that when a Jote alights on the cross of a church and unfolds his wings, it is a sign that a member of the community will die in a few days' time. The direction in which he looks indicates moreover from which point of the compass the funeral will arrive. If he is seen alighting on a ship's mast, a member of the crew will die.

The Mapuches say that it happens frequently that witches change into Jotes and meet thus in the middle of the forest. Should someone have the misfortune to come upon them while crossing the forest, he will have to endure much suffering in the future.

Bandurria / Theristicus melanopis

Nombres Comunes: Bandurria, Raki por su voz onomatopéyica.

Habita en praderas de pastoreo, pampas, y campos agrícolas desde el Río Loa a Tierra del Fuego.

Si una bandurria cruza revoloteando delante del viajero, es de buen augurio aseguran en el archipiélago de Chiloé. Entonces, se llegará a buen destino sin sobresaltos.

Raki la llaman los Mapuches. Su presencia en las praderas indicaba abundancia de Lauu, una papa silvestre muy apetecida.

Los Yámanas le decían Lejuhua y al verlas aproximarse, a baja altura, las niñas adolescentes escapaban y se cubrían los senos, pues si ella los veía crecerían demasiado.

Lejuhua no debía ser molestada porque su tranquilidad aseguraba periodos de buen tiempo. Una vez, perturbada por el bullicio que producían los humanos, lanzó vientos huracanados, aguaceros y tormentas de nieve que cubrieron la tierra. Solo después de mucho tiempo las nieves de las montañas se derritieron y reaparecieron los ríos, lagos y canales. Pero en los valles profundos se formó hielo eterno, que dio origen a los ventisqueros, los que aun permanecen como testimonios de aquel desastre.

Bandurria / Theristicus melanopis

Common names: Bandurria, Lejuhua. Raki (onomatopoeia for his cry) Lives in grassy meadows, prairies and on agricultural land between the Río Loa and the Tierra del Fuego.

In the Chilean archipelago they assert that if a Bandurria flutters across the traveller's path this is a good sign and he will arrive at his destination without problem.

The Mapuches called him Raki. His presence in the meadows is a sign of abundant Lauu, a very tasty wild potato.

The Yámanas used to say Lejuhua, and if they saw him flying low, adolescent girls would flee covering their breasts because if the bird caught sight of them they would grow in exaggerated fashion.

The Lejuhua had not to be disturbed because his tranquillity was a guarantee of good weather. Should he be upset by human din, he would create hurricane winds, downpours and snowstorms all over the earth, and it would take a long time for the mountain snow to melt and for the rivers, lakes and canals to reappear. In deep-lying valleys however, there would lie eternal snows, the snowdrifts bearing witness to that disaster.

Bauda / Nycticorax nycticorax

Nombres comunes: Huairavo, Bauda, Buiravo, Voladora, Huac.

Habitante crepuscular de ríos, canales, estuarios y ambientes acuáticos en todo el territorio chileno.

Una reencarnación del Huichanalhue decían los Mapuches que era; de un ser creado por los brujos con huesos, uñas y dientes robados de una sepultura, al que se le "engancha" el alma de un muerto reciente.

En el archipiélago de Chiloé encarna a la Voladora, hija de brujos, que domina el arte de transmutarse en Huac, para oficiar de mensajera de los iniciados volando de isla en isla. Cuando se escucha su grito al caer la noche se dice… "ya vienen los brujos por atrás".

En el crepúsculo, la Voladora se oculta en las sombras y bebe una pócima de Natri con aceite de lobo marino, y otra más de jugo de Huinque, que le inducen a vomitar sus entrañas. Alivianada sobrevuela entonces los caminos; si se escucha su grito como una carcajada burlona es señal que la próxima persona que pase morirá pronto. Si este grito es como el llanto de una mujer, es porque muchas desgracias afectarán a los que lo escuchan.

Si se posa en una lancha, alguien de la tripulación morirá o la embarcación trasladará en los próximos días un cadáver.

Al primer canto del gallo la Voladora recupera sus entrañas y su forma humana, frotándose el cuerpo con aceites y ungüentos secretos.

Bauda / Nycticorax nycticorax

Common names: Huairavo, Bauda, Buiravo, Voladora, Huac.

Twilight inhabitant of rivers, canals, estuaries and aquatic locations throughout the entire Chilean territory.

The Mapuches called him a reincarnation of the Huichanalhue - a being created by witches using bones, nails and teeth stolen from a grave, and "animated" by the spirit of someone recently passed away.

In the Chiloé archipelago he can take the form of La Voladora, a witch's daughter who has perfected the art of transforming herself into a Huac, serving as a messenger for initiates travelling from island to island. When her cry is heard at nightfall, it is said that "the witches are creeping up."

At twilight, the Voladora hides in the shadows and drinks a draught of "natre" (*) mixed with sealion oil, and another of "huinque" (*) juice, causing her to vomit her entrails. Thus lightened she flies above the tracks, and if one hears her cry, like a mocking chuckle, then this is a sign that the next passer-by will die shortly. Should this cry sound like a woman sobbing, this means that many misfortunes will befall those who hear it.

If she perches on the mast of a boat, a member of the crew will die, or the boat will shortly transport a dead body.

At first cock-crow, the Voladora recovers her entrails and her human form, anointing her body with oils and secret ointments. (*medicinal herbs) 16

Carpintero negro / Campephilus magellanicus

Nombres comunes: Carpintero negro, Gallo del monte, Rere, Pica maderas.

Habita al interior de bosques con abundancia de árboles maduros o muertos, desde el Río Cachapual hasta el Cabo de Hornos En Chiloé se afirma que el Gallo del monte anuncia aguaceros cuando es visto picoteando árboles en las afueras del bosque. Pero si los golpes retumban en la espesura y no se puede observar nada, es porque está con el Trauco dándole de picotazos y hachazos a un árbol muerto para derribarlo.

Los Mapuches lo llaman Rere. Aseguran que si los violentos picotazos que descarga sobre la corteza de los árboles son escuchados por el lado derecho de quien atraviesa el bosque, es señal de buen augurio y se tendrá buena suerte en el viaje.

En el antiguo territorio Yámana, al sur del canal Beagle en Tierra del Fuego, existe un mito en el que se cuenta que su cabeza roja fue pintada con frutos maduros y tierra colorante por su padre, para siempre, en castigo por las relaciones incestuosas que sostenía con su hermana. Desde entonces los hermanos viven en pareja, ocultos en los remotos bosques magallánicos.

Carpintero negro or Gallo del monte / Campephilus magellanicus

Common names: Carpintero negro, Gallo del Monte, Rere, Pica Maderas.

Lives in woods abounding in mature or dead trees, from the Río Cachapual to Cape Horn.

In Chiloé it is believed that the Gallo del Monte is announcing downpours when he is seen pecking at trees in the neighbourhood of the wood. If the blows are absorbed by the bark though no traces are to be seen, this is because he is working with the Trauco pecking and chopping a dead tree in order to fell it.

The Mapuches call him Rere. They assert that if his violent pecking at the tree bark is heard on the right-hand side by someone crossing the wood, this is a sign that the traveller will have good luck on his journey.

In the former Yámana territory South of the Beagle Canal in the Tierra del Fuego, there exists an old myth in which it is said that his red head was painted permanently with the juice of ripe fruit and coloured earth by his father as a punishment for his incestuous relationship with his sister. Since that time, brothers and sisters have lived as couples, hidden in the remote Magellán woods.

Cernícalo / Falco sparverius

Nombres comunes: Cernícalo, Lügllüken o Kelilke (mapuche), Ñancu o Ñanco (Chiloé) Habita en todo el territorio chileno y en ambientes diversos, pero prefiere los espacios despejados de vegetación con puntos altos de observación, desde donde pueda acechar con mayor eficiencia a sus presas.

Se trata de un halconcillo veloz y valiente, certero en la persecución de roedores, lagartijas y otras aves rapaces más grandes que él, con las que disputa territorios. En algunos sectores de la Isla Grande de Chiloé le llaman Quechi quechi ; en otros lugares del archipiélago se le reconoce como Quelén quelén. Algunos aseguran que se trata del Ñancu o Ñanco, un ave muy astuta que nunca ha sido cazada, de mal agüero, pues su presencia altiva y desafiante frente a una casa advierte la pronta muerte de por lo menos uno de los que allí viven.

Los mapuches lo honraban y se dice que más de algún cacique llevó su nombre con orgullo. Los guerreros solían engalanarse con sus plumas antes de ir a la batalla; estas les conferían más valor y destreza en la contienda.

También pasaban las plumas de Quechi quechi durante horas por el lomo y cuerpo de sus caballos, para que fueran más veloces y astutos en la refriega, para que en el ataque o la huida volaran más allá del galope.

Cernícalo / Kestrel Buzzard/ Falco sparverius

Common names: cernícalo, lügllüken or kelilke (mapuche); quechi quechi, quelén quelén, ñancu or ñanco (Chiloé) This bird inhabits the whole country in various habitats. It is found in open spaces with scarce vegetation and high observation points from which it stalks its prey.

This is a small and brave falcon; precise when hunting rodents and lizards, and facing other bigger birds of prey, if it is a matter of territory. In some areas of Isla Grande de Chiloé it is called quechi quechi; in other places of the island its name is quelén quelén. Some locals insist this bird is the ñancu o ñanco, quite a smart bird which has never been hunted; ñancu o ñanco brings bad luck: if it passes by a house it signals the death of one of the inhabitants.

The araucanos honour this bird, and it is said that more than one cacique (local native chief) proudly bore its name. Warriors used to wear its feathers before battle; these transferred them courage and skills for the fight. Araucanos also used to rub the back and legs of their horses with the kelike feathers so the horses would become wittier and faster in attacking or retrieving during conflict.

Cisne de cuello negro / Cygnus melanocorypha

Nombres comunes: Cisne de cuello negro, Kansu.

Habita todo tipo de zonas marinas: rios, lagunas, canales, estuarios y bahías protegidas, desde el Río Huasco a Tierra del Fuego.

En antiguos mitos dejados por los pueblos originarios de la Patagonia chilena, se relata que muchas de las aves que habitan estos territorios fueron antepasados mitad pájaros, mitad humanos, que luego evolucionaron y se transformaron en nuevos seres que poblaron la tierra.

Así, para los Tehuelches, el Cisne de cuello negro nació de una tormenta en la que un hombre-cisne desapareció en las gélidas aguas. Días después, cuando amainó el temporal, reapareció transformado en Kansu, con la misión de transportar a Elal, el hacedor de las cosas, hasta la cumbre del monte Chaltén.

Desde allí Elal dio forma a toda la naturaleza; a los seres vivientes que habrían de poblar el mundo creado por Kooch el eterno, el que siempre existió.

Elal estableció las estaciones del año, moldeo en arcilla al hombre y la mujer, creo las aves y animales, el fuego, la canoa, el arco y la flecha, necesarios para dominar los océanos y los vientos originados por Kooch con sus lágrimas y suspiros, durante la creación del mundo.

Cisne de cuello negro or Kansu / Cygnus melanocorypha

Common names: Cisne de cuello negro, Kansu Lives in every type of maritime environment: rivers, canals, lagoons, estuaries and protected bays from the Río Huasco to the Tierra del Fuego.

In ancient myths left behind by the indigenous peoples of Chilean Patagonia, it is said that many of the birds which live in these territories were half bird, half human ancestors who then evolved and transformed themselves into new earth-dwelling beings.

Thus, according to the Tehuelches, Kansu, el Cisne de Cuello Negro, was born in a storm during which a man-swan disappeared into the icy waters. Some days later, when the storm abated, he reappeared as a Kansu with the mission of transporting Elal, the Creator, to the summit of Mount Chaltén.

From thence, Elal gave form to everything in Nature and to the other living beings which were to people the earth created by Kooch who still existed.

Elal established the seasons of the year, molded in clay man and woman, created birds, animals, fire, the canoe, the bow and the arrow, necessary for the domination of the oceans and the winds created by Kooch with his tears and sighs during the creation of the world.
