1. Introduction

1.1 Overview

This documentation is made as part of competition by Student Reinventing Cities C40in responding to transform Thomastown into 20-minute neighbourhood. It provides detail on AREA 1, Greenway Avenue around Edgars Road of Thomastown Masterplan.

The main priority addressed in this area is to reduce urban heat island effect, provide pedestrian friendly streetscape, as well as increase connection for cycling path and pedestrian in order to promote lowcarbon lifestyle.

The intervention attempts to infers to multiple design principles including ecological design, healthy lifestyle, and safety. From these documentations, the proposal outcome transforms the streetscape of Edgars Road to add protected bike lane and transform the median strip into bioswale.

5. Master Plan Elements

5.1 Supporting drawings of site to illustrate key elements

Schematic of each area will be illustrated more detail in plan and section, with an additional image to represent the desired effect or character of the area. Ideas would be drawn from precedents.

Further development will be needed to finalise design specifics and details of each area.

AREA 1| Avenues, Greenway

Area 1 bring connection between commercial area to pedestrian. The design will include avenues of trees to mitigate effects of urban heat island along with shared use path near Edgars Road Shopping Center.

AREA 2| Shared path

Area 2 design also incorporate shared use path on both sides of sidewalk. Putting more focus on safety measures for school surveillance as well as pedestrian and cyclist movement for this area.

AREA 3| Pathway, main path

Area 3 creates a new main pathway that connects to many area. Providing more access for residents all around.

AREA 4| Public and Commercial area

Area 4 adds mixed use space by combining commercial space such as cafes and restaurants and public garden into one space. Putting the commercial space as the center, the garden also act as multipurpose space.

AREA 5| Bridge, Creek channel

Area 5 connects Edgars Creek trail with nearby residential area as well as creating space that encourage engagement with the creek. Existing ecologicy of Edgars Creek will be taken into consideration.

2. Existing Site Conditions

2.1 Existing Site Context

Thomastown is a suburb located approximately 16 km north of Melbourne City. Built next to Edgars Creek, the neighbourhood character is defined by post-war manufacturing infrastructure with a homogenous housing type consisting of low-rise, low-density housing. As typical suburb, 67% of Thomastown residence use cars as a way to meet their needs within the suburb.

There is public center located approximately 630 meters away from Thomastown Station, where community facilities are lined up along Main Street.

Edgars Road and Main Street act as the main axes of Thomastown. Since it is mainly composed of residential areas, other streets besides the two mentioned becomes more private, which increase barriers of access for people within this suburb. Due to this, Main Street and Edgars Road has become the only way for both pedestrians and vehicles to have access to public spaces. With a centralised community facilities and only two commercial area on the east edge and west edge of Main Street, meeting daily needs for local residents would take longer amount of time and less convenient, as there is heavy traffics on both Edgars Road and Thomastown train station.

2. Existing Site Conditions

2.2 Site surroundings

Edgars Road shopping Center is located on the west edge of the site. It is one of the only two commercial area lined along Main Street. Since 67% of Thomastown residents use cars as a mean to meet their needs, Edgars Road contains high level of car traffics.

There is a good range of public use space ranging from commercial area, and small health facilities lined along Edgars Road across each other. However, approximately half of the space is taken over by car facilities such as parking lot and gas station. This breaks up other transportation network such as existing bike lanes.

Analysis

TREE CANOPY

There is also noticeably lack of trees along Edgars Road shopping cener. This caused heat stress to the area in addition to increased greenhouse emissions through car use and the use of asphalt road and concrete pavement that absorbs heat. There is a possibility that compacted soil on median strips and sidewalks affect tree root system, which also decrease the chances of trees to grow and provide enough canopy cover on median strips. This analysis will be infer to in design strategies of adding greenway.

BIKE AND CAR ACCESS

Lack of formal cycling path on either sides of Edgars Road. Ineffective existing bike lane due to disconnection, makes the path unrecognizable from satellite. This finding will be infered in design strategies of shared path.
