M

His father Johann Ambrosius Bach played the trumpet and the clavichord. His father was his first teacher.

When he was 14 years old, he got a choral scholarship to study at St. Michael’s school in Lßneburg. At that school, he studied voice, organ, harpsichord, French, Italian, theology, Latin, history, geography and physics.

His parents both died when Bach was 9 years old.

I

The Duke Johann Ernest III brought him to his court in Weimar. Bach was not happy because his work did not involve music. He had to do domestic work even though he could play the organ.

He spent a few months studying the organ with the great organist Dietrich Buxtehude.

UE ST

At the age of 18, he went to Arnstadt to work as an organ repairman.

RA

JohAnn SeBASTiAn BACh

He went to the city of M端hlhausen to work as an organist and there he got married to his cousin Maria Barbara Bach and they had 7 children.

M

Bach composed religious music and always worked as an organist and choir director in a church.

13

He returned to Weimar where he continued working as an organist and writing religious music.

He wrote the Well-Tempered Clavier H t standardize the tuning to of o the instruments.

I

Would you like to know what Bach did in my court?

RA

JohAnn SeBASTiAn BACh

While he was working for me, he wrote a letter to the margrave of Brandenburg asking to work as his court musician. He wrote the famous Brandenburg Concertos for the Margrave! What nerve he had!

14

UE ST

He was hired to work at the court of Prince Leopold of Kรถthen where he wrote music for parties at the palace.

M

His wife Maria Barbara died and Bach got remarried to the singer Anna Magdalena and together they had 13 children.

Anna Magdalena helped Bach a lot and wrote a book about their life together.

He lived in the city of Leipzig for the last 27 years of his life. He worked as the Cantor and Director of Music at St. Thomas Church.

He was completely blind when he died on the 27th of July in 1750. Some of his children were also great musicians.
