Connect Magazine | The Beginning and The End - Issue 1, 2024
Under the rule of our sovereign God, Carinya acknowledges the Gamilaroi people as the traditional custodians of the land on which the School is built.
As we engage as a community to discover a world made through Jesus for His glory, we recognise the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to this land.
We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of Reconciliation as we enjoy God’s grace to us through Jesus.

REVELATION 22:13
Carinya celebrates its 40th year of CHRISTIAN EDUCATION in 2024.
Commencing in 1984 with 6 students, Carinya Tamworth has grown to around 850 students from Prep to Year 12. It has been exciting to watch and be part of the growth and change of Carinya over the years. In this 40th year, we have been challenged more than ever to consider the foundational principles of the school.
Our logo, the Alpha and Omega, represents the rst and last letters of the Greek alphabet. It comes from the passage quoted above and re ects the complete sovereignty of Jesus over everything. is shapes how we approach education at Carinya in the following ways:
•Anything we teach only has true meaning and context in relation to Jesus
•We view children as made in God’s image. All their gi s and abilities come from Him
•Everything we learn is under the authority of Jesus; in Him, we live and move and have our being
• We intrinsically motivate children to nd the reward in the task, knowing that all our gi s come from Christ and for His glory
While the role of the school is to teach the best we can, our purpose is to glorify Jesus. He is the foundation on whom we build our teaching, learning and relationships.
Much has happened over 40 years. Recent events such as the pandemic remind us of how fragile we are. Our hope is that Jesus will stay central to all we do at Carinya for another 40 years. We believe by doing this, we will continue to enjoy a school that:
•Brings glory to Jesus by helping children to read, write and count the best they can
•Is safe for kids - because relationships matter
•Helps children honour their parents and supports what they are taught at home
•Teaches children amazing things about God’s world, re ecting His character as our creator
•Shapes children to become faithful learners who seek to serve the community in which they live
Whatever the future holds for Carinya, we know that this is God’s school. He is our foundation for all we do, and we hope you will join us in praising Him for 40 years of Christian education.

Pastoral Care Teachers meet with students each morning and are available to provide additional support to students. Notes regarding absences or uniform can be made directly to the relevant Pastoral Care Teachers, or to the front o ce via TASS Parent Lounge, Parent App, email or written note.
ere are many excursions that occur throughout Term 1, providing valuable learning opportunities as well as time for students and sta to get to know each other better. If the excursion is overnight or involves travelling a distance from Tamworth, then information is emailed home and added to the Parent Lounge for parents to acknowledge their child’s attendance. For excursions that occur during the school day (Year 7-12 only), a text message is sent home at least 24 hours prior to the excursion.
It is essential that your child’s details in TASS Parent Lounge are correct and kept up to date if anything changes, as excursion coordinators use this information for rst aid and organising any relevant risk management, such as allergies and medications. Excursions are a compulsory part of our school curriculum and students are required to attend.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER
Mr Grant S rbor
gh
Where did you grow up? I grew up in St Marys, Western Sydney.
What is your job and how long have you been doing it for? I work as e Human Resources and Compliance Manager and started in November 2023.
What is the best thing about working in a Christian school? Everyone is working towards the same goal, for Christ.
What part of your own schooling do you think had the most signi cant impact on your life? e educators who were passionate about what they did and about my classmates and our learning.
Name one other job you have done in your life and what did you enjoy, or not enjoy, about it? Zookeeper. Animals intrigue me, and I enjoy observing and learning about and from them. ere is so much variety in God’s creation, and I was privileged enough to do this with one of the best views in Sydney. Some of the clean-up jobs were pretty excessive, and Elephant duty was a challenge.
What do you like to do in your spare time? Spending time with my family. I love my family, and I love doing things together. Church, sport, camping in the bush. Gardening. I enjoy the serenity of time in the garden.
If you could instantly learn a new skill, what would it be? Speak in Mandarin.
Name one book (other than the Bible) you would recommend everyone to read? e Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Whose journey is this?
If you had to live in another country for 12 months, where would you choose and why? I would choose Taiwan. It’s a pretty special place for myself and my family.
If you had 1 million dollars to spend in 24 hours, how would you spend it? Nelson Mandela said that the true re ection of a society’s soul is the way in which it treats its children. I would nd organisations that help support children and families in need and give them the money so that they can continue this important work.
Name one practical way Jesus has made a di erence in your life. Peace. I look back on my life, points of decision, times of challenge. I can see that Jesus has given me peace, sometimes a response to prayer, a word of direction or encouragement. Knowing he is there when I have struggled, been sick or in pain.

The Sport Run Down
In 2023, another great year unfolded in the sporting world for Carinya. Over 300 students participated in extracurricular activities, and we traversed the state, competing against schools of all sizes. Many di erent sta members accompanied students, nurturing and forging relationships.
One factor contributing to Carinya’s extensive sporting program is the dedicated coaches for whom we are grateful to have. Most of these coaches are volunteers, generously sacri cing their time to mentor our students, helping them not only become better athletes but also better members of society.
Among the highlights of 2023 for me was witnessing the growth of basketball, especially in the junior age groups. It was truly fantastic to observe many students engaging in weekly sports and forming new relationships and connections.
Another highlight was when we elded our largest team at the Secondary Zone Athletics Carnival, where every member contributed, supporting and cheering each other on, creating a shared experience that none of them will soon forget.
Our netballers had a terri c year, clad in their new uniforms, training diligently every Monday and competing ercely each Saturday as well as some ursday nights. ey participated at Zone and State levels, notably in the nal 8 at the NSW Schools Cup, in a positive and supportive way, leaving nothing behind on the court.
As we look forward to 2024, I anticipate the creation of more lasting memories.

Building Firm Foundations
When looking to buy a new house one of the rst things you do is get a building inspection. You want to make sure that the house has a rm foundation. Getting the foundation right is critical. Imagine riding the li to the top of Sydney Tower. You’re up there enjoying the view and hear an employee whisper that they have just found a crack in the foundation of the building. You are going to get out of there as quick as you can! Foundations are of crucial importance.
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the oods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock”
Matthew 7:24-25
It is no wonder that the Bible talks about the importance of building a rm foundation. As parents we are told:
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6
At Carinya we want to excel in teaching kids to read, write, count, think and create. In doing this, the foundations that are built upon are fundamental. at foundation is based upon the truth of who God is and how He would have us live. More than that, we could say he wants us to live our best life.

“ e thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fu .”
John 10:10
In all of what is taught at school, we seek to point children to Jesus so that they might have life and have it to the fullest.
As we start a new school year, you can rest assured that as a school, we are supporting the Christ-centred foundation you are seeking to build in your children. From Prep through to Year 12, they are being taught to discover a world made through Jesus for His glory. Children are being anchored in their creator so that as the winds of life blow, they will not fall, as their foundation is secure; rather, our prayer is that they live life to the fullest.
Term 4 in K-4
Kindergarten
In Term 4, our Kindergarten students embarked on a local exploration, discovering the purpose of familiar places in our community. Led by the Vicar, they sang songs and learned about St John’s Church, captivated by its stained glass windows. Over morning tea at Oxley Lookout, they spotted landmarks like the town centre, hospital, and McDonald’s. e day concluded with joyous train rides at e Tamworth Miniature Railway, creating lasting memories of hands-on learning in our community.
Year 1
In Term 4 Year 1 enjoyed a ction book titled ' e Circus Ship' by Chris Van Dusen. is was a story about a greedy circus owner and local townsfolk who came up with a plan to help look a er the circus animals. It was an amazing storybook about friendship and community. In Drama, Year 1 took on the role of acting as circus performers. As a culminating activity for the unit, 1 White students rehearsed and performed the play ' e Calala Circus Carnival'. Students participated in di erent acts such as scarf and bean bag jugglers, ribbon twirlers and more. e children thoroughly enjoyed performing their play to an engaged audience.
Year 2
How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all. the earth is full of your creatures. - Psalm 104:24
Year 3
Students delve into pet responsibility, meeting a dog and learning care essentials, from feeding to grooming. is hands-on lesson emphasises the responsibility of caring for a pet, fostering a connection with their new canine companion.
Extraordinarily E cient Energy - is unit provides students with the opportunity to explore forces and motion. rough hands-on activities, students identify forces that act at a distance and those that act in direct contact, and investigate how di erent-sized forces a ect the movement of objects.
Year 4
e radial symmetry artwork, created with careful folds like the Hat Fold, Kite Fold, and Samurai Fold, beautifully combines art and mathematics. Each fold adds to a symmetrical pattern from the center, forming intricate shapes reminiscent of a kaleidoscope. is piece invites viewers to appreciate the delicate balance between beauty and mathematical order. It celebrates the connection between art and math, where creativity and structure come together, much like the beauty we see in nature—a re ection of God’s creative and structured design.

New Beginnings
As we return from resting and celebrating the birth of Jesus over Christmas, the promise of new beginnings is rich. A new school year brings many opportunities for both students and sta . Students have the opportunity to re ect on the way they learn and the things they would like to achieve during the year. Goal setting can help students to contemplate the direction they want to take, both in their learning and at home. Do they want to learn a new skill? Or give a new sport a try or get a part-time job? It would be good to encourage your child to write a list or write one together.
Here at Carinya, we are also a orded the privilege of a fresh start. Sta have had the opportunity to re ect on their practice, think about their teaching and set goals for professional learning for the year.
e new year reminds me of the fresh start that anyone who is a follower of Jesus has as a result of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. God’s great plan for his people is that our failures and sin no longer de ne us in the eyes of God. e truths in the Bible de ne us as a school. In Middle School, we always seek to treat your child as an individual, created in the image of a perfect God. at is not to say they are perfect and neither are their teachers. Rather, this truth dictates the way we treat each other-with dignity, kindness and respect, as image bearers and with a true appreciation of our hopelessness without Jesus.
ere will be four areas of priority for Middle School this year: resilience; using data to drive our teaching; outdoor education; and relationship building, including con ict resolution. We will be addressing these priorities in Pastoral Care, assemblies, on camps, and in the classroom.
Can I encourage you to be purposeful about how you approach this new beginning, a orded to us at this time every year, where we can re ect and plan and be strategic about how to approach study and relationships in ways which bring God glory rather than spending our time pleasing ourselves. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the 38 students new to Middle School in 2024 and wish you and your families all the very best for the start of a new school year.

CARINYA CONNECT
Getting to know our Student Leaders
Je ie Fotheringham
Leadership is a big deal. Many people get it wrong.
At Carinya, the leadership of Year 12 students is a little di erent from other schools. Who are these ‘big kids’ with ‘shiny badges,’ and why are there so many of them?
Instead of electing a limited number of speci c leaders or captains based on an individual’s popularity, academics, or personality, Carinya gives all Year 12 students the choice to be leaders, to allow each of us to use our di erent, God-given talents and abilities to serve those around us.
is example of leadership comes from the Bible and the life of Jesus. roughout the Gospels, we see Jesus, who, despite being the Son of God, led a life of service and sel essness, healing the sick, feeding the poor, and, most importantly, winning salvation and a personal relationship with God for His people. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
is is the most unexpected and astonishing element of the Kingdom of God and Jesus: that greatness in the Kingdom of God is not by being served but by serving others. e student leadership program aims to give all Year 12 students an opportunity to follow this example; “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be rst must be a slave of all.” Mark 10:44
is service may be seen formally in various ways according to our unique and God-given gi s and abilities, such as leading at assemblies, representing the school at public events, tutoring younger students, coaching sports teams, or organizing events and fundraisers. It may be seen informally as well, in how we wear our uniform, work faithfully in class, or help younger students in the playground.
is year, we have many plans as we step up into our role as student leaders, including lunchtime sports competitions, creating a community garden, student tutoring, and community service. While we are unsure of what the year will look like and what the speci cs of our service may be, we can trust that God is in control and that we will continue to serve the school community in whatever ways we can.

Carinya c ates
Carinya Christian School recently brought back its much-loved event, ‘Carinya Creates,’ a er a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. e night, held on Tuesday November 21st 2023, was a wonderful celebration of creativity.
e event featured stunning displays of art by Middle School students, innovative projects from Textiles and Design classes, and captivating musical performances by the School Orchestra, Secondary Choir, and Year 10 and 12 Music Students. e Drama classes of Year 9 and 10 added a theatrical touch with engaging plays.
Attendees had a pleasant time at ‘Carinya Creates,’ surrounded by art, music, and theatrical performances. e event showcased students’ talents and reminded us of the joy of coming together as a community to appreciate the blessings we have. Please enjoy some of the event’s memories that were captured.
Engaging as a community to discover a world made through Jesus for His Glory.
Duke of Edinburgh Excursion
Two days, ten students and countless waratahs. e Duke of Edinburgh hike through part of Gibraltar Range National Park was beautiful from start to nish. e views over the ranges were spectacular, and the brilliant red waratah owers amazed the students. Well, more Miss Jones and Miss Porter than the students. While everyone remembered their tents this time, the boys were le swapping juice poppas for cooking stove fuel due to unfortunate miscommunication.
Highlights of the trip de nitely came from the a ernoon and evening activities. e students enjoyed rock-hopping and swimming in the cool river near the campsite. A lot of fun was also had by taking turns jumping o a small rock ledge and plunging into the pool below.
A er the sun had set and the dinners were all cooked and eaten, the students could listen to a bible study and then play night games while the wildlife snuck in and started eating their le overs!
e students did a great job, and seeing their improvement from previous hikes was encouraging. It was lovely spending time with this group, exploring God’s beautiful world.
