Naz plays defence on tax tardiness accusation

IT WASN’T ME!

OPPOSITION Senator and former Finance Minister Nazim Burke has spent the week defending his tax record; publicly disputing the figures of his former charges at the finance department and threatening to sue anyone who suggests he is a dodger. To prove he meant business, he announced that he had received judgment – since last month against radio talkshow host Ian Edwards for erroneously claiming he had five houses. The judgment against Edwards was “in default”, as lawyers for the talkshow host reportedly did not file his defense in time. A damning commercial in the run-up to the 2013 elections, had claimed Burke had built a

second home at a time of deep recession and real estate losses, suggesting political insensitivity on his part. Burke has never legally challenged the widely played commercial. His latest threat to sue this newspaper on its December expose under the headline ‘Burke’s tax burden’, has been met by its Florida-based publishers, with a declarative retort: “Since truth needs no legal advice, we eagerly wait to see Mr Burke in court.” But for now, Burke’s biggest headache appears to be more political than legal, prompting an emergency meeting Wednesday night of key party activists in St Andrew’s to, in the words of the secret invitation, “bring clarity to the is-

sue.” Burke told a talkshow hosted by one of his party’s political activist, that the latest accusations against him was an attempt to damage him politically; though his critics say the debate started when the former Finance Minister suggested that the department he once led might have been acting out of spite by not paying him his gratuity. Our subsequent investigation revealed that the Ministry of Finance was contending that Burke had a higher tax liability than the money he was owed, and that they have been seeking a settlement.
