History made as Memorandum of Understanding signed

BY JOHN MATHER “I have the pleasure of welcoming you to a major historic event.”

With that, Radomir Bilash began the ceremony on Sept. 7 twinning Lamont County with the Village of Nebyliv, in the Perehinske Community Village in Ukraine.

Bilash is a noted Ukrainian historian and acted as the MC for the ceremony, speaking in both English and Ukrainian during the celebration which was live-streamed back to the Ukraine village.

“An acknowledgment of a bond that has existed for 130 years, a bond between the Village of Nebyliv and Lamont County, in particular the area around Star.

“We are doing this in the true sense of bonding, using technology and sharing it with the people of Nebyliv… where it all started.”

After blessings from His Grace, Bishop David Motiuk from the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton; and the Very Reverend Archpriest, Cornell Zubritsky of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church; Motiuk gave a brief overview on the importance of the event.

“As we mark the 130 anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, I bring greetings from the Edmonton Eparchy,” he said.

“Lamont County is the Cradle of Ukrainian Settlement in Canada and it was from the Village of Nebyliv that Wasyl Eleniak and Ivan Pylypow set out and became the first government documented Ukrainian settlers in Canada.

“Little did these first immigrants know that by the 20th Century thousands would follow them, so much so that by 1914 when World War One cut off immigration, some 170,000 Ukrainians had emigrated to Canada.”

Most, he added, settled in Western Canada in the Beaver Lake, Star, Lamont and Mundare areas.

“Their sacrifices and hard work in the new country brought about a better future for Canada,” Motiuk added, “and all its people. Rewards which we continue to reap today. We must applaud their efforts.”

Consul General of the Ukraine in Edmonton Danyleiko Oleksandr worked on making the twinning happen for the past year.

“I’m really proud to be the Consul General here and represent our country in this process,” he said.

“We have a very important and symbolic day. One hundred and thirty years ago today, Wasyl Eleniak and Ivan Pylypow embarked on a very historic journey.

“They found their new home here in Alberta. They helped other Ukrainians who came later, begin their lives in a very difficult environment.

“Despite their difficulties, they started to establish a Ukrainian community here in Canada, building churches and bringing the Ukraine culture and traditions here.”

For more than a century Ukrainians have assisted the development of this country and their achievements are widely recognized, he added.

“This memorandum recognizes the important role that they played. This will re-establish all the old ties between our countries and our peoples.”

Lamont County Reeve David Diduck then spoke on the importance of the twinning event.

“Lamont County and its residents will forever be grateful to Wasyl Eleniak and Ivan Pylypow for the voyage they made to the Dominion of Canada. They embarked on this voyage in search of a better life for the families, neighbours, friends and future

generations based on a promise of free land as advertised by the Dominion of Canada.

“Each and every one of us of Ukrainian heritage owe these two men a great debt of gratitude for the life and opportunity we enjoy today.”

Pylypow returned to Ukraine after he had first arrived in Canada, and began to spread the word about the opportunities that existed in the west, Lamont County Reeve David Diduck signs a Diduck added. High school athletics restart in Lamont

BY JOHN MATHER For the first time since the pandemic closed schools down more than a year ago, athletics is taking place again at Lamont High School.

“We will be going to other schools,” said Lamont High athletic director Cory Kokotailo.

“There’s no restrictions yet but things can change quickly right now.”

He said no spectators will be allowed during games or tournaments, which is particularly hard for the school.

“We have our boys volleyball tournament next weekend (Sept. 10 & 11), and our girls volleyball tournament at the end of the month.”

He said both tournaments will be live streamed on the school’s Youtube channel.

“Some of our kids haven’t played volleyball in almost two years so they are very excited about being back,” he said, adding there were about 20 girls and 20 boys trying out for the high school volleyball teams.

“That’s too many for us so that’s great,” he said. “Normally we only get about eight or 10 players trying to make

the team. But there’s been nobody playing anywhere for a long time. We’ve had several new players trying out and some players who had taken a little time off and now feel it's a good time to come back. There

are also some players who have decided to retire.”

The girls volleyball team will play in its first tournament on the Sept.

10 and 11 weekend in Fort Saskatchewan, while the boys host their

tournament the same weekend.

The volleyball season lasts until the third week of November when zones begin and then the school’s basketball season starts up two weeks later.

Opinion So say hello to my little friend Covid, again

BY JOHN MATHER Well, well well…..

Suddenly Alberta’s best summer ever, opened for business philosophy isn’t as rosy as it was when the Calgary Stampede was on.

Delta variants of the Covid 19 disease are on the rise and more people are being admitted to hospital again.

That forced Alberta Premier Jason Kenney to rule masks must be worn in public buildings, liquor sales must be halted at 10 p.m., and he’ll give $100 to anyone who gets their first or second vaccine between Sept. 4 and October 14.

That’s a total insult to those in the population who did get vaccinated, but it doesn’t seem to faze the Premier.

And there’s no guarantee that, that will be the end of it.

Covid cases primarily of the Delta variant have been steadily rising in the Excited States, and we have seen case numbers skyrocketing in Canada.

After all, Trudeau and his Liberal government have decided to allow Americans to cross our border into our popular tourism destinations such as Niagara Falls, lower mainland B.C. and Milk River, Alta., while not allowing Canadians to reciprocate and cross the land border in the U.S. Now in the U.S. if you pay any attention to CNN, the pandemic is not so much a medical issue as much as it’s a political issue; with the right to choose, being fought against the need to vaccinate.

States like Florida and Texas refuse to enforce mask wearing in schools or force the population to get vaccinated. But looking at a map most of the continental U.S. is seeing steady increases in cases.

It is worrisome. And it is here in Canada as well. Fasten your seatbelts folks!

Unfortunately we’re into the mixed messaging we saw throughout the pandemic, where politicians offer their advice based on virtually no scientific knowledge, and medical professionals offer mixed messaging to the public based on their alternative agendas.

I sat on the sidelines for a long time prior to getting vaccinated. When I opted for the vaccine it was on the advice of my personal family doctor.

He, and he alone, knows my medical history and what would be the best for me. And even then he admitted the final decision was mine.

But now, our esteemed political leaders have a new Covid football to throw around: vaccine passports or cards.

CONTINUED While Kenney states the UCP won’t impose vaccine passports, don’t believe that for a second.

We’ll see what his position is after the Federal election is over.

Yes sir, you soon might not be allowed into businesses, government offices, on planes, trains or public automobiles unless you have proof of getting a vaccine.

Personally I have no real problem with this.

Since I was 16 I have had to carry around identification in the form of Social Insurance Number, Drivers’ Licence, Health card, credit cards and even all those silly loyalty cards you get now such as air miles or points cards from grocery stores.

So really what’s one more.

In fact, I already have a

card stating I get an annual flu shot. It’s no big deal except that it adds to an already overstuffed wallet.

But the vaccine card can be an app, which will be on your smart phone or pad.

I know this because I have one. Put my finger on the app to open it, select medical records and there is proof of two Covid vaccines.

And those already have GPS tracking apps built in so you can find the device if it gets lost. Or so the government can find you if you get lost.

A vaccine card is no big deal.

What is a bigger deal is how society deals with those who are vaccinated opposed to those who aren’t.

If the woke culture is screaming racism at every

little thing right now, what are they going to do when they can’t get into a movie theatre or sporting event because they haven’t been vaccinated?

Even more troubling is when the unvaccinated blockade an event, or as we’re seeing hospitals, because they feel getting vaccinated is too much big brother telling them what to do. And a fight breaks out between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated.

Suddenly that’s a super spreader event.

And then what will our politicians do when our vaccinated, underfunded police refuse to wade in and break it up.

It seems to me doing the right thing has never been so wrong.

But politicians and social media influencers are well known for getting it wrong.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Something To Think About

BY HAZEL ANAKA In July a Queen’s University study reported that the average person has about 6200 thoughts per day. When you think about it (get it?) that’s quite amazing.

Researchers avoided the unsuccessful method of trying to track the type of thoughts and instead focused on when one thought ends and another begins. Scientists are excited about where this research will take them in the future.

I’m excited because it helps justify the skipping from here to there nature of this column and where my mind has been lately. It won’t be close to 6000 thoughts but you may want to buckle up anyway.

1. Farmers who’ve begun combining are either pleasantly surprised or bitterly disappointed by their crops.

The prolonged heat and patchy rain affected areas and soil types differently. This year is another roll of the dice for farmers.

2. Voter Information Cards (VICs) are starting to appear in mail boxes so please take time to vote in the Federal Election on September 20th. Another option is voting in one of the advance polls happening September 10-13th. If there’s an error on your VIC you can and probably should deal with it before the 20th. The Lakeland Election Office is in the old Maddigan car dealership building and is open 7 days/week and for up to 12 hours/day.

3. Lately, when I’ve needed to zone out after a hard day, I look at pictures in some of my books because reading requires more concentration than I have right now. Whether they are books about birds or flowers or art, I soak it up and relax. A lot of the art books cover the work of the great masters from hundreds of years ago.

The other day it hit me that a lot of well-known works feature a man sprawled under a tree or in a meadow with his head in a female’s lap.

How cushy. Depending on the era, she’s trussed up in flowing skirts; high collared, long-sleeved tops; an apron; probably a hat, and heaven only knows what kind of undergarments. Hardly seems fair when the nurturing only goes one way.

4. When you get a chance to have a meaningful conversation with someone new, grab it.

While helping at my aunt’s recent garage sale, there was time between customers for such talk.

Not only will you learn something, you may also teach something. If you’re lucky, you’ll laugh. If it gets deep enough, you may tear up. I think we’re always subconsciously comparing: Am I better or worse off than her in relationships, health, richness of life experience, sorrow and grief? How does my perspective on life, men, politics, the handicapped compare to hers?

5. It seems that many of us are having to confront our stuff. We’re either at the age where we or our parents are downsizing to smaller and/or senior’s housing.

Increasingly, we’re dealing with estates and disposal of a lifetime of stuff. If we’re really proactive, we may be purging so our own kids don’t have to do it after

we’re gone. Whatever the reason, there is stuff galore to contend with.

Some people choose to gift things outright to family, friends, charities.

Others want to wring every nickel out of their stuff through garage sales or online marketplaces. Others are in denial and are happy knowing it’s someone else’s problem when they’re gone.

Today there are so many more options for disposing of tangibles.

There are actually ‘pickers’ who, for a commission will go through your stuff and dispose of it for you. There are TV shows and YouTube channels devoted to telling those stories.

While it may take considerably longer doing it that way, you have more say in the price. Back in the day, people disposed of entire households and farming operations through unreserved auction sales. It’s over in a day, but you get what someone was willing to pay that day for that thing.

And what about those heirlooms and handcrafted, sentimental items? The doilies and petit point pictures are out of vogue right now.

A framed picture that took hundreds of hours to make sells for less than the price of the kit, never mind the professional framing. Does anyone care? Ultimately, does it matter to the buyer or seller? If it was used and enjoyed for

decades, it served its purpose. If it was hoarded as far too precious to use and enjoy, that’s a different story. None of us are taking any of this stuff with us, so we need to figure this out. If we are gifted an heirloom, a legacy piece of something, do we appreciate receiving it or will it find its way into our next sale? Like most things, we all need to decide for ourselves and take whatever action is required.

There is no one right answer.

6. I had a chance to tour a senior’s lodge the other day and was pleas-

antly surprised.

It seemed bright, wellequipped, and as homey as these places can be.

And bonus, it didn’t have that bad smell often associated with group housing.

7. Regardless of where you stand or what you think, Covid-19 and its variants are still a threat.

All of us have some combination of opinion, theory, fear, denial, wisdom, or ignorance. How are we going to get through this if we can’t agree with or at least comply with the recommended path out?

there who still doesn’t acknowledge that the climate has changed for the worse? If the frequency, severity, and devastation of recent weather events hasn’t gotten everyone examining their beliefs, I don’t know what it will take to get our collective attention.

Fire, famine, flooding…the trifecta of death for too many.

Former principal excited to return to Bruderheim School

BY JANA SEMENIUK Former principal of Bruderheim School, Paul McKay, has returned to assume the role as princi-

pal once again after Mrs. Semeniuk, principal for the past two years, accepted another position with Next Step

McKay was principal in Bruderheim before accepting another position with Alberta Education in 2017 and then with a school in Sherwood Park before coming back to Bruderheim for the 21/22 school year.

“When the opportunity presented itself to come back to Bruderheim School, I jumped at the chance. It was such a lovely experience the first time around,” he said.

McKay said he was anticipating some lower numbers for enrollments this year and was pleasantly surprised.

“119 students is an increase from our fall projection. It's about on par with what it was last year. We were anticipating a few less kids so we were lucky to have a few families move into the neighborhood. I think we're right back to where

we were at last year,” he said.

In terms of the mandatory masking rules, McKay said he hasn’t heard any complaints.

“I have not formally heard any complaints at all,” he said.

While McKay wants an eventual return to normal from COVID

restrictions, he understands it might take a bit longer than he would like.

“I think along with every parent and every child out there, the hope is no interruptions this year, and that we get to get on with the business of learning,” he said.

“It's my goal that we

keep our kids in full time and that it kind of returns back to business as usual, where learning is at the forefront. My goal is to try to get back to as close to normal in the learning area as possible, understanding that it looks like it's going to take a little bit more time to get back to normal.”

The meeting will take place at St. Michael Rec. Centre on Sept. 15 beginning at 6 p.m. and running until 8:30 p.m.

“This allows the public the opportunity to come and meet the candidates and then stay and discuss your priorities one on one ,” said Chamber executive director Tamara Dabels.

Former pharmacist takes on Stubbs for People’s Party of Canada

BY JOHN MATHER Ann McCormack will be the flag bearer for the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) in the Lakeland riding, it was announced last week.

The former pharmacist from Clandonald, laughs as she admits she didn’t know what she was getting herself in for when she agreed to be the People’s Party of Canada candidate in the Lakeland Riding running up against Conservative incumbent Shannon Stubbs.

“I sometimes think I’ve taken leave of my senses getting into all this Federal stuff,” she laughs. “We have a small farm in Clandonald and my husband runs a construction company. My parents were always involved in Conservative politics which I think has motivated me.”

She admits she came into the election in a roundabout way. She had wondered what the party was all about, but she noticed there was no candidate vacancy listed on the party’s website.

“For whatever reason that person decided not to run and I really like some of the policies that they had listed,” McCormack adds. “I was asked if I’d put my name forward to represent those values and after some deliberation with my family, said yes.”

“I am committing myself to the protection of the freedom and rights of the people in the

Lakeland Riding,” she stated in a press release announcing her candidacy. “As a wife, mother and retired pharmacist I am alarmed and very concerned about what has happened over the past 19 months.

“It’s time for a change in politics because today the political agenda seems to run on fear, fear and more fear. Parties try to scare electors into voting for them. This is not a positive way to strengthen our country.”

McCormack said the People’s Party of Canada has the small “c” conservative views that she feels the Federal Conservative Party of Canada is moving away from.

“I’ve always believed in smaller government and lower taxes, and a prosperous society is a cleaner, more generous society.

“I like the PPC Covid policy and a lot of their philosophies are get out of the way and let people live their lives. I think that’s a pretty positive position right now.”

McCormack knows she is going up against a very strong candidate in Shannon Stubbs.

“Oh yes, she’s a strong candidate,” states McCormack. “The only thing I have against Shannon Stubbs is her boss right now. Erin O’Toole seems to be moving towards a lot of Trudeau’s views and I’d find those values pretty tough to defend.”

She's excited that next Sunday, (Sept. 12) PPC leader Maxime Bernier will be making a quick tour of the riding with stops in Mundare, Vegreville, Vermillion and a final stop with a large rally at the Vic Juba Theatre in Lloydminster.

“There are a large list of concerns for Western Canada, and Alberta, that politicians seem to ignore,” adds McCormack. “Nobody is prepared to discuss or address these issues other than the PPC. “Local candidates of the mainstream parties are forced to be quiet and follow the directives of their parties which are controlled by elites in a far off part of the country.

“Albertans have lost faith in the political system and feel that politicians are no longer working for the people but working for themselves,” she further adds.

“There is no more certain proof of that for Albertans than Erin O'Toole promising his own Conservative carbon tax which would continue to destroy jobs and livelihoods in Alberta just to get votes in the rest of Canada.

“A job for him and his CPC candidates but not for Albertans.

“Many Canadians no longer even show up to vote, feeling that their vote does not matter. But it does matter,” she claims.

Bruderheim Council gets CN to lower price, sign deal

BY JANA SEMENIUK CN Rail and the Town of Bruderheim have come to an agreement in the case of rising lease rates on Queen’s Park.

The picturesque little patch of land, named for the Queen’s visit in 1978, sits beside a railway at the South end of town on land owned by CN Rail.

For over 40 years, Bruderheim has paid a modest annual lease rate of $750 to CN for use of the land and CN has paid the town $500 annually in property taxes. Recently, CN Rail adjusted the lease rate to $2,500 per year which upset town council during the Aug. 18 council meeting.

“I think we have to do

everything in our power to avoid paying $2,500 a year for property that we maintain for them,” said Councillor Len Falardeau.

Bruderheim Chief Administrative Officer Patty Podoborozny said CN explained why they raised the rate.

“In discussions with Calvin Leung, CN Asset Manager, he said the new rate of $2,500 is below their annual lease rates typically for CN property leases,” she said. “There's no option to lease to own, or to purchase the property at this time.”

Mayor Karl Hauch and Councillor George Campbell met with Calvin Leung, CN Asset

Manager, to negotiate the lease rate and came to an agreement of $1,000 plus GST per year.

Campbell said Leung was more than accommodating to the town.

“I would like to mention the fact that when we first negotiated this lease it was for $1,000 for five years,” he said. “Mr. Calvin Leung, after consideration, came back and gave us a lease of $1,000 a year for 10 years.

It shows that the CN company is willing to work with our community to enhance it and be a better supporter.”

The new lease agreement with CN is effective from Oct. 1, 2021 to Sept.

30, 2031.

“This is a huge riding,” McCormack admits. “I’ve been up to Andrew. I’ve been making a few stops all the way along. For someone who doesn’t have a staff and is operating on a shoestring budget it’s a big undertaking.”

She has also campaigned in Lamont but still has to visit Chipman and the Bruderheim area.

“Bernier preaches radical decentralization of government and that is a strong attraction,” she said. “The party does have conservative values.”

“It’s been a really welcoming experience as I door knock,” McCormack adds.

“People are saying they are conservative but they can’t vote for the

Conservative Party as it exists today. My parents voted for the Conservative Party for years but it would be hard to do now. I think you’re going to see a real purple wave.”

Maverick faces daunting task taking on Stubbs

BY JOHN MATHER Lakeland Maverick Party candidate Fred Sirett hasn’t run for political office before, but he’s fully committed to the Maverick Party’s Western Canada first mandate, as he seeks to topple popular Conservative MP Shannon Stubbs in the Sept. 20 federal election.

When asked why the Maverick Party, he explains, “I found it (the party) about three months ago.”

“Before that I was really struggling with who to vote for in this riding in the election. I didn’t think anybody was really representing our interest in the west.

“I looked up the Maverick Party and went to a town hall they held and the fact that the Maverick Party is a Western Canada regional party is what attracted me to them.”

The Party, he added, isn’t running any candidates east of Manitoba in this election.

“It’s running along the same structure as the Bloc Quebecois party and I feel it’s the best way to get fairer representation for us in the west.”

Sirett said he’s been a farmer most of his life in Paradise Valley. While he’s been involved with others in municipal poli-

tics and did some “door knocking with Preston Manning” he says he hasn’t got a strong political resume.

Sirett was also a pastor for 35 years and also helps out his sons run their businesses.

Running against Shannon Stubbs is a daunting task, he admits, “But I have absolutely nothing bad to say against Shannon.

“To me it’s more about ideology,” he adds.

“Being a Western Canada party only means we aren’t compromised by agendas from Central Canada.”

Mr. O’Toole said he would scrap the carbon tax, but now he’s waffled on that. I know the western MPs aren’t in agreement on that. Shannon is one of the strongest MPs in the West but her hands are tied.”

“All she can talk about is what is in their policy book and we Mavericks aren’t worried about that.

“If something isn’t good for the west then we won’t support it as Mavericks,” he explained. “If it is good for the west then we’ll support it.”

“I don’t think Shannon can say the same thing,” he said. “The voters are going to have to make a decision on that and I’m not belittling the size of

that decision.”

Sirett feels he has some good exposure on the east side of the riding and has been campaigning in the Mundare area but still wants to do more in the northern part of the riding.

There’s a lot of work for us to do, there's no question,” he said. “But I must say when we meet people at the door or different events and explain what we are and how we’re structured the reception is very good.

“I think people are a little hesitant because of vote splitting, but this is such a strong conservative riding I don’t think there’s much danger of this.

“People,” he adds, “are very concerned about the mistreatment of the West.”

Sirett said he’s getting good feelings from farmers and oilfield workers in the riding when he explains what the Maverick Party is about.

“It’s been an overwhelming process,” he said. “I never knew there was so much paperwork involved in running for an election. But it’s tough to get a read on where we’re at.”

“We’ll work hard until the last day and let the voters make their decision on the type of government they want.”

New election officers appointed in Lamont County

BY JOHN MATHER With the recent resignation of both of Lamont County’s municipal election Returning Officer and Deputy Returning Officer, the County Council held a special meeting Sept. 2 to appoint new officers.

Council appointed Debbi McCann as the new Returning Officer.

She replaces Executive Assistant, Aileen Burke who had been appointed on June 8, but resigned from the County recently. Jessica Post was appointed as the new Deputy Returning Officer, replacing former Legislative Services Officer, Johnathan

Strathdee who resigned at the end of August.

Council was told McCann had extensive election experience with more than 30 years of municipal experience.

Post will rely on help from McCann and will also take any training provided by the provincial government as soon as possible.

In addition the County decided advance polls for the municipal election will be held at the Lamont administration building Oct. 8 with a second advance poll Oct. 9 at a location yet to be named.

Tentative polling places for the Oct. 18

municipal election will be Division One: Mundare at the Rec. Centre and possibly at the Moscow Hall, but that is subject to change.

Division Two locations are Chipman and the Red Barn at Ukrainian Village. Division Three voters will mark their ballots at the Delph Hall and St. Michael Hall; while Division Four residents will vote in Andrew. In Division Five voting takes place at Bruderheim Hall, Lamont Hall and possibly at the Skaro Hall.

All locations are subject to change as the County moves closer to the actual election date.

Residents’ spirits soar because of Bird Man of Beaver Hill Lodge Bill Kimbriel has become known as the Bird Man of Beaver Hill Lodge since he relocated from Mannville and took up the habit of feeding the seagulls early mornings and evenings. As many as 30 gulls have been seen swooping in for their feeding by the Bird Man. Although crows try to get some of the food, male seagulls are normally the winners of the daily bird tussles. Mr. Kimbriel buys his own food since recently moving to be closer to relatives.

Mom’s memorial sign for son erected, defeating “angry soul” Adopting a highway allows her to pay tribute to son without neighbour continually destroying roadside crosses

BY JANA SEMENIUK A grieving Edmonton mother, whose roadside memorial for her late son was removed twice by a disgruntled neighbour, has finally claimed victory.

Marianne Armstrong’s 20-year-old son Braeden Bumphrey was killed in June 2015 when the vehicle he was driving with three of his friends went out of control near Elk Island Park and flipped into the ditch. Bumphrey was the only fatality.

A roadside memorial cross, erected by Armstrong and her family marking the spot where Bumphrey died, sat for five years.

In Sept. 2020, a nearby landowner took and disposed of the wooden cross citing annoyance at the sight of the memorial.

“I have to look at this every day when I drive to my property. A more

appropriate place would be near her home or in a cemetery,” said the landowner who claimed responsibility and asked to remain anonymous when contacted by the Lamont Leader.

After an outpouring of support from the public on social media, a second metal cross was constructed and installed in May 2021, only to be removed again three weeks later. A frustrated Armstrong then had an idea.

“I decided to participate in Alberta’s AdoptA-Highway program,” she said by messenger. “I applied and was granted the section from Highway 831 and township road 550 -552 where Braeden passed away.”

BY JOHN MATHER Lamont County Council voted-in a new Pandemic Protocol Policy at a special council meeting on Sept.

2, one day ahead of the province requiring a return to province-wide masking regulations.

“We were able to be ahead of the curve on this protocol,” said County Reeve David Diduck.

“All masking will be mandated in our buildings,” he said. “If you're working at your workstation and can maintain a six metre perimeter then you can remove the mask. If you step away from your workstation you will have to mask up.”

He added social distancing will be reimplemented at the six metre distance.

“The barriers in council chambers will remain up and the front desk barrier will remain.”

“Before the province made its announcement we were going to be

enforcing employees wear a mask entering and exiting the building,” he added.

In addition the new policy made visitation by appointment only, to have a meeting with County employees.

“The other things we added to our policy,” stated Diduck, “was we put in triggers that if 15 cases are reached in the County then our mask rules would come into effect.”

This would stop if for a minimum of 14 days there are less than 15 cases.

As of Aug. 30 there were 19 cases in the County.

But the provincial rules overruled that.

County officials riding together in a vehicle must wear masks, and masks must be worn if a two-metre distance can’t be maintained during meetings.

The County further encourages all its employees to get vaccinated.

What Armstrong chose to have on her sign, installed on Sept. 3, is ‘In Memory of Braeden Bumphrey’.

“My heart just about jumped out of my chest when I was notified that

it was put up,” said Armstrong on her social media. “I am so happy to see that it’s installed just a few feet away from where his cross was. I'm thankful that we persevered and didn't let ourselves be pushed around by an angry soul.”
