Leslie Cholowsky Editor For 50 years, farm families from northern and central Alberta communities have been recognized as recipients of the Farm Family Award, selected by Northern and Central Agricultural Service Boards. Killam’s Century 12 Farms, represented by Stan, Roger, and Derek Chevraux and their family, were the recipients of the 2020 Farm Family Award, presented Friday, Nov. 12, at FarmFair International in Edmonton. The award honours both their farming business practices and community involvement. The Chevraux family received their gate sign at the official gala. The award was presented by Arlindo Gomes, Vice President, Business Development and Venues Management, Explore Edmonton. Century 12 Farms Ltd. is owned and operated by Roger and Heather Chevraux.

They farm in partnership with Chevraux Farms Inc., owned by Roger’s parents, Stan and Sharleen Chevraux, and with their youngest son, Derek. Their 5,000-acre grain and oilseed operation, located near Killam, began as a half section in 1912 when the family moved to the area from Kansas. All family members are dedicated community volunteers with involvement in the Killam Gun Club, Iron Creek Flying Club, Killam Hospital Foundation, and the Killam Lions Club. All three of their children have been involved in many sports over the years, as both participants and coaches. Roger is on the Boards of both Alberta Canola Growers Association and the Canadian Canola Growers Association. The Chevraux Family was also recipients of the Alberta Century Farm Award in 2012.

Kurek appointed deputy shadow Rural Economic Dev. and Rural Broadband Strategy minister Damien C. Kurek, Member of Parliament for Battle River - Crowfoot, has been appointed as the Deputy Shadow Minister of Rural Economic Development and Rural Broadband Strategy in Canada’s Official Opposition. “Coming from rural Alberta, I understand first-hand the challenges that we are facing,” Kurek said in response to the appointment. “Many of them relate directly to the economy. If we invest in rural Canada, we all benefit. “Many rural communities, small businesses, organizations, and families are being held back from achieving their full potential.

“This unrealized potential includes our legacy industries, such as the resource and agricultural sectors, and the ability to see breakthrough in new and innovative sectors that will transform our nation and grow our economy. “Rural Canada can and should be part of the solution to the challenges facing our nation.” Kurek said this is a great fit as he passionately about advocating for rural concerns as he takes on this role. Additionally, he stated that he is looking forward to working with the Shadow Minister of Rural Economic Development and Rural Broadband Strategy, MP Lianne Rood.
