The Borch Brothers (L-R) Garnet (Keyboard), Marten (guitar), Rigel (fiddle), and Forest (fiddle), play their catchy East Coast music for the residents of the Father Filas Manor in an outdoor, masked up afternoon concert in Mundare on May 25.

Borch Brothers’ music brings joy to Mundare seniors BY JANA SEMENIUK Music was in the air at Father Filas Manor in Mundare on May 25. Approximately 27 seniors gathered with their masks on in front of their residence to enjoy some fiddle music performed by the Borch Brothers: Garnet, 25, on the keyboard; Marten, 26, on the guitar; plus Rigel, 17, and Forest, 28, on the fiddles. The brothers had toes tapping and hands clapping to favourites such as the Four String Polka, the Tennessee Waltz, and even rocked out with Born to Be Wild. “The harmonica was my first instrument,” laughed Marten. “But it wasn’t cool enough so I learned guitar. Now I play old country music like all the cool kids do!” The four brothers, who are actually brothers, have been playing together

since they were 2-10 years old. “Rigel, the youngest, has had a fiddle in his hands since he was 13 months old,” said Marten. When the brothers are not making beautiful music together, Garnet and Marten work together for a non profit organization that distributes food. Forest works as an engineer in Vancouver, while Rigel recently graduated high school. “Forest isn’t usually with us because he lives in Vancouver,” said Marten. “And Rigel just graduated last week from New Serepta High School.” The COVID pandemic has upended many people’s lives, including the brothers. “We were supposed to be recording a CD right now,” said Marten. “It was supposed to be a pretty big summer. We had a bunch of festivals booked

which are of course cancelled now.” The brothers performed for approximately an hour for the residents of the Father Filas facility, and earlier in the day performed for the Tofield senior’s residence. Both performances were done for free. “The two places are special to us. Our great grandfather lived here at the residence in Mundare,” said Marten, “and one of our earliest mentors lived

at the residence in Tofield. So we felt it was a way we could give back a little bit to do the performances for free.” Marten also expressed the joy the brothers feel when performing for others. “We have a posting on our facebook page, if you pay for our gas to come we will perform for free,” he said with a smile.

Residents of the Father Filas Manor in Mundare enjoyed an outdoor, socially distanced and masked up performance by the Borch Brothers family music group on May 25.
