Firefighters Firefighters respond respond to to fire fire from from high high above above at at Paterson Paterson Grain Grain elevator elevator inin Daysland Daysland Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Daysland Fire Department was called out on Friday, Dec. 17, in sub-zero -30 degrees celsius temperatures to the Paterson Grain facility, where a fire in an enclosed bucket elevator had been burning overnight. Firefighters had to climb to the top of the tower, about 180 feet high, to spray water down into the elevator to try to reach and extinguish the flames, as the poly ‘cups’ that carry grain to the top had melted overnight and blocked access through a ground-level entrance. Firefighters also cleared any grain adjacent to the elevator to ensure the fire remained confined to the elevator tower itself. Besides the Daysland Fire Department, the Flagstaff water tender truck from Killam was also called to the scene, along with EMS, Flagstaff County Regional Emergency Services Coordinator Kim Cannady and FRESS Manager Derek Homme. Cannady supplied the above photo, taken from the top of the elevator where the fire suppression work was being done. Firefighters were on scene until around noon, once satisfied that any remaining embers would simply burn themselves out without spreading.

Thatʼs a lot of hose! Daysland Fire Department responded to a fire at the Paterson Grain site just outside the town on Friday, Dec. 17. This picture was taken from the top of the facility, estimated to be 180' high. It shows, from right, the Flagstaff Tender supplying the Daysland Engine with water. Also on scene was and AHS EMS ambulance, Daysland Wildland unit and Cannadyʼs command pickup. The temperature was -30, with a breeze at the top of the tower making it feel much colder.

On Tuesday, Jan. 4, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Killam RCMP were requested to attend a critical injury in Hardisty. Members and other first responders arrived on scene and learned the subject was working under his truck when the truck rolled over him. RCMP report that, the subject, a Hardisty man, was transported to Hardisty Hospital and further to Edmonton via STARS flight. He later passed in hospital. As with any fatality,

RCMP are conducting an investigation into the incident. Alberta Occupational Health and Safety is conducting an adjacent investigation to the RCMP’s investigation. The vehicle has been seized pending a mechanical inspection. Family and friends have started GoFundMe pages to help out with funeral expenses and living expenses for the man’s family, and Comrade’s Parts & Accessories in Hardisty is also collecting cash donations for the family.
